This project aims to chronicle the process of building from the architects point of view. Not mindless, mechanical tasks aimed at some economic goal; but tangible, thoughtful work towards an educational and philosophical desire. The desire to be a Master-Builder has fueled architects for centuries. It is a role that the common definition of Architect has all but forgotten. While in practice very few of us will continue this tradition, it is important that we not lose this fundamental aspect of building. To begin to fulfill oneself with this title, the path is very simple: build a building. That is what follows in this book. It is a chronological outline of the design and build of the New River Valley Train Observation Tower. An additional layer to this project is the inclusion of a variety of innovative building materials/techniques, particularity the use of hardwood cross-laminated timber (CLT). This building will serve as an ongoing research opportunity to evaluate the conditions of building with this material in an extreme condition, complete exposure to weather. No work of architecture is a solo endeavor, yet my heavy involvement in the design, documentation, and building of the tower has culminated in a body of work that is distinctly my own. My role was that of a project manager, and I reported to faculty Kay Edge, Edward Becker, and Robert Riggs. This structure allowed me to have a great deal of independence, while vetting my drawings and ideas with experienced professionals. A small group of students joined me in the larger aspects of the build, which provided another opportunity to discover an aspect so critical to building: collaboration. This build taught so much about project management, design, and realization that could only be understood through such a physical experience.

In the seventeenth century, Philosophers such as Leibniz and Descartes put forward proposal for codes to relate words between languages. The first patents for "translating machines" were applied for in the mid-1930s. Up to the 1980s, most Natural Language Processing (NLP) systems were based on complex sets of hand-written rules. At that time however, the introduction of machine learning algorithms for language processing revolutionized NLP.[5] In 2008, Collobert and Weston exhibited the power of pre-trained word embed- dings in a paper called A unified architecture for natural language processing. Here, word embeddings is highlight for its ability in downstream tasks. They also discuss a neural network architecture that many of todays approaches are built upon. In 2013, Mikolov created word2vec, a toolkit that enabled the training and use of pre-trained embeddings. In 2014, Pennington introduced GloVe, a competitive set of pre-trained embeddings. Starting off, a single word or group of words can be converted into a vector. This vector can be created using the Skip gram method, which predicts the possible words nearby, the LSTM-RNN method, which forms semantic representations of sentences by learning more about the sentence as it iterates through a sentence, using single convolution neural networks, and several other methods. Using these theories, we are trying to build a Similarity Engine which provides machine learning based content search and classification of data.

Sama ongelma kohdataan kyberturvallisuudessa, missä uhkataso kasvaa muutoksista organisaatiorajojen ulkopuolella. Jokaisen toimitusketjuun osallistuvan on suojauduttava. Luottamuksen rakentamisen tehtävä on kaikkien jäsenien yhteinen asia luottamusverkostossa. Toimitusketjuun osallistuvien on rakennettava organisaatioiden välinen luottamus ennen liiketoiminnan aloittamista. Tässä tutkimuksessa tarjotaan keinoja kehittää organisaatioiden välistä luottamusta tietoturvallisuuden hallintajärjestelmän toteuttamisessa. Tietoturvallisuuden hallintajärjestelmä koostuu prosessien, dokumentaation, toimintojen ja resurssien yhdistelmästä, mitkä yhdessä turvaavat tietovarannot organisaation sisällä. Se on koostettava tukemaan liiketoiminnan strategisia tavoitteita ja täyttää valitut kriteeristöt. Koska tietoturvallisuuden hallintajärjestelmiä sertifioidaan eri tavalla, sekä eri tarkoituksia varten, niin sertifioitu standardi ei itsessään takaa turvallisia liiketoimintaprosesseja, vaan se toimii hyvänä lähtöpisteenä luottamuksen rakentamiselle. Tässä tutkimuksessa sovellettiin kirjallisuuskatsausta yritysten välisten luottamusta edistävien ja estävien elementtien löytämiseksi, mitä tietoturvallisuuden hallintajärjestelmän toteutuksessakin voitaisiin soveltaa. Tutkimus toteutettiin rajatulla alueella tietojenkäsittely-, käyttäytymis-, sekä hallintotieteiden yhtymäkohdassa. Tutkimus löysi useita elementtejä (102), mitkä huomioimalla tietoturvallisuuden hallintajärjestelmässä voidaan vaikuttaa yritysten välisen luottamuksen rakentamiseen. Löydökset jaoteltiin ISO/IEC 27001 (2013) tietoturvallisuuden hallintajärjestelmän toteutusaskelien mukaisesti, jotta tulokset tukisivat parhaiten tietoturvallisuuden asiantuntijaa konkreettisella tasolla. Tutkimuspapereita ei ole yhtään, tai niitä on hyvin rajoitetusti missä tietoturvallisuuden hallintajärjestelmän ja yritysten välisen luottamuksen rakentaminen yhdistetään. Monitieteinen tietoturvan ilmiö yhdistettynä yritysten välisen luottamuksen rakentamiseen vaatii enemmän huomiota tiedeyhteisöltä. Повний текст джерелаAs software becomes increasingly embedded in our daily lives, it becomes more and more critical to find the vulnerabilities in this software. Worse, since the amount and variety of this software is rapidly proliferating, manual analysis by rare, talented hackers cannot scale to keep this software safe.
My first foray into what became my dissertation work tried to address a specific class of this general problem: backdoors inserted (either due to malice or for later support and maintenance convenience) into internet-connected embedded devices, such as smart power-meters. To address the requirement of having to reason about logical bugs and to analyze enormous amounts of binary code, I created a novel combination of static and dynamic-symbolic analysis techniques. Combining this with an insight into a new way to define a backdoor, I was able to build a system that analyzed firmware of real-world devices to identify such vulnerabilities in them.
This first foray led into my main contribution: the generalization of this analysis composition in the form of a principled binary analysis framework built to enable the seamless combination of diverse program analysis techniques. This framework, angr, provides a powerful base future research from myself, my lab-mates, and researchers around the world (as the framework is fully open source). One of the early applications of the system was the identification of authentication bypass vulnerabilities in binary firmware using a combination of static analysis and dynamic symbolic execution.
Using angr, we built an autonomous program analysis system that was able to analyze, exploit, and protect binary code without any human intervention. This system, the Mechanical Phish, won third place in the Cyber Grand Challenge, a competition created by DARPA to bootstrap the development of autonomous Cyber Reasoning Systems. While the system did well, its performance in the Cyber Grand Challenge provided an insight that shaped the conclusion of my dissertation: even with the current program analysis techniques combined into a coherent Cyber Reasoning System, serious limitations still exist. In the final work of my graduate studies, I explored the careful reintegration of human assistance into our analysis automation, in a way that addresses its limitations without compromising its scalability advantage over manual analysis.

Повний текст джерелаAustralia, during the twenty five years that followed the end of the Second World War, experienced increased prosperity and a stable industrial relations system in which the Commonwealth Conciliation and Arbitration Commission (the federal commission) played a dominant and authoritative role. The NSW building boom which began in the latter part of the 1950s introduced new technology, concentrated building workers in the central business district of Sydney, and broadened the range of skills required of builders' labourers. The major NSW building tradesmen's union, the Building Workers' Industrial Union (NSW/BWIU), had a communist leadership. The national body of that union lost its federal industrial registration in 1948, and the NSW/BWIU moderated its behaviour after it nearly lost its own, NSW state, registration in 1957. The Australian Building Construction Employees and Builders' Labourers Federation (ABLF) had a federal award under which most of the members of its NSW branch (NSW/BLF) were employed. The leadership of both the ABLF and of the NSW/BLF were communist. The Communist Party of Australia (CPA) suffered a defection by the ABLF leadership in the early 1960s to a communist party which endorsed Marxist- Leninist policies. The BWIU leadership also left the CPA (and formed the Socialist Party of Australia) following an announced shift in policy direction by the CPA in 1969. That shift in policy abandoned the `united front' concept and adopted ultra-left policies which advocated vanguard action by small groups. The announcement by the CPA of its new policies occurred after the gaoling of a Victorian union leader which signalled the virtual collapse of the previously authoritative, and punitive, role of the federal commission. The structure and politics of society underwent enormous change during the 1960s and early 1970s which was an era of protest during which various social movements were formed. The NSW/BLF became a major participant in those protests and movements, and conducted various industrial and social campaigns during the first half of the 1970s. Those campaigns were conducted in line with the ultra-left policies of the CPA, and this isolated the NSW/BLF from its federal body and from the trade union movement generally. This thesis analyses some of the campaigns conducted by the NSW/BLF during the period 1970-1974 and the various responses by the Master Builders Association of NSW (MBA/NSW) to those campaigns. The MBA/NSW broadened its membership base during the 1950s, and the effect that its new membership structure had on its decision-making processes is also considered.

This thesis investigates the feasibility of a smart building evacuation system, capable of guiding occupants along safe paths to exits and responding to changing threats. Inspired by developments in amorphous computing, the design presented is scalable to large networks, robust to hardware and communication failure, and based on simple low-cost components. A simulation and hardware prototype demonstrate that this distributed building evacuation system is both feasible and cost effective.

In this thesis, I describe a system I built that produces instantiated representations from descriptions embedded in natural language. For example, in the sentence 'The girl walked to the table', my system produces a description of movement along a path (the girl moves on a path to the table), instantiating a general purpose trajectory representation that models movement along a path. I demonstrate that descriptions found by my system enable the imagining of an entire inner world, transforming sentences into three-dimensional graphical descriptions of action. By building action descriptions from ordinary language, I illustrate the gains we can make by exploiting the connection between language and thought. I assert that a small set of simple representations should be able to provide powerful coverage of human expression through natural language. In particular, I examine the sorts of representations that are common in the Wall Street Journal from the Penn Treebank, providing a counterpoint for the many other sorts of analyses of the Penn Treebank in other work. Then, I turn to recognized experts in provoking our imaginations with words, using my system to examine the work of four great authors to uncover commonalities and differences in their styles from the perspective of the way they make representational choices in their work.

Повний текст джерелаInterest in indoor localization is growing because it is an important component of many applications (e.g. augmented reality, customer navigation). Image-based localization, using naturally-occurring features in the environment, is an attractive solution to this problem. A challenge is to be able to perform this on a mobile device with limited computing power. Another challenge is that buildings can have interior locations with similar appearances, which can confuse an image-based recognition system. Since many applications do not need the exact location of an image, this research focuses on qualitative localization, which is the problem of determining the approximate location by matching a query image to a database of images. This paper proposes a novel approach that uses an efficient hashing scheme to quickly identify candidate locations, then applies a strong geometric constraint to reject matches that have similar appearance. Through experiments using a large campus building, the approach is shown to be able to localize a query image with high accuracy and have the potential to run in real time on a mobile device.

Повний текст джерелаA relatively new area of study that first received attention during the past decade explores how spatiotemporal data can be efficiently used in applications and stored in databases. Spatial data includes the locations or positions, and possibly also the size and orientation of physical objects. Temporal data is time-stamped, i.e. every piece of temporal data is associated with at least one point or interval in time. Spatiotemporal data is both spatial and temporal. It would denote, for example, where a particular object was at a given time, or when an object had a certain size. There is a need for many spatial applications to have temporal functionality added. Often such an approach is fraught with problems, since the existing designs were specifically tailored for spatial applications, and changing those designs invariably leads to poorer performance or some other compromises. Because it is not easy to change an existing spatial or temporal system to a spatiotemporal system, it makes sense for developers to start building new systems that are optimised for handling spatiotemporal data. Building an application from the ground up is a daunting task, but there are powerful technologies in existence that can expedite the process. One such technology is found in persistent programming languages, which relieves the application builder of the task of storing and retrieving data (e.g. on a database or file). Persistence technology was created with the aim of making complex applications such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems and Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) software easier to create and maintain. When using a persistent language, the same data types and operations are used for both transient and database data - there is no need for code to translate between store and memory formats or to transfer objects between memory and disk. In contrast, programmers using conventional databases need to be able to program in two languages: the database language (like SQL) and a programming language (like C++ or Java). To date there has been little work done to actually apply persistence technology to the GIS domain [MIA96, SVZ98]. One problem with a persistent programming approach in this context is that one has to spend a great deal of time to work out how spatiotemporal data is going to be dealt with in the application, as noted in trying to build a PJama (Persistent Java) system for the local Sea Fisheries Research Institute in our department [SVZ98]. How will spatiotemporal data be represented, what methods are necessary for manipulating the data, and where would spatiotemporal data and methods be positioned in the overall structure of the program? This thesis aims at developing a framework that can be used to make persistent spatiotemporal systems a viable alternative to conventional GIS applications. The approach adopted involves finding a suitable data model, implementing this as a PJama (Persistent Java) class library, extending this with structures to improve performance, and evaluating the result.

An application on a social network may provide a means to avoid the cost, decrease time and increase scale of operation of heritage preservation by motivating users to supply and process the data. This project uses a Facebook application for the purpose of gathering heritage pictures and useful metadata and tagging. The application was written in Python using the Django Web Framework, connected to Facebook using the Graph API and was hosted on an Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud instance. Motivation techniques to promote user participation were investigated.

Повний текст джерелаIn the era of big data, many cluster platforms and resource management schemes are created to satisfy the increasing demands on processing a large volume of data. A general setting of big data processing jobs consists of multiple stages, and each stage represents generally defined data operation such as ltering and sorting. To parallelize the job execution in a cluster, each stage includes a number of identical tasks that can be concurrently launched at multiple servers. Practical clusters often involve hundreds or thousands of servers processing a large batch of jobs. Resource management, that manages cluster resource allocation and job execution, is extremely critical for the system performance.
Generally speaking, there are three main challenges in resource management of the new big data processing systems. First, while there are various pending tasks from dierent jobs and stages, it is difficult to determine which ones deserve the priority to obtain the resources for execution, considering the tasks' different characteristics such as resource demand and execution time. Second, there exists dependency among the tasks that can be concurrently running. For any two consecutive stages of a job, the output data of the former stage is the input data of the later one. The resource management has to comply with such dependency. The third challenge is the inconsistent performance of the cluster nodes. In practice, run-time performance of every server is varying. The resource management needs to dynamically adjust the resource allocation according to the performance change of each server.
The resource management in the existing platforms and prior work often rely on fixed user-specic congurations, and assumes consistent performance in each node. The performance, however, is not satisfactory under various workloads. This dissertation aims to explore new approaches to improving the eciency of large-scale big data processing platforms. In particular, the run-time dynamic factors are carefully considered when the system allocates the resources. New algorithms are developed to collect run-time data and predict the characteristics of jobs and the cluster. We further develop resource management schemes that dynamically tune the resource allocation for each stage of every running job in the cluster. New findings and techniques in this dissertation will certainly provide valuable and inspiring insights to other similar problems in the research community.
