Анотація:

The concept of maritime (maritime) is frequently discussed among the Indonesian people, a fact that may be attributed to the emphasis that has been given to maritime issues by President Joko Widodo since his candidacy. This article applies Faircloughian approach to critical discourse analysis (CDA) to understand the coverage of ‘maritime’ in Indonesian online media. This paradigm has been selected because the media does not simply act as a neutral medium through its publication and coverage; rather, media have specific ideologies, which can be described and analyzed through critical discourse analysis. This approach focuses on three aspects when analyzing written discourses: representations, relations, and identities. Representation refers to specific words and grammatical structures to construct reality; relations refer to the connections between the subjects as depicted in the discourse; and identity refers to reporters’ positions in their coverage of online media, including their biases. In general, relations and identities in Indonesian online media coverage have been oriented towards the government and society. The government has been constructed ambiguously by online media, but depictions of government have tended to be positive, with a focus on the success of its maritime programs.

AbstractThe Muslim communities that flourished in the ports of southeastern China c. 10th-14th centuries AD were part of a trade diaspora that played a central role in the commercial life of maritime Asia. In contrast to past treatments which portray these communities as essentially static entities, this paper proposes a tripartite periodization. In the first (c. 907-1020), trade and merchants were concentrated in Guangzhou, with frequent tribute missions playing a major role. In the second (1020-1279), maritime trade involved multiple ports and free trade under the supervision of the maritime trade superintendencies, and the Muslim communities became increasingly integrated into the society of southeastern China. In the third period (1279-1368), preferential Mongol policies towards Muslims significantly altered the nature of the communities and their diasporic identity. Les communautés musulmanes qui se sont épanouies dans les ports de la Chine du sud-est des 10th-14th siècles faisaient partie d'une diaspora commerciale qui a joué un rôle central dans la vie commerciale de l'Asie maritime. Contrairement aux traitements passés qui dépeignent ces communautés en tant qu'essentiellement entités statiques, cet article propose un periodization triple. The Cyclades islands in the South Aegean initially attracted the attention of prehistorians approaching islands as ‘laboratories’ for the study of cultural development, examining the notions of ‘isolation’ and ‘connectivity’, or, more recently, by introducing new terminologies, such as ‘seascape’ and ‘islandscape’. The wealth of material remains of the post-medieval era in the Cyclades islands (e.g., ecclesiastical architecture, ceramics) and the textual record available (e.g., Ottoman tax registers, travellers’ accounts) provide fascinating evidence regarding the construction of sacred landscapes, self-expression, community, and maritime identities throughout the period of Ottoman domination. The main aim of this article is to examine the historical contingencies and the distribution of a vast number of rural churches, primarily as evidence for religious expression, in order to capture island dynamics and the formation of religious and community identities, as imprinted onto the sacred landscapes of the island of Paros. By shifting our focus from the imperial Ottoman to the local Cycladic, we come to appreciate islanders as decisive agents of their maritime identities, creating rituals and sacred spaces, sometimes beyond the strict borders of institutional religion.

Анотація:

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) plays a significant role in global marine environmental governance, providing a forum of regulatory oversight for member states. Member states are the main actors of the IMO and exert considerable influence on the process of lawmaking. Among these member states, China is unique due to its multiple identities. There are various factors influencing interests behind China’s multiple identities, which fully engage the country in various shipping and maritime trade activities. This article examines China’s role in the IMO marine environmental regulatory governance. It identifies the impact of China on global ocean governance and indicates the development and reforms in the global governance system. China enacted the China Ocean Agenda 21 for its strategy of ocean development. Thus, China is the object of study in this examination of empirical research that collects submissions from 2001 to 2020 related to marine environmental governance. The findings reveal that the extent to which China participates in such governance has considerably increased, and although the contribution of China’s submissions is still in development, its role in the IMO is no longer merely that of a follower, and the efforts of the country have had a positive influence on the IMO’s marine environmental regulatory governance, including its legal instruments.

Maritime history has grown exponentially in recent years. Seen as a remedy to the ideological straightjackets of nation-state and area studies paradigms associated with modernization theory, a methodological orientation towards the sea offers the historian the advantages of an interactive transnational approach, and places matters of the environment and material culture before stories of kings and battles. Crucially, it focuses on flows, routes, mobility, and exchange rather than fixed identities and linear trajectories.

This research essay explores both the substance and style of exhibits at maritime museums in Britain and the United States. The museums selected reflect how social history concerns affect representations of national identities and national values on both sides of the Atlantic. Issues of social inclusion and diversity prevail, but are treated in substantially different ways in Britain and the U.S. Representations of life at sea, relocation and travel, and commerce provide focal points for exploring these differences. Issues of class, race, loss and guilt, social mobility, and national identity are woven into the analysis.

Cette thèse se présente comme un essai de socio-histoire de la profession plurielle de marin dans le royaume de Majorque sur la longue durée, de la conquête de l’île par Jacques Ier d’Aragon en 1229 au soutien majorquin à la conquête du royaume de Naples par Alphonse V le Magnanime dans les années 1440. La substitution de la notion de « professionnel de mer » à celle floue de « gens de mer », employée dans l’historiographie, permet d’observer plus précisément ces hommes, en discernant pour chacun, de manière synchronique et diachronique grâce à la reconstitution de trajectoires individuelles, compétences et activités navales, fonctions à bord, et statut social à terre, dans un contexte médiéval où les statuts juridiques, des aristocrates aux esclaves, occupaient une place centrale dans l’identification des individus et la hiérarchisation de la société majorquine. This thesis is a socio-historical essay about the plural profession of mariner in the kingdom of Majorca over the long term, from the conquest of the island by James I of Aragon in 1229 to Majorcan support for the conquest of the kingdom of Naples by Alfonso V the Magnanimous in the 1440s. The substitution of the notion of "professional of the sea" for that of "seaman", used in historiography, allows for a more precise observation of these men, discerning for each of them, synchronously and diachronically thanks to the reconstitution of individual trajectories, naval skills and activities, functions on board, and social status on land, in a medieval context where legal status, from aristocrats to slaves, occupied a central place in the identification of individuals and in the hierarchisation of Majorcan society. In three main successive parts, the articulated and interdependent study of the practical, institutional and social dimensions of this professionalisation thus offers multiple lived realities, individually and collectively, both at sea and on land, which go beyond the simple normative framework presented in the different sea customs, professional collectives and maritime jurisdictions in force in the Kingdom of Majorca

L'entre-deux-guerres constitue un apogée économique pour la ville de Rouen et son agglomération. La montée en puissance de l'activité portuaire durant la Première Guerre mondiale puis l'émergence de l'industrie pétrochimique entraînent la réorganisation des géographies urbaines et approfondissent le tracé antérieur des lignes de division de l'espace. Face au déclin du secteur textile qui dominait jusqu'alors l'économie régionale, les communes ouvrières de la rive gauche de la Seine, régénérées par une industrialisation accélérée, forment un contrepoids au centre-ville commerçant, monumental et institutionnel, situé sur l'autre rive. L'antagonisme socioculturel est également politique. Les Républicains modérés et les Radicaux administrent par alternance Rouen, où le parti catholique demeure très puissant, ainsi que l'illustrent l'instauration du culte johannique et le développement du Mouvement Croix de feu. Sur la rive gauche, le Parti communiste et le parti socialiste se disputent l'ascendant sur les milieux ouvriers tandis que le catholicisme social et le paternalisme des élites conservent une forte influence dans les centres industriels plus anciens de la rive droite. Scindée en deux par un cours d'eau majeur et encerclée par une "banlieue rouge" elle-même cernée par le monde agricole en crise d'identité et de représentation, la ville de Rouen apparaît comme l'espace privilégié de la confrontation politique
The interwar period constitutes an economic peak for the city of Rouen and its suburban aeras. The growing momentum of the port activity during the World War I plus the rise of the petrochemical industry lead to the reorganization of the urban structures and strenghenes the previous division lines between built-up aeras. Taking into consideration the decline of the textile industry which dominated the local economy before, the worker town from the left bank of the Seine, being regenerated by quick-industrialization, from a counterwweight to the trader, monumental, and institutionnal city centre, located on the right bank. The sociocultural antagonism is also political. The Republican Party and the radical Party run Rouen in turns but the city remains under the influence of the powerful Catholic movement, which can especially be seen by the establishment of the Jeanne d'Arc cult, and the developpement of the Croix de feu League. On the left bank, the Communist Party and the Socialist Party fight over influence on the workers milieu, while social Catholicism and owner paternalism retain significant authority in older industrial centres from the right bank. Divided in two parts by a main watercourse and surrounded by a "red belt" which is further encircled by the peasant countryside currently experiencing an identity and representation crisis, the city of Rouen seems like a predestined space for political clashes

Nous décrivons et analysons les comportements et attitudes langagiers de jeunes issus de l'immigration maghrébine dans un quartier de Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, ville située en banlieue rouennaise. Nous montrons comment les locuteurs se servent des langues en présence, notamment le français et l'arabe, pour réaliser une spécificité et s'affirmer en tant que groupe social à part entière. Cette forme langagière à fonction identitaire est appelée "discours métisse", le métissage consistant, chez nos locuteurs, en la combinaison de divers phénomènes langagiers: l'alternance de langues, la création de formes hybrides, le verlan ou encore des procédés formels de formation lexicale (par troncation notamment). L'étude a ainsi pour finalité l'analyse des processus d'identification et de différenciation, repérables dans les comportements langagiers et les discours des jeunes sur leur expérience vécue du contact de langues. Les données recueillies sont de deux ordres: - des observations de situations d'interactions langagières enregistrées par un intermédiaire, membre du groupe de pairs: il s'agit là de repérer les traits spécifiques du parler de ces jeunes; - le discours épilinguistique des locuteurs, destine à cerner la façon dont ces derniers catégorisent et se représentent leurs propres langues et pratiques langagières. Le discours metisse apparait, de plus, comme une pratique de quartier, un langage à travers lequel les jeunes se reconnaissent, auquel ils s'identifient et par lequel, aussi ils excluent l'autre. Ce double mouvement d'inclusion/exclusion qui accompagne le discours métisse témoigne de l'existence d'une culture propre au groupe, propre à la banlieue
We describe and analyze linguistic behaviours and attitudes of second-generation immigrants from the Maghreb, living in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, a suburb of Rouen. We show how the speakers use their languages, in particular the French and Arabic languages, in order to realize a specificity and to assert themselves as a social group. This linguistic form (usage) is an instance of language mixing, which consists in the combination of different linguistic devices (phenomena), such as code-switching, creation of hybrid forms, verlan (syllable-switching), truncation. The study tends to analyze identification and differentiation processes, being at work in speaker's linguistic behaviours. The linguistic data are of two types: - observation of linguistic interactions, which have been tape-recorded by an intermediary who belongs to the peer group: the purpose is to analyze the specific features of the speech. - linguistic representations: the aim is to analyze what representations the speakers have of their own linguistic practices. Moreover, this linguistic form seems to be a "local language", in which these young people establish and affirm their identity. It is also a highly effective code by means of which non-members can be kept at arm's length. In definitive, this linguistic form attests of the existence of a peer group and suburban culture

Cette monographie est une étude des mutations que vit Plougastel, commune rurale et maritime de la Communauté urbaine de Brest, depuis la dernière guerre jusqu'à nos jours. Un des axes d'étude porte sur les différenciations et les identités que mettent en place ou s'octroient les différents groupes qui y habitent, nouveaux résidents et autochtones. Un second axe vise à percevoir les solidarités qui se sont maintenues au sein des groupes autochtones, solidarités familiales, de voisinage, de comunauté. Ainsi l'organisation communautaire du breuriez, organisation propre à Plougastel est évoquée. C'est par la description de faits, d'objets et le recueil de données que permet l'observation participante que les conservations et les changements de traits culturels et des relations sociales sont perceptibles. Ainsi on voit dans un premier temps l'étude du paysage, de l'occupation des sols, de la maison et de ses alentours, depuis la ferme de type traditionnel jusu'aux constructions récentes. Les activités de travail, de loisir, les stratifications sociales sont ensuite abordées. Enfin, les pratiques quotidiennes alimentaires et vestimentaires, puis les pratiques religieuses et les rites funéraires viennent clore cette étude
The @thesis is a study of the changes observable in Plougastel, a rural and maritime township in the Brest urban district, from the Second World War until the present day. One of the main themes dealt with is the identitary differences that the inhabitants -be they " natives " or " newcommers " - tend to claim or create. The second theme examines the cohesive relations maintained within the native groupes on the family, neighbourhood, and community levels. In this respect the particular Plougastel community tradition known as the breuriez will be closely studied. Observation through participation in local life permits a detailed description of the collected phenomena, thus bringing into focus the continuity or evolution of cultural practices and social relations. Thus we begin by studying the lay of the land and its use, the house and its surroundings from the traditionnal farm style down to recent sturctures. Secondly we examine work, leisure, and social stratification. Finally, a description of everyday nutritive practices, clothing, religious and funerary rites will bring the study to a close

L’étude concerne des représentations identitaires et des pratiques langagières de jeunes femmes issues de l’immigration maghrébine. Elle explique comment le processus migratoire s’enclenche et suscite une transformation dans l’histoire familiale, et comment les jeunes en héritent et tentent de concilier les identités culturelle et sociale. Dans la famille migrante, l’identité et la langue deviennent saillantes. Nos enquêtées expriment une aspiration à une identité sociale positive, mais s’accrochent à leur identité culturelle face à menace du stigmate et au sentiment de discrimination. Afin de neutraliser la tension que suscitent les contacts de langues et des interactions entre groupes, elles tentent d’harmoniser entre les identités et revendiquent une pratique distincte des deux langues, d’appartenance et de référence. Dans ce contexte, la langue d’origine se sent menacée et tente de se protéger. L’étude essaie de montrer la perception de nos enquêtées de ces réalités
This study concerns identity perceptions and speaking languages by young women from North African’s immigration. The study explains how migratory process gets under away and creates a transformation on the family history, and how young received it and they try to reconcile between cultural and social identities. In migrant family identity and language are salients. The population of this investigation says her aspiration for a positive social identity, but clings to her cultural identity, facing up to stigma’s and discrimination’s threat. For neutralize tension who’s created by language contacts and group’s interactions, there young women tried to harmonize between identities and claimed distinct speaking of membership’s and reference languages. In this context origin’s language feels threatened and try to protect herself. The study try to show population’s perception of there realities

CESI école d’ingénieurs a mis en place l’Apprentissage Actif Par Projets dans sa formation d’ingénieurs en alternance en 2015. Le cursus à l’école a été conçu pour être professionnalisant, via la réalisation de projets pluridisciplinaires en groupes. Le travail de recherche questionne les médiations et obstacles vécus par les apprenants dans la construction de leurs identités professionnelles dans ce dispositif. Nous avançons deux hypothèses principales pour étudier la question : l’A2P2 devrait influer sur le développement identitaire des apprenants, mais les leviers repérés ne sauraient être uniformes, les interactions dispositif-dispositions jouant sur leur vécu. La méthodologie a consisté à recueillir des données à visée compréhensive sur les 3 ans du cycle ingénieur. Une méthode de recueil mixte a été employée : une approche qualitative, par échantillonnage (31 apprenants), couplée à un recueil de données quantitatives sur la cohorte (587 apprenants), pour en extraire des « profils » de construction. Cette approche, centrée sur le discours des apprenants, a été complémentée par une triangulation méthodologique (recueil de données auprès de tuteurs, résultats d’évaluations).Les résultats confirment la présence d’indicateurs de construction imputables au dispositif à l’école, via la répétition de schémas d’action efficaces. Ils font aussi émerger des profils de construction identitaire, à savoir différentes dynamiques étayées par des ressources et leviers spécifiques, en fonction des buts fixés par les apprenants à la formation. Les résultats ont permis de noter les appuis différenciés en entreprise et en centre, pour accompagner les professionnalités émergentes
CESI school of engineering has implemented a PBL curriculum called A2P2 in its combined work and study engineering degree program since 2015. This curriculum revolves around cross-disciplinary projects carried out in small groups and was designed to professionalize students. This research work endeavours to question the challenges and assets of this learning environment as regards the professional identity construction of the future engineers. We first assumed that the program should positively affect their professional identity construction, but also advanced the hypothesis that its impact should differ from one student to another as students’ individual dispositions interact with the learning environment and thus affect their experiences. The research process involved gathering comprehensive data throughout the 3-year engineering program. A dual data collection approach was developed – a sampling, qualitative study (31 students) as well as quantitative data collection from the cohort (587 students), to infer development “profiles”. This student-centred methodology was supported by data triangulation, via external data collected from the tutors, from evaluation results.The data collected supports the theory of the school curriculum contributing to students’ identity development, through the iteration of efficient patterns of actions. They bring out several development profiles –professional identity dynamics, bolstered through specific resources and levers of development, depending on students’ set out goals for the training. The results point out that school and companies provide different levers to support students’ professional becoming

This chapter expands the traditional classification of medieval French romance by proposing ‘Mediterranean’ as a thematic category alongside ‘Antique’ and ‘Breton’. In addition to their geographical setting, ‘Mediterranean’ romances feature themes such as sea voyages, merchants, pirates, mutable identities, and the changes of fortune occasioned by the hazards of maritime travel. Floire et Blancheflor, first attested in French c.1150 and subsequently translated into many languages, provides the focal point for a discussion of medieval romance that draws inspiration from Peregrine Horden and Nicholas Purcell’s 2000 study, The Corrupting Sea. The second part of the chapter tests the longue durée of the Mediterranean thematic by examining the Hellenistic romance Callirhoe. The close parallels between the two texts, corresponding to Mikhail Bakhtin’s description of the Greek novel of adventure, also allows an assessment of their divergences as reflections of the shift from a late antique to a high medieval context.

A Material Culture focuses on objects in Swahili society through the elaboration of an approach that sees both people and things as caught up in webs of mutual interaction. It therefore provides both a new theoretical intervention in some of the key themes in material culture studies, including the agency of objects and the ways they were linked to social identities, through the development of the notion of a biography of practice. These theoretical discussions are explored through the archaeology of the Swahili, on the Indian Ocean coast of eastern Africa. This coast was home to a series of "stonetowns" (containing coral architecture) from the ninth century AD onwards, of which Kilwa Kisiwani is the most famous, considered here in regional context. These stonetowns were deeply involved in maritime trade, carried out among a diverse, Islamic population. This book suggests that the Swahili are a highly-significant case study for exploration of the relationship between objects and people in the past, as the society was constituted and defined through a particular material setting. Further, it is suggested that this relationship was subtly different than in other areas, and particularly from western models that dominate prevailing analysis. The case is made for an alternative form of materiality, perhaps common to the wider Indian Ocean world, with an emphasis on redistribution and circulation rather than on the accumulation of wealth. The reader will therefore gain familiarity with a little-known and fascinating culture, as well as appreciating the ways that non-western examples can add to our theoretical models.

The purpose of writing this book was to explore aspects of human behaviour that have been, to varying extents, disregarded, overlooked, or ignored in terrestrial-dominated archaeology to date. Recognizing that the sea ‘is good to think’, it was envisaged that an exploration of North Sea archaeologies could launch something of a ‘maritime turn’. This final chapter considers the broad themes of the human past that have been enlightened through this study, and questions if and how these can be reproduced in land-based research. Five interrelated themes are presented here: the essence of nature–society interrelationships, the attribution of forms of agency to inanimate objects, deviant spaces, the essence of travelling long distances—including the skills and knowledge required for this—and finally, how the sea contributes to shaping social identities. The relationship that people had with their environment, or nature–society interrelationships, is fundamental to archaeological research on land and at sea. Explicitly or implicitly, terrestrial archaeology presents us with something of an irreversible progression towards ‘encultured’ landscapes—narratives wherein the land becomes increasingly less natural and more cultural (see chapter 2). In much of Europe, the ‘enculturation’ of the world started back in the Post-glacial. It continued throughout the Mesolithic, with the creation of paths through, and clearances within, otherwise natural landscapes. In the Neolithic, ‘enculturation’ took place through deforestation, and through the apportioning of symbolic significance to natural features and the construction of monuments relating to these. By the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age, large tracts of land were being accommodated to the needs of humans through the creation of field systems and settlements, producing ‘cultural landscapes’. From the middle Bronze Age onwards, according to accepted land-based archaeological thinking, it would appear that nature played at best a minor role, limited to the impact of climate and weather on the crops being cultivated. The study of the North Sea has fundamentally challenged the nature–culture dichotomy. The concept of ‘enculturation’ places Homo sapiens centre stage in a changing world, but underestimates the role played by the sea and rivers, as well as animals, trees, and plants, as important co-constructors of landscape.

This chapter examines how geographical setting shapes the conduct of war. It first provides an overview of the ways that physical geography influences the tactical identities of armed forces as well as their strategic effects, focusing on practices that lie at the heart of ‘joint’ warfare — in which land, sea, and air forces cooperate to their collective advantage. The discussion highlights the strategic possibilities presented by warfare in different physical environments — that is, land warfare, naval warfare, and air warfare. The chapter also considers the strengths and weaknesses of forces that fight on land and sea and in the air, unconventional warfare fought on land, the maritime strategy employed by navies, theory vs. practice of air power, and coercive bombing. Finally, it analyses the strategic potential of space war, the expansion of war into cyberspace, and the use of ‘cyber’ weapons in information warfare.
