This research is a study of the development of the relations between the Spanish country side and towns in the age of the enlightenment. It doesn't limit itself to the economic and social aspects, but extends to the institutions, the political discourse as well as the literature. The first part that deals with the economic and social interrelations between the town and the country into space and demography, the division of labour, the movements of population, agriculture and its place in the economy and finally the production and trade of wheat. This first part is based upon classical works and recent regional monograph. The second part is devoted to the place of agriculture in the economic discourse and in the "economic societies of the friends of the countryside". An investigation into the heraldry and the mottoes of these "economic societies" reveals the part played by farming in the economic development scheme proposed by these societies. An in depth study of the economic publication of the time confirms the emergence of these themes between 1770 and 1970. Finally, we have noted the originality and the specifity of Spanish agrarian thought, far removed - although contemporary - from the French one. The last part covers the relations between literature and the society, and more particulary the way society conveys the issues of town and country through three fundamental genres: poetry, drama and fiction - in which one notes the re-emergence and the revitalization of pastoral themes, the "alabanza de aldea" and the myth of the golden age

This work proposes a study of fictional whorehouses in Latin American literature based on four novels of the Boom : Juntacadáveres (1964) by the Uruguayan novelist Juan Carlos Onetti, and El lugar sin límites (1965) by the Chilean novelist José Donoso as well as La Casa Verde (1966) and Pantaleón y las visitadoras (1973) by the Peruvian novelist Mario Vargas Llosa. Through textual analysis, we strive to highlight the diverse narrative modalities utilized to represent these spaces and notably the stakes behind their appearances in the texts, and the alternative order they propose as well as the pretenses inherent to them. Spaces promised by the established order while at the same time rejected by society, whorehouses succeed in bringing together opposites: bodily lowliness and the heights of imagination, the outside and the inside, passage and imprisonment, rational order and instinctual anarchy… The exceptional character of fictional whorehouses is due not only to their carnivalesque character, but also to the unexpected activities that they house. Real « mises en abyme » of encompassing spaces that welcome them, they reveal themselves in the course of analysis as places of all metamorphosis, whether they are on the individual, sexual, social, professional or political. The conclusion presents a reflection on the whorehouses novels as a novelistic form unto itself in Latin American literature

Today, Scenes from the Life of a Faun and The Shadow of the Coachman’s Body are considered as major works of the 20th century German literature ; originally however, at the beginning of the 1950s, they were rather isolated in the German-language literary landscape – to such an extent that Peter Weiss’ text was not even published until 1960. The present work analyses the two auto-diegetic narratives by choosing the following axes of comparison : the tension between the narrator’s voice and the voice of the authorial, non anthropomorphic instance ; the networks of metaphors with poetological implications and, above all, the interaction between the abounding descriptive micro-sequences and the narrative macro-sequences, somewhat hidden behind the descriptions but nonetheless and undeniably present. By following these tracks, the analysis shows the aesthetic-political implications of the two texts ; echoing with either romantic and myth-like (as far as Scenes from the Life of a Faun is concerned) or surrealist and Freudian (The Shadow of the Coachman’s Body) intertexts, each of the texts raises a specific ‘explosive’ question, neglected or avoided by the dominant literary production. Thus, Arno Schmidt’s convulsive idyll asks : What is the price to pay for a fictional narrative about the Nazi-years if it is not willing to give up the pleasures of the metaphor ? And Peter Weiss’ matter-of-fact psycho-drama : What is it that post-war German literature keeps out by focusing entirely on the outlines of the exterior world and by relying on a supposedly non-metaphorical language with stable meanings ?

Firenze is a precursor in the housing, vital space and comfort, for economical and social reasons. The deep modifications occurred between the xivth and the mid-xvith century led to the development of a new home conception and to a change of the home related moral values. These housing transformations progressively influenced the talk on domestic area as well as it use done by the novel authors. This mutation in the firenze civilisation and literature is reported here. Indeed, from boccacce's decameron to grazzini's cene the major transformation of the firenze living area acted progressively meantime on the house space treatment. This approach starting from a relatively marginal and single point of the current tuscan literature involves a world vision and an evaluation of the human being place in his environment. It implies the notions of the family, of the private life, but also the human connections to the other and to the external world. Then this study evolution is part of the literature research but also of the civilisation. It associates tightly the examined texts to the historical situation and to the economical, political and social conditions where they are from

In light of Marcel Gauchet’s works on disenchantment, we intent in this dissertation to analyze Honoré de Balzac’s views about religion and Christianity, especially in three of his most apologetics novels: Le Médecin de Campagne (The Country Doctor, 1833), Le Curé de Village (The Village Priest, 1841) et L’Envers de l’Histoire Contemporaine (The Seamy Side of History, 1848). Published at different points of Balzac’s career, those novels have in common to illustrate the move toward autonomy of human condition by making religion dependent on human will. Withdrawing Providence, reinterpreting original sin dogma, those thesis novels depict a disenchanted world. From now on, evil can be explained by pathology and religion can be reduced to the treatment of social wounds. Investing all their energy in life here below, Balzac’s characters appear to be freed from any metaphysical ties. In this human comedy that is no longer divine, religion is a mean, never an end.

The landscape represents a meeting point between a cultural model and people’s perception of the world. There are two types of landscape: one, conceived as object of observation which refers to a pictorial and artistic landscape, and other, seen as a lived space, part of the field of geographical landscape. Literature, as well as cinema, is mindful of the importance of the landscape. The regard cinema addresses to the landscape refers to several cultural, artistic, literary and social patterns, all of which are in constant evolution. Our study will focus on the perception and vision of the landscape displayed in Italian literary and cinematographic works between 1929 and 1964. Based on landscape theoreticians and critics of film and literature, we attempted to outline the various functions (cultural identity, symbolic, aesthetic) assumed by the landscape itself

In reading the stories of Bernanos, Gide, Achebe incorporated in our corpus, it emerges that religious imagery offers a composite picture. Based upon a set of representations, religion indeed varies according to the times and society. Though viewing the divine as an influential entity, religion implies beliefs and local theogonies. In fact, divinity doesn’t influence religious belonging for no much more than there is not religion without society, there isn’t society without religion: an atheist society undoubtedly would be a godless society but it wouldn’t mean a society devoid of religion or belief. It is worth noting that in these texts the mere mention of religion poses an existential problem beyond any fervor it is likely to stand for. More than a relationship between the divine and the human, it’s about the advent of man’s evolving conscience in a universe where bonds which have always created the collective unity tend to untie. In other words, religion is meant to be a set of values by which human behaviors are inspired. It is in fighting against such a prescription that some discomfort came to be among most characters in some novels. As a result, the observation both stunning and unsatisfactory provided by the image of a universe caught up in the turmoil of societal demands stems from the approach of religion. In view of fictions, it turns out that the nature of the sacred stirs and moves throughout all peoples but also fades away more than it shows off, leads astray more than it takes root. Though leaned to the landmark of faith, the human being is more and more subjugated by vertigo. This uneasiness becomes universal because religion is a collectively-lived phenomenon. In other words, the texts unveil human being’s drift in his struggling against evil. But more than a fight against the others, it’s rather a bitter struggle against oneself in order to be reborn to the first splendor. It is obvious that the universe of stories is peopled by individuals whose voices bear the echo of the divine. A perpetual cohabitation between good and evil, this is how the human condition is established and so depicted in the novels. For what may reveal the diary of a priest bearing the arrow of god and striving against demons except that it is the symphony of an ambiguous adventure, if not a perilous one

If we contemplate the playwright's rich production, we realise to what extent Egypt plays a prominent part in his work and life. It is the crowning achievement of his literary work which highlights all the aspects of this country, social, historical, cultural and political However, in this study, we will try to limit our subject of The image of Egypt in T.al-Hakim's work to two particular eras, the revolutions of 1919 and 1952. His writings clearly relate those major events. The way he thinks, writes, criticizes and analyses before and after the 1919 revolution is no longer the same after the 1952 revolution. He started being a dreamy idealistic writer, and turned into another one, more realistic and committed in his literary work. Our global problematics will hinge on the following issues: what representation of Egypt does Tawfiq al-Hakim's work give? Can we regard his return to ancient myths as a continuity between modern Egypt and ancient Egypt? In a first part, we deal with the two revolutions which have had repercussions on his writings and political vision. The second part will tackle the society of his novel, in which he describes a country seen through a native Egyptian, and the strong ties which link the Egyptian people to their nation. The third part will focus on women and on the fallah, which greatly inspired the writer. The fourth part will be dedicated to the Pharaonic Egypt. We will see how far he has been influenced by ancient Egypt to descibe the modern one. We have relied on a few works of different writers so as to find an authentic link between what he writes and thinks reality and imagination in his works. We will analyse the way he sees, observes and criticizes his own country

Theatre practice in the Horn of Africa countries, which dates as far back as the Second World War, knows two phases. Before the independence of Djibouti and Somalia, theater focused mainly on political struggle, and, since the end of colonisation, it has been devoted to societal questions. After independence, massive urbanization brought pastoral populations into the city thus in contact with other populations of different cultures such as the Afars, the Arabs, the Indians and the Jews. The settlement in towns is mainly synonymous with the encounter with the West symbolised by school and nightclubs. The new city dwellers fall into two groups, Traditionalists and Moderns who reject tradition. The aim of the authors who advocate for the safeguard of tradition consists in confronting the values of the two groups and show how abandoning traditional merits condemns the society to identity loss. Subsequent to the analysis of these contrasting values and evaluating the underlying motivations, the aim of our study is to question the authors' objective. Could they be considered “reactionary” or have they opened a new door to a debate that is called to continue?

Spanish society, essentially agricultural until the 1950s, underwent an accelerated industrialization, promoted by Franco's government, which led to a rapid and irreversible decline of rural areas. These territories became depopulated spaces that the state allowed to decline in favor of the central core (Madrid), some peripheral regions (such as the Basque Country and Catalonia) and new coastal tourist centers. Through the analysis of the discourse on nature and the agrarian world from 1950 to the present time, this research work focuses on the role of the rural exodus in the socio-economic evolution of Spain and attempts to shed light on the way ecology has spread in this country as deruralization has progressed. The consequences of the disappearance of the peasant societies that once occupied the spaces that today are known as España vacía (empty Spain) have been relatively little studied. However, several writers of the second half of the twentieth century have studied the history of this "silent revolution": Miguel Delibes, Julio Llamazares Rafael Chirbes, among others, lament in their novels the fate of these regions and their inhabitants and highlight the contradictory relationship that Spaniards have with their rural past. Also, the former agricultural territories, neglected and marginalized by the public authorities, seem to be regaining the importance they once had in the eyes of the Spaniards. For rural Spain becomes a political issue from the moment we look at it, both in the past, questioning how to overcome the wounds caused by the civil war and the dictatorship, of which it still bears the scars, and in the future, through the question of how to respond to the environmental crisis, preserving nature and farmland
