Having developed foreign language proficiency, a large number of EFL learners experience some degrees of foreign language loss later in life since English has no social function in many EFL contexts including Iran. However, there are some language learners who actively maintain and develop their proficiency long after they leave language education programs. This study aims at uncovering techniques applied by this minority group in maintaining their foreign language proficiency. Participants who were willing to share their experience of proficiency maintenance were selected through purposive and snowball sampling and verbalizations of their experience were then analyzed in line with phenomenology research design. Abstraction and thematic analysis of the participants’ experiences revealed that they actively create conditions that are conducive to proficiency maintenance such as reviewing previously learned materials, watching target language movies and actively manipulating subtitles, reading for pleasure, attending discussion groups, and using internet to communicate in the target language. While proficiency loss and attrition is the norm in EFL contexts, maintenance is an exception; hence, the findings of this study have clear and immediate implications for both foreign language teachers and learners since they provide them with down-to-earth, data-driven techniques of proficiency maintenance.

Abstract This study explored the attrition / maintenance of second language (L2) proficiency by examining longitudinally the oral skills of a group of L2 French and L2 Spanish participants (n = 33) four years after study abroad, and three years after completing an undergraduate degree in languages. Multiple regressions were conducted to determine the extent to which language contact / use and attained proficiency at the end of study abroad could predict changes in fluency and oral proficiency. Results demonstrated that those variables that improved significantly during study abroad (e.g., speech rate) were maintained four years later. The amount of target language contact / use played a role in maintenance of aspects of fluency such as speech rate and frequency of silent pauses, whereas proficiency attained at the end of study abroad played a role in the use of corrections. Both language contact / use and proficiency attained are important variables in the long-term maintenance of overall proficiency.

The proficiency of 70 Army automotive mechanics in performing two repair tasks was examined under controlled test conditions. The tasks were installation of a generator and a starter on a tank engine. The subjects were assigned to one of 10 job-experience (JE) categories based on the number of times they had performed the repair tasks. The 10 experience categories ranged from no previous experience to nine or more times. Six dimensions of maintenance proficiency were measured: quality checks, adherence to procedures, repair time, information use, tool selection, and tool use. Overall, proficiency improved markedly for mechanics in the 0 to 5 JE range, peaked between 5 and 6 JE, and declined somewhat for mechanics with more than 6 JE. The job-experience/proficiency function was similar for both repair tasks and all six dimensions of proficiency. The results indicate that job experience could be a valid predictor of maintenance proficiency and training needs if based on an analysis of a larger sample of representative maintenance tasks and validated with a larger subject population.

<span lang="EN-US">This case study investigated the phenomenon of English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers’ perceptions of professional development (PD) related to language proficiency, which has become a critical issue in the field of EFL teaching and has played an important role in facilitating students to learn English well. Interview guides were employed as the main instrument to elicit information about PD activities related to language proficiency maintenance and improvement, comprising closed-ended and open-ended items. The participants of the study were six professional EFL teachers who have had 5 to 30 years of teaching experience, selected from high schools in a capital city in Indonesia. Data were analyzed descriptively to result in frequencies of importance levels and qualitatively to explore patterns of PD activities. The results showed that two factors affecting the participants’ acknowledgement of the importance of language proficiency PD activities: the need to maintain and improve language proficiency and the benefits of proficiency for teaching and learning. It is recommended that Indonesian EFL teachers develop self-awareness of the importance of improving their skills not only pedagogically but also professionally and realize that PD for language proficiency in particular is imperative to help them keep their professionalism high. </span>

Within the field of SLA, the incidence of nativelikeness in second language (L2) speakers has typically been explained as a function of age of acquisition. An alternative interpretation, however, is that L2 learners do not attain nativelike proficiency because of first language (L1) maintenance. This interpretation has nevertheless remained mostly theoretical due to the lack of empirical evidence. This study sets out to address the role of L1 proficiency in L2 ultimate attainment by examining L1 and L2 proficiency in 30 early L1 Spanish–L2 Swedish bilinguals. Language proficiency was assessed through grammaticality judgment tests and cloze tests, and additional data on language aptitude were collected through the Swansea Language Aptitude Test (v.2.0; Meara, Milton, & Lorenzo-Dus, 2002). The results showed positive correlations between nativelike L1 and L2 behavior. Additionally, it was found that language aptitude was positively correlated with nativelike L1 and L2 performance. In view of these findings, it is suggested that (a) L1 maintenance does not hamper L2 nativelikeness and (b) language aptitude is an important factor for bilingual ultimate attainment.

Heritage language (HL) proficiency confers developmental benefits; however, the onset of HL loss is observed among many young children from immigrant families. In this longitudinal study, transactional associations between children’s HL proficiency and supportive family climate were examined in Chinese immigrant families with pre-school-aged children. Parental warmth, cultural maintenance values, and use of HL support were investigated as aspects of family climate. Measures included observable parent–child interactions and performance-based language proficiency assessments. While parental cultural maintenance values appeared influential, parental behavioral support of HL showed more robust prospective associations with children’s HL development. Concurrently, children’s earlier HL proficiency predicted subsequent parental behavior; parents whose children had limited HL proficiency decreased their use of HL support 1 later. Implications of the findings are discussed for immigrant parents with young children.

Ten native Chinese-speaking children and adolescents who immigrated to the United States between ages 5 and 16 were studied for 3 years. The changes in their language preferences, language environments, and proficiency in English, their second language (L2), as well as Chinese, their first language (L1), were measured quantitatively and qualitatively. Participants with arrival ages of 9 or younger switched their language preference from L1 to L2 within the first year, were exposed to a significantly richer L2 than L1 environment, and became more proficient in L2 than in L1. The older participants maintained their preference for L1 across the 3 years, were exposed to a significantly richer L1 than L2 environment, and maintained L1 as the more proficient language. Interactions among L1 proficiency, peer interactions, social abilities, and cultural preferences jointly influenced the dominant language switch or maintenance processes.

Abstract This study examines the sustainability of gains in overall English proficiency made by 81 German students on ERASMUS study abroad placements in the UK (lasting one term or one academic year) following their return to their home country. Students were tracked using C-tests and questionnaires from pre-study abroad up until nine months post-return. Their development was compared with that of 25 peers who applied for ERASMUS placements, but continued studying at home. The analysis presented focuses on the post-return phase and includes factors associated with individual differences in L2 proficiency development post-return, self-perceived L2 skills development, and returnees’ perceived needs regarding further language classes. Results show that students tended to sustain gains in overall L2 proficiency made during study abroad. L2 proficiency level achieved by the end of study abroad, self-efficacy in using the L2 in social interactions, and majoring in English were all positively associated with post-return L2 development.

The purpose of the study was to investigate fully English proficient (FEP) students in an elementary maintenance bilingual bicultural program. Specifically the study examined oral language proficiency in Spanish, academic achievement levels, and attitudes of FEP students who attended a bilingual education program over a period of five or six consecutive years. Levels or oral acquisition in Spanish were measured on the Student Oral Language Observation Matrix (SOLOM); levels of student academic achievement were measured by the Iowa Test of Basic Skills; and student attitudes were measured by an attitude inventory designed by the researcher. A questionnaire for parents of FEP students provided additional information about students and influential factors affecting the parental decisions to enroll FEP children in a bilingual education program. The research design was a descriptive case study involving twenty-seven FEP students in two fifth grade bilingual classes and the parents of these students. Proficiency ratings on the SOLOM, stanines on the ITBS, and attitudes expressed on the inventory were examined to determine if FEP students developed L2 proficiency (or bilingualism) in this program, if the academic achievement of the FEP students was affected by the development of bilingualism, and student attitudes toward Spanish and the minority culture or community. Parents of the FEP students responded to a written questionnaire inquiring about their children's development in speaking Spanish, in scholastic achievement, and in attitudes. Parent interviews were conducted to confirm and expand the written responses. Results indicated that FEP students developed oral proficiency in Spanish along with positive attitudes toward learning to communicate in Spanish. Attitudes toward Mexican culture and the Mexican-American community were also positive. There was no evidence of negative or positive correlation between the development of bilingualism and academic achievement. The information obtained from the parent questionnaires and interviews reinforced the data collected on site about the students, and indicated that the most influential factors for enrolling their children in this bilingual educational program were: (1) to encourage the development of bilingualism and biculturalism in the students; and (2) to provide the children with an excellent curriculum. In conclusion, the findings suggested that maintenance bilingual bicultural programs can result in majority language student development of bilingualism and positive attitudes toward minority languages and cultures, with no detrimental effects on L1 or on academic achievement in English.

The present dissertation examined the language use, proficiency and beliefs of child heritage language learners (HLLs) from Spanish and Chinese heritage language (HL) backgrounds exposed to English as a second language (L2) upon school entry (N=63). Data were collected via HL and L2 proficiency measures and a semi-structured interview and pictorial measure, during the primary years, a period noted for HL loss (Wong Fillmore, 1991). Study 1 focused on patterns of language input and use in children’s lives. Children mostly used L2 in their activities and in their interactions with siblings, cousins and peers. With parents, grandparents and older relatives, children mostly used HL. Study 2 investigated children’s proficiency and changes in proficiency across HL and L2 language and literacy domains. Children appraised their HL oral language skills at low to moderate levels, and viewed their HL literacy skills as very low. Contrarily, their appraisals of L2 skills were uniformly high across all domains. Children demonstrated limited HL proficiency, whereas they demonstrated moderate L2 skills in all domains. Concordance between perceived and demonstrated proficiency was low, with only one in three children accurate in their self-evaluations. While children indicated loss, stability and growth in their HL skills equally, most children indicated growth in L2 skills since beginning school. Children demonstrated growth in HL oral language and reading and in all L2 domains. Qualitative analysis indicated that children overwhelmingly referenced markers of language and literacy skill in explanations of their appraisals. Other attributions for proficiency and changes in proficiency included assistance from others, different learning approaches, the influence of language environments, and feedback received from others. Study 3 investigated children’s affects and beliefs in relation to HL and L2 situations. Positive affect was associated with listening and speaking HL in the home context, and with L2 across all domains and contexts. Skill in the domain or language was a common rationale for children’s affective responses to language and literacy situations. Children also associated their affect with interest in the target domain/language, availability of assistance, membership in language groups and the influence of language environments. Considerations for further research with this population and recommendations for relevant parties are discussed.

Migration entails adjustment and change, a process crystallized in the way language use patterns, proficiencies and identifications change. Although migrants are often bi/ multilingual, their language proficiency tends to be associated with fluency in the host language. Such a monolingual approach is fundamentally at odds with the ethnolinguistic diversity in migration contexts and has prevented a more holistic approach to the dynamic realities of bi/multilinguals. It has also perpetuated a view of linguistic proficiency as technical skill, judged according to idealized monolingual norms. Little is known of speakers' own notions of proficiency in their existing migrant languages (ML) and the impact on their socialpsychological makeup as their linguistic repertoire undergoes changes in use, function and status. This research investigated proficiency as a matter of conceptualization through its users, including its role for migrants' continued sense of self in the face of sociolinguistic discontinuities. A three-phase research design involving focus groups, a postal survey and follow-up interviews was used with a sample of migrants from a wide range of ethnolinguistic backgrounds. The study found evidence for a multidimensional conceptualization of migrant language proficiency (MLP) with a complex range of underlying motivations and a strong emotional attachment to ML, revealing ML as a linguistic resource crucial for self-construction. The present study aimed to provide a deeper understanding of the dynamic nature of these matters to contribute to a socio-culturally grounded view of proficiency and self-concept to help reveal some of the complex processes associated with migrants' social, cultural and psychological wellbeing. The study proposes bi/multilingualism as a settlement target to facilitate this outcome and to foster a sense of self that accommodates multiple identities. Investment in languages promotes an inclusive society of global citizens and complements New Zealand's official Māori/English bilingualism.

In particular, mitigation of climate change requires sustainable solutions for new as well as existing structures. Taking from both practice and research, this book provides engineers with applicable, timely, and innovative information on the state-of-the-art in sustainable structural design. <p>This Structural Engineering Document addresses safety and regulations, integration concepts, and a sustainable approach to structural design. Life-cycle assessment is presented as a critical tool to quantify design options, and the importance of existing structures–in particular cultural heritage structures–is critically reviewed. Consideration is also given to bridge design and maintenance, structural reassessment, and disaster risk reduction. Finally, the importance of environmentally friendly concrete is examined. Consequently, structural engineers are shown to have the technical proficiency, as well as ethical imperative, to lead in designing a sustainable future.

However, candidates preparing for non-ABIM examinations also may benefit from the information, which covers various aspects of preparation for an examination, strategies to answer the questions effectively, and avoidance of pitfalls. The ABIM has stated that the certifying examination tests the breadth and depth of a candidate's knowledge in internal medicine to ensure that a candidate has attained the necessary proficiency required for the practice of internal medicine. According to the ABIM, the examination has 2 goals: the first is to ensure competence in the diagnosis and treatment of common disorders that have important consequences for patients, and the second is to ensure excellence in the broad domain of internal medicine.

This chapter examined the role of NGOs in water and sanitation improvement and the effects on the residence of Tunayilli in the Sagnarigu District. The design was descriptive. Questionnaires and interview guides were administered to household heads and key informants. Findings revealed that the water and sanitation condition in Tunayilli is generally poor. NGOs play diverse roles including the provision of water and sanitation facilities, community mobilization, and facility maintenance to ensure their sustained usability. However, inadequate funding, weak community mobilization, poor maintenance culture, and low education are challenges to water and sanitation improvement programmes of NGOs in the community. Measures to mitigate these includes increased central government funding, public education, community involvement, enforcement of sanitation by-laws, and regular maintenance of water and sanitation systems in the community. Stakeholders should intensify and sustain their educational campaigns. Meanwhile, by-laws on water and sanitation should be enforced and offenders prosecuted.

This chapter examined the link between ecological governance and water conservation as sustainable pathways for enhancing rural livelihoods in the Savannah Region. Designs adopted were post-positivist and cross-sectional. Probability sampling techniques were used to sample 450 household and official respondents. Questionnaires were administered, while descriptive statistics and chi-square test were utilised to analyse the data. Findings showed significant relationship between conservation initiatives, finance, rehabilitation/maintenance, and gender inclusion and domestic water conservation. Therefore, with commitment to maintenance, funding, and gender inclusion in water decisions, there is the likely for water to be locally sustainable in rural communities of the region. Democratic, decentralised, and participatory approaches to ecological governance and empowerment of the local communities are recommended as essential preconditions for achieving ecologically self-governing communities and sustaining domestic water systems in the rural areas of the region.

Since this is a beginning of a new holistic approach, one of the most difficult issues is preparation of a circular designer's brief, which will be helpful at all phases of design, construction, maintenance, end of building's life, and various types of material loops. Currently there is no single approach. Basically, it exists more as a general attitude statement and still has to be developed. This chapter will include some thoughts and possibilities as to the design approach and management that can be used for various different projects. Some design outcomes from studios run by the author jointly with members of Faculty of Architecture staff are included. These deal with some circular solutions proposed to the students for further development. Two case studies presented in the appendices will prove that circular approach should be used in various harsh environments, as well as city conditions.

Semiarid ecosystems of Chile with Mediterranean climate support high demographic rates and maintain important economies associated with the productivity of the natural environment; however, they strongly depend on the water availability and their future is compromised by climate variations. This study tries to define the role of hydrological variables on the growth of herbaceous biomass under the current climate and under future weather variations. For this, the authors used meteorological stations which let them estimate the water balance at plot scale and spectral reflectance sensors which let them follow the dynamics of the NDVI of herbaceous plants. In this context, the NDVI value was about 0.7, which means approximately 3700 kg DM ha1. However, under the worst-case climate change scenarios (RCP 8.5), annual precipitation showed a reduction of up to 31.6% regarding the present period. In this situation, the NDVI could be reduced up to 80% respect to the current situation. Thus, if climate changes to its worst scenario, it could threaten the maintenance and productivity of these ecosystems.

South Africa has long recognised the need to eliminate energy poverty, and significant progress has been made since 1996. With the recent global outcry about the use of sustainable and clean energy sources for human and ecological development, it has become essential for countries to upscale the use of non-grid electrification in order to effectively and sustainably eradicate energy poverty. South Africa implements different non-grid electrification programmes which focuses on ensuring universal access to clean energy by all, with one of these initiatives being the Solar Home Systems Programme. This study aims to contribute to academic discussion and knowledge about the role that solar home systems can play in bringing change on the current status of the energy poverty eradication initiatives which negatively affect the environment and the people. The study used a qualitative approach in assessing how the Solar Home Systems Programme contributes to energy poverty eradication and environmental preservation if managed in line with ecological governance principles. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a total of 40 households in Limpopo and officials from government departments in the province as well as a service provider responsible for the roll-out and maintenance of solar home systems in Limpopo. Framed within the ecological economics theory which advocates for ecological and environmental solutions that take into consideration the future generation, the study established that the solar home systems can eradicate energy poverty and contribute to the protection of the environment if managed in line with ecological governance principles. The study further revealed that the Solar Home Systems Programme in South Africa failed due to lack of proper governance systems that provide solutions for the future as the programme was short-term focused and lacked proper ecological governance systems. In order for the solar home systems to contribute to energy poverty eradication and environmental protection, the study recommends a total overhaul of the programme which includes ensuring that the provision of SHSs is not viewed as a temporary measure that is only meant for poor rural households but a long-term and sustainable initiative.

In this chapter, the phenomenon of continuous improvement is introduced and it is suggested that conscious processes play a crucial role in the maintenance and improvement of performance proficiency among skilled performers. This thesis is intriguing because it runs counter to a body of research warning us of the perils of thinking too much, or even at all, about highly practised movement. By contrast, it argues that continuous improvement is mediated by a performer’s ability to reflect and consciously guide their action during practice and performance. It critically evaluates some of the dominant paradigms in the skill acquisition literature, including information processing approaches and theories of embodiment, and explains why the book’s stance is intellectualist and pragmatic in nature. Lastly, it provides an overview of the remaining chapters in the book.

The final chapter synthesizes the arguments presented over the course of the book by suggesting that skill execution continues to be governed by conscious processes even after performers have attained a high level of expertise. It argues that skill-focused attention is necessary if experts are to eschew proceduralization and react flexibly to ‘crises’ and fine-grained changes in situational demands. In doing so, it discusses the role played by conscious control, reflection, and bodily awareness in maintaining performance proficiency. It suggests that skill maintenance and continuous improvement are underpinned by the use of both automated procedures (acknowledging that these are inherently active and flexible) and metacognitive knowledge. The chapter concludes by briefly considering how skill-focused attention needs to be applied in both training and performance contexts in order to facilitate continuous improvement.

The inseparable relationship between Japan and China spans 1,400 years from the kentoshi (official envoys from Japan to China) and kanbun kyoiku (漢文教育‎)—the study of ancient Chinese literary works, an essential part of the Japanese school curriculum. An increasing population of Chinese residents and visitors signifies a cultural ‘tilt’ towards Chinese in Japanese society. The linguistic landscape includes multilingual signs, public information, Chinese language manuals and restaurant menus, and Chinatowns (Yokohama, Kobe, Nagasaki). There is dialectal and generational language variation in the bilingual Huaqiao 華僑‎(overseas Chinese) community. Heritage language maintenance is a major concern. Newcomer parents mostly abandon teaching Chinese to their children. The boom in Chinese language learning worldwide has led to numerous standardized proficiency tests; half a million students are engaged in Chinese language study in 86% of all Japanese universities.

Sky-high renewable energy demands urged the revolutionary development of environment benign, portable and miniatured, high power generating energy storage systems in the form of electrochemical capacitors commonly known as “supercapacitors” or “ultracapacitors”. Supercapacitor designing requires smart electrode materials for providing higher energy and power densities, mechanical and electrochemical durability, enhanced thermal operating range with minimal production and maintenance cost. Polyaniline, as conducting polymer, particularly in nano-morphology, has been one of the pioneer electroactive materials paving the corridor for commercial development of pseudocapacitors. Considering these points, the chapter initially concentrates on basic concepts of fabrication, designing and performance evaluation procedure of supercapacitors, followed by discussion on the role of PANI as potential supercapacitor electrode material, delineating current achievements and major challenges encountered in the process of progress so as to obtain superior electrochemical energy storage systems in the near future.

Nuclear utilities have many kilometres of piping buried in a relatively small physical area resulting in what has been called a “spaghetti bowl”. Until recently, much of this piping has been neglected and considered “out of sight / out of mind” therefore given a low operational impact. However, current failures have raised the profile of buried piping maintenance with both utilities and regulators. Buried piping programs face many of the challenges familiar to well run maintenance programs, but these challenges are compounded for a number of reasons. This paper will discuss how Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) Nuclear Laboratories have partnered with utilities, service providers, CANDU Owners Group (COG), and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to provide support to the development and implementation of maintenance programs for buried piping. Initially, AECL developed station strategy manuals to establish a mechanism to ensure a proficient ongoing program. As part of this program, extensive data on the systems was collected using station records. This data was then used to produce risk informed assessments, with the help of EPRI’s BPWORKS™ software, and ultimately the selection of inspection locations. Lessons learned from this work have not only been integrated into the station’s buried piping program, but also incorporated into improvements to the EPRI BPWORKS software.

Abstract Target reservoir and production characterization study was carried out in Pematang Lantih field, Jambi, Indonesia. The Talang Akar Formation has 10 underlying reservoirs from 600 m to 900m TVDSS. This multi-layers sandstone structure is driven by regional tectonic stress and complicated by several faults. Sharp oil well production decline was observed during 3 years period since initial production in 2015, with GOR increase. Arresting production decline was the key objective for efficiency increase, hence improved reservoir characterization was needed, as cross-well reservoir properties/interference were unclear. Multiwell Retrospective Test (MRT) is a recent development used to study reservoirs by carrying out automatic matching of historical production rates and bottom hole. It provides practical, fast yet robust analysis for reservoir evaluation. It can quantify inter-well pressure interference and evaluate cross-well reservoir properties. The main goal of this study was to get better reservoir understanding and evaluate ability of this technique to deliver additional value at current reservoir conditions, considering initial data availability/quality. The key technology element used is multi-well pressure deconvolution, which is a highly parallelizable decoding algorithm running on multi-core workstation. The analysis is carried out on historical well pressure and production data. Hence no field operation is needed and there is no production deferment since it does not require additional field data acquisition. The technique delivers formation pressure history and productivity index history in tested well reconstruction. It is also proficient to reconstruct cross-well interference and estimate cross-well transmissibility from offset wells towards the tested well. Another result is evaluation of formation pressure decline impact on oil production of the existing wells. The study area has reservoir pressure that dropped below bubble point and continues declining. Historical data over 3 years, from a cell consisting of 4 producers was analyzed using this technique. The analysis found uniform formation transmissibility between the analyzed wells at Pematang Lantih field. Transmissibility was estimated by analyzing cross-well transient responses (CTR) calculated with multi-well deconvolution. CTR is a function representing BHP response to neighbor well single rate production. CTR is interpreted with interference test technique thus estimating transmissibility values. The analysis result confirmed that all 3 offset wells have a pressure impact towards the pressure-tested well (PLT-X) with quantified values. Connectivity analysis showed the expectation of rapid production decline if there was no pressure maintenance system. The recommendation was to estimate the economics of pressure maintenance system implementation in order to improve production performance. By using multi-well deconvolution analysis, the entire 3-years cell production history was converted into a single unit-rate pressure transient that enabled deep reservoir investigation and calculation of field reserves undisturbed by dynamic well boundaries.
