This chapter deals with the practical aspects of designing, building and operating calorimeters. These aspects concern the structure of the detector (longitudinal and lateral segmentation, projective towers, hermeticity of 4π‎ devices), the readout of calorimeters based on detection of either light or charge signals, the operation in a magnetic field or at high luminosity, and the effects of radiation damage and how to deal with these. Also discussed are procedures for handling the signals, and using these to create triggers that may be used to select events of interest. Auxiliary equipment that may make such triggers more selective (preshower detectors, shower max detectors, etc.) is described as well.

This chapter describes a multistable stimulus that reveals the complexity of visual processing that underlies the determination of an object’s form and motion. The stimulus is constructed by placing an ellipse on a uniform background and then partially occluding it with four squares, each with the same color as the background. When the ellipse is made to rotate, it can be perceived in any of four distinct ways, and, over time, the percept will switch between them. Each percept corresponds to a distinct figure-ground segmentation that is determined on the basis of contour ownership and how different sources of motion information are assigned to contours and integrated over space and time.

This chapter examines possible discrimination against female farm managers with respect to prices or market segmentation. Patterns of commercialization are fluid. Particular countries stand out with respect to certain crops, however: for maize, a growing bias against female farm managers can be noted in Zambia. Mozambique, Malawi, and to a lesser extent Tanzania stand out in terms of non-grain food crops, where market participation by male farm managers had increased relative to female-headed households. Poorer commercial possibilities are tied strongly to production factors, where lack of labour and land prevent the generation of a marketable surplus. An important distinction is that between women who manage their own farms and women who live in households headed by men: for the former the lack of access to agrarian resources prevents generation of a marketable surplus for the latter the outcomes from sales are controlled by their husbands.

This book offers a comprehensive and deep examination of the key labor market issues in Tunisia, including the size, structure, and evolution of the labor force, employment and unemployment, wage formation, gender differences, education, and migration. Unemployment has been the most challenging issue for decades. Because it has been persistently high and particularly acute for youth, university graduates, and women, special attention is paid to youth and women in the labor market and to the structure, education, and evolution of the labor force. Despite the falling-off of its population growth, Tunisia continues to experience strong labor supply pressures due to the rapid growth of higher education graduates and the mismatch between the skills produced by the education system and those needed by the market. The lack of good formal jobs, the segmentation of the labor market and the income and wage inequalities are also the outcome of the regulations and institutions governing the labor market. Women in the lagging regions and educated young women face the most serious insertion challenges. Yet, young women’s educational attainment has exceeded that of young men. And women have also made substantial progress in gaining greater control over their lives and their wellbeing. Although severe forms of child labor are not widespread, 6 percent of children are involved in unpaid activities within the household, and dropout of school remains an important issue. The evolution and effects of migration are also examined.
