Dr. Eleine Mad is Madeleine Jacobsson's spokesperson for the scientific and paranormal discoveries that arise in her worlds. She describes content, tecniques and aesthetics based on a categorization system where art is divided into different types of components and then decoded as they go. To understand the intuition's involvement in the work process, it is transformed into three separate roles by a Seeker, Collector and a Myntare(In swedish language the one who is a "myntare" -is verbally declaring a concept or term). With these roles I try to describe in what ways intuition is beneficial or devastating to the artistic work. The story of M is about a frog-like character, Delop, who leaves the home planet to seek out other worlds. In her search, Delop finds a world whose views and lifestyles differ from her experiences of "reality" as she learned to survive in it.

ABSTRACT "Music for the Mad: A study of the madness in Purcell's mad songs" Ester Lebedinski, Uppsala University, Sweden, Department of Musicology, 2009. Madness was a stock topic in seventeenth-century drama, and music a compulsory feature on the Restoration stage. Henry Purcell's contributions to the latter are abundant, and include the popular combination of madness and music in his mad songs for Thomas Durfey's comedies. This essay aims at exploring the depiction of madness through music, verbal text and dramatic context in Purcell's mad songs for Durfey's plays A Fool's Preferment (1688), The Richmond Heiress (1693) and part I and III of The Comical History of Don Quixote (1694 and 1696 respectively). Particular emphasis is laid on text illustration and the songs' placement in the dramatic context. Madness is discussed as a deviation from the accepted norm, as the anormal demarcated from the normal. Conclusively, Purcell's mad songs are characterized by their variousness e.g. rapid changes between keys, styles, moods and subject matters, as opposed to the relative continuousness of songs not depicting madness, and their sometimes exaggerated word paintings. Purcell's music does not independently express madness, but the illustration of madness is linked to the verbal text and the dramatic context, highlighted and completed through Purcell's music.

Using a multi-case study, three Ponzi schemes were investigated: Road2Gold, Bernie Madoff’s empire, and the Earl Jones affair. This grounded study used an inductive bottom-up methodology to observe and describe stakeholder mobilization in reaction to corporate fraud. This research on stakeholder behaviour in Ponzi schemes articulates new theory for describing stakeholder behaviour and possible determinants for successful mobilization to action. The data presented here point to a useful distinction in the stakeholders in a corporate fraud: reluctant and engaged stakeholders. Reluctant stakeholders seek only interest-based ends, whereas engaged stakeholders have additional identity and ideological goals shared by a mobilized group.

This trio of stories explores the cost of our increasingly commercialized, globalized society in a fictional future setting. They contain some dystopian science fiction elements in the tradition of George Orwell and Aldous Huxley. The antagonist and central focus of all three stories is Hobbes Sylvan, an entitled white southerner whose gradual transformation into activist, criminal, and finally cyberterrorist is chronicled through the successive stories. The titular "Programmer," Hobbes Sylvan is both manipulator and product of the fictional future world she inhabits. Through the ethical dilemmas she faces the reader is asked to examine questions of morality in our own society. The stories are self-contained but connected, with different protagonists and conflicts but similar thematic material. They are told in first person, in epistolary (email) format, and in third person respectively, and set in chronological order.

Madness has long been a popular theme for literature, featuring as a trope of horror, mystery, tragedy and comedy genres in varying degrees of amplitude. The topic has provided a significant access point for analysing historical, socio-political and cultural issues as it addresses controversial themes of alienation and criminality as well as philosophical theories of perception and consciousness. As a result, studies on the representation of madness in literature have been dominated by historical approaches that focus directly on social, political, philosophical and psychoanalytical interpretive models. Comparatively little has been done to analyse madness in literature from a narratological perspective. It is for this reason that I will conduct a narratological study on the impact of madness on narrative and fictional world structures. I am specifically interested in the way in which madness can be embedded across multiple levels of the narrative and the effect that this has on readers’ imaginative and interpretive processes. Close readings of Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club (1996) Bret Easton-Ellis’ American Psycho (1991) and John Banville’s The Book of Evidence (1989) will uncover some of the techniques that are used to embed madness into the textual and imaginative structures of a narrative, and will demonstrate how this works to deceive and challenge the reader. I will demonstrate the need for an expansion of terms within the narratological model that can cope specifically with the theme of madness.

Mad Pursuits: Therapeutic Narration in Postwar American Fiction examines three mid-century American novels—J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye (1951), Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man (1952), and Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar (1963)—in relation to the rise and popularization of psychoanalytic theory in America. The study historicizes these landmark novels as representing and interrogating postwar America’s confidence in the therapeutic capacity of narrative to redress psychological problems. Drawing on key concepts from narrative theory and the multidisciplinary field of narrative and identity studies, I argue that these texts develop a multi-layered, formal problematization of therapeutic narration: the narrativization of the self through modes of interpretation based on character action and development. The study, thus, investigates how the texts both critique the purported effectiveness of being healed through narrative means, as well as how they problematize their society’s investment in this method. I propose that the novels ultimately explore submerged possibilities for realizing what I call fugitive selves by creating self-representations that negotiate and exceed the confines of the paradigmatic models of plot and character of the period. In Chapter One, I argue that the ego and pop psychological movements during the postwar era encouraged the American public to define and realize psychological health, success and happiness through narrativized means. I show in Chapter Two how careful differentiation between narrative levels of interpretation in The Bell Jar reveals the novel’s complication of the self created in narrative, with and against the socio-cultural scripts and therapeutic assumptions of the period. Chapter Three concentrates on The Catcher in the Rye’s various methods of de-composing the narrative identity of the subject created through developmental and therapeutic narration. In the final chapter, I read Invisible Man as a satire of postwar psychoanalytic theory and method specifically concerning racialized narrative identities, and as a reflection on a method of enduring psychological illness. The Conclusion brings together several argumentative strands running throughout the dissertation regarding what the novels contrastively reveal about the perils, and even the possibilities, inherent in the narrativizing of the self in early postwar America.

Abstract: 20 – 50 % of patients are in nutritional risk on admission to hospital. 40 % of the patients do not receive an adequate amount of energy and protein to cover the daily need for nutrition and health professionals knowledge about nutritional needs to underweight patients are limited. In 2002 a nutritional screening tool, which can be used to estimate the nutritional status in all patients admitted to Sygehus Sønderjylland was developed. It is now possible to estimate nutritional status at an early stage and start nutritional treatment with the purpose to avoid under nutrition. This leads to improved life skills for the patient and consequences of under nutrition are limited. The theoretical context of this study contains elements from a health promotion perspective, system thinking, quality- and implementation processes and postmodernism. Purpose: Developing and testing of a tool that can determine the quality of nutritional treatment and care given by health professionals to undernourished patients. Method: A quantitative questionnaire, survey, has been carried out.Result: The result of the survey does not provethat health professionals under the implementation process have increased their knowledge about the undernourished patients. In relation to the nutritional screening tool only minimum of improvement in knowledge has been detected as a result of increased documentation. Still the working routines in the nutritional area among health professionals are unclear and the cross-sectional and interdisciplinary co-operation is invisible. The result of this survey does not show any improvement related to the nutritional effect of the undernourished patient. Conclusion: An implementation process of a nutritional screening tool takes more than one year and it is necessary to continue the quality and improvements in the nutritional area. Quality and managing change will high light a health promoting area. If change in working routines and values among health professionals is wanted, the challenge is to use tools from system thinking and improvement strategies. When health professionals get the opportunity to create ownership and responsibility for an implementation process in a health promoting area, the effect of quality management will become larger and more attractive. Keywords in future implementation processes are quality and managing change as well as focus on value-based management and to start learning processes

People who are diagnosed with 'severe mental illness' experience some of the most extreme and pervasive prejudice of all groups in Western society. How can this still be so? Although the term 'mental illness' is typically reserved for the most 'serious' of 'cases', psychiatry's medical model is expanding into increasingly everyday realms. Thus, in concert with efforts to reduce social stigma, 'mental illness' is becoming 'normal'. Nevertheless, 'abnormality' is a requirement of biopsychiatry and its offshoots; professionals require some 'thing' to remedy. How do 'clinical' professionals manage these tensions? And what alternatives are there to the pathologizing of such phenomena? Such concerns are considered in relation to my main thesis question: How do professionals represent 'schizophrenia' and hearing voices in theoretical texts, and how is that played out in the minutiae of therapy practices? Drawing on discourse analysis and conversation analysis, I critique professional categorizations of what are typically known as 'schizophrenia', 'mental illness', 'patients', 'clients', and 'therapists'. My case in point is the experience of hearing voices - pathologically known as 'auditory hallucinations'. 'Delusional' beliefs are also considered. In Part 1, accounts of voices as supernatural or ordinary phenomena, or as a 'symptom' of 'severe mental illness', are considered. Mainstream psychiatric and psychological texts are analyzed and critical alternatives are summarized. In Part 2, a selection of studies of interactions involving 'severe mental illness' are reviewed and ongoing analytic/methodological debates are discussed. A cognitivebehavioural therapy group for hearing distressing voices then provides data from 'clinical' talk-in-interaction for analysis. I focus on negotiations of 'reality' (the ordinary versus the psychiatric) and on what I take to be sanist prejudice-in-action. Part 3 relates findings from Part 2 to the context and findings of Part 1. There is also discussion of the positive implications of a more social and dialogical approach to understanding and otherwise dealing with the phenomena in question; for voice hearers, 'schizophrenics', and society at large.

The textual analysis of season four, episode one of Mad Men entitled “Public Relations” study the productions values in terms of feminist motifs. By using social codes developed by Leed-Hurwitz and Barthes’ five systems of meaning in semiotics, observations are made about the elements of the mise-en-scène in relation to the gender roles present in the narrative. If certain codes persist, it is assumed that these repetitive observations reflect the deliberate composition of the mise-en-scènce in order to reinforce feminist motifs. The results reveal that the production values in the mise-en-scène indeed reinforce feminist motifs in Mad Men, the most comprehensive motif being the male gender as the norm. The messages communicated by this motif include the idea that masculinity is defined by sex and that a women’s worth is defined by masculinity

Memory is central to Mad Men (Matthew Weiner 2007-15) as a period piece set in the 1960s that activates the memories of its viewers while also depicting the subjective memory processes of its protagonist Donald Draper (Jon Hamm). Narratively, as much as Don may try to move forward and forget his past, he ultimately cannot because the memories will always remain. Utilizing the philosophy of Henri Bergson, I reveal that the series effectively renders Bergson’s notion of the coexistence of past and present in sequences that journey into the past without ever leaving the present. Mad Men ushers in a new era of philosophical television that is not just perceived, but also remembered. As a long-form serial narrative that intricately layers past upon present, Mad Men is itself an evolving memory that can be revisited by the viewer who gains new insight upon each viewing. Mad Men is the ideal intersection of Bergson’s philosophy of the mind and memory and Gilles Deleuze’s cinematic philosophy of time. The first chapter simply titled “Time,” examines the series’ first flashback sequence from the episode “Babylon,” in it finding the Deleuzian time-image. The last chapter “Space,” seeks to identify the spatial structure of the series as a whole and how it relates to its slow-burning pace. Chapter two, “Memory,” highlights the viewer’s memory making processes, and appropriately bridges “Time” and “Space” together, just as it bridges spatial and temporal consciousness together for the individual. This thesis emphasizes the individualized experience of the Mad Men viewer who watches Don evolve over seven seasons. Two narrative structural aspects of the series are shown to be especially activating of the viewer’s memory: its flashback sequences and its meditative moments featuring Don in deep contemplation. With reference to literary theory that has identified the concepts of Bergson in the modernist literature movement, as well as to Bergson’s schemas that precisely illustrate his concepts, this thesis concludes that Mad Men can be understood as a carousel that takes viewers on a trip through the circuitry of memory.

People who are diagnosed with ‘severe mental illness’ experience some of the most extreme and pervasive prejudice of all groups in Western society. How can this still be so? Although the term ‘mental illness’ is typically reserved for the most ‘serious’ of ‘cases’, psychiatry’s medical model is expanding into increasingly everyday realms. Thus, in concert with efforts to reduce social stigma, ‘mental illness’ is becoming ‘normal’. Nevertheless, ‘abnormality’ is a requirement of biopsychiatry and its offshoots; professionals require some ‘thing’ to remedy. How do ‘clinical’ professionals manage these tensions? And what alternatives are there to the pathologizing of such phenomena? Such concerns are considered in relation to my main thesis question: How do professionals represent ‘schizophrenia’ and hearing voices in theoretical texts, and how is that played out in the minutiae of therapy practices? Drawing on discourse analysis and conversation analysis, I critique professional categorizations of what are typically known as ‘schizophrenia’, ‘mental illness’, ‘patients’, ‘clients’, and ‘therapists’. My case in point is the experience of hearing voices - pathologically known as ‘auditory hallucinations’. ‘Delusional’ beliefs are also considered. In Part 1, accounts of voices as supernatural or ordinary phenomena, or as a ‘symptom’ of ‘severe mental illness’, are considered. Mainstream psychiatric and psychological texts are analyzed and critical alternatives are summarized. In Part 2, a selection of studies of interactions involving ‘severe mental illness’ are reviewed and ongoing analytic/methodological debates are discussed. A cognitivebehavioural therapy group for hearing distressing voices then provides data from ‘clinical’ talk-in-interaction for analysis. I focus on negotiations of ‘reality’ (the ordinary versus the psychiatric) and on what I take to be sanist prejudice-in-action. Part 3 relates findings from Part 2 to the context and findings of Part 1. There is also discussion of the positive implications of a more social and dialogical approach to understanding and otherwise dealing with the phenomena in question; for voice hearers, ‘schizophrenics’, and society at large.

The Nature Conservancy of Texas (TNC) is concerned with the amount of shoreline erosion taking place at its Mad Island Marsh Preserve (MIMP), located in Matagorda Bay, Texas. The MIMP is a 7,100 acre nature preserve that borders the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and is eroded by waves generated by barge traffic. TNC is concerned that erosion will shorten Mad Island Bayou which may increase the salinity of Mad Island Lake; with detrimental effects on lake and marsh habitats. This study uses GPS technology to map the current shoreline and GIS to determine ten year erosion rates (1995 - 2005). Results show that erosion is occurring at various rates along the shoreline as well as along the oxbow bend in Mad Island Bayou.

This thesis is a study of the gender politics through musical discourse in the Mad Max series. Dystopian narratives are particularly interesting texts for study of gender because they allow for extreme hypothetical situations in worlds that are at once familiar and unfamiliar. Musical discourse in the Mad Max films both supports and complicates dominant readings of gender constructions. I consider the gender politics of the franchise, using Mad Max (1979) and Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) as case studies, and drawing on scholarship on gender in film music, feminist film theory, and Australian car culture. In analyzing this music, I consider its broader cultural connotations, including film music tropes and operatic character types. After considering these genre associations, I analyze the musical gestures for narrative content and consider how the placement of themes with images and dialogue influences that content, with attention to how these factors contribute to a gendered understanding of the character. As the first deep thematic analysis of music in the Mad Max films, my project extends existing scholarship on both onscreen performance and gender categorizations that include musical forces resistant to strict binary categorization. My analysis of gendered musical discourse emphasizes the power of inquiry about gender in film music to clarify, enrich, and complicate texts.

High frequency trading has during the last couple of years grown to become a significant force in the financial markets, and therefore it has also gotten a lot of media attention. This media attention intensified on the 6 th of May 2010 when the so called "Flash Crash" occurred at the Dow Jones index in New York and affected markets all over the world. Our intention with this bachelor thesis is to critically examine high frequency trading as a phenomenon and the discussion that is taking place concerning further regulation of the trading. This will be done through an initial period of literature studies that will be complemented with in-depth interviews with different players in the market. Our results show that high frequency trading doesn´t come with such great negative effects as media would like to imply. The research that has been done on the subject indicates that the trading mainly adds positive effects in the form of increased liquidity and decreased volatility. The thesis will also address todays regulatory situation and analyse the proposals for additional regulation that has been discussed on an EU-level. Our analysis shows that many of the discussed proposals are directly misguided and doesn´t address the real problem – a situation that is struggling with unclear roles concerning supervision and monitoring.

Aerial morphology in higher plants is highly variable and demonstrates the ability of plants to adapt to prevailing conditions. Regulation of shoot branching is a vital aspect of plant growth, controlling shoot system architecture. The phytohormones; auxin, cytokinin, and strigolactone are closely involved in the regulation of bud outgrowth, and therefore shot branching, and the mechanisms by which they do this are of great scientific interest. The MAX (MORE AXILLARY GROWTH) pathway in Arabidopsis consists of a series of genes involved in strigolactone biosynthesis and signalling. Mutations in these genes have been used to great effect to elucidate the manner of auxin-mediated inhibition of shoot branching via the MAX pathway. The purpose of this study was twofold: Firstly, to characterise plants heterozygous for the semi-dominant mad (more apical dominance) mutation, which suppresses the max1 branching phenotype and secondly, to characterise the 17-4 mutant, which displays an increased branching phenotype similar to that of max2. Various physiological and genetic techniques were applied to this end. MAD/mad is not a general mediator of strigolactone signalling as it only affects the max1 branching phenotype. MAD/mad partially restores wild-type branching to all of the max mutants, suggesting that it acts either downstream of, or in parallel to, MAX2. The MAD locus is within a 370kb region on the p-arm of At. Chromosome 3. Among the 230 genes in this region are three of considerable interest, MES17, SPY, and AT3G11130.1 all with the potential for a role in the regulation of bud outgrowth and therefore all potential candidates for the MAD gene. 17-4 was isolated in a screen looking for mutants with high levels of branching in low nitrate conditions, and has striking morphological similarity to the well characterised max2 mutant. Complementation testing showed that 17-4 was not one of the currently recognised max2 alleles. This does not rule 17-4 out as a novel allele of max2. Increased branching in 17-4 is probably a result of increased auxin transport capacity and resistance to auxin-mediated suppression of bud outgrowth. 17-4 is not involved in strigolactone biosynthesis but appears to be involved in strigolactone signalling.

This thesis is concerned with criminal defendants who become psychiatrically hospitalised as the outcome of their court proceedings. There are four routes whereby criminal defendants can become hospitalised in New Zealand. These are to be found not guilty by reason of insanity, to found to be under disability, to be found guilty and mentally disordered and for charges to be dropped and proceedings initiated under the Mental Health (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act, 1992. The background to each of these options is explored, with an emphasis on the insanity defence, and the empirical literature reviewed. There are some theoretical contradictions in whether these legal provisions are therapeutic or punitive. The aim of the current study was to describe criminal defendants who enter the mental health system and become psychiatrically hospitalised via the Court Liaison Service. The Court Liaison Service is a part of the Regional Forensic Psychiatric Service. As part of this service, a nurse screens criminal defendants at court for indications that mental health intervention may be warranted. A sample of defendants, who were seen by the Court Liaison Service at Christchurch, is described. Of these defendants some receive a full psychiatric evaluation and a report is prepared for the courts. The characteristics of those who receive a report are compared with those who do not receive a report. Defendants, who are hospitalised as an outcome of their court proceedings, are compared with those who are not. The findings are consistent with international research, in that most defendants were male, and socially disadvantaged in a number of ways. The mental status screening assessment was a useful discriminator between those who received a report and those who did not, and between defendants who were hospitalised and those that were not. Most defendants who were hospitalised showed clear signs of psychotic processes. Defendants who received a report but who were not hospitalised are particularly vulnerable in terms of their mental health needs. This group showed more evidence of depression, and was rated to be of higher suicide risk. They tended to have psychopathic traits, and were more frequently referred because of concerns about dangerousness. A considerable proportion of all defendants have difficulties with substance abuse. Report and hospitalisation status could be effectively predicted, using information collected at the time of the Court Liaison screening. For example, using diagnosis and mental status data as predictor variables, there was 86% correct classification of cases as hospitalised or not. In conclusion, it is argued that the insanity defence serves little current pragmatic use. Revision is recommended in the current admission criteria to psychiatric hospitals for criminal defendants, with an emphasis on effective treatment programmes. The victim's perspective is not frequently considered in deliberations about mentally disordered offenders, and this is seen as important. Finally, the Court Liaison Service serves an extremely valuable function at the interface between the criminal justice and mental health systems in New Zealand.

The topic of this thesis pertains to how female characters are portrayed in the American period drama TV series Mad Men (2007–2015) that is set in the 1960s, and the main focus is on Margaret ‘Peggy’ Olson, who works as a copywriter at the fictional advertising agency Sterling Cooper. This thesis focuses on three main themes through which Peggy Olson’s journey in Mad Men are analyzed: appearance, obstacles in the workplace and sexual behavior in the workplace. The purpose of this research is to analyze such obstacles and forms of discrimination that women face in the workplace, and apply them to the context of Peggy Olson’s fictional career in Mad Men. Another main purpose of this thesis is to study the TV series in closer detail and to find out what is said about women and how these things are said — since Mad Men is a successful series, it is important to study what kind of image it portrays of women in order to understand its popularity and cultural significance. Mad Men is a topic that has been analyzed in several studies, but another purpose for conducting this thesis was to specifically analyze it from a work-based point of view since very few exist. The data that was used when conducting this paper consists of the series’ seven seasons, in DVD format. The theoretical background consists of different fields of research, and each section has their own theoretical background. In this thesis, the theoretical background consists of historical information about working women in the 1960s, television studies, and, most prominently, studies related to sexual harassment, gender-based obstacles and discrimination in the workplace. I have also utilized studies about appearance and relationships in the workplace. The conclusion of my analysis indicates that women in Mad Men often are discriminated against in the workplace due to the gender, women are expected to be attractive in order to please men, and that sexual harassment is rampant throughout the series. Despite this, Peggy Olson is able to defy these obstacles, have a successful career, and gain respect

Developments in advertising are necessarily tied to shifts in media technology – by this very fact, the industry has changed significantly since the 1960s. In the 21st century, ad men have to contend with an increasingly complex and fractured digital landscape. Big, traditional ad agencies – like those depicted in the popular television series Mad Men – no longer dominate; instead, they are forced to compete with a growing class of digital marketing start-ups for a stake in tomorrow’s adscape. Innovative ad serving technologies, instead of creative-driven campaigns, rule the day. Internet technologies have created an environment in which identifying and engaging consumers on an individual level is entirely possible; in effect, the software engineers and data scientists capable of executing these types of campaigns – the “Math Men” – have become the new industry luminaries. And yet, there is still something to be said about the importance of a sentimental bond between the consumer and product. The type of advertising practiced by Don Draper and his real-life counterparts is based in a fundamental truth about human decision-making: emotions are an integral aspect of information-processing. While there is truth to the Math Men’s core principle that, “Advertising should deliver the right information to the right person at the right time,” There is a good reason that brands such as Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and GE – all vestiges of the Mad Men era – remain some of the most valuable and celebrated in the world. The paper will argue that the future of powerful ad content is dependent upon an appreciation of the Mad Men's creative philosophy, emboldened by an understanding of the ways in which media – and by extension ad serving technology – has advanced since the 1960s.
