In Part 1 of this two-part paper, we review the development of open architecture controllers for machine tools. General design principles are described, followed by specific hardware and, software recommendations. These specific recommendations are then used for the construction of an open architecture device, MOSAIC-PM, (Machine tool Open System Advanced Intelligent Controller for Precision Machining). The machine has now been used in a wide variety of experiments to demonstrate open architecture control. These experiments include sensor based machining, rapid prototyping and manufacturing over the Internet. In Part 1, a specific application on feature based precision machining with on-machine acceptance is described. A more specific implementation of a quintic spline interpolation method is described in Part 2.

CNC machine tools are currently predominating in the machine-building industry. Generally, these machine tools are equipped with control systems supplied by the world's leading manufacturers, such as Siemens, Fanuc or HeidenHein, and are very expensive. In parallel, many cheap amateur and semi-professional CNC machine tool solutions are being developed. Below, a CNC milling machine of welded construction is described, which is intended to be, at the same time, a test stand. The design of the milling machine is based on steel closed sections of a large cross-section and a big wall thickness. This has allowed a rigid frame structure to be obtained. To obtain high displacement accuracy, high-accuracy profiled rail slideways have been used, along which pre-stressed linear ball bearings move. The machine tool has been furnished with a fourth numerically controlled axis, which is demountable.

The modular design system has recently become important, not only to rationalize the design and manufacturing procedures of the machine tool, but also to evolve the flexible manufacturing system. In this paper, therefore, to establish a design methodology for the modular construction system of machine tools, a generating method for structural configuration, i.e., a procedure of computer aided concept design has been proposed. The proposed method is of variant design type, in which a machine tool as a whole and modular complex are represented with the directed graph, it being suitable for the information processing and storage of data. When generating a structural configuration, at first, possible modular complexes in the data memory are referred to, and then through simple mathematical treatment they are integrated so as to form structural configurations. By this method, all possible structural configurations of the machine tool can be generated systematically and rationally, according to the machining requirement.

Machine tools are built based on cast-iron bodies. Cast iron well dumps down vibrations and is dimensionally stable. Therefore, many conventional machine tools are modernized and modified into CNC machine tools based on the seasoned old bodies of those machine tools. Nevertheless, CNC machine tools are also manufactured based on polymer concrete, which vibration damping ability is even better. On the other hand, attempts made in the past by leading machine tool manufacturers to use welded frames in CNC machine tools failed. The revival of interest in welded frames was spurred by economic considerations, as steel systems are much thinner compared to cast-iron ones. They are able to carry the same loads. The construction of CNC machine tools with a welded steel frame undertaken at the Institute of Mechanical Technologies (ITM) of the Czestochowa University of Technology is an attempt to solve this constructional problem. The machine tool frame was designed with use of CAD solid works system. The ultimate success of using the welded frame is determined not only by the frame itself, but also generally the design of the machine tool and its operation parameters. The welded frame was used for a high-accuracy three-axis milling machine. In this respect, it is equal of professional machine tools manufactured by reputed companies. It can be either a production machine tool or a test stand.

The marriage of computer, electronic technology and traditional machining disciplines has given birth to revolutionary new disciplines, Mechatronics. Therefore Mechatronics requires mechanical, electronic and computer knowledge together. The main aim of this article is to present the mechatronics approach for desk-top CNC milling machine design. Construction of computer controlled (CNC) Machine differs greatly from that of conventional machine tools. This difference arises from the requirement of higher performance levels. Machine Structure, guide ways, feed drives, spindle and spindle bearings, measuring systems, machine control unit, software and operator interface, gauging and tool monitoring should be considered as mechatronics approach. Servo motors, motor drivers and motor control unit were used in this CNC milling machine to make it flexible and easy programming. Ball screws were used to X-Y –Z axes to eliminate backlash of the slides. Non-contact home and Limit switches were used to prevent possible damages against over travels. Necessary torque and power have been calculated to select the motors by taking care of the load, ball screws, motor inertia and required cutting tools and etc. and developed CNC milling machine has been tested several times for reliable machining of machine parts.

In this paper, the problem of constructing geometric models from data provided by 3-D imaging sensors is addressed. Such techniques allow for rapid modeling of sculptured free-form shapes and generation of geometric models for existing parts. In order for a complete data set to be obtained, multiple images, each from a different viewpoint, have to be merged. A technique stemming from the Iterative Closest Point (ICP) method for estimating the relative transformations among the viewpoints is developed. Computational solutions are provided for estimating shape from noisy sensory measurements using representations that conform with commonly used representations from Computer Aided Geometric Design (CAGD). In particular, NURBS and triangular surface representations are applied in shape estimation. The surface approximations are refined by the algorithms to meet a user-defined tolerance value.

In this research, the authors have tried to decrease the weight of circular-digging large size bucket as far as possible with keeping the reliability of whole of the construction machine. In the case of main bucket, the authors have evaluated the strength reliability of this bucket and proposed more optimum design changing the thickness and kind of the material, though the expected weight reduction ratio becomes only 5% with increasing the rigidity of the main bucket. In the case of sub-bucket, it is desirable to change the thickness of the material and to attach the reinforcement in the both side. Therefore, the designer could reduce the weight by 11% with keeping the rigidity of the sub-bucket.

Handicraft of bamboo weaving has been a tradition that has been inherited for a long time, by using bamboo strips to weave into shapes to make tools and appliances. The bamboo strips are from dividing the longitudinal bamboo trunks into thin strips. In which most farmers will make the strips by hand by using a big knife or sharp objects. As a result, it takes a long time to prepare the bamboo strips to be used in the weaving work. There is also a risk of accidents from the use of sharp objects, including the size of the bamboo strips that is not the same size. This research aims to design and construct bamboo strips by dividing the research into 2 steps: 1) designing and constructing bamboo strips and 2) testing the operation of the stripping machine. The designed machine can be easily moved because it is a small and lightweight machine which is designed using a single-phase electric motor with a voltage of 220 volts, 250 watts, etc. Power to drive the roller through the transmission belt to convey bamboo parts through two 7-degree sets of blades with sharp angles that are placed horizontally. The first blade acts to separate the bamboo parts with the bamboo strips and the second blade acts to sharpen the bamboo strips. The results of the working test of the stripping machine by adjusting the blade angle at 1 and the level into 4 values that are 3, 4, 5, and 6 degrees, it was found that the machine was able to produce bamboo strips in size 1.47, 1.20, 1.97 and 2.27 mm, respectively. The size of the punching line is suitable for weaving containers such as round bamboo basket, wicker basket, and bamboo basket, etc.

Static and dynamic properties of machine tools have a decisive influence on their accuracy. In case of HSM machine tools, the phenomena associated with them are additionally strengthened by high machining parameters. In order to predict a machine tool behaviour at the design stage, it is necessary to use numerical methods to simulate for its simulation. Thanks to the use of this type of software, it is possible to perform the next step, i.e. the optimisation of the structure. In case of machine tools, due to the multiplicity of factors affecting its accuracy, this should be a multicriterial optimisation. This article presents the results of a vertical milling centre spindle body optimisation using the Finite Element Method. The results of static stiffness and vibration frequency analysis for three bodies (i.e. the body of the form and dimensions proposed by the constructor, the body after parametric optimisation and the body after the form and parametric optimisation including use of different materials) were compared. The optimisation tools available in the ANSYS system were used for the simulation. The calculations were preceded by experimental research and modifications of dynamic parameters performed on their basis using the author's methodology to determine the behaviour of a partially existing structure for different masses of the body being optimised.

Machine tool rams are important constructional elements found on vertical lathes as well as on many other machines. In most cases, a machine tool ram constitutes an assembly with significant dynamic compliance that affects the machine’s ability to achieve stable cutting conditions. There are various solutions for increasing a machine tool ram’s stiffness and damping. This paper describes an innovative concept of a two-axial electromagnetic actuator for controlled vibration dampers with high dynamic force values. The described solution is purposefully based on the use of standard electric drives. As a result, the size of the actuator is easier to scale to the required application. The solution is designed as a spacer between the end of the ram and the head. The paper presents the actuator concept, construction design, current control loop solution and experimental verification of the controlled vibration damper’s function on the test ram in detail. The presented position measurement concept will enable the use of non-contact position sensors for motor commutation as well as for possible use in vibration suppression control. Applications can be expected mainly in the field of vibration suppression of vertical rams of large machine tools.

Abstract: 3D modelling is an important technique for many studies and applications. Model data acquisition and modelling 3D modelling techniques have their own specialties in various research and application areas. This article systematically introduces the equipment of 3D modelling method. This document also introduces a 3D modelling application, including all model views created in Fusion 360. Fusion 360's direct modelling tools allow you to change modal geometry without having to edit the mid-levels of your model. You can seamlessly make design changes without causing modelling errors. The authors consider the construction of a roller assembly of Base cutting machine is demonstrated. The constructions are considered as applied to the Autodesk fusion 360 software. The paper is aimed at improving the graphic methods of machine design and improving the educational process when training the Bachelor’s degree students majoring in machine design. Finally, some major issues and some shortcomings are identified, and further challenges are predicted from various aspects such as modelling recovery, digitization methods, and dynamic modelling. Paper is focused on development of new patented construction of screw briquetting machine for compacting biomass into the solid biofuel. Developed machine design is based on achieved results of comprehensive research of the complicated process of biomass densification. Patented construction provides two main goals: the elimination of axial forces, which causes increasing of bearings lifetime, and a new modular design of pressing chamber and tools with geometry based on application of the mathematical model. Research of the biomass densification pointed to the need for modular design of densification machine, where it is possible to control all significant parameters of the densification process. The goal of this paper is to present a new patented design of screw press, which satisfies all requirements for modularity and control of the parameters. It allows optimizing this process for different types of raw materials and achieving high quality production. Results of experimental research of densification process then allow the engineering design of the production machine tailor-made to the customer, while being able to minimize investment, energy and operating costs. The developed design of screw press is unique in its modularity and high reliability.

Abstract In this paper the design and the magneto-static simulation of axial-flux permanent- magnet stepper motor with the disc type rotor is presented. Disk motors are particularly suitable for electrical vehicles, robots, valve control, pumps, centrifuges, fans, machine tools and manufacturing. The brushless machine with axial flux and permanent magnets, also called the disc-type machine, is an interesting alternative to its cylindrical radial flux counterpart due to the disk shape, compact construction and high torque density. This paper describes a design of four phase microstepping motor with the disc type rotor. The FEM modeling and the 3D magneto-static simulation of the disk stepper motor with permanent magnets is being subject of the article, too. Disc rotor type permanent magnet stepper motor for high torque to inertia ratio is ideal for robotics and CNC machines.

Cultivation tools have a long history of use. The integration of cultivation within current organic and conventional weed management programs is conditional on the availability of functional, practical cultivation tools. However, there are performance and operational limitations with current cultivation tools. Serviceable improvement in weed control is the impetus behind creation of new tool designs. The primary objective of this research was to design and construct two cultivators that might address the limitations of current cultivation tools. A secondary objective was to identify historical influences on the technology, availability, and capability of cultivation tools. Two new tractor-mounted cultivators were designed and constructed as loose extractions of antique handheld tools. The first tool, a block cultivator, has a flat surface in the front of the tool that rests against the soil and limits the entrance of a rear-mounted blade. The second tool resembles a stirrup hoe, where a horizontal steel blade with a beveled front edge slices through the upper layer of the soil. Block and stirrup cultivator units were mounted on a toolbar with a traditional S-tine sweep, so that the novel cultivators could be compared directly with a common standard. Relative to the S-tine sweep, the stirrup cultivator reduced weed survival by about one-third and the block cultivator reduced weed survival by greater than two-thirds. Of the three tools, block cultivator performance was least influenced by environmental and operational variances.

Safety is currently a widely discussed topic in the design and construction of machine tools. Similarly important is the area of functional safety. This article focuses on determining the mean time to dangerous failure and diagnostic coverage in safety function of machine tools. Legislative requirements (2006/42/EC [1]) and requirements of current standards (EN ISO 12100 [2], EN ISO 13849-1 [3], EN 62061 [4]) are discussed. The current state of calculating the mean time to dangerous failure and diagnostic coverage and the shortcomings of current approach is presented. A new methodology for determining of mean time to dangerous failure and diagnostic coverage is outlined.

Shallot peeling activities in small scale industry are still manually done. This process takes huge time and effort. Therefore, shallot dehuller was designed and developed to increase effectivity and efficiency. The objectives of the study were to develop shallot dehuller machine and conduct functional tests. Identification tests indicated workshop tools needed for machine development were grinder, rulers, scales, and various machines such as drilling, welding, roll and bender, and cutting plasma machine. Machine development started from manufacturing the frames, dehuller hopper and inlet, rotating disc, outlet for shallot hull, and outlet for shallot. Reliability-based design optimization considers the uncertainties that lie in the designing process of resilient buildings and structures. To model uncertainty, the major challenge is to lower the high computational expense incurred by the double-loop approach, where the design optimization (outer loop) repeatedly calls the reliability analysis of each structural design (inner loop). An alternative is to convert the reliability constraints to deterministic constraints by using optimality conditions. Yet, the approximated results are often inaccurate when constraint functions are highly non-linear, non-continuous, or non-differentiable. To achieve better accuracy while attaining sufficient flexibility, the present study proposes a new framework to classify the structural designs into feasible/infeasible designs. The proposed framework is called SOS-ASVM by integrating the symbiotic organism search (SOS) and the active-learning support vector machine (ASVM). ASVM is adopted as the surrogate model, while SOS is used to seek more representative samples to improve the classification accuracy of ASVM. The SOS-ASVM was validated by comparisons with popular classification tools: conventional support vector machine, artificial neural network, and Kriging model. Three practical engineering cases are used to demonstrate the performance of the SOS-ASVM: a cantilever beam, a bracket structure, and a 25-bar space truss. The comparison results confirm the superiority of the proposed framework to other tools.

Background: Many subway/metro tunnels were constructed using close face shield machines in coarse grain soils in last decades. Configurations of the shield cutterhead and cutting tools are critical in terms of cost and project duration. There are currently no recognized methodologies available for the configurations due to the various geological and technical influencing factors. Several aspects have been considered in many single case studies. Objective and Method: To aid a better understanding for the involved design and operational aspects in a system way, main physical and mechanical characteristics of the coarse grain soils encountered in China are briefly summarized; advantages and disadvantages of the spoke type and plate type cutterhead equipped with corresponding cutting tools are outlined; performances of the different shield cutterheads used in the typical subway construction cases are introduced. Results: Based on the jobsite experiences, discussed are the options with respect to design of the cutterhead and cutting tools in the coarse grain soils, including opening ratio of the cutterhead, configuration of the cutting tools, use of the single disc cutters with inserts, reasonable movement of shield machine, robust shield machines against wears and interventions for changing tools. Conclusion: According to the discussions, the rule-of-thumb suggestions are presented to provide references for later similar projects.

The article presents static stiffness investigation of a rather specific group of machine tools characterized by a unique construction type which are made for railway and shipbuilding industries. Machines of that type are rarely tested in terms of their static stiffness, so consequently the knowledge about their static stiffness properties is fairly limited. The investigation was conducted involving two methods, traditional (conventional) one and the other originally developed method using dynamically changeable signal (DDSS). The results obtained represented stiffness characteristics and stiffness indicators. The static stiffness tests of the machine tools presented in the article are very rare. Therefore, in this case, the knowledge base is very poor. Based on the results obtained, the machining accuracy can be predicted. In many cases, the obtained results are the only source of information needed to validate FEM calculation models, compare similar machines, verify and optimize the stiffness of the structure at the design stage. In addition, due to the lack of appropriate standards for conducting this type of research, the presented unique procedures are helpful for subsequent researchers of this issue.

Digitalization brings challenges and new opportunities to the development of landscape gardening, “smart gardening,” which is a product of landscape gardening in response to the development of the digital era. Based on the multimodal intelligent computing method and deep neural network machine learning algorithm, this paper adopts “digital landscape design logic” to analyze and research smart gardens and digital design. The digital landscape design process and methods are discussed based on design logic, design basis, environment analysis, and results presentation, and the greenery maintenance scheduling system is constructed. The paper focuses on the digital implementation of the environmental analysis of the site and uses Rhino software and Grasshopper visual programming language to build parametric logic, establish parametric analysis models, and conduct a comprehensive analysis of the current environment. The main theme of the whole paper is a logical approach to digital landscape design for smart gardens, using digital technology tools from the perspective of smart garden thinking, combining quantitative analysis and qualitative design, and intervening in digital landscape garden planning and design to explore the application of digital technology and tools.

Nowadays the main stream of current automatic process and assembly is on intermittent transportation. Robot control systems can be divided into motion control and force control depending on the work. Assembly work is necessary to consider the state of force applied by detection of the force or moment on the fingers of the gripper. In this project, four groups designed and developed each one of the stages of the workpieces until the final piece was delivered; it was composed of three different workpieces. The mechanism was designed to set the shaft and fasten the screw into a vacancy in a workpiece. The machine was constructed with frame, base plate, support, gripper and workpieces by using CNC milling, turning, drilling and wirecut machine. This paper briefly describes the design analysis of a conveyor, actuator and motor control system.

Introduction. The problem of effective construction cost management can arise at any stage of a construction project, and it becomes particularly relevant amid economic instability. Solving problems of accurate assessment and control of construction costs is vital for all participants in the investment and construction process. The construction cost management process encompasses the following interrelated sub-processes: identification of reliable construction costs at stages of preliminary and working design; construction cost control at further stages, including the drafting of working design documentation and facility construction. The subject of research is a set of practical tools that solve construction cost management problems throughout the lifecycle of a construction facility. Materials and methods. Data on cost analysis processes, methods and tools were collected, systematized and analyzed in the course of the study. A systematic approach, analysis and synthesis methods, expert and comparative assessment methods were applied. Results. The main principles, underlying the author’s approach, as well as a set of practical tools designed to manage the cost of construction of a capital construction facility were proposed in reliance on the analysis, conducted by the author. Conclusions. The author proposes construction cost management methods and practical tools that can be applied in the course of implementation of investment and construction projects that have different degrees of complexity. This study has developed Micro Punch CNC Machine design by optimizing the function of the actuator axis implemented to make an implant plate. This research aimed to plan the simulation of CNC machine construction strength using the blanking operation application. Finite element method (FEM) was used to analyze the material strength. The research results showed that the maximum stress occurring at the punch tools was 428.17 MPa with the thickness of 0.6 mm and the maximum thickness of workpiece allowed in making the implant plate was 1.4 mm with the maximum stress of 999.09 MPa. The obtained data indicate that the most effective material to be used as the material construction in CNC micro blanking machine is St42. This case is proven by the result of the power to resist the stress and the value of maximum deformation from the comparison of both materials.

The cooperative virtual environment uses distributed virtual reality technology as to build a platform that sharing status data and meeting human-computer interaction. Through analyzing the container’s operating process and combing the typical characteristics of handling machine, this paper proposed a new novel method for container terminal machine cooperation and mutual interaction of each cooperative unit in the virtual environment, so it can present the imbalanced state of production system in the operation process directly and help to make fast decisions.

The design of machine construction is one of the subjects that often becomes a stumbling block for students of the Mechanical Engineering Education Study Program to graduate on time. Many factors cause it, including the weakness of students using STEM content in designing machine construction and the lack of contextual learning strategies for STEM-loaded courses with machine construction design tasks. This qualitative study aims to (1) identify the STEM content of the Scientific and Expertise Subject group, (2) describe the pattern of integrating STEM content in the formal and instructional curriculum, and (3) describe the learning pattern of the STEM content course. Research data were collected through document analysis, semi-open questionnaires, and FGD. The results showed (1) identified 15 scientific and skill courses containing STEM content that supported the work on machine construction design tasks, (2) integration of STEM-loaded courses in the formal curriculum was carried out by structuring their presentation before or at the same time as the presentation of the Mechanical Construction Design Course, being in the instructional curriculum is carried out by integrating learning experiences related to the design of machine construction in Lecture Event Unit, and (3) the learning pattern of courses containing STEM content should be carried out using a problem-based learning model where the problems are directly related to and or taken from machine construction design tasks.

The construction industry is prone to major safety hazards owing to the complex and onsite nature of construction projects. Hence, construction researchers have been pursuing concepts, methods, and tools using advancing technologies to improve construction safety management. Subsequently, the rapid digitization of construction work practices is providing opportunities to improve construction safety. Research has revealed that construction safety management practices can benefit from the applications of virtual design construction technologies (VDC), such as building information modeling (BIM), virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), geographic information systems (GIS), and gaming technology. This study comprehensively reviews 191 research articles, published between 2010 and 2019, focusing on providing an overview of the implementation and application of VDC technologies for improving construction safety. The objective of this review is to critically collect and analyze applications of VDC technologies and present a holistic view of the features and functions of VDC technologies that can impact jobsite safety improvement in the construction industry. The review showed that VDC technologies can substantially improve construction safety. Emerging digital technologies, such as BIM, VR, AR, GIS, and gaming technologies can transform the traditional document-oriented safety procedures into digitalized safety practices allowing safety managers to visualize and analysis construction sites virtually to devise proactive safety measures and effective safety trainings. This study also highlights challenges such as research gaps regarding these digital tools that are currently impeding their widespread use in construction safety.

Construction projects are usually designed by different professional teams, where design clashes may inevitably occur. With the clash detection tools provided by Building Information Modeling (BIM) software, these clashes can be discovered at an early stage. However, the number of clashes detected by BIM software is often huge. The literature states that the majority of those clashes are found to be irrelevant, i.e., harmless to the building and its construction. How to filter out these irrelevant clashes from the detection report is one of the issues to be resolved urgently in the construction industry. This study develops a method that automatically screens for irrelevant clashes by combining the two techniques of rule-based reasoning and supervised machine learning. First, we acquire experts’ knowledge through interviews to compile rules for the preliminary classification of clash types. Subsequently, the results of the initial classification inferred by the rules are added into the training dataset to improve the predictive performance of the classifiers implemented by supervised machine learning. The average predictive performance obtained by using the hybrid method is up to 0.96, which has been improved from the traditional machine learning process only using individual or ensemble learning classifiers by 6%–17%.
