For many years, Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples had a long history of contact with the regions to the north of Australia. This preceded European contact by many years and led to fruitful dialogue and levels of social cohesion between Muslims from the Macassan and Malay region and the Indigenous people of Arnhem Land and beyond. The area of contact was widespread, encompassing around 3,000 km of Australia’s northern coastline. Initial contact was most likely with the people known as the Baijini, referred to as “followers of Allah”, followed by the Macassans. This article has two fundamental arguments concerning the nature and level of dialogue between Muslims and Indigenous Australians prior to the 20th Century. Firstly, there are established links that dialogue occurred in this era, as is evident by the linguistic traces, syncretic absorption of rituals and beliefs and the transference of technology. Secondly, whilst the primary objective of the interaction and dialogue was trade focussed, some of the Baijini and Macassans used this contact and trade as a vehicle for the purpose of da’wah (proselytizing or invitation to Islam, The syncretic nature of this dialogue has left a lasting legacy with many Indigenous peoples in Arnhem Land, including ceremonies and rituals reflecting certain concepts or ideas from Islam and other Macassan beliefs. Ultimately, this long term dialogue declined following the banning of the Macassan trepang fleets in 1906, however, the legacy remains to this day.

This paper examines the ‘Malay’ community in pre-war Darwin, focusing on those men who were brought to Australia to work in the pearling industry. It considers their status within the community, and questions the degree to which the White Australia policy impinged upon their lives. The tenn ‘Malay’ in this context does not refer to the ‘Malays’ of present-day Malaysia, but rather to the ambiguous colonial construction which was loosely based on notions of ‘racial’ grouping. Adrian Vickers’ study of South-East Asian ‘Malay’ identity points to its multiple forms: the colonial constructions of the British and the Dutch; the existence of non-Muslim Malays; and the many ethnic groups whose identities cut across the national boundaries which form present-day Malaysia and Indonesia and the southern Philippines. In the Australian context, the works of John Mulvaney and Campbell Macknight have examined Macassan contact with northern Aboriginal groups, particularly in the Gulf of Carpentaria. According to Mulvaney, the term ‘Macassan’ was used to refer to the Bugis and Macassan seafarers who came to Australia from southern Sulawesi. He notes, however, that nineteenth-century Europeans, such as French commander Baudin and Matthew Flinders referred to them as ‘Malays’.

Abstract In the famous Djuranydjura story from North-East Arnhem Land, when the visiting ‘Macassan’ offers the Yolŋu ancestral dog rice, shoes and blankets, he rejects them all, in favour of his own land and resources. At Gäwa homeland on Elcho Island, this powerful story is reinterpreted to include the arrival of balanda (white) teachers, and their focus on English literacy. However, it is not that English literacy is devalued, but that it must maintain its proper place; negotiated to sit alongside the foundational literacy of the land, and Warramiri language itself. An approach of applying such a ‘Bothways’ pedagogy through utilising the ‘Accelerated Literacy’ methodology for both languages and cultures is outlined to demonstrate that strengthened identity is attainable when the community moves together.

Makasar is an Austronesian language belonging to the South Sulawesi subgroup within the large Western-Malayo Polynesian family. It is spoken by about two million people in the province of South Sulawesi in Indonesia, and is the second largest language on the island of Sulawesi (behind Bugis, with about three million speakers). The phonology is notable for the large number of geminate and pre-glottalised consonant sequences, while the morphology is characterised by highly productive affixation and pervasive encliticisation of pronominal and aspectual elements. The language has a literary tradition including detailed local histories (Cummings 2002), and over the centuries has been represented orthographically in many ways: with two indigenous Indic or aksara-based scripts, a system based on Arabic script, and a variety of Romanised conventions. From at least the early 18th century Macassan sailors travelled regularly to northern Australia to collect and process trepang or sea cucumber (Macknight 1976), and many loanwords passed into Aboriginal languages of the northern part of Australia (Evans 1992, 1997).

Vegetation patterning is described for two neighbouring continental island chains off Arnhem Land, Australia. A total of 684 species was recorded from 57 islands, with reasonably comprehensive lists for 36 of these islands. Almost 90% of the deviance in plant species richness was associated with island size. The richness of plants dispersed by sea and/or vertebrates was proportionally greater on small islands; that of relatively poor dispersers was greater on larger islands. Twelve vegetation communities were defined by classification of plant species composition in 226 50 × 50-m quadrats. There was no relationship between island size and species richness at the quadrat level, at least for the most extensive vegetation types. The vegetation of the islands is now composed of two main elements—an original set of communities (mostly of heath, tussock grassland and eucalypt open forest) whose species have poor inter-island dispersal, and a set of more recent colonists (mostly of strand, mangrove and coastal thicket communities). The former group is allied to the sandstone flora of western Arnhem Land, but is species-poor in comparison, as the islands lack the deep gorges which drive much of the species richness of western Arnhem Land. The latter group comprises many species with a broad geographic range across tropical coastal areas, including many species which have been shown elsewhere to be highly vagile. Many species of the former set appear to have been lost from the smaller islands. The island flora has been influenced by three sets of human managers. Aboriginal use of the islands has been long-standing and probably resulted in a fire regime which may have accentuated environmental patchiness. Centuries of wet-season use of some islands by Macassan trepang-harvesters, ending early this century, has apparently left few effects other than the persistence of occasional small populations of an introduced food tree. In contrast, European use of these islands has been minimal and fleeting, but is associated with the introduction of most weeds.

Este trabalho objetivou avaliar os atributos de emergência e crescimento do feijão macassar irrigado com águas salinas em resposta à inoculação das sementes com Bradyrhizobium sp. e adição de biofertilizante suíno como alternativa de atenuação do estresse salino das plantas. O delineamento experimental foi utilizado em blocos casualizados, com cinco repetições, em arranjo fatorial 5 x 2 x 2, correspondente a cinco níveis de salinidade hídrica (0,5; 2,0; 3,5; 5,0 e 6,5 dS m-1), no solo com e sem biofertilizante suíno, e com sementes com e sem inoculação. Foram avaliados o porcentual de emergência, o tempo médio de emergência, o índice de velocidade de emergência das sementes, as taxas de crescimento absoluto e relativo em fitomassa fresca epígea, a área foliar, fitomassas seca da raiz, do caule e das folhas e partições de biomassas radiculares, caulinares e foliares. O estresse salino potencializa prejuízos no porcentual de emergência, no tempo médio e no índice de velocidade de emergência das sementes de feijão macassar. O biofertilizante suíno aplicado em fundação eleva e a inoculação reduz o tempo médio de emergência do feijão macassar. O uso concomitante de águas salinas, de biofertilizante suíno e da inoculação com Bradyrhizobium não influencia os atributos de emergência de sementes de feijão macassar, porém mitigam o estresse salino nos atributos de crescimento das plantas.

Introduction: Paraquat exposure causes aging because it induces oxidative stress marked by decreased level of SOD and increased MDA serum level. Macassar fruit contains bioactive compounds such as vitamin C, flavonoids, tannins and polyphenol that have antioxidant activity. The purpose of this study was to prove that Macassar fruit extract increased the level of Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) enzyme and reduce the level of Malodialdehid (MDA) in male Swiss Webster mice treated by paraquat. Methods: A randomized pretest-posttest control group study was conducted using 14 male mice which were 2-3 months old, healthy and had 25-30 gram in weight. They divided into 2 groups namely P0 (control) and P1 (Treatment). Both groups were treated by paraquat but only group P1 received 20 mg Macassar fruit extract while the P0 only got 1 cc placebo for 14 days. Results: Our result showed that the level of SOD was increased in P1 group from 17.18±1.69 U/ml to 67.56±3.65 U/ml (p<0.01) while no change was observed in P0 group 16.97 ±1.45U/ml to 17.07±1.89 U/ml (p>0.05). However, no effect on MDA level was observed as the level of MDA tended to slightly decrease in both groups. Conclusion: It can be concluded that Macassar fruit extract 20 mg/kgBB significantly increased the level of SOD whilehave no effect on MDA level in male mice Swiss Webster treated by paraquat.

A combinação eficiente entre variedades e estirpes de rizóbio é importante para aumentar a produtividade do feijão macassar; entretanto, estirpes selecionadas não foram testadas com a maioria das variedades cultivadas na região semiárida do Nordeste do Brasil. Com o objetivo de avaliar a eficiência de quatro estirpes recomendadas de rizóbio em seis variedades de feijão macassar cultivadas no Agreste da Paraíba, conduziu-se um experimento fatorial em blocos casualizados com três repetições, em vasos de Leonard contendo substrato estéril. As variedades IPA 206, Sedinha, Corujinha, Canapu, Sempre Verde e Azul, receberam inoculação com as estirpes BR 3267, BR 2001, EI 6 e NFB 700, além dos tratamentos com e sem fertilização nitrogenada. As plantas foram colhidas 40 dias após o plantio. As estirpes BR 3267 e BR 2001 produziram os melhores resultados quanto a biomassa, teores e conteúdos de N na planta e número de nódulos. A inoculação com a EI 6 resultou em um desempenho fraco, especialmente com a variedade IPA 206. O desempenho da estirpe NFB 700 foi um pouco melhor que o da EI 6. Sedinha e Sempre Verde foram as melhores variedades em produtividade de biomassa, conteúdo de N e número de nódulos.

The biological resistance of 21 tropical wood species against bacteria and molds was studied. The gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus and the gram-negative bacterium Escherichia coli had none or negligible activity on surfaces of zebrano and maçaranduba (up to 1 ×106 CFU/mL), and they had negligible or medium activity on surfaces of macassar ebony, ovengol, santos rosewood, and iroko (from 1 ×106 up to 1 ×107 CFU/mL). These bacteria had high activity on surfaces of okoumé, tineo, doussié, makoré, and both reference woods, beech and Scots pine (usually over 1 ×107 CFU/mL). The mold growth activity (MGA) of Aspergillus niger and Penicillium brevicompactum was minimal on surfaces of ipé, yellow balau, macassar ebony, doussié, bubinga, and merbau, but it was strong on surfaces of okoumé, cerejeira, ovengol, wengé, sapelli, and both reference woods. When comparing individual biological tests of (a) bacterial and mold but also (b) bacterial, mold and rot with decaying fungi C. puteana and T. versicolor, no significant relationships were found. These results confirm that the bio-durability of woods is influenced not only by their molecular structure, but also by the attacking biological pest group.

Background. Macassar kernels (Rhus javanica L.) has potential as an antiaging agent as it has antielastase activity, especially its stem extract which has best percent inhibition compared to its leaves and fruit extract. Moreover, the antiaging agent can be commonly used in the form of gel for topical applications. Hence, formulation of HEC-based topical gel from the stem extract of Macassar kernels was conducted. This study aims to determine the antielastase activity of the stem extract of Macassar kernels and evaluate the skin elasticity of its topical gel formulation by conducting dermatological safety and skin antiaging efficacy test. Methods. The stem extract was in vitro tested for antielastase activity using a microplate reader. Then, a formulation of a topical gel containing Rhus javanica stem extract was made. Five stages of quality control, which consisted of an organoleptic test, homogeneity test, pH measurement, viscosity measurement, and physicochemical stability test, were conducted to ensure the quality of topical gel formulation. Last, clinical studies were conducted to evaluate the dermatological safety and antiaging efficacy of gel preparation containing stem extract of Rhus javanica. Results. The stem extract provided antielastase activity (IC50 = 245.68 μg/mL), and its polyphenol was valued at 23.28 ± 1.52 mg GAE/g). The gel containing 10% stem extract had better stability than the gel containing 5% stem extract. The dermatology safety test and efficacy test results indicated that the topical gel containing 10% Rhus javanica stem extract did not cause any skin irritation and significantly improved skin elasticity p < 0.05 . In the treatment group, the moisture parameter was significantly changed on day 14 p < 0.0001 , day 21 p < 0.0001 , and day 29 p < 0.0001 . The elasticity parameter was also changed significantly on day 14 p = 0.0485 , day 21 p = 0.0537 , and day 29 p = 0.0002 . Conclusion. The stem extract of Rhus javanica has potential antielastase activity. Em cálculos da quantidade de energia requerida em processos de secagem artificial de um produto agrícola, é necessário o conhecimento de uma expressão para a determinação do calor latente de vaporização (H) de água no produto. Normalmente, as expressões para H, encontradas na literatura, são dadas pelo calor latente de vaporização (h) de água livre multiplicado por funções que dependem apenas do teor de água do produto. Isso significa que a relação H/h, para um dado produto, só depende do teor de água, o que é uma simplificação, pois se sabe que tal relação depende também da temperatura. Neste artigo, é apresentada uma expressão para o cálculo de H para feijão macassar, variedade sempre-verde, levando em consideração a dependência de H/h com a temperatura. Para tal, foi desenvolvido e utilizado um programa computacional que ajusta, de forma automática, cerca de 500 funções contidas em sua biblioteca, com uma e duas variáveis independentes, a dados experimentais. O programa, que usa regressão não-linear, classifica as melhores funções ajustadas pelo critério do menor qui-quadrado reduzido. O conjunto de testes estatísticos realizados indica que a expressão apresentada neste artigo produz resultados mais precisos na determinação de H para feijão macassar que os de outras equações normalmente encontradas na literatura.

ABSTRACT Maize is an important cereal and it is widely consumed in the world, both as food for humans and animals. Nitrogen (N) is a nutrient required in large quantities by maize, but unfortunately, soils are limited in meeting this need. Nodulating legumes can serve as a source of Nitrogen, because they are symbiotically associated with bacteria capable of fixing atmospheric N. Another important source of this nutrient is cattle manure, which is widely used in agriculture. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of using legumes and cattle manure on the production as well as the microbial and biochemical quality of the soil used for maize cultivation. The experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design, in a sub-subdivided plot scheme [(2x4) +2], two leguminous plants (pigeon pea and macassar bean), four doses of cattle manure (0, 20, 40 and 60 t ha-1) and two controls; one with mineral fertilization and the other cultivated without the use of fertilizers. Treatment using a manure dose of 60t ha-1 and pigeon pea legume, recorded higher dry mass production per plant. The increase in manure doses was directly proportional to the length and weight of the cobs for the two legumes. The enzymatic activities were affected by the different doses and legumes, with greater results being recorded at the 60 t ha-1 dose with the macassar legume. The use of legumes with manure improved maize production as well as the microbiological and biochemical quality of soils.

Validation of analysis method of PAH have been done in marine sediment of Macassar Coast by Gas Chromatography (GC-FID). Validation of method include: limit of detection (LoD), limit of quantification (LoQ) and linearity range. The results of validation method of 7 types PAHs (Naphtalene, Acenaphtene, Penanthrene, Fluoranthene, Pyrene, Benzo (a) Anthracene and perylene) give a linearity range between 0.5 to 20 ppm with an average linearity approaches a value of 1. LoD for Naphtalene; Acenaphthene; Penanthrene; Fluoranthene; Pyrene; Benzo (a) Anthracene; and Perylene are 3.541; 0.208; 1,736; 1.737; 1,738; 12.124; and 2,128 ppm, respectively. LoQ for Naphtalene; Acenaphthene; Penanthrene; Fluoranthene; Pyrene; Benzo (a) Anthracene; and Perylene are 11,803; 0.695; 5.786; 5.786; 5.788; 5.794; 7.0796 and 7.092 ppm, respectively. RESUMO Avaliou-se a eficiência de produtos naturais e do produto químico fosfeto de alumínio, na qualidade fisiológica e sanitária das sementes de feijão macassar (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) variedade Cariri, no município de Solânea, PB, durante seis meses de armazenamento. Empregou-se o delineamento estatístico inteiramente casualizado, com arranjo fatorial 9 x 7, representado por nove tratamentos e sete períodos de armazenamento, com quatro repetições. A qualidade fisiológica das sementes foi avaliada no início e a cada 30 dias de armazenamento, através dos parâmetros: teor de umidade, índice de infestação, germinação e vigor (emergência em campo). Os resultados permitiram concluir que houve redução na qualidade fisiológica das sementes de feijão, ao longo do armazenamento; a casca de laranja-cravo e a pimenta- do-reino, moídas, foram os produtos que se revelaram mais eficazes no controle da infestação das sementes; apesar da redução na qualidade fisiológica das sementes armazenadas, a casca de laranja-cravo moída influenciou na melhoria da qualidade fisiológica das mesmas.

O algodoeiro (Gossypium hirsutum) é uma planta bem adaptada a regiões semiáridas, podendo ser cultivada com práticas comuns de base agroecológica. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida na Fazenda Agroecológica Dulinos no ano agrícola de 2018. Os ensaios foram conduzidos em delineamento de blocos ao acaso (DBC), no esquema fatorial 4x2, com 4 repetições, estabelecidos em oito tratamentos, constituídos de quatro arranjos populacionais (algodão + palma forrageira; algodão + feijão macassar; algodão + milho e algodão solteiro) na presença e ausência de adubação orgânica (esterco bovino). Objetivou-se avaliar a produtividade do algodão herbáceo BRS Aroeira, consorciado com diferentes culturas, na presença e ausência de esterco bovino. Foram avaliados o peso do capulho, caroço, pluma e pluma com caroço. No que diz respeito à produtividade de pluma e caroço, a palma é a espécie indicada para consorciar com o algodão herbáceo BRS Aroeira. A adubação orgânica eleva a produtividade Kg ha-1 do algodão herbáceo BRS Aroeira.

A new synonym of Deprea orinocensis from Ecuador, Iochroma suffruticosum is also proposed and lectotypified based on an examination of original type material.

Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp, pertence à família Fabaceae, conhecida popularmente por "feijão macassar", é uma cultura de importante destaque na economia nordestina. Este trabalho teve por objetivo estudar a biologia floral, identificar os visitantes que realizam a polinização e a influência dos mesmos na produção de suas sementes. Foram realizados estudos morfológicos da arquitetura floral, bem como da biologia floral. O comportamento dos visitantes foi observado entre 05h00min-10h00min. Para identificar a estratégia reprodutiva realizaram-se dois experimentos: A. com os tratamentos de autopolinização espontânea e polinização natural; e B. com autopolinização espontânea e polinização cruzada manual, realizando-se ainda, estudo biométrico das sementes e frutos. V. unguiculata apresenta flores zigomorfas, contém um estandarte, duas alas e uma quilha. A antese teve início às 04h30min-05h00min, entrando em senescência às 09h00min10h00min. As abelhas Xylocopa grisescens (71% das visitas) e Eulaema nigrita (21,3%), foram consideradas polinizadores efetivos. Não houve diferença significativa na produção de frutos e sementes. V. unguiculata é capaz de produzir sementes na ausência de polinizadores, porém, possui arquitetura floral que atrai visitantes, garantindo assim a variabilidade genética.

A produção agrícola brasileira excede a capacidade armazenadora, com isso a construção de silo se torna imprescindível. s características físicas e de fluxo do produto analisado é essencial no projeto de silo. Diante disto o presente trabalho tem como objetivo determinar as propriedades físicas e de fluxo de diferentes cultivares de feijão para dimensionamento de silos verticais. O experimento foi conduzido no Laboratório de Construções Rurais e Ambiência- LACRA da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande, no município de Campina Grande-PB, analisando os diferentes tipos de feijões: carioquinha (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), preto (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) e macassar (Vigna unguiculata). Foram aferidas as características físicas (teor de umidade, granulometria, densidade) e de fluxo (ângulo e efetivo ângulo de atrito interno, coesão média e ângulo de atrito existente entre o produto e diferentes materiais parede do silo), foram utilizados os seguintes materiais de parede: acrílico, aço liso, aço rugoso, alumínio, madeira, analisando a melhor opção. Concluiu-se que os produtos são classificados como grãos grossos, com fluxo livre, para inclinação da tremonha houve diferença numérica entre as paredes analisadas.

This research will show how external debt and also the level of FDI affect the GRDP of case studies in the Makassar region from 2009-2013. The theory of multiple linear regression analysis is applied in quantitative research methodology. Secondary data from the Makassar Central Bureau of Statistics is used as a data source. Information only regarding the amount of Indonesian loans, the total level of realization of FDI inflows by Indonesia, but also figures regarding the degree and total local national GRDP of Makassar City were all collected using straight literary elements using figures for the period 2009 to 2013 (5 years). The quantitative approach is indeed a technique used to assess the level of guiding decisions in one component having several other characteristics using the SPSS 25 application. Thus, producing an initial model that shows a positive and beneficial effect of the independent variables external debt and FDI is relevant to the dependent variable of City GRDP Macassar. This shows that it is important to increase these two variables because the GRDP level of Makassar city will also increase.
