This study is devoted to the investigation of Azygia (Digenea: Azygiidae) species diversity using classical morphological, recent molecular tools (28S rRNA and cox1 mtDNA for genetic-based inference) and robust statistical techniques (Principal component analysis, PCA). The analysis revealed that the genus Azygia included four valid species: A. lucii, A. longa, A. hwangtsiyui, and A. sibirica n. sp. The distribution of the type species A. lucii was confirmed in the largest Russian rivers: the Volga and the Ob. The worms isolated from Perccottus glenii were determined as the Chinese species A. hwangtsiyui, according to the genetic data for the cox1 mtDNA gene, at 1.32–1.56%. The new species, Azygia sibirica n. sp, was described from Esox lucius in the Ob River and differentiated from the type species A. lucii by the smaller ovary, testes and prostatic sac, wider body, very narrow pharyngeal lumen and form of anterior margin of ovary. In addition, multivariate analysis and three methods for species delimitation (ABGD, GMYC, bPTP) showed the subdivision of A. lucii and A. sibirica n. sp. into two separate groups, one from the Volga River and another from the Ob River, respectively. To conclude, A. lucii infects Esox lucius in the western (European part of Russia, the Volga River basin), and northern (Western Siberia, the Ob River basin) parts of Russia; A. sibirica n. sp. has also been found to infect Esox lucius in the Ob River, while A. hwangtsiyui infects Perccottus glenii in the South of the Russian Far East (the Artymovka River basin).

On the basis of trophic behavior, fish are classified as herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, or detritivores. Epithelial mucous cells secrete mucin types specific to diet and digestive function. Mucus secretion is regulated mainly by molecular modulators produced by epithelial endocrine cells in response to luminal or tissue stimuli. These modulators are involved in control of food intake and digestive functions. Immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence studies were conducted on 10 adult northern pike (Esox lucius Linnaeus, 1758) from Lake Piediluco (Central Italy) to quantify distribution of sub-types of mucous and endocrine cells in alimentary mucosal epithelium. Neutral mucins predominated in the esophagus, and mixed and acidic mucins predominated in stomach and intestine. The gastric epithelium contained endocrine cells secreting somatostatin, tyrosine hydroxylase, and substance P. Mucous cells secreting neutral mucins increased in number from proximal to distal intestine, with endocrine cells containing substance P in the proximal intestine and those containing Leu-enkephalin throughout the intestine. Lectin histochemistry of gut sections revealed an abundance of N-acetyl-glucosamine and N-acetyl-galactosamine as carbohydrate residues on the mucin chain. The quantity and content of endocrine and mucous cells in the alimentary canal of E. lucius showed a direct relationship with its diet.

We compared vulnerability among tiger muskellunge (Esox masquinongy × E. lucius) (TM), northern pike (E. lucius) (NP), and muskellunge (E. masquinongy) (M) to predation by largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). Equal numbers (about 25/ha) and sizes (either 145, 180, or 205 mm) of each esocid taxa were stocked into three reservoirs (40–89 ha) during 3 yr (five stockings total). Tiger muskellunge were significantly more susceptible to predation ([Formula: see text], range 1–53% mortality) than muskellunge ([Formula: see text], range 2–26%); northern pike were intermediate in susceptibility ([Formula: see text], range 2–35%). Esocid size influenced predation rates for all taxa; losses to predation by largemouth bass decreased from an average of 31% at 145 mm to 2% at 205 mm. Pond experiments (N = 7) provided results similar to reservoirs: TM>NP>M. In laboratory pools with simulated vegetation (N = 106 experiments), susceptibility to predation among esocids did not differ. Dispersal rates by esocids were similar in reservoirs and all taxa preferred vegetated habitats. However, differential habitat selection may partially explain why tiger muskellunge are more vulnerable to largemouth bass predation, as they spent more time in open than vegetated habitats in both pond and pool experiments than either of the parent species. For all taxa, stocking lengths [Formula: see text] in fall will increase survival by reducing predatory losses.

This study aims to assess the degree of metal contamination (mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb)) in the muscles of five species of fish Esox lucius, Sander lucioperca, Micropterus salmoides, Lepomis macrochirus, and Scardinius erythrophthalmus, from the Mechraâ-Hammadi Dam between July 2017 and May 2018, and to conduct a risk assessment for human consumers. Trace metals were determined by Graphite Furnace Atomic Absorption Spectrometry for the Pb and the Cd and by Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectrometry for the Hg. The results gotten from the study of the muscles of the different fish species show that the higher mean amounts of Cd and Hg were determined in E. lucius, and the maximum mean levels of Pb were detected in S. erythrophthalmus. Results suggested that demersal fishes inhabiting near the sediments and piscivorous fishes with higher trophic level were likely to accumulate higher trace metal concentrations. The general order of bioaccumulation of the trace metals measured in the muscles of the fish species is as follows: Hg > Pb > Cd. Therefore, the bioaccumulation of Hg in fish studied is more important than that of Cd and Pb. Furthermore, these concentrations are higher in summer than in winter for all trace metals. All the values of the trace metals in the muscle tissues are below the maximum limits recommended by the European Community (EC) N° 1881/2006. However, estimation of noncarcinogenic health risks by the target hazard quotient indicated no obvious noncarcinogenic risks to humans that consume those fishes (THQ < 1). Results of THQ and maximum safe consumption indicated that Hg may cause more harm to human by fish consumption especially for E. lucius and S. lucioperca. Therefore, reduced intake of carnivorous fishes should be promoted as part of a healthier diet.

Abstract The aim of the study was to determine the impact pike fishing season (before spawning in fall (group A) and after spawning in spring (group B)) had on the slaughter yield and fillet fatty acid profile. The slaughter yield of fillets with skin and skinned fillets from the group B fish was significantly lower (by approximately 7.5% of body weight). The fatty acid profile of the fish meat from the groups examined differed significantly. The fillets of pike caught before spawning were dominated by unsaturated fatty acids (UFA), while those from fish caught after spawning had mainly saturated fatty acids (SFA). The share of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in the fillets of fish that had spawned was sixfold lower, and the n-3 PUFA differences were nearly ninefold. The content of eicosapentaenoic (EPA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) fatty acids in fillets of fish that had spawned was ninefold lower than in those that had not yet done so. Consequently, the ratio of n-3 PUFA/n-6 PUFA in pike from group A was over three times higher than that in the fish that had spawned (2.61 vs 0.82). Fillets from pike that have spawned are a significantly poorer source of valuable fatty acids for consumers.

In this paper, four new honorific inscriptions from Aizanoi are presented. All of the inscriptions have been found in Çavdarhisar during the excavation seasons of 2021 and 2022 and excluding n. 2, the stones are rectangular bomos-type statue bases. Inscriptions are dated to the Roman Imperial Period. N.1 is the honorary inscription of Lucius Claudius Lepidus who was the life-long high priest of the emperor in the reign of Commodus. He was the chief priest of Asia and the neokoros of the temples in Smyrna. The inscription was erected by the phyle Asklepias, the name of which first came into light due to the excavations in the theater in 2020. N. 2 is a honorific inscription of a chreophylakes whose name is unfortunately missing. Chreophylakia was a prominent public office in Aizanoi, as seen in the honorific inscriptions of the city’s elite citizens. N. 3 and n. 4 are rectangular bomos-type statue bases. Both of them are honours of the “πατρίς”. Although ἡ πατρὶς occurs frequently in the inscriptions of Aizanoi, it was in the nominative case in only two published examples. N. 3 belongs to Philiskos, son of Philiskos, the ephebos. Finally, n. 4 is the statue base of Neikostratos, son of Dionysios, the stephanephoros, honoured by his fatherland.

In this study, the quality (sensory evaluation, microbial enumerate, color, tvb-n (total volatile basic nitrogen), tca-soluble peptide (trichloroacetic acid-soluble peptide), muscle glucose, lactate, total sugar, Bas (Biogenic amines), VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and the microbial dynamic structure in samples stored at 4 °C were evaluated, and the relationship between VOCs and the diversity structure of microorganisms was also discussed. It was determined by sensory evaluation that the shelf life of samples was around 8 days. Protein and sugar were detected in large quantities by microorganisms in the later stage. At the same time, this also caused a large amount of Bas (biogenic amines) (tyramine, cadaverine, and putrescine). According to high-throughput amplicon sequencing, the initial microbiota of samples was mainly composed of Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter, Planifilum, Vagococcus, Hafnia, Mycobacterium, Thauera, and Yersinia. Among them, Pseudomonas was the most advantageous taxon of samples at the end of the shelf life. The minor fraction of the microbial consortium consisting of Vagococcus, Acinetobacter and Myroides was detected. The substances 3-methyl-1-butanol, ethyl acetate, and acetone were the main volatile components. The glucose, lactic acid, and total sugar were negatively correlated with Yersinia, Hafnia-Obesumbacterium, Thauera, Mycobacterium, and Planifilum; the proportion of these microorganisms was relatively high in the early stage. TVB-N and TCA-soluble peptides were positively correlated with Pseudomonas, Shewanella, Brochothrix, Vagococcus, Myroides, and Acinetobacter, and these microorganisms increased greatly in the later stage. The substance 3-methyl-1-butanol was positively correlated with Pseudomonas and negatively correlated with Mycobacterium. Ethyl acetate was associated with Hafnia-Obesumbacterium, Thauera, and Yersinia. Acetone was positively correlated with Acinetobacter.

We measured total Hg and stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) in northern pike (Esox lucius) from 19 Boreal Shield lakes with undisturbed, logged, or burned watersheds. Average Hg level in standard 560-mm northern pike, on a dry weight basis, was significantly higher in logged lakes (3.4 µg·g-1) than in reference lakes (1.9 µg·g-1). Average Hg concentrations in burned lakes (3.0 µg·g -1) did not differ significantly from those in logged and references lakes. Concentrations of Hg normalized to trophic position determined from isotopic composition yielded similar results. Mercury levels were above the WHO safe consumption limit in all logged lakes. Mercury in northern pike was correlated with methyl mercury in zooplankton (+), total N (+), pH (-), alkalinity (-), sulfate (+), dissolved organic C loading (+), and light attenuation in lake water (+). Stepwise multiple regressions explained 79% of the variability in Hg in fish and included methyl mercury in zooplankton, pH, and sulfate as independent variables. Explained variability increased to 92% when a second-order lake with an exceptionally large drainage area was excluded. Our results suggest that extensive logging activities may disrupt the natural cycling of Hg in watersheds and increase Hg levels in the aquatic biota.

A new Henneguya species, H. jaczoi sp. n., is described from perch (Perca fluviatilis) from Lake Balaton, Hungary. This species infects the palatal region of the fish, forming large plasmodia in the thickened caudal part of the buccal cavity and at the dorsal ends of the cartilaginous gill arches. The species differs from the gill-dwelling Henneguya species of perch and pike (Esox lucius) both morphologically and in molecular aspects. The authors conclude that the type species H. psorospermica Thélohan is a specific parasite of pike, while the species forming plasmodia in the gills of perch corresponds to H. texta Cohn, which was hitherto regarded as a synonym of H. psorospermica. Besides the above-mentioned species, H. creplini was frequently found in pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) and Volga pikeperch (Sander volgensis), but no Henneguya infection has been recorded in ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernua), which is a common percid fish of the lake and is known to be the type host species for H. creplini.

Celem pracy była ocena wpływu sezonu pozyskania wybranych gatunków ryb hodowanych w Polsce na profil kwasów tłuszczowych i wskaźniki żywieniowe lipidów ich mięsa. Badaniami objęto 4 gatunki ryb krajowej akwakultury: pstrąga tęczowego (Oncorhynchus mykiss), karpia (Cyprinus carpio), amura białego (Ctenopharyngodon idella) oraz szczupaka (Esox lucius). Ryby pozyskano z gospodarstw rybackich położonych w województwie lubelskim w dwóch sezonach: wiosenno-letnim i jesienno-zimowym. Analizowano skład chemiczny mięsa (zawartość: wody, związków mineralnych jako popiół, białka i tłuszczu), wartość kaloryczną, wskaźnik jakości żywieniowej (NQI), jak również profil kwasów tłuszczowych i ich proporcje oraz indeksy (aterogenny – AI, trombogenny – TI, saturacji – S/P, wartości odżywczej lipidów – NV oraz proporcję kwasów o działaniu hipo- i hipercholesterolemicznym – h/H). Niezależnie od sezonu pozyskania mięso badanych gatunków ryb stanowiło dobre źródło białka oraz było dobrze zbilansowane pod względem zawartości lipidów. Wyjątek stanowiła tkanka mięśniowa szczupaka, która była bardzo ubogim źródłem tłuszczu. W sezonie jesienno-zimowym mięso badanych gatunków ryb zawierało więcej kwasów tłuszczowych wielonienasyconych, w tym kwasów n-3 i n-3 LC-PUFA, w porównaniu z sezonem wiosenno-letnim. Mięso amura białego w sezonie jesienno-zimowym charakteryzowało się istotnie wyższą (korzystniejszą) proporcją kwasów tłuszczowych PUFA/SFA, n-3/n-6, n-3 LC-PUFA/n-6 LC-PUFA oraz wykazywało istotnie niższe właściwości aterogenne. Pod względem żywieniowym najkorzystniejsze wskaźniki, w tym najniższy poziom saturacji i najkorzystniejszą proporcję kwasów o działaniu hipo- i hipercholesterolemicznym oraz najsłabsze działanie atero- i trombogenne, wykazywało mięso pstrąga tęczowego w sezonie jesienno-zimowym.

This study investigated the role of oxidative stress in the mitochondrial apoptotic pathways and structural protein degradation of fish during postmortem storage by measuring oxidative stress levels, mitochondrial antioxidant enzyme activity, mitochondrial dysfunction, apoptotic factors, and structural protein degradation (n = 3). The results revealed that reactive oxygen species (ROS) increased gradually within the first 12 h and then decreased (p < 0.05) in mitochondria. Lipid peroxidation was increased, and superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase activities were decreased in mitochondria (p < 0.05). Furthermore, oxidative stress induced mitochondrial membrane opening, mitochondrial swelling, as well as the depolarization of mitochondrial potential. This led to an increase in the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria and caspase-3 activation. Ultimately, oxidative stress promoted small protein degradation (troponin-T and desmin) and induced myofibril susceptibility to proteolysis. These observations confirmed that oxidative stress mediated the activation of mitochondrial apoptotic factors-promoted protein degradation, initiating the deterioration of fish muscle through the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway.

We assayed the fatty acid composition of muscles of the northern pike Esox lucius Linnaeus, 1758 inhabiting the Gyda River, Siberia, Russia using gas-liquid chromatography. Of 43 fatty acids identified in the pike samples, 23 fatty acids accounted for 99.3% of the total content. The most abundant saturated fatty acids (SFA, 31.6%) were palmitic (C16:0, 20.0%) and stearic (C18:0, 7.3%) acids. Among monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA, 15.1%), oleic acid (C18:1n9, 10.2%) and palmitoleic acid (C16:1, 4.1%) demonstrated the highest levels. The most represented polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA, 53.3%) were arachidonic acid (C20:4n-6, 7.6%), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, C20:5n-3, 7.3%), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, C22:6n-3, 26.3%). The fatty acid profile of specimens from the Gyda River was different in comparison to profiles found in other pike populations, most likely due to different diets. Pike flesh has good nutrition quality in terms of a low n-6/n-3 ratio (0.36), low atherogenic (0.39), and thrombogenic (0.22) indices, and a high ratio of hypocholesterolemic to hypercholesterolemic fatty acids (2.83), and this species can be recommended as a replacement or alternative to other fish sources in traditional diets.

In May 1993 and 1994, northern pike (Esox lucius) were added to eutrophic Lake 227 and oligotrophic Lake 110 at the Experimental Lakes Area in northwestern Ontario. Both lakes were previously dominated by cyprinids, and northern pike additions significantly decreased cyprinid densities in both lakes. Food web relationships were determined pre- and post-manipulation using stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope analyses of zooplankton, benthic invertebrates, and fishes. In Lake 110, fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) shifted from a zooplanktivorous to a zoobenthivorous diet as indicated by a shift in isotopic composition to more depleted δ15N and enriched δ13C values after northern pike additions. It was not possible to direct predator-induced shifts in cyprinid diets in Lake 227. Concentrations of mercury and organochlorines (sum of polychlorinated biphenyls (ΣPCB), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (ΣDDT), and hexachlorocyclohexane (ΣHCH)) in these fish did not change markedly after northern pike introductions despite the shifts in diet for fathead minnow from Lake 110. However, concentrations of all contaminants were lower in biota from eutrophic Lake 227 when compared with Lake 110, which is consistent with previous studies. Our results indicate that nutrient availability, rather than short-term changes in food web structure, determined contaminant concentrations in fish and other biota from these lakes.

A vertical slot fishway and two Denil fishways (of 10 and 20% slope) built into a weir on the Lesser Slave River (55°18′N, 115°45′W) were studied from May 12 to June 25, 1984, to determine how effectively these designs pass north-temperate, nonsalmonid fishes. Thousands of spottail shiner (Notropis hudsonius), substantial numbers (> 100) of northern pike (Esox lucius), longnose sucker (Catostomus catostomus), white sucker (Catostomus commersoni), immature yellow perch (Perca flavescens), and lesser numbers of burbot (Lota lota), adult yellow perch, lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis), and trout-perch (Percopsis omiscomaycus) ascended the fishways. Walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) and goldeye (Hiodon alosoides), although probably moving extensively through the river, did not use the fishways. Although high water levels allowed most fish to surmount the weir, of those that chose the fishway, pike strongly preferred to ascend the Denil fishways and the two sucker species preferred to ascend the vertical slot. Therefore, a combination of several different fishways may be required for the most efficient passage of a wide variety of species. Plasma glucose and lactate measurements on pike revealed that ascending the Denil fishways was only moderately stressful for these fish.

Density-dependent mortality in young life stages should strongly limit the potential for additive effects caused by stocking of fish sizes that are smaller than size at recruitment into the fishery. Indeed, stocking models have suggested that stocking of fry should not elevate year class strength in self-sustaining stocks. However, limited data based on replicated and controlled experiments are available to support this prediction. We performed a pond experiment (N = 4 per treatment) to compare the stock enhancing outcome of stocking hatchery-reared northern pike (Esox lucius) fry and the natural production of young in self-recruiting pike populations. We also added a treatment where pike fry were stocked into ponds that otherwise did not have pike to mimic the absence of natural recruitment. Fry stocking into self-reproducing stocks did not elevate year class strength over unstocked controls. However, in the absence of competition, year class strength of juveniles in late summer emerging from fry stocking was similar to the production of natural recruits. Overall, we demonstrated the competitive disadvantage of hatchery-reared fry when released into waters already containing natural recruits, the partial replacement of natural recruits by hatchery-reared fry, and the lack of additive effects of stock enhancement in naturally reproducing stocks. A stock-enhancing effect of pike fry stocking may only be expected in the absence of natural recruitment.

The archaic epitaph of Lucius Cornelius Scipio (son of Barbatus), consul of 259 BC, contains the Old Latin form Tempestātēbus (in the dative), referring probably to two goddesses of weather (CIL I2 9). This theonym proves the existence in the Old Latin language of the dual formation *Tempestātē ‘two deities of weather’. The word aide, attested in the epitaph of Scipio, son of Barbatus, can be easily interpreted as a possible form of the dual number, namely *aideē (nom.-acc. du. f.) ‘a bipartite (two-sided) temple; a sacral building with two sanctuaries’. Livius Andronicus used some forms of the dual number in his Latin translation of Homer’s Odyssey, among others genū (nom.-acc. du. n.) ‘two knees’ (fr. 14), inque manū (acc. du. f.) ‘and to both hands’ (fr. 5). It is not known, however, whether the use of the dual number in Andronicus’ Odussia was consistent or optional. Naevius introduced some dual forms into the epic work of Bellum Punicum, e.g. hōc Samnītē ‘these two Samnites’ (fr. 36). It seems, however, that the poet did not do it consistently. The metrical and linguistic analysis of the preserved fragments does not give a definite answer as to whether the use of forms of the dual number was obligatory in Naevius’ work, or was the result of the free choice of the Roman poet. In some passages passed down through indirect tradition, it was easy to arrive at the secondary plurality of the old dual forms.

The fish complex of the tributaries of the Upper Tom’ river (Nizhnyaya Tykhta and Talda), were studied. The surveyed rivers flow through the territory of the western part of the Kuznetsk Alatau (Tardanovsky Uplands). Against the background of a high level of oxygen in both rivers, in terms of the volume of easily oxidized organic matter, the N. Tykhta River is more polluted than the Talda River. Four species inhabit in the Talda River and 7 species were registered in Nizhnyaya Tykhta. Watercourses are characterized by low levels of species richness and abundance of fish. An uneven distribution of fish in both rivers was revealed, which is associated with differences in the biotopic confinement of different species. Microbiotopes characteristic of different species act as refugia. The complex of alien includes crucian Carassius auratus, bleak Alburnus alburnus and verkhovka Leucaspius delineatus) and minnow Gobio gobio, dace Leuciscus leuciscus, siberian loach Cobitis melanoleuca, perch Perca fluviatilis and pike Esox lucius are representatives of native fauna. Despite the proximity of the rivers, the level of similarity of species composition is low, less than 30% (Jaccard index is 27.30). Species diversity according to the Shannon-Weaver index is 1.50 for the Nizhnyaya Tykhta River and 1.09 for the Talda River. The presence of alien species in the ichthyofauna of a more polluted river testifies to their higher adaptability to changing environment (shallowing, decrease in runoff, increase in the concentration of organic matter) compared to the populations of native species.

The effect of increasing fertilizer dosages on the yield of eight different maize hybrids (SY Ondina, NK Kansas, NK Lucius, NK Octet, NK Thermo, SY Flovita, SY Brillio, NX 47279) has been investigated in the crop-year of 2011. According to our results it can be stated that contrarily to the control treatment the application of different nutrient-levels has resulted a significant yield increment (2 000–5 800 kg ha-1).Based upon the results of this experiment we have drawn the conclusion that the nutrient level of 120 kg N+PK was the optimal for the investigated hybrids. The highest yield (14 475 kg ha-1–15 963 kg ha-1) of the hybrids with different genotypes has been produced in case of this fertilizer treatment. With the comparison of the control and the optimum-fertilizer treatments the yield-increasing effect of mineral fertilization and the different reaction of hybrids towards increasing fertilizer dosages have been proven. In case of the control treatments the best-yielding hybrids were NK Thermo (11 917 kg ha-1) and NX 47279 (11 617 kg ha-1). Contrarily on the optimal nutrient supply level the hybrids SY Brillio (15 876 kg ha-1) and NX 47279 (15 963 kg ha-1) have produced the highest yields. Summarizing, we can state that the hybrid NX 47279 has resulted stable and high yields in the fertilized treatments. Analysing the yield-increasing effect of 1 kg fertilizer active substance it was proven, that the hybrids SY Flovita (45.43 kg ha-1), SY Brillio (44.47 kg ha-1) and NX 47279 (42.33 kg ha-1) had a good reaction towards even lower nutrient supply levels as well. In case of the control treatment the average water utilization coefficient of the hybrids was significantly lower (35.2 kg mm-1), than in case of the optimal nutrient supply level (N120+PK) treatments (48.9 kg mm-1).Therefore the hybrid specific difference between the water utilization of genotypes could be revealed.

AbstractPrevious identifications in North America of Trichomalus perfectus (Walker, 1835) and Mesopolobus morys (Walker, 1848) (Chalcidoidea: Pteromalidae), the principal chalcid parasitoids of the cabbage seedpod weevil (Ceutorhynchus obstrictus Marsham, 1802) in Europe, are shown to be misidentifications of Trichomalus lucidus (Walker, 1835) and Mesopolobus (Xenocrepis) moryoidessp. nov., respectively. Necremnus duplicatus Gahan, 1941 (Chalcidoidea: Eulophidae) is synonymized formally under Necremnus tidius (Walker, 1839) syn. nov., confirming a previous, tentative synonymy. Both sexes of N. tidius, M. moryoides, and T. lucidus are illustrated and compared with those of similar species using macrophotography and scanning electron microphotography. Hypotheses are offered to explain why the principal chalcid parasitoids of the cabbage seedpod weevil differ between North America and Europe and how the three treated species came to be in North America.

Otolith microchemistry provides valuable information about the environmental history of individual fish, but few studies have considered the influence of population or stock on life history traits. This study used the Sr/Ca ratio as an index of habitat use of spinyhead croaker Collichthys lucidus from 2 different populations (northern and southern China populations), including lifetime otolith microchemistry profiles (n = 63 fish) and determinations of natal habitat selection (n = 352 fish). The otolith data revealed 3 life history patterns in C. lucidus: Pattern 1 individuals spent most of their lifetime (>95%) in mesohaline waters (Sr/Ca range: 3-7 mmol mol-1), particularly during early growth; Pattern 2 individuals migrated from hyperhaline waters (Sr/Ca ≥ 7 mmol mol-1) to mesohaline waters; and Pattern 3 individuals migrated from oligohaline waters (Sr/Ca < 3 mmol mol-1) to mesohaline waters. Pattern 2 and Pattern 3 were specific to the northern and southern China populations, respectively, and Pattern 1 was shared by the 2 populations. The otolith core Sr/Ca ratios showed that most C. lucidus selected mesohaline waters as their natal habitat (i.e. 90.6% of 352 total individuals); 12.5% (19 of 152) selected hyperhaline waters and fell within the northern China population, and 7% (14 of 200) selected oligohaline waters and fell within the southern China population. These results indicate that life history diversity exists in this species, as the pattern of habitat use largely differed between the northern and southern China populations. The overall findings highlight that the behavior of different populations should be considered when determining fish migration histories.

A rhetorical analysis of the five funerary poems in T.T. Cloete’s AlloiroopThis article works from the premise that these poems form part o f a tradition that can he traced back to the funerary poetry of the Dutch Renaissance and from there to the funeral orations of Classical times. After referring to the current revival of interest in rhetoric, attention is given to the role which rhetoric played in Renaissance poetics and the influence it had on the practice of writing funerary poetry. The funerary poems in Cloete's Allotroop are then analysed, making use of the Renaissance descriptions of and prescriptions for funerary poetry researched by S.F. Witstein in Funeraire poëzie in de Nederlandse Renaissance. These analyses prove that Cloete’s poems make use of the elements basic to the Renaissance funerary poem and the classical funeral oration namely praise (laus), mourning (luctus) and consolation (consolatio) and that the rhetorical terminology devised centuries ago can still be useful in the reading of these poems.

Procedures for in vitro establishment, rapid shoot proliferation, and ex vitro plantlet acclimatization of Cryptocoryne lucens de Witt were determined. Shoot cultures were established from surface-sterilized shoot tips cultured on Linsmaier and Skoog salts and vitamins medium (LS) solidified with 0.8% (w/v) agar and supplemented with 2.0 μm BA and 0.5 μm NAA. The effect of BA (0 to 20 μm) and 0.5 μm NAA on shoot multiplication from single-node and clustered triple-node shoot explants was determined after 35 days. The most efficient shoot proliferation (7.7 shoots/explant) occurred from single-node shoot explants cultured on LS + 20 μm BA and 0.5 μm NAA. Maximum plantlet establishment was achieved by direct sticking of triple-node (cluster) microcuttings in either soilless planting medium or polyurethane foam cubes. Production of highly branched salable plants from microcuttings was possible within 18 weeks. Chemical names used: N-(phenylmethyl) -1H-purin-6-amine (BA); 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA).

El presente artículo analiza la conformación de una subjetividad política antagonista a partir del 2011 en Chile. Para esto, se analizan tres aspectos considerados como claves: performance, memoria y compromiso político. Respecto a la performance se destaca el carácter novedoso de las manifestaciones callejeras en su impronta lúdica y no violenta. Sin embargo, tal novedad es contrastada con la raigambre que esta subjetividad tiene en la memoria de las luchas contra la dictadura y un compromiso político enraizado en las luchas históricas de la izquierda chilena del siglo XX. En este sentido se concluye, proponiendo la existencia de una subjetivación política antagonista híbrida, que contiene elementos de la coyuntura en la cual se encuentra, pero que también rescata elementos de la historicidad de luchas del país. A method based on capillary electrophoresis with electrochemical detection was developed for the determination of polyphenols inLycopus LucidusTurcz. Operated in a wall-jet configuration, a 300 μm diameter carbon-disk electrode was used as the working electrode. Under the optimum conditions, the targeted analytes, i.e. rutin, chlorogenic acid, apigenin, luteolin and quercetin were baseline separated within 25 min in a 60mmol/L borate buffer (pH 9.0). Notably, excellent linearity was obtained over three orders of magnitude with detection limits (S/N=3) ranging from 1×10-7g/mL to 1×10-6g/mL for all analytes.

Resumen ∙ El Colibrí Esmeralda Hondureño (Amazilia luciae) es la única ave endémica de Honduras. Esta especie en peligro habita valles intermontanos con bosques áridos espinosos, bosque semi‐deciduo o áreas abiertas con arbustos dispersos. Durante un año (agosto de 2014–julio de 2015) se llevaron a cabo búsquedas de nidos de Amazilia luciae. Se registraron 17 nidos los cuales fueron monitoreados. La mayoría de los nidos (N = 15) se encontraron entre enero y marzo. Los nidos tuvieron forma de copa y se registró el uso de nueve especies de plantas nativas como sustrato. El ciclo reproductivo, desde construcción hasta que los polluelos dejan el nido, fue de 42 días. Los nidos encontrados contenían 1–2 huevos o polluelos. Finalmente se documentaron 14 ocasiones de cuidado maternal hacia juveniles fuera del nido. Estos resultados ayudarán a guiar estudios futuros, así como informar a participantes de esfuerzos locales de conservación dirigidos a beneficiar esta especie.Abstract ∙ Notes on the nesting and maternal care of the Honduran Emerald (Amazilia luciae) in the Agalta Valley, Honduras The Honduran Emerald (Amazilia luciae) is the only endemic bird in Honduras. This endangered hummingbird inhabits intermontane valleys with arid thorn forests, semi‐deciduous forest or open habitat with dispersed shrubs. During one year (August 2014–July 2015) we conducted searches for Honduran Emerald nests. We found and monitored 17 nests. Most nests (N = 15) were found between January and March. Nests were cup‐shaped and nine native plant species were recorded as substrate. The nesting cycle, from nest construction to fledging, takes approximately 42 days. Nests contained 1–2 eggs or nestlings. We documented 14 occasions of maternal care towards juveniles outside of the nest. This study will help guide future studies as well as promote local conservation efforts.

Three new species of the genus Ananteris Thorell have been discovered in Brazil. Ananteris desiderio sp. n., Ananteris camacan sp. n. and Ananteris infuscata sp. n. are respectively described from specimens collected in the regions of São Desidério, Camacã, Rebio UNA and Jequié in the state of Bahia, and Grão Mogol and Novo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. New records are also proposed for Ananteris luciae Lourenço, Ananteris mauryi Lourenço and Ananteris franckei Lourenço. The number of known Ananteris species known in the scorpion fauna of Brazil is now raised to 24.

AbstractA revision of the species of Ectobius Stephens closely related to E. sylvestris (Poda) (= Sylvestris Group) is presented. The characters defining the Sylvestris Group are discussed, and it is pointed out that the group extensively conforms with a major part of the species belonging to the genus Phyllodromica Fieber. Evidence is provided that Ectobius and Phyllodromica are paraphyletic groups. Five species are recognized, viz. E. sylvestris, E. lucidus (Hagenbach) (= fernandesi Harz), E. brunneri Seoane, E. eckerleini Harz, and E. pyrenaícus, a species described as new from the Pyrenees. The species chopardi Fernandes, currently recognized in Phyllodromica, is also treated as it shows great similarity with E. pyrenaicus sp. n.

The range of most species of the genus Cotoneaster Medik. located in the mountainous regions of Asia.According to the latest report by Janette Fryer and Bertil Hylmo, the genus Cotoneaster is represented by 2 subgenuses,11 sections and 37 series. Cotoneasters of Siberian flora: C. commixtus, C. laxiflorus, C. lucidus, C. megalocarpus, C. multiflorus, C. popovii, C. tjulinae, C. uniflorus, C. yakuticus, located in 2 subgenuses, 4 sections, 4 series. Collection of speciesof the genus Cotoneaster in the Botanical Garden acad. A.V. Fomin was created according the method of genus complexesby F. N. Rusanov, starting from 1972. The source material was attracted both by the extraction of seeds from the catalogsof foreign and Russian botanical gardens, and by the collection of seeds and living material in places of natural growth.Two expeditions were carried out to the regions of Siberia. The first one – Yakutsk in 1982 (10.08 – 29.08) along the route Kiev – Novosibirsk – Irkutsk – Tomsk – Krasnoyarsk – Aldan – Irkutsk – Kiev. The second – Central Siberian in 1983(24.07 – 17.08) along the route: Kiev – Irkutsk – Davsha – Nizhne –Angarsk – Severo –Baikalsk – Ulan –Ude – Kyakhta –Irkutsk – Chita – Moscow – Kiev. Morphological descriptions of annual shoots leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds of three typesof Cotoneasters: C. laxiflorus, C. lucidus, C. neo-popovii, micrographs of endocarp of bones, columns are given. Abstract For a vast period of the human history, the whole universe has been perceived as creation. In a created cosmos people create following the example of divinity and “any creation has a model: the way in which gods created the Universe” (Eliade, Sacrul şi profanul 25). Lucian Blaga illustrated this fact in one of his poems in his unique manner: “Through all eras/ what a clod in torment!/ Under all spheres/ Everything begets” (Through all eras, t. n.). Creation is the wonderful constant of existence through aeons. This paper will analyse how the creator’s condition is unfolded in two dramatic texts which belong to different literary periods of Romanian literature: Meşterul Manole by Lucian Blaga and Meşterul Manole by Valeriu Anania.

Despite a century of research on obesity, metabolic disorders and their complications, including dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and fatty liver disease remain a serious global health problem. Lycopus lucidus Turcz (LT) is a traditional medicine used for its anti-inflammatory properties that has not been evaluated for its efficacy in improving obesity. In this study, mice were fed a normal diet (n = 10) or obesity was induced with a high-fat diet (HFD, n = 20, 60% kcal from fat) for 4 weeks. The HFD mice were then divided into two groups, one of which received LT supplementation with water extract for 13 weeks [HFD (n = 10) or HFD with LT water extract (n = 10, 1.5%)]. LT reduced body and adipose tissue weight by elevating energy expenditure by increasing fatty oxidation in epididymal white adipose tissue (eWAT) and muscle. LT ameliorated dyslipidemia and hepatic steatosis by restricting lipogenesis. Additionally, LT normalized the impaired glucose homeostasis by diet-induced obesity to improve pancreatic islet dysfunction with increasing hepatic major urinary protein expression. Moreover, LT attenuated the inflammation and collagen accumulation in the liver and eWAT. In conclusion, these results suggest that LT can treat obesity-related metabolic disorders such as adiposity, dyslipidemia, hepatic steatosis, insulin resistance, and inflammation.

The bioactive compounds from plant extract represent a potent alternative to combating the increasing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to synthetic drugs. This study aimed to investigate the phytochemical, and antibacterial activities of Morinda lucida. Leaves of M. lucida was extracted successively using n-hexane, acetone, methanol and distilled water. The crude plant extracts were evaluated for their antibacterial activity against pathogens found in food and other sources such as Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella spp. using the agar well diffusion technique. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was carried out using the microbroth dilution technique. The phytochemical analysis showed the presence of alkaloids and sterols in all extracts. Flavonoid was only present in the n-Hexane extract. The result showed that n-Hexane extract had the widest zone of inhibition against P. aeruginosa - 13.67 mm (12.5 mg/mL MIC), B. subtilis - 15 mm (12.5 mg/mL MIC), while acetone extract was most active against S. enterica ser. Typhi - 24.67 mm (6.25 mg/mL MIC), S. aureus - 24.83 mm (3.13 mg/mL MIC), E. coli - 13.33 mm (1.56 mg/mL MIC) and Klebsiella spp. - 18.33 mm (12.5 mg/mL MIC). These findings indicated that n-Hexane and acetone extract of M. lucida exhibited significant antimicrobial activity. Therefore, further research should be carried out to isolate the bioactive compounds with potentials in developing new drug leads against drug-resistant microbial strains.

<p><strong>(</strong><em><strong>Molecular Identification and Relationships Among Several Pineapple Accessions Using RAPD Marker to Support the Assembling New Varieties</strong></em><strong>)</strong></p><p>Produksi dan produktivitas nenas dapat ditingkatkan antara lain melalui penggunaan varietas unggul. Dalam perakitan varietas, dibutuhkan informasi hubungan kekerabatan antartetuanya agar diperoleh efek heterosis yang tinggi melalui kegiatan identifikasi secara molekuler. Penelitian bertujuan (1) mengetahui tingkat polimorfisme primer yang digunakan,(2) mengidentifikasi fragmen DNA spesifik yang membedakan individu atau kelompok individu nenas, dan (3) mengetahui hubungan kekerabatan antarspesies dan aksesi nenas. Penelitian dilaksanakan mulai bulan Mei–Desember 2014 di Laboratorium Uji Mutu Benih dan Molekuler Balai Penelitian Tanaman Buah Tropika. Sampel yang digunakan sebanyak 19 aksesi dari empat spesies nenas (Ananas comosus, A. bracteatus, A. lucidus, dan A. nanus). Sebanyak 20 marka rapid amplified polymorphism DNA (RAPD) digunakan dalam analisis. Data diskor secara biner kemudian dianalisis menggunakan program NTSYSpc 2,1x. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa polimorfisme 20 primer yang diuji berkisar 33–100% dengan rata-rata 87%. Primer dengan tingkat polimorfisme 100%, yaitu RAPD3, OPA13, OPAV3, OPC12, OPC16, dan OPY15. Kelompok Cayenne dicirikan oleh marka RAPD1 ukuran1.000 base-pair (bp) dan OPAV3 700 bp. Kelompok Queen dapat diidentifikasikan oleh marka RAPD3 ukuran 700 bp, kelompok Spanish dengan marka RAPD2 dan RAPD3 ukuran 1.500 bp. Analisis kluster menunjukkan bahwa 19 aksesi yang diuji terpisah menjadi enam kelompok pada koefisien kesamaan genetik 0,75, yaitu kelompok Queen, Cayenne, Spanish, A. bracteatus, A. lucidus, dan A. nanus. Aksesi yang diuji mempunyai keragaman genetik yang luas dengan koefisien kesamaan genetik berkisar 0,41–0,85. Aksesi yang mempunyai kesamaan genetik tertinggi, yaitu antara N-73 dengan BB (0,85) dan terkecil, yaitu antara N-94 (A. nanus) dengan N-18 (Green Spanish) sebesar 0,41. Implikasi hasil penelitian adalah aksesi yang mempunyai kesamaan genetik tinggi salah satunya dapat dieliminasi untuk efisiensi dalam pengelolaan plasma nutfah, sedangkan aksesi-aksesi yang memiliki kesamaan genetik kecil, baik digunakan sebagai tetua persilangan agar diperoleh variabilitas genetik yang luas dan efek heterosis yang tinggi.</p><p><strong>Keywords</strong></p><p><em>Ananas</em> spp.; Identifikasi; Karakterisasi; Kekerabatan genetik; Molekuler.</p><p><strong>Abstract</strong></p><p>Pineapple production and productivity can increased by the use of superior variety. Pertaining to variety assembling, the relationship information among parents are needed to gain heterosis effect through molecular identification activity. This research was aimed to (1) determine the level of polymorphism primers used, (2) identify specific DNA fragments which discrete individual or group of pineapple, and (3) reveal genetic relationship among pineapple species and accessions. The experiment was conducted on May to December 2014 in Seeds Quality Testing and Molecular Laboratory of Indonesian Tropical Fruit Research Institute. Nineteen accessions from four species (Ananas comosus, A. brachteatus, A. lucidus, and A. nanus) of pineapple were used as samples. Twenty rapid amplified polymorphism DNA (RAPD) markers were used on molecular analysis. The data were scored binary and then they were analyzed using NTSYSpc 2.1x computer software. The analysis showed that the 20 primers had 33–100% polymorphic with 87% in average. Primers with 100% polymorphism level were RAPD3, OPA13, OPAV3, OPC12, OPC16, and OPY15. Cayenne group could be denoted with RAPD1 and OPAV3 markers by 1,000 base-pairs (bp) and 700 bp band, respectively. Meanwhile the Queen group can be identified by 700 bp band RAPD3 marker. The Spanish group can be specified by1,500 bp band RAPD2 and RAPD3 markers. Based on cluster analysis the 19 accessions were separated into six groups with 0.75 genetic similarity coefficient i.e., Queen, Cayenne, Spanish, A. bracteatus, A. lucidus, and A. nanus. These accessions had a wide genetic diversity with 0.41 to (0.85) genetic similarity coefficients. The highest genetic similarity coefficient (0.85) was determined between N-73 and BB, whereas the lowest value down to 0.41 was indicated on N-94 (A. nanus) and N-18 (Green Spanish). The implications of this research are that one of two accessions that have high genetic similarities can be eliminated for efficiency in the management of germplasm. While accessions which have little genetic similarity are both used as crosses parent in order to obtain wide genetic variability and high heterosis effects.</p>

En el siglo IV a. C. comienza el declive de la supremacía ateniense en Grecia derivado de las continuas luchas internas, el auge del imperio persa y la amenaza militar de una Macedonia fuerte conducida por Filipo II. En este contexto Demóstenes desarrollará, a través de sus Filípicas y sus Olínticas, la que puede ser considerada una de las primeras campaña de comunicación y relaciones públicas institucionales de la antigüedad, sustentada en la persuasión de la oratoria, para concienciar a la opinión pública a cerca de los peligros que el régimen autocrático macedonio representaba para los principios democráticos atenienses. A través de una revisión teórica fundamentada en el uso de fuentes secundarias, sobre todo bibliográficas, los resultados de este trabajo demuestran que la campaña desarrollada por Demóstenes contra Filipo II de Macedonia puede ser considerada como una de las primeras campañas estratégicas de relaciones públicas que, con una finalidad persuasiva, se sustentó en el uso intencional de la oratoria.________________________________In the 4th century B.C. it begins the decline of the Athenian supremacy in Greece derived from the continuous internal fights, the summit of the Persian empire and the military threat of a strong Macedonia led by Filipo II. In this context Demostenes will develop, through its Philippics and Olynthiacs, one of the first public relations campaigns of the antiquity, sustained in the persuasion of the oratory, to report to the public opinion about the danger that the autocratic Macedonian regime was representing by the democracy of Athens. Across a theoretical review based on the use of secondary sources, especially bibliographical, the results of this work demonstrate that the campaign developed by Demóstenes against Filipo II of Macedonia can be considered to be one of the first strategic campaigns of public relations that, with a persuasive purpose, were sustained in the intentional use of the oratory.

Estamos ante las formas extremas de la modernidad liberal, que concluye el proceso de extrañamiento del sujeto individual, ahora consigo mismo, en un poshumanismo, que tiene como horizonte distópico la inteligencia artifi cial y la racionalidad cínica. En el segundo aspecto, la paradoja es la presencia de una especie de “ultraimperialismo”, con la concentración extrema de la riqueza y de nuevas formas de pobreza, exclusión y desechabilidad de pueblos y continentes; pero con la agudización de las contradicciones interimperialistas. Enfrentamos a los imperialismos, en plural. No se cumplió la expectativa del “fi n de la historia” y del triunfo de Occidente, después de la Caída del Muro, sino que entramos en una fase de guerras y confl ictos en diversa escala. No se trata de una reedición de la “Guerra Fría” entre dos polos, sino de un proceso complejo: la contradicción entre el eje Norte-Sur, liderado por el imperialismo norteamericano en relación con las potencias tradicionales EE.UU.-UE-Japón, y el ejeEste-Oeste, liderado por la alianza China-Rusia en relación con los BRICs; y la presencia de contradicciones al interior de cada polo entre dinámicas globalistas-fi nancieras y nacionalistas-posindustriales. El fi n del orden westfaliano y el debilitamiento de los estados-nacionales, se combina con el vacío de un Estado mundial, que trata de ser copado por el imperialismo norteamericano, como guardián mundial, en base a una estrategia guerrerista y el refuerzo de tendencias de nuevas carreras armamentistas. En la relación con los pueblos del Sur, la modifi cación principal de los nuevos imperialismos está en los dispositivos de “acumulación por desposesión” y en la delegación de guerras civiles enmarcadas en disputas geopolíticas, con dinámicas de vaciamiento de los estados nacionales. Con ello, las fronteras de las guerras y los puntos calientes de los confl ictos se ubican en el entrecruzamiento de tres dinámicas:el control de los cinco monopolios estratégicos, sobre todo vinculados a la renta tradicional y la renta tecnológica; las confrontaciones civilizatorias-religiosas-étnicas; y las disputas geopolíticas.La pregunta fi nal es sobre los caminos de la paz desde los pueblos y desde el Sur: negociaciones o rendiciones, resistencias y desconexiones, luchas éticopolíticas.

Teil der taxonomischen Studien zur Hydrophiliden-Gattung Enochrus Thomson (Hebauer, 1998, 2001, 2002) wird die E. picinus-Gruppe vorgestellt und um drei neue Arten (Enochrus fosteri sp. n., E. frieseri sp. n. und E. lucens sp. n.) aus Afrika erweitert. E. nitidulus (Kuwert) wurde als jüngeres Synonym von E. hesperidum (Sharp), und Enochrus (Methydrus) asperanus Hebauer, 1999 als jüngeres Synonym von E. (Hydatotrephis) hartmanni Hebauer, 1998 erkannt. Plants in the Australian genus Eremophila (Scrophulariaceae) have attracted considerable recent attention for their antimicrobial compounds, which possess a wide range of chemical structures. As they are typically associated with the oily-waxy resin layer covering leaves and green branchlets, and Eremophila lucida is prominent among the species containing a pronounced sticky resin layer, this species was considered of interest for assessing its antibacterial constituents. The n-hexane fraction of the crude acetone extract of the leaves exhibited antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Isolation led to the known compounds cembratriene, (3Z, 7E, 11Z)-15-hydroxycembra-3,7,11-trien-19-oic acid (1), the sesquiterpenoid, farnesal (2) and the viscidane diterpenoid, 5α-hydroxyviscida-3,14-dien-20-oic acid (3). The purified compounds were tested for antibacterial activity with 2 and 3 showing moderate antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria.
