The monograph is a continuation of the monograph by L.G. Pochebut, A.L. Sventsitsky, L.V. Mararitsa, T.V. Kazantseva, I.V. Kuznetsova "Social capital of personality" (Moscow: INFRA-M, 2014). It contains the theory, methodology and empirical studies of the social capital of organizations. The scientific literature on the problems of social capital of organizations is analyzed. The theory of social capital and research methodology developed by the authors are presented, and empirical research results are presented. The main attention is paid to the socio-psychological approach describing social capital as a system of relationships between employees of an organization. Four aspects of the study of social capital are considered: resource, network, economic and socio-psychological. A methodology for studying social capital has been developed, a socio-psychological methodology "Components of an organization's social capital" and a questionnaire "Personality Networking strategies" have been created. For sociologists, managers, heads of firms and corporations, teachers and researchers, all whose work is related to the management of employee relationships in organizations.

This Handbook offers a state-of-the-art account of research in language policy and planning (LPP). The Handbook examines the ways in which scholarship in language policy and planning (LPP) has understood the changing relationship between LPP and political-economic conditions, and how this changing relationship has shaped knowledge production in the field. With an underlying interest in language, social critique, and inequality, scholars in this volume work in widely divergent local, regional, national, and institutional settings, to investigate the ongoing processes that have gradually become the focus of contemporary LPP research, in many cases forcing scholars and practitioners in the field to revisit their own assumptions, views, and methodological perspectives. Through a critical examination of LPP, the Handbook offers new directions for a field in theoretical and methodological turmoil as a result of the socioeconomic, institutional, and discursive processes of change taking place under the conditions of late modernity. Chapters in this handbook are divided into three major sections: conceptual underpinnings of LPP; LPP, nation states, and communities; and LPP and late modernity. Subsections include chapters focusing on LPP and nationalism, minorities, standardization, and globalization; LPP in institutions of the nation-state and in communities; language, neoliberalism, and governmentality; language and mobility, diversity, and new social media; and new approaches to extending LPP scholarship. A final chapter offers an integrative summary and suggestions for future directions in LPP research.

The closing chapter explores the consequences that the processes of change taking place under the conditions of late modernity may have for language policy and planning (LPP) research. In particular, it addresses seven key strands of discussion that emerge from the chapters in this Handbook, and which the editors believe will be important in the future of the field, namely (1) the continued importance of critical approaches; (2) the paradox of agency; (3) the need for ethnographic approaches to move from recognition of their value to further engagement with epistemological awareness; (4) the challenge of creating new links between LPP and alternative philosophical traditions, beyond European political theory; (5) the increasing role of media in LPP; (6) the need for expanding collaborations and revisiting long-standing assumptions about community-based research, language rights, and activism; and (7) the imperative of addressing ethical issues in contemporary LPP research through researchers’ reflexivity.

Interdisciplinarity is a hallmark of language policy and planning (LPP) research and reveals how the impact of language plans and policies transcends disciplinary boundaries. Interdisciplinarity also means that clear LPP-specific methods have been slow to develop, if at all. This chapter reviews the methodological history of the field, highlighting major shifts engendered by particular research approaches, and ends with some predictions about where the field might be headed as evidenced by emerging trends. First, epistemological foundations are discussed, which help clarify methodological directions and perspectives. Then, a chronological history of LPP research methods is considered, with particular attention to language planning foundations, the critical and empirical turns, and emerging trends.

The UK government’s Offender Personality Disorder (OPD) strategy has provided a unique opportunity to revise the way in which health and criminal justice agencies collaborate in order to develop creative psychologically informed approaches to managing a complex group of individuals. This introduction to ‘Managing Personality Disordered Offenders: A Pathways Approach’ outlines the development and implementation of the strategy from the perspective of a consortium of mental health trusts—the London Pathways Partnership (LPP). It outlines the commissioning constraints in this particular geographical setting and details both the theoretical underpinnings and operational models used to implement the OPD pathway in community and secure settings. The chapter concludes with a review of the first four years of these services and a reappraisal of the strategic model.

This chapter looks at language policy through the new speaker lens, exploring the many ways in which research on new speakers links to the discursive and ethnographic approaches that have recently come to the fore in the language policy literature. Following a brief discussion of how the new speaker concept facilitates a reconsideration of traditional approaches to language policy and planning (LPP) in minority language settings, the chapter surveys LPP research in new speaker contexts, summarizes the challenges facing research on new speakers, and discusses the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of this research. Noting that new speaker studies are not only situated in minority settings, the chapter concludes with a look at emerging areas of research beyond minority language contexts.

The opening chapter of The Oxford Handbook of Language Policy and Planning addresses many of the current questions that researchers face under contemporary conditions of change tied to so-called late modernity, with an ambition to better understand the current period in which the field of language policy and planning (LPP) operates. Against the background of the academic journey of the editors of the Handbook, the chapter first provides an overview of the foundations of the field of LPP. After this, it details the specific questions that have guided the organization of this volume. In the final section, the chapter maps out some of the different threads of recent LPP research evident in this Handbook, highlighting the issues that scholarly analysis seeks to understand and the approaches to research used in the investigation, and anticipating some of the generalizations that emerge.

Managing Personality Disordered Offenders: A Pathways Approach describes the development and implementation of the Offender Personality Disorder (OPD) strategy in the UK. It begins by reviewing the existing evidence base for interventions for personality disordered offenders in the UK and elsewhere, before outlining the principles and requirements of the strategy and how it has been implemented in the community and secure settings in London and south-east England by the London Pathways Partnership (LPP). The LPP is a consortium of four mental health trusts working together with the probation and prison services to deliver community and secure OPD services: individual chapters, written by leaders within the LPP and wider OPD pathway, address key aspects, including staff selection and training; case identification and formulation; intervening in the community and in secure settings; service user involvement; and commissioning and joint working. Each chapter includes an authoritative review of the relevant evidence base, together with consideration of available options and the rational for the approach chosen for services in London. This is followed by a practical ‘how to do it’ guide and review of what has worked and what has not during the first four years of service delivery. Each chapter includes a section on evaluation and proposals regarding possible ‘next steps’. The book concludes with a formulation-based analysis of whether or not the OPD strategy has had any impact on its stated outcomes and how these might be re-evaluated as the mechanisms by which change is achieved in the pathway become better understood.

This chapter examines the social impact of language policy and planning (LPP) in the daily life of Wichi communities in Argentina. The analysis shows how languages and bilingualism, categorized as a specific resource to access public positions in deprived regions in Argentina, define a disputed territory and shape social conflicts among groups. The chapter focuses on the Argentinean region known as El Impenetrable, where new language policies are transforming health and educational institutions traditionally managed by non-indigenous people. The presence of new actors in public institutions, assessed with relation to language competences, and the setting of a new political agenda can be explained from local and global processes where public decisions are rooted. Ethnographic sociolinguistics and discourse analysis are combined in a methodological approach to LPP that takes into account the interplay of different voices in relation to local and social transformations regarding indigenous language uses and values.

This chapter describes the different modalities for assessment of systolic function by transthoracic echocardiography. Firstly, the basic principles of physiology and the determinants of left ventricular (LV) performance are considered, followed by a systematic appraisal of the methodologies for global LV systolic function assessment. Starting with M-mode echocardiography, passing through the traditional two-dimensional echocardiography evaluation to three-dimensional echocardiography approaches, main strengths and limitations are described. Power Doppler usefulness, regarding stroke volume calculations and dP/dt measurement are summarily explained, taking into consideration the usual pitfalls found in daily practice. There is a section dedicated to regional systolic function evaluation, with the recommendations for standardized LV division and differential characteristics of wall motion abnormalities. Additionally, more recent approaches with tissue Doppler imaging and strain analyses for global and regional LV function assessment are described. Finally, a section is dedicated to right ventricle systolic function which describes all modalities of evaluation.

The assessment of left ventricular (LV) systolic function is one of the most important parts of correct diagnosis, selection of treatment strategy or medications, and prediction of prognosis. Although cardiac magnetic resonance imaging is generally accepted as the gold standard in vivo imaging modality for assessing LV systolic function, its practical use is limited due to its limited availability, high cost, and the presence of conditions precluding its performance such as a pacemaker, claustrophobia, and severe arrhythmia. Thus, transthoracic echocardiography is a first-line imaging modality employed in daily practice and has been widely used. Since the first attempts with M-mode approach, remarkable improvements have been made with the advent of two-dimensional echocardiography, and more recently three-dimensional echocardiography, with high accuracy and reproducibility. More sophisticated methodologies such as strain imaging, based on Doppler or speckle tracking techniques, provide a more sensitive and quantitative measurement of myocardial contractility, and are gaining a place in common daily practice. This chapter describes different modalities that have been used for assessment of LV systolic function based on echocardiography, and is grossly composed of two parts: LV global systolic function and LV regional or segmental systolic function. For better application of these conventional and novel methods of assessing LV systolic function, strengths and pitfalls of these techniques should be acknowledged.

The book brings forth a comprehensive presentation of one of the most interesting of contemporary issues, namely an analysis of the relation between science and faith in Russian religious thought. It is a synthetic approach on the development of the problem throughout the whole history of Russian thought, starting from the medieval period and arriving in contemporary times. The key topic is considered the relationship between science and religion in the eighteenth century, the so-called academic philosophy of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the thought of Peter Chaadaev, the Slavophiles, and in the most influential literature figures, such as Fedor Dostoevsky and Lev Tolstoy. The book also analyzes two channels of the formation of philosophy in the context of the relationship between theology and science in Russia. The first is connected with the attempt to rationalize the truths of faith and is exemplified by Vladimir Soloviev and Nikolai Lossky; the second, the apophatic tradition, is presented by Fr. Pavel Florensky and Semen Frank. The book then describes the relation to scientific knowledge in the thought of Lev Shestov, Nikolai Berdyaev, Sergius Bulgakov, and Alexei Losev as well as the original project of Russian Cosmism (in the examples of Nikolai Fedorov, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, and Vladimir Vernadsky). Finally, the book presents the current state of the discussion on this topic by paying attention to the Neopatristic synthesis (Fr. Georges Florovsky and his followers) and offers a brief comparative analysis of the relationship between science and religion from the Western and Russian perspectives.

Echocardiography has become the gold standard for the assessment of patients with aortic stenosis (AS). It allows morphological assessment of the aortic valve and provides information on the aetiology of the disease. The quantification of AS includes primarily the measurement of transaortic jet velocities and gradients as well as the calculation of the valve area, thus combining flow-dependent and relatively flow-independent variables. Awareness of potential pitfalls is fundamental when assessing these variables. Haemodynamic consequences of AS on left ventricular (LV) size, wall thickness, and function as well as associated valve lesions and estimates of pulmonary artery pressure are required for the comprehensive evaluation of the disease. In the setting of classical low-flow–low-gradient AS with reduced LV systolic function, low-dose dobutamine echocardiography is of particular diagnostic and prognostic importance. The entity of severe low-flow–low-gradient AS in the presence of preserved LV function remains a particular diagnostic challenge. For accurate differentiation from pseudo-severe AS or misclassified moderate AS, an integrated approach including additional variables such as the extent of valve calcification by computed tomography may be required. In addition to the assessment of AS aetiology and quantification of its severity, echocardiography can provide predictors of outcome that may have a major impact on the decision for intervention.

In this chapter, the authors focus on pedagogies, such as the theories of Lev Vygotsky and the active learning concepts of John Dewey, that contribute to the making of meaning, and the acquisition of meaningfulness by proposing a sociotransformative approach to choral pedagogy in the teaching of the expert chorister. Based on constructivist learning theories, and applying reciprocal teaching, this perspective centers on the conductor’s influence as they design opportunities for dialogic conversation, authentic activity, metacognition, and reflexivity. When skillfully integrated into the fabric of the choral rehearsal/performance continuum, the pedagogy brokers singers into a community of practice. The rehearsal scaffolds and schema foster competency, personal and musical agency, identity, and critical consciousness among the singers. This ensures that the performance is more than the singing of pitches with accurate rhythms, dynamics, and intonation, and embodies both cognitive and affective responses to the music and the music making.

Cancer therapeutics may induce cardiac damage in the left and the right ventricle. Radiotherapy most frequently induces valvular damage, carotid stenosis, and coronary artery disease. Pericardial disease may be due to both chemo- and radiotherapy. The manifestations of both chemo- and radiotherapy can develop acutely but also become overt years after their performance, in particular after radiotherapy. The main cardiac damage of cancer therapeutics-related cardiac dysfunction (CTRCD) corresponds to the reduction of left ventricular (LV) systolic function. The Expert Consensus document from ASE and EACVI has defined CTRCD as a decrease in LV ejection fraction (LVEF) of greater than 10 percentage points, to a value less than 53%. The accurate calculation of LVEF at baseline and during follow-up is extremely important. The assessment of LV longitudinal function, in particular of speckle tracking-derived global longitudinal strain (GLS), can provide additional information, allowing early, subclinical detection of CTRCD. The ideal strategy could be to compare the measurements of GLS obtained during chemotherapy, with the one obtained at baseline. An integrated approach with the use of echocardiography at standardized, clinical preselected intervals with biomarker (ultrasensitive troponin) assessment prior to each chemotherapy cycle could be suggested in patients at high risk of CTRCD. Follow-up after therapy should depend on the type of chemotherapy/radiotherapy and the presence/absence of on-therapy CTRCD. Long-term follow-up should be planned after radiotherapy.

Lev Shestov’s By Faith Alone confronts Eastern and Western European conceptions of faith through Russian literature, ancient and medieval philosophy, and Christian theology. Written from 1910-1914, this first English-language translation brings together important early writings on the medieval church and Martin Luther. Shestov reconciles the Greek notion of rational truth with Biblical revelation by drawing on a wide range of ancient, medieval, philosophical and theological sources from Plato to Hegel, Tertullian to Saint Augustine, and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux to William of Ockam. He argues that rational truth has skewed Christian belief by determining knowledge and truth in ways that prize the mind over the world. This approach marks a turning point in the evolution of Shestov’s existential thought. It establishes a basic division that became central to Shestov’s later work, between Athens as reason and Jerusalem as faith. By Faith Alone provides a crucial piece of the puzzle in the genesis of Shestov’s later and better-known writings on medieval philosophy.

Diastole is the part of the cardiac cycle starting at aortic valve closure and ending at mitral valve closure. Evaluation of diastolic function by echocardiography is useful to diagnose heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, and regardless of ejection fraction, echocardiography can be used to estimate left ventricular filling pressure. Assessment of diastolic function includes analysis of left ventricular relaxation and compliance, left atrial and left ventricular filling pressures. This chapter describes the phases of diastole and covers the integrated approach of LV diastolic function through M-Mode and 2D/3D echocardiography, pulsed-wave Doppler echocardiography, and pulsed-wave tissue Doppler echocardiography.

This chapter traces the genealogy of the critical ethnographic turn in research on language policy and planning (LPP). The first part of the chapter shows how different strands of ethnographic research contributed to this intellectual movement, eventually moving us beyond the divide between “micro” and “macro.” Here, we consider the specific contributions of research in the ethnography of communication, interactional sociolinguistics, linguistic anthropology, critical sociolinguistic ethnography, and the ethnography of language policy. The second part of the chapter focuses on the particular advantages that accrue from adopting critical ethnographic approaches. Here, bringing ontological and epistemological perspectives into the frame and highlighting the need for researcher reflexivity, we consider critical ethnography as a way of seeing, as a way of looking and of building knowledge, and, lastly, as a way of being as a researcher.

Is populism “the ideology of democracy” (Margaret Canovan), a danger to democracy that entails “a claim to exclusive moral representation” (Jan-Werner Müller), or rather a “series of discursive resources which can be put to very different uses” (Ernesto Laclau)? This is the first German-language edited volume bringing together discursive approaches to populism in a broad sense. The book features conceptually sound as well as empirically nuanced analyses of populist discourses in the context of different states, public spheres as well as political parties and movements. It presents a wide range of theoretical positions on the democratic and authoritarian uses of populism and develops them in the form of country case studies. Human cognition increasingly is coming to be understood and studied as something that does not necessarily reside within individuals, but rather as something that evolves through interpersonal communication. Using the interpersonal event as the unit of analysis, the authors ofCollaborative Cognitionexamine how children interactively co-construct knowledge and ways of knowing in social contexts. In an illustration of the idea that thinking is as much interactive as self-reflective--one that supports the cognitive developmental theories of Jean Piaget and Lev Vygotsky--this important new study examines the social origins of thought, and the inherently discursive nature of thinking itself. The social context in question was created by the authors, who showed to pairs of children a variety of game materials and asked them to collaborate on creating a board game. Negotiating the co-construction of a game, back and forth, turn by turn, enabled the children to construct jointly a series of mutually obligatory goals and rules that sequentially defined the evolution of increasingly more complex modes of play. This innovative use of sequential analyses to study evolving streams of conversation discourse represents a fully process-oriented, rather than outcome-oriented, approach to studying cognitive development.

Heart Failure is a clinical syndrome characterized by symptoms and signs of systemic or pulmonary congestion, associated with elevated intracardiac filling pressures. The structural and functional abnormalities of the myocardium which characterize the heart failure state can be explored by various imaging approaches. Hence cardiac imaging plays an integral part in the evaluation the heart failure patient. Radionuclide imaging techniques may be uniquely suited to address several important clinical questions in heart failure related to etiology, the quantification and serial evaluation of LV function, and the selection of patients for therapies including coronary revascularization, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD) and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT).

Echocardiography is the cornerstone examination for the assessment of aortic regurgitation (AR): it provides reliable evaluation of the aortic valve and allows diagnosis and identification of the mechanism of regurgitation. The specific aetiology of the disease can be identified in the majority of cases. A combination of quantitative and quantitative Doppler and two-dimensional (2D) echocardiographic parameters allows the evaluation of the severity of AR and determination of the haemodynamic and left ventricular function repercussions. Echocardiography allows the detection of associated lesions of the aortic root or other valves. In symptomatic patients, echocardiography is essential to confirm the severity of AR. In asymptomatic patients with moderate or severe AR, echocardiography is essential for regular follow-up, by providing precise and reproducible measurements of LV dimensions and function, and for identifying patients who should be considered for elective surgical intervention. In most cases, transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) provides all of the necessary information and transoesophageal echocardiography in usually not required. Real-time three-dimensional (3D) TTE can be complementary to 2D echocardiography for the assessment of the mechanism and quantification of AR by increasing the level of confidence, especially when 2D echocardiographic data are inconclusive or discordant with clinical findings. Tissue Doppler imaging and especially the speckle tracking method are promising approaches to detect early LV dysfunction in patients with asymptomatic severe AR. Echocardiography is therefore the key examination for the assessment of AR and at the centre of the strategic discussion concerning the indications and timing of surgery.

Cinematic Encounters with Disastertakes Hollywood’s disaster movies and their codified versions of natural disaster, post-apocalyptic survival, and extra-terrestrial threat as the starting point for an analytical trajectory that works toward new understandings of how cinema shapes and informs our conceptions of disaster and catastrophe. It examines a range of films from distinct regional and industrial contexts: Hollywood, indie movies, different kinds of documentaries from the US and elsewhere, and auteurist-realist cinema from Europe and Asia. Moving across and beyond critical and industrial categories that often inform thinking about cinema, this book contends that different approaches to film style can push us to imagine disaster in distinct ways, with distinct ethical connotations. Framed by contemporary concerns around the global climate crisis and the advent of the Anthropocene, questions about how films can best offer responses to historical exigency guide the book’s explorations of spectacular 2010s blockbusters likeGravity(2013) andSan Andreas(2015), environmental documentaries including the paradigmaticAn Inconvenient Truth(2006), post-disaster films by auteurs including Abbas Kiarostami and Lav Diaz, and more. Conceiving of disaster as intersubjective ethics between humans and nonhuman alterity – forces of nature, errant technology, monsters, ghosts, and other entities – it analyses how formal techniques and narrative strategies render encounters in which human protagonists are confronted with the threat of death and respond in ways that can be instructive for our planet’s present juncture.
