One hundred items of 60 talcum powders and 40 body lotions were examined for their total aerobic bacterial, coliform and fungal counts. We also carried out anaerobic bacterial counts for talcum powder as well as tests to detect some potentially hazardous bacteria in all tested samples. Talcum powders were more heavily contaminated with bacteria than body lotions. More than 60% of the tested body lotions contained no viable bacteria or less than 100 C.F.U./gm, while 35% of the talcum powders contained this level. Five per percent of the talcum powder were contaminated with 104 C.F.U. /gm and none of the body lotions were contaminated to that extent. No coliforms were recovered from any of the body lotions, while 3.3% of the talcum powder examined contained coliforms in the range of 250-300 C.F.U/gm.Staphylococcus Spp. were detected in one sample of both talcum powders and body lotions. Two samples of talcum powder contained E. coli. Neither talcumpowder nor body lotions showed fungal counts. Also no talcum powder showed the presence of anaerobic bacterial counts.

Context: Caprine milk has beneficial antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, thus the potential to be developed as a topical formulation against the skin-aging process. However, the influence of temperature during topical formulation storage from caprine milk must be explored. Aims: To analyze the physical stability and heavy metal contents of skin lotion from caprine milk, yogurt, and kefir. Methods: All lotions were storage at different conditions, such as 4°C, 25°C without light exposure (LE), 25°C with light exposure, and 33°C for 12 months. The characteristics of color, aroma, separation, viscosity, pH level, and heavy metals were determined periodically. Results: Yogurt lotions showed more maintained color, aroma, and separation under different storage conditions than milk and kefir lotions. The viscosity of all samples was relatively stable, with a minor reduction at 33°C of temperature storage. The longer duration of storage reduced the pH level for all lotions. Heavy metals were slightly detected in safe range values. Conclusions: This study concludes that the physical characteristics of lotions made from caprine milk, yogurt, and kefir were relatively stable during the different storage conditions, and these lotions are proposed as a safe topical formulation for skin application.

Mosquitoes are one of those insects with an often annoying presence. Saponins, polyphenols, and essential oils are found in the Kenikir plant (Cosmos caudatus). Experimental research was conducted with tests covering: organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, and effectiveness. Organoleptic lotions at concentrations of 5%, 10% and 15% have a dark green colour with a distinctive odour of Kenikir. Lotions with a concentration of 5% are homogeneous, while at concentrations of 10% and 15% are not homogeneous. Organolepticrequirements and homogeneity as lotions are met. The results obtained showed that the Kenikir leaf extract was effective at repelling mosquitoes.

As part of this study, several rheological tests were carried out on three common, commercially available body lotions to analyze their complex properties. The tests described in this study were simple and predictive in which the viscoelastic properties were successfully related with the end-use performance properties such as applicability, processing behavior, temperature sensitivity and storage and thermal stability.

ABSTRACTIn previous research, ethanolic extract of pineapple peel (EEPP) has activity as a sunscreen because of the content of flavonoids. EEPP can be formulated in the form of creams and lotions to facilitate use on the skin. This study aims to evaluate the physical chemistry characteristics of EEPP creams and lotions. Creams and lotions were made in 3 formulas based on variations in FI extract concentrations (15.0%), FII (17.5%), FIII (20.0%), base controls and positive controls (preparations on the market). The cream obtained was evaluated for physical chemical characteristics including organoleptic, homogeneity, adhesion and dispersion, viscosity, pH and SPF values which were analyzed descriptively. cream with varying concentrations of green, the distinctive smell of pineapple, homogeneous and in accordance with the pH of the skin. Increasing the concentration of EEPP in the preparation has an effect on increasing viscosity, adhesion but decreasing the dispersion. Whereas the lotion shows greenish color, aromatic odor and semisolid texture and is easily applied. The increase in EEPP in lotion affects the increase in pH, adhesion, but decreasing the dispersion.Keywords: Creams, lotions, sunscreen, pineapple fruit skin

Two emollients, ammonium lactate 12% lotion and a liposome-based moisturizing lotion, were compared in a double-blind test for efficacy in the treatment of plantar xerosis. A total of 43 out of 57 participants (75%) with bilateral plantar xerosis followed instructions completely and applied the lotions (one to each foot) twice daily for 4 weeks. Each participant was evaluated once a week for 6 weeks (the final 2 weeks for evaluation of post-treatment regression) to determine xerotic grade (degree of dryness) and treatment effectiveness. With both lotions, significant improvement began during the second week of treatment and continued into the fourth week. There were no significant differences between the two lotions in the 6-week patterns of either xerotic grade or treatment effectiveness.

Personal care products are increasingly being marketed to protect skin from the potentially harmful effects of air pollution. Here, we experimentally measure ozone deposition rates to skin and the generation rates and yields of oxidized products from bare skin and skin coated with various lotion formulations. Lotions reduced the ozone flux to the skin surface by 12% to 25%; this may be due to dilution of reactive skin lipids with inert lotion compounds or by reducing ozone diffusivity within the resulting mixture. The yields of volatile squalene oxidation products were 25% to 70% lower for a commercial sunscreen and for a base lotion with an added polymer or with antioxidants. Lower yields are likely due to competitive reactions of ozone with lotion ingredients including some ingredients that are not intended to be ozone sinks. The dynamics of the emissions of squalene ozonation product 6 methyl-2-heptenone (6MHO) suggest that lotions can dramatically reduce the solubility of products in the skin film. While some lotions appear to reduce the rate of oxidation of squalene by ozone, this evidence does not yet demonstrate that the lotions reduce the impact of air pollution on skin health.

Background: Scabies is a contagious pruritic skin condition caused by the mite Sarcoptesscabiei var. hominis, and it is one of the major public health problem in developing country like ours. To determine and compare the efficacy of topical permethrin and topical gamma benzene hexachloride in treatment of scabies in population of Nepal. Methods: This was a prospective, randomized, comparative study conducted in 300 diagnosed cases of scabies treated with permethrin and gamma benzene hexachloride. Results: At the end of 2nd week, treatment was effective in 91.2% cases in permethrin (group A) and 64.6% in gamma benzene hexachloride (group B). After switch over of the non-improved patients to the other group drug, 6.7% were treated successfully with gamma benzene hexachloride and 80.9% were treated successfully with permethrin at the end of 4th week. No major side effects were observed in both groups. Gamma benzene hexachloride was found to be cost effective than permethrin. Conclusion: Permethrin was found to be more effective than gamma benzene hexachloride in treatment of scabies.

Skin aging as a complex process involves innumerable genetic, biochemical, and environmental mechanisms. This in vitro study delves deep into whether topical cosmetic formulations containing oleuropein combined with essential oils of Helichrysum italicum or kumquat prevent skin aging. Two separate cosmetic lotions were formulated and evaluated by their physical and bioactive properties. The oil-in-water emulsions were prepared, antiaging lotions were formulated with the addition of oleuropein combined with either of the two essential oils as active components with the equal total doses of 1.5%, and lotions containing vitamin C or only oleuropein were used as controls. Findings revealed that pH, viscosity, and appearance of the lotions were stable and that the essential oils did not influence the physical properties. The lotion containing the combination of oleuropein and H. italicum exhibited the highest antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. In contrast, the oleuropein and kumquat combination exposed the highest inhibitory effect on all three hyaluronidase, lipoxygenase, and tyrosinase enzymes. It can be inferred that the combination of oleuropein and H. italicum is the most potent active ingredient of antioxidant in skin care products and that the oleuropein and kumquat combination is the better candidate as an active ingredient against skin inflammation, pigmentation, and loss of collagen.

The problem of alopecia, for treatment of which the use of over the counter lotions containing minoxidil is recommended, is paid considerable attention all over the world. The consumers rarely seek medical advice due to certain psychological barriers. Thus, it contributes to the uncontrolled use of the drugs, and fixation of their side effects becomes impossible. There are isolated reports on the effect of minoxidil containing lotions on male fertility. The Aim. To establish organometric parameters of testes and their paradidymis, functional parameters of spermatozoa in mature rats under topical exposure to a 10% minoxidil containing lotion. Methods. Analytical, toxicological, statistical. Results. It was established that under the conditions of 72-day percutaneous application of 10% minoxidil containing lotion some changes in the reproductive system organs can be observed, which are in particular a decrease in the mass of testes and epididymis, as well as a decrease in organs’ linear size. The total time of motor activity of gametes after exposure to a lotion containing 10% minoxidil has statistically significantly shortened, a 6-fold inhibition of the activity of redox processes occurred in the rats of the experimental group compared to the control one. Conclusions. Taking into consideration the obtained data and the uncontrolled and long-term use of 10% minoxidil containing lotions by men of reproductive age, an in-depth study of its gonadotoxic effects in experimental conditions in combination with epidemiological studies of the patients using these lotions is deemed necessary. Pierre Loti was a novelist and a marine officer who visited lots of countries. He gained popularity writing about his travels and travel impressions. This article analyses his travel to Nagasaki back in 1885 where he lived for half a year and had a ‘temporary wife’. His novel written during that travel is called “Madame Chrysanthème”. It’s one of his most extravagant and interesting pieces which made the author world-famous. It reflected common interest in the oriental life typical for that time and it predetermined the image of Japan in the European consciousness of the second half of the 19th century. Pierre Loti wrote about his ambition to make the novel as impressionist as possible determining impressionism not as an intellectual but as a decorative phenomenon related mostly to arts and translation of sensory perception. His interpretation of impressionism was expressed in “Madame Chrysanthème”, which is an attempt to describe the world around us, represented not only by the material world but by the author’s sensory perceptions and feelings. To be exact, this is impressionism in fiction. The world is a product of our sensory experience, and the author’s goal is to fix this experience, which is the sum of his observation and impressions. Pierre Loti creates his work where color plays the main role together with sounds and words. They are a sum total of the elements determining the reality in equal amounts. Stylistically “Madame Chrysanthème” is created according to impressionist canons, with lots of epithets, comparisons, metaphors, the author’s neologisms. The novel is written as a diary where separate episodes in chapters are separated from one another by large white empty gaps. The article discusses similarity of impressionism and the Japanese culture. However, a closer look demonstrates considerable differences between the European and the Oriental minds.

Topical corticosteroids are commonly used for the short-term management of seborrhoeic dermatitis (SD) of the scalp. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness, tolerance and cosmetic acceptability of desonide 0.05% solution, whose alcohol-free formulation is innovative with respect to traditional corticosteroid lotions, in the treatment of SD of the scalp. For this purpose, 155 adult subjects applied on scalp lesions desonide once daily for 1 week, on alternate days for 3 weeks, and two times a week for 4 weeks. A significant reduction of the severity of erythema, scaling and pruritus was observed (P<0.001). Interestingly, during the phase of gradual reduction of weekly applications, results were frequently maintained or improved further. Twenty patients (13%) at 4 weeks and 85 patients (58%) at 8 weeks had their scalp SD cleared. Most patients regarded the overall effectiveness, tolerability and acceptability as satisfactory; patients who had previously used common steroid lotions expressed a positive judgment on desonide solution compared to the other lotions in terms of efficacy, acceptability, rapidity of action, tolerability and persistence of effects. In conclusion, our preliminary findings indicate that desonide 0.05% solution is suitable for the short-term management of scalp SD.

However, many losses are caused by whitening lotion products in circulation, one of which is the addition of hydroquinone, a whitening substance that can cause damage to the skin.Objectives: This study aims to identify the hydroquinone content contained in whitening lotion.Methods: Experimental research using the Thin Layer Chromatography (KLT) method to test lotions for hazardous ingredients. It was conducted at the Chemistry Laboratory of Poltekkes Kemenkes Aceh in June 2022. Materials are whitening hand body lotion available online and not branded as many as five samples—determination of criteria, namely, low prices, high demand, and instant results. The single variable used in this study determines the presence or absence of hydroquinone in lotion samples.Results: This study has shown that five whitening lotion samples are positive. Sample S4 contains hydroquinone with an Rf value of 0,55 (< 0,05). Meanwhile, samples S1, S2, S3, and S5 were negative for hydroquinone.Conclusion: Some lotions tested have met the requirements of BPOM regulations and are safe to use, but one lotion is unsafe to use because it contains high hydroquinone.

Melanin is a pigment contains in human skin which role as a UV-absorbing agent. One of the exogenous melanins can be obtained from squid (Loligo sp.) ink. Squid ink melanin has potent free radical protection activities. This study aimed to determine the physicochemical, stability, antioxidant, and UV protection activities of squid ink powder lotions. Squid ink powders were obtained from the drying process using HCl 0.5M and stored in the climatic chamber. Antioxidant activity was conducted quantitatively using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazil) scavenging method. The best result of the DPPH scavenging activity was 29.12±0.023%, shown from formula III. UV protection activity was conducted by observing erythema scores in animal skin, which exposure to UV. This preparation inhibits the effect of UV exposure. Squid ink powder lotions are potential as a sunscreen product.

ABSTRAK Lemak biji tengkawang (Shorea mecistopteryx Ridley) merupakan salah satu tumbuhan khas Kalimantan yang memiliki karakteristik fisik menyerupai lemak kakao. Kandungan lemak nabati yang tinggi pada lemak biji tengkawang, seperti asam oleat sebesar 55,95%, asam palmitat 14,02%, miristat 0,05%, dan stearat 0,05% mendorong peneliti untuk melakukan penelitian dengan memanfaatkan lemak biji tengkawang sebagai basis dalam pembuatan sediaan kosmetika, seperti losion. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan mengkombinasi lemak biji tengkawang dan lemak kakao sebagai basis losion. Kombinasi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui karakteristik fisik losion yang dihasilkan dari perbedaan kosentrasi. Karakteristik fisik losion diketahui melalui beberapa evaluasi, yaitu organoleptis, homogenitas, viskositas, pH, daya lekat, penyusutan bobot, dan stabilitas secara mekanik. Berdasarkan evaluasi yang dilakukan diperoleh data yang menunjukkan adanya pengaruh yang disebabkan oleh perbedaan kosentrasi basis terhadap karakteristik fisik losion. Perbedaan karakteristik fisik yang mencolok terutama terlihat pada nilai viskositas yang menunjukkan formula I 1485,55 cp, formula II 3408,88 cp, formula III 2017,77 cp, dan formula IV 3314,44 cp. Viskositas meningkat seiring lama waktu penyimpanan dan ini berbanding lurus dengan kemampuan daya lekat losion. ABSTRACT Tengkawang seed fat (Shorea mecistopteryx Ridley) is one of the typical plants of Kalimantan that has physical characteristics resembling cocoa fat. The high content of vegetable fats in tengkawang seed fats, such as oleic acid by 55.95%, palmitic acid 14.02%, miristat 0.05%, and stearate 0.05% encouraged researchers to conduct research by utilizing tengkawang seed fat as the basis in the manufacture of cosmetic preparations, such as lotions. This research was conducted by combining tengkawang seed fat and cocoa fat as the basis of lotion. This combination aims to determine the physical characteristics of lotions resulting from differences in concentration. The physical characteristics of lotions are known through several evaluations, namely organoleptis, homogeneity, viscosity, pH, adhesion, weight shrinkage, and mechanical stability. Based on the evaluation conducted obtained data that shows the influence caused by differences in the concentration of the base to the physical characteristics of lotions. Striking differences in physical characteristics are especially noticeable in viscosity values indicating formulation I 1485.55 cp, formulation II 3408.88 cp, formulation III 2017.77 cp, and formulation IV 3314.44 cp. Viscosity increases over a long period of time and this is directly proportional to the lotion's adhesion capability.

Palm oil is naturally red due to the high content of beta carotene. Most of the fatty acids in crude palm oil (CPO) are saturated fatty acids, namely palmitic acid (32-59%), while that in pure palm oil (PPO) is linoleic acid (5-11%). Fatty acids function as a moisturizer for the skin. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of lotion preparations as emollients from pure palm oil and crude palm oil. The concentration of CPO and PPO in the lotions was 5 and 15% using the oil in water (O/W) base. The effectiveness of lotion preparations as emollients was based on descriptive data from 10 panelists whose skin moisture was tested using a skin analyzer. The result showed that lotions prepared with CPO and PPO at concentrations of 5 and 15% exerted a moisture content of more than 50% in the moist skin category.

Abstract Introduction Many over-the-counter products such as bubble baths, room sprays, and lotions claim they contain the pineal hormone melatonin and promote sleep. In this randomized, controlled, double-blind crossover trial we compared the impact of a commercial “sleep lotion” versus a placebo control lotion. Methods Participants applied lotions on two different nights, one hour before bedtime. To assess whether melatonin was absorbed through the skin and circulating systemically, we conducted enzyme linked immunosorbent assays on saliva samples to quantitate melatonin levels. We also assessed sleep quality the night after lotion application with a modified Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The amount of melatonin in Dr. Teal’s Sleep Lotion was measured using High Performance Liquid Chromatography. Results Our sample of 63 undergraduate college students scored an average of 6.3 ± 2.7 on the Global Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, with 65% above the cutoff of 5 indicating poor sleep quality in the previous 30 days. The melatonin-containing sleep lotion dramatically impacted salivary melatonin levels, increasing them up to ~1000 fold compared to the placebo control lotion. Sleep quality in the overall group was not impacted by the lotion, but in a subsample of the poor sleepers, the lotion improved sleep quality. High Performance Liquid Chromatography of the sleep lotion revealed the presence of 2.4 ± 0.1 mg melatonin/g lotion, or a 0.24 ± 0.01% formulation. Conclusion Caution should be taken by consumers using over-the-counter melatonin lotions because the undisclosed dosage is high and well absorbed by the skin. Mosquito repellent lotions generally use ingredients such as diethyltoluamide (DEET). DEET has been mixed by the manufacture of commercial mosquito repellent lotions and used by consumers without regard to the consequences if it is continuing used. Though many natural plants, especially marine plants can also provide the same benefits as a mosquito repellent. Therefore, in this study the aim was to make a lotion based on seaweed (Sargassum polycystum) and mangrove leaves (Rhizophora apiculata) as a mosquito repellent. The treatments in this study were 30% seaweed (L1), 30% mangrove leaf (L2), 15% seaweed, and 15% mangrove leaf (L3), and control (L0). The results showed that the effectiveness of the protective vover of anti-mosquito lotion S. polycystum (L1) was able to protect for 2 hours, (L2) mangrove leaf lotion was able to protect for 4 hours and S. polycycstum lotion and mangrove leaf R. apiculata (L3) were able to protect for 3 hours
