Before electricity, night was something akin to the deep sea: just as we could not descend much below the water surface, we also could not investigate the night for more than a short distance, and for a short period of time. Things changed with two inventions: the Bathysphere to plumb the ocean floor, and electricity to light the night for sustained exploration. Exploration led to dominance, and night has become indistinguishable from day in many parts of the world. The benefits of electric light are myriad, but so too are the possible detriments of loss of dark at night, including poor sleep, obesity, diabetes, cancer, and mood disorders. Our primordial physiological adaptation to the night and day cycle is being flummoxed by the maladaptive signals coming from electric lighting around the clock. The topic of sleep and health has finally attained scientific respect, but dark and health is not yet fully appreciated.

The chapter begins with a description of the scalar control of PMS motors. The fundamentals of PMS motor vector control (VC) are then presented with an eye on the analogy with DC motor operating principles. The VC of surface-mounted permanent magnet pole motors and interior permanent magnet (IPM) motors are presented in various reference frames. Current and voltage operating limits are incorporated into the control systems. Flux control modes of operation of PMS motors together with the corresponding control means in different reference frames are also presented in detail, as a particular feature of this book. These include maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) control, maximum torque per voltage control, and unity power factor control. Finally, loss minimization control by offline and online strategies is elaborated after presenting the method of motors loss reduction and the PMS motor loss modeling.

Entering beneath the water surface produces a radical change in perceptual challenges. The eye is no longer able to focus adequately and, with increasing depth, light levels decrease and the spectral properties of ambient light narrows with the result that visual resolution decreases rapidly and colour cues are lost. Diving to depth is rapid which means that perceptual challenges change constantly. This results in a paucity of visual information and olfaction and hearing cannot be used to complement this loss. Amphibious foragers must rely upon minimal cues and very specialized foraging behaviours; some ducks may forage for sessile prey using touch sensitivity in the bill, cormorants use a technique in which they trigger an escape response from a fish which they catch at very short range, while penguins and auks may rely upon minimal cues from photophores on fish and random encounters with prey.

Global change caused by human activities has had large consequences for the Earth's biosphere through such effects as climate warming, pollution, loss of biodiversity, unsustainable exploitation of resources, loss of habitats, and alterations to nutrient cycles. These changes have accelerated over the last 50 years as human populations have sharply grown, coupled with unsustainable economic practices. The marine pelagic realm, the habitat for planktonic organisms, is the largest ecological habitat on the planet, occupying 71% of the planetary surface. This chapter focuses on the effects of global changes caused by human activities on marine plankton. It introduces some key concepts of plankton ecology such as the ecological niche concept, plankton succession, and the use of planktonic indicators to monitor these changes.

A noted World War I scholar examines the critical decisions and events that led to Germany's defeat, arguing that the German loss was caused by collapse at home as well as on the front. Much has been written about the causes for the outbreak of World War I and the ways in which the war was fought, but few historians have tackled the reasons why the Germans, who appeared on the surface to be winning for most of the war, ultimately lost. This book, in contrast, presents an in-depth examination of the complex interplay of factors―social, cultural, military, economic, and diplomatic―that led to Germany's defeat. The highly readable work begins with an examination of the strengths and weaknesses of the two coalitions and points out how the balance of forces was clearly on the side of the Entente in a long and drawn-out war. The work then probes the German plan to win the war quickly and the resulting campaigns of August and September 1914 that culminated in the devastating defeat in the First Battle of the Marne. Subsequent chapters discuss the critical factors and decisions that led to Germany's loss, including the British naval blockade, the role of economic factors in maintaining a consensus for war, and the social impact of material deprivation.

Se hace referencia a la gestión de cuencas en México, puntualizando que so- cialmente el país está dividido por 13 Regiones Hidrológicas Administrativas y la manera como están representadas a lo largo y ancho del País. Posteriormente, se hace una descripción detallada del medio físico de la cuenca baja del río Usumacinta, señalando su superficie y los países por donde atraviesa; y que está compuesta por 21 municipios con 34 449.03 km de los cuales el 66 % corres- ponde a Chiapas, 28 % al estado de Tabasco y 6 % al estado de Campeche con un análisis fisiográfico de la cuenca baja del río Usumacinta, su edafología y descripción de los municipios por los que atraviesa, sus principales cultivos y sus actividades agropecuarias. En cuanto a la Presión Antrópica sobre la calidad del agua en la cuenca baja del río Usumacinta, se hace referencia a la importancia y calidad de sus recursos hídricos y los servicios ambientales que ofrecen al ser humano. Se define el pa- pel de la Red de Monitoreo Ambiental de la conagua y a los límites de calidad con referencia a sus principales características fisicoquímicas (O2 disuelto, pH, dbo, nitratos, coliformes, temperatura total). También, se señalan los riesgos y enfermedades por ingerir agua contaminada, haciendo énfasis en la contamina- ción bacteriana ocasionada principalmente por la presencia de la bacteria E. coli (Escherichia coli). También se anota el origen de la contaminación del agua, así como las fuentes puntuales y difusas.
