En lösning som tillåter individer att fortsätta bo i sina hem, trots åldersrelaterade svårigheter, är ett sensorba- serat övervakningssystem. Sådana system kan övervaka ett flertal parametrar, exemåelvis rörelse eller temperatur. Om vissa gränser överskrids kan systemet underrätta anhöriga eller hemtjänsten. Syftet med det här projektet var att bygga en prototyp av ett sådant system, som även skulle vara billig och enkel att installera och underhålla. Den slutgiltiga prototypen består av en rörelsedetektor i badrummet, en temperatursensor vid köksspisen och en sensor som mäter den omgivande temperaturen i ett rum. Varje sensor är kopp- lad till en egen Arduino och de är alla programmerade med olika gränsvärden. Sensorerna kommunicerar trådlöst med en centralenhet genom kommunikationsprotokollet LoRa. När centralenheten, som består av en Raspberry Pi, tar upp en LoRa-signal skickar den ett email till en vald adress.

Повний текст джерелаInternet var i begynnelsen uppbyggt kring nätverk baserade på fysiska kablar, nästa steg för att förbättra tillgängligheten till Internet kom med introduktionen av trådlös kommunikation. Ett nytt begrepp dök upp vid millennieskiftet, Internet of Things (IoT). Tanken bakom IoT är att olika typer av produkter, som exempelvis tandborstar och kylskåp trådlöst kopplas upp mot Internet. Eftersom IoT-produkterna är trådlöst uppkopplade behöver de en intern strömkälla i form av ett batteri. Många av de existerande kommunikationsprotokollen lämpar sig därför inte för IoT-lösningar eftersom dessa är strömkrävande. Alternativ till dessa kommunikationsprotokoll har därför tagits fram, till exempel LTE-M, NB-IoT och LoRaWAN. Studien utfördes i samarbete med Etteplan. Etteplan vill satsa på LoRaWAN och vill därmed få en djupare kunskap inom LoRaWAN. Därmed valdes det att undersöka hur olika faktorer påverkar signalstyrkan och sändningstiden i ett LoRaWAN. Studiens fokus har därmed varit på kommunikationen mellan en IoT-nod och en mottagare i ett LoRaWAN, därmed är studiens syfte: Att visa på hur olika datahastigheter, avstånd och miljöer påverkar kvaliteten på informationen som sänds från en IoT-nod till en mottagare i ett LoRaWAN. Design science research användes som forskningsmetod då i design science research konstrueras en artefakt som att sedan undersöks. I studiens fall konstruerades ett LoRaWAN där sedan kommunikationen mellan en IoT-nod och mottagare i detta LoRaWAN studerades. För att studera kommunikationen mellan en IoT-nod och en mottagare utfördes två experiment. Experimenten utfördes samtidigt där skillnaden låg i datat som samlades in, det ena experimentet samlade in signalstyrkan och den andra sändningstiden. Experimentet utfördes i två olika miljöer, en med fri sikt och en med blockeringar. I experimentet positionerades IoT-noden på olika avstånd med olika datahastigheter. Resultatet från studien visar hur olika datahastigheter, avstånd och miljöer påverkade kvaliteten på informationen mellan en IoT-nod och mottagare och hur de relateras till tidigare forskning. Datahastigheten var den faktorn som påverkade kvaliteten på informationen mest. Datahastigheten hade minimal påverkan på signalstyrkan, men stor påverkan på antal förlorade datapaket och sändningstider. De två olika miljöerna hade ingen påverkan på sändningstiden, men signalstyrkan var över 10 dbm lägre i stadsmiljön än med fri sikt. Avståndet hade ingen påverkan på sändningstiden och minimal påverkan på signalstyrkan.

Повний текст джерелаLong-range radio transmissions open new sensor application fields, in particular for environment monitoring. For example, the LoRa radio protocol enables to connect remote sensors at distance as long as ten kilometers in a line-of-sight. However, the large area covered also brings several difficulties, such as the placement of sensing devices in regard to topology in geography, or the variability of communication latency. Sensing the environment also carries constraints related to the inlerest of sensing points in relation with a physical phenomenon. Thus criteria for designs are evolving a lot from the existing methods, especially in complex terrains. This thesis describes simulation techniques based on geography analysis to compute long-range radio coverages and radio characteristics in these situations. As radio propagation is just a particular case of physical phenomena, it is shown how a unified approach also allows to characterize the behavior of potential physical risks. The case of heavy rainfall and flooding is investigated. Geography analysis is achieved using segmentation tools to produce cellular systems which are in turn translated into code for high-þerformance computations. The thesis provides results from practical complex terrain experiments using LoRa which confirm the accuracy of the simulation, and scheduling characteristics for sample networks. Performance tables are produced for these simulations on current Graphics Processing Units (GPUs)

Повний текст джерелаProjektet har innefattat att ta fram en GPS-spårsändare som kan läsa NFC (Near Field Communication)-taggar, kommunicera med LoRa (Long Range) och BLE (Bluetooth low energy) samt undersöka vilka av GPS-spårsändarens olika delar som konsumerar mest energi. Användningsområdet för GPS-spårsändaren är att effektivisera räddningsinsatser på skadeplatser där det finns skadade människor exempelvis efter en översvämning eller terroristattack. Effektiviseringen är tänkt ska ske genom att en operationsledare styr räddningsinsatsen med hjälp av informationen som skickas från GPS-spårsändarna som kommer att bäras av skadade personer och räddningspersonalen på skadeplatsen. GPS-spårsändaren är utvecklad kring sensorutvecklings kittet Thingy:52 från Nordic Semiconductor och dess mjukvara har utvecklats genom att modifiera den mjukvara som Nordic Semiconductor har utvecklat för Thingy:52. De delar av GPS-spårsändaren som visade sig konsumera mest energi var GPS-modulen och NFC-läsaren. I rapporten finns energioptimerings förslag för dessa delar. Rapporten innehåller även ett förslag till ett kretsschema för GPS-spårsändaren som kan användas vid framtida miniatyrisering av GPS-spårsändaren.

Повний текст джерелаThe Internet of Things (IoT) use cases have increased significantly in recent years. Therefore, new wireless communication technologies are needed that meet the criteria such as low power consumption, long range and low cost. LoRa, which stands for "Long Range", is a wireless communication technology developed by the LoRa Alliance to meet these criteria. The purpose of this paper is to a develop measurement method for performance analysis of the LoRa radio system. The measurement method used to analyze how different parameters such as data rate, distance and different environments affect LoRa network performance parameters i.e. signal strength, packet loss, latency and jitter. To achieve the purpose, a measurement method and prototype were first developed. Then experiments were carried out in two different environments (urban and open space). In each experiment, an IoT node was positioned at different distances and data packets were sent from the IoT node to a gateway with different data rates. The data rate was changed by changing the spreading factor (SF) and bandwidth. Passive measurement method was used to collect measurement data. The method used to analyze the results was the statistical data analysis method since the data collected was quantitative. The result shows that the signal strength is affected by the environment, distance and bandwidth. The signal strength is stronger in free view compared to urban environment. The signal strength is stronger even at shorter distances and greater bandwidth. However, the data rate (SF) has minimal impact on signal strength. The fact that the signal strength is affected by the bandwidth is interesting results that could not be predicted before. The packet loss is affected by the environment, data rate and distance. More data packets go lost at longer distances and in the urban environment. Lower data rate cause to fewer data packets go lost and a longer communication range being achieved. According to earlier work's simulations, it was possible to predict that higher data rates lead to longer communication range, but in this study experiments were carried out on real hardware to investigate the results. Environment, distance and data rate affect the delay. The delay is a few milliseconds longer in urban environment than the free space environment at the same distance. The delay is also a few milliseconds longer at longer distances in the same environment. However, data rate has the greatest impact on the delay. The delay changes by a few hundred milliseconds when the data rate is changed by SF and/or bandwidth. The jitter is not affected by the environment and distance. Data rate (bandwidth and SF) affects the delay variation but this influence is low and can be ignored.

El gran número de nodos que se espera conectar a Internet exige a su vez la implementación a gran escala de Internet Protocol versión 6 (IPv6). IoT busca el desarrollo de nuevas aplicaciones y ha impulsado la creación de nuevas arquitecturas de red y nuevas clases de dispositivos. Las redes Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN) han surgido recientemente como una evolución natural del concepto Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), redes de sensores in- terconectadas. A la luz del IoT, las nuevas redes LPWAN abren un nuevo campo de desarrollo, principalmente enfocado en servicios de monitoreo y afines que se desarrollen en áreas am- plias y no requieran grandes tasas de transferencia. Los dispositivos LPWAN se caracterizan por ser de bajo consumo energético y de bajo costo, facilitando su despliegue masivo por largos períodos sin necesidad de recargar sus baterías. Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) es una de las primeras y principales tec- nologías LPWAN, y presenta una gran flexibilidad que la hace ideal para redes de diseño propio. En América funciona en la banda industrial, científica y médica (ISM) alrededor de los 915 MHz. Sin embargo, también existen muchas otras tecnologías LPWAN con arquitec- turas y protocolos propietarios, lo que dificulta alcanzar la interoperabilidad que se desea en el entorno IoT. El grupo de trabajo para la implementación de IPv6 sobre redes LPWAN (lpwan WG) perteneciente al Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) se encuentra actualmente desarrol- lando un mecanismo de compresión y fragmentación de paquetes IPv6 para redes LPWAN denominado Static Context Header Compression (SCHC). El esquema de compresión se en- cuentra terminado, pero aún no ha sido implementado ni evaluado de manera oficial. En este trabajo se presenta una plataforma experimental para la implementación y eval- uación del mecanismo SCHC sobre una red LoRaWAN consistente en un nodo terminal Mi- crochip y un Radio Gateway (RG) de Everynet. En su desarrollo se han integrado múltiples y diversas herramientas del campo de las Telecomunicaciones y las Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación (ICT). La plataforma creada logra una implementación básica pero exitosa del esquema de com- presión de SCHC. Por medio de ella se ha llevado a cabo una evaluación preliminar del funcionamiento de SCHC, analizando el nivel de compresión logrado por el mecanismo para tres contextos de comunicación característicos de una red LPWAN. Los resultados obtenidos son positivos.

Повний текст джерелаInom Internet of Things (IoT) kommer många applikationer att kräva låg effekt och låg kostnad för att uppnå en lång livstid och skala. Dessa typer av applikationer refereras till som massiv IoT, vilket står i motsats till kritisk IoT som kräver ultrahög tillförlitlighet och tillgänglighet och låg fördröjning. En typ av nätverk som ämnar tillgodose kraven av massiv IoT är Low-Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs), och idag försöker många av dessa hävda sig inom IoT ekosystemet. Detta examensarbete undersöker LPWANs from ett teknisk och icke-tekniskt perspektiv för att utröna deras mångsidighet och påverkan på det framtida telekomlandskapet. Med avseende på spektrum kan de i detta examensarbete undersökta nätverken kategoriseras som olicensierat LPWAN eller licensierat LPWAN. Den tidigare hänvisar typiskt till proprietära lösningar och representeras i detta arbete av SigFox och LoRaWAN. Den senare kategorin består av EC-GSM-IoT, eMTC, och NB-IoT och kan betraktas som synonymt med mobil LPWAN eftersom de designade för att bli integrerade i existerande mobila nätverk. Resultaten indikerar att alla nätverk stödjer applikationer utan strikta krav när det gäller nedlänkens funktionalitet, mängden data per meddelande, och fördröjning. För applikationer utan dessa specifika krav (typiskt sensorer, mätare, spårning, etc.) är det inte en fråga om huruvida ett nätverk uppfyller kraven eller ej, utan snarare hur flexibla kraven är. Därför kommer valet av nätverk att bestämmas av icke-tekniska aspekter och en avvägning mellan kostnad och funktionalitet vari olicensierat LPWAN är vanligtvis billigare. Därmed erbjuder båda kategorier av nätverk en unik värde proposition och kan därför betraktas som komplementerande. Denna föreställning är förstärkt av att nätverken skiljer sig signifikant när det gäller deras icke-tekniska aspekter såsom ekosystem, reglering, ägandeskap och kontroll, och nätverks koordinering. Dessutom är olicensierade LPWANs troligen är förtruppen av en ny typ av konkurrent som erbjuder den grundläggande servicen av konnektivitet.

Повний текст джерелаThe progress in low-energy, low-cost communication technologies have revolutionized remote sensing and monitoring applications. Internet of Things (IoT) has promised an ecosystem of connected devices across a wide range of applications such as in smart cities.Currently, many competing standards and technologies are attempting to seize the IoT, particularly in the area of remote sensing and communication technologies. LoRa (Long Range) is one of those technologies that is gaining popularity and attraction in the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) applications. The ability to make long-distance communications with relatively simple nodes, minimal infrastructure, reduced power requirements, and the use of unlicensed ISM bands provides a significant competitive advantage. Although the communication range in LoRa can exceed 15 kilometers in line of sight, the maximum bit rate that can be achieved is limited to few kilobits per second. Additionally, when a collision occurs in LoRa, the throughput is further reduced due to frame losses and retransmissions. The work of this thesis deals with the problem of collisions in LoRa that may occur under heavy load, and which degrade the performance of the network.First, we consider the context for LoRaWAN uplink communications. We study the context of fully synchronized colliding LoRa signals, where each end-device has to retransmit its entire colliding frame after a collision occurs in LoRa. This behavior decreases the overall throughput, and increases the energy consumption of the end-devices, and the delay of the frames. Therefore, in order to mitigate the damaging effects of collisions, we proposed a decoding algorithm to resolve synchronized colliding LoRa signals, in a saturated and confirmed network traffic. We substituted the conventional retransmission model of LoRa by having end-devices transmitting bitmaps instead of retransmitting whole frames to determine the correct symbols of each colliding frame. Our algorithm was able to significantly improve the overall throughput of the LoRaWAN MAC layer based on LoRa, and to decrease the energy consumption of the transmitters and the delay of the frames.Second, we consider the context for LoRaWAN downlink communications. We noticed that the downlink in LoRa is a bottleneck. Hence, we worked on the gateway selection by the network server and its impact on the throughput, the energy consumption and the delay. We studied three types of gateway deployment and we show that the system performance depends on this deployment. We showed that balancing the number of end-devices per gateway (also known as load) improves the throughput compared to choosing the gateway with the highest signal quality. Moreover, we showed that combining load and signal quality does not further improve the throughput. In addition, we showed that choosing the gateway with the highest signal quality decreases the delay and energy consumption compared to choosing the gateway with the lowest load

Повний текст джерелаIn this dissertation, we consider performance aspects of LoRa, one of the promisingtechnologies for lightweight smart sensors for the Internet of Things (IoT). LoRa belongs to a new class of Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) networks and defines a specificradio layer based on the Chirp Spread Spectrum modulation and a simple MediumAccess Control called LoRaWAN. The operation of LoRaWAN is similar to ALOHA: adevice wakes up and sends a packet to a Gateway right away. This choice of the accessmethod highly impacts the capacity of LoRa and its scalability to a large number ofdevices. It results in a high level of packet losses due to collisions as the number ofdevices increases.Motivated by these challenges, we have designed and implemented enhanced access methods to improve LoRa performance. First, we have taken advantage of CarrierSense Multiple Access (CSMA) to lower the collision ratio. We have used the NS-3 simulator to evaluate the scheme and the simulation results show that CSMA considerablylowers the collision ratio while only slightly increasing energy consumption. Second, wehave proposed Timemaps, a new access method for improving the performance of LoRa.The idea is to build a temporal map of all transmissions of IoT devices by a Gatewayand distribute the schedule during join. Schedules admit overlapping transmissions ofdifferent spreading factors and as devices usually allocate a spreading factor in functionof the increasing distance from the Gateway, transmissions will be in fact orthogonal,which leads to increased overall capacity of the network.We have used the NS-3 simulator to evaluate Timemaps in both cases of perfect clocks and clocks with a drift.The simulation takes into account quasi-orthogonality of transmissions with differentspreading factors and the capture effect. The results show that Timemaps benefitsfrom remarkably higher packet delivery ratio and considerably lower the collision ratiocompared to LoRaWAN along with moderately increased energy consumption.To validate both schemes we have developed an NS-3 module that simulates thefine-grain LoRa operation. The module uses an energy framework implemented in NS-3to estimate energy consumption at battery powered nodes and in the whole network

Повний текст джерелаO conceito de Smart City surge da combinação do paradigma de Internet of Things (IoT) sobre contextos urbanos aliado à exploração de soluções de Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação (TIC). O típico cenário de Smart City tem de lidar com desafios, tais como as elevadas quantidades de sensores e geradores de dados, dos quais alguns são colocados em dispositivos de grande mobilidade, visando a recolha e geração de todo o tipo de informações e levando ao aumento do número de dispositivos comunicantes. Esta dissertação foca o desenvolvimento e implementação de uma plataforma heterogénea de sonorização ambiental com o objectivo de servir de infraestrutura para aplicações no âmbito das Smart Cities. Esta pretende tirar proveito da utilização de múltiplas tecnologias de comunicação, nomeadamente tecnologias de longo e curto alcance. Para al em disto, visto que a plataforma visa ambientes urbanos, esta tira proveito de uma rede oportunista e tolerante a atrasos, Delay Tolerant Network (DTN), através de entidades m oveis que circulam pela cidade, nomeadamente bicicletas. Assim sendo, esta dissertação propõe: (1) o desenho e desenvolvimento da rede e dos seus constituintes; (2) uma extensão a um protocolo de controlo de acesso ao meio, Medium Access Control (MAC), para a tecnologia LoRa com o objectivo de o dotar compatível para ambientes de gateways múltiplas; (3) novas estratégias de encaminhamento para a rede tolerante a atrasos, tendo em consideração a topologia e as características apresentadas por esta. As avaliações realizadas permitiram concluir que o protocolo MAC para LoRa em ambientes de gateways múltiplas proposto contribui para um aumento da escalabilidade da rede, bem como para uma melhoria do seu desempenho. Relativamente às estratégias de encaminhamento propostas para a DTN, os testes realizados permitiram avaliar o impacto que cada estratégia tem sobre o comportamento da rede, nomeadamente a taxa de entrega dos pacotes de dados, a sobrecarga da rede, o número de pacotes transmitidos, entre outros. Com estes resultados foi possível perceber as in- suficiências que as funcionalidades propostas têm sobre a solução geral, e identificar as caraterísticas necessárias de uma solução escalável para a recolha de dados massivos num ambiente de IoT.
The Smart City concept is the combination of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm under an urban context with the exploitation of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) solutions. The typical Smart City scenario has to deal with an extensive amount of sensors and data generators, some of them placed in high mobile devices, deployed to collect and generate all type of information which will increase the number of communicating machines. This dissertation focuses on the development and implementation of a heterogeneous environmental sensing platform to serve as an infrastructure for Smart City applications. It aims to take advantage of the use of multiple communication technologies, namely long and short range. Being within an urban environment, the platform bene ts from an opportunistic and Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) through mobile entities that travel over the city, such as bicycles. Therefore, this dissertation proposes: (1) the design and development of the network and its elements; (2) an extension to a LoRa Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol in order to endow it with capabilities to operate in multi-gateway environments; and lastly, (3) new forwarding strategies for the opportunistic network that takes into consideration the network topology. The performed evaluations showed that the proposed multi-gateway LoRa MAC protocol contributes to increase the LoRa network scalability, as well as its performance. The performed tests to the proposed DTN forwarding strategies evaluate the impact of each strategy on the network behavior, namely the delivery ratio, network overhead, number of transmitted packets, among others. As a result, it is possible to perceive which are the in- uences introduced by the proposed functionalities on the overall solution, and identify the characteristics of a scalable solution to collect massive data in an IoT environment.

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis deals with the problem of guaranteeing heterogeneous quality of service (QoS) requirements for Internet of Things (IoT) communications in terms of urgency and reliability. Various solutions are proposed towards achieving this goal in LoRa Wide Area Networks (LoRaWAN). First, we implement network slicing over LoRa standard architecture and evaluate its impact using various static and dynamic strategies. Simulation Results performed over NS3 proved the efficiency of network slicing in isolating physical resources for each slice and serving delay critical communications. Motivated by these results, a slice-based optimization is proposed next to improve the dynamic slicing strategy by investigating more LoRa parameters at the physical layer. The proposed method finds for each device the best parameters configuration that potentially improves the performance of its slice in terms of QoS, reliability and energy efficiency. Moreover, we also looked towards meeting upcoming challenges in future IoT networks that comes from the increasing number of IoT devices. Even with network slicing, LoRa scalability remained as a big challenge that should be carefully considered especially due to the lack of flexibility in managing current wireless networks. Therefore, to meet the global objective in guaranteeing QoS in large scale IoT deployments, software defined networking (SDN) and network slicing are adopted as backbone technologies for a distributed virtualized architecture and slicing strategy. The latter proposition is based on game theory and adapts faster to the changes in a congested IoT environment by leveraging slicing decision making closer to the edge

Повний текст джерелаWireless sensing has evolved since the discovery of radio wave echo detection and radar in 1886. Analyzing electromagnetic reflections from objects opened the way for a wide range of applications spanning from locating long-range targets for navigation and military to monitoring wind and precipitation for weather-forecasting to velocity detection for public safety. However, for the longest time, its usefulness was seldom for human-centric applications because of technical limitations, impracticality or costliness. Introducing wireless networks awakened a newfound interest in developing new wireless sensing services for their seamlessness and versatility. Integrating such functionalities would contribute to resolving some prominent societal issues. Localization, motion detection, and vital signs monitoring have great potential for promoting healthy aging, public safety, and retail. Contactless sensing offers an appreciable degree of freedom, enabling remote monitoring of the isolated elderly without hampering their daily lives. It could assist public safety services for crowd counting and detection of survivors inside buildings during emergencies. Retail and public facilities would benefit from passive and active localization to offer an enhanced experience to their visitors and to help their logistical efforts. This thesis addresses the problem of leveraging commercial off-the-shelf wireless networks for sensing applications: One challenge for wireless monitoring is to detect the attitude of a person accurately. While other works provide coarse-grained solutions for resolving such issues, we use MIMO radar techniques to provide an accurate orientation estimation system for Wi-Fi infrastructures. To be more precise, we analyze the phase information of signals received on the antenna array to compute the heading of a Wi-Fi terminal. A second challenge is to provide an accurate positioning system for LPWAN systems to maintain the information consistency of deployed sensors. Current solutions are complex, costly, or not energy-efficient. To address this problem, we introduce MIMO capabilities to LoRa LPWAN systems that provide accurate localization with limited startup costs. We enable the angle of arrival estimation by leveraging a second antenna on the LoRaWAN gateway. We also prove the usefulness of such information for wireless communication efficiency. A third challenge for wireless localization is the inefficiency of current model-based approaches in case of non-line-of-sight conditions and the rigidity of data-driven approaches in case of propagation environment changes. To address this challenge, we propose a new data-driven solution for passive localization to address the limitations of model-based localization techniques. To give life to such systems and provide them with a chance of impacting our everyday lives, we should promote reusability and reproducibility. For that, we focus on the challenge of reproducibility in wireless networking by surveying the current state, performing a case study, and presenting the engendered lessons

Повний текст джерелаThe Internet of Things (IoT) is an enabler to new applications, such as smart metering and environmental monitoring, intended to address current and future societal and ecological challenges. Things, possibly mobile or in distant locations, require wireless connectivity for data collection and remote control. Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) networks provide city-scale long-range, narrowband radio transmissions respecting the energy constraints of battery-powered low-cost objects. Being capable to localize these objects will add value to their data, enables tracking applications and is therefore a demanded and recent research topic. Precise and accurate radio signal delay based positioning without integrating additional hardware but taking advantage of intrinsic wireless communication signals is appealing in terms of device complexity, cost and energy consumption. However, radio localization within LPWA networks is challenging due to narrowband transmissions, resulting in a lack of delay precision as well as due to radio propagation channels, which degrade the accuracy of location estimates. This work addresses both challenges by investigating a multi-channel ranging system for LPWA networks. Coherently combining multiple sequentially transmitted narrowband signals on different radio channels improves delay estimation precision and allows resolving multipath channels for refined positioning accuracy. This scheme, based on instantaneous narrowband signals, conserves the LPWA long-range feature and is hence compatible with LPWA networks. A detailed signal model considering hardware imperfections as well as the required protocol exchanges for time, frequency and phase synchronization is developed. Based on this model, the requirements on radio transceiver architectures regarding the necessary phase coherence for multi-channel ranging are discussed. Lower bounds on the ranging precision are derived for both, free-space and multipath propagation channels, illustrating the improved precision compared to narrowband single channel ranging. Numerical simulations of radio signals for the two-way multi-channel ranging protocol illustrate that the performance of developed range estimators attains the theoretical precision bound and pave the way towards implementation. A flexible Software Defined Radio (SDR) based demonstrator is implemented to validate simulation results. Field trials in real urban outdoor environments are in accordance with simulation results and prove how scalable multi-channel ranging, in combination with advanced signal processing methods, will be an enabler towards precise and accurate localization in LPWA networks

Повний текст джерелаTheories from collaborative and egocentric views of language research have been elaborated to explain adjustments in verbal productions when a speaker interacts with an addressee. These theories are in conflict on the view proposing that perspective-taking occurs during the initial planning of the verbal production, allowing the speaker to meet the real needs of the addressee. The current project addresses this issue with two experiments, both utilizing the same experimental design. The task in this study was developed to differentiate between different types of adjustment (i.e. adjustments based on different sources of information). Results suggest that speakers first produce information that they themselves know and subsequently add information when needed. Overall, speakers were collaborative and adjusted their speech in a second stage during the interaction to meet the addressee’s real needs. This adjustment occurred early in the interaction, and particularly when speakers could rely on a heuristic of prototypical knowledge about their addressee. Under certain circumstances though (for instance, when meeting an addressee with extremely limited knowledge), speakers took into account their real addressee’s needs and introduced the stimuli with the most relevant information, but specifically when this addressee was met before an addressee with more prototypical knowledge.

Повний текст джерелаLa fonction la plus évidente de la phéromone sexuelle de G. viridula est l’induction du comportement sexuel mâle. Cet « aphrodisiaque », probablement constitué de plusieurs composés cuticulaires (des alcanes méthylés lourds), est émis par la femelle et déclenche par contact la sortie de l’édéage des mâles. Etonnamment, ces composés se retrouvent aussi chez les mâles de G. viridula dont le comportement sexuel est alors induit au contact de composés cuticulaires mâles. Ceci constituerait la cause proximale des comportements homosexuels observés chez les mâles de G. viridula. Nous avons ensuite étudié le rôle des composés cuticulaires dans l’isolement sexuel entre G. viridula et G. cyanea. Le comportement sexuel des mâles des deux espèces est en effet induit préférentiellement par les femelles conspécifiques. Pour G. viridula, cette préférence est visiblement attribuable aux composés cuticulaires. Enfin, les signaux chimiques sont parfois indicateurs du degré de compétition spermatique rencontré par un mâle et permettent à celui-ci d’ajuster la quantité de spermatozoïdes transmis à une femelle. Avant d’étudier l’implication de tels signaux chez G. viridula, nous avons souhaité mettre en évidence un ajustement de la quantité de spermatozoïdes transmis par des mâles soumis à divers degrés de compétition spermatique. Nos résultats ne nous permettent malheureusement pas de signaler un tel effet.

Naturalistic observation of infants spontaneous behaviour would allow to lead to obviousness the evolution of exchanges between peers during the first year of life. 36 infants, of three age-group, were video-taped in a day-nursery, in sama age dyads, at 6 months, 9 months and 12 months. A first descriptive and classifying stage of behaviours leads to the construction of a detailed ethogram, which items are regrouped in operational categories. During a second stage, correspondance analysis shows a link between multidimensional data, as well as behavioural oppositions connected with each age group. It appears that evolution of exchanges between peers is closely correlated with the stages of psychomotor development. Analysis will be done through distance behaviours, physical contact, extracommunicative behaviours and effects of toy presence

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis deals with the methods of learning and criticizing the rules of public communication by student representatives during the student strike in 2012 in Quebec. Taking into account the particular characteristics of student organizations and the conditions in which student representatives learn the rudiments of the roles of press officer and spokesperson, this paper proposes to study the modalities of learning and criticism of rules of public communication. New actors who do not benefit from the same human and financial resources as government and media actors, but with whom they publicly debated during the 2012 student strike. How did they learn the rules of public communication in an intense and animated public debate which subsequently degenerated into a social crisis? As a result of the 2012 experience, these individuals became much more known and recognized, and gained notoriety. We want to understand how the different ways of learning about the rules of public communication depend on the particular environment and the context in which the student representatives were at that time. We also want to focus on the content of learning and criticism to better understand what kinds of rules are learned and what are their strategic functions. The research is based on a qualitative interview analysis of the public affair program 24 heures en 60 minutes, on RDI, and a series of semi-conducted interviews with student representatives. Повний текст джерелаOver the years, growing concerns for the environment have increased discourse regarding the problems and solutions to environmental crises. Messages in popular culture have implications for public perceptions of the environment and, as a result, impact how we interact with and understand our natural surroundings. While we understand the impact of rhetorical strategies in a general sense, research is needed when exploring how speaker credibility influences environmental messages.
This thesis explores two concepts: how credibility impacts environmental messages and the concept of speaking for the environment. I explore these concepts through a media-centered rhetorical criticism of the film, The Lorax (2012). I analyze seven selected scenes, drawing on McCroskey’s (1966) scale of ethos and Spangle and Knapp’s (1996) study of tactics and appeals. The analysis reveals several tactics used by the two main characters, the Lorax and Once-ler, to establish their credibility. How the Lorax and Once-ler establish or fail to establish credibility impacts the future state of the environment. Ethos is a key communication concept in speaking for the environment, as the way we speak and represent the environment has consequences for how we interact with the natural world.

Повний текст джерелаInteractive skills quality of autistic child depends on the contexts (Clarck & Rutter, 1985, Mirenda & Donelan, 1986, Curcio & Paccia, 1996; Lacaze &, Rogé, 1999). The objective of this study is testing hypothesis about the influence of interactive and situational context on social engagement of persons with autism. We did through two studies including adults partners, professional or not and persons with Pervasive Developmental Disorders who are videotaped in dyadic interaction during free versus structured situations. Behavioral profile were analysed using a typological and a sequential approach. Results suggest differential behavioral caregiver strategies depend of their interactive styles. Specifically interactive styles have an influence on communication quality and mutual adjustment of autistic children, whatever the aim of the interactive situation. Issues are discussed in clinical and theoretical perspectives, notably on the frame of pragmatic. Implications for further research and educational practice are suggested

We analyze how the modes of dramatized oral reading by adult constitutes the first mode of interpretative reading which gives the children access to an understanding of the stories. We show how these "dialogued narrative restatements" constitute the way in which the children access the understanding of the stories and the joint construction of interpretations, which will provide the development of their linguistic skills. Due to complexity and variety in their semiotic styles, familiarization with written stories is problematic for children. We assume that dialogues allow pre-reading children to build a methodology for the interpretation. This interpretive co-operation finds its effectiveness only thanks to the co-shoring of the ideas by the adult and the peers

Повний текст джерелаSpeech communication can be considered as an interactive process involving afunctional coupling between sensory and motor systems. The aim of this thesis was to test possible perceptuo-motor linkages during both speech perception and production, using distinct behavioral paradigms and populations. The experimental protocol was made of three classic experiments: a first paradigm of close-shadowing, aiming at exploring the partially motor format of audio and audiovisual stimuli; a second paradigm allowing to correlate production and perception of vowels; and a third paradigm of conscious and unconscious imitation of pitch. The experimental protocol was validated with a first group of young hearing adults. The second population studied was composed of elderly normal-hearing participants, in order to evaluate the consequences of both cognitive and linguistic declines. Results allowed us to suggest a functional activation of perceptuo-motor linkage during speech production and perception.The third population we tested comprised post-lingually deaf patients wearing acochlear implant. Our objective was to determine the impact of the sensorial deprivation and the re-learning processes, associated with their implantation, on perceptuo-motor linkages. Unexpectedly, results showed an active sensori-motor relationship in those participants, even shortly after the cochlear implantation. Altogether, our results confirmed the perceptuo-motor nature of speech. Importantly, in spite of degraded performances, these interactions between the sensory and the motor systems during speech production and perception remained functional in both the elderly normal-hearing population and the post-lingually deaf patients, wearing a cochlear implant

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis is devoted to the usefulness of intangible assets disclosure by French listed companies around new equity issues and its impact on stock liquidity. The growing importance of intangibles for companies' competitiveness and growth, besides of their non-recognition often raises the question of the need to complete financial statements by intangible assets voluntary disclosure. Accounting and finance literature shows changes in external users' information needs and highlights their attention for information related to intangibles. Insufficient communication on these assets accentuates information asymmetry in financial markets. It provides also a fertile ground for wealth transfer from uninformed investors to informed investors, as by exploiting private information, they can derive higher returns at the expense of other investors. This situation leads to a decrease in stock liquidity, and therefore to an increase of companies' cost of capital, which becomes more important around equity issues. The study conducted on a sample of French listed companies issuing new equity over the period 2000-2009 shows a low level of intangibles voluntary disclosure. Furthermore, our analysis shows that intangibles voluntary disclosure reduces spread, and increases market depth at the announcement of a capital increase

Повний текст джерелаThrough an interdisciplinary approach, this thesis combines developmental psychology and neuropsychology, to analyze the executive function deficit in combined-type Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disordered (ADHD) children. For this purpose, two developmental and comparative studies are conducted. In the referential communication paradigm, the subject's descriptions and comprehensions concerning visual material are analyzed. A series of non-verbal tasks taken from the neuropsychological battery CANTAB are also applied. The results to the verbal referential task reveal that ADHD children have a cognitive control deficit and develop inefficient strategies. The results from the non-verbal tasks indicate a motor inhibition deficit and difficulties in retaining information in working memory. An interdisciplinary perspective to the study of ADHD is provided by comparing the results to the verbal and non verbal tasks

Повний текст джерелаCes expériences participatives peuvent être classées selon deux dimensions clés, soit la dimension de participation sous forme d’échange d’information (p.ex., poser des questions) et la participation sous forme d’affirmation (p.ex., exprimer son point de vue). Pour chacune de ces dimensions, les patients discutent également de deux types de participation. Lorsque le patient initie cette participation, il s’agit de participation proactive, tandis que lorsque le médecin invite le patient à participer, il s’agit de participation réactive. Les patients discutent également d’expériences non-participatives, quoique ces expériences sont plus rares. En ce qui a trait aux particularités ethniques et ethnolinguistiques, ces minorités discutent moins fréquemment d’expériences participatives et attribuent ces difficultés de participation à des facteurs linguistiques, tels que la barrière linguistique et à leur identité ethnolinguistique. En conclusion, les minorités ethniques et ethnolinguistiques semblent faire face à des barrières additionnelles qui peuvent poser entrave à une bonne communication et à une participation active en consultation. Il importe de s’intéresser à ces barrières additionnelles, car il se peut que celles-ci expliquent, en partie, les inégalités de santé affectant ces groupes minoritaires. Un Modèle contextualisé de la participation des patients est présenté et discuté, afin de contextualiser les expériences des patients.
Physician-patient communication is a central element in care and a good communication is linked to several health benefits for the patient. However, communication difficulties persist in medical encounters and these difficulties are more present in consultations with ethnic and ethnolinguistic minorities. Previous literature on physician-patient communication present some limitations that restrict our understanding of communication difficulties. In order to improve care, patients’ experiences of this communication must be understood. The first article inserted in this doctoral dissertation consists of a systematic review and meta-ethnography of qualitative studies exploring patients’ experiences of communication with primary care physicians. Three concepts emerged from analyses: negative experiences, positive experiences and outcomes of communication. Most studies in this review did not explore ethnic and ethnolinguistic aspects, but the few studies which did show that ethnic and ethnolinguistic minorities face additional barriers that exert mainly a negative influence on patients’ experiences of communication, namely, language barriers and discrimination. This review illustrates the pertinence of exploring patients’ experiences, with different ethnic and ethnolinguistic backgrounds, with qualitative methods, in order to gain a deep understanding of their perspective. Ensuing from this observation, the doctoral study was developed to explore in detail patients’ experiences of communication. During the interviews, it became apparent that patient participation was a central theme to describe patients’ experiences of communication with physicians. Since an inductive approach was chosen, the emerging objective of this study was to explore patients’ experiences of participation in the medical consultation with physicians. Moreover, we aimed to explore nuances in these experiences of participation according to patients’ ethnic and ethnolinguistic background. Findings show that patient participation is a central theme to describe experiences of communication. Five themes emerged in response to the first objective and these themes are organized in two key dimensions: a) participation in terms of information exchange and b) participation in terms of assertiveness. Across these themes, two types of participation emerged: proactive participation (i.e. patient initiated) and responsive participation (i.e. physician initiated). Patients also discussed experiences of non-participation; however, these were less common. Ethnolinguistic minorities discussed less participative experiences and attributed these difficulties to language barriers and to their ethnolinguistic identity. In conclusion, ethnic and ethnolinguistic minorities seem to face additional barriers which exert mostly a negative influence on their experiences of communication and participation. In turn, these difficulties may engender negative consequences for the patients’ health, thus partly explaining health inequities affecting these minority groups. A contextual model of patient participation is presented and discussed to contextualize patients’ experiences of communication and participation.

Повний текст джерелаA long history of research has shown the interest organizations have for employees’ fairness reactions to procedures used towards them. Truxillo, Steiner and Gilliland (2004) concluded for example, that the fairness perceptions of organizational procedures could have effects on the attraction for this organization and action intentions. Studies conducted in the field of procedural justice have highlighted several factors which facilitate the perception of fairness, as for example the voice given to individuals, that is the possibility of expressing their opinion during this procedure, the validity of the procedure, and the information given to employees. More recently researchers (e. G. , Van de Bos, 2001a) have suggested that participants in situations of uncertainty attach more importance to these factors than less uncertain participants, but none of these studies was conducted during the selection process. Through seven experiments, we studied the effects of job applicants’ uncertainty on their fairness reactions during selection procedures : interview, ability test and personality test. Overall, our results shows that face validity and voice increase the perception of fairness. In contrast, uncertainty has a negative influence on people’s judgments of justice. Results also show that giving participants a reassuring information can moderate these negative effects of uncertainty on fairness reactions
