"Good leadership springs from a genuine passion for the work and a genuine concern for other people. Great Leaders are people who love what they do and want to share that love with others. " (Daft, 2005:20). During an informal discussion with my husband Hugo Daniels, the leader in this Action Research Case Study, it became apparent that lawyers do not attend a single module or complete a single subject during their formal training at university to obtain their law degree that is related to the field of leadership and how to lead, inspire and motivate followers. The discussion centered on the problems the leader was experiencing in his East London law firm, problems he believed to be as a result of his lack of knowledge in the field of leadership. And so this research project began. It was obvious from the start that to intervene in the firm in order to bring about change would need the participation of everyone in the firm. The first step towards facilitating change would be to change the leadership style of the director of the firm. He would be required to gain knowledge in the field of leadership and the effects that different leadership styles have on followers. At the same time staff's perception of the current leadership style would have to be determined, as well as the desired style for their leader. The research process could then begin, based on the needs expressed by the staff and with participation from all levels in the firm. The case involved 27 members of staff made up of three heads of departments, twenty three general staff members and the leader. Data was gathered through formal interviews with the leader and the heads of departments, as well as from personal journals kept by two heads of departments and the leader. General staff members were first asked to complete The Productive Practice Survey (Hall 1987) to determine their perceptions of the current leadership style in the firm and what they thought they needed from their leader if the firm is to move forward. The Productive Practice Survey (Hall 1987) was not used with the intention of gathering quantitative data, but rather as a means of gathering information of staff's perception in general while ensuring anonymity, so as to facilitate a discussion during a feedback session. The Productive Survey's (Hall 1987) content and working is explained in further detail in Chapter 3 on page 44. Initially participants were skeptical of the process and used the survey as a medium to lash out against the firm and Hugo Daniels as a leader, leaving no room for suggestions for improvement, an "it is what it is" approach. During the feedback session general staff members became more open when they realized that change would benefit them, as changes would be suggested by them and implemented with their participation. They became less reluctant about change and provided valuable input during the session. All participants understood that this Participatory Action Research intervention was only the beginning of change in the firm and the sustainability of the changes rests on the firm as a whole, and working towards it would be a continuous process not ending with the Participatory Action Research process.

Tran, Quan. "A study of chief executive officer (CEO) turnover in Vietnam : the link between firm performance and CEO turnover." Thesis, Cardiff Metropolitan University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10369/6412.

In general, CEO turnover has been researched widely following numerous studies in developed countries. Nevertheless, the determinants of CEO turnover are still unclear in transition countries of which the legal and regulatory framework are weak and financial systems and corporate governance are underdeveloped. Therefore, examining determinants of CEO turnover in Vietnam, a transition country, helps to provide more evidence on the efficiency and effectiveness of corporate governance in transition countries. Furthermore, the examination helps to define weaknesses, and it, therefore, could provide guidance to improve corporate governance in Vietnamese enterprises. Particularly, the thesis investigates the CEO turnover in Vietnam following the research philosophy of positivism paradigms and deductive approach. Further, it implied logistics regression in order to evaluate the influences of factors on CEO turnover in Vietnamese-listed enterprises. The sample of the thesis, including 156 listed firms at the end of 2006 in Hanoi and HoChiMinh Securities Centres, 780 firm-year observations have been conducted. Among 780 observations, there are 88 CEO turnovers occurred during the observed period from 2006 to 2010. The main findings of the thesis show that firm performance had significant inverse relationship with the likelihood of CEO turnover. Meanwhile, the influence of ownership structure on CEO turnover was insignificant. Interestingly, aged CEOs in Vietnamese-listed enterprises were more likely to be dismissed than young CEOs. Additionally, the probability of CEO turnover significantly increased when CEOs reached the ages of 59-61. The certain age also reduced the influence of CEO duality on CEO turnover. Together, CEO ownership negatively influenced the sensitivities of the link between firm performance and CEO turnover, although the influence is insignificant when CEOs own less than 5% of firm shares. Importantly, the thesis provides the significant and positive relationship between the percentage of independent directors and CEO turnover. Based on those findings, the thesis concludes that the efficiency of corporate governance and effectiveness of management are able to improve by increasing the independence of the Board of Management rather than other factors.

The pace at which change is occurring in the life of human beings, due to technological advancement, could be described as logarithmic. This fast-paced change is not just of consequence to the individual, but to countries, governments, companies, big and small systems like villages and sports clubs and the like, as well. This study case was inspired by the fact that what was a little-known threat yesterday, could suddenly become a crippling matter. It is, therefore, critical for individuals and businesses to consider risk not just in the usual context but with an open mind. This is especially true for systems in the Third World or developing nations where evolutionary stages of advancement and development are known to have been skipped due to forced or influenced adoption by the advanced or First World dictates. An example is the adoption of Carbon Emission Minimisa tion Pacts that have also been mooted for developing nations, even though their participation in causing the past Industrial Revolution pollution was minimal. A small operation in the Eastern Cape may, today, see no need to attract an overseas customer, not realising that the local customer may enter a merger or be bought out by an international organisation which would demand international protocols on the local supplier. Such is the risk with Globalisation. Local businesses should embrace global competitive practices for sustainability in the global business arena that is surely upon the business place today and the short term. South African businesses are no longer protected by the country borders, or the government and political systems such as the apartheid-born sanctions and tariff regimes. The objective of this study of Legionella bacteria risk management by business firms in the Eastern Cape (East London and Border Areas) is to obtain an insight into how they fare on one of the risks that, in Europe, is legislated and, in many parts of the First World, is regarded as fundamental. Beside the globalisation issues mentioned above, the South African workforce has been noted as highly affected by HIV and TB, which are symptomatic of people susceptible to Legionnaire‟s Disease. The high cost and skills shortage in the South African industry demand great care in order to prevent further loss, due to sick absenteeism or the death of workers. The study included a comprehensive literature review of issues around Legionella bacteria in industrial operations and how ill effects could be prevented and managed. A questionnaire was then drawn up and used to check for awareness, capability and ascertain what motivational factors could influence Legionella risk management by businesses in the geographical study area. All businesses with facilities utilising water cooling towers, safety showers, waste water treatment plants, humidifier air conditioning and water fountains, were presented with the questionnaire. A 56 percent return was achieved and responses were processed and analysed using Microsoft Excel on a Windows XP computer package. The findings showed that there was a poor awareness of Legionella bacteria and the risk they posed, a factor that may be used to explain the poor questionnaire returns. The capability assessment also showed a weak status. Legislation, proof of outbreak and fines were determined as effective would-be motivators for full Legionella risk management. The study concluded with recommendations for awareness programmes by interested bodies like the Legionella Action Group, Department of Labour and companies providing Legionella consulting services. While legislation and, therefore, fines, were not yet applied in South Africa, the drive for employee and community welfare should be adequate motivating factors for businesses to manage Legionella risk. Foreign capital inflow into the South African economy was also a factor that should be considered by businesses that looked to expand and need to access these funds through mergers or acquisitions. These funds would require financial as well as technical audits that show adequate risk protection.

Set within the context of the London 2012 Olympic Games, this thesis seeks to give an empirical account of regulators' behaviour and perspective of small firms in order to understand the relationship between regulators and small firms. Typically, research of the regulator-small firm relationship concentrates on the perspective of small firms, with some studies claiming regulation, and by extension regulators, to be an overt burden on business, particularly small firms (e.g. Sommers and Cole, 1985; Fairmann and Yapp, 2005). Recently the debate has intensified by the contributions of authors who have suggested that regulation and the entities that deliver it both constrain and enable businesses (e.g. Edwards, et al., 2004; Kitching, et al., 2015). The findings of this research form an in-depth case study, drawn from seventeen in-depth interviews with policy makers, regulatory managers, and enforcement officers, which furthers current knowledge of the largely overlooked 'other-side' of the debate on regulation and small firms. The study explores the challenges faced by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), and other organisations in the Olympic regulatory constellation, when implementing and enforcing the new Olympic legislation; that included the most legally powerful advertising and trading regulations ever enacted in the UK. Research prior to the Games (e.g. James and Osborn, 2011a; 2011b; 2012) only considered the formal wording of the new legislation, e.g. the London Olympic Paralympic Games Act, leading to speculation that the ODA would take a heavy-handed enforcement approach to their engagements with local businesses. Contrastingly, the findings here demonstrate that despite the influence of such far-reaching legislation, managers and enforcement officers at the ODA often chose a discretionary approach in dealing with infringements. While the notion that regulators use discretion in enforcement is not new (see Baldwin, et al., 2000), this thesis has shown why such instances of informal regulatory practice occurred alongside (and despite) the formalisation introduced by the written regulations. Despite the formal omnipotence of the Olympic advertising and trading regulations, the human factor was noted as the key determinant of the balancing act between formal and informal interactions within the regulatory constellation, and in subsequent engagements with businesses. Furthermore, the findings of this research highlight that despite having different legislative environments, the social worlds of London 2012 and the everyday (business-as-usual) were not separate - they overlapped. Therefore, as regulators crossed over to the social world of the Games, social norms that informed their normal, everyday behaviour, as well as an obligation to endorse and enforce those norms, crossed over with them and affected their behaviour and perspective in their engagements with small firms. Additionally, linked to that collective sense of endorsing and enforcing everyday norms at London 2012, regulators' conceptions of both their organisational identity and self-identity played a significant part in them not always adhering to the formal prescriptions of the Olympic legislation. By shedding light on the mixture of formal and informal practices used by regulators, the thesis has contributed towards a better understanding of regulators' behaviour and thus has enriched the debate of the impact of regulation on small firms. For example, it was noted that ODA managers and enforcement officers typified local small firms in terms of their likelihood to be non-compliant, or engage in problematic activities during Games Time, adjusting the regulatory relationship with those deemed to be higher risk businesses. Such adjustments to the regulatory relationship with those businesses has implications not only to regulators and the way they operate but naturally to the small firms in question as well.

Bear, Daniel. "Adapting, acting out, or standing firm : understanding the place of drugs in the policing of a London borough." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2013. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/894/.

Анотація:
The number of police recorded incidents in England and Wales involving cannabis more than doubled between 2004 and 2009 even though use of the drug was in decline and official policy was geared towards tackling drugs ‘that cause most harm’(Home Office 2008). Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork carried out in a single London borough during the 12 months leading up to the 2011 riots, this research examines the place of drugs within everyday policing, focusing on the working lives of street-level police officers who are not attached to specialist drug squads. The concept of bifurcation (Garland 1996, 2001) is used to make sense of, ”a series of policies that appear deeply conflicted, even schizoid, in their relation to one another” (Garland 2001, pg. 110). Analysis of the ethnographic data shows how the ‘structured ambivalence’ of state responses is evident in relation to front-line policing, including the policing of drugs. We find that the backbone of modern policing, Response Teams, are being pulled towards a ‘classic’ style of policing where officers ‘act out’ and impose order through the visible exercise of their powers, reasserting the authority of the state. This is a far cry from officers in Safer Neighbourhood Teams who work predominantly on Community Policing efforts, adapting their working styles, engaging with community partners, and focusing on ‘damage limitation’ efforts. The thesis charts these different orientations in relation to officers’ general activities, before going onto show how they are visible in the way each team approaches drugs policing. From here it will be argued that the increase in recorded incidents involving drugs reflects the influence of New Public Managerialism and the focus on output-based targets. These performance targets were easily fulfilled by targeting low-level drugs offences, and once met, officers were free to police as they saw fit. Instead of officers evolving their practices as the organisation evolved, NPM allowed officers to stand firm and maintain their culture, policing practice, and sense of mission. The author accompanied both Response Teams and Safer Neighbourhood Teams of the Metropolitan Police Service during their shifts, and also conducted 23 interviews with officers. This research also developed new digital ethnography methods that might be utilised by ethnographers in other disciplines.

“Walking Pictures” is about how tourists walk London. It studies two ways of walking the city: walking tours and film. My thesis demonstrates how each is implicated in the other’s practices. Combining historical research of the development of tourist walking between 1880 and 1939 with cinematic textual analysis of London-set non-fiction and fiction films of this period, I ask: how might the views and experiences of London’s walking tourists be imbricated within the city’s cinematic incarnations? I focus on a period between 1880 and 1939, when large numbers of tourists started arriving in London via new modes of mass transport. The development of walking tours for these tourists in the 1880s and 1890s runs roughly tandem to the early days of cinema. Though films taken aboard moving vehicles proved popular, early films were often taken on the ground, embodying a pedestrian view of the city. My first chapter therefore contextualises the thesis by telling a parallel history of tourists walking London’s streets and spectators experiencing those same streets in the cinema. Subsequent chapters follow thematic routes through the city, walking a literary London, landmark London, and an impoverished London. Each chapter asks a series of questions. What were the origins of these thematic routes? How and why did these routes become codified in the form of walking tours? What did tourists see and experience on these walks? How does cinema not only reflect the experiences of tourists, but enable those unable to walk the city’s actual streets to experience them fantasmatically in the cinema? Together these chapters seek to understand the cinematic city through its walks. Contributing to larger discourses in history, geography, and film studies, “Walking Pictures” addresses how representations of the city shape the way we perceive and move through urban space.

The Great Fire is an iconic moment in the history of London. It took place in the context of the Restoration, and had major value for any political group that wished to use it. London was the political, social, cultural and economic centre of England, so the Fire had the potential to seriously disrupt the nation. This thesis has shown that the Fire was a disaster for the Londoners it directly affected. However, it was not a disaster in the long-term. This thesis, using Hearth Tax assessments and records of the Merchant Taylors' Company and London's booksellers, has shown the essentially stable nature of London's demography, society and economy. The Fire only devastated the City - an area that was declining in its importance in the overall structure of the metropolis. The Fire had the effect of speeding population growth outside of the Walls, but this was an ongoing trend in 1666. This thesis has examined the nationwide response to the Fire, with charitable contributions for London coming from across England, for both `distressed' Londoners and the rebuilding of St Paul's Cathedral. Urban areas and the South-East tended to be the most generous. The distribution of the donations to Londoners after the Fire was along existing charitable lines - concentrating mostly on widows and other 'deserving' poor. The long-term impact of the Fire lay in its polemic value. Interpretation of the Fire was highly contested, appearing in all forms of media, and used across the political spectrum - from nonconformists to Anglican Royalists. At key `moments', the memory of the Fire was used - in particular during the Exclusion Crisis. The example of the Fire was utilised by all religious groups, especially to remind of the consequences of divine wrath. This thesis has shown that ultimately, London was resilient to the damage caused by the Great Fire.

Firms’ spending on their employees is written off as expense to the annual financial statements under the current accounting treatment. This accounting treatment has been debated over decades, since employees are arguably claimed as the true value creators of firms’ intellectual capital. Value creation potential of employees, identified theoretically as human capital has been researched for valuation and measurement for accounting recognition of human capital investment and decision usefulness of financial reporting recognition through mandatory and mostly voluntary disclosure. Research evidence are found under different phenomenon namely; social capital, intellectual capital, human capital, etc. considering, investment, accounting and reporting practices, though on an ad-hoc basis, highlighting the need for a study covering a holistic picture of the accounting and financial reporting recognition of human capital investment. Hence, the research is conducted, addressing the current practice of accounting and financial reporting recognition of firms’ human capital investment, considering both determinants and consequences of the practice utilising a stakeholder approach. The research is undertaken with data collected from annual reports of firms of FTSE 100 listing of London Stock Exchange for five accounting years, (2004-2009) chosen subjected to data availability, analysed using panel data analysis techniques with fixed and random effect estimators coupled with pooled linear regression as an alternative approach. The results of the study indicated a significant variance in the practice implying positive influences on promoting the practice accounting and financial reporting recognition of human capital investment. The results further indicated the requirement of a framework governed by standards and guidelines in promoting the practice accounting and financial reporting recognition of firms’ human capital investment.

For economic geographers interest in the role of knowledge in economic activities and a 'knowledge economy' raises questions about how geography enables (and disables) learning and whether the production of tacit knowledge has exclusively local or multiple overlapping geographies. This thesis engages with this debate and considers its relevance to the geographies of tacit knowledge production (learning) in the employees of global advertising and law professional service firms operating in London and New York City. It begins by critically engaging with theories of knowledge, learning and their geographies to develop a spatially sensitive approach to examine learning. Such an analysis is then applied in order to understand the geographies of knowledge production in global advertising and law firms. Three themes are addressed. First, why is tacit knowledge important in the work of these firms? Second, what are the key practices involved in producing such knowledge? Third, what are the geographies of these practices and how important is the local scale (the communities within London and New York) and the global scale (the communities stretched between offices of the global firms studied) for knowledge production. Research findings from semistructured interviews highlight the multiple geographies of learning in the firms studied at both local and global scales. This is enabled by a number of 'embedding' forces that 'smooth' the learning process and that have multiple geographies themselves. It is therefore argued that a relational and topological analysis that traces the learning networks across space most usefully provides insights into the geographies of knowledge production. This reveals that the 'networks and spaces of learning' are fluid and transcend spatial scales when suitable constructed.

This thesis explores the ways in which discourses of citizenship are circulated and incorporated into the practice of non-formal educational filmmaking initiatives for young people in London. I utilise an ethnographic approach focusing on young participants, adult facilitators and funders to demonstrate how youth filmmaking facilitates an exploration of abstract conceptions of citizenship with the on-the-ground reality of young peoples’ “practice” as citizens. To provide context for this material, I present both a theoretical overview of the heady yet labile term “citizenship” and a historical narrative of youth filmmaking, particularly in its relationship to wider political economies of funding and youth policy. Although discourses of citizenship in youth filmmaking have changed subtly over time, the youth filmmaking programmes considered here marshal three central conceptions of citizenship; “engagement,” “empowerment” and “belonging.” To explore each of these notions, I draw on case studies to show how these citizenship discourses become operationalised. First, I consider the Reelhood project for young Muslims, which aimed at encouraging “political engagement.” I demonstrate how young people challenge notions of “disengagement” and operate as “justice-oriented” citizens, in contradistinction to the premise of the funding source itself. Second, I use the example of the This is My Story project, amongst other films that dealt with youth violence, to explore discourses of “empowerment.” Using the metaphor of the “shot/reverse shot” sequence, I demonstrate how youth filmmaking projects situate themselves as an alternative to the representation of young people in mainstream press. Finally, I describe the River Lea project in which the sensory and technological processes of filmmaking became a means for young people to “focus in” and attune their sensory and perceptive faculties to the experience of “place-making.” Each of these case studies exhibits how the creative, social and technical processes of filmmaking provide a challenge to or re-interpretation of citizenship discourse.

Transformation is undoubtably a moral imperative. It primarily relates to the eradication of past discriminatory practices and the establishment of a society founded upon equality and justice. Unfortunately transformation has become a buzz word that is used in academic literature, legislation and the media I a variety of content. This research will focus on the mining sector, given the importance of the sector to the South African economy and the slow progress that the sector has made in advancing transformation. This dissertation sets out to better understand the term transformation through an extensive analysis of the current framework in which mining forms operate. This includes non-legislative and legislative documents. The research will take the form of a case study that focuses on Lonmin Plc. It will first conduct an extensive review of the literature and the transformation framework that applies. Secondly, the research will bring the case study into a current reality by interviewing individual miners, community leaders and Lonmin representatives. These interviews will be semi-structured, whereby an interview guide will form the base of the discussion. The goal of these interviews is to view the current transformation framework in light of the lived experiences of individuals. The interview data will be analyzed using a thematic analysis approach, initially coding the interview manuscripts and ultimately collating these codes into themes which will be discussed in detail. The research will focus on a Black Economic Empowerment deal that was concluded between Lonmin and the Bapo Community. The is intended to highlight some of the complexities surrounding Black Economic Empowerment deals in practice. The research found that the main components of transformation, as illustrated by the literature and the interviews, are the creation of better working conditions for miners, the skills development of Historically Disadvantaged South Africans, the adoption of preferential procurement policies by Lonmin Plc and the conducting of proper engagement processes between mining companies and mining communities.

This thesis challenges assumptions about the democratization of amateur film-making in the United Kingdom. By identifying a body of serious amateur film-makers, the thesis broadens our understanding of amateur film-making in the interwar era. It demonstrates by way of a case study of one south London cine-club in the inter-war era, Ace Movies, that the history of the first generation of cine-clubs in the United Kingdom is more complex than is currently appreciated. Derided in British inter-war intellectual film journals for being little more than social clubs trying but failing to emulate commercial film production, the thesis identifies a creative response to British inter-war film culture that not only challenges perceptions about the quality of cine-club films but also the extent of intellectual engagement with that culture. The thesis engages with recent work on alternative film culture, more established works about the development of film culture and production in Britain in the inter-war period as well as studies of class and gender engagements with leisure. Drawing on a range of primary sources, including intellectual film journals, amateur film magazines and Ace Movies' surviving films, the thesis explores the social context in which the first cine-clubs in the United Kingdom emerged; identifies the relationship between the first generation of cine-clubs and alternative and mainstream film cultures; identifies in the studios developed by cine-clubs like Ace Movies a mode of film-making that is distinct from the home mode; and demonstrates that the distribution and exhibition practices of the first generation of cine-clubs were more ambitious than is currently appreciated.

Figuring Space; considering the figure in the construction of space in materialist film is an analysis of film space that uses either the image of a figure or the actual figure of the viewer in its construction. The thesis focuses on particular screen works of William Raban, Guy Sherwin, Malcolm Le Grice, Chris Welsby, Nicky Hamlyn, Peter Gidal (all members of the London Filmmakers’ Cooperative) and the Canadian artist Michael Snow. It discusses the works in relation to the basic materials of time, light and sound found in film and video. The thesis looks at the way the film frame was implemented in the work of these artists to challenge preconceived notions of film space. It also highlights the uncertainty of spatial relativity within the screen image once the techniques imposed by the artist undermine previous determinations of positions in space. The frame provides necessary elements with which a reading of a pictorial space can be made. In addition, with some of the works discussed, the frame defines an exterior screen space that at times questions the boundaries between on-screen and off-screen, and fictive space and real space. While in other works that are addressed, binaries exist within which the boundaries of a picture plane are utilized to determine an object’s spatial relativity, which in turn questions the relativity of those boundaries that determine it. The frame that previously confirmed the illusions of space within the pictorial plane could no longer be prescribed as definitive. Calculations of the film space would become dependent upon a point of origin that is situated within actual time and space at the position of the viewer. The figure of paramount importance, when considering the constructs of space within materialist film, is that of the viewer

Nostalgia is the longing for a lost, and often substantially reimagined, time or place. Commonly regarded as a conservative impulse available for exploitation by hegemonic forces, nostalgia can also be a source of social questioning and creative inspiration. This dissertation examines the ways in which nostalgic longing imports images and ideas from memory into present discourse and infuses works of art with complication, contradiction, and ambiguity. In the early 1960s, emboldened by Nikita Khrushchev's cultural Thaw, many Soviet filmmakers engaged both personal and social memory to craft challenging reflections of and responses to their times. These filmmakers reengaged the sundered spirit of the 1920s avant-garde and reimagined the nation's artistic and spiritual heritage; they captured the passing moments of contemporary history in a way that animated the permanent, productive, and sometimes stormy dialogue between the present and the persistent past. Mikhail Kalatozov's I Am Cuba (1964), Andrei Tarkovsky's Andrei Rublev (1966, released 1971), and Marlen Khutsiev's Ilich's Gate (1961, released with changes in 1965 as I Am Twenty ) were planned in the anxious years surrounding Khrushchev's fall, and the films mark a high point of Thaw-era cinematic audacity. Each film is epic in scope; each deploys temporal longing to generate narrative ambiguity and dialogue between historical epochs. The films are haunted by ghosts; they challenge the hegemony of the "now" by insisting on the phantom presence of a thousand "thens"; they refurbish old dreams and question contemporary assumptions. The Thaw permitted the intrusion of private memory into public history, and the past became a zone for exploration rather than justification. Easy answers became harder to come by, but the profusion of questions and suggestions created a brief silver age for Soviet cinema. For us, these films offer an extraordinary glimpse into creative life during one of the great, unsung social transitions of the 20th century and reveal the crucial contribution of individual memory in the artistic quest for formal diversity, spiritual inspiration, and ethical living.

The contemporary threat of terrorism has changed the ways in which government and the public view the world. Unlike the existential threat from nation states in previous centuries, today, government and the public spend much of their effort looking for the inward threat. Brought about by high profile events such as 9/11, 7/7, and 3/11, and exacerbated by globalisation, hyper-connected social spheres, and the media, the threats from within are reinforced daily. In the UK, government has taken bold steps to foment public safety and public security but has also been criticised by some who argue that government actions have labelled Muslims as the ‘suspect other'. This thesis explores the counter-terrorism environment in London at the community/government interface, how the Metropolitan Police Service and London Fire Brigade deliver counter-terrorism policy, and how individuals and groups are reacting. It specifically explores the realities of the lived experience of those who make up London's ‘suspect community' and whether or not counter-terrorism policy can be linked to further marginalisation, radicalism, and extremism. By engaging with those that range from London's Metropolitan Police Service's Counterterrorism Command (SO15) to those that make up the radical fringe, an ethnographic portrait is developed. Through that ethnographic portrait the ‘ground truth' and complexities of the lived experience are made clear and add significant contrast to the aseptic policy environment.

This thesis examines the relationship between Italian immigrants and cinema in early twentieth century London. Through an investigation into a variety of both primary and secondary sources, I retrace the journey of migrant people and of moving images from Italy to the British capital. The aim of this study is to examine how the cultural identity of London's Italian community was constructed between 1890 and 1918 and the place of cinema within this process. The research engages with a series of questions that are linked to the notion that cinema's social role and the access of Italians to and involvement in cinema is better determined by first defining the immigrant community both culturally and historically. A discussion of the representations of, and discourses circulating about, Italians and Italian-ness, and the relative availability of cinematic images produced in or depicting Italy, permit further hypotheses about the response of the colony to moving images. The study of a very particular audience and the context in which it was situated, therefore allows me to explore a complex set of cultural and social histories. As such, the histories of emigration, film production, distribution and exhibition, and film culture more generally developed in this thesis inform a thoroughly contextual understanding of the relation between the 'Little Italians' and the cinema. In its conclusions the thesis reveals that, among London's Italian community, the formation of a sense of national identity and of a sense of belonging, whether to the country of origin or to the country of destination, remained problematic, even contested. It was elite groups above all that promoted a strong sense of national affiliation and identity, which was rather different to the experiences and allegiances of the working class members of the immigrant community. In this sense, my thesis argues that the importance of the cinema in the cultural life of the London's Italian colony was principally a result of the use made of it by the upper/middle-class immigrant elite during wartime.

We have investigated the noncovalent interactions in carbohydrate-aromatic interactions which are pivotal to the recognition of carbohydrates in proteins. We have employed quantum mechanical methods to study carbohydrate-aromatic complexes. Due to the importance of dispersion contribution to the interaction energy, we mainly use density functional theory augmented with an empirical correction for the dispersion interactions (DFT-D). We have validated this method with a limited number of high level ab initio calculations. We have also analysed the vibrational and NMR chemical shift characteristics using the DFT-D method. We have mainly studied the complexes involving β-glucose with 3-methylindole and p-hydroxytoluene, which are analogues of tryptophan and tyrosine, respectively. We find that the contribution for interaction energy mainly comes from CH/π and OH/π interactions. We find that the interaction energy of complexes involving CH/π and OH/π interactions is reflected in the associated blue and red shifts of vibrational spectrum. We also find that the interactions involving 3-methylindole are somewhat greater than those for p-hydroxytoluene. The C-H blueshifts are also in parallel with the predicted NMR proton shift. We have also tested different density functionals including both standard density functionals and newly developed M0x functionals and MP2 method for studying carbohydrate-aromatic complexes. The DFT-D method and M06 functionals of the M0x family are found to perform better, while B3LYP and BLYP functionals perform poorly. We find that the inclusion of a dispersion term to BLYP is found to perform better. The dispersion energy dominates over the interaction energy of carbohydrate-aromatic complexes. From the DFT-D calculations, we found that the complexes would be unstable without the contribution from dispersive energy. We have also studied the importance of noncovalent interactions in functionalization of nanotubes by nucleic acid bases and aromatic amino acids by using semi-empirical methods with dispersion term such asPM3-D and PM3-D*. We find that the both semi-empirical schemes give reasonable interaction energies with respect to DFT-D interaction energies. We have also used PM3-D method to study the adsorption of organic pollutants on graphene sheet and on nanotubes. We found that the semi-empirical schemes, which are faster and cheaper, are suitable to study these larger molecules involving noncovalent interactions and can be used as an alternative to DFT-D method. We have also studied the importance of dispersion interaction and the effect of steric hindrance in aggregation of functionalized anthracenes and pentacenes. We have also employed molecular dynamics simulation methods to study the aggregation of anthracene molecules in toluene solution.

This thesis contends that the image of fire is a multivalent and theologically valuable image for application in British Christian communities. My research offers an original contribution by contextualising the image of fire for Christian practice in Britain, and combining critical observation of several contemporary fire rites with theological analysis. In addition, I conduct original case studies of three Scottish fire rituals: the Stonehaven Fireball Ceremony, the Beltane Fire Festival, and Up-Helly-Aa in Lerwick, Shetland. The potential contribution of fire imagery to Christian practice has been overlooked by modern theological scholarship, social anthropologists, and Christian practitioners. Since the multivalence of the image has not been fully recognised, fire imagery has often been reduced to a binary of ‘positive' and ‘negative' associations. Through my study of non-faith fire rituals and existing Christian fire practices, I explore the interplay between multivalence, multiplicity, and liminality in fire imagery. I demonstrate that deeper theological engagement with the image of fire can enhance participation, transformation, and reflection in transitional ritual experience. I argue that engaging with the multivalence of the image of fire could allow faith communities to move beyond dominant interpretive frameworks and apply the image within their own specific context. First, I orientate the discussion by examining the multivalence of biblical fire imagery and establishing the character of fire within the British social imagination. Second, I use critical observation of community fire practices in non-faith contexts to build a new contextual framework for the analysis of fire imagery. Finally, I apply my findings to a contextual analysis of existing Christian fire practices in Britain. Throughout, I argue that sensory and imaginative interaction with the image of fire provides a way to communicate and interact with theological ideas; experience personal and communal change; and mediate experience of the sacred.

This diploma thesis is focused on the Great Fire of London in the year 1666 and on the course of events that started it. Based on historical sources, the author will try to explain how did the city leaders confront this tragedy and how was the Great Fire seen by the public. The author will also present some possible plans for the reconstruction of the city of London as well as the final plan which gave the city its current shape. This thesis is divided into three sections, first of which introduces the historical context of 17th century in England. The second part is focused on the fire itself - its cause, its development and its aftermath. The last section will introduce reconstruction plans made by five important people of the time as well as the progress of the reconstruction. Last but not least, the memorials of the Great Fire will also be mentioned in this thesis.

In the era when there are limited land resources and population explosion, high-rise building becomes one of the representative infrastructure in every city around the world. Due to the complex characteristics that high-rise buildings carried, such as high population density, complicated structure and multipurpose usage, the fire protection standard for high-rise buildings tends to be stricter than average low-rise buildings, in which there is a lower probability for high-rise buildings to be caught on fire. However both domestically and internationally, fire still happened in high-rise buildings, especially for older buildings which were built during the time when the fire protection and structural regulations were not as established as now, which then caused severe damages to the citizen’s lives and properties. This research contains data collected from both domestic and international high-rise building fire incidents, and discussions about the risk characteristics that are associated with high-rise building fire. Moreover, using the tragic England London Grenfell Tower Fire as our case study, we will reference to different reports, and reconstruct the fire scene using the Fire Dynamic Stimulator (FDS) Pyrosim, developed by the United State. Through the FDS, we will be able to collect data on the temperature and the changes in the hazardous sources, and analyze the potential improvement on fire protection equipment to prevent similar fire incident in the future.

This dissertation argues that the Williams Harvey's novel conceptualization of the circulation developed from a set of concerns and sensitivities that Harvey shared with merchants and courtiers, and that it emerged at the courts of King James and King Charles, alongside a new conceptualizations of commercial circulation. As a brother to merchants and a physician to kings during the commercial crises of the 1620s, Harvey was exposed to ways of thinking about circulation that he used to make sense of the disparate observations he made about the motion of the heart and blood. Harvey's famous quantitative argument, the thought experiment at the center of his conceptualization of the blood, was an exercise in accounting. Through a process of "reckoning," and "by laying of account," Harvey balanced blood like a merchant balances books, conceptualizing arterial and venous blood as fungible. Harvey showed that there was a recirculation of blood through the heart. Over time, these aspects of Harvey's circulation became easier to overlook; the Great Fire of 1666 destroyed the most tangible artifacts of Harvey's mercantile sociability, such as his fine Persian rugs or the collection of marvels contained in the library and museum that Harvey established at the College of Physicians of London. By situating Harvey among courtiers and royal patrons who were concerned with the circulation of cloths, dyestuffs, coin, and bullion, this dissertation aims to add to the burgeoning literature on the scientific revolution that posits a multitude of different scientific practitioners with diverse philosophical commitments and varied connections to other facets of early modern life, while stressing key conceptual changes in Harvey's thought.

Анотація:
This dissertation consists of three chapters that examine the spatial distribution of economic activities. The first chapter examines how disasters as well as individuals’ expectations of what others will do affect the development of cities. The development of cities often involves the rejuvenation or replacement of existing structures. However, history, in the form of the sunk cost of existing durable structures, often serves as an impediment to urban development. In theory, by reducing the opportunity cost of waiting to rebuild to zero, disasters can eliminate these frictions and bring about higher quality structures. In addition, the simultaneous rebuilding after a disaster would allow property owners to experience stronger cross-building spillovers which would encourage further upgrades of nearby buildings. Nevertheless, these are not sufficient to guarantee higher quality buildings. This is because individuals’ investment decisions also depend on their expectations of what others will do. Therefore, in this chapter, we examine both of these issues using the 1666 Great Fire of London as a natural experiment. First, using a difference-in-differences (DiD) strategy, we show evidence that the Fire was able to free parishes within London from the constraints of their existing durable structures and move them to a new equilibrium involving higher quality structures. Second, using DiD and an IV strategy, we find that legal rulings arising from the Fire Court – a court specially set up by the English Parliament to hear rebuilding disputes – were able to anchor expectations and in so doing, helped to facilitate the development of London. Providing causal evidence that legal rulings can be a main driver in the formation of expectations is the main contribution of our paper. The second chapter examines how the quirks of history shape present-day economic outcomes. Building on Bazzi et al. (2020), I study how a particular episode of history – time at the frontier – helps to explain the present-day manufacturing production patterns across American counties. First, I show empirical evidence that there are fewer establishments and lower employment in counties that spent a longer time on the frontier. The same results hold for industries that are more “contractible” (i.e., easier to specify in contracts and hence less susceptible to holdup). Second, using a DiD strategy, I show that firms in high “contractibility” industries sort into producing at counties that spent a longer time on the frontier. I hypothesize that due to “rugged individualism”, individuals in counties that spent a longer time on the frontier are less likely to trust other people. Therefore, anything that is not “contractible” becomes harder and more costly to enforce. Consequently, only the more “contractible” industries locate in counties that spent a longer time on the frontier. The third chapter examines how land use regulations and NIMBY (“not in my back yard”) behavior affect housing prices in the UK. In the UK, developers have to apply to the local planning authority to seek development permission. Applicants who have their plans rejected can appeal to the Secretary of State, via the Planning Inspectorate. The Planning Inspectorate then assigns an inspector to decide whether to overturn the local authority’s decision. We propose a theoretical model which shows that in locations with high levels of NIMBY-ism, developers are better off getting their plans rejected by the local authority and gambling on drawing an inspector who is less sympathetic towards locals’ NIMBY behavior. Our empirical strategy exploits the fact that inspectors are quasi-randomly assigned to the appeals. This allows us to use inspector leniency as an instrument for whether an appeal is successful. We find that overturning the local authority’s decision does not lead to a large fall in housing prices. For some projects, the impact may in fact be positive because they also add to local amenities such as retail shops. This suggests a prevalence of NIMBY-ism, as locals pressure authorities to reject even relatively benign projects.
