ObjectiveInteractive interventions are increasingly advocated to support behavior change for patients who have long-term conditions. Such interventions are most likely to achieve behavior change when they are based on appropriate theoretical frameworks. Developers of interventions are faced with a diverse set of behavioral theories that do not specifically address intervention development. The aim of our work was to develop a framework to guide the developers of interactive healthcare interventions that was derived from relevant theory, and which guided developers towards appropriate behavior change techniques.MethodsWe reviewed theories that inform behavior change interventions, where relevant to the management of long-term conditions. Theoretical constructs and behavior change techniques were grouped according to similarity in aims.ResultsWe developed a logic model that operationalizes behavior change theories and techniques into five steps likely to lead to sustained behavior change. The steps are: 1) create awareness of need; 2) facilitate learning; 3) enhance motivation; 4) prompt behaviour change; and 5) ensure sustainability of behaviour change. Conclusion and Practice implicationsA framework that sequences behavioural change techniques along a sustainability model provides a practical template for the developers of interactive healthcare applications and interventions.

As the most significant portion of a garment’s ecological footprint stems from its use, clothing users play a pivotal role in extending the clothing lifespan by way of their wear, care and repair habits. Despite the fashion industry’s slow progress towards sustainability, clothing users have autonomy to shape their practice, which holds promise for reducing environmental impacts. There is a need to explore more critically various practices such as wear, care and repair habits that contribute to longevity within the consumer’s sphere of influence. Likewise, there is a need to transform educational perspectives in the field of sustainable consumption, as increased knowledge alone has been found insufficient to drive behavioural change. This study investigates the impact of short-term behavioural modification challenges (the ‘short game’) on users’ long-term consumption behaviour (the ‘long game’). Through a case study involving young female university students, this study characterizes the implementation of a lifestyle change towards sustainable clothing use practice and highlights its effects on long-term behaviour. This case illustrates an educational intervention that employed cognitive (head), affective (heart) and practical (hands) learning activities to advance specific competencies associated with sustainable consumption in the context of clothing use behaviours. The study provides a window into the logistical challenges, emotional longings and social pressures that young consumers must invariably reconcile to remain motivated and persist in the ‘long game’ of clothing longevity. By focusing learners’ attention on clothing use behaviours and providing some supportive conditions, young consumers can make meaningful and lasting changes to their practice.

The digitalisation of services is a process that is gaining traction worldwide owing to the numerous benefits that it provides to sellers and consumers. This study aimed to explore the impact of e-marketing factors for agricultural products on the sustainable consumer behaviour. The technology acceptance model (TAM) and the extended unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2) model were used to investigate the factors that trigger long-term behavioural changes towards more sustainable consumer behaviour. Trust and continuance intention (CI) constitute sustainable consumer behaviours. The survey-based data were collected from 172 farmers in and around the Al-Baha province of Saudi Arabia. The findings reveal that, out of the six factors, social influence (SI), hedonic motives (HM), and perceived risk (PR) had a significant impact on trust whereas the perceived usefulness (PU), information quality (IQ), and the perceived ease of use (PEOU) had an insignificant impact on trust. Trust appears to had a substantial positive impact on the development of CI. Furthermore, the significant moderation of age and the insignificant moderation of education are observed among trust–CI relationship. Therefore, policymakers should concentrate on the factors such as SI and decrease the factors that are related to the PR in order to achieve a higher level of trust. This study contributes to the literature on e-marketing of agricultural products resulting in the formation of CI that triggers long-term behavioural changes towards more sustainable consumer behaviour.

Considering the short- and long-term equilibrium between indices, the present article analyses the relationship of two segments of stock markets: environmentally sustainable investment and traditional indices. We used Johansen cointegration tests and a multivariate model of conditioned heteroscedasticity on seven stock indices: five corresponding to segments of environmental investment, namely, regarding alternative energy, clean technology, green building, sustainable water, and pollution prevention, and two indices representative of traditional stock market segments, whose philosophy is based on a purely financial logic. The period considered was 8 years. Our result shows that in the long term, the pattern of behaviour of environmental indices differed from traditional indices, and no equilibrium relationships were identified. In the short term, the two groups of indices reported very similar behaviour, with the daily dynamics being determined fundamentally by cross-market factors.

The importance of studying the aspects related to the sustainable food consumption behaviour of students lies in the fact that, at this age, they begin to develop certain consumption patterns that will have long-term effects. The study aimed to identify the type of eating behaviour—sustainable vs. unsustainable—and the socio-demographic factors that influence it, among students in Romania, Bulgaria, and Moldova. The research method was a survey based on a questionnaire administered to a sample of 2378 subjects in the 2017–2018 period. The ANOVA test and simple linear regression were used to identify the correlation between the various variables analysed. The results indicate both positive aspects, which characterise a sustainable diet—high consumption of fruits and vegetables, and negative—the adoption of a mixed diet, which will have a long-term impact on the environment. Age is a good predictor of unhealthy eating habits among students, as this behaviour leads to weight gain. Gender, number of household members, rural/urban and country residence are also influencing factors for food consumption behaviour. Eating while standing and having the last meal of the day after 23:00 are practices that also have negative consequences for health. Conducting campaigns to educate students on the adoption of sustainable food consumption is necessary for all three countries to empower them to choose a healthy lifestyle.

Corporates and consumers are aware of the environmental consequences of consumption. However, forty per cent of environmental degradation is known to have been caused by human consumption behaviour while marketing has been blamed for promoting materialism (irresponsible consumption). Literature suggests that adopting responsible marketing strategies would not only promote responsible consumption (Abutaleb & El-Bassiouny, 2020) but also build long-term competitive advantage (Agrawal, Kumar, & Rahman, 2017) and help companies financially (Eccles, Ioannou, & Serafeim, 2011). Building responsible marketing strategies would, however, require changes at both, the organisational and the marketing level (Rudwaska, 2019). This paper, using a theory-building methodology, proposes a framework that identifies the organisational values (necessary condition) and the responsible marketer’s role (sufficient condition) for responsible marketing that ensures responsible consumer behaviour for all the different stages of the marketing planning process. Themes from papers presented in an International Conference on Responsible Marketing were analysed to suggest how corporates could develop responsible marketing strategies and promote responsible consumption. Applicability, limitations, and areas for future research are identified.

The quest to foster sustainable forest management (SFM) in the era of sustainable development goals has reignited the debate on forest tenure concerns. Land and forest tenure insecurity has remained a major underlying cause of deforestation in Africa, which suggests that addressing tenure issues could effectively foster sustainable forest management. Adopting theoretical literature and drawing lessons from related empirical works, this study examines the role of land and forest tenure in sustainable forest management drive. Among other things, the study discusses how land tenure promotes or inhibits sustainable forest practices. The study outlines how frustrating tenure regimes deprive the community of the needed benefits and subsequent untoward behaviour unleashed on forests. The study concludes that the idea of tenure rights and tenure security has implications on sustainable forest management and admonishes a robust tenure regime that upholds local 'people's access to and usage of forest resources without sinister machinations and subjugation of local people. The study contends that determined rights and their long-term security remain crucial in attracting the tenure holders to make a strenuous investment in SFM since investments in forestry usually are made for the long term. Among other things, the study recommends for clarity and long-term security of ownership and tenure rights regarding forest products; a need to promote capacity-building for administrators and rights holders to adopt a sustainable mindset in their exploitation of timber products; and a need to foster stakeholder participation.

Background The marine sponge Crambe crambe was chosen as an experimental model of sustainable shallow-water mariculture in the Sardinian Sea (Western Mediterranean) to provide biomass with high potential in applied research. Methods Explants were cultured in four long-term experiments (19 and 31 months at ca. 2.5 m depth), to determine the suitability of new culture techniques by testing substrata and seeding time (season), and monitoring survival and growth. Explants were excised and grown in an experimental plant close to the wild donor sponge population. Percentage growth rate (GR%) was measured in terms of surface cover area, and explant survival was monitored in situ by means of a digital photo camera. Results Explant survival was high throughout the trial, ranging from 78.57% to 92.85% on travertine tiles and from 50% to 71.42% on oyster shells. A few instances of sponge regression were observed. Explant cover area correlated positively with season on two substrata, i.e., tiles and shells. The surface cover area and GR% of explants were measured in the starting phase and monitored up to the end of the trial. High GR% values were observed both on tiles (>21%) and on oyster shells (>15%). Discussion The data on the behaviour and life-style of cultured fragments, together with an increase >2,400% in cover area, demonstrate that in situ aquaculture is a viable and sustainable method for the shallow-water biomass supply of Crambe crambe.

Ongoing globalization and changing customer needs make it increasingly difficult for firms to survive in the long term. Innovation is considered an important tool for firms in this environment. In particular, a firm’s ability to cultivate innovative behaviour and implement product innovation for sustainability is important. This study explores resources and capabilities to enhance firm innovation behaviour and implementation of sustainable product innovation. The results provide insights on how firms can manage strategies for future sustainable innovations. We used a sample of 645 small- and medium-sized enterprises and presented the conceptual framework according to a resource-based view and relational capital. We specified three independent factors that enhance sustainable innovation and superior performance: market orientation, managerial ties, and government support. We used a questionnaire survey and structural equation modelling to evaluate the conceptual model. We found that interactions between business ties, customers, and competitor orientation can enhance sustainable product innovation, whereas interactions between government support and political relations can enhance the sustainability of innovation behaviour. Moreover, product innovation and innovation behaviour are mediators that can lead to superior firm performance. The results suggest ways entrepreneurs and public policy makers can promote sustainable innovation.

Background.Although people with Multiple Sclerosis (pwMS) benefit from physical exercise, they still show reduced physical activity and exercise behaviour. This study aimed to investigate short- and long-term effects of an exercise-based patient education programme (ePEP) that focuses on empowering pwMS to a sustainable and self-regulated exercise training management.Methods.Fourteen pwMS were randomly assigned to immediate experimental group (EG-I:n=8) and waitlist-control group (EG-W:n=6) and attended biweekly in a six-week ePEP. All participants were measured for walking ability, quality of life, fatigue, and self-efficacy towards physical exercise before and after the ePEP, after 12 weeks, and one year after baseline. Short-term effects were analysed in a randomised control trial and long-term effects of all ePEP participants (EG-I + EG-W = EG-all) in a quasi-experimental design.Results.Only functional gait significantly improved in EG-I compared to EG-W (p=0.008,r=-0.67). Moderate to large effects were found in EG-all for walking ability. Not significant, however, relevant changes were detected for quality of life and fatigue. Self-efficacy showed no changes.Conclusion.The ePEP seems to be a feasible option to empower pwMS to a self-regulated and sustainable exercise training management shown in long-term walking improvements.

Environmentally conscious practices can be encouraged in many organisations through this study, which has the potential to change our understanding of bio-molecular interactions in natural systems. There is an immediate need for innovative approaches to environmentally responsible bio-molecule management due to the critical nature of environmental problems such as pollution, climate change, and resource depletion. Using state-of-the-art computational biomechanics and organic sciences, this study presents an approach to environmental governance known as Integrative Biomechanical Modelling for Environmental Governance Technique (IBM-EGT). A combination of environmental parameterization, advanced biomechanical modelling, and excellent data sets allows the IBM-EGT method to describe the behaviour of biomolecules in a wide variety of natural settings. By factoring in environmental variables like temperature, pH, and pollutant concentrations, IBM-EGT provides a comprehensive picture of bio-molecular dynamics in response to environmental stimuli. Biomaterials, bioremediation, pharmaceuticals, and even agriculture are just a few of the many potential sectors that can profit from IBM-EGT. Agricultural operations can be optimised, green medicines can be introduced, sustainable biomaterials can be developed, and diseased regions can be cleaned up with its help. Because it enables the prediction of bio-molecular interactions and behaviour in complex environmental contexts, simulation analysis is a fundamental topic of IBM-EGT. In an effort to find the best ways to conduct activities while reducing negative environmental impacts and increasing positive ones, IBM-EGT does scenario analysis based on simulations. The studies mentioned here help keep the environment and people healthy by elucidating the nature of the connection between Bio-Molecules and their herbal environment. Furthermore, it enables the development of plans for the distant future.

The amount of money that could potentially be saved by households by reducing unnecessary consumption and directed to sustainable investments without compromising the social needs in Finnish households was studied. The study was conducted by using statistical data and by creating short- and long-term scenarios to assess potential savings resulting from changes in household behaviour. According to the results, a Finnish household could save and subsequently allocate an average of €3400–€15,000 annually to invest in sustainability. The greatest potential for preventing unnecessary consumption is related to (1) food and drinks, and (2) transportation. In the long-term scenario, reducing expenditures in the category of housing also provides opportunities for high savings. A significant share of the saving created by sustainable patterns of consumption can be directed for example to investments in renewable energy.

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of community-based environmental education programs in promoting sustainable character development among participants. The research utilized a mixed-methods approach, consisting of both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis. The sample consisted of 50 individuals aged 18-30 who had participated in community-based environmental education programs within the past year. The results showed a significant improvement in participants' attitudes, knowledge, and behaviours related to sustainability after participating in the community-based environmental education programs. Qualitative data from the interviews provided further insights into the specific aspects of the program that were most impactful for participants. The findings support the effectiveness of community-based environmental education programs in promoting sustainable character development among participants and highlight the importance of creating inclusive and diverse learning environments that recognize and value different perspectives and experiences related to sustainability issues. Future research should continue to explore the long-term impacts of community-based environmental education programs on participants' behaviour and attitudes towards sustainability, as well as the broader societal and environmental benefits of these programs

The term ‘sustainable consumer’ (SC) is used across various knowledge domains, from sustainable consumption, green marketing, sustainability, and social change to social marketing for sustainability issues. However, the term SC lacks a precise definition, which leads to the inaccurate evaluation and measurement of the impact of green marketing or social marketing campaigns on consumption—sustainable or otherwise. This paper develops a framework to clarify the term ‘sustainable consumer’ to assist both scholars and practitioners. The application of systems thinking was applied to the extant literature to theorise the SC. This conceptual paper provides a new framework for theorising SCs: the integrated model of the sustainable consumer (ISMC). This framework emphasises the interconnected relationships of influences within the SC profile to assist scholars in examining SCs within these systems with precision. We contend that, to promote and maintain the desired sustainable consumption for long-term effects, researchers and practitioners should consider the impact not only of the socio-psycho-demographic characteristics but also the connection of the person to the environment and their community, in addition to their worldviews. The framework presented here challenges linear models by proposing a nested, dynamic structure that recognizes the interconnected influences within the sustainable consumer’s ecosystem. The framework also enables a targeted intervention design according to the layer and element and permits more precise evaluations of behaviour change campaigns’ effectiveness.

Nowadays, multi-criteria decision-making techniques are highly developed, and are widely applied in multiple fields. They model and solve decisional problems by optimising multiple conflicting objectives. These techniques are very useful because they simultaneously analyse all the different criteria, and select the best alternatives according to the decision-maker’s objectives and preferences. An important issue in this context is the adequacy of the structure of corporate long-term financing and its potential impact on the sustainable development of the long-term business plan. The purpose of this study is to advance the analysis of these strategic decisions, measuring the a posteriori results and analysing their coherence with the strategies followed a priori. To do this, sustainable strategic decisions will be mathematically modelled and parametrised, creating a system to study the preferences followed and to describe the corporate behaviour. This system is applied as a case example for two leading companies in the digital sector, and the corresponding results over the last few years are evaluated.

Aims and methodThis study explores the economic cost and carbon footprint associated with current patterns of prescribing long-term flupentixol decanoate long-acting injections. We conducted an analysis of prescription data from a mental health trust followed by economic and carbon cost projections using local and national data.ResultsA reduction of £300 000 could be achieved across England by improving prescribing behaviour, which equates to £250 per patient per year and 170 000 kg CO2e. These savings are unlikely to be released as cash from the service, but will lead to higher-value service provision at the same or lower cost. Most of these carbon emissions are attributable to the carbon footprint of the appointment – 88000 kg CO2e (including energy use and materials used) and the overprescribing of medication – 66000kg CO2e.Clinical implicationsPsychiatrists need to review their prescribing practice of long-acting injections to reduce their impact on the National Health Service financial budget and the environment.

Abstract Sustainability is a term that resonates throughout society in the broadest sense: from countries across continents, individual actors within communities or states – business entities, educational institutions and households, and public administrations. This is because the earth is highly likely to become unviable if we do not pursue sustainability. So many are aware of this and see sustainability as an important and no doubt long-term megatrend that affects us all. Businesses are not standing on the sidelines either, although it must be acknowledged that sustainability and economics do not always go hand in hand; however, projects with various practical sustainability benefits can be found. Unfortunately, sustainability is sometimes perceived as a topic that can be exploited in marketing in the form of “greenwashing.” This article addresses the challenges of green marketing communication, and examples from the Czech Republic are presented. Questionnaires were conducted to analyze and evaluate consumers’ attitudes and buying behavior toward sustainable products in the Czech Republic.

In an era where organisations are increasingly held accountable for their actions and their impact on society and the environment, ethical standards and effective communication behaviour have emerged as vital components of sustainable organisational development. This study examined the important place that morality and effective communication use occupy within organisations and their long-term sustainability. The paper explores quality character and organisational development; sustainable organisational development; indispensability of quality character in organisational development; effective communication and sustainable organisational development; language use, morality and successful sustainable organisational development; leadership, communication, ethical behaviour and sustainable organisational development; and, power of communication in and organisations in the new age. It was concluded that the key to successful sustainable organisation is the ability of organisations to invest in sound ethical/moral standards and employment of effective communication channels. It was recommended, among others, that management of organisations should make policies that condemn negative character in the work environment and apply sanctions where necessary, and seminars and workshops could be organized regularly for employees in the area of communication and ethical behaviour. This study espouses a multi-strategy method comprising of a qualitative study and system dynamics (SD) to deliver the long-term dynamic behaviour of human resource development (HRD) in Ghana’s oil and gas sector. The adoption of the SD differed from previous studies addressing the local content implementation challenge of human resources, thereby allowing HRD to be considered a ‘system’ which, in turn, aided in comprehensively identifying and analysing the interrelationships among the dominant variables. Focal articles were reviewed to develop a causal loop diagram (CLD) for human resource and subsequently validated qualitatively. The CLD was used for analysing interconnections among the variables in the HRD and as a basis for developing the stock and flow diagram for projections. The study found that local content investment is projected to increase from $799 million to $3.0807 billion in 50 years, with a corresponding revenue increase from $29 billion to $44 billion in 50 years. Subsequent sensitivity analysis compared the local content model results under varying situations, which indicated the possibility of a demand for 20,000 local staff. The study further uncovered two critical issues affecting HRD, namely policy coordination and harmonisation and sustainable funding. These issues are exacerbated by the pervasive political interference in the administrative and operational functions of state oil and gas institutions.

The results of the study of legal problems, which are relevant for ensuring the long-term sustainability of space activities, the course of which has been declared by the UN as a guide, are highlighted. Legal relations are singled out, which on the one hand, allow revitalizing of the commercial component of the space industry of the domestic economy, and on the other — contribute to the establishment of responsible, sustainable behaviour of all subjects of space activity on a global scale. From this point of view, the specific problems of public-private partnership in the space industry are considered, proposals are put forward regarding the legal model for the regulation of remote sensing of the Earth, challenges to international and national law in connection with cyber threats to space activities, including the use of blockchain technology, are emphasized, the international legal problems of regulating the extraction of space resources from the point of view of ensuring the sustainability of this activity and the need to develop legal mechanisms, norms, and principles of responsible human behaviour in space are accentuated. As a result of the study, the following were proposed: 1) legal means of liberalizing the participation of state-owned enterprises as subjects and not objects of public-private partnerships, 2) a model for the regulation of relations to provide Ukraine with EO data, including through public procurement by the National Space Facilities Сontrol and Test Center, 3) international legal and national legal mechanisms for combating cyber threats to space activities, 4) rules that should be developed to regulate activities for the extraction of space resources, as well as 5) rules for ensuring responsible behaviour in space.

PurposeThe critical role of diet in climate change mitigation has raised behavioural approaches to the top of the agenda. In this paper, the authors take a critical look at these behavioural approaches and call for a more dynamic, practice-oriented understanding of long-term changes in sustainable food consumption and supply.Design/methodology/approachThis approach is based on the experiences from a long-term experiment promoting sustainable eating in a workplace lunch restaurant using a series of informational and nudging techniques. In the experiment, the authors found that focussing solely on eating behaviours did not help to capture the multi-level change processes mobilised. The authors therefore propose a more dynamic, practice-oriented methodology for examining long-term changes in sustainable eating. The emprical data of the experiment are based on qualitative and quantitative data, consisting of customer survey, customer and kitchen personnel focus group discussions and monitoring data on the use of food items in the restaurant and their climate impacts.FindingsThe results draw attention to a series of practical challenges restaurants face when promoting sustainable eating. Directing analytical attention to tinkering helped to reveal the tensions brought about by labelling and nudging in menu planning and recipe development. The results show how tinkering required attentiveness to customers' wishes in both cases. Nudging offered more freedom for the restaurant to develop menus and recipes. In the case scrutinised, however, nudging customers towards tastier and more satiating vegetarian dishes included the use of dairy. This partly watered down the climate benefits gained from reduced meat consumption.Originality/valueRather than looking separately at changes in consumer behaviour and in the supply of food, the authors show how we need analytical concepts that enable the evaluation of their mutual evolution. Tinkering can assist us in this endeavour. Its adaptive, adjustive character, however, calls for caution. The development of praxis in food services and catering requires critical companions from the transdisciplinary research community. Research can provide systematic knowledge on the impacts of labels and nudges on kitchen praxis. However, research itself also needs to tinker and learn from experiments. This necessitates long-term speculative research strategies.

Purpose Obviously, the development of a robust optimization framework is the main step in energy and climate policy. In other words, the challenge of energy policy assessment requires the application of approaches which recognize the complexity of energy systems in relation to technological, social, economic and environmental aspects. This paper aims to develop a two-sided multi-agent based modelling framework which endogenizes the technological learning mechanism to determine the optimal generation plan. In this framework, the supplier agents try to maximize their income while complying with operational, technical and market penetration rates constraints. A case study is used to illustrate the application of the proposed planning approach. The results showed that considering the endogenous technology cost reduction moves optimal investment timings to earlier planning years and influences the competitiveness of technologies. The proposed integrated approach provides not only an economical generation expansion plan but also a cleaner one compared to the traditional approach. Design/methodology/approach To the best of the authors’ knowledge, so far there has not been any agent-based generation expansion planning (GEP) incorporating technology learning mechanism into the modelling framework. The main contribution of this paper is to introduce a multi-agent based modelling for long-term GEP and undertakes to show how incorporating technological learning issues in supply agents behaviour modelling influence on renewable technology share in the optimal mix of technologies. A case study of the electric power system of Iran is used to illustrate the usefulness of the proposed planning approach and also to demonstrate its efficiency. Findings As seen, the share of the renewable technology agents (geothermal, hydropower, wind, solar, biomass and photovoltaic) in expanding generation increases from 10.2% in the traditional model to 13.5% in the proposed model over the planning horizon. Also, to incorporate technological learning in the supply agent behaviour leads to earlier involving of renewable technologies in the optimal plan. This increased share of the renewable technology agents is reasonable due to their decreasing investment cost and capability of cooperation in network reserve supply which leads to a high utilization factor. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, so far there hasn’t been any agent-based GEP paying attention to this integrated approach. The main contribution of this paper is to introduce a multi-agent based modelling for long-term GEP and undertakes to show how incorporating technological learning issues in supply agents behaviour modelling influence on renewable technology share in the optimal mix of technologies. In recent decades there has been an exponential increase of activities in space, such that concerns regarding the long-term sustainability (LTS) of the space environment have called to action the need for sustainable and mitigating efforts to ensure that the benefits of space continue to be accessible and beneficial to all. In June 2019, the United Nations (UN) Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) adopted twenty-one LTS guidelines. While the guidelines are not legally binding under international law, they reflect the latest global consensus on what responsible and sustainable space activities look like in practice. In parallel, private space actors have led the charge in the development of best practices. Based on sustainability ratings successfully used in other industries, the Space Sustainability Rating (SSR) was first conceptualized in 2016 within the World Economic Forum’s (WEF’s) Global Future Council on Space Technologies as a tool to assess and quantify sustainable design and operational decisions taken by operators. This article provides an overview of the design and development methodology of the SSR, and details how regulatory norms of behaviour and best practices have been incorporated into the SSR, allowing actors the opportunity to demonstrate their adherence to sustainability guidelines. High-volume fly Ash (HVFA) concrete has gained significant attention recently due to its potential for reducing environmental impact and improving long-term durability. This project investigates HVFA’s influence on concrete rheology, aiming to explore its applicability in sustainable construction. HVFA concrete mixes M1 (30% fly ash), M2 (40% fly ash), and M3 (50% fly ash) were prepared, varying fly ash percentages as a partial cement replacement. Fresh concrete tests, including slump cone and flow table tests, assessed workability and flow characteristics. Hardened samples underwent compressive and split tensile strength tests to evaluate mechanical properties. Results provided insights into HVFA concrete rheology, focusing on workability, flowability, and mechanical performance. Additionally, the study explores potential environmental benefits and challenges linked to HVFA concrete. These findings aid in advancing sustainable concrete technologies, offering crucial insights for engineers, architects, and policymakers seeking innovative, eco-friendly construction materials and practices while addressing environmental challenges related to HVFA concrete.

This research underlines the importance of mobility management tools and small-scale targeted interventions of public space upgrades in order to encourage conscious sustainable mobility behaviour. The paper reviews tools and tactics of soft transport policy measures, as well as of small-scale and low-cost public space design approaches and strategies in the USA and Europe to assess their characteristics and results. It will then focus on Thessaloniki (Greece) presenting 1) the main findings of a trip survey concerning the impact of the economic crisis on mobility behaviour and 2) the shift to low-cost street scale urban design projects which have emerged during the crisis. The paper states that quality public space and urban transport constitute conditions necessary to attain long-term change in mobility behaviour. While the importance of hard transport policy measures should not be underestimated, the strategy for achieving sustainable urban mobility and public space design adapted to the economic crisis-specific conditions is discussed.

Ethical behaviour in companies is built on principles, rules, values and resources. As integrative ethics, the macro level ensures a long-term and sustainable orientation of the company in the context of business ethics. The macro level ensures that the company can change its role from “expactant” to “creator” with regard to corporate ethics. The mezzo level prevents unethical behaviour in companies by offering them the opportunity to reflect on their own behaviour in the context of (government) guidelines. Finally, the micro level is considered essential. It creates the systemic preconditions for companies to be able to fulfil their ethical duties and take responsibility for their actions. Partnerships and networks play a central role in this context. Against this background, the existence of a regulatory framework, the measurement of ethical corporate behaviour with the help of standards and reporting, the existence of a sustainable corporate mission statement as well as the availability of necessary resources and the documentation of sustainable behaviour in the company can be derived from the literature as central success factors for the implementation of ethical standards in companies. These factors are compared by means of empirical research with a focus on the packaging industry in Germany, Switzerland and Austria so that the existence of a guiding regulatory framework in society and a sustainable corporate mission statement emerge as the final and particularly relevant characteristics for an ethically-sustainable company, the referencing of one’s own behaviour to sustainability indices, the use of the same (in particular the Dow Jones Sustainability (DJSI) and the Financial Times Stock Exchange (FTSE4 Good) indices) in reporting, the reference to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the formulation of the corporate objective and the use of voluntary standards in sustainability reporting.

Rainwater harvesting (RWH) for domestic uses is widely regarded as an economic and ecological solution in water conservation and storm management programs. This paper aims at evaluating long-term trends in 20-day cumulative rainfall periods per year in Poland, for assessing its impact on the design and operation conditions for RWH systems and resource availability. The time-series employed corresponds to a set of 50-year long time-series of rainfall (from 1970 to 2019) recorded at 19 synoptic meteorological stations scattered across Poland, one of the European countries with the lowest water availability index. The methods employed for assessing trends were the Mann–Kendall test (M–K) and the Sen’s slope estimator. Most of the datasets exhibit stationary behaviour during the 50-year long period, however, statistically significant downward trends were detected for precipitations in Wrocław and Opole. The findings of this study are valuable assets for integrated water management and sustainable planning in Poland.

Short-term land rental agreements such as the traditional conacre system in Northern Ireland offer flexibility between the landowners and the farmers renting the land. However, the uncertainty of tenure linked to such short-term land rental systems does not allow for farmers renting the land to make longer-term investment planning and decisions, particularly around sustainable land management practices. Long-term tenancy agreements have been identified as a viable option to cope with short-term uncertainties and improve the environmental management of the land. In this study, we analysed the factors influencing farmers’ intention to adopt long-term land leasing with and without income tax incentives in Northern Ireland. To achieve our objective, we employed ordered logistic regression models complemented with qualitative analysis. The results of our analyses showed that varying factors including risk attitude, pro-environmental behaviour, profit consciousness, having a dairy enterprise, the area of farmland owned, the presence of a successor, and the age and education of the farmer influence farmers’ intention to adopt long-term land leasing. However, variability exists depending on the farmers’ rental status and availability of income tax incentives. It can be concluded from the study that policies aimed at encouraging long-term land leasing should take a holistic approach that incorporates environmental and socioeconomic factors.

Despite its importance, food habits of an individual in a foreign location has not received adequate attention in Asian research. Most of the previous studies were based in the US and Europe and focused on the students from a specific discipline (Greaney et al., 2009, LaCaille et al., 2011) or specific backgrounds (Nelson et al., 2009, Cluskey and Grobe 2009). Since the host culture is an important influence towards food consumption behaviour, this ethnographic study provides a unique, Malaysian perspective on international student’s food consumption patterns. The objective in this research was to ethnographically explore the food choice behaviour and influences on international students in private universities around Subang Jaya, Malaysia. Participant observation along with semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with the respondents. The various emerging themes of the food consumption behaviour of international long-term education tourists included food neophilia, stress eating, convenience and health and the influences comprised of price, social networking sites, friends, and word of mouth. Difference in age between researcher and other international students along with the limitations of conducting semi-structured interviews were some of the major limitations. This research can help policymakers make informed choices regarding sustainable developmental and tourism marketing for similar long-term tourists. It can help sensitize local population on the challenges and issues faced by foreign students in a new country. Furthermore, this can help the F&B industry as well as the society get a deeper understanding on how to cater to foreign long-term tourists.

AbstractLong-term behaviour changes are critical to answering societal and individual challenges surrounding areas such as sustainability and health. Current understanding of how to bring about sustained behaviour is focused on the identification of Behaviour Change Techniques (BCTs) without explicit guidance on how these should be matched with technological solutions. Based on this gap we set out to answer the research question: What is the relationship between BCTs and interactive immersive technologies with respect to long-term, sustainable behaviour? To this end, we report a literature review on technology trends in the fields of human computer interaction, human robot interaction, and game design. Based on this review we develop three main contributions with implications for design theory and practice. First, we propose a number of characteristics and mechanisms in emerging immersive technologies. Second, we highlight technological pathways connected to specific BCT clusters likely to be disrupted: technology as a conveyor of information, an augmenter of feedback, and as an embodiment of empathy. Third, we explore these connections between BCT clusters and the actual technological interventions.

Use of waste materials is an actual topic that corresponds to current trends associated with the decreasing of power exigency and sustainable development. The possibility to reduce depletion of natural resources and decrease the produced waste lies in an efficient and possibly repeated use of resources. An important subgroup of waste is formed by materials from petroleum derivatives - polymers (PP, PE, HDPE etc.). Polymers and their composite materials can be used as a base material for most products including products used in civil engineering. One of these products is an insulation block for elimination of thermal bridges in wall footing. During design of this product the MAP method (modelling-analysis-prediction) has been used together with experimental testing. This paper deals with the description of long term behaviour of an insulation block made of recycled polymers using full scale testing. Experimental data is compared to different rheological models.

The hospitality industry is an important energy consumer and carbon emitter. Behaviour-driven energy conservation is a strategy with great promise to strengthen the energy efficiency of hotel buildings. The aim of this study is to explore the driving psychological factors of hotel guests’ energy-saving intentions and behaviours. This paper constructs two extensions of the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) with personal norms, past behaviours, and self-determined motivation to explain the guests’ energy-saving behaviour in hotel buildings. This research compares the explanatory power of the original TPB and two extensions with structural equation modelling. The analysis is based on 530 valid, self-reported data from 827 surveyed hotel guests in Shanghai. The analysis suggests that the extended model gains greater explanatory power in predicting the behaviour patterns by employing the above three additional factors. In addition, self-determined motivation presents a more significant impact than other more developed TPB predictors, such as intention and perceived behaviour control. Aside from that, past behaviour replaces attitude as the most critical predictor of hotel energy-saving intention in the extended models. In addition to the existing interventions in office and residential buildings, the research highlights the role of self-determination in hotel energy conservation and further emphasises the long-term benefit of encouraging pro-environmental behaviours in hotel guests. The findings expand the existing research on pro-environmental behaviours and will contribute to energy-saving behaviour intervention in hotel buildings and policy formulations for sustainable hotel operation and maintenance.

This paper is an examination of the gentrification process and its impact on local businesses in the Gyeongridan neighborhood, Seoul. Commercial gentrification has many benefits as well as being associated with local disparity of residents. While culturally sensitive visitors enjoy the new consumption experience, it is at the expense of the local businesses. In-depth interviews were conducted with long-term shop owners to investigate the impact of gentrification in their businesses and lives. Our interpretive examination of different attitudes towards the transition revealed that reactions of long-term shop owners vary according to their situation, somewhat contrary to previous studies. Keywords: retail gentrification; sustainable neighborhood; Gyeongridan; displacementeISSN 2398-4295 © 2018. Digital technology is leading the transformation of business models into sustainable ones, expanding and changing the competitiveness scenario. This paper aims to promote a new sustainable retailer model shaped by contingent free shipping theory and the optimisation of the customer’s journey, enriching the scientific literature by proposing a consumer behavioural model that highlights the contribution of four selected touchpoints to the sustainable transformation of SMEs. The research was elaborated by deploying a framework that presents five analysis methods, namely, an additive function construction, a TOPSIS method, a Spearman rank correlation coefficient calculation, a content analysis and an analytic hierarchy process, which engender the new model. Discovering nine distinguished categories of e-tailers, the sustainable retailer profile was developed and the touchpoint with the greatest contribution to the transformation process was identified. The results of the study allowed the authors to propose the model as a solution to withstand the preponderant negative experience provided by analysed e-tailers to digital buyers, representing the opportunity for SMEs’ sustainable transformation and long-term growth in a competitive, ever-growing market.

PurposeThis paper aims to argue that resilience – and its underlying socio-ecological perspective – is a critical concept that could serve to integrate different views on, and approaches to, social marketing. The aim is to inspire social marketers to move away from narrow, issue-based interventions targeting individual behaviours and to consider the impact of social ecologies, particularly the contribution resilience research can make to behaviour change.Design/methodology/approachThis is a conceptual paper; socio-ecological models and the resilience concept are discussed and applied to a current “wicked problem” – obesity.FindingsFrom a socio-ecological perspective, research findings highlight the impact macro, meso and micro forces have on behaviour and the importance of a child’s micro-system and the influence it has on development and life outcomes. Building resilience requires a relationship-building, person-centred, holistic and long-term developmental approach to behaviour change.Research limitations/implicationsThis is a conceptual paper that introduces new concepts to the social marketing field. Future research should focus on understanding how to implement a resilience-building approach in practice – including the interrelationships and interactions between individual, family and community resilience – and how resilience can be integrated within systematic, socio-ecological thinking when addressing “wicked problems”.Practical implicationsRather than blaming and targeting individuals, the goal should be to create an environment that supports parents, families and communities to build resilience at the micro, meso and macro levels. The findings support the argument that social marketers should adopt an upstream approach to develop interventions that make the environment the primary focus. Social marketers should collaborate with, and learn from, social workers, psychologists and educationalist to further their understanding of resilience. This would have a positive, sustainable impact on a whole range of social and health issues, ultimately helping to address the overarching issue of social inequality.Social implicationsBuilding resilience amongst individuals, families and communities offer a means to achieve fundamental positive social change and to reduce social, economic and health inequality.Originality/valueThe paper offers a unique perspective on how and why resilience – and its underlying socio-ecological framework – should be applied within the social marketing field.

This investigation aims to analyse problems and growth opportunities caused by various changes in customer behaviour during COVID-19 for the New Zealand supermarket retail industry and the solutions provided to improve customer satisfaction and experience, especially in a panic buying situation. The background of changes in customer behaviour during the pandemic period was analysed and identified key challenges and opportunities faced by the industry. The information and data from this investigation was collected from already published resources. Different solutions and strategies to deal with these key problems were determined based on pricing and product portfolio strategy, the agility and resilience of the supply chain, remote expert service and security system technology, and the development of healthy and sustainable products. Recommendations are included in establishing long-term collaborative relationships with local suppliers, cultivating the digital adaptability of employees, making available organic food to customers, and developing good sustainable practices for the supermarket retail industry.

Since the United Nations announced their Sustainable Development Goal 12.3 to halve per capita food waste by 2030, prevention has become an international focus. Consumers are responsible for a significant portion of food waste, and much of this waste is avoidable by improving food management routines and planning in the household. There is a growing body of research focused on developing and evaluating domestic behaviour change interventions which can improve these behaviours. However, evidence of intervention efficacy on a household level is inconsistent, and best-practice approaches for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners have not been identified. Furthermore, the magnitude of this problem across environmental, social, and economical aspects of life necessitates meaningful long-term change. Many reviews have synthesised household food waste intervention studies, yet there is a gap exploring whether new habits can or will stick. We identify 16 peer-reviewed articles applying behaviour change interventions in the household, with a pre–post design to measure food waste both before and after implementation. The review reveals a paucity of studies that evaluate intervention efficacy relative to their baseline, as well as a significant longitudinal evidence gap. Our recommendation for further research is for the robust replication of effective short-term interventions to be tested longitudinally. Overall, this review outlines potential areas for prioritisation to enable large-scale sustained household behaviour changes in the fight against food waste.

AbstractEthiopia aims to restore 15 million ha degraded forests and woodlands, but effects on the potentially contrasting goals of long-term carbon storage, biodiversity and sustainable livelihoods are unknown. To quantify the effects of grazing exclusion on vegetation and fire behaviour, we established six 30 × 30 m fenced exclosures with grazed controls, in a mesic wooded savanna. Experimental burns were done after 1.5 years. Tree seedlings were few but more common inside fences. Field layer cover and biomass increased inside fences, and grass species increased in numbers and cover. Fire intensity was higher inside fences, killing shrubs and saplings but not mature trees. Interviews confirmed that overgrazing has resulted in “cool fires”, causing shrub encroachment. High-intensity fires occurred in the 1980s after a zoonotic disease killed most livestock. Short-term increase in carbon storage through fire and grazing exclusion may lead to loss of pasture, and in the long-term increased wildfire risk.

Generating profit is one of the primary reasons behind the establishment and functioning of any enterprise that predetermines its behavior, inter alia, in the context of sustainability. Manufacturing enterprises are a specific area in terms of sustainability, as they have a great impact on social and environmental indicators. The paper analyses the issues of sustainable production in the Slovak Republic. The methodological basis of the study is the triple-bottom line concept. The methods used in the paper are analysis, synthesis and comparison. Within the framework of the research, the author has conducted two surveys in the form of open-ended questions. The first part is dedicated to consumers’ evaluation of the production activity of manufacturing enterprises. Consumers as stakeholders of an enterprise have a significant influence on its activities due to the fact that they create market demand. The survey results show that the main methods for stimulating consumers’ sustainable behaviour are the use of compostable packaging and abandoning chemical sprays. The second part is an overview of barriers and problems at enterprises that prevent consumers in the Slovak Republic from transitioning to a sustainable lifestyle. Among them are excessive plastic packaging and high prices for eco-products. The presented activities determine the direction for managers how to lead enterprises to sustainability in the market. The most significant findings from the surveys point to the excessive and reckless use of plastic by manufacturing enterprises. Consumers demand that managers make rational decisions about the origin, quantity and quality of materials used in production, including the long-term consequences and environmental impact of materials.

Despite the mangrove’s ecosystem contributing to mitigating the effects of climate change, its significance is unknown, putting it at risk of extinction. This has contributed to a number of mangrove rehabilitation programs. However, ensuring the long-term efficiency of the conservation programs needs the involvement of the local community. Therefore, this paper aims to understand the local community mangrove conservation behaviour guided by the psychological factor that influences people’s behaviour. This research is carried out by adopting qualitative techniques through Focus Group Discussion (FGD) which involved local communities from Kg. Tg. Keramat, Kuala Selangor. Results showed that the local community nearby the mangrove forest has a positive intention and attitude towards mangrove conservation based on the five themes assigned through the FGD. The five main themes are perception, intention, attitude, perceived behavioural control, and personal norm. Among the local community, perceived behavioural control has the most positive effects on mangrove conservation. However, because of the lack of conservation activities involving the local community, there were no community empowerment and enforcement from the top management upon receiving activity reports which significantly changed their intention towards mangrove conservation. From the result, it can be concluded that people that live nearby the mangrove forest will have a positive attitude and intention towards conservation as it will affect their living and surrounding. However, these positive intentions need full support from the higher authority to ensure a long-term resilient program and sustainable management of mangrove conservation.

Advertising can influence and change consumers’ attitudes, habits, and behaviour and can therefore be a way to promote sustainable mobility and multimodality in urban transport systems. This paper focuses on the following questions: what is the impact of advertising on consumer behaviour in the context of sustainable mobility and multimodal decision making in urban transport systems? This paper assesses the impact of advertising on consumer behaviour in the context of the scientific literature, and discusses the methods and effectiveness of advertising in promoting sustainable mobility and multimodality in urban transport systems. Thus, this study examines the role of advertising and its impact on consumer behaviour, and provides a framework for the use of advertising to promote sustainable mobility and multimodality in urban transport systems. The study involved 396 inhabitants of major Lithuanian cities. Analytical descriptive, quantitative, and statistical research methods were applied. A quantitative research strategy was used to better understand the expression of advertising and its impact on the development of sustainable mobility and multimodality in urban transport. The results show that advertisements promoting sustainable mobility do not have a significant impact and only a small proportion of respondents associate advertisements with the development of sustainable mobility and multimodality in urban transport. This provides an opportunity to improve the information system of advertisements by exploiting the originality, text, content, and idea of the advertisement, which the study found to be one of the most influential factors in changing consumers’ attitudes and encouraging them to make travel decisions based on the principles of sustainable mobility and multimodality. In addition, television, the internet (including e-mail advertising), radio, and outdoor billboards can be among the most effective means of providing information in anticipation of the development of sustainable mobility and multimodality in urban transport. The results of the study will therefore have long-term value for the scientific debate on the impact of advertising on the promotion of sustainable mobility and multimodality in urban transport, and a practical relevance for providing guidelines for the development of sustainable mobility and multimodality in urban transport in the information advertising system.

An integrated forward osmosis (FO) and membrane distillation (MD) system has great potential for sustainable wastewater reuse. However, the fouling and long-term durability of the system remains largely unknown. This study investigates the fouling behaviour and efficiency of cleaning procedures of FO and MD membranes used for treating domestic wastewater. Results showed that a significant decline in flux of both FO and MD membranes were observed during treatment of wastewater with organic foulants. However, shear force generated by the increased cross-flow physically removed the loosely attached foulants from the FO membrane surface and resulted in 86–88% recovery of flux by cleaning with tap water. For the MD membrane, almost no flux recovery was achieved due to adsorption of organic foulants on the hydrophobic membrane surface, thus indicating significant irreversible fouling/wetting, which may not be effectively cleaned even with chemical reagents. Long-term (10 d) tests showed consistent performance of the FO membrane by rejecting the contaminants. However, organic foulants reduced the hydrophobicity of the MD membrane, caused wetting problems and allowed contaminants to pass through. The results demonstrate that combination of the FO and MD processes can effectively reduce irreversible membrane fouling and solve the wetting problem of the MD membrane.

In this article I discuss seven recommendations for making personal development sustainable through the application of emotional intelligence (EI). Our definition of EI focuses on the importance of attitudes for long-term change, therefore distinguishing EI from other approaches such as personality, IQ and competencies. The seven recommendations are based on the view that attitudes are formed and developed in the limbic brain (LeDoux, 2003), which unlike the neocortex, learns mainly through emotional experience. In summary then, to make behaviour change enduring we must change attitudes, which requires emotional learning and is best achieved through focusing on the present, being bodily aware, group interaction, linking behaviour to attitudes, habit change, focused rehearsal, varied forms of feedback and committing sufficient time.

Abstract Time-limited prevention initiatives are frequently used to address complex and persisting public health issues, such as non-communicable diseases. This often creates issues in terms of achieving sustainable change. In this study, we use a system dynamic perspective to explore the effects of stop–start funding over system behaviour in two community-based initiatives designed to prevent chronic diseases and obesity. We conducted a qualitative exploratory study using complexity theory as an analytical lens of two Healthy Together Communities (HTCs) initiatives in Victoria, Australia. Data were generated from 20 semi-structured interviews with health promotion practitioners and managers, from community health and local government organizations. Template analysis based on properties of complex systems informed the inductive identification of system behaviour narratives across the stop–start life-course of HTCs. A central narrative of system behaviour emerged around relationships. Within it, we identified pre-existing contextual conditions and intervention design elements that influenced non-linearity of system self-organization and adaptation, and emergence of outcomes. Examples include cynicism, personal relationships and trust, and history of collaboration. Feedback loops operated between HTCs and these conditions, in a way that could influence long-term system behaviour. Taking a dynamic life-course view of system behaviour helps understand the pre-existing contextual factors, design and implementation influences, and feedback loops which shape the long-term legacy of short-lived interventions aimed at solving complex issues. In turn, greater awareness of such interactions can inform better design and implementation of community-based interventions.

This study examines the mediation effect of managers’ ethical behaviour and organizational change on the leadership dimensions that influence sustainability leadership among Sri Lankan managers. Manager’s attitudes to organizational change and their ethical behaviour are identified as essential dimensions to achieve sustainable leadership in the business world. While much of the literature underlines the direct relationship between organizational leadership and either organizational change or manager’s ethical behaviour, only a few studies focus on the mediating effect of the manager’s ethical behaviour and organizational change leadership on perceptions of creating a sustainable organization. Sri Lanka is identified as a developing country with strong socio-cultural values that promote sustainability. Understanding what constitutes sustainability leadership in a developing country such as Sri Lanka is worth examining. The responses of 596 managers were analyzed using factor analysis and structural equation modeling. The findings confirm that stakeholder relations are the most influential dimension for creating sustainability leadership. Mediation analysis tests confirmed that the two mediators of managers’ ethical behaviour and change leadership fully mediate the relationships between employee engagement and leaders’ concern for social and environmental sustainability, which concern was identified as the weakest of the three leadership dimensions suggesting that long-term orientation has not much potential for creating sustainability leadership among Sri Lankan managers.

BENEFFICE designed (eco-)system aims to reduce wasted electricity by incentivizing long-term consumption savings. It leverages Internet of Things enabled, low cost devices, which capture electricity use patterns at the level of clusters of devices and of each individual consumer. An energy behavior model correlates these patterns with optimal, personalized comfort levels and geographic and energy use contexts to determine optimal energy use behavior to reduce wastage of energy and to increase the use of renewable resources. Personalised, real-time motivational paths and challenges are contributing to deliver sustainable reductions of electricity consumption. Voluntarily engagement is achieved by the provision of monetary rewards -CO2 credits- in return of electricity savings and successful challenges. A novel ecosystem of like-minded actors of businesses who pay in CO2 credits and consumers who act for earning them is established.

Dietary quality and sustainability are central matters to the international community, emphasised by the burden of the COVID-19 pandemic. To promote healthier and more sustainable food-related practices, the protocol of a web-based intervention to enhance adults’ food literacy is presented. The FOODLIT-Trial is a two-arm, parallel, experimental, and single-blinded randomised controlled trial delivered over 11 weeks. Based on the Food Literacy Wheel framework and supported by the Health Action Process Approach (HAPA) and the Behaviour Change Techniques Taxonomy, weekly content with customised behaviour change techniques (experimental group) is hypothesised to be more effective to promote food behaviour change when compared to a single-time and non-customised delivery of food-related international guidelines, with no theoretically informed approaches (comparison group). Primary outcome is food literacy, including food-related knowledge, skills, and behaviours, assessed with the FOODLIT-Tool; a secondary outcome includes psychological mechanisms that efficaciously predict change in participants’ food literacy, measured with HAPA-driven items. Enlisted through online sources, participants will be assessed across five time points (baseline, post-intervention, and 3-, 6-, and 9-month follow-ups, i.e., T0–T4). A randomisation check will be conducted, analyses will follow an intention-to-treat approach, and linear two-level models within- (T0–T4) and between-level (nested in participants) will be computed, together with a longitudinal mediation analysis. If effective, the FOODLIT-Trial will provide for a multidimensional and cost-effective intervention to enable healthier and more sustainable food practices over the long term.
