To the Editor.— A recent increase in phenytoin (PHT) toxicity in children prompted us to investigate prescribing practices of pediatricians in Long Island, NY. Questionnaires, consisting of 18 questions regarding the use, kinetics, and side effects of PHT, were sent to 603 pediatricians. There were 97 respondents (16%). Of the respondents, 29% originally prescribed PHT themselves (n = 76 = number who responded to question). The mean number of children treated per month was 2.3 (range 1 to 12).

P159 Background: Population-based data on the incidence of brain AVM hemorrhage is scarce. We studied detection rates of brain AVM and AVM hemorrhage in a defined population. Methods: The New York islands (Manhattan, Staten Island, and Long Island) are a ZIP-code defined area comprising a 8,898,000 population. In a retrospective investigation, major NY islands hospital centers retrieved the number of patients who lived in the study area and were discharged with a diagnosis of brain AVM between 1996 and 1999. Starting March 15, 2000, all major NY islands hospitals prospectively reported data on consecutive NY islands patients with a diagnosis of brain AVM and whether or not the patient had suffered AVM hemorrhage. Referral patients living outside the study area were excluded from the sample. Results: The retrospective detection rate of brain AVMs in patients living in the study area (Table 1) was estimated to be 1.2/100,000 person-years (95% CI:1.1–1.4). As of July 14, 2000, 37 prospective AVM patients were encountered leading to a calculated AVM detection rate of 1.25/100,000 pers-yrs (95% CI: 0.9–1.7) with an estimated incidence for first-ever AVM hemorrhage (n=6) of 0.2/100,000 pers-yrs (95% CI:0.1 to 0.5). The prevalence of AVM hemorrhage (n=14) was 0.5/100,000 pers-yrs (95% CI:0.3 to 0.8). Conclusions: Our preliminary data suggest similar prospective and retrospective AVM detection rates. More than one third of AVM patients may suffer intracranial hemorrhage.

Abstract Efficacy of selected turf insecticides was evaluated against Oriental/Asiatic garden beetle grub on Canadian hemlock trees growing in a commercial nursery. Experimental design consisted of treating 4 adjacent rows (ca 13.7 m) with ca 12 trees/row. Three check rows were established between treatments. All materials were liquids, premeasured in the laboratory, and applied with 3 gal of water per row through a watering can on 14 Aug. Materials were applied to the base of all trees. At treatment time the following environmental and soil conditions existed: air temperature, 83°F; soil temperature (1 inch), 79°F, (3 inch) 78°F; soil type, sandy loam; soil moisture, 1.11 (w/d); water pH, 5.7; and sunny. On 23 Sep, five trees were randomly selected from each of the center 2 rows/treatment. Trees from the center row were randomly selected for the control. Trees were dug up as if to be shipped. The soil on the roots and within a 6-inch radius was screened through a US Standard Sieve Series #6 wire mesh screen. Species identifications were determined in the laboratory.

Shoreface-connected ridges (SFCR) are series of ridges and troughs obliquely oriented towards the shore in the inner-continental shelf. They exist sporadically from Long Island to Florida on the North American Atlantic Shelf with maximum expression on the Delmarva peninsula (Swift et al., 1978), including the western half of Fire Island, NY. The long-term historic shoreline record of Fire Island (e.g., Allen and LaBash, 1997) shows persistent undulations in shoreline shape at an alongshore scale similar to the alongshore scale of the ridges. These ridges and troughs are spaced approximately every 2 to 3 km in the alongshore and occupy a total length about 14 km in the cross-shore direction with an average crest to trough height of 2 m.

<em>Abstract.-</em>In 2002, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) implemented the I FISH NY program in Long Island and New York City using funds from the Sport Fish Restoration Program, administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The program was created to ensure that anyone who has a desire to fish would have the resources and knowledge necessary to do so, and to increase stewardship by building public awareness and understanding of aquatic resources in metropolitan areas of New York State. DEC subsequently partnered with New York Sea Grant to perform activities including community fishing clinics, school programs, and day-camp programs. Numbers of people reached and quality of programming have increased since program inception, and this is attributed to creation of full-time, long-term staff positions.

High quality interventions, which employ an extended contact model, wherein stories, roleplaying, and other appealing informational media are used to promote more positive intergroup attitudes, tend to be effective at enhancing the attitudes, intentions, and interests of typical children toward their peers with differences. The following four studies assess the efficacy of The Realabilities comic book series and the Addy & Uno off-Broadway musical, which promote kindness, empathy, and a stop-bullying platform while teaching about disabilities and/or mental health disorders. The studies include 1) a qualitative study of 19 fourth grade students from an elementary school in Paramus, NJ, who viewed the Addy & Uno off-Broadway musical and participated in the full Realabilities educational comic book series intervention; 2) a qualitative study of 20 high school students with diverse disabilities, who participated in the full Realabilities comic book series intervention; 3) a quantitative study of 76 students from a high school in Long Island City, NY, who read the first mental health-based Realabilities comic book; and finally, 4) a quantitative study of 66 students from a high school in Long Island City, NY, who read the first and second mental-health based Realabilities comics. The researchers used a coding system to find principal themes in the qualitative data and used modified versions of the adjective checklist (ACL) and shared activities questionnaire (SAQ), along with a knowledge measure, to assess quantitative changes from pre to post-testing of the comic book series. Study findings help support the efficacy of an extended contact model and suggest that programs like these may serve as useful antidotes to counter negative attitudes of children and adolescents towards disabilities and mental health disorders, respectively.

<p>The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has completed the replacement of the congested and functionally obsolete Goethals Bridge, a circa 1928 steel cantilever truss bridge, with a dual-span modern cable-stayed bridge connecting Elizabeth, New Jersey and Staten Island, NY. Designed as a 150 year service life structure, the newly opened crossing paves the way towards achieving the possibility of a 200 year bridge, both in material durability, structural redundancy / resilience, and modal flexibility.</p><p>The new crossing features three eastbound and three westbound lanes plus a 3 m wide shared use path (SUP) for bicycles and pedestrians. To accommodate future expansion, the superstructure of the cable stayed spans is designed to receive steel framing to support a variety of possible transit options including light rail, while the substructure need not be strengthened for this future load. With a 274 m main span, the new crossing provides a significant maritime navigational improvement over the original 205 m steel truss span.</p><p>Herein we focus on the strategic application of corrosion protection strategies to achieve the long service life in a competitive bid environment, structural benefit of the design as relates to resiliency, modal flexibility, and operational redundancy to withstand extreme events.</p>

Hybrid solar lighting (HSL) is a technology in which sunlight is collected and distributed via optical fibers into the interior of buildings. Analogous to hybrid electric vehicles that use both batteries and internal combustion engines to power cars, hybrid lighting employs roof-mounted collectors to concentrate sunlight into flexible optical fibers and carry it inside buildings to “hybrid” light fixtures that also contain electric lamps. As the two light sources work in tandem, control systems keep lighting levels constant by dimming the electric lights when sunlight is bright, and turning them up as the sky darkens with weather conditions or nightfall. Data indicate that on a bright, sunny day the power consumption for lighting can be reduced by 50% or more. Today, lighting in U.S. residential and commercial buildings consumes close to 5 quadrillion BTUs of primary energy and one-fifth of all electricity. In commercial buildings, one-quarter of all energy demand is for lighting. With a forecasted doubling of commercial floor space by the year 2020 comes an urgent and growing need to find more efficient ways of lighting our nation’s buildings. Typically, less than 25 percent of the electrical energy consumed for lighting actually produces light; the rest generates heat, which increases the need for air-conditioning. Unlike conventional electric lamps, the sunlight from HSL systems produces virtually no waste heat. A nationwide field trial program is under way to provide system performance data and user-feedback essential for the successful commercialization of HSL. Field trial installations include San Diego State University, San Diego, CA; Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland, WA; Sacramento Municipal Utility District, Sacramento, CA; Wal-Mart, McKinney, TX; Aveda Corp., Minneapolis, MN; Staples, Long Island, NY; Braden’s Furniture, Knoxville, TN; Multipurpose Research Facility, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Oak Ridge, TN; University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Las Vegas, NV; Hybrid Lighting Laboratory, ORNL, Oak Ridge, TN. This paper describes the field trial program and summarizes the results to date from the field trial installations.
