In this thesis, we address the issue of motionrepresentation for the purpose of detecting and recognizingmotion patterns in video sequences. We localize the motion inspace and time and propose to use local spatio-temporal imagefeatures as primitives when representing and recognizingmotions. To detect such features, we propose to maximize ameasure of local variation of the image function over space andtime and show that such a method detects meaningful events inimage sequences. Due to its local nature, the proposed methodavoids the in.uence of global variations in the scene andovercomes the need for spatial segmentation and tracking priorto motion recognition. These properties are shown to be highlyuseful when recognizing human actions in complexscen es.
Variations in scale and in relative motions of the cameramay strongly in.uence the structure of image sequences andtherefore the performance of recognition schemes. To addressthis problem, we develop a theory of local spatio-temporaladaptation and show that this approach provides invariance whenanalyzing image sequences under scaling and velocitytransformations. To obtain discriminative representations ofmotion patterns, we also develop several types of motiondescriptors and use them for classifying and matching localfeatures in image sequences. An extensive evaluation of thisapproach is performed and results in the context of the problemof human action recognition are presented. I
n summary, this thesis provides the following contributions:(i) it introduces the notion of local features in space-timeand demonstrates the successful application of such featuresfor motion interpretation; (ii) it presents a theory and anevaluation of methods for local adaptation with respect toscale and velocity transformations in image sequences and (iii)it presents and evaluates a set of local motion descriptors, which in combination with methods for feature detection andfeature adaptation allow for robust recognition of humanactions in complexs cenes with cluttered and non-stationarybackgrounds as well as camera motion.

Повний текст джерелаBeginning in 1879, local history museums in Ontario developed largely from the energies of local historical societies bent on collecting the past. While science museums used taxonomy and classification to mirror the natural state of the world, history museums had no equivalent framework for organizing collections as real-world referents. Often organized without apparent design, by the early 20th century a deductive method was used to categorize and display history collections into functional groups based on manufacture and use.
By the mid-twentieth century an inductive approach for interpreting collections in exhibits was promoted to make these objects more meaningful and interesting to museum visitors, and to justify their collection. This approach relied on the recontextualization of the object through two methods: text-based, narrative exhibits; and verisimilitude, the recreation of the historical environment in which the artifact would have been originally used. These exhibit practices became part of the syllabus of history museum work as it professionalized during the mid-twentieth century, almost a full century after the science museum. In Ontario, recontextualizing artifacts eventually dominated the process of recreating the past at museums. Objects were consigned to placement within textual storylines in order to impart accurate meaning. At its most elaborate, artifacts were recontextualized into houses, and buildings into villages, wherein the public could fully immerse themselves in a tableau of the past. Throughout this process, the dynamic of recontextualization to enhance visitor experience subtlety shifted the historical artifact from its previous position in the museum as an autonomous relic of the past, to one subordinate to context.
Although presented as absolute, the narratives and reconstructions formed by these collecting and exhibiting practices were contingent on a multitude of shifting factors, such as accepted museum practice, physical, economic and human resources available to the museum operation, and prevailing beliefs about the past and community identity. This thesis exposes the wider field of museum practice in Ontario community history museums over a century while the case study of Doon Pioneer Village shows in detail the conditional qualities of historical reconstruction in museum exhibits and historical restoration.

Повний текст джерелаENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation investigates the medical drama series as a television phenomenon which foregrounds the body as central narrative device. By considering House M.D. and Jozi H as global and local manifestations of this genre, transnational, spatial and metafictional categorisations of the body are traced to reveal its nature as social spectacle, and meaningbearing corporeal text. The body and its concomitant identities are exposed as continually and continuously screened inside, outside and, moreover, in relation to the hospital. As an institutional space, the hospital is (re)positioned in national and transnational discourses as nexus for personal and public, individual and societal, as well as local and global truths about the body (politic). Michel Foucault’s understanding of the human body, its position as part of the larger body politic, and its control by the state is employed to foreground the bio-political classification of the (ab)normal body. Both the hospital, as space for healing, controlling and containing the body, as well as the body, as a corporeal and a psychic space itself, are signified as heterotopic spaces: part of, but also outside other places and bodies.

Understand the local dynamics of proteins in their native state, i.e. in their folded functionalstructure, is a prerequisite to understand their global dynamics and their biological function. In thepresent thesis, we investigated the local dynamics of several small proteins by recording thefluctuations of local probes along the amino-acid sequence of those proteins. We tried tounderstand the dynamics of the local probe, i.e. how they relax between their differentconformations, how their fluctuations are correlated to each other, how their fluctuations arerelated to the function of the proteins. In the first three chapters, we introduced the concepts of the free rotational Brownian motion, of the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy and of the Molecular Dynamics (MD)simulations. In chapters 4 and 5, we studied the dynamics of the backbone amide bonds of theproteins on their free-energy landscape. In chapter 4, we demonstrated that the fluctuations of the backbone amide bonds of the protein VA3 are described by a rotational anomalous diffusion rather than by a free rotationaldiffusion, as often assumed in the interpretation of the raw NMR-measured data (Spin relaxation(SR) data and Residual Dipolar Coupling (RDC) data. [...] In chapter 5, we demonstrated the anomalous diffusion of backbone amide bonds up to 100 ns by using ten MD trajectories of 1 μs of duration for the protein ubiquitin. We also studied the convergence of the NMR-derived parameters extracted from the MD trajectories in function of their duration. [...] In chapter 6, we addressed the question of the correlation between the motions of the side chains and main chain of a protein. [...] In the first part of the final chapter of the present thesis, we investigated the evolution of the correlation between the side-chain and the main-chain motions of a protein during unfolding/folding events. In this preliminary work, we used a single MD simulation of the ultrafast folder Trp-cage performed at 380 K. We confirmed the results found for proteins in theirnative state. We observed an increase of the correlation between the two time series yn(t) and δn(t) during an unfolding event characterized, here, by the exit of the TRP residue of its “cage”.A steric parameter s was also defined in order to quantify interactions of the amino-acid side chainwith its environment. In a second part of the last chapter, we present a preliminary study of theunfolding of the downhill folder gpW under a mechanical force. To characterized the unfolding ofgpW, we computed the chemical shift of the Cª and of the Hⁿ atoms along the amino-acidsequence of the protein in function of a reaction coordinate: the distance, rCªCª , between the Cª atoms of the N and C terminal residues. We demonstrated that it is hard to distinguish a typical behavior of all the chemical shift of all the residues along the amino-acid sequence in function of the distance rCªCª . However, by averaging the chemical shift over all the residues of the protein we found that the evolution of the average value of the chemical shift described the unfolding eventsof the protein during the MD simulations

American author Kate Chopin (1850-1904) is known for writing many short stories located in the state of Louisiana, which display a representation of local particularities. In several of her stories, Chopin focuses on Cajun culture and proposes a fictional representation of the language of that community (Cajun language) through the speech of the characters, as in "No baile Acadiano". Divided into three chapters, this dissertation aims to investigate whether the issue of regionality, represented by marks of local culture and cultural identity of the characters, influences in the maintenance of expressions in French and Cajun language in the translation process of the short story "At the 'Cadian Ball" into Portuguese: "No baile Acadiano". The research showed that there was influence of cultural issues and regionalities on the translation of the story because the use of language conveys social information, aspect that was exemplified during the code-switching process among characters, depending on the interlocutor. So, it is noticeable that the translator's attitude (Denise Mariné) can be considered as respectful in relation to the author and to linguistic aspects that would be lost if such sentences and/or expressions/phraseologisms were translated into Portuguese.

Cross-linguistic study on side assignment to objects and interpretation of static spatial relations by German, Polish, Italian and English native speakers." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/22879.
Повний текст джерелаThe aim of this dissertation is to investigate the use of reference frames (absolute, relative, intrinsic) and secondary local deixes (‘in front of’, ‘behind’, ‘to the right / left of’) by German, English, Italian, and Polish native speakers to describe static spatial relations. Two experiments per language were carried out. The first experiment investigated side assignment. Participants saw the object from the front (the canonical position) and the back (the noncanonical position). The results confirm that for side assignments to a canonical positioned vis-à-vis object most speakers of the four languages use the outside perspective. However, some variations occurred for Polish and Italian, especially while identifying the right and left sides showing significant differences between German and Italian. Using mouse tracking, I tested the interpretation of static spatial relations of two kinds of complexity. The simple spatial relations included either extrinsic or intrinsic reference objects (animate; inanimate) and a bottle as localized object. The complex spatial relations were supplemented by an agent and embedded by indirect speech. This allows the investigation of origo shift. In all situations, participants were asked to describe the location of the bottle. German and Italian showed significant differences in interpreting simple animate and inanimate intrinsic relations. Interpreting the intrinsic complex relations, Polish speakers shifted the origo to the agent most frequently and described the relations from his point of view. All in all, for the complex relations, the choice of the intrinsic reference frame decreased significantly compared to the simple relations. That is, most participants shifted the origo to agents’ point of view and interpreted the spatial relations applying the reflection strategy.

In Mallorca, sea breeze presents prototypical characteristics. It is so consistent that its effectiveness allows for easy common as well as scientifc verification. Daytime breezes operate simultaneously from different coasts, and penetrate inland. Its centripetal nature causes wind convergences in certain inland areas, where summer rainfall tend to focus. The agricultural area has historically made with massive territorial deployment of cereal production infrastructure, mainly threshing floors, the main factor of its location being the quantity of the wind resources available. These are small circular spaces that can be interpreted in relation to climate. A synthetic chart of threshing floors and a methodology designed to indirectly determine the dominant wind directions at each site have been developed, based on their geo-referencing by photo-interpretation of the ortho-photographs of 1956. The resulting anemographic model fits nicely with the main features of the sea breezes identifed by the theoretical-experimental and numerical simulations already tested.

Because of the historical opportunity that camphor tree roots were carved into marketable wood products, the local industry of wood carving has lasted for a century. Nowadays, the transformation of wood carving industry was promoted by the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum which further made the "Sanyi wood carving" stepping on the international stage. From rotten wood decorations, wood carvings to the conversion of wood carvings, cultural representations of wood carving affect the practices of the local community in different aspects. In this study, the exhibition in the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum and the culture of Sanyi wood carving were interpreted in the local context from the anthropologist Clifford Geertz''s theoretical perspective by museum ethnographic research. Within the web of meaning constructed by the interaction of Sanyi wood carving, the museum exhibition and artisans, the local knowledge in the museum exhibition was reinterpreted from the native ways of knowing in cultural logic systems. The significance of museum collections can be further clarified within the cultural context. Through interpreting the exhibition in the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum, the study pointed out that the changes in the style of sculptures exhibited according to the historical context were not just made by the market transformation. Instead, the interpretation of the style of sculptures was shaped diachronically by the substantial tradition and the interaction between the guidance artisans and the wood sculptures.

After many years of development and improvement of Amis' traditional craft have stagnated. Some of traditional craft arts have even experienced the cultural faults and fraction.Through the reinvigoration, the inheritors have pieced together the technology and culture of the craft in the broken information and memory. In the post-colonial society and the globalized environment, the development after the revitalization is inevitably mixed with the knowledge and technology of other cultures. How do these factors affect the cultural context and identity transformation of the Amis’ traditional craft; in order to make traditional crafts and modern society In order to find the use value of modern life, innovation is an inevitable development path, and which way can balance tradition and innovation, which is the part of this research. In this study, four Amis' traditional techniques were discussed as bark cloth, Amis pottery, rattan, and weaving. Using case study method to collect data and conduct interviews, analyze the content of interviews with Grounded Theory, sort out the development process of inheritors from inheritance to innovation, and then use Amis pottery as a classic case to compare and analyze the records of past literature and explore the process. The transformation of culture. Finally, based on the Hybridity and innovative theory, the paper summarizes the methods of hybridization and the types of innovation, and finds the attitudes to be maintained in innovation and the mode of constructing innovative practices. The study found that the inheritors have different levels of innovative behavior at different levels, innovation affects the transformation of identity, and identity also affects the degree of innovation development, because the inheritors will shape themselves in the process of inheritance. The subjective consciousness and spiritual principle of craft culture, that is, the individual's craft culture identity, some innovative means will not be accepted within the identity, and some will be encouraged. The innovative development of traditional crafts is not like the modern economic products. It can be developed without restrictions. The traditional crafts have their own appearance and style, and they can maintain the subjective consciousness and not be eroded by other cultures.

This case study can be divided into two phases. The first phase was about ‘local interpretation tour planning’ that was conducted by the facilitator team to help the Molisaka community residents’ participation. During the phase, the researcher was responsible for the effectiveness evaluation of the interpretation tour planning in the light of the Healey’s theory of collaborative planning in terms of knowledge resources, relational resources and mobilization capacity. The second phase was about ‘tour guide exercises’ based on the previous planning and practiced by the local community intrerpretors with help of the facilitator team. The researcher was in charge of analyzing interpretation qualities of the local community interpreters in the light of Ham’s four interpretive qualities, i.e. enjoyable, relevant, organized as well as with a theme. The results show that the community interpreters residents were good at knowledge on resources (Kr) while the interpretation opportunity (IO), an appropriate technique (AT) and the audience knowledge (Ka) could be enhanced by the facilitator team. The local community interpreter were particularly praised by tourists in terms of two qualities: enjoyable and with a theme. Besides, the family groups of tourists were more interesting in following the local interpreters from start to finish. The elder people showed more appreciation of the Molisaka’s cultural heritages and stories. The tourist participants in general did not concern too much about the weaknesses of the local community interpreters’ skills. Community interpreters of the Molisaka should enhance their strength as a living local story teller. A facilitator can help local interpreters to orginse and practice a tourist guide tour. However, professional interpretation training may not suitable for them. Individual-specific life experience gave each interpreter an unique characteristics. Local people have their suitable ways and capacities of telling local stories to tourists. The impressions of tourist participants were generally more about emotional aspects rather than local knowledge learning.

Повний текст джерелаDespite sustained efforts to implement Local Economic Development (LED) in South Africa, this has not met with the success that was hoped for. In part, this stems from the diverse conceptualizations and interpretations of LED. The research report sought to interrogate these diverse interpretations and meanings with the objective of establishing the impact that such ‘differences’ might have on the policy and actual implementation of LED in rural and urban municipalities in South Africa. To achieve this objective, the project utilized a qualitative survey, focusing on the cases of the urban-based UMhlathuze Local Municipality and the ruralbased Richmond Local Municipality. The study found that the diverse global and national ‘differences’ surrounding LED discourse have impacted significantly on how LED policies and strategies are implemented in South Africa. This includes a significant level of confusion regarding the most suitable implementation strategy. The study concludes that consensus on the definition of LED and the theoretical framework that informs LED should be reached within the South African policy context.

Democracy as experienced in Taiwan is oftentimes discussed as a reference to interpreting political futures of the Mainland China. However, China insists in defining and developing her own path leading to democracy. This study examines how two news programs, the national CCTV’s Across the Strait and a provincial TV’s Haixia Xinganxian, represent and interpret Taiwan’s presidential elections held in 2012 and 2016. In addition, how sensitive political issues are framed is examined as well. The result shows that these programs construct four distinguished news frames in building up negative images of Taiwan’s election: conflict game, chaos, politician-focused, attitude towards unification-independence and economic issue. It clearly reveals that the Mainland China has been covering and commenting on Taiwan’s democracy by her own criteria of democratic values, while in the meantime twisting Taiwan’s democratic experiences and those of the West to meet China’s own understanding of democracy theories.

In Thailand's diverse museum ecosystem, there are national museums attached to the official system, as well as local government or privately-established buildings, each of which interacts with the community based on its own power to interpret culture. Among the museums affiliated with the country, the narrative is still influenced by the central government. The national pavilion system can be divided into two categories—the “Bangkok regional premises” belonging to the “Office of National Museums” and the “Local Arts and Culture Department”. The National Museum of Foreign Affairs under the jurisdiction of the Regional Offices of Fine Arts, such as the National Chiang Mai Museum in Chiang Mai, is the latter. Local governments, in collaboration with private institutions or academic organizations, have developed cultural relics with local expositions, such as the Chiang Mai City Arts & Cultural Centre, located in the ancient city of Chiang Mai. The relevant Klangwiang Chiang Mai Museum Partnership is also available. As the second largest city outside Central Bangkok, Chiang Mai has different cultural heritage and identity with the central region because of its geographical, cultural and historical factors. It is represented by the Lanna dynasty and its related cultural influence. Go deep into today's northern regions. In addition to the historical traces of the ancient dynasty, the Lanna culture also covers the daily life of the people of the North in terms of diet, clothing, religion, festivals, language, etc. It can be said that Lanna culture has made the North of today and has become an important recognition of local culture. This study chose to observe the two museums of the National Museum of Chiang Mai and the Chiang Mai Art and Culture Center. It analyzes the display narratives of the two museums on the "Lanna Culture", how to construct Lanna's cultural interpretation and how to interact with the local through the display rights.

Taiwan’s cultural heritage conservation policy has gradually shifting its approach to establish the community-based holistic mechanism of linkage among the people of local community and cultural heritage involved both the tangible and the intangible. Ministry of Culture promoted actively “Community-based Cultural Heritage Environment Conservation and Revitalization Plan” since 2006 could be considered as a manifestation of this policy shift. The Yilan County Government has been awarded the sponsorship from this competitive project to preserve and revitalize Toucheng and Lize historic districts due to its unique execution idea and strategy. This research, through participant observation, will explore the ideas and strategies in revitalizing these two historic districts. Toucheng and Lize historic districts not only preserve tangible cultural heritage as artifacts and old buildings but also intangible cultural heritage as variety of traditional customs, belief, industries and crafts; furthermore, there are numerous characters with moving stories. Therefore, the revitalization strategies of these two historic districts can be concluded as follows. The first is to rediscover the cultural heritage in these two historic districts from the point of view of local people to consolidate community’s identity to cultural heritage conservation. The second is to recreate new and tradition-based spaces and events by creatively interpreting the rediscovered cultural heritage, and to integrate these renew old buildings and cultural activity into contemporary community’s life and cultural tourism.

Повний текст джерелаIn the present century the rural Heritage tends to a lower utilization by the society, increasingly more urban. The globalization, the cities exponencial growth and the gradual hightening rural exodus has been causing the desertification of the rural spaces. Otherwise the local economies mainly from agriculture production do not have many ways to stand out for themselves as a source of income or a social stimulus of the rural spaces subsequently leading to a society whose time passage has left its mark. One of the strategies refering to the responsability and priority to the new architects and technicians, should start by the understanding and acknowladgement in detail of this realities plus finding an eficient line of action for the rural spaces and for the cultural and social roles they play in society. The sustainable development and the value of the rural space are fundamental assumptions to the present work, that consists on the development of executable projects which have in comon to reach assumptions as learning the heritage value and the knowledge of the rural society, the companies and services of conservation and rehabilitation, the traditional knowledge of the old school masters in addition to the architecture students as volunteers who acomplished the projects developed by the main team on a mutual learning experience and learning when it comes to construction, traditional tecniques and finally the contact and blend between the habitants lifestyle and the ones who intervine. In fact it is between this rural ambience and the active participation that the Final Masters Step matches the Terra Amada Iniciative.Folowing that it is expected that the village choosen for this year,Vale de Papas, in the municipality of Cinfães will have a particular place of reflection where stories are told, the lifestyles and traditional techniques promoting an effective development in the village , a number of interventions relating to this stage, which will be meeting places for local people. The iniciative and its interventions go beyond the local meaning, it may even reach other villages of the municipality and the district. This type of interventions do not intend to “modernize” the local society but instead to represent the best they have, the knowledge and popular wisdom. This is what Terra Amada Iniciative is about beyond a set of interventions is also a social, economic, professional, cultural and tourism tool.

Curtin, Abby. "Rethinking Landscape Interpretation: Form, Function, and Meaning of the Garfield Farm, 1876-1905." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1805/5852.
Повний текст джерелаThe landscape of James A. Garfield’s Mentor, Ohio home (now preserved at James A. Garfield National Historic Site) contains multiple layers of historical meanings and values. The landscape as portrayed in political biographies, political cartoons, and other ephemera during Garfield’s 1880 presidential campaign reveals the existence of the dual cultural values of agrarian tradition and agricultural progress in the late nineteenth century. Although Garfield did not depend on farming exclusively for his livelihood, he, like many agriculturalists of this era participated in a process of mediation between these dual values. The function of the landscape of Garfield’s farm between 1876 and 1880 is a reflection of this process of mediation. After President Garfield’s assassination in 1881, his wife and children returned to their Mentor home. Between 1885 and c. 1905, Garfield’s widow Lucretia made numerous changes to the agricultural landscape, facilitating the evolution of the home from farm to country estate. Despite the rich history of this landscape, its cultural complexity and evolution over time makes it difficult to interpret for public audiences. Additionally, the landscape is currently interpreted exclusively through indoor museum exhibits and outdoor wayside panels, two formats with severe limitations. I propose the integration of deep mapping into interpretation at James A. Garfield National historic site in order to more effectively represent the multi-layered qualities of its historic landscape.
