Dr Michael Bell was born in Kingston, Ontario, on October 14, 1944. He was always a curious child who exhibited a tendency toward innovation and experimentation. Dr Bell was accepted into the MD program at the University of Toronto graduating in 1969 before completing his plastic surgery residency there. Dr Bell accepted a position bringing hand and microsurgery expertise to the University of Ottawa in 1976. He pioneered the widespread use of local anesthetic for surgery and developed an innovative relationship with Leonard Lee of Lee Valley tools. Canica Design created several surgical products, including an enhanced design on the traditional scalpel handle and wound closure devices. Dr Bell had a passion for making improvements to enable surgeons to advance patient care. He encourages a philosophy of critical thinking that contributes to continued design in plastic surgery. Dr Bell continues to design and craft new devices with alumni of the Lee Valley Tools team.

This essay closely reads Osofisan‘s Tegonni: An African Antigone in the light of its classical antecedent and critically examines the playwright‘s deconstruction of Sophocles‘s Antigone as manifested in the thematic preoccupation, style, linguistic mediums and mythical contents of Tegonni. Through an exploration of the play, the feminist, Marxist and postcolonial agenda of the author is discussed together with his emphasis on local history and oral tradition. In spite of the author‘s recourse to colonial history and other local literary and non-literary materials, this essay argues that the play is still analogous to the classical play as both plays are affiliated in terms of plot, characterisation and ending. The essay ends with the proposition that Osofisan questions existing political and aesthetic structures and traditions, by demystifying supernatural claims on human existence and promoting a radical ideology based on the Marxist convictions of equity and egalitarianism while standing on the Hellenist platform.

We report on how one community builds capacity for disrupting injustice and supporting each other during the COVID-19 crisis. We engaged long-term community partners (parents, their youth, and local community center leaders) in on-going conversation on their experiences with the pandemic. We learned with and from community partners about how and what people in communities most vulnerable in this crisis learn about and respond to COVID-19 in highly contextualized ways, individually and through extended family groups and trusted social networks. We report on how they put understandings towards educated, organized, urgent community infrastructuring actions within informal coalition networks. We explore these actions as necessary localized responses to systemic neglect from dominant institutional infrastructures during a global pandemic.

In this study we identify the differences in goal realisation when applying two conflicting paradigms regarding rule perception and management. We gathered more than 30 scenarios where goal conflicts were apparent in a military operational unit. We found that operators repetitively utilized certain routines in executing their tasks in an effort to realize several conflicting goals. These routines were not originally intended nor designed into the rules and not explicitly included in documentation. They were not necessarily at odds with the literal wording and/or the intent of rules and regulations, although we did find examples of this. Our data showed that local ingenuity was created innovatively within the frame of existing rules or kept invisible to those outside the unit. The routines were introduced and passed on informally, and we found no evidence of testing for the introduction of new risks, no migration into the knowledge base of the organisation, and no dissemination as new best practices. An explanation for this phenomenon was found in the fact that the military organisation was applying a top-down, classical, rational approach to rules. In contrast, the routines were generated by adopting a constructivist view of rules as dynamic, local, situated constructions with operators as experts. The results of this study suggest that organisations are more effective in solving goal conflicts and creating transparency on local ingenuity if they adopt a constructivist paradigm instead of, or together with, a classical paradigm.

The Minangkabau community has various types of unique and distinctive local wisdom. However, with the times, local wisdom is not widely known by the public, especially the younger generation. The marosok tradition in the cattle market is a form of unique Minangkabau local wisdom and is a Minangkabau cultural identity that is full of life values. The purpose of this study is to identify the values of local wisdom in the marosok tradition. This study uses descriptive qualitative research methods. Data collection techniques are interviews, observations, and interviews. The informants of this research are livestock traders, managers, and students of MTsN Palangki. Data analysis techniques are data reduction, data verification, and drawing conclusions. The results show that Minangkabau local wisdom in the marosok tradition is based on the philosophy of "Alam Takambang Jadi Guru". The sale and purchase transaction of livestock using the marosok system which is preserved from generation to generation aims to prioritize mutual benefits, mutual respect, raso jo pareso. This tradition contains entrepreneurial character values, namely hard work, responsibility, persistence, ingenuity, and honesty. This tradition is preserved: 1). culture experience, direct experience in the field, livestock traders teach their children and nephews 2). Culture knowledge, namely introducing this tradition through socialization to the younger generation, film media, cultural tourism, and other traditional activities. So, it can be concluded that the marosok tradition is a characteristic and as a Minangkabau cultural identity that must be preserved through learning in schools.

Abstract As examples of the interpretative capacity, ingenuity, and art of local carvers, Indo-Portuguese altarpieces show how religious-cultural differences could be re-enacted to create new and very particular forms that enriched Indo-Portuguese artistic production. The Northern Province played an important role in the economy of Portuguese India from the sixteenth century until at least the eighteenth century. Although Diu was geographically distant from Goa, the capital of the State of India, and from Bassein, the nearest artistic production center, the artistic panorama in Diu’s churches nevertheless developed to a remarkable extent, and its many hybrid depictions bear witness to artistic-cultural exchanges. Ornamental figurative elements and architectural elements of Portuguese origin were refashioned using the language of local art and its symbols of devotion. In the carvings executed by local artisans, the symbols of local religions were transposed into the Christian decorative grammar with the aim of explaining, through images, the gospel of a new religion to devotees of a religion rooted in centuries of history, resulting in artistic-cultural hybridity.

The article analyzes the author's sociological research results in two villages in the municipality of Kumano, Mie Prefecture, Japan: the fishing village of Hobo and the mountain village of Maruyama. The text aims to clarify the place and role of traditions in the postmodern lifestyle, the mechanisms of their "modernization," and use to revitalize local communities and preserve the Japanese cultural identity by studying their festivals. Local festivals are an essential cultural resource for protecting the traditions of Hobo and Maruyama. The activities for their organization and implementation largely determine the lifestyle of the local community. Their preservation requires both will and perseverance, as well as an innovative approach and ingenuity shown by their inhabitants. Collective action is an important factor in preserving local culture and traditions in Japanese villages. In Hobo, the local community's active life is due to the initiative, efforts and perseverance of its informal leader, and the enterprising local people who help him. In Maruyama, in addition to the enterprising local people and their organizations, the organizational assistance and support of the municipal administration and volunteers from other parts of the country are extremely important. With their initiatives and activities, local communities use the resources of tradition to achieve socially meaningful goals in postmodern conditions.

AbstractDespite Africa’s experience of economic decline, poverty, political instability and disease, keen observers of the cultural landscape have reckoned that cultural productivity in the region is on the rise, leading scholars to refer to the phenomenon as an African Renaissance. This is particularly the case in Kenya where a contemporary art movement is flourishing through both local art worlds and global networks. But the question remains: how in the midst of poverty and political instability can there be so much cultural productivity? Based on field research involving participant observation and interviews with more than 200 artists and cultural workers in Kenya’s capital city, I argue that it is largely due an ‘emergent cultural practice’given the Kiswahili term jua kali. By virtue of jua kali artists ‘making do’ with minimal resources and maximum ingenuity, imagination, originality and entrepreneurial acumen, they are creating art forms or bricolage, which has been largely ignored by art historians, sociologists, and even African scholars. Using jua kali tactics or ‘makeshift creativity,’ artists appropriate art materials, production space, skills training and even marketing sites. The clearest evidence of jua kali ingenuity is what Kenyan artists call ‘junk art’ made from global garbage garnered from local dump sites and junk yards, and then recycled into original works of art, thus reflecting global flows. This genre of contemporary African art has entered what Appadurai calls the mediascape and defies the stereotypical myths of ‘tribal art’ and ‘the primitive other’. These hegemonic myths still pervade most Western art markets, but jua kali artists—members of Kenya’s rising ‘creative class’—are striving to debunk them by their works with increasing success.

The 2019 Hong Kong protests witnessed not only sustained physical demonstrations by locals, but also a swell of online digital media that recorded and remixed conflicts between protestors and police. By documenting key moving images that circulated throughout social media and the film festival circuit, White’s essay reorients Hong Kong film studies’ relationship with the digital. Although cinema played a secondary role in the 2019 protests compared to digital media, numerous intertextual linkages demonstrate the productive potential of considering the two together. Special attention is given to the cops-and-robbers genre, a linchpin in local film history and a frequent form of choice for Hong Kong-mainland China coproductions. While the troubled representation of police in 2019 and beyond suggests that the future of the genre is unstable, the ingenuity of recent digital media demonstrates Hong Kong’s enduring potential for moving image innovation.

When compared to modern lean-type breeds, Portuguese local Alentejano (AL) and Bísaro (BI) pig breeds present a high potential for subcutaneous and intramuscular fat (IMF) deposition which contributes for better meat quality. The aim of this work was to explore the genome function to better understand the underlying physiological mechanisms associated with body fat accretion. Dorsal subcutaneous fat samples were collected at slaughter from adult animals (n = 4 for each breed) with ~150 kg body weight. Total RNA was obtained and sequenced for transcriptome analysis using DESeq2. A total of 458 differentially expressed (DE) genes (q-value < 0.05) were identified, with 263 overexpressed in AL and 195 in BI. Key genes involved in de novo fatty acid biosynthesis, elongation and desaturation were upregulated in AL such as ACLY, FASN, ME1, ELOVL6 and SCD. A functional enrichment analysis of the DE genes was performed using Ingenuity Pathway Analysis. Cholesterol synthesis is suggested to be higher in AL via SREBF2, SCAP and PPARG, while lipolytic activity may be more active in BI through GH and AMPK signalling. Increased signalling of CD40 together with the predicted activation of INSIG1 and INSIG2 in BI suggests that this breed is more sensitive to insulin whereas the AL is less sensitive like the Iberian breed.

In the Chinese technological tradition, no sector, apart from that of agriculture, is as rich in original ideas as naval architecture. Over the past three millennia, hundreds of different types of craft have been developed for use on China's shallow lakes, on its fast flowing rivers and along its often stormy coastal waters. Each type was developed for specific use as a means of transportation, and would seem to represent the ultimate answer to the challenges posed by local conditions. Ultimate answer, that is, within the limitations of the traditional building materials with which these boats were constructed and fitted out. Nor was ingenuity confined to construction techniques.

Many colonial scholars in the 20th century pointed out that agriculture was introduced in the continent from outside, basically Europe and Asia. They refused to accept that African ingenuity had a role to play in the development of agriculture. Premised on this line of thinking, many scholars who studied the Usangu Plains attributed the introduction and development of rice production in the plains to the Baluchi. Drawing from archival, oral and secondary written sources, and working within the framework of local agency and political economy theories, this paper argues that contrary to the popular notions that have attributed irrigated rice farming to the Baluchi community, the establishment of irrigated rice farming in the region was primarily an indigenous initiative of the Sangu. It further recognizes the role-played by the British colonial state in the expansion of irrigated rice farming which has seldom been accounted for by scholars who studied the area under study.

Abstract Cyclone Idai in Zimbabwe exposed deficiencies in the country’s disaster management system. This study uses a phenomenological case exploration of the experiences of local residents in Rusitu Valley following cyclone-induced floods that affected the area in March 2019. Through capturing narratives of participants who were recruited through chain referrals, the research intends to understand how local actors, utilizing their local-based response systems, managed to fill in the voids that characterize disaster management practice in Zimbabwe. Results show that the participation of local “heroes” and “Samaritans,” by deploying their social networks, norms, relationships, practices, and modest ingenuity, helped to speed up response times and minimize threats to lives and livelihoods. Documentation of the stories of local actors about their disaster experiences also gives a richer picture of the Cyclone Idai disaster. Although the community response system also facilitated the operation of external disaster management agencies, their premature withdrawal tended to weaken the trust and values existing in the area, and created tensions between the disaster-affected people and other villagers. Given the delays in formal responses by the government and other external relief agencies, the practices of local actors, although spontaneous and largely uncoordinated, offer rich insights into the design and development of disaster management regimes.

Journalists and media researchers globally are increasingly expressing concern about trends in the news media industry which would appear to suggest a dire future for quality journalism, and thus democracy, in many developed democratic nations. The US State of the News Media report, now produced annually, regularly reports concerns by journalists and editors—and those who study them—about decreasing investment by news corporations in quality journalism (Pew Centre, 2005; 2006; 2007; 2008). The Australian Press Council has presented its own study to mirror that of the Pew Centre in an effort to report on the Australian context (APC, 2006; 2007). The author has, with colleagues from Griffith University, conducted research into the Australian community broadcasting sector for the past nine years. The research conducted since 1999 has been broad but this article will focus on one element of the research—the news and information services of community broadcasting. The community broadcasting sector is worthy of close investigation, because it is one of the few areas of the Australian media landscape that continues to grow. Importantly, quantitative research into the community sector indicates that 57 percent of the Australian population tune in at least monthly to a community radio station—and more than one in four listen at least weekly (McNair Ingenuity, 2008, p. 4). This article investigates the nature of community news offered by the Australian community radio sector through the perspectives of journalists and producers who deliver the news, and the audiences who access it.

A concise and factual abstract This study aims to find out the influence of the use of banana peels in pellet rations to improve the performance of local male rabbits (Lepus nigricollis). The study used 20 local male rabbits that were maintained from 5 to 12 weeks old. The study used Randomized Group Design with 4 treatments and 5 repeats. The treatments in this study are: Rabbit feed that did not contain banana peels (R0), Rabbit feed that contained 5% banana peels (R1), Rabbit feed that contained 10% banana peel (R2), and Rabbit feed that contained 15% banana peel (R3). The results showed no noticeable difference (P>0.05) in the treatment of rations against the ingenuity of dry matter digestibility, energy digestibility, protein digestibility, protein consumption, consumption of dry materials, and Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR). Rabbits who get R1 ration treatment produce the final weight and the weight gain was significantly different (P<0.05) to R0 and R3 treatment, and not significantly different (P>0.05) on R2 treatment. R1 ration consumption is the highest (P<0.05) compared to R0, R2, and R3 treatments. The effect of ration treatment on carcass variables shows results significantly different (P<0.05).

Myoglobinuric renal failure is the classically described acute renal event occurring in disaster environments—commonly after an earthquake—which most tests the ingenuity and flexibility of local and regional nephrology resources. In recent decades, several nephrology organizations have developed response teams and planning protocols to address disaster events, largely focusing on patients at risk for, or with, acute kidney injury (AKI). In this paper we briefly review the epidemiology and outcomes of patients with dialysis-requiring AKI after such events, while providing greater focus on the management of the end-stage renal disease population after a disaster which incapacitates a pre-existing nephrologic infrastructure (if it existed at all). “Austere” dialysis, as such, is defined as the provision of renal replacement therapy in any setting in which traditional, first-world therapies and resources are limited, incapacitated, or nonexistent.

This collaborative multidisciplinary pilot project involving the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), the Ashmolean Museum, and Newham Borough of London, examined the composition of a selection of eighteenth-century porcelain objects by two of London’s first porcelain manufacturers, Bow and Chelsea. As the first science-based public engagement project to be piloted by the V&A, it succeeded in bringing together young Londoners and their communities to investigate local histories of scientific and artistic innovation through the analysis and remaking of eighteenth-century porcelain. Scientific object analysis informed activities with local sixth-form students, revealing the intimate link between art and science, and showcasing the V&A Science Lab as a national hub for heritage science. Public outreach activities, including an exhibition at Stratford Library and workshops for Newham Heritage Month also provided hands-on learning, including curatorial and object-handling experience, and the embodied practices of remaking. Ultimately, this project stimulated new ways of engaging with ceramics collections and explored how the creativity and ingenuity of eighteenth-century ceramics pioneers can provide inspiration for the next generation of makers.

AbstractCongolese commerçantes, or transnational women traders, travel abroad to cities such as Guangzhou in search of affordable products to import to Kinshasa. Without any support from local banks, women must search for the means to finance their trips and navigate a complex bureaucracy governed by unpredictable customs tariffs. Just as men rely on their social networks to ensure the success of their business activities, women traders must also forge relationships with people in positions of power. However, a woman's social network, linked to her business activities, invites assumptions about her sexual morality. Men working within the country's unstable economic landscape are celebrated for their ingenuity and ability to ‘work the system’, while a woman's sexual morality is perceived as being affected by, and bound up in, Kinshasa's corrupt business matrices. Transnational commerçantes are thus not only an important part of the economic milieu, largely governed by patron–client relationships; but are also representative of changing gender dynamics in Kinshasa. Based on multi-site fieldwork in Kinshasa and Guangzhou, this article explores the moral anxieties associated with women's transnational trade, anxieties that relate to broader issues about the politics of social networks within local bureaucratic infrastructures.

Abstract As an influential scholar, the Ming 明 Neo-Confucian master Wang Yangming 王陽明 (1472–1529) was also active in the political world. While showing philosophical ingenuity, Wang launched an ideological movement which reached beyond Neo-Confucian discourse and into the social and political spheres. By promoting his xinxue 心學 teachings, Wang aimed to change Ming political life through fostering a moral retrenchment among future officials. To achieve his goals, Wang Yangming implemented several strategies, such as turning to humble local literati for a following, teaching them as a sitting official, and supporting nonofficial academies with his political power. These strategies succeeded to some extent, in part because the Ming court had relaxed the ideological intolerance of the early Ming. The real-world background of Wang Yangming's success can be further explored by comparing Wang with his two predecessors, Xue Xuan 薛瑄 (1389–1464) and Wu Yubi 吳與弼 (1391–1469).

This case study helps to develop a better overall understanding of the roles and need for managing traditional water management technologies and to focus greater attention towards preserving them. The unique traditional stone spouts of the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, demonstrate human ingenuity in harnessing subsurface flows and are, as well, an example of outstanding social accomplishment in the form of communal collaboration. In addition, in places, some of these spouts are recognised as having significant heritage conservation value and thus contribute, via tourism, to the local and national economy. This study shows the current values of traditional spouts and their connection with social and cultural norms by comparing two spouts in peri-urban heritage areas of the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. Ultimately, it shows that in the presence of an alternative modern piped water supply system, which is inherently unreliable at times, the absence of an appropriate property right system is leading to the ongoing decline in the state of these traditional spout systems.

PurposeSocial enterprise in New Zealand is still in its infancy, with no recognised framework to inform knowledge of current or future developments. In this exploratory paper, the aim is to consider four influences which are shaping the development of social enterprise in New Zealand.Design/methodology/approachA critical‐appreciative lens utilising Habermas' concepts of the lifeworld and system informs the consideration of these influences.FindingsFour distinct cultural and historical influences are proposed as contributing to the scope and “flavour” of social enterprise developing in New Zealand: socio‐cultural norms, e.g. “Kiwi ingenuity”; the neoliberal reforms initiated by successive governments during the 1980s; Crown settlements in relation to breaches of the principles of 1840 Treaty of Waitangi; New Zealanders' as international citizens.Originality/valueThe paper shows how feedback and dialogue across the sectors, at local, national and international levels, is now required to determine how other scholars, practitioners and policy makers perceive this proposed initial framework.

Acupuncture manipulations are clinically important to traditional Chinese medicine, yet the biological mechanisms have not been fully understood. This study aimed to investigate continuous stimulation-induced gene expression changes at stimulated and non-stimulated adjacent acupoints in the same meridian. Catgut embedding into acupoint (CEP) was conducted at acupoint Yanglingquan (gall bladder meridian of foot-shaoyang 34, GB34) of Sprague Dawley rats once or continuously for eight weeks, and gene expression changes at GB34 were assessed by gene chip array analysis 72 h after the last CEP treatment. A total of 688 genes exhibited opposite changes in expression between the two treatments, and 1,336 genes were regulated only by the eight-week CEP treatment. Ingenuity Pathway Analysis revealed that among these differentially regulated genes by one-time and eight-week CEP treatment, insulin-like growth factor-1 pathway and integrin-linked kinase pathway, and Wnt/~ catenin signaling pathway match the observed gene changes to predicted up/down regulation patterns. Upstream analysis further predicted six molecules, namely, tumor necrosis factor, interleukin 1~, interleukin la, kallikrein-related peptidase 5, protein kinase Ca, and catenin ~1. On the other hand, continuous eight-week CEP stimulation at acupoint Xuanzhong (GB39) caused similar changes in the expression of 32 genes at acupoints GB34 and Fengshi (GB31) on the same meridian. Taken together, our results provide the first molecular evidence for the local acupoints' mechanisms for acupoint sensitization theory, and implicate the existence of signaling pathways, either direct or indirect, between acupoints within the meridian GB.

The varied cultural landscape of Polish cities and towns abounds in often unnoticed examples of former coexistence of cultures and religions. The Jewish sukkah, inside which the followers of Judaism would spend 7 days during the autumn holiday of Sukoth, is such a mark that still exists today near many residential buildings. In Poland, due to the climate and culture, the sukkah took the form of wooden or brick structures, walled-off balconies, loggias or verandas, which all featured an opening roof. The hatch was often operated with complex mechanical devices - products of folk engineering and ingenuity. Quite often the shed’s outside was richly decorated. The current state of surviving sukkah, which make a vital element of the cultural landscape of Polish towns, is usually very bad. The knowledge about the sukkah, as an element of Polish cultural heritage, should be promoted and currently existing interest should be exploited. It is vital to initiate the creation of academic and historical studies, strengthen legal protection and teach local authorities, owners and property managers.

Ecosystem restoration is proposed as one aspect of the transformative changes required to meet global sustainability goals. In the prairie region of Canada, where the widespread and relatively recent conversion of natural ecosystems to farmland displaced Indigenous peoples and made way for a thriving agricultural sector, I propose that ecosystem restoration requires two intertwined transition processes: reorienting worldviews to embrace the social and biophysical contexts of local ecosystems, and taking practical steps to restore ecosystem functioning and integrity. Attention to ecosystem functioning—the relational processes that undergird the desired outcomes—can promote the design and implementation of agricultural landscapes that mimic key features of natural ecosystems while maintaining a mix of land uses. Human ingenuity and thoughtful integration of traditional and scientific knowledge are needed to develop locally adapted land use that supports synergetic relationships within and among farm fields and other landscape features. Integrating social goals into the design of agricultural landscapes can spawn creative solutions but will require a shift toward a more open and collaborative approach, especially regarding the use of privately owned lands.

e15709 Background: Neoadjuvant/preoperative chemoradiotherapy in pancreatic cancer has been implicated to induce a local anti-tumor immunity, however the molecular mechanism remains a conundrum. Methods: Two patients’ cohort samples with/without preoperative chemoradiotherapy were used (n = 26 and n = 20, respectively). The treatment-driven immune microenvironment changes were analyzed by stratified bioinformatic approaches i.e. heat map analysis of immune-related genes selected by Gene Ontology, GSEA with Immunologic Signature data base, and Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA). The results were further validated by immunohistochemical approaches. Results: Preoperative treatment induced 212 genes including DC-SIGN (CD209) and 13 immune-associated pathways such as TCR signaling, with an increasing shift of CD8 T-cell population by upregulation of MAL (T-cell differentiation protein). Consistently, immunohistochemical findings showed that the accumulation of DC-SIGN (+) dendritic cells and MAL (+) lymphocytes were significantly increased in patients with preoperative therapy. Conclusions: Preoperative chemoradiotherapy induces a shift toward CD8 T-cell generation mediated by DC-SIGN (+) dendritic cells and MAL (+) lymphocytes, leading to enhance anti-tumor immunity.

In age-related macular degeneration (AMD), both systemic and local zinc levels decline. Elevation of zinc in clinical studies delayed the progression to end-stage AMD. However, the molecular pathways underpinning this beneficial effect are not yet identified. In this study, we used differentiated primary human fetal retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cultures and long-term zinc supplementation to carry out a combined transcriptome, proteome and secretome analysis from three genetically different human donors. After combining significant differences, we identified the complex molecular networks using Database for Annotation, Visualization and Integrated Discovery (DAVID) and Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA). The cell cultures from the three donors showed extensive pigmentation, development of microvilli and basal infoldings and responded to zinc supplementation with an increase in transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) (apical supplementation: 443.2 ± 79.3%, basal supplementation: 424.9 ± 116.8%, compared to control: 317.5 ± 98.2%). Significant changes were observed in the expression of 1044 genes, 151 cellular proteins and 124 secreted proteins. Gene set enrichment analysis revealed changes in specific molecular pathways related to cell adhesion/polarity, extracellular matrix organization, protein processing/transport, and oxidative stress response by zinc and identified a key upstream regulator effect similar to that of TGFB1.

During the past two decades, several cell membrane receptors, which preferentially bind extracellular nucleotides, and their analogs have been identified. These receptors, collectively known as nucleotide receptors or “purinergic” receptors, have been characterized and classified on the basis of their biological actions, their pharmacology, their molecular biology, and their tissue and cell distribution. For these receptors to have biological and physiological relevance, nucleotides must be released from cells. The field of extracellular ATP release and signaling is exploding, as assays to detect this biological process increase in number and ingenuity. Studies of ATP release have revealed a myriad of roles in local regulatory (autocrine or paracrine) processes in almost every tissue in the body. The regulatory mechanisms that these receptors control or modulate have physiological and pathophysiological roles and potential therapeutic applications. Only recently, however, have ATP release and nucleotide receptors been identified along the renal epithelium of the nephron. This work has set the stage for the study of their physiological and pathophysiological roles in the kidney. This review provides a comprehensive presentation of these issues, with a focus on the renal epithelium.

This paper is aimed at analyzing the phenomenon of shoreline retreat in the locality of Rufisque from 1978 to 2018 mainly using geospatial data and field visits. A set of Landsat images from different dates at 10 year intervals was then acquired through the United States Geological Survey platform and shoreline change analysis was run using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System. In addition to that desktop work, interactions with local residents allowed the determination of ongoing adaptation strategies actually in place to cope with coastal erosion. The study showed that Rufisque is subject to serious rates of erosion reaching −19.48 m/year from 1978–1988, close to −8 m/year from 1988–1998, −5.88 m/year from 1998–2008 and −6.67 m/year from 2008–2018. Beside that coastal erosion, it has been noticed that the coastline also experienced in some of its parts cases of accretion reaching 4.94 m/year for 1988–1998, 7.29 m/year from 1998–2008 and 7.68 m/year during the period 2008–2018. In terms of surfaces, Rufisque’ shoreline respectively lost 156.81 ha (1978–1988), 80.55 ha (1988–1998), 6.94 ha (1998–2008), 12.93 ha (2008–2018) and in the same note gained 2.86 ha (1988–1998), 32.51 ha (1998–2008) and 19.16 ha (2008–2018) attesting to the fact that the coastline is subject to both spatiotemporal changes. Finally, this study also reveals that while authorities’ reaction is taking place at much lower pace, local communities are actually using their ingenuity to put in place strategies to tackle coastal erosion.

Union Digital Centre (UDC), an innovative ingenuity of local government authority, represents a predominant nexus for efficient service delivery in rural areas. It has stimulated Information Technology (IT) and provided other internet based needful public and private services to the millions of underserved people’s doorsteps at their convenience. By adopting this new dimension of entrepreneurship framework in rural economy, citizen friendly bottom-up development could be established. However, to introduce such set-up at periphery level, financial and technological support remains a big challenge. Hence, this study reveals the recent conditions and financial affairs of seven selected UDCs at Trishal Upazila. Both primary and secondary sources of data were collected from the studied area and in-depth interview of 23 individuals was taken in qualitative manner. It is observed that without generous financial supports it is very difficult to retain the financial solvency of the entrepreneurs. Sometimes, these massive financial liabilities, lack of logistic support, inadequate training and unskilled manpower are extensively responsible for gradual losing of interest to execute one stop shops services. Therefore, this study also suggested some necessary policy recommendations to strengthen UDC’s activities by successfully executing the Public Private Entrepreneurship model in studied area. The study highlights the cultural and historical significance of arnis or eskrima, the indigenous art of self-preservation developed by the early Filipino natives. As a form of self-defense, arnis or eskrima is deemed to have evolved in the Philippines during the pre-colonial period through ingenuity, multi-cultural interaction, and friendship between them and Asian traders. Arnis is a graceful yet exquisite hand-to-hand and armed routine intended for combat with a peculiar history linked to rebellion and struggles among commoners who sought freedom from the reigning colonizers. It is interesting to report that the symbolic authentic Filipino martial art (F.M.A.), which has been passed on through generations, had eventually reached the pedestal of recognition as a national sport, art, and culture of the Philippines under the Republic Act 9850. Arnis continues to get popular from the local to the international arena, where Filipino grandmasters, masters, and practitioners conduct seminar training and promotional tournaments to brush elbows with their counterparts in high regard and camaraderie. As a sport, it contributes to the physical development, well-being, discipline, and character of the players or practitioners from different walks of life. The Filipino people's sense of nationalism, patriotism, and national identity is reflected in arnis, a part of their rich historical and cultural heritage.

Based on the distribution, molecular similarity and use of Morinda citrifolia L., and occurrence of a wild Morinda species, Southeast Asia and Micronesia have been suggested to be the places where noni originated. The present article discusses the indices used by Vavilov and subsequent authorities on the origin of crop plants to argue that South Asia (Southeast India) has a greater probability of being the centre of domestication/origin for noni than Southeast Asia or Micronesia. The basic reasoning is that economically important plant cannot originate without richness in biodiversity and ingenuity of local people. India with rich floristic diversity, one of the centres of origin of crop plants with a natural distribution of Morinda species, including M. citrifolia L. and its immediate ancestors, has the oldest reference of occurrence, use and cultivation (Vedic literature); therefore, it appears to be the more probable centre of noni's origin. The ancient history of the expansion of Indian culture, religion and trade to Southeast Asian countries corroborate the possible role of Indians in the introduction of noni or knowledge regarding its value to Southeast Asia, from which it was carried to Micronesia and Polynesia, which provided a more favourable environmental niche for perpetuation and use.

The prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) programme is an initiative developed to enable health care practitioners to provide essential care to mothers in order to prevent the transmission of HIV to their infants. However, the PMTCT programme has not been reaching its intended prevention objectives. This paper identifies the social issues that elucidate the gap between PMTCT program goals and the role that Social Innovation could play in improving the status quo. Supporting Social Innovation in health helps reduce infectious diseases by empowering communities to become active participants in their health challenges through local adaptation of global strategies that facilitate the reduction of health system limitations. The article combines a review of the literature with empirical evidence extracted from research that has analyzed the postpartum experiences of mothers living with HIV in the context of the PMTCT program in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, South Africa in 2021. To address the research question, exploratory research has been adopted through a case study. The research is qualitative, exploratory and descriptive based on a case study constructed with secondary data. The results show that Social Innovation contributes to addressing healthcare challenges by providing more personal, analytical and preventive healthcare pathways. In addition, Social Innovation makes a critical contribution to addressing demographic challenges by helping those who are unable to access healthcare. This paper argues that Social Innovation in health is most effective when it occurs from the bottom up, as it is a process that engages the community and connects social change and health improvement through the diverse efforts of local actors. The article demonstrates that having local beneficiaries drive the development of a Social Innovation programme in health results in more viable and sustainable solutions. It also demonstrates that Social Innovation harnesses the ingenuity and willingness of community members, strengthening conventional health service systems and helping to achieve improved and sustainable health services.

According to wikinomics, the decarbonization of the economy it is not possible without the involvement of people’s creativity and ingenuity under the form of prosumption channeled into the public administration. In order to achieve this goal, it is necessary to transform the existing websites of municipal offices into participation platforms that would become the local growth poles concentrating the economic forces operating in a given area. As Adam Smith, the father of economics, noted, synchronization between the economic goals of people and the preferences of local authorities are the main factors of development and the lack of them can create the highest degree of chaos in the economy. Consequently, the research began with defining prosumption and determining the degree of cooperation between society and the public administration sector in the digital sphere. Correspondence analysis was used to analyze the data collected from a survey. The issue of the quality of websites of municipal public administration offices, which in the digital economy function as growth poles and development axes, was also discussed. It was observed that society is prepared to perform the role of prosumers in the public administration sector; however, the low quality of websites constrains full disclosure of society’s prosumer potential. Under these conditions, the best ways to decarbonize the local economy are: (1) acceleration of the digitization of municipal public administration; and (2) use of the already existing infrastructural growth poles and development axes. The first postulate is related to the improvement of the existing, and the construction of new, computer networks. The second point mainly concerns the achievements of molinology, which studies the existing and partially functional infrastructure of former watermills and the location of former windmills. It is a valuable clue that facilitates the location and construction of modern renewable energy sources. The subject of the research is the Warmia and Mazury Province, which includes 116 municipalities and is the fourth largest province in Poland.

Abstract Background: Because of the invasive nature of small cell lung cancer (SCLC), the effectiveness of local therapy for brain metastases (BM) from SCLC had been limited. In this article, we retrospectively evaluated the efficacy of chemotherapy against non-treated BM from SCLC (SCLC-CHT) in compared with TKI for BM from EGFR-mutated NSCLC (EGFR-TKI).Materials and Methods: Un-treated 218 BM, including 58 SCLCs and 160 EGFR-mutated NSCLCs were enrolled. The primary endpoints were maximum response of BM and the duration of effect, and the secondary endpoints were times to the first and maximum responses, patterns of progression and overall survival after the diagnosis of BM.Results: The objective response rate (69%) and disease control rate (92%) of BM after SCLC-CHT were inferior to those after EGFR-TKI (85%, 97%), but were sufficiently satisfactory. Both the times to the first response (0.8m, 95% CI:0.6–0.9) and to the maximum effect after treatment(1.6m, 0.9–1.9) with SCLC-CHT were shorter than with EGFR-TKI (0.9m,0.9–1.0, P=0.011, and 2.4m, 1.9–2.8, P=0.004), but the duration of the response was conversely shorter with SCLC-CHT (5.1m, 4.2–5.6) than with EGFR-TKI (12.3m,9.2–15.1, P<0.0001). The dominant pattern of recurrence was local progression in the both groups. The risk of local progression after SCLC-CHT was higher than after EGFR-TKI (Fine-Gray HR:2.44, 1.56–3.83, P<0.0001), although the risk of new BM was not different between these two groups (0.94, 0.49–1.82, P=0.86). The risk of non-CNS death was higher after SCLC-CHT than after EGFR-TKI (1.8, 1.2–2.7, P=0.004), but the risk of CNS death was not different (0.92, 0.45–1.89,P=0.83).Conclusions: BM from SCLC well and quickly responded to CHT, but the duration of response was short. These responses of BM against CHT was comparable to that of extracranial disease. For the better control of BM and survival of patients, ingenuity to prolong the effect of CHT is required.

Background: In 2016 The Fraser Health Authority's Emergency Network established a priority to standardize patient access and flow through their 13 emergency departments (ED). A Model of Care (MOC) was developed after an extensive review of the literature and current practices across BC. Aim Statement: The ED Model of Care (MOC) specifies best practice expectations with respect to emergency patient access and flow. Rather than a ‘top-down’ mandate of expected practices, the MOC provided the opportunity for site-based teams to promote solutions that were ‘locally actioned and regionally enabled’. Measures & Design: ED Quality Improvement (QI) teams were developed at all sites. The ED Network developed a “QI Bootcamp”, a one-day course focused on imparting tools to drive improvements, providing a baseline understanding of how to launch and sustain local QI initiatives. Using Prosci's change approach, an emphasis was placed on using local ingenuity to implement plans, analyze feedback and diagnose gaps. This approach measured utilization of the changes to tangibly link initiatives and change to specific outcomes. As part of this strategy, an online scorecard was created to measure local results against best practice outcomes. The scorecard tracked quantitative access metrics such as ED Length of Stay (EDLOS), Left Without Being Seen rate, and triage time. Measures such as forming a QI team, identifying a QI project and completing a PDSA cycle were included in the scorecard Evaluation/Results: The MOC change management strategy was launched in May of 2018. By December 2018 all 13 EDs had formed a local QI team and identified a project. Twelve sites had completed at least one PDSA cycle and 10 sites had at least 75% of their members attend the QI Bootcamp. The scorecard displayed improvements in flow metrics. Highlights include the average arrival to triage time decreasing by 36% at one site, EDLOS for moderately ill patients decreased from 4.8 to 3.4 hours at another, and a community hospital had low acuity patient EDLOS decrease from 3.52 to 2.37 hours. Discussion/Impact: A standardized approach to patient access and flow in the ED (MOC), combined with the engaging grass roots approach to inspiring local innovation, allied with a concrete change management approach demonstrated significant results for patients accessing and moving through EDs. This pattern that is more likely to sustain itself because the results are felt and locally owned.

Subject area Financial management, marketing management and entrepreneurship. Study level/applicability The case is suitable for undergraduate students. Case overview The case is based on the ingenuity of the chief protagonist of the case study, Anandam. Anandam had conceived a novel idea of using coconut shells and other biomass material as the fuel for running a woodstove. The case study has its settings in Kerala (India). A tentative business plan is being proposed through the case study, where the market analysis has been done, underscoring the product positioning, market segmentation, pricing and other relevant parameters. Further, the case also lays emphasis on the support provided by a local non-governmental organization, as an initial hand-holding measure. Expected learning outcomes The case study has been written for the purpose of students' appreciating the nuances of new technology/product launch in the market, given the existing competitors. This would help in understanding the 4 Ps better, and, raising a good platform for discussion in the classroom. A financial analysis aspect is also given, which would help students to draw an inter-disciplinary perspective vis-à-vis the case. The case may be extrapolated to other start-up ventures by entrepreneurs. Supplementary materials Teaching notes are available for educators only. An important aspect in the development of the local economy is MSMEs' ability to support productive human resources, allowing people to live their lives as a means of earning a living. Entrepreneurship is characterized by the ability to transform current resources into goods and selling points via the use of ingenuity. The Covid-19 pandemic sparked the growth of micro, small, and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs). The pandemic of Covid-19 has slowed most economic sectors, particularly MSMEs. Many MSME performers are unable to grow and end up in bankruptcy because of the overabundance. This is the reason why small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) are embracing digitization initiatives. Using a marketplace (intermediary) and social media as a marketing strategy is the method of digitalization. Digital MSME players must also be able to collaborate with netizens in promoting their goods and services, as outlined in this article. Because of this, the digital MSME development strategy is a viable option to safeguard small businesses from the Covid-19 pandemic. This article uses a process known as a literature review to examine numerous works on the growth of digital small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). According to this article, amid the Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia, the growth of digital MSMEs has emerged as a viable option for saving and establishing a digital enterprise.
