Повний текст джерелаThe arts of love and the conduct books are two literary traditions that were very much in vogue between the 13th and the 15th centuries. Thanks to their celebrity and longevity, they helped to shape the thinking of the period and beyond.Under the definition of "arts of love", which can be applied to a wide range of texts on erotic subjects, we are considering translations, or even adaptations, of Ovid's Ars amatoria, which instructs lovers to master the techniques of love, from the first approach to the completion of the sexual act. Written during the reign of Augustus, Ovid's work caused scandal even at the time of its publication, condemning the author to exile. From the 12th century onwards, during a period known as the aetas Ovidiana, it enjoyed a veritable renaissance. It was translated and reprinted by the most famous medieval authors, including Chrétien de Troyes, Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun. In our thesis, however, we will focus mainly on the five translations of the Ars by little-known or anonymous authors - still relatively little studied by critics -, all of which are different from one another. As for conduct books (from the English conduct literature), these are treatises on secular life, written primarily for young people. Here, we are interested in texts aimed at young women, covering the whole social scale, from queens and princesses to common women and even prostitutes, as in Christine de Pizan's Livre des Trois Vertus. We know some of the patrons of these works, such as Isabelle, the eldest daughter of Louis IX, Queen Jeanne de Navarre, who was addressed by her confessor Durand de Champagne, and Suzanne, the daughter of Anne de France. Among the texts in our corpus are some very famous ones, such as the work of Christine de Pizan and the Livre du Chevalier de la Tour Landry (the Book of the Knight of the Tower), and others less studied by critics, including one that has come down to us in three different versions and of which we are offering the first edition. The two literary traditions could not be more different, but the interest of comparing them is that, contrary to all expectations, the books of conduct present the discourse of the arts of love in an underlying way. The authors of books of conduct were in fact aware of the erotodidactic discourse so much in vogue at the time, which they condemned, while taking it up ex negativo to better teach their protégées to guard against the perils of extramarital love. To analyse the influence of the Ovidian discourse in the educational treatises, this study is based on the individual stages of the amorous journey in the tradition of the gradus amoris, namely visio, allocutio, tactus, osculum and factum. This approach allows us to touch on all the nuances of love, since its degrees can all be associated with the five senses and parts of the body, making it easier to delve into other areas. In this way, we explore fashion, table manners and the expectations that men have of women in both discourses, to arrive at the deconstruction of courtly love operated by the books of conduct. The expectations of the two discourses are based on the ideal image that their authors have of women; by cross-referencing them, however, our analysis provides an insight into the real and more complex lives of French women in the Middle Ages and their relationship with men.Understanding the formation of these ideal images and the conception of women, of which the texts in our corpus are both a reflection and a means that enabled them to be disseminated, is fundamental to grasping the age-old vestiges that are still with us today, opposed by women's emancipation movements such as #MeToo and No Means No

Повний текст джерелаFamous for its old civilization, korea first adopted the chinese classical language as a writing system, approximatively 2000 years ago. Thus, all the ancient korean documents are written in chinese characters. Althouh quite a large number of written materials have been destroyed due to various reasons (wars, fires, disasters. . . ), some have been preserved and represent precious sources of information. Through the study of these remaining documents (titles, citations, diplomatic reports, religious texts), we have been able to give an overall picture of what has been "the book" in korea up to the xiith century. Besides, this dissertation represents an appreciable source of information about the history of the different kingdoms which were prevalent on the korean peninsula until the xth century and the way they administrated their land and people

Повний текст джерелаThe Middle ages occupy a considerable place in children literature. Since 1945 almost six hundred texts for children have appeared in France containing medieval setting. Theis bounty may be explained in several ways. These texts do not refer to the " true " Middle Ages, rather, they elaborate an image of the Middle Ages that is consensual, coherent, and static, completely devoted to the deployment of agreed-upon fictions. Autonomous, like a " country " one mitht visit, these Middle Ages of fiction respond to the demands of its young readers in terms of intelligibility and ethics. The large number of medieval fictions is also explained by the ease with which they are created. Having recourse to proven literary procedures for a literature of the mases, these works wallow in the cliché. This reveals, incidentally, an ambiguity they have in relation to their pedagogical function such that they are able to satifsy the eventually contradictory wishes of their double audience : young readers, ane directing /supervising adults. Such stories, superficially altered by the tides of this half century, are a model of formal consistency. Finally, the success of Middles Ages literature with children may be found in its dominating figure : the knight, fictional hero and inheritor of an ancient literary tradition from the Middle Ages to Romanticism, from King Arthur to Ivanhoe. This childrens literature is made up, in a large part, of adaptations in which authors tirelessly take up the same founding characters. The seduction of the armored knight is explained by the symbolism which these texts put into play through a number of constantly re-worked matrices. One by one, the knight represents the carefree early-childhood years, the troubling pre-adolescent years, and triumphang maturity. These texts have a discours on adulthood and the need to grow upt̂hat children (and perhaps above all boys) always wish to hear, no matter the time or age

Повний текст джерелаThis dissertation tries to state the social, cultural, material and ideological context of the development of the uses of book in the XIVth and XVth centuries french nobility. We establish a group of book owners, authors, poets and private diaries writers. Its analysis underlines the importance of familial assets, based on the handing down of a material and cultural heritage, and the working out of new literacy standards, especially among noble people linked with princely courts. Then, we identify the main features of noble culture, divided between its functional purposes, the assimilation of some parts of clerical knowledge and the expression of personal tastes and interests. The main originality of noble literature, conceived to answer the crisis of late Middle Ages, rests in its pragmatism. The deep integration of literacy in aristocratic way of life and ideology denies the supposedly incompatibility of sword and book

Iconography is inspired of text which accompanies picture, to come from other manuscripts different from antiphonaires or not to have report with the text. We analysed the style of picture to know different influence, as well as code of colours. The studies period stretches from VIIth till XIV centuries. We studied the common points or difference which there can be between the antiphonaires different and try to understand if the concepteur of picture wanted to get a particular message, knowing that normally antiphonaires is devoid of pictures

Повний текст джерелаContrary to their Alsatian, franciliens or auvergnats counterparts, the stone castles of northern Burgundy remain ignored. Nevertheless, they deserve interest, whether it is from a historical, geographical, architectural or archaeological point of view. Due to the lack of comprehensive studies on Burgundian castles, this study will use of an already well documented site to create a reference site. Various opportunities, which the realization of archaeological excavations drove us to choose that of Noyers-sur-Serein to bring to a successful conclusion this initiative. It is based on many documents including narrative sources, inventories and 61 countable registers dating from 14th and 15th centuries. Archaeological documentation is lacking because the site was completely destroyed at the end of the 16th century, but it is based nevertheless on the excavation of two towers and a section of curtain. This study approaches the castle in several scales. In a wide scale, in its territory as in a fine scale, in its details. It also approaches underestimated aspects as the buildingyard

M. Tours, Ms 193 » joins in this scripturary and iconographic tradition. Composite manuscript (Sacramentary of 1180, Antiphonary of XIIIth century, historic documents of the XIIIth-XIVth centuries), witness of experimentations in the constitution of missals, its study revealed a liturgical alcuinian inheritance. Its ornementation gives evidence of a martinian worship, apostolic, marial, christologic, trinitarian, revelation of an assertion of the martinian community in front of powers present in the city (bishop, burgess), plea for united Ecclesia. This codex « B. M. Tours, Ms 193 » embodies Memoria of Saint-Martin of Tours, glorifying its place of realization, its community, restoring, for XIIth century, an untold prestige after Alcuin

Повний текст джерелаThe prayers and meditations of s. Anselm of Canterbory (1109) is a major reflection of the changes that took place in the 11th century medieval western spirituality. By recreating a link to the practices of classical philosophy and by transforming at its essence the genre of private prayer, Anselm offered medieval literature a crowning master piece to its own laborious and fertile evolution since Carolingian times. A victim of its own success, the Anselmian prayers and meditations were rapidly expended upon by new texts from the very beginning of the 12th century. To the twenty three original texts, successive copyists and editors of the prayers and meditations added many prayers by well-known authors, such as ralph of battle, john of fecamp or aelred of rievaulx and by several anonymous authors. The 17th century edition by dom G. Gerberon, reprinted in patrologia latina (pl 158), includes no less than one hundred and eleven texts. This work therefore has two objectives : first to present the history of this complex work in order to attempt to explain its origin by showing 12th century manuscripts all the while situating the book in its literary tradition ; second by studying more than 100 manuscripts, this work offers a critical study and a translation of 12th century Anselmian apocrypha. The latter, situated at the very origin of later editions, represent the most interesting part of Anselmian apocrypha in so far as the emanate from Anglo-Norman monastic milieus contemporary to Anselm. These texts form an interesting ensemble of witnesses to 12th century private devotion prayer unedited since the 17th century

Повний текст джерелаThe notes written by Petrarch during his readings, which have been studied very little by critics, are a privileged proof of his cultural basis and his thought, not meant for anybody else but himself. On the one hand, his annotations confirm his love for antiquity, apparent in his notes, which arrange and compare the information deduced from both the pagan and Christian auctores. On the other hand, the footnotes to Fathers of the Church reveal Petrarch’s specific interest in some theological themes which were heatedly debated in Avignon during the 1300s such as visio beatifica, paupertas Christi, grace, free will and justification. Although Petrarch does not broach these themes in his own writings, his annotations allow us to deepen our understanding of his relationship with these authors who were not only for him a solid point of reference for moral considerations and understanding of the Scriptures, but also writers with whom he could compare himself from a literary point of view. These footnotes, therefore, allow access to Petrarch’s “writing laboratory” in which he is both reader and writer in constant contact with other texts as well as with his own public

Повний текст джерелаThe Middle Ages did not consider botany to be a specific discipline. Yet the period was prolific in scholarly works on the world of plants. The encyclopaedias, herbals and agronomic texts that were produced and distributed from the twelfth to the end of the fifteenth century focused on plants and their uses. These works have comparable textual structures, making it possible to bring them together in a coherent corpus. While practical uses (therapeutic, dietetical or agronomical) do indeed occupy a central place, these works do not confine themselves to a purely practical understanding of plants, but do show an interest in the plants themselves. Both botanical texts and iconography were part of the construction of a scientific discourse specific to the period. This study focuses on one of the categories of plants, the tree. Medieval naturalists considered this category in terms of the multiplicity of different species that it contains, all of which needed to be named, described and ordered. Defining the tree was also an issue for authors of the period, revealing the working methods of the naturalists and the specific characteristics of medieval botany

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis aims at the comparative study of libraries of laity and clerics in the north of France and northern Italy between 1400 and 1520. The relations between the French and Italian territories are no longer to be demonstrated, marked for the beginning of our period by the progressive resolution of the Great Schism and, for the end, by the Italian wars between 1494 and 1516. In the fifteenth century and up to the beginning of the sixteenth century, cultural phenomena of the first order such as dissemination of humanism and, on the material level, the invention of printing spread throughout Europe. We have chosen to focus on "traditional" categories of possessors such as the secular clergy, but also to emerging categories of possessors, including the bourgeoisie

Повний текст джерелаIn a first part entitled "art in the service of faith", the author's project is brought to light. Beyond the translation and versification of the Latin miracles the purpose is to pass a religious message centered round incarnation and Mary’s mercy. Narration is in the service of preaching. It transmits and illustrates a popular catechism on the essential points of faith. The aesthetics of the miracles by Gautier is related to "the art of the cathedrals" (G. Duby). The satire is linked to this didactic and reforming project. It is in keeping with the moral tradition of criticism of "estats du siècle". The clergy is the first to be aimed at. The search for truth is accompanied by a lyrical commitment in which the past time is brought back to life. The writer is involved in a violent controversy with the profane literature of his time. He nevertheless borrows from it its processes and its set of themes to convert them to the service of Mary. In a second part "a literature to the service of pleasure", we study the different types of plots, the characters, comedy and irony, the forms of pathos and of the supernatural, which have made the success of a both sacred and popular literature. The poetic techniques, in which an unrivalled virtuosity is played, reveal a humorous writer and a mystical artist. In "the delights of the verb" (ch. IX), faith and pleasure are joined together

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis studies a corpus of 157 manuscript miscellanies used in France and in England between the 13th and the 15th century, and which contents, mostly in French or in English, are somehow diverse. Through the codicological analysis of the material form and the contents ofthose miscellanies, this thesis aims at understanding their mode of composition and the diversity of the readers's interests in vernacular matters. The firsl part explains the way the manuscripts were selected, the categories used to classify their texts, and the different physical types of miscellanies. A comprehensive typology of those miscellanies is then proposed. The second part focuses on the importance of miscellanies in the global manuscript production , and on the logic of their composition through the use ofbooklets, tillers and notes. The third part of this thesis studies the interests, the cultural framework and the writing habits ofreaders as they are revealed in the corpus.First, their interests are tentative ly confronted to their social starus. Then, a comparison between the ways history was received in France and in England shows a divergence in this regard. The pragmatic habits and tastes ofEnglish readers is then studied in its social and historical context, as are the interactions between law, medicine and vemacular culture

Повний текст джерелаThe possibility to study Books of Hours and Prayer Books of a determined family group like deposits of memory and personal and lineage identity is the main goal of this thesis which is centered in the analisys of thirty books of religious carácter, being them mainly books of hours and prayer books, that belonged to members of the same family group extended through time (XIVth and XVth Centuries), that is to say, the family entourage of Catherine of Cleves, Duchess of Guelders (1417-1476). This family group is articulated as an ancestral community held by strong bonds of kinship as well as a devotional community. These bonds, that articulate the identity and the culture of the individual, are by different ways projected in the books of hours, a privileged instrument of private devotion. In this way, these ones, are constituted in actual deposits and vehicles of identity and the memory of their possessor. The present study is organized in three parts which progressively advance towards the definition and characterization of the family group to which belonged Catherine of Cleves, particularly marked by the influence of the House of Burgundy, passing through the definition of the corpus of manuscripts to enter, finally, in the analysis of the differents ways that permits to consider book of hours as a locus of identity and memory (locus memoriæ)

Повний текст джерелаIf the issue of violence at the end of the medieval era was amply treated by historians, the techniques of that violence have not benefited from the same attention. If we know that the warriors fight, we do not know specifically how they fight, and especially how they transmit this knowledge. But martial arts, their exercise and education seem to be a reality in the Europe of the late Middle Ages. Since roaming fencing masters of the imperial space down to princes preparing a possible judicial duel, it's a whole section of the medieval gestures and body culture that this work seeks to explore.Through the analysis of a corpus of manuscripts, exclusively dedicated to the description of gestures and fighting techniques of the XVth and XVIth centuries, this study proposes to address the issue of martial arts from different angles. First, the establishment of a comprehensive catalog will show the reality of these documents. Through a quantitative analysis of the latter, the reader could then observe how this set of manuscripts builds, spreads and goes out gradually during the XVIth century. Through these groups of texts, the notion of cultural and martial tradition will be discussed in order to show the reader that these works are sometimes much more than technical abstracts. Finally, a presentation of the material and social environment in which these martial arts are practiced will allow a breakthrough in the place of these martial cultures in the history of the body and gesture to the late Middle Ages

Повний текст джерелаCentered on the reign of the first three Valois (1328-1380), this thesis aims to study the construction, functioning and practices of the social group formed by the notaries and secretaries of the French royal chancellery. It is based on the combined examination of their scriptural practices and their experiences. This work is based on the study of the totality of the chancery registers of Philippe VI, Jean le Bon and Charles V. At the center of textual archeology, these documents are treated as units of meaning composed of several layers of human actions ranging from their creation to the 19th century. A comparative study with registers of civil Parliament is being conducted to determine whether one or more arts of registry within the royal administration are implied. The extra sigillum entries, the signature and the personal seals of several notaries and secretaries are also analysed. These personal markers give us access to administrative practices as well as to the expression of an individuality. In full expansion under the first three Valois, the ornamentation of the charters and registers is also the subject of a study. A practice related to the two documentary genres, it develops a visual rhetoric over time. The careers of some twenty notaries and royal secretaries are finally apprehended in order to highlight the characteristics and points of cohesion of this professional group that became a brotherly community following the creation of their confraternity in March 1351

Повний текст джерела« The Monasteries Books » (kutub al-Diyārāt) are the object of this thesis; they are thematic anthologies of medieval time. They describe the stays of Muslims in Christian monasteries in pursuit of entertainment.Of those anthologies, originally composing half a dozen titles, only one book has reached us: the book untitled al-Diyārāt by al-šābuštī. The other works have only reached us through extracts found in secondhand books. This thesis attempts to fill in the gaps in this documentation by restoring the extracts from the lost works. This work of restoration is paralleled with an examination of the “genre” notion. The author, through a chronological perspective, sheds a light on the evolution of the writing that has come about from authors such as Ibn al-Kalbī (m. 821) or al-šābuštī (m.998), but also al-ḫālidiyyān, al-Iṣbahānī, al-Sarī al-Raffā’, al-šāmšāṭī and Ibn Ramḍān al-Naḥwī. This evolution is studied with the same approach as the history of science, mentioned in this study through the concept of paradigm. The attempt is to show that this particular literary “genre” has known, through those authors, a genesis, a rise and a peak before conflicting with new anomalies causing its paradigmatic decomposition

Повний текст джерелаThe City of God, commissioned by Charles V and completed around 1375 by Raoul de Presles, is an important reference to the late Middle Ages. The iconography of three manuscripts illustrated by the Parisian illuminator Maître François, in the last third of the fifteenth century (Paris, BNF, fr 18-19;. Paris, Bibl Sainte-Geneviève, 246 ms;. The Hague, Meermanno-Westreenianum Museum 10 a 11 and Nantes, Biblio. munic., 8 ms), delivers a particularly interesting light on how this text could be read. After a preliminary chapter recalling the role of the De Civitate Dei in medieval thought, the first part analyzes how the first French translation with matching commentaries inflects the Augustinian text toward an encyclopaedic and political dimension. However its illustrated tradition, between 1375 and 1370, reveals the particular modalities of appropriation by the laity. The second part focuses on the corpus. Their historical and codicological presentation established, the study seeks to define the coherence of the common cycle to the three witnesses in a text and image rapport; and to establish the uniqueness of the codex The Hague-Nantes whose completeness deepens the respective share of the translation and commentaries, but also other textual sources in the design of the illustration .The third part addresses the issue of the processes involved and models used by the artist to realise this complex imaging; and this analysis can detect the influence of the sponsor in the development of the "unicum" and its appropriation of the text. The City of God then became an emblem, a "mirror of the prince" and therefore the chosen series heralds the end of tradition illustrated text

Повний текст джерелаThe first book to be printed in Venice was published in 1469. Between this date and the 1530s, the printing industry expanded and Venice became the first production hub in Europe for incunabula. On the one hand, printing was a new trade, which was established in Venice outside of the guild system. Printers and booksellers managed to build their commercial network gradually, by either building upon the pre-existing manuscript network, or by creating their own commercial system. Since that activity was entirely new, there were many uncertainties and inequalities as far as the status of the printers was concerned, all the more so since they had to adapt to the local social context. On the other hand, most Venice-based printers were in fact foreigners. During the first years, they were mainly of German origin, although other minorities or communities also contributed to the development of the industry. Theirs was a very precarious and unstable activity. Hence the need to understand how these craftsmen and merchants organized themselves, which also raises the related question of whether and how they integrated into Venice’s urban geography and sociability. Finally, this thesis aims at questioning the existence of a Venetian printing world between 1469 and 1530, and at examining the construction of a professional milieu based on printing and the selling of printed books. I wish to understand how this new industry, shaped by foreigners, managed to take root and grow in the city; how the actors interacted with the institutions and the legislation; and how they integrated into Venice’s social fabric

Повний текст джерелаThe transmission of secular knowledge, particularly that inherited from antiquity, was dynamic in Constantinople during the Macedonian era. However, this intellectual effervescence did not seem to have the same echo in provincial areas such as Hellenic-speaking southern Italy (with the exception of Terra d'Otranto). The small number of secular Greek manuscripts produced and circulated in this peripherical province in the 10th and 11th centuries prior to the Norman Conquest bears witness to this situation. Despite its limited quantity, the corpus of local secular Greek manuscripts presents a rich thematic diversity, including works of grammar, rhetoric, lexicography, scientific calculation, civil law, medicine, as well as ancient literature and philosophy. The in-depth examination of each manuscript in this corpus, through the prism of the “stratigraphic” method that integrates paleographical, codicological and philological data, enables us to establish as complete a picture as possible of their local production and circulation between the 10th century and the first half of the 11th century. This work reveals how these book manuscripts and secular knowledge were integrated and used within local society, revealing an aspect often obscured by historical sources. Furthermore, the comparison of this Byzantine secular corpus with that of the Norman-Swabian era illustrates the durability of the local Byzantine heritage, while highlighting the appearance of novelties characteristic of the Norman-Swabian period within local secular culture

Повний текст джерелаThis dissertation focuses on Mahzor Vitry, the major sources for Jewish liturgy in Northern France. Written at the end of the 11th century by a pupil of rashi, Simhah ben Samuel of Vitry, this book is considered to be a liturgical-halakhic compendium, rather than a traditionnal mahzor. Ten surviving of Mahzor Vitry produced between the 12 th and 14th centuries have been identified so far. The main goal of this study is to examine this collectionof manuscripts, to descripe their sctructure, their textual transmissions and dual nature, not only as a prayer book, but also as a study book. An expansion in the breath of these manuscripts is visible from the first half of the 13th century onward, when texts pertaining to Jewish law, custom, ethics, midrash, science, mysticism, as well as premonitory and calendrical texts, are integrated as literary addenda into the liturgical-halakhic core of theses manuscripts. Furthemore, a comparative analysis of six additionnal Ashkenazi Demonstartes that the dual nature of these books is not limited to Mahzor vitry, but can also be found in the literary genre of liturgical-halakhic encyclopaedias, unique to the geographical region of Ashkenaz until the 15th century. Subsequently, inquiries on the impact of ancient Jewish mysticism and the layout of Christian manuscripts on the Mahzor Vitry manuscripts are also made, thus presenting this work in its historical and literary context, as a landmark of intellectual creativity in medieval Ashkenaz
