The joint EDBT/ICDT conference (International Conference on Extending Database Technology / International Conference on Database Theory) is a well established conference series on data management, with annual meetings in the second half of March that attract 250 to 300 delegates. Three weeks before EDBT/ICDT 2020 was planned to take place in Copenhagen, the rapidly developing Covid-19 pandemic led to the decision to cancel the face-to-face event. In the interest of the research community, it was decided to move the conference online while trying to preserve as much of the real-life experience as possible. As far as we know, we are one of the first conferences that moved to a fully synchronous online experience due to the COVID- 19 outbreak. By fully synchronous, we mean that participants jointly listened to presentations, had live Q&A, and attended other live events associated with the conference. In this report, we share our decisions, experiences, and lessons learned.

Анотація:
Eight species of spiny lobster (six littoral and two deep-sea) and two species of slipper lobster constitute the lobster fishery of India. Lobster landings fluctuate around 2000–3000 t annually. High export demand for Indian spiny lobsters has resulted in regular and organized exploitation, both inshore and offshore. Almost the entire quantity of lobsters landed in India is exported in frozen, cooked or live form. Export of live lobsters, which realize the maximum unit price, has increased from 22 t in 1994 to 97 t in 1996. Live transport of spiny lobsters has advanced from just keeping them alive for a few hours in moist intertidal beach sand to the most sophisticated packing in insulated boxes. The process involves holding the lobsters at the landing centre and at the city of export. The entire exercise lasts about seven days, during which period the lobsters are packed twice, each time keeping them out of water for not less than 20 h. In the holding centres, the lobsters are often kept at high densities, with the resulting build-up of nitrogenous wastes and depletion of dissolved oxygen leading to mortalities. Average mortality is up to 6.5% during live transport.

On December 7,1999, a divided Oklahoma Supreme Court held in Nealis v. Baird that a claim may be brought under Oklahoma's wrongful death statute on behalf of a nonviable fetus born alive. The decision represents a departure from the traditional notion that “viability”—the ability of a fetus to sustain life outside the womb with or without medical assistance—is the standard for wrongful death recovery. In replacing the “viability” standard with a “live birth” standard, the majority maintained that live birth is the “unassailable point at which legal rights must be said to attach to the human person. “ By holding a nonviable fetus a legal “person” for the purpose of a wrongful death claim, the court's decision emphasizes the limited application of the United States Supreme Court's holding in Roe v. Wade that a fetus is not a person for the purposes of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Abstract. Strategies for quantifying heat loss of broilers on live-haul trailers would be beneficial, particularly under conditions of environmental extremes. We have developed an electronic chicken (a self-contained, temperature-controlled heat source) to simulate the sensible heat loss of a live broiler during the transit and holding periods in commercial live-haul trips. The simulated electronic chicken is an aluminum box, having surface area equivalent to a 2.3 to 2.8 kg broiler chicken (0.13 m2), with a thermostatically controlled power source to maintain the internal temperature at 41°C (typical broiler core body temperature). Different cover materials were tested to identify an appropriate cover that resulted in measured values of electronic chicken heat production being similar to published values of sensible heat production for broilers. A double layer of fleece fabric provided a reasonable match. The sensible heat loss of the electronic chickens exhibited positive correlation with exposed wind, and a positive correlation with temperature gradient between internal and external environment. Wetting the fabric cover of electronic chickens only slightly increased heat loss as compared to the dry fabric cover. Wet fabric cover experienced lower heat loss than that expected from the wetted surface of a live chicken, therefore heat loss under the wet scenario would be underestimated. Electronic chickens were installed in modules on trailers with live chickens during commercial live-haul process under various environmental conditions and different management practices. Measured heat losses from electronic chickens were in the range of 8.2 to 20.3 W with outside temperature of -17°C to 3.0°C in winter, and 4.5 to 6.7 W with 28°C to 34°C in summer. Based on literature-reported sensible heat loss under thermoneutrality, it was determined that the measured air temperature inside the live-haul modules on the trailer in the range of 11°C to 25.1°C during transit (outdoor temperature range of 1.7°C to 22.2°C) and 5.3°C to 21.7°C during holding (outdoor temperature range of -9.1°C to 19.8°C) would allow the live chickens to regulate heat by their metabolism and stay comfortable. For the holding period, the winter trips were mostly in the zone of thermal comfort. In summers, hyperthermic conditions were possible during transit, although additional cooling due to surface wetting of birds as a result of misting (on the farm prior to beginning the transit) could have been beneficial but not detectable by electronic chickens. The electronic chickens can be used effectively as a model to evaluate and identify conditions that cause thermal stress conditions during live-haul conditions and to design systems and strategies to alleviate that stress. Abstract The influence of site and stand conditions on pine false webworm (Acantholyda erythrocephala [L.], Hymenoptera: Pamphiliidae) population densities and host damage was evaluated in 22 eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.) stands in northern New York State. Mean pine false webworm density was positively related to stand size (ha) and inversely related to soil silt content (A-horizon) after holding stand size constant. Percent radial growth loss (during the first five years after defoliation began) was inversely related to soil carbon content (B-horizon) and inversely related to fine sand content (A-horizon) after holding B-horizon carbon constant. Severe radial growth suppression (missing or discontinuous growth rings) and white pine mortality were inversely related to live crown ratio. The frequency of trees with missing growth rings was inversely related to soil nitrogen (A-horizon) after holding live crown ratio constant. Stands located on sandy glacial lake shoreline/delta deposits had more coarsely textured soils with lower levels of organic matter and nitrogen and had slower height growth rates, lower tree diversity, greater relative dominance of white pine, and higher levels of pine false webworm defoliation than stands on adjacent landforms. These results may be useful to foresters managing eastern white pine stands in areas where similar site and stand conditions predominate and pine false webworm occurs.

The objective of this study was to examine the prevalence of Salmonella enterica in cull sows at various stages from the farm to the abattoir. Cull sows (n = 181) were sampled over 10 weeks. Fecal samples (10 g each) were collected on the farm ca. 24 h before loading and at the live-hog market ca. 3 h before loading. Samples (ileocecal lymph nodes, cecal contents, feces from the transverse colon, ventral thoracic lymph nodes, subiliac lymph nodes, sponge swabs of the left and right carcass sections, and chopped meat) were collected at the abattoir. The percentages of positive fecal samples on the farm and at the live-hog market were 3% (5 of 181 samples) and 2% (3 of 181 samples), respectively. After transport from the live-hog market (10 h) and holding at the abattoir (6 h), 41% (74 of 180) of cull sows yielded S. enterica in one or more sampled tissues. The isolation rate for total cecal contents (33%; 60 of 180 samples) was significantly (P < 0.05) higher than those for ileocecal lymph nodes (7%; 12 of 181 samples), feces (11%; 20 of 181 samples), and ventral thoracic and subiliac lymph nodes (2%; 4 of 181 samples). Before a 2% lactic acid carcass wash (lasting 8 to 9 s), 14% (25 of 180) of carcasses were positive, compared with 7% (12 of 179) after the wash (P < 0.05). Two S. enterica serotypes, Derby and Infantis, were found on the farm and at the live-hog market. At the abattoir, 12 serotypes that had not previously been found on the farm or at the live-hog market were recovered. The results of this study demonstrate that transport and holding practices may contribute to an increase in S. enterica infection prior to slaughter to levels much higher than those found on the farm.

After a comparative review of the situation in art and music with respect to emotion research, three innovative, interactive and emotion-sensitive artworks are described. The Emotion Light (2009) is an interactive biofeedback sculpture in the shape of a light-emitting uterus that responds by changing color depending on the arousal level of the person holding it. In a State (2014) and BioCombat (2015) are generative, interactive live performance systems that detect emotion from audio or live biosignals, respectively, and create abstract animations and electroacoustic music in response.

In Portuguese coastal areas, crabs and lobsters maintained alive until prepared for the table are commercially and economically very important. The trade in live crustaceans, mostly imported animals, is an interlinked and complex chain, from fishing, collection, holding facilities, and transportation, to the end-consumer, the various facilities playing a key role. Along the chain, animals can be affected by several stressors, inducing high mortality with consequent economic loss, and contributing to unsustainable exploitation of the resource. A survey was developed to characterize storage, transportation, and handling issues affecting various crustaceans at Portuguese holding facilities. In all, 22 facilities were identified and categorized by activity and water supply system. Despite the wide variation in their infrastructure, there were no major differences in mortality rate of crustaceans between importers, wholesalers, and exclusively retailers. At all facilities, Necora puber, Cancer pagurus, and Carcinus maenas had higher rates of mortality and shorter duration of captivity than Maja spp., Homarus sp., Panulirus regius, or Palinurus sp. Overall, the main problems identified were technical issues related to careless handling, high animal density, and the varying physiological needs of each species.

Oyster (Crassostrea gigas) and water samples from Live Holding Tanks at five different Seattle area retail markets were analyzed for microbiological quality indicators and for potential pathogens monthly from March to September, 1987. Aeromonas hydrophilia was the most frequently isolated potential pathogen in this study with a higher incidence in oysters (78%) compared to water (53%). Vibrio cholerae non 01 and V. fluvialis were isolated from oyster samples from two different markets but not from water. V. alginolyticus was isolated from 53% of the water samples but was not found in any of the oysters. One oyster sample had a non-pathogenic Yersinia entercolitica. Yersinia spp. were isolated from oyster samples from one tank at two sampling periods. Salmonella typhimurium was isolated from one oyster sample. Samples were examined for Listeria spp. during the August sampling period and none were detected. The aerobic plate count was similar for both oyster and water samples and averaged 2000 CFU/gm. Total coliform levels were significantly higher (P<.05) for oysters (525MPN/100gm) compared to water (11MPN/100ml). The degree of water turbidity, crowding and species diversity varied between markets and sampling periods.

Survival of naturally occurring larvae of Anisakis simplex in fresh arrowtooth flounder (Atheresthes stomia) was determined after storage for specified periods at four freezing temperatures. All larvae were killed by 96, 60, 12, and 9 h at temperatures of −15, −20, −30, and −40°C, respectively. The average percentages of live larvae per fillet at the next shortest holding time were as follows: 72 h at −15°C, 0 to 3%; 48 h at −20°C, 11 to 30%; 9 h at −30°C, 5%; and 6 h at −40°C, 0 to 3%. Larval survival was directly related to fillet thickness or weight (P ≤ 0.05). Larval death was directly correlated to freezing temperatures. Holding time necessary to kill larval nematodes decreased as storage temperature decreased.

Abstract Persimmon trees, Diospyros virginiana L. growing along roadsides and in home landscapes and infested with Fall webworm, Hyphantria cunea (Drury) were selected for treatment. Test materials were applied 19 Aug to active webworm colonies by spraying individual webs and surrounding foilage to runoff with hand-pumped, compressed-air sprayers. Treatments were replicated 3 times with each web constituting a replication. In pretreatment counts of 3 colonies made 19 Aug, mean no. of live larvae was 133. Efficacy of test materials was determined at 3 days posttreatment by pruning the webs from the trees, placing them in plastic bags and holding them under refrigeration. Webs were examined by dismantling and counting number of live caterpillars.

Abstract Five insecticides were evaluated for efficacy against the Japanese beetle in an experimental vineyard of ‘Concord’ grapes at Wooster, Ohio. Plots consisted of 2 vines, with 4 replicates/treatment in a randomized complete block design. Treatments were applied as foliar sprays at a rate of 100 gal/acre (935 liter/ha) on 12 Jul using a hand-held CO2 sprayer operating at 45 psi (3.2 kg/cm2) and equipped with a 9505-E-TeeJet nozzle. After treated foliage was dry, 10 grape leaves were removed at random from the outside canopy of each plot for use in the bioassay. Leaves were brought into the laboratory at 0, 2, and 6 DAT and placed inside ventilated 1-gal ice cream containers with 10 Japanese beetles. The containers were modified by placing plastic liners inside and cheesecloth over the top. A mortality count was made after holding beetles on treated foliage for 24 h. The insect holding room was maintained at 75°F (23°C) with 75% RH. In addition to the bioassay a reading of the number of live Japanese beetles present in the field plots was taken at 1, 2, and 6 DAT. This was done by counting the number of live beetles present on the grape foliage of each plot.

ABSTRACT The effect of radiofrequency (RF) heating technology at 27 MHz and 8 kW on the quality properties of vacuum-packed nitrite-free sausages was investigated. One of the several advantages of RF heating technology is the use of less time compared to retort heating. RF heating at 125 °C for a holding time of 2 min and retort heating at 121 °C for 7 min reduced Bacillus subtilis to 7 log cfu/g. In addition, the textural properties of the RF-heated sausages were better than those of retort-heated samples. Furthermore, the growth of B. subtilis and general live bacteria at 25 °C were not detected after 42 days of shelf life in the sausages that underwent RF heating at 125 °C with a holding time of 2 min.

The strong demand for live spiny lobsters in Asian markets is being met by long-distance airfreight. Holding lobsters out of water during transportation often results in mortalities due to the accumulation of metabolites, especially ammonia. This study examined the potential to improve the survival of tropical lobster species exported from India through the use of the food-safe aquatic anaesthetic isobutanol, both with and without cold stunning, typically used prior to live lobster transportation. The results of the study indicate that treatment with 50 ppm isobutanol in ambient seawater temperature (i.e., 28 °C) prior to simulated live transport for 22 h significantly reduces ammonia levels in the haemolymph in all four lobster species (Panulirus homarus, P. ornatus, P. versicolor and P. polyphagus) compared to lobsters treated with cold stunning (i.e., 16.5 °C) with and without 10 ppm isobutanol. Cold stunning at 16.5 °C combined with 10 ppm isobutanol reduced ammonia levels compared to cold stunning alone only in P. ornatus. All experimental lobsters were returned to ambient seawater after simulated transport and were alive after 48 h. These results indicate that isobutanol has the potential to be used to suppress metabolism during the live transport of tropical lobsters and to reduce mortalities during live transport.

Aktivitas penangkapan, transportasi, dan penampungan menimbulkan kematian yang cukup banyak sehingga mengurangi stok dan nilai penerimaan penjualan belut. Penanganan belut pasca-penangkapan dalam air salin dapat menekan tingkat kematian belut, namun dampaknya terhadap keuntungan bisnis belum diketahui. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi penampungan dalam air salin terhadap sintasan dan keuntungan usaha penjualan belut hidup. Penelitian dilakukan pada pedagang besar belut hidup di Jawa Tengah yang memperoleh pasokan belut dari berbagai lokasi di Jawa. Belut uji yang diperoleh dari tiga lokasi yaitu Ciamis, Jawa Barat; Cilacap, Jawa Tengah; dan Lumajang, Jawa Timur; masing-masing ditampung terpisah dan dipelihara selama enam hari dalam air tawar (salinitas 0 g/L) dan air tawar yang ditambah garam krosok pada konsentrasi 6 g/L. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa penampungan selama seminggu dalam salinitas 6 g/L menghasilkan tingkat sintasan belut 1,6 kali dibandingkan dengan penampungan dalam air tawar pada semua lokasi asal belut. Sintasan yang lebih tinggi tersebut meningkatkan nilai penerimaan dan keuntungan usaha.Asian swamp eel (Monopterus albus) is a highly-priced freshwater fish collected from natural waters and sold alive in the market with an ever-increasing demand. Fishing methods, transportation, and holding of live eels before being sold frequently result in significant mortality, which eventually reduces the sales revenue from the business. However, post-capture handling of the eel using saline water could reduce the mortality rate, but the impact on business profits has never been determined. This study was aimed to determine the effects of water salinity on the survival of the eels during the holding period and calculate the profit gain from live eel sales. The research was carried out in the facility of a wholesaler of live Asian swamp eel in Central Java which received eel supply from various locations in Java. The samples of eels were originated from three locations, namely Ciamis, West Java; Cilacap, Central Java; and Lumajang, East Java. The eels were placed in separate containers filled with: fresh water (salinity 0 g/L) and freshwater added with salt at concentration 6 g/L for six days. The results showed that six days holding period in salinity of 6 g/L resulted in a higher survival rate of the eels up to 1.6 times compared to the freshwater. This higher survival has increased the revenues and profitability of the live eels sales.

Treatments were applied as foliar sprays at rate of 100 gal/acre (379 1/ha) on 21 Jul using a hand-held CO2 sprayer at 45 psi (3.2 kg/cm2) with a 9505-E-TeeJet nozzle. After treated foliage was dry, 5 grape leaves were removed at random from the outside canopy of each treated plant. Leaves were brought into the laboratory and placed in a ventilated 1-gal ice cream container with 10 Japanese beetles. The containers were modified by placing plastic liners inside and cheese cloth over the top. A mortality count was made after holding beetles on treated foliage for 24 h. The insect holding room was maintained at 75°F (23°C) with ca. 75% RH. In addition to the bioassay, a reading of the number of live Japanese beetles present in the field plots was taken 24 h after initial application of the insecticides. The number of live beetles present on the grape foliage of each plot were counted. All treatments in the bioassay were statistically better than the check in both the lab and the field. None of the treatments was phytotoxic to the grape foliage.

Oxygen consumption (Mo 2) of P. cygnus was measured in intermittent flow respirometers. A log–log relationship with body weight (W ) remained constant over the range 15–31 °C. Mo 2 was related to body weight and temperature (T) : log 10 Mo 2 =0.814log 10W +0.051 T – 2.075.I n 400 –500 g lobsters it showed a strong response to acute temperature changes (23 –19 –15 –11 and 23 –27 –31 °C): log 10 Mo 2 = 0.045 T – 2.38. Activity caused a significant (P <0.001) increase in Mo 2, with the response being modulated by temperature and body weight. Lobsters took 5–8 h to recover from exposure to handling and emersion, the duration of the recovery period being longer at higher temperatures. A nocturnal rhythm to oxygen consumption was evident. There was a large and sustained specific dynamic action, with a peak Mo 2 of 2.19 times the standard rate occurring 7 h after feeding. Mo 2 at 23 °C was independent of the oxygen tension down to a critical oxygen tension (P c) of 46.2 Torr, be low which Mo 2 varied directly with the oxygen tension. P c varied with temperature and activity state. The data allow the design of live-holding systems and practices that provide the oxygen requirements of captive P. cygnus . One hundred and twenty market weight (90 kg) pigs were allocated at random to one of three treatments: immediate slaughter and 24 h or 48 h without feed or water after arrival at an abattoir. All pigs were removed from feed 17 h before arrival at the abattoir. Weights of body organs and the digestive tract full and emptied of digesta were recorded along with warm carcass weight. After chilling for 24 h a pork chop 25 mm thick was removed along with the commercial ham and belly from the left carcass side and frozen for later quality determinations. Live weight shrink over 48 h amounted to 6.8 kg with 75% (5.1 kg) of this loss being attributed to loss in carcass weight. The 24-h holding period also resulted in a significant loss in carcass weight (3 kg). Approximately 20% of the total shrink over 48 h was due to a reduction in digestive tract contents. Body organs showed little change in weight over the 48-h holding period apart from the liver which was reduced in weight by 14.6%. Final longissimus muscle pH was increased and muscle luminosity (fresh longissimus, cured m. semimembranosus and m. biceps femoris) decreased for both the 24-h and 48-h holding treatments but did not result in any dark, firm and dry meat. Drip loss in pork chops decreased with increased ante-mortem holding time. However, processed yields for hams and bacon were not significantly influenced by the holding period pre-slaughter. It was concluded that the time from last feeding to slaughter should be minimized to avoid losses in carcass weight and slightly darker fresh and processed meat. Ninety rabbits (California White breed) with an average weight of 2.3kg were allocated at random to one of nine treatments to assess the effects of withholding feed alone or feed together with water on darcass shrinkage and meat quality. The nine treatments were: The control (given ad libitun feed and water), and 12, 24, 36 and 48 hours periods without feed alone prior to slaughter and 12, 24, 36 and 48 hours without feed and water. Live and carcass weights were taken to monitor shrinkage. Other relevant meat quality parameters such as protein content, pll, index of water holding capacity, colour and wetness scores, cooking losses and the percentage gross composition of the carcass were determined. Live and carcass Weights, weights of head, liver, kidneys and heart decreased progressively as the length of fasting period increased. The progressive decreases in weights were found to be more pronounced in animals from which feed together with water were withdrawn. Within 24 hours of fasting, decreases in weights were found to be significant (P<0.05). Ultimate pH and index of water holding capacity of the meats also increased with the increase in lenght of fasting period, with a concomitant decrease in cooking losses. The fat ratio of the carcass component decreased with increase in length of fasting. A preslaughter period of only a few hours between 0 and 12 hours is therefore recommended for rabbit meat processing.

Biomechanical, behavioural, and morphological adaptations affecting lift and drag on tropical stream fish (five loricariids and one gyrinocheilid) are analyzed. The drag on fish attached to a surface is directly measured for the first time, allowing the lift coefficient to be inferred. Mean drag coefficients (0.2–0.9, based on projected frontal area) are 2 to 30 times the equivalent frictional coefficients for laminar flow for smooth blisters attached to a surface. Fineness ratios (total length / maximal height, l/h = 6.7–9.0), flattening (maximal body width / maximal height, b/h = 0.9–2.0), and lengthening (distance from end of rostrum to maximal height / total length, x/l = 0.17–0.22) are similar to optimal values for technical bodies of low drag (smooth blisters attached to surfaces: 10, 2, and 0.3 for l/h, b/h, and x/l, respectively). The station-holding ability of Gyrinocheilus aymonieri (Tirant, 1883) (closed oral sucker) is compared with that of the loricariids (open oral suckers) using live and dead slipping velocities (Vlive and Vdead; water velocity at which live and dead fish first move backwards against the current, respectively) measured on a smooth Perspex® surface. Gyrinocheilus aymonieri has the greatest station-holding ability (Vlive = 59.1 cm·s–1, Vlive – Vdead = 45.7 cm·s–1). Fish with high Vdead and low Vlive – Vdead values rely more on frictional devices (e.g., spines and odontodes) for station-holding than on oral suction (e.g., fish of the genera Otocinclus Cope, 1871 and Hypostomus Lacépède, 1803), whereas those with low Vdead and high Vlive – Vdead values place a greater emphasis on suction (e.g., G. aymonieri and the genus Pterygoplichthys Gill, 1858). Stream fishes maximize slipping speed through high densities (1.06–1.15 g·cm–3), high frictional coefficients (0.12–1.2 on a Perspex® surface), and high rheotactic suction pressures (26–173 Pa). In addition, a negative lift coefficient of –0.5 is calculated for the genus Chaetostoma von Tschudi, 1846.

This study assessed the potential use of various physiological stress biomarkers as indicators of carcass and meat quality traits in 240 pigs subjected to the standard marketing conditions and minimal stressful antemortem handling using Pearson correlations. The most important pork quality traits (pH and temperature, water holding capacity, and color) had limited correlations with stress metabolites (lactate, glucose), stress hormones (cortisol, adrenocorticotropic hormone), stress enzymes (creatine kinase, aspartate amino transferase, alanine amino transferase), electrolytes (sodium, chloride), and acute-phase proteins (haptoglobin, C-reactive protein, albumin), indicating poor reliability in predicting pork quality. Albumin level was moderately positively correlated with live weight, hot carcass weight, cold carcass weight, and back fat thickness. Alanine amino transferase level was moderately positively correlated with live weight, hot carcass weight, and cold carcass weight. Cortisol level was moderately positively correlated with live weight, hot carcass weight, cold carcass weight, and back fat thickness, and moderately negatively correlated with the lean carcass content. Increased lactate dehydrogenase level was moderately correlated with decreased drip and cooking loss. In conclusion, lactate dehydrogenase could help pork producers predict pork quality variation, while cortisol, alanine amino transferase, and albumin could be useful in prediction of carcass quality.

Two experiments were used to assess the effects of barotrauma on initial capture survival and short-term postrecompression survival of line-caught (range 18–225 m) southern California rockfish ( Sebastes spp.). Occurrence of external and internal signs of barotrauma was characterized across all species. Despite species-specific differences in the extent of barotrauma observed, initial capture survival of rockfish held in a live well for a 10-min period following capture was 68% overall (19 species, n = 168). Overall 2-day survival of rockfish following recompression in cages was also 68% (17 species, n = 257). Short-term survival varied across species (range 36% to 82%), as did the occurrence of external signs of barotrauma. The degree of external signs of barotrauma was not a significant predictor of initial capture survival or short-term survival. The most significant predictor of short-term survival was surface holding time, with short-term survival increasing with decreasing surface holding time. These results suggest that rapid recompression of rockfish can significantly decrease discard mortality and could potentially enhance rockfish conservation.

The Brahmaputra and other rivers of Assam are replete with numerous sandbars, which are locally called chars. Chars are home to nearly 10 per cent population of Assam. Char dwellers live a precarious life. Battered by recurrent floods and soil erosion, chars have an impermanent existence. In western Assam, the char dwellers, mostly belonging to the migrant Muslim community of East Bengal origin, live in backwardness and poverty. The article examines two questions pertaining to their economic life: income and seasonal migration. Through a primary data survey and statistical analysis, the article seeks to delineate the salient factors which influence their income and migration decision. We conclude that land holding, land lost due to erosion, household size and education are some of the factors which play a key role in this regard. We find that location of a char is important: some chars are more migration-prone than others. Policy implications have been spelled out in the end.

MSME actors who enter the world of e-commerce also interact with potential buyers by holding live streaming with the aim of utilizing technological developments to reach consumers more broadly. Thus, being able to bring changes to consumer habits, they prefer to shop from home because it is easy, practical, and there are many attractive promos. Therefore, this study was made with the aim of examining the relationship between flash sale countdown timer, live streaming e-commerce on the formation of impulsive buying which is strengthened or weakened by the presence of in-home shopping tendency. Hypothesis testing is done by analyzing Partial Least Square – Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS software. The results showed that flash sale countdown timer and live streaming e-commerce had a positive effect on impulsive buying, also in home shopping tendency as a moderating variable has a positive effect.

HighlightsComputational fluid dynamics modeling was an effective tool to simulate conditions on transport trailers in holding broilers for slaughter, to understand the performance of existing and alternative system configurations;Model simulation and measurements indicated that less than 32% of airflow generated by the cooling fans in the existing fan configuration in this study actually penetrated through the bird-occupied spaces;Simulations suggest that higher air velocity in the bird occupied zone within the modules can be achieved by alternative fan configurations at the holding shed, such as employing one fan per module, or with the addition of a transition enclosures from each fan outlet to the face of the receiving module. Abstract. The configuration of cooling systems in commercial holding sheds, where live broilers wait in cage modules for slaughter, varies between processing plants, with cooling system efficacies largely unknown. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to simulate airflow through cage modules in a poultry trailer in a typical holding shed configuration. Three alternative design configurations were simulated in order to better understand the air velocity profiles and to explore potential improvements for better cooling performance. Experimental data were collected within modules in a poultry trailer, parked in an existing commercial holding shed during warm summer conditions. Results from the CFD model had reasonable agreement with measured field data. Simulated air velocities were mostly within one standard deviation of measured values. Simulation of airflow through modules in the base configuration showed that less than 32% of airflow from the fans actually penetrated through the bird-occupied space. Module tiers experienced different airflow penetration due to the ad hoc positioning/alignment of the fans relative to the modules. In the base industry configuration, fans were in fixed positions and the number of fans and their centerline discharge axes did not align with the modules on the trailer. Regions not aligned with the faces of the fans, such as the uppermost and bottommost tiers, and horizontal locations offset from the fans, received the least airflow through the modules. Sections of modules experienced lower air velocity with increasing distance from the fans. Simulation of Design Alternative 2 (which added additional fans so that a fan was centered on each row) predicted an improved fan airflow of 3.08 and 3.05 kg s-1 through the cages in two adjacent rows, compared to 1.52 and 2.15 kg s-1 predicted for the original configuration. The increased air velocity using the alternative design illustrates the potential improvement and need to further optimize the design of these holding sheds. This research showed that a CFD model is an effective tool to simulate airflow conditions on poultry trailers in holding sheds to explore various holding shed cooling configurations and strategies. Abstract The 10 ft tall container grown trees were held in a nursery holding area on the Michigan State University Campus in East Lansing, Michigan for the duration of this test. To alleviate drift problems, branches were dipped in the appropriate pesticide solutions on 30 May. Treatments were replicated 6 times with a replication consisting of an individual branch. Several trees had up to 4 branches with different treatments. Sleeve cages were put on the branches and ten 2nd instar larvae were placed within each cage on 4 Jun. Larvae were counted on 7 Jun and 11 Jun by rolling back the cages and counting live larvae.

In the present paper, the author has carried out a comparative analysis of Boris Pasternak’s rendering of Hamlet, which first appeared in 1940 and was republished time and again between 1941 and 1957, sometimes with major cuts and revisions. Recounting the disturbing history of the most famous Shakespearean translation in the Russian language and re-evaluating previous research on it, the author arrives at a conclusion that Pasternak’s Hamlet, by and large, aims at holding a mirror up to the times of the Stalinist Russia. The translation’s extensive political engagement is documented by juxtaposing Shakespeare’s original with Pasternak’s striking allusions to the times of terror in which he had to live.

In this article have been presented results of the analysis of the influence of the method of feeding pigs during growing-finishing on the quality of meat when fattening to live weight 100, 110 and 120 kg, in terms of the combined use of feed of different humidity during rearing and fattening. The pig meat of commercial hybrid (Y×L)× “MaxGrow” was characterized by a low level of water-holding capacity, regardless of the live weight of animals at slaughter and feeding methods, which is negatively associated with the loss of free moisture during further storage and processing of meat raw materials. According to the color of the meat no significant difference was found between the groups, but the meat of pigs, live weight 110 and 120 kg little compared to the darker coloration on a scale of “Pork Quality Standards”. Animals that consumed wetter feed during the full cycle of growing-finishing and fattening were superior to their counterparts in the content of intramuscular fat (P ≤ 0.01). With the increase in live weight of animals, the fat content in the meat of pigs which used a liquid type of feeding during rearing increased. The difference in fat content was especially pronounced between animals that consumed on growing-finishing dry and liquid feed when slaughtering them with a live weight 120 kg. The effect of the combination of feeding method for these groups was η² = 39.3% (P ≤ 0.01). Two-factor analysis showed the effect of both factors – the feeding method η² = 15.2% (P ≤ 0.001) and live weight η² = 20.1% (P ≤ 0.01), on the level of intramuscular fat in pigs. Factors of feeding (η² = 26.2%) and live weight (η² = 18.7%) had a reliable effect (P ≤ 0.001) on the energy value of pork meat in the studied genotype. Feeding young animals moistened with multiphase method, followed by fattening with liquid feed contributed to the formation of a certain mode of consumption and mechanism of assimilation of nutrients in piglets, which led to a more intensive accumulation of intramuscular fat.

Abstract Male prairie voles become more responsive to infants following cohabitation with a female. Exposure to female sensory cues prior to offspring birth may influence male paternal tendencies by modifying his response to infant odors in particular or to odors in general. To test these hypotheses, males were housed with an unfamiliar female or a same-sex sibling for 13 days then examined for their response towards either live infants or infant-like inanimate objects covered with one of three odors: water, infant, sub-adult. We recorded the number of males that retrieved and manipulated the infants or odor-covered objects and measured the frequency and duration of time males spent attending to them or engaged in other non-social activities. Female-Cohabited males approached the container holding infant-odor covered objects faster than Male-Cohabited males, but showed no differences in time spent manipulating those objects. Males in both groups spent more time manipulating live infants than odor-covered objects. However, Female-Cohabited subjects were more likely to manipulate odor-covered objects as well as live infants than Male-Cohabited subjects. Additionally, the frequency of self-grooming in Female-Cohabited males was higher for water-covered objects compared to Male-Cohabited males. In presence of water and live infants, Female-Cohabited males groomed themselves with greater frequency than in presence of infant odor or sub-adult odor. The data suggest that female cues increase the male’s sensitivity to infant odors and enhance the salience of non-social odors.
