Joseph Lister – the largest English surgeon and scientist, the founder of antiseptics, President of the Royal society of surgeons, a member of the house of lords. Joseph Lister was born on 5 apr 1827 in England. In 1844 he graduated from high school, and in 1852, the medical faculty of the University of London and was appointed resident assistant College University hospital. The first scientific work of Lister was published in 1852 and was dedicated to the structure of the iris of the eye and its muscles. Soon Lister began working in the clinic of Professor George. Syme in Edinburgh and published lectures, devoted primarily to ophthalmology. In 1855 he became a member of the Royal College of surgeons and is a Professor in the George. Saimaa. In 1858 Lister became a surgeon of the Royal hospital in Edinburgh and at the same time began to read a course of surgery at the University. On 9 March 1860 he was appointed Professor of surgery in Glasgow. In 1867 in the journal "Lancet" published articles Lister, in which he argued the idea that wound infection is called a living beginning, introduced from the outside; was presented to combat surgical infection, comprising treating hand surgeon, surgical field and instruments, disinfection of the air by atomization of a solution of carbolic acid. In 1869 Lister was transferred to the surgical clinic in Edinburgh, and in 1877 he was given the chair of clinical surgery at king's College London. In 1884 Joseph Lister was given the title of baronet, from 1895 to 1900 he was President of the Royal society of surgeons; in 1897 appointed a member of the house of lords. In 1892 he was 65 years old and, according to the law, he had to leave the Department at the Royal College. Joseph Lister was made an honorary member of numerous universities and scientific societies, was awarded the Royal medal (1880), medal of Comenius (1877), albert (1894), Copley (1902); the order of merit (1902). Died Joseph Lister, on 10 February 1912 in Walmer. In honor of Joseph Lister has been named a genus of bacteria Listeria (Listeria), he is on the English postage stamp, issued in 1966.

Abstract At present one of the leading places in the world is the development and mastering the production can simultaneously strip tillage and formation of irrigation throws and their use in the sowing of cucurbitaceous crops. The aim parameters the lister body combined strip-till of cucurbitaceous. Methods of classical mechanics have been applied in the research. In the process of research, the degree of layer turnover and soil crumbling by the lister body were determined, a special laboratory unit and strain gauge methods were used. Constructive the preparation fields from under cereals for strip sowing of gourds is the scheme with the lister body, ripper, right- and left-turning extreme bodies and furrow former located along the axis of symmetry. According to the results of theoretical studies, analytical dependences and mathematical models, allowing to determine the width of the lister body, the height of its blade, the size of the layer processed by the body, were obtained. Theoretical and experimental researches show that to provide the width of lister body should be 46 cm and its height 45.

There is currently no brain atlas available to specifically determine stereotaxic coordinates for neurosurgery in Lister hooded rats despite the popularity of this strain for behavioural neuroscience studies in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. We have created a dataset, which we refer to as ‘Ratlas-LH’ (for Lister hooded). Ratlas-LH combines in vivo magnetic resonance images of the brain of young adult male Lister hooded rats with ex vivo micro-computed tomography images of the ex vivo skull, as well as a set of delineations of brain regions, adapted from the Waxholm Space Atlas of the Sprague Dawley Rat Brain. Ratlas-LH was produced with an isotropic resolution of 0.15 mm. It has been labelled in such a way as to provide a stereotaxic coordinate system for the determination of distances relative to the skull landmark of bregma. We have demonstrated that the atlas can be used to determine stereotaxic coordinates to accurately target brain regions in the Lister hooded rat brain. Ratlas-LH is freely available to facilitate neurosurgical procedures in the Lister hooded rat.

ABSTRACTThe vaccinia virus complement control protein (VCP) is a secreted viral protein that binds the C3b and C4b complement components and inhibits the classic and alternative complement pathways. Previously, we reported that an attenuated smallpox vaccine, LC16m8, which was derived from the Lister strain of vaccinia virus (VV-Lister), expressed a glycosylated form of VCP, whereas published sequence data at that time indicated that the VV-Lister VCP has no motif for N-linked glycosylation. We were interested in determining whether the glycosylation of VCP impairs its biological activity, possibly contributing to the attenuation of LC16m8, and the likely origin of the glycosylated VCP. Expression analysis indicated that VV-Lister contains substrains expressing glycosylated VCP and substrains expressing nonglycosylated VCP. Other strains of smallpox vaccine, as well as laboratory strains of vaccinia virus, all expressed nonglycosylated VCP. Individual Lister virus clones expressing either the glycosylated VCP or the nonglycosylated species were isolated, and partially purified VCP from the isolates were found to be functional equivalents in binding human C3b and C4b complement proteins and inhibiting hemolysis and in immunogenicity. Recombinant vaccinia viruses expressing FLAG-tagged glycosylated VCP (FLAG-VCPg) and nonglycosylated VCP (FLAG-VCP) were constructed based on the Western Reserve strain. Purified FLAG-VCP and FLAG-VCPg bind human C3b and C4b and blocked complement-mediated hemolysis. Our data suggest that glycosylation did not affect the biological activity of VCP and thus may not have contributed to the attenuation of LC16m8. In addition, the LC16m8 virus likely originated from a substrain of VV-Lister that expresses glycosylated VCP.

Several years ago, when Airbus Industrie launched their twin-engined A 300 Airbus, it became apparent that a new generation of long-range aircraft was about to add a different facet to the shape of international air travel. The enormous power available from the big fan engines coming into use meant that adequate performance was available even when an engine failure meant the loss of half the installed thrust. Coupled to this was a standard of fuel economy and tank capacity which meant that the new aircraft were capable of operating over ranges far in excess of those previously attained by twin-engined aircraft.

De um total de 237 espécimes (campo e câmara-úmida), foram identificadas dez espécies, pertencentes a cinco famílias e seis gêneros: Licea castanea G. Lister, L. denudescens H.W. Keller & T.E. Brooks, L. pedicellata (H.C. Gilbert) H.C. Gilbert (Liceaceae); Cribraria violacea Rex (Cribrariaceae); Perichaena chrysosperma (Curr.) Lister, P. depressa Libert, P. vermicularis (Schwein.) Rostaf. (Trichiaceae); Physarum auriscalpium Cooke, P. crateriforme Petch. (Physaraceae); Diderma aff. chondrioderma (de Bary & Rostaf.) G. Lister (Didymiaceae). Os resultados sugerem que a composição das mixobiotas das duas áreas estudadas é semelhante (CC=0,88). São apresentados comentários, descrições e distribuição de cada espécie para o Brasil.

This essay explores the meaning of the representation of Anne Lister, historical figure (1791–1840), for contemporary audiences, in the 2019–2022 series Gentleman Jack. Produced by HBO and BBC, the series is a very high-quality TV show, but certainly not the first, even English period piece, centering on lesbian desire. Still, the fan response was quite intense and heartfelt. Part of the power it has had on audiences is the way Anne Lister is characterized as an actual early nineteenth-century woman claiming her desires and place in the world, without shame or apology, and the fact that most viewers had never heard of her before the series. The fact that such a force of nature, who left 5 million words documenting her life, could be erased as a queer presence in popular imagination, until now, has a profound effect on many contemporary queer viewers.

Aviation medicine came into existence as a recognized entity when certain standards were established during and shortly after World War I.1 During this time, accident rates were high.2 In fact, a larger number of pilots were dying in accidents than in combat. Figures from Great Britain's casualty list at the close of the first year of World War I indicated that for every 100 aviators killed, 60 died as a result of some individual physical defect, 30 from some form of recklessness or careless behavior, 8 as a result of some mechanical defect in the airplane, and only 2 at the hands of the enemy.3 Aviators were found to be in poor physical condition. Because there were no established regulations with regard to workloads, aviators were frequently found to have been flying to a point beyond exhaustion. Because of workload, chronic fatigue, and emotional stress, aviators were constantly called upon to perform superhuman feats when not in peak physical condition. Errors in judgement were common. The majority of pilots lost weight as a somatic sign of stress. This was recognized by Theodore Lister who had recently been appointed as the Chief Surgeon, Aviation Section of the U.S. Army. Such problems were not diagnosed by medical officers because they were not trained to recognize them. Theodore Charles Lister was the son of Captain William J. and Martha Doughty Lister. He was an Army “brat” who entered the world on July 10, 1875. His childhood was spent in various posts around the country. At the age of 7, Lister contracted yellow fever while living in Fort Brown, TX. The boy was treated by William Gorgas, a young post surgeon. Gorgas was credited with the young boy's recovery. Later, Gorgas was to marry Lister's aunt making Lister his nephew by marriage. Having survived the yellow fever infection, young Lister had a lifelong immunity to the disease.

Lister has gone down in history as the father of antiseptic surgery. Following Pasteur’s ideas, Lister looked for a chemical substance with which to annihilate germs. After several tests he arrived at carbolic acid (today called phenol), a compound extracted from creosote that at that time was used to prevent the rotting of railway sleepers. In 1865 and after some dubious beginnings, he for the first time managed to heal the open fracture in the leg of a child hit by a car without infection. More than a century and a half later, the methods and substances have changed. From today’s perspective, such generous use of the corrosive and toxic phenol, which today is handled with special care in laboratories, may be surprising. But today we are left with Lister’s revolutionary idea that drew the line between ancient and modern surgery.

The antibody responses elicited by immunization of humans with vaccinia virus (VACV) strains Lister, Dryvax and NYVAC have been determined and compared. Neutralizing antibodies against intracellular mature virus (IMV) and extracellular enveloped virus (EEV), and binding antibody titres (ELISA) against the EEV protein B5, the IMV proteins A27 and H3, and VACV-infected cell lysate were measured. Lister and Dryvax induced broadly similar antibody titres, consistent with the fact that these vaccines each protected against smallpox. In contrast, antibody titres induced by NYVAC were significantly lower than those induced by both Lister and Dryvax. Moreover, there were qualitative differences with NYVAC-immunized subjects failing to induce A27-specific antibodies. These observations suggest that although NYVAC is a safer VACV strain, it does not induce an optimal VACV-specific antibody response. However, NYVAC strains engineered to express antigens from other pathogens remain promising candidate vaccines for immunization against other diseases.

In response to potential bioterrorism with smallpox, members of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces were vaccinated with vaccinia virus (VACV) strain LC16m8, an attenuated smallpox vaccine derived from VACV strain Lister. The serological response induced by LC16m8 to four virion-surface proteins and the intracellular mature virus (IMV) and extracellular enveloped virus (EEV) was investigated. LC16m8 induced antibody response against the IMV protein A27 and the EEV protein A56. LC16m8 also induced IMV-neutralizing antibodies, but unlike the VACV strain Lister, did not induce either EEV-neutralizing antibody or antibody to EEV protein B5, except after revaccination. Given that B5 is the only target for EEV-neutralizing antibody and that neutralization of both IMV and EEV give optimal protection against orthopoxvirus challenge, these data suggest that immunity induced by LC16m8 might be less potent than that deriving from strain Lister. This potential disadvantage should be balanced against the advantage of the greater safety of LC16m8.

It is commonly accepted that Louis Pasteur is the father of microbiology and Joseph Lister is the father of antisepsis. Middleton Goldsmith, a surgeon in the Union Army during the American Civil War, meticulously studied hospital gangrene and developed a revolutionary treatment regimen. The cumulative Civil War hospital gangrene mortality was 45 per cent. Goldsmith's method, which he applied to over 330 cases, yielded a mortality under 3 per cent. His innovative work predated Pasteur and Lister, making his success truly remarkable and worthy of historical and surgical note.

During the past 5 years the coastal zone offshore the northern part of the island of Sylt, has been investigated by sparker seismics and high-resolution subbottom profiling. The North Sea sector of the area is characterized by northward-directed sediment bypass as a result of strong long-shore (tidal) currents heading towards the Lister Tief. The southern part of Lister Tief is characterized by the presence of a major dune field with up to 8 m high compound dunes with wavelengths up to 350 m indicative of easterly-directed sediment transport (flood dominated). Further to the northwest, in the outer delta, a dune field suggesting westerly-directed sediment transport is identified. The two dune fields appear to be separated by minor indefinite bed forms. The northern part of the Lister Tief is characterised by the presence of a channel with a depth of 20-30 mbsf (meter below sea level) (30-40 msec TWT (Two Way Traveltime)) and displaying erosion towards the north. At the western termination of the channel the sediment transport pathway appears to be divided into two directions; one towards the outer delta, and one towards the sediment depocenter SW of Rømø. The Lister Ley is characterized by the presence of minor dunes, indicative of flood-current control, apart from a central zone where ebb-tide is responsible for northward-directed sediment transport. Sparker seismic and Chirp III data are consistent with processes having been persistent throughout the Holocene. Based on the study a model for the current direction and sedimentation regime is suggested.

Dahulu, perawatan luka bertujuan untuk mengontrol perdarahan dan menutupinya dengan bahan-bahan yang mudah diperoleh seperti lumpur, dedaunan, lumut, dll. Dan dalam proses penyembuhan turut melibatkan ahli agama dan astronom. Pemberian zat-zat topical dan besi panas sehingga luka menjadi infeksi terus berlangsung hingga adanya penemuan Lister dan Pasteur. Penemuan Lister dan Pasteur menyebabkan penggunaan antiseptic meningkat secara pesat selama Perang Dunia (PD) I untuk meminimalkan kejadian infeksi. Perkembangan balutan modern dimulai pada pertengahan abad 20 mengubah konsep yang sebelumnya dianut, dan sejak itu terjadi banyak penemuan baru yang menghasilkan balutan oklusif. Hingga saat ini penelitian-penelitian terus dilakukan untuk mencari alternative balutan baru. Wound management expands from time to time and changes rapidly. In the old time, people used variety of different treatments in managing wounds based on experience and belief. Historically, wound management aimed to control bleeding and to cover the wound with dressing made by available materials such as mud, leaves, lichen, etc. the treatments involved priests and astronomer. Covering wound with topical agent and hot iron had made the wound to be infectied. The situation continued until the discoveries of Pasteur and Lister. The discoveries of Lister and Pasteur resulted an increase used of antiseptic in order to minimize wound infection.The development of modern wound dressing which started in the mind 20th century has changed the conventional dressing. Since then many new discoveries has resulted in occlusive dressing. Nowdays, the research has focused on the development of new dressing technology.

Objetivo: Evaluar, en forma retrospectiva, las diferentes variantes de los tubérculos de Lister y el extensor largo del pulgar en imágenes de resonancia magnética de muñecas y, sobre la base de dichos hallazgos, proponer variables a la clasificación. Materiales y Métodos: Estudio retrospectivo utilizando imágenes de resonancia magnética entre el 1 de marzo y el 10 de noviembre de 2019. Se incluyeron imágenes de muñeca de pacientes sanos (cortes axiales, sagitales y coronales de 1 mm de espesor), >18 años, sin fractura de muñeca o del carpo, previa o actual, y se excluyó a quienes no cumplían estos criterios. Se analizaron el tubérculo de Lister, la altura de los picos radial y cubital, el ángulo, la longitud del tubérculo, la profundidad de los valles y la altura del tabique. Se evaluó el extensor largo del pulgar analizando la altura, el espesor, la superficie y la presencia o no inflamaciónasociada. Resultados: Se analizaron 500 imágenes de muñeca, y se obtuvieron 11 subtipos de tubérculo de Lister: 411 tipo 1, 58 tipo 2 y 26 tipo 3. Dentro de estos, el más frecuente fue el tipo 1B. El 26,6% tenía inflamación asintomática en el tercero y cuarto compartimento. Conclusiones: El tubérculo de Lister es importante en muchos procedimientos y sirve como punto de referencia anatómico; por lo tanto, es preciso conocer su patrón más frecuente y sus variantes anatómicas. Proponemos una ampliación de la clasificación, adicionando nuevos tipos de tubérculo por conocer y su relación con el extensor largo del pulgar.

The fame of its medical university and its reputation for field botany attracted visitors from all over Europe to seventeenth-century Montpellier. It was there that Martin Lister first made the acquaintance of John Ray in 1665. Twenty years later, in London, they cooperated in the production of the ambitious and lavishly illustrated Historia Piscium based on the notes of the late Francis Willughby. Ray, Lister and others contributed additional material. In their own work on fishes, cetaceans and shellfish Ray and Lister were considerably indebted to the Libri de piscibus marinis of an earlier Montpellier professor, Guillaume Rondelet, whose Aristotelian/Galenic approach to the study of medicine and living things was distinguished by a quite exceptional level of knowledge about aquatic species, based on a secure grasp of the classical and contemporary literature, but above all on his own observations in rivers, lakes, lagoons and the open sea, and his domestication (and dissection) of marine species in ponds and aquaria at his country house. Rondelet's book proved useful to Ray and to Lister as a work of reference, as a stimulus for reflection on biological problems, as an aid to nomenclature, as a source of precise descriptions of species, in both words and pictures, as a model to be improved upon in taxonomy, as a warning against reliance on hearsay, and as a valuable account of observations and experiments. Ray used it in much the same way as he used the work of those sixteenth-century botanists who met with his approval. Several of these had been Rondelet's pupils.

This paper describes a revision and typification of the slime mould or myxomycete taxa proposed by the Lister family, according to current nomenclatural and taxonomic criteria. It is based on the collections in the BM fungarium housed at the Natural History Museum, London, formerly called the British Museum (Natural History). Arthur Lister, and his daughter Gulielma Lister, conducted intense research between 1887–1945 on the taxonomy and description of new species of myxomycetes. Arthur Lister published one of the first monographs of the myxomycetes in the world “A monograph of the Mycetozoa” in 1894, from collections in BM. His daughter Gulielma Lister edited and revised a second (1911) and third (1925) edition of this keystone publication. The Listers maintained a strong relationship with the Museum, and so the BM holds most of the type specimens of the taxa described by them in the three editions of the monograph, and the huge number of the scientific papers they published on myxomycetes. In almost six decades of work, the Listers described 115 new taxa, and proposed more than 100 new name combinations, but some of them are of doubtful interpretation currently, and a clarification was needed of the nomenclatural position of the described species. A search was made of type material and documents housed in the Natural History Museum such as notebooks, collections of slides or personal annotated copies of the monographs. A large quantity of information was checked with the historically important notes and illustrations of the 50 personal notebooks, and 20 other books detailing collections studied or revised by these authors. Almost all of Lister’s nomenclatural novelties lacked type indication, although in some cases a herbarium identifier was given, often referring to multiple collections, and in other cases several collections were mentioned under the description of the new taxa, so a lectotypification was done. From the 115 new taxa described by the Listers, 2 holotypes have been determined, 2 neotypes and 86 lectotypes have been designated in this publication. In 2 taxa syntypes were found but the material was too poor to lectotypify. Ten taxa remain unresolved when the pertinent material was not located. The rest were illigitimate names or doubtful taxa. All the typification information has been standardized, the geographical information updated, and BM barcodes included to facilitate future work. A brief biography of Arthur and Gulielma Lister, some historical notes, and a revision of the organization and level of conservation of their collection at BM, are included. There are also appendices with doubtful and excluded taxa, all the new combinations proposed by these authors, a list of notebooks and a complete list of publications by the Listers.

In 1674 the natural philosopher and physician Martin Lister published a new method of making glass of antimony for telescopic mirrors, using Derbyshire cawk or barite as a flux. New manuscript evidence reveals that Sir Isaac Newton requested samples of the cawk and antimony from Lister through an intermediary named Nathaniel Johnston. An analysis of Lister's paper and Johnston's correspondence and its context reveals insights not only about Newton's work with telescopic specula but also about his alchemical investigations. Analysing these sources also contributes to our understanding of the nature of correspondence networks in the early ‘scientific revolution’ in England.

ABSTRACT Potent and safe vaccinia virus vectors inducing cell-mediated immunity are needed for clinical use. Replicating vaccinia viruses generally induce strong cell-mediated immunity; however, they may have severe adverse effects. As a vector for clinical use, we assessed the defective vaccinia virus system, in which deletion of an essential gene blocks viral replication, resulting in an infectious virus that does not multiply in the host. The vaccinia virus Lister/Elstree strain, used during worldwide smallpox eradication, was chosen as the parental virus. The immunogenicity and safety of the defective vaccinia virus Lister were evaluated without and with the inserted human p53 gene as a model and compared to parallel constructs based on modified vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA), the present “gold standard” of recombinant vaccinia viruses in clinical development. The defective viruses induced an efficient Th1-type immune response. Antibody and cytotoxic-T-cell responses were comparable to those induced by MVA. Safety of the defective Lister constructs could be demonstrated in vitro in cell culture as well as in vivo in immunodeficient SCID mice. Similar to MVA, the defective viruses were tolerated at doses four orders of magnitude higher than those of the wild-type Lister strain. While current nonreplicating vectors are produced mainly in primary chicken cells, defective vaccinia virus is produced in a permanent safety-tested cell line. Vaccines based on this system have the additional advantage of enhanced product safety. Therefore, a vector system was made which promises to be a valuable tool not only for immunotherapy for diseases such as cancer, human immunodeficiency virus infection, or malaria but also as a basis for a safer smallpox vaccine.
