Yang, Dai Fei. "Improving Networked Learning in Higher Education: Language Functions and Design Patterns." University of Sydney, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/2465.
The thesis of this study is that two seemingly disparate research disciplines can be coalesced to develop an effective pedagogical framework for educational design in the context of networked learning. That contention is grounded in, and inspired by, the rapid developments in educational technologies which have greatly changed the landscape in teaching and learning in higher education over the last decade. The study attempts to add to the corpus of contemporary learning theory which sees students not merely as passive recipients of knowledge, but as active participants in the learning process, having much greater control over their selection of technological learning tools, learning resources and learning methodologies. This is very much in line with the shift from the traditional focus on content design and knowledge transmission towards a more student-centred design for knowledge co-construction, a development which demands the type of new thinking about the design of learning tasks and learning resources contained in this study. Also set out are new lines of action for the fashioning of a collaborative learning environment, for community interaction and the sharing of knowledge, and for promoting good teaching and learning practice. The central argument of the study is that such pedagogical goals may be attained by juxtaposing the theories of Systemic Functional Linguistics (hereafter SFL) and pattern languages. These have not, thus far, been used in combination. SFL is a well established theory in the study of language, and is used in this thesis to help analyse and classify discourses produced and shared by teachers and students in networked learning. Pattern languages have their origin in architecture. Design patterns can be used as a means of representing and sharing important and specific empirical research results and design experiences. This new knowledge can be used to support and improve the quality of educational design. The study has two central components. The first uses the SFL theoretical framework to demonstrate how text is used as a key medium in networked learning. In other words, it is argued in this section that the quality of texts has a direct impact on the quality of learning and learning outcomes. The quality of text is assessed by means of a detailed discourse analysis of selected texts. This process involves deconstructing, identifying and capturing the linguistic resources and language strategies used in the texts. The detailed discourse analysis also illustrates and reveals how language is used in the construction of knowledge and the promotion of collaboration in teaching and learning. The second component centres on the argument that SFL provides valuable language knowledge which can be represented by using Alexander’s design patterns. New knowledge encoded in these design patterns can be used by teachers and designers as reusable and shared resources to help them improve their design work. The empirical research was carried out in three phases. The first involved a) the identification of text patterns of discourses used in networked learning based on detailed discourse analysis; b) Interviewing experienced academic staff to identify their perspectives on good online teaching practices and success factors. The second phase involved using the data which emerged from these interviews and discourse analysis to model illustrative patterns. (Here, illustrative means that due to the scope of the study, it is only possible to develop a limited number of patterns to illustrate the methods used for pattern development. It is not the intention to develop a full repository of design patterns in this study). In the third (validation) phase the patterns were reviewed by two groups of academic staff, with the aim of improving these patterns. Improved patterns were then tested on a group of educational design students for their usefulness and application. It is concluded from this research that it is possible to develop design patterns which ensure the best use of linguistic resources in both the teaching and learning process. Finally, it is argued that the combination of SFL and pattern languages provides a promising theoretical framework for the complex and demanding task of educational design. Future research could make use of such a framework to explore a fuller application of the pattern- based approach for the representation of new knowledge for educational design. Suggested additional research directions include finding new ways of capturing a new pedagogical approach to mobile learning and blended learning. Also, a promising direction could be the use of SFL Appraisal theory (Martin, 2000) for the investigation on how students construct interpersonal relationships (appraise peer work) in online joint projects. In the conclusion, it is contended that through its exploration of new ground in the use of SFL and pattern language theory in the construction of education design patterns, the study makes a significant contribution to knowledge in the field of networked learning.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis is interested in textual features of websites which cover the same kind of content, but represent different organisations and address different kinds of audiences. Specifically, it investigates how information on HIV/AIDS is multimodally represented on the webpages of two non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and two governmental organisations. First, the websites of the national Department of Health and of a provincial Department of Health (Western Province) are scrutinised. Second, the websites of the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) and Avert, NGOs with a special interest in the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS in southern Africa, are investigated. The aim of the research is to consider aspects of layout, the use of multimodality, and the introduction of selected themes and concerns foregrounded in the selected websites. The focus of the thesis is on the transmission of information, particularly through the electronic media, by investigating multimodal elements (language, images, sound, colours) and the layouts of websites, in order to identify possible interpretations which the intended audiences may afford the various texts. The analysis of the sites relies theoretically on the metafunctions developed by Halliday (1985) in his systemic functional linguistic framework. It also refers to an extension of Halliday’s work developed to allow multimodal discourse analysis that considers aspects of visual design and placement, developed by Kress and van Leeuwen (1996, 1998) and Kress (2003, 2005). These approaches focus on text, multimodal elements, the placements thereof on a page as well as the coherence between design of layouts and communicative modes that intend to send a convincing and meaningful message. The thesis also refers to Critical Discourse Analysis in that it considers matters of language and power in internet based communication. It seems that the governmental sites are set up with an audience in mind who needs to be informed on policy matters, while the NGO sites are set up with a more vulnerable audience in mind. One kind of web-communication is likely to alienate the exact people who should be receiving state support and treatment in the face of HIV/AIDS. Another is aimed more at supporting activism against the perceived lethargy of the state. A third supports various charities that reach out to communities where HIV-infection rates are particularly high. The interpretation of multimodal pages requires knowledge of website design for educational purposes as well as information on usage of the internet to get sufficient information. Further, access of the intended audience to electronic communication needs to be considered as this will determine whether the seriousness of the illness and possible prevention or treatment, is well communicated, especially to those who have been identified as most vulnerable to new infection. The thesis finds that electronic communication cannot be the first step to circulating information related to HIV/AIDS. Non-governmental and governmental institutions are still dependent on other forms of media than websites, thus on the printed media, radio and television, and on campaigns or community based projects to communicate with particular audiences. Electronic communication is complex in that it works with various modes (visual, verbal, audial) and requires some technical sophistication from producers and receivers of texts. Theories of communication and discourse analytic methodologies can assist in our understanding of how the internet succeeds or fails in circulating critical health care information. However, to gain a reliable understanding of how the internet functions in transmitting HIV-information to all interest groups, received knowledge of other areas of scholarly interest in health care communication, such as multilingualism, sociology, anthropology, behavioural sciences, cognitive psychology or brain research elaborations, would eventually have to be considered as well.

In this information age, the Internet has found a role in various industries such as transportation, advertising, etc. The travel industry, in which communication between travellers and travel service providers is a very important component, has as much potential as any other industry to make full use of this new medium. Already, most travel agencies and travel service providers promote their products and services using web sites. Searching for information online is now seen by many people as a way to save time and cost, especially in their travel activities. In order to fully deploy the Internet within the travel industry, understanding the use of the Internet in tourism is critical. This research sets out initially to examine the role and the impact of the Internet in the whole of the travel industry. But in order to define an achievable scope of work and because of its importance in South Africa at this time, tourism within the travel industry was chosen as the focus of the work.

Growing integration of distributed energy resources (DER) presents the electric power sector with the potential for signicant changes to technical operations, business models, and industry structure. New physical components, control and information architecture, markets, and policies are required as the power system transitions from one of centralized generation and passive load to a network of increasingly decentralized generation and diverse system users. Price signals will play a crucial role in shaping the interactions between the physical components and users of the electric power system. Distribution network use-of-system (DNUoS) charges signal to network users how their utilization of the distribution system impacts system costs and each user's share of those costs. Distribution utilities cover network operation and maintenance costs and recover infrastructure in- vestments through DNUoS charges applied to network users. This thesis develops a framework for the design of DNUoS charges that addresses the challenge of distribution network cost allocation under growing penetration of DER. The proposed framework is comprised of 1) the use of a reference network model (RNM) to identify the key drivers of distribution system costs and their relative shares of total costs, and 2) the allocation of those costs according to network utilization profiles that capture each network user's contribution to and share of total system costs. The resulting DNUoS charges are highly differentiated for network users according to the impact that network use behaviors have on system costs. This is a substantial departure from existing methods of distribution network cost allocation and thus presents implementation challenges and implications that may be addressed in a range of ways to achieve varying regulatory objectives.

Electronic commerce, popularly referred to as e-commerce, is the latest catchphrase surrounding the Internet and its many functions. In the past, the Internet was solely used for information seeking, but the 21st century has brought a new global economy to the fore – one that is conducted online. Tourism is seen as a driver of economic growth, contributing both to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of South Africa (SA) and creating jobs in the hospitality sector. E-commerce does not only provide a platform for business to be conducted online but also an opportunity for consumers to interact directly with industry. Many studies have been done previously about the perceived benefits of e-commerce in the retail sector, yet none in Cape Town and at five-star hotels in particular. It is well known that holidaymakers conduct an online search prior to booking accommodation; some of those potential guests in turn choose to finalise their bookings online. The purpose of the study was to investigate the role of e-commerce in five-star hotels in the Cape Town Metropole. The main objective of this study was to define what e-commerce is for five-star hotels in the Cape Town Metropole and determine if the hotels are using e-commerce as a booking method. Online questionnaires were used to gather primary data and a literature review was presented as secondary data. The findings of this study showed that all the hotels surveyed use online bookings and half of the respondents believe Online Travel Agents (OTAs) generate more revenue than traditional methods of room reservation. When asked to rank methods of room’s reservations, there was a slight difference between telephone bookings and e-commerce as number one. This could mean that while electronic methods are popular, they have not completely replaced traditional methods. The researcher recommends that five-star hotel managers train the rooms’ division staff to respond to negative reviews on social media, as this was one of the findings. The hotels should also learn how to effectively use their social media presence to increase room sales.

Among all the tasks that exist in Information Extraction, Entity Linking, also referred to as entity disambiguation or entity resolution, is a new and important problem which has recently caught the attention of a lot of researchers in the Natural Language Processing (NLP) community. The task involves linking/matching a textual mention of a named-entity (like a person or a movie-name) to an appropriate entry in a database (e.g. Wikipedia or IMDB). If the database does not contain the entity it should return NIL (out-of-database) value. Existing techniques for linking named entities in text mostly focus on Wikipedia as a target catalog of entities. Yet for many types of entities, such as restaurants and cult movies, relational databases exist that contain far more extensive information than Wikipedia. In this dissertation, we introduce a new framework, called Open-Database Entity Linking (Open-DB EL), in which a system must be able to resolve named entities to symbols in an arbitrary database, without requiring labeled data for each new database. In experiments on two domains, our Open-DB EL strategies outperform a state-of-the-art Wikipedia EL system by over 25% in accuracy. Existing approaches typically perform EL using a pipeline architecture: they use a Named-Entity Recognition (NER) system to find the boundaries of mentions in text, and an EL system to connect the mentions to entries in structured or semi-structured repositories like Wikipedia. However, the two tasks are tightly coupled, and each type of system can benefit significantly from the kind of information provided by the other. We propose and develop a joint model for NER and EL, called NEREL, that takes a large set of candidate mentions from typical NER systems and a large set of candidate entity links from EL systems, and ranks the candidate mention-entity pairs together to make joint predictions. In NER and EL experiments across three datasets, NEREL significantly outperforms or comes close to the performance of two state-of-the-art NER systems, and it outperforms 6 competing EL systems. On the benchmark MSNBC dataset, NEREL, provides a 60% reduction in error over the next best NER system and a 68% reduction in error over the next-best EL system. We also extend the idea of using semi-structured resources to a relatively less explored area of entity information extraction. Most previous work on information extraction from text has focused on named-entity recognition, entity linking, and relation extraction. Much less attention has been paid to extracting the temporal scope for relations between named-entities; for example, the relation president-Of (John F. Kennedy, USA) is true only in the time-frame (January 20, 1961 - November 22, 1963). In this dissertation we present a system for temporal scoping of relational facts, called TSRF which is trained on distant supervision based on the largest semi-structured resource available: Wikipedia. TSRF employs language models consisting of patterns automatically bootstrapped from sentences collected from Wikipedia pages that contain the main entity of a page and slot-fillers extracted from the infobox tuples. This proposed system achieves state-of-the-art results on 6 out of 7 relations on the benchmark Text Analysis Conference (TAC) 2013 dataset for the task of temporal slot filling (TSF). Overall, the system outperforms the next best system that participated in the TAC evaluation by 10 points on the TAC-TSF evaluation metric.

Institutions of Higher Education have to re-think, among others, their teaching and learning strategies including the integration and use of technology. Although the use of technology in higher education is still in the early stages, the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) is growing rapidly. The University of Stellenbosch started to integrate the Internet in their teaching in 1998. Research was undertaken to find a suitable on-line course management system and Web Course Tools (WebCT) was chosen for this purpose. Since it was implemented, the use of WebCT has grown exponentially, although in most cases only as an add-on to classroom lectures. The World Health Organisation (WHO) Mental Health Disorders in Primary Care programme was the first programme developed as a full distance education course, delivered completely by means of WebCT and making use of the team approach to programme development. This programme was therefore chosen as the case study for this research. The purpose of this study is to apply 24 internationally developed benchmarks for quality on-line distance education to the WebCT component of the WHO programme in order to determine the applicability of these benchmarks for World Wide Web (WWW) programmes at the University of Stellenbosch. The research strategy for this study is a qualitative case study. Qualitative data was obtained by conducting semi-structured interviews with the individuals involved in the design, development and implementation of the WHO course. The study concludes that the 24 benchmarks cannot be applied to the current University of Stellenbosch context. The systems at the US will either have to be adapted, or established to meet the requirements of the international benchmarks. Another option for the US could be to develop their own benchmarks, taking international guidelines into account.

Online company registration is a service, which has been claimed by Congo-Brazzaville immigrant entrepreneurs. It has taken centuries for scientists to develop computers that successfully enable businesses to grow in an effective erasure of national frontiers for business purposes. B2B e-commerce, which heralded the dawn of globalisation in the EU, USA, India, New Zealand and South Africa, is not yet applicable in Congo- Brazzaville. Presently, B2B e-commerce has made the global economy porous, which consequently activated online business registration. This porosity has enabled SMMEs to save supply chain management costs, create jobs, improve customer care and contribute to the country’s GDP. However, owing to the characteristics of Congolese immigrants’ SMMEs in Cape Town, online business registration has become imperative to enable them to expand in Congo and to save supply chain management costs and contribute to the country’s economic reconstruction process. Recently, the Centre For Business and Administrative Procedures (CFBAP): Centre des Formalités Administratives des Entreprises’ (CFE) B2B e-commerce website has become in demand. Furthermore, at a national level, e-commerce website adoption at CFBAP will leverage the country’s standards of conducting business and will boost the pride of CFBAP, as an organisation, as well as its partners in an aspect that is at the core of its values. The main objective of this study is to analyse the benefits of online business registration for Congo-Brazzaville immigrant entrepreneurs in Cape Town. The study has established motivating factors to implement an e-commerce website at CFBAP in Brazzaville, but did not recommend any specific e-commerce technology for the institution. The research has also made an earnest attempt to illicit reasons why Congo-Brazzaville immigrant entrepreneurs invest in Brazzaville in spite of being well established in Cape Town. The research target population included Congo-Brazzaville immigrant entrepreneurs who were selected from their association and who live in Cape Town, where the study was conducted. The nature of the research dictated both quantitative and qualitative methodologies in order to gain a better understanding of the research problem that was identified. Key words: E-commerce, CFE, Congo-Brazzaville, World Bank, SMMEs, immigrants, Centre for Business and Administrative Procedures (CFBAP).
