Abstract What are the prospects for a linguistic approach to ontology? Given that it seems that there are true subject-predicate sentences containing empty names, traditional linguistic approaches to ontology appear to be flawed. I argue that in order to determine what there is, we need to determine which sentences ascribe properties (and relations) to objects, and that there does not appear to be any formal criterion for this. This view is then committed to giving an account of what predicates do in sentences when they do not ascribe properties. I sketch an approach to the varieties of predication.

AbstractThis paper presents a novel approach to ontology localization with the objective of obtaining multilingual ontologies. Within the ontology development process, ontology localization has been defined as the activity of adapting an ontology to a concrete linguistic and cultural community. Depending on the ontology layers – terminological and/or conceptual – involved in the ontology localization activity, three heterogeneous multilingual ontology metamodels have been identified, of which we propose one of them. Our proposal consists in associating the ontology metamodel to an external model for representing and structuring lexical and terminological data in different natural languages. Our model has been called Linguistic Information Repository (LIR). The main advantages of this modelling modality rely on its flexibility by allowing (1) the enrichment of any ontology element with as much linguistic information as needed by the final application, and (2) the establishment of links among linguistic elements within and across different natural languages. The LIR model has been designed as an ontology of linguistic elements and is currently available in Web Ontology Language (OWL). The set of lexical and terminological data that it provides to ontology elements enables the localization of any ontology to a certain linguistic and cultural universe. The LIR has been evaluated against the multilingual requirements of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in the framework of the NeOn project. It has proven to solve multilingual representation problems related to the establishment of well-defined relations among lexicalizations within and across languages, as well as conceptualization mismatches among different languages. Finally, we present an extension to the Ontology Metadata Vocabulary, the so-called LexOMV, with the aim of reporting on multilinguality at the ontology metadata level. By adding this contribution to the LIR model, we account for multilinguality at the three levels of an ontology: data level, knowledge representation level and metadata level.

DSOFSW interpreta consultas en lenguaje natural (español) para la Web, y está compuesta por cinco partes: una ontología lingüística para la gramática del español, un lexicón para la información léxica, una base de datos de hechos sobre el sistema de experiencias, una ontología de tareas para los procesos de análisis lingüísticos, y una ontología interpretativa para el contexto. SALOX integra varios métodos, enfoques y técnicas para la extracción de información, descubrimiento y actualización (pragmática (perfil de usuario, conocimiento de contexto), información léxica y de lingüística semántica, etc.) con el fin de actualizar el conocimiento usado para DSOFSW. SALOX tiene un componente que mapea las fuentes de aprendizaje con los métodos de aprendizaje, y otro que actualiza la ontología lingüística y el lexicón del DSOFSW. Específicamente, en este artículo presentamos el diseño de la unidad de aprendizaje de información léxica. DSOFSW interprets query in natural language (Spanish) to the web, and is composed by five parts; a linguistic ontology for the grammar of Spanish, a lexicon for the lexical information, a database of facts about the system experiences, a task ontology for the linguistic analysis process, and an interpretative ontology of the context. SALOX integrates several methods, approaches and techniques for information extraction, discovery and actualization (pragmatic (user profile, context knowledge), lexical and semantic linguistic information, etc.) in order to update the knowledge used for DSOFSW. SALOX has a component to map the sources of learning with the learning methods, and another to update the linguistic ontology and the lexicon of the DSOFSW. Specifically, in this paper we present the design of the learning unit of lexical information. The article analyzes the philosophical and evaluation paradigm of linguistic means for denoting the concepts of war and peace in the context of present-day Ukraine. The realization of the functional and stylistic potential of language in expressing the socio-political and philosophical opposition of hostile parties in the context of the division of values into their own and othersʼ has been traced in the linguistic and information space. Analyzed vocabulary, precedent units, metaphors, epithets, which are indicative of modern texts of the Means of mass communication and which express the linguistics of the national public consciousness. War in the minds of society is always associated with aggression: destruction, distress, death, and peace with peace, peace, life. Such perception of these phenomena is entrenched in the antonymic ratio of two eternal words of the Ukrainian dictionary war – peace. The basic element of their opposition is the original semantics of the word war, which contains a contradictory feature, which is denied in the definition of peace. The ontology of war and peace in the linguistic and informational texts of today corresponds to the psychological attitudes of society and is a reflection of the current socio-political situation in the country. Around the war and peace as the nuclear concepts of the Means of mass communicationand, a synchronous linguistic-evaluative paradigm is formed, which is an expression of the linguistic-national consciousness, an indicator of the philosophical comprehension of a specific time period of the history of Ukraine in general, and of the functional capabilities of the language in particular.

Social networks provide researchers with the opportunity to obtain an array of text data for further analysis within a certain subject area. Each subject area has its own specific professional vocabulary and writing style. When defining the subject area of text material there is a big problem with building dictionaries, thesauri, and ontologies. In this article a linguistic ontology is considered under ontology and which is aimed to determine the subject area of text material. An algorithm for the automatic construction of an ontology based on the Wikidata knowledge graph is presented. The task is to map a set of objects of the Wikidata knowledge graph to a set of entities of a linguistic ontology. The article pro-poses an algorithm for determining the degree of belonging of the text material to the subject area. Experiments on assessing the time of building an ontology and the applicability of the obtained linguistic ontologies to the problem of determining the degree of belonging of text materials in the subject area have shown: the running time of the algorithm and the number of terms in the formed ontology are directly proportional to the number of analyzed properties and Wikidata objects; the formed linguistic ontology is applicable to the problem of determining the degree of belonging of a text to a subject area

This paper considers the Kantian philosophical tradition in western language philosophy of the XXth century, describes the ways of its influence and argues the existence of the “Kantian language philosophy tradition” as a continuous stage to be a certain evolutionary line in the history of philosophy. By now one ignores the influence of Kantian philosophy upon “those not pee linguistic turn” and does not esteem I. Kant as a philosopher of language, nor counts his influence in this sphere. The mode of this influence is uncertain and represents various views from synthesis to direct evolution. To discover this issue the author of this paper tries to find a metaphysic core element in language ontology, inherited by the analytic philosophers from I. Kant’s writings; conducts a comparative research of the aforementioned authors’ papers, extracts derived from I. Kant core metaphysical aspect in language ontology and a textological analysis, historical reconstruction. The researchers ignore historical and ontological links between language philosophy, Kantian and the analytical tradition due to a philological development of academic linguistics in the late XIXth – XXth centuries. Following the Kantian tradition in philosophy theories of the analytic philosophers (particularly W. Qwine and P. Strawson) contain the metaphysical core in language ontology, primarily in its syncretic essence of logical, semantic and utterly linguistic categories (i. e. the scheme of concepts, sense, universals, etc.). Syncretism of logical and linguistic essence in terms is also typical for the Kantian philosophy and characterizes the Kantian philosophy to be a source for the linguistic one, and a fully expressed the “Kantian language philosophy tradition”.

This paper discusses a method for corpus-driven ontology design: extracting conceptual hierarchies from arbitrary domain-specific collections of texts. These hierarchies can form the basis for a concept-oriented (onomasiological) terminology collection, and hence may be used as the basis for developing knowledge-based systems using ontology editors. This reference to ontology is explored in the context of collections of terms. The method presented is a hybrid of statistical and linguistic techniques, employing statistical techniques initially to elicit a conceptual hierarchy, which is then augmented through linguistic analysis. The result of such an extraction may be useful in information retrieval, knowledge management, or in the discipline of terminology science itself.

Ontology is adopted as a standard for knowledge representation on the Semantic Web, and Ontology Web Language (OWL) is used to add structure and meaning to web applications. In order to share and resue the fuzzy knowledge on the Semantic Web, we propose the fuzzy linguistic variables ontology (FLVO), which utilizes ontology to represent formally the fuzzy linguistic variables and defines the semantic relationships between fuzzy concepts. Then fuzzy rules are described in Semantic Web Rule Language (SWRL) on the basis of FLVO model. Taking a sample case for students’ performance in physics for example, the fuzzy rule management system is built by using the tool protégé and SWRLTab, which shows that this research enables distributed fuzzy applications on the Semantic Web.

The problem of explaining the knowledge possessed by a native speaker of a natural language and the philosophical problem of rule-following are juxtaposed, and the former is seen to be an instance of the latter. A recent solution to the rule-following problem is reviewed, with special attention to the consequences that the solution has for the nature of those concepts acquired from exemplars. The concept of a grammatical sentence is one of these. Finally, it is shown that, as a consequence, we can see the grammaticality of a sentence to be an abstract property, which is simultaneously objective and tied to the responses of competent speakers. Thus, we gain a better understanding of some central questions in the philosophy of linguistics.

dolce, the first top-level (foundational) ontology to be axiomatized, has remained stable for twenty years and today is broadly used in a variety of domains. dolce is inspired by cognitive and linguistic considerations and aims to model a commonsense view of reality, like the one human beings exploit in everyday life in areas as diverse as socio-technical systems, manufacturing, financial transactions and cultural heritage. dolce clearly lists the ontological choices it is based upon, relies on philosophical principles, is richly formalized, and is built according to well-established ontological methodologies, e.g. OntoClean. Because of these features, it has inspired most of the existing top-level ontologies and has been used to develop or improve standards and public domain resources (e.g. CIDOC CRM, DBpedia and WordNet). Being a foundational ontology, dolce is not directly concerned with domain knowledge. Its purpose is to provide the general categories and relations needed to give a coherent view of reality, to integrate domain knowledge, and to mediate across domains. In these 20 years dolce has shown that applied ontologies can be stable and that interoperability across reference and domain ontologies is a reality. This paper briefly introduces the ontology and shows how to use it on a few modeling cases.

The goal of Ontology Learning from Text is to learn ontologies that represent domains or applications that change often. Manually learning and updating such ontologies is too expensive. This is the reason for the Ontology Learning discipline's emergence. The leading approach to Ontology Learning from Text is the Ontology Learning Layer Cake. This approach splits the task into four or five sequential tasks. Each of the tasks may use diverse methods, ranging from uses of Linguistic knowledge to Machine Learning. The authors review the shortcomings of the Ontology Learning Layer Cake approach and conclude that the approach is not viable for Ontology Learning from Text. They suggest alternative approaches that may help learning ontologies in an efficient, effective way.

The purpose of the article is to investigate and consider the general trends, problems and prospects of designing and using linguistic ontologies in educational intellectual systems. The research methodology consists in semantic analysis methods of the basic concepts in the considered subject area (linguistic ontologies in the educational intellectual systems). The article discusses approaches to the use of linguistic models in modern educational intelligent systems. The novelty of the research is the analysis of the linguistic ontologies use in the educational intellectual systems. Conclusions. A model of linguistic ontology for the domain (disciplines “Computer Networks” and “Modelling Systems”) is presented. This model is used in the development of an educational intellectual system that supports online learning in these disciplines. The proposed model describes a set of relations of linguistic ontology, specially selected to describe the analyzed domain. To ensure these properties, it was proposed to use a small set of relationships. The proposed linguistic ontological model is implemented in an educational intelligent system that supports such disciplines as “Computer Networks” and “Modelling Systems”.

In our opinion, * `logical basis` and *` syntactic basis` are incorrect from a cognitive point of view. The subjunctive is a syntactic category and the qualification `logical` is an oxymoron, or at least a dissonance. In logic, the category is the subject. And since the subjunctive is the syntactic category, even more disturbing is the tautological * `syntactic subjunctive`. The article substantiates the cognitive reading of the substratum. What is new is the derivation of linguistic ontology as a category of the cognitive method in syntax, of cognitive syntax.

Why are fog, dew, and frost said to “fall” in some languages when they don’t in the physical world? We explore this seeming infelicity to study the nature of linguistic conceptualization. We focus on variations and changes of the morphosemantic behaviors of weather words in Mandarin and other Sinitic languages with an interdisciplinary approach to establish links between linguistic expressions and scientific facts. We propose that this use of directionality is the result of conventionalization of Chinese people’s inference from shared daily experience, and is well motivated in terms of a linguistic ontology that reflects a scientific account of natural phenomena. We further demonstrate that the semantically relevant orthography shared by Chinese speakers can be directly mapped to Hantology, a formal linguistic ontology based on Suggested Upper Merged Ontology (SUMO). In this mapping, the radical 雨 yǔ “rain,” derived from the ideograph of “rain” to represent atmospheric water, provides crucial clues to the use of directional verbs and the parts of speech of weather words. Our findings also lend support to language-based reconstruction of traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and lay foundation for TEK research in the Sinosphere.

Ontology is the basis of knowledge modeling on the Semantic Web, and fuzzy ontology is an extension of domain ontology for solving the uncertainty problems. Ontology-base knowledge modeling of product data management (PDM) is meaningful for product design and trade etc. In order to handle fuzzy phenomenon and uncertainty of product knowledge, this paper proposes a series of fuzzy ontology models that consists of fuzzy domain ontology and fuzzy linguistic variable ontologies. Then, a fuzzy ontology framework is presented, including three parts: concepts, properties of concepts and values of properties. The application, which uses fuzzy ontology to model product knowledge, shows that these models can overcome the localization of other fuzzy ontology models, and this research facilitates the fuzzy knowledge sharing and reuse for PDM on the Semantic Web.

Введение. С функционально-стилистических позиций рассматривается содержание и лингводидактический потенциал креативной стилистики как нового лингвистического направления.Цель – развитие идей Н. А. Купиной и Т. В. Матвеевой в плане расширения проблемного поля креативной стилистики.Материал и методы. Теоретическим материалом для статьи послужили труды М. Н. Кожиной, Н. А. Купиной, Т. В. Матвеевой, М. П. Котюровой и др.; эмпирическим материалом – фрагменты текстов разной стилевой принадлежности, репрезентирующие креативность их авторов. В исследовании используются функционально-стилевой и междисциплинарный подходы, предполагающие анализ речевой креативности в ее экстралингвистической обусловленности.Результаты исследования. В отношении онтологического содержания креативной стилистики показано, что ее выделение в самостоятельную область речеведения подготовлено идеями М. Н. Кожиной о разграничении языковой и речевой экспрессии. Обсуждаются связи креативной стилистики с рядом дисциплин, объединенных антропоцентрической парадигмой: стилистикой ресурсов, лингвопрагматикой, дискурсологией и др. С учетом концепции Н. А. Купиной и Т. В. Матвеевой конкретизируются задачи креативной стилистики. Рассмотрена специфика креативного компонента в функциональных разновидностях письменной речи: художественной, медийной, научной и деловой. Установлено, что креативность соотносится не только с поверхностно-речевой, но и с содержательно-смысловой стороной текста, по-разному проявляясь в зависимости от функционально-стилистических и дискурсивных параметров речи.Приводятся примеры как продуктивного, так и непродуктивного использования креативных средств в текстах сетевой литературы, СМИ и рекламы. Отмечено, что в научных текстах специфика креативности связана с природой познавательной деятельности и проявляется в интеллектуальной экспрессии при изложении нового знания, на репрезентацию которого оказывает влияние индивидуальный стиль речи ученого. В деловой сфере креативность связана с появлением новых интерактивных форм коммуникации власти и общества и обнаруживается прежде всего в недокументных жанрах.В отношении лингводидактического содержания креативной стилистики обсуждается необходимость формирования креативной языковой личности, востребованной в современном обществе. Утверждается, что решению этой задачи способствует комплексный подход к обучению языку, включающий вербально-семантический, когнитивный и прагмастилистический компоненты лингводидактики.Заключение. Интерпретация креативности с учетом экстралингвистических и дискурсивных факторов общения вписывается в парадигму современного речеведения и обусловливает широкие возможности креативной стилистики в изучении творческого компонента речевой деятельности во всем ее многообразии. Introduction. The contents and linguistic-didactic potential of the new linguistic trend are studied in the article from the viewpoint of functional-stylistics. Aim and objectives – developing the ideas of N. A. Kupina and T. V. Matveeva, the founders of creative stylistics, and extending of its problematic. Material and methods. M. N. Kozhyna, N. A. Kupina, T. V. Matveeva, M. P. Kotyurova and others served as the theoretical material for the article; fragments of texts, which represent the creativity of their authors, served as empirical material. The research uses functional-stylistic and interdisciplinary approaches that analyze speech creativity in its extralinguistic causality. Results and discussion. The article reveals that the rise of creative stylistics as an independent area of speech studies was caused by M. N. Kozhina’s ideas on the differentiation between linguistic and verbal expressions. The links of creative stylistics with a number of disciplines united by anthropocentric paradigm are discussed, that is: resource stylistics, linguistic-pragmatics, discourse theory, etc. The tasks of creative stylistics are specified with the authors taking into account N. A. Kupina’s and T. V. Matveyeva’s conception. In the article the authors present the specificity of creative component in functional varieties of written speech: artistic, media, scientific and official texts. The authors find that creativity relates not only to surface layer but also to the semantic layer of the text, that diversity of manifestation depends on the functional, stylistic and discursive parameters of speech. The authors provide the examples of both productive and non-productive use of creative media in the texts of network literature, media and advertising. The authors point out that creativity in scientific texts is connected with the nature of cognitive activity, that creativity manifests itself through intellectual expressiveness while presenting new knowledge, that the scientist’s individual speech style influences the presentation. In the official sphere, creativity is associated with the emergence of new interactive forms of communication between administration and community and it is found primarily in non-documentary genres. Based on the achievements of creative pedagogics, the objectives and contents of adjacent applied disciplines (didactics, speech culture etc.) are adjusted to the necessity of forming a creative linguistic personality (in demand in the modern society). It is stated that the complex approach to language teaching, including verbal-semantic, cognitive and pragmatic-stylistic components of didactics helps to respond to the challenge. Conclusion. The interpretation of creativity with extralinguistic and discursive factors of communication being taken into account fits in the paradigm of modern speech studies and provides wide opportunities for creative stylistics in the research of the creative component of speech activity in all its diversity.

The ontological question of what there is, from the perspective of common sense, is intricately bound to what can be perceived. The above observation, when combined with the fact that nouns within language can be divided between nouns that admit counting, such as ‘pen’ or ‘human’, and those that do not, such as ‘water’ or ‘gold’, provides the starting point for the following investigation into the foundations of our linguistic and conceptual phenomena. The purpose of this paper is to claim that such phenomena are facilitated by, on the one hand, an intricate cognitive capacity, and on the other by the complex environment within which we live. We are, in a sense, cognitively equipped to perceive discrete instances of matter such as bodies of water. This equipment is related to, but also differs from, that devoted to the perception of objects such as this computer. Behind this difference in cognitive equipment underlies a rich ontology, the beginnings of which lies in the distinction between matter and objects. The following paper is an attempt to make explicit the relationship between matter and objects and also provide a window to our cognition of such entities.

Ontologies are used in several application domains for representing knowledge. The defined approaches differ according to the type of addressed ontology (conceptual or linguistic) and to the used ontology model (e.g. OWL or PLIB). Several languages have been proposed to manipulate ontologies and their instances, especially in the Semantic Web domain. However these languages are often specific to a given ontology model, they focus on conceptual ontologies and they are not compatible with database exploitation languages. We address these three problems in this paper by proposing the OntoQL language. This language has three main original characteristics: (1) OntoQL is based on a core ontology model composed of the shared constructors of ontology models. This core ontology model can be extended by the language itself, (2) OntoQL queries can be expressed with different natural languages features using the linguistic layer of an ontology, and (3) OntoQL is fully compatible with SQL enabling a smooth integration between SQL queries of classical database applications and ontological queries. As a theoretical validation of this language, we present the algebra of operators that sets up its formal semantics. On the operational side, we describe the implementation of OntoQL on the OntoDB database and we illustrate the interest of this language by reporting several applications where this language has been extensively used and proved powerful.

This paper develops an ontology of sound from Merleau-Ponty’s accounts of linguistic expression and political communication framed in terms of the instituted-instituting character of the “flesh.” The analysis explores the role of sound and hearing in experiencing and making sense of a world in order to explain two (arguably related) problems: first, the impact of hearing loss on a person’s relations with others and with their environment and, second, the impact of “trump talk” on the fabric of political community. The argument is that hearing loss and “trump talk” weaken or erase what Merleau-Ponty refers to as the “spirit” of communication and intersubjectivity.

The application without knowledge of an ontological type allows updating considerably quality of problem solutions in natural language processing. A number of researchers use Wikipedia as a basis for the formation of such resources. This paper reports the formalization method of Wikipedia structures and linguistic ontology used in the developed by the authors system of the linguistic ontology formation a specified subject field from Wikipedia. The papers and references connecting them serve a purpose for formation of a weighted graph of ontology to the graph nodes correspond notions, and to the ribs of graph – fuzzy semantic relations between them. The references obtain different weights depending on entering this or that information unit on a page. By a graph of relations it is possible to estimate numerically the degree of semantic proximity of two arbitrary concepts. For this purpose it is possible to use different measures of semantic proximity. Recursive measures possess considerable computational complexity at insignificant improvement of quality in test problem solution in comparison with nonrecursive local measures of the Dice measure type that is unacceptable for the ontology large enough. From these considerations the Dice weighted measure is chosen as a basic one for the system under development.

The use of information technology in linguistic research gave rise in the 1950s to what is known as Natural Language Processing, but that framework was created without paying due attention to the need for logical reconstruction of linguistic concepts which were borrowed directly from barely (or even not at all) formalised structural linguistics. The Computer-aided Acquisition of Semantic Knowledge project (CASK) based on the Knowledge Discovery in Databases technology (KDD) enabled us to interact with computers while gathering and improving our knowledge about languages. Thus, with the help of data mining tools, as a result of revisiting two sorts of generally admitted linguistic theories (the Predicate Argument Structure theory and Information Structure theory), we succeeded in improving these local linguistic approaches by proposing to unify the Associative Semantics (AS) theory (in which we introduced the concept of ortho-information) with the Meta-Informative Centering (MIC) theory (in which we described the meta-informative layer of natural languages). The resulting Distributed Grammar (DG) program (sketched out in this paper) treats, in addition to the above types of information, the third one, para-information (concerning identity and alikeness with respect to context and language ontology) which – despite many studies – had no uniform theoretical background in general linguistics. This DG program aims to lay the foundations for creating the theoretical background of Conceptual Linguistics.

When using natural language, people typically refer to individual things by using proper names or definite descriptions. Data modeling languages differ considerably in their support for such linguistic reference schemes. Understanding these differences is important for modeling reference schemes within such languages and for transforming models from one language to another. This article provides a comparative review of reference scheme modeling within the Unified Modeling Language (version 2.5), the Barker dialect of Entity Relationship modeling, Object-Role Modeling (version 2), relational database modeling, and the Web Ontology Language (version 2.0). The author identifies which kinds of reference schemes can be captured within these languages as well as those reference schemes that cannot be. The author's analysis covers simple reference schemes, compound reference schemes, disjunctive reference and context-dependent reference schemes.

This paper explores the linguistic patterns of instrumentality in the titles of English medical research papers, at the interface between conceptual and linguistic structure, and offers a contribution to the little studied interrelationships between static and dynamic conceptual relations in medical ontology and LSP terminology. It is demonstrated how causal cues constitute the conceptual background against which instrumentals are profiled in the causal chain of the medical model. Taking inspiration from Talmy, frame semantics and construction grammar, the linguistic patterns in which causal and instrumental frame elements are co-activated are transcribed as complex patterns with partial morphological, syntactic and lexical marking of the conceptual relations under study. The paper offers an exploratory typology of causal cues for instrumentals and describes how multiple instruments can appear in medical LSP. The findings are relevant for those interested in the nexus between ontology, constructional aspects of expert language and frame semantics

Annotation of Business Processes with semantic tags taken from a domain ontology is beneficial to several activities conducted on Business Processes, such as comprehension, documentation, analysis and evolution. On the other hand, the task of semantically annotating Business Processes is time-consuming and far from trivial. The authors support Business Process designers in the annotation of process elements by automatically suggesting candidate concepts. The annotation suggestions are computed on the basis of a similarity measure between the text information associated with process element labels and the ontology concepts. In turn, this requires support for the disambiguation of terms appearing in ontology concepts, which admit multiple linguistic senses, and for ontology extension, when the available concepts are insufficient.

Syntactic-semantic treebank for domain ontology creationThis paper focuses on the creation of a domain treebank for the purposes of compiling a domain ontology. The domain treebank is viewed as a suitable resource for extracting of semantic relations from syntactic structures. First, the steps for ontology building are considered. Then, the processing over glossaries and standards is described with regard to their syntactic annotation. The utility of deriving semantic knowledge from the Treebank is also illustrated via the basic phrases. The idea is that the domain knowledge is represented in the domain data, but via treebanking more linguistic patterns can be extracted, which to be mapped to concepts and relations in a domain ontology.

From this perspective, the use of formal models to represent information on the web is a suitable way to allow the cooperation of users and services. This paper describes a general ontological approach to represent knowledge using multimedia data and linguistic properties to bridge the gap between the target semantic classes and the available low-level multimedia descriptors. We choose to implement our approach in a system to edit, manage and share multimedia ontology in the WEB. The system provides tools to add multimedia objects by means of user interaction. The multimedia features are automatically extracted using algorithms based on standard MPEG-7 descriptors.

Annotation and research in the humanities are tightly coupled. Annotations can be seen as expressions of research activity which can be turned into input data for subsequent research. The digital paradigm has profoundly altered the ways in which we humans can handle the information content of our sources and it also affects the practice of annotation. We explore new ways of annotation that were not feasible before the digital times, and we list a few requirements for annotation to act as a reliable source of research information. Rather than conducting an academic discussion on the ontology of annotations, we highlight practical use cases for new kinds of annotations. We illustrate those in a concrete system for linguistic annotations to the Hebrew Bible, SHEBANQ.
