Il presente studio si propone d’indagare alcuni aspetti dell’apprendimento in età adulta, e in particolare dell’apprendimento della lingua inglese, in Italia. Esso si colloca nella prospettiva del lifelong learning e si inserisce nel filone di ricerca sulla validità degli assunti dell’andragogia. La metodologia utilizzata è lo studio di caso e gli adulti presi in considerazione sono persone in età compresa tra i 18 e i 65 e più anni, esclusi i giovani adulti universitari, e i loro docenti. La ricerca si è svolta in contesti di educazione formale e non formale e una parte di essa si focalizza sull’apprendimento e insegnamento della lingua inglese in contesto di lingua seconda al fine di operare un confronto a livello metodologico.This study investigates some of the aspects involved in the learning and teaching of the English language in adulthood in Italy. It aims at providing evidence of the validity of certain assumptions of andragogy and it is based on the direct observation of class work and data collection from 497 informants: 445 students of English in Italy and 22 students of English in Wales, between 18 and 65+ years of age, and 30 teachers of English, 26 working in Italy and 4 working in Wales.

Un fattore determinante che ha influito sull’enorme espansione dell’inglese nel mondo, nel corso degli ultimi secoli, è stato il ruolo assunto da tale lingua sulla scena mondiale, in particolare nell’ambito economico-culturale: l’inglese è uscito dai suoi confini naturali diventando lingua globale, entrando in contatto con nuovi ambienti e diverse lingue e di conseguenza sviluppando nuove varietà che probabilmente diventeranno in futuro nuove lingue autonome.
Oggi anche in Cina, contrariamente al passato, non molto lontano, si avverte un forte e diffuso desiderio di imparare l'inglese, soprattutto tra le giovani generazioni, tra le persone istruite e preferibilmente tra coloro che vivono in città o che hanno contatti al di fuori dei confini nazionali e che utilizzano l’inglese come lingua della comunicazione scientifica, economica, finanziaria e tecnologia. L’inglese non è più considerato una minaccia, sia culturale che politica dal governo che ne incentiva l’apprendimento. Questa crescita nel numero di persone che imparano e parlano inglese, parallelamente alla diffusione di tale lingua, favorisce la nascita e l’affermazione di una nuova varietà linguistica che va sempre più differenziandosi dall’inglese originario. La presente ricerca si propone di analizzare tale fenomeno di variazione dell’inglese in Cina, attraverso l’osservazione e la rilevazione di dati riguardanti l'uso e le occorrenze del genitivo sassone e di altre strutture premodificatrici del sostantivo, caratterizzanti questa emergente varietà di lingua inglese, indagando al tempo stesso anche alcune sue fondamentali coordinate socio-linguistiche.The crucial factor in the development of English over the last few centuries is its role in the world arena. English has been brought into contact with new environments and languages, and, as a result, has developed into new directions and into new varieties. In today’s China there is an astounding desire to learn English, especially among the educated and the people living in cities, and to use it as a means of communication outside the national borders. This growth in the number of people, who learn and speak English, seems to be contributing to a distinctive variety. The present research aims at contributing to this field of study by analyzing the use and occurrences of the Saxon genitive, of-constructions, and other noun modification structures within this emerging variety of English and the framework of its sociolinguistic features.

L’obiettivo di questo lavoro è fornire una panoramica generale dell’acquisizione della lingua dei segni nei bambini sordi, confrontandola con il percorso che avviene nei loro coetanei udenti. Nel primo capitolo verrà illustrato il quadro teorico e le tappe principali dell’acquisizione del linguaggio; verranno valutate le analogie tra i due processi nell’ambito delle lingue vocali e segnate, soprattutto dal punto di vista degli stadi temporali che ogni bambino attraversa. Saranno poi descritte le varie ipotesi linguistiche sull’acquisizione, infine verrà approfondito il ruolo dello stimolo linguistico che il bambino riceve dall’ambiente esterno e la sua influenza nell’intero processo.
Il secondo capitolo è dedicato all’acquisizione nei bambini sordi, con un particolare approfondimento sulla particolare importanza dell’esposizione precoce all’input. Successivamente verranno illustrati i processi di acquisizione del sistema fonologico, dell’accordo verbale e della morfologia non manuale; quest’ultima è un elemento caratteristico delle lingue segnate, che si distingue dalla gestualità comunicativa che è propria sia delle persone udenti che di quelle non udenti.
Infine verranno riportati alcuni degli studi più salienti sulle lingue dei segni ed alcuni aspetti della loro acquisizione: questi studi sono di notevole interesse sia perché in alcuni casi riguardano la Lingua dei segni Italiana sia perché affrontano le lingue dei segni da diverse prospettive, considerando il possibile bilinguismo dei bambini sordi e come questo bilinguismo possa svilupparsi e infine quali siano punti in comune e differenze tra l’acquisizione di una lingua naturale dopo il periodo critico e l’acquisizione di una seconda lingua in età adulta.

Nel momento in cui una persona Sorda si appresta ad imparare o approfondire, come nel
caso specifico che riporterò nella mia tesi, una lingua vocale straniera è importare tenere in
considerazione vari fattori: la storia personale e scolastica del discente, il suo livello di
competenza nella propria L1, la motivazione che lo porta ad imparare la lingua straniera, le
sue abilità linguistiche.
Proprio per tutti i motivi sopra elencati, può risultare complesso lavorare sull’apprendimento
di quella che può essere la seconda lingua straniera dello studente (la prima risulta essere
l’italiano).
Di tutti questi aspetti ho dovuto tenere conto nel momento in cui,
nell’estate 2019 ho accompagnato una studentessa Sorda di 17 anni a Londra per
un’esperienza di viaggio – studio della durata di quindici giorni.

L’obiettivo di questo studio è di analizzare la performance di studenti/esse italiani/e bilingui tardivi/e di inglese in un task che utilizza il metodo del priming cross-linguistico. (numero di partecipanti) studenti/esse nativi/e di italiano con basso e buon livello di inglese hanno partecipato allo studio come volontari. L’esperimento si compone di 28 frasi priming in inglese associate a 28 immagini con 28 verbi in italiano. Ogni frase priming è introdotta da una frase filler in inglese. Le frasi priming erano sia di tipo transitivo sia di tipo dativo. Inoltre, le frasi dative erano di due tipi, con preposizioni e a doppio oggetto e presentavano le seguenti condizioni: stesso verbo tra frase priming e frase target oppure verbo differente tra le due frasi. Nell’esperimento, i/le partecipanti, dopo aver letto le frasi filler e priming, descrivevano un’immagine con una frase in italiano. Nella descrizione è stato chiesto loro di utilizzare il verbo indicato sotto l’immagine. I risultati dimostrano un forte priming con le frasi transitive e dative con preposizione in tutti/e i/le partecipanti. Le costruzioni a doppio oggetto sembrano essere le più problematiche. Tuttavia, risultati interessanti vengono dalle frasi che presentavano la condizione stesso verbo manifestando un effetto di “lexical boost”.

English is today’s global language, mother tongue to almost 400 million people in the world and studied and used as a second language by roughly 2 billion. But numbers alone do not account for its importance and preference as the world’s lingua franca. What makes its studying profitable is certainly its value for time/money spent: being a language structurally poor and highly scalable, it requires little effort on the part of an inexperienced learner to grasp its basic grammar and vocabulary, while compensating more motivated learners with increasing possibilities of expression in specialized areas.
Concerning grammar and syntax, English is among the simplest languages in the world, and though the idea of simplicity is subjective and debatable, when contrasted to Italian grammatical and syntactical variations one cannot but recognize its straightforwardness.
Why is it, then, that the performances in English of Italian students are so bad, whatever the survey? And how can they be improved?
In this work, we are going to investigate the linguistic reasons – and the tentative learning solutions – to such poor understanding. We think that one of the main reasons for Italians not performing well in English – or, for that matter, in all languages – might be correlated both to the texts they use and to their not knowing formally the Italian language they otherwise use very proficiently.
A review of textbooks, grammatical theories and syntax findings will be taken into account to show that English, in the end, is never presented to students, especially the youngest ones, in contrast to the Italian syntax or marketed as a simpler language than Italian. Rather, and especially because textbooks and grammars do not take into account learners’ first languages, it looks like just a subject that “must” be learnt because compulsory in the syllabus, thus depressing the motivation factor in students.
We propose some contrastive grammar points that might be introduced in English classes to Italian-speaking students, together with a motivation-building path in order to remarket English as a “simple”, as well as a playful, language to learn, detaching somewhat from the idea of “duty” or “usefulness” which is today dominant.

Se l’intermedialità da un lato non è riconducibile ad una serie di pratiche convenzionali, ma dipende dal contesto narrativo, dall’altro essa detiene un’organicità che la allinea funzionalmente ai processi e alle indagini sulla rappresentabilità del trauma. Inoltre, per la versatilità della sua natura poliedrica, la pratica narrativa intermediale (nelle sue configurazioni più diverse) assume una valenza epistemologica e metodologica nei confronti degli studi sull’esternazione e rielaborazione del trauma. Questo studio si prefigge di mettere a confronto testi teorici e testi narrativi per metterne in rilievo il reciproco apporto.Photography is used intermedially, recurring to different insertion modalities and strategies, to narrate countermemories and traumatic memories. Although intermediality is not ascribable to a series of convential practices, depending each of them on the narrative context, however it detains an organicity that guarantees the possibility to align it functionally to the processes and studies on the representability of trauma. Morever, because of the versatility of its poliedric nature, the narrative use of intermedial photographies (in their different declensions) retains an epistemological and methodological value for the studies on the externalization and processing of trauma. The aim of this study is to confront theoretical and narrative texts to analyze how they influence each other.

The object of this contribution is the analysis of teaching nomenclature in an LS context; specifically, business micro-language courses aimed at foreign learners with a medium-high level of education.
A theoretical part of this analysis, having the goal of setting references to the nomenclature and teaching such, is followed by a classification of the specific context in which it is employed; finally, there is an operational part that expresses a proposal for research designed to measure the satisfaction of the participants in the business micro-language course.
In the educational context of the LS approach, based on acquisition units mainly focused on the pragmatic aspects of knowing how to deal with the microlanguage, both visual language and media aids have been useful. It has been deemed necessary to facilitate analysis and reflection on the formal characteristics of micro-linguistic language as well as mathetic reflection: indeed, the study of the micro-language focuses intensively on the cognitive dimension.
The results of the context highlight the central role of the learner in micro-linguistic acquisition, as the definitive influence of their socio-linguistic, cognitive, and cultural background affects progress towards the target micro-language chosen; thus, the role of the intercultural dimension in teaching practice is important because the communicative micro-linguistic event is an intercultural meeting in which, besides the definition / mediation content shared, there is a potential degree of invention, creativity and variation in both semantic and linguistic terms.

This paper aims to stimulate the debate about Deaf humor and its importance for a better understanding of Deaf culture. At this purpose the show “PA PA” performed in Italian Sign Language (LIS) by the Deaf actor Gabriele Caia has been analyzed. The entire performance was divided in 58 little videos that present relevant information about the adopted humor strategies and the cultural references occurring in it. The analysis of “PA PA” show displays two features that has been already mentioned in the Deaf humor literature, such as: the visual nature of Deaf humor with its inner visual logic and knowledge of the world, and the creative use of sign language as an effective linguistic strategy to trigger laughter and amusement. At these elements other two features has been detected in the show, like the use of subtle, implicit humor against hearing oppression and discrimination, as well the use of the mainstream pejorative language as a technique that positively re-signify words thanks to humor and criticism.
In addition, the functions of Caia's humor follow and support the main reflections elaborated so far by researchers of Deaf humor. The actor uses humor to bond with Deaf members of the community; to show the less-desirable behavior of the Italian Deaf community; to criticize and belittle the hearing prejudice about the Deaf world.

The aim of this work is to provide a comparative grammar of English and Italian using some chapters of Harry Potter’s saga in its original version (J. K. Rowling, 1998, Harry Potter and the philosopher’s stone (Vol.1); 1999, Harry Potter and the chamber of the secrets (Vol.2) and its Italian translations (M. Astrologo, 1998, Harry Potter e la pietra filosofale, (Vol. 1); 1999, Harry Potter e la camera dei segreti (Vol.2).
The grammar will cover the following issues: Unmarked and marked word order in English and Italian clauses, the position of the subject, the verb phrase, the noun phrase and its constituents and parataxis VS hypotaxis.
The major differences between Italian and English will be discussed, among which the word order, the position of the subject and adjectives within the noun phrase and the quantity of main and subordinate clauses present in both versions.
In the course of the discussion, I will give evidence that challenges well-know biases about the English-Italian contrast, such as the supposed hypotactic nature of Italian as opposed to a paratactic nature of English.
I will also present some attrition in the position of subject and more generally of the word order in the Italian translation.

La tesi si focalizza sullo studio di un bambino con perdita temporanea dell'udito. In particolare sono state analizzate la produzione e la comprensione di frasi complesse come le frasi passive e relative in tale bambino attraverso l'uso di test specifici per la comprensione e la produzione di tali frasi. Lo scopo della tesi era verificare se il ritardo linguistico riscontrato nella tesi di laurea triennale "The Acquisition of Syntax: the case of a child with temporary hearing loss." fosse stato recuperato. Per raggiungere lo scopo, i risultati ottenuti nei test sono stati confrontati con gruppi di bambini della sua età e anche più piccoli. La tesi contiene inoltre due capitoli introduttivi sull'acquisizione di frasi relative e passive.

Irish English vernacular features represent an expression of Irish culture and heritage of the complex history of the country. Yet the syntactical structures contained within Irish English, which are different from standard British English, are often removed from speech. The relationship between the languages of English and Irish has been complex throughout history, and their contact has contributed to forging Irish English.
In my dissertation I propose to analyze the historical background behind the above mentioned contact, and to describe some of the most salient features of Irish English. I will then proceed to consider the results of Raymond Hickey’s A Survey of Irish English Usage, which was carried out in 2004, and I will then compare his findings to a survey I counducted in 2015, paying attention to the changing patterns displayed in the results. In the analysis the roles played by gender and age ranges in the perception of vernacular structures will be considered.
I will then investigate further by evaluating a batch of surveys I carried out in an Irish primary school, in an attempt to pinpoint the inception of this linguistic awareness and attitudes. I will finish by presenting my conclusion that age, gender, the role played by the educational system, and contact through social media and international contexts plays a role in the development of linguistic attitudes towards Irish English.

Questa tesi nasce per descrivere Wall Street English, una scuola d'inglese ad oggi molto conosciuta.
La tesi inizia con la descrizione di come è possibile imparare una lingua straniera, come l'inglese, studiando il ruolo che la mente ha in questo processo e la differenza tra imparare e acquisire una lingua. In seguito studia il ruolo della motivazione, i suoi tipi e i suoi modelli. Alla fine del primo capitolo vengono descritte le tecniche per insegnare una lingua straniera, quindi vengono descritti i metodi e gli approcci per fare ciò.
Il secondo capitolo si concentra sulla Wall Street English, descrivendone la storia e le sue idee chiave: la struttura dei centri e la loro distribuzione in Italia e nel mondo, l'origine del nome e del logo e il loro cambiamento nel tempo. Successivamente vengono descritti il metodo, basato sull'approccio comunicativo e non sul classico metodo scolastico grammaticale, e il processo dalla consulenza alle lezioni. Ci sono due gruppi di lezioni: le lezioni a computer che partendo da una storia fanno svolgere allo studente varie attività per rinforzare le abilità linguistiche, e le conversazioni con l'insegnante.
Nl terzo capitolo viene descritto il Customer Satisfaction Survey, ovvero un questionario che alcuni alunni Wall Street English hanno compilato parlando della loro esperienza in questo tipo di scuola. E' stato creato anche un questionario per insegnanti, che hanno a loro volta espresso il loro punto di vista su WSE, sul metodo e sull'impatto di questa scuola sugli studenti.
Infine, la conclusione si basa sulla descrizione e il commento di questi due tipi di questionario, unita alla diretta esperienza della candidata, impiegata in un centro Wall Street English come Personal Tutor.

La tesi affronta il tema della comunicazione interculturale in ambito commerciale ed i problemi che ne conseguono, da quelli linguistici a quelli dovuti al sistema valoriale delle persone e riguarda soprattutto chi è occupato nel settore terziario, in cui il lavoratore è a stretto contatto con il cliente. Nel primo capitolo è trattata la negoziazione interculturale: strategie comunicative, risoluzione di problemi e come gestire la negoziazione stessa con persone che hanno una percezione degli eventi diversa dalla nostra. Il secondo capitolo esamina la gestione del reclamo in chiave interculturale, cui tema principale è la grande differenza tra collettivisti ed individualisti durante una situazione di reclamo, la loro relazione con il proprio 'in-group' e 'out-group' e la gestione di situazioni tanto complicate quanto delicate che ogni giorno un lavoratore a contatto con queste due varianti culturali deve affrontare. Nell'ultimo capitolo si fa riferimento al modello Balboni - Caon sia per il modello di competenza linguistica sia per il modello di competenza linguistica interculturale e una rielaborazione di entrambi sul caso. Il capitolo è concluso da esempi su come gestire le varie situazioni con clienti di culture diversa dalla nostra.

This dissertation is aimed at presenting the translation of the book "La bambina, il pugile, il canguro", "The girl, the boxer and the kangaroo", by renowned Italian writer Gian Antonio Stella. The story deals with the deep, unconditional love of a grandfather for his little granddaughter who suffers from down syndrome. It is also a novel about prejudices and challenges of life due to the child’s condition.
The translating process involves making a choice between different options which may result more appropriate than others considering the TL. Supported by translation theories, this paper will illustrate and comment on translation strategies as well as choices adopted within the literary text. The overall commentary investigates the peculiarities specific to one language which do not have an equivalent in the other thus rendering the translation process extremely complicated. The primary focus has been to address such difficulties, namely cultural aspects, historical facts, the use of different dialects, Veneziano and Triestino, the presence of nursery rhymes as well as idiomatic expressions, and register. Syntax, tense, aspect and semantic extensions of both languages were also considered, with a view to discover to what extent Italian and English work differently. The final section of this study deals with conclusions and is aimed at providing useful guidelines for those approaching the translation practise.

Il tema della tesi è la facilitazione dell’apprendimento della lingua straniera, nel caso specifico della lingua inglese, attraverso lezioni di danza hip hop.
Questo argomento coinvolge le mie due grandi passioni: l’insegnamento della danza hip hop (posseggo due diplomi nazionali: C.S.E.N. e M.I.DA.S. entrambi riconosciuti dal C.O.N.I.), e la glottodidattica.
Attraverso lezioni sperimentali a partecipazione volontaria tenute presso il Liceo Linguistico “E. Montale” di San Donà di Piave con gli studenti del secondo anno, si è voluto mettere in pratica la tesi in questione, creando lezioni che unissero argomenti di lessico e grammatica inglese ad esercizi tipici delle lezioni di danza hip hop. Tali sperimentazioni sono state basate sugli studi compiuti durante la stesura della tesi.
La tesi è suddivisa in sei capitoli.
Il primo capitolo tratta delle neuroscienze: partendo dalla psicomotricità che pone l’accento sul connubio tra anima e corpo nel processo di apprendimento, passando alla PNL la Programmazione Neuro Linguistica, alle preferenze sensoriali dell’apprendimento, all’apprendimento esperienziale di Kolb, alla multisensorialità, alle teorie dell’embodiment, ai neuroni specchio, terminando con la memoria.
Il secondo capitolo tratta dell’emozioni nel processo di apprendimento. Dapprima cercando di darne una definizione, e successivamente riportando le teorie che negli anni hanno supportato l’importanza che le emozioni hanno negli studenti, per concludere con la teoria della valutazione dell’input di Schumann.
Il terzo capitolo tratta della motivazione, carburante e linfa del processo di apprendimento.
Il quarto capitolo tratta il tema della danza come elemento interculturale. Attraverso fonti antropologiche sulla danza si evidenzia come questa sia presente da sempre in tutte le culture.
Nel quinto capitolo ho inserito le programmazioni degli insegnanti della scuola superiore in cui ho sperimentato la tesi, e le indicazioni del Ministero con riferimento alla stessa classe.
Infine il sesto capitolo presenta una relazione della sperimentazione, suddivisa per ogni giornata, approfondendo i singoli momenti della lezione che viene costruita in quattro sezioni: il riscaldamento, lo studio dei passi e della tematica giornaliera di lessico e grammatica inglese, la creazione della coreografia, e un ultimo momento di fissazione dei contenuti tramite esercizi scritti.

The present dissertation is a case study on an Italo-Bengali 8-year-old girl with suspected Learning Disability and severe problems related to the Italian language, especially in comprehension. The research project provides a general assessment of the participant’s Italian language skills in comprehension and production through standardized and non-standardized language tests. It continues with a language intervention which uses both explicit an implicit instruction of complex sentences like reflexive clitics phrases, direct object clitic phrases and passive structures. The explicit instruction phase involves sentence manipulation activities focused on syntactic movements and activities using the TUF method (Treatment of Underlying Forms). The implicit instruction phase involves priming sessions of the mentioned complex structures. Finally, a post-intervention assessment is carried out. The first chapter is dedicated to a literature review on bilingualism and SLI. The second chapter discusses theoretical issues related to explicit instruction in complex structures and syntactic priming as implicit learning. The third chapter deals with the participant and the study. A final discussion follows, in which an interpretation of the collected data and a comparison with previous findings are provided.

This thesis presents and discusses the results of two experiments conducted to study the acceptability of Focus Adverb placement in English in two groups of English speakers. The two groups investigated were Italians holding an advanced or proficient level of English as a foreign language (EFL) and a group of native speakers (L1) of English, primarily from California. The first experiment was designed to explore the acceptability of grammatical and traditionally ungrammatical word orders in L1 English speakers using grammaticality judgement tasks featuring the Focus Adverbs only, even and also. The purpose of the second study was to investigate whether the EFL subjects behaved differently from L1 speakers when responding to the same grammaticality judgement tasks. This thesis also aims to propose strategies in order to implement more effective ways of teaching adverb placement to students of English. Teaching strategies will be discussed with hopes of perfecting Focus Adverb placement in order to help non-native speakers reach a near-nativelike level.

The following dissertation aims to analyse the contemporary author Jhumpa Lahiri. I will introduce a discussion to define an appropriate framework to place the author in the literary field. The first chapter opens the study moving through postcolonial narrative key concepts. The analysis moves to the South Asian Diaspora movement in its relevant historical facts, in its social assimilation in the United States and Canada, and in its effect as a literary trend. In the second chapter, supported by her biography, by articles and interviews, I analyse Lahiri’s memories and moments that influenced her perspective and career as a writer. I will focus the attention on her first novel The Namesake (2003), in comparison with its film adaptation by Mira Nahir. In the third chapter, I examine Bharati Mukherjee and her novel Desirable Daughters; the author’s personal events and her social role through her writings will be the centre of the comparison with Jhumpa Lahiri. Literary debate between the two women will be employed to analyse the protagonists’ introspection, the space of female characters in the “other” society and in the family context. A conclusive reflection of the thesis will try to prove how modalities of social codes adopted in the novels could have affect readers, specifically in Western and in South Asian worlds.

The main purpose of this work is to investigate the distribution of some determiners within the nominal expression in extreme southern Calabrian dialects. The dissertation will principally address the distribution of articles, zero determiner and demonstratives. The study aims to determine the environments in which these categories are licensed. It has been chosen to take into consideration only NPs in argument position and the research will focus particularly on the position of the determiners with respect to:
1. Proper names
2. Count singular nouns
3. Count plural nouns
4. Mass nouns
5. Kinship nouns
Sentences in (6-10) will provide some examples regarding the abovementioned categories in the variety to be investigated.

In order to achieve the aforementioned goal, a specific dialect has been chosen; that is to say Galati variety (RC). The data, collected through interviews with native speakers, have shown that definite articles may be interpreted in different ways with respect to their degree of definiteness. Throughout the work space will be given to the analysis of this phenomenon in comparison with the results obtained from the study of determinerless noun phrases. Moreover, a chapter of this dissertation will deal with the concept of partitivity. On such account evidence will be given that demonstratives are the sole determiners able to partially license the presence of partitive elements. Throughout the whole paper data will be analyzed in contrast with those of Standard Italian and of other Romance languages, with the exclusive purpose of better highlighting similarities and differences among the languages.

SuperReadingTM è un corso che mira ad aumentare la velocità nella lettura silente e a migliorarne la comprensione. Precedenti studi hanno mostrato miglioramenti globali, compresa una diminuzione del tempo di lettura e un aumento nelle percentuali di comprensione sia nei normolettori che nei lettori con dislessia.
La fonte esatta di questi miglioramenti è ancora sconosciuta: non è ancora chiaro se il miglioramento del processo di lettura sia conseguente al training globale del corso o a esercizi specifici in esso presente. L’obiettivo di questa tesi è quello di iniziare ad indagare più a fondo sulle cause del miglioramento esaminando gli effetti di una componente del programma di training – l’esercizio Eye-HopTM, che consiste nel saltare con il dito tra gruppi di parole grazie ad un particolare layout dei testi durante la lettura – sulla velocità e l’efficacia della lettura silente. Un training di cinque settimane focalizzato sull’eye-hopping è stato programmato per esaminare eventuali miglioramenti nella velocità della lettura silente in un gruppo di 18 studenti adulti.
I risultati hanno mostrato una diminuzione nel tempo di lettura per tutti i partecipanti (incluso il partecipante con dislessia) e un miglioramento nell’efficacia di lettura per i normolettori.

Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is considered an intermediate stage between normal cognitive aging and mild dementia. The National Institute of Aging and Alzheimer’s Association Workgroup has recognized MCI as a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other types of dementia.Fewer studies have analysed language production in MCI subjects. We explore this topic by examining the performance of participants with MCI on non-canonicalstructures which are known to be problematic in more advanced types of dementia.Although we expected an overall decrement in performance, we predicted that complex non-canonical structures with syntactic movement would be harder to be recalled verbatim and would induce sentence reformulations in patients with MCI than in aged matched controls.These predictions were confirmed.

This thesis used the syntactic priming paradigm to test the abstractness of children’s sentence representations in production. The experiment was modeled on Bencini and Valian’s (2008) priming study with 3-year-olds' and carried out with a group of Czech/English bilingual children aged from 3 to 5 years. During the experimental session, participants were asked to hear and repeat a prime sentence, either in the active or passive form, and then describe an unrelated target picture. The experiment found abstract priming of passives between sentences that shared only structure and differed in lexical content. In describing target pictures with inanimate participants, 11 children primed with passives significantly produced more passive sentences than did 11 children primed with actives. The findings would indicate that children represent syntactic forms at an abstract level, independent of particular lexical items. Accordingly, they provide support for continuity in language development.

La presente tesi intende indagare il ruolo delle variabili affettive nell'apprendimento dell'Inglese come lingua straniera, in particolare, la motivazione e l'ansia di apprendimento, di un campione di studenti universitari che hanno risposto spontaneamente ad un questionario online, condiviso sui gruppi chiusi di Facebook di varie facoltà universitarie di Ca' Foscari, Padova e Bologna.
Lo studio è articolato in due parti: il primo e il secondo capitolo presentano un quadro teorico sui concetti di base, mentre il terzo e il quarto capitolo esaminano lo studio di caso e la discussione dell'analisi dei dati sulla base di alcune variabili emerse dall'indagine. In particolare, il primo capitolo presenta una revisione letteraria sui concetti di emozioni, affetto e teorie delle emozioni. Il secondo capitolo analizza due variabili affettive: motivazione ed ansia di apprendimento, dai loro concetti in via di sviluppo alle loro teorie e implicazioni relative all'insegnamento. Il terzo capitolo introduce l'ambito, lo strumento dell'indagine e l'analisi dei dati. Il quarto capitolo analizza i dati da diverse prospettive come interessi culturali, attitudini, motivazione integrativa e strumentalità per la motivazione e, propensione a comunicare, relazione insegnante-studente e relazione studente-studente per l'ansia di apprendimento.

Insegnare le lingue nel 2019 è una sfida che l'attuale generazione di insegnanti sta tentando di affrontare per far fronte a un mondo costantemente dinamico e instabile. Una di queste risposte è CLIL, acronimo di Content Language Integrated Learning, un metodo che consiste nell'integrare l'apprendimento della lingua e del contenuto: insegnare il contenuto attraverso la lingua straniera e la lingua attraverso la materia in una relazione vincente per entrambe le parti.
Ho lavorato con alunni delle scuole primarie, secondarie e superiori nel contesto di un laboratorio didattico sull'educazione finanziaria e imprenditoriale chiamato UpGrade, fornito dall'organizzazione scientifica italiana chiamato Pleiadi. Il progetto UpGrade è in linea con le competenze di cittadinanza per l'apprendimento permanente fornite dal Consiglio dell'Unione Europea nel 2018, con la sola eccezione della competenza di saper comunicare in lingue straniere. Di conseguenza, ho deciso di indagare sulla possibilità di attuare il progetto in lingua inglese intervistando, tramite un questionario, gli insegnanti che già conoscono il progetto, per capire se c'è interesse da parte loro nel poter garantire un laboratorio completo di tutte le competenze chiave.
Questo studio si concentra su una possibile risposta alle sfide che le nuove generazioni di studenti dovranno affrontare, fornendo strumenti finanziari nel contesto CLIL, al fine di creare un' esperienza coinvolgente per tutti gli studenti.

The focus of this research is on the analysis of a number of traditional and CLIL textbooks, which can be used by Italian schools, to catch the differences and similarities between them. Although, the number of textbooks in Italian that we adopt for the analysis is limited since it only involves two books that are sold with the CLIL ones and two textbooks sold as stand-alone. We also wish to try and understand if CLIL methodology is properly applied in the Italian school materials that adopt this methodology. The conclusions we reach cannot be generalizable to all the Italian CLIL and traditional textbooks since the analysis takes into consideration a limited number of books. However, before analysing textbooks, in the theoretical framework, we discuss the Italian situation concerning the CLIL methodology and above all the elements that will be used in the analysis of textbooks. As concerns the analysis, we use a grid with several points to consider which are useful to identify the differences and similarities between course books.

L’elaborato mira a studiare lo sviluppo del celebre mito di Tristano e Isotta dalle sue antiche origini celtiche, alla sua ricezione nelle diverse tradizioni europee medievali.
Una particolare attenzione è riservata alla sua ricezione nel cosiddetto ramo cortese, il cui testo di riferimento fu redatto da Thomas of Brittany in anglo-normanno, il quale inspirò la produzione delle versioni in medio inglese, medio alto-tedesco e norreno.
Proprio la poco esplorata traduzione medio-inglese rappresenta il fulcro del mio studio, poiché tramite il confronto fra quest’ultima e il suo source text anglo-normanno emerge come ogni traduzione produca una versione differente di un testo arricchendolo di elementi propri per soddisfare il gusto del pubblico a cui sono rivolti.

La batteria di test BESA (Bilingual English-Spanish Assessment, Peña et al, 2018) da cui è tratto il subtest adattato, viene descritta in dettaglio. L’adattamento è infine comparato con altri test linguistici già reperibili dai logopedisti italiani.

I recenti fenomeni della globalizzazione e digitalizzazione hanno fatto proliferare la lingua inglese in ogni settore sociale del mondo e in molti paesi del pianeta. La lingua inglese, dopo essere proliferata nel mondo, è stata assimilata e appropriata da molti paesi e da molti sistemi linguistici sulla terra e questa rapida e pervasiva proliferazione linguistica ha portato alla nascita di un nuovo fenomeno linguistico: la comparsa di diversi ‘Inglesi del mondo’. In seguito, i parlati di diversi inglesi del mondo hanno iniziato ad usare l’inglese come una lingua franca e questo ha provocato molte sfide all’interno dell’insegnamento della lingua inglese, sia in Italia che nel resto del mondo, dove solo l’inglese standard sembra essere il punto di riferimento della didattica degli insegnanti. Per questo motivo un questionario di ricerca è stato indirizzato agli insegnanti di inglese delle scuole di primo e di secondo grado della Regione Veneto. La ricerca ha voluto scoprire se gli insegnanti siano consapevoli delle nuove sfide che l’insegnamento della lingua inglese deve affrontare oggi per quanto riguarda la comparsa di nuovi inglesi del mondo e di un inglese usato come lingua franca. La ricerca ha contribuito a creare una panoramica della situazione dell’insegnamento dell’ELF nelle classi italiane e a scoprire cosa gli insegnanti pensino dell’insegnamento dell’ELF e quali strategie adotterebbero in questi ambienti per permettere agli studenti di affrontare l’ELF nel loro futuro.

The purpose of the thesis is to investigate, through a cross-linguistic structural priming, bilinguals’ syntactic representation of the passive structure.
Although passive is considered a complex construction, and it is infrequently encountered in oral language, priming studies have shown that children develop an abstract representation of passive at a very young age (Bencini & Valian, 2008). This thesis aims to demonstrate that the bilinguals’ structural representation of the passive in the two languages is stored together within the bilingual memory.
In order to explore this issue, a cross-linguistic experiment was used to test production of active and passive transitive sentences. The experiment was conducted on adult Italian-English late bilinguals with intermediate to high English proficiency. Participants were presented first with two English sentence they had to read out loud, then with a picture that they were required to describe using an Italian sentence. Results show that between-languages priming of passives occurs, providing thus that syntactic representation of the passive structure is shared between similar structures across languages (Hartsuiker et al., 2004) in bilinguals with intermediate-high L2 proficiency.
This thesis also explores whether or not animacy manipulation has an effect on the priming of passive sentence, and it does so by inserting two different animacy conditions: transitive sentences containing inanimate agent and animate patient (InAn), and transitive sentences containing inanimate agent and patient (InIn). Results showed that there is a priming effect and that the priming of passive sentences is stronger in the InAn.

The purpose of our research is to identify what factors determine parents' decisions in relation to the linguistic development of their children in the context of multilingual families within the italian community in Brussels. Do they make conscious choices involving seeking information on bilingualism? As a preliminary step, it was necessary to define what is meant by bilingualism and multilingualism, and verify whether these terms are familiar to the average person. We thus paid particular attention to common or false assumptions related to this topic. We chose to focus our research on the Italian community residing in the city of Brussels, where the headquarters of the European Commission, the executive branch of the European Union (EU), are located. We set out to determine whether there are any public or private Institutions that provide information and support to families who find themselves making difficult decisions about linguistic and cultural matters. Such decisions inevitably have very important repercussions in terms of their children's culture and sense of identity. Given that such Institutions exist, how do they interact with the families? To answer these questions about the Italian community in Brussels, we created and distributed a Questionnaire to a sample of families with bilingual children and/or teenagers at least one of whose parents was an Italian citizen. The questions included establishing the background of the family (origin, age, level of schooling) and the strategies devised by the parents for the language education of their children. We also tried to ascertain whether the families felt that they were adequately supported by the Institutions and if so, how. We have therefore collected data and formulated conclusions on the real situation of families and the need for the Institutions to provide more support to them as part of a policy for promoting the Italian language and culture abroad.

Il tema principale di questa tesi è la traduzione e l'analisi della stessa. L'opera scelta per questo lavoro è una raccolta di racconti scritti dall'autore Niccolò Ammaniti, uno scrittore noto nel panorama letterario italiano contemporaneo. Le storie scelte sono quattro, divise in due sottogruppi: il primo è costituito da una sola storia, il secondo include le altre tre. Il primo racconto narra delle disavventure di un ragazzo romano il quale si trova alle prese con una Roma vista come covo di degrado e criminalità, il tutto narrato usando un tono comico. Il secondo sottogruppo, invece, è formato da racconti che a loro volta fanno parte di una collezione nella collezione all'interno del libro, intitolata "Rane e girini". I protagonisti di queste storie sono anch'essi giovanni ragazzi di Roma, ma qui li vediamo alle prese con il rapporto genitori-figli e con il difficile processo di crescita proprio della giovane età, scoprendo quindi sia la loro vita quotidiana, sia i loro pensieri e i loro problemi.
Successivamente alla parte di traduzione, vi è una sezione dedicata all'analisi parola per parola del lavoro. Qui sarà presente una lista di note che documenteranno il processo che avviene nella mente di un traduttore, esponendo sia le difficoltà relative al lato più tecnico della traduzione, sia al lato più letterario e simbolico proprio delle storie e dei personaggi.

Through the analysis of the student’s personal characteristics, of the teacher’s skills and of knowledge they should possess in order to carry out an effective teaching activity as well as of the role that technology plays today in the teaching-learning process, we will try to understand how students and teachers act during the English language learning-teaching process.
The data taken from middle school class observation will be analysed and compared with a questionnaire submitted to the students in order to understand their perception and the value they give to the English language. In addition, the study case will allow to understand whether current teaching methods are effective or not and, if not, how the system could be improved to suit the needs of each individual student in a constantly evolving society like ours.

Food is an important part of human cultural expression, and recipes are a way of transmitting the knowledge on its preparation. This dissertation consists in the translation from English into Italian of a sample of recipes belonging to the British and Italian cultural areas and to a mixed “Anglo-Italian” area. The focus is on the rendition and acceptability, for an Italian public, of the cultural elements of the recipes originally thought for a British public . First, the work provides some considerations on the relationship between food and culture. Then, the characteristics of the genre “recipe” are exposed, and useful aspects of translation theory are presented. The recipes included in the dissertation are then translated and each one is presented with a commentary which focusses mainly on their cultural aspects. In conclusion, it is possible to observe that the main problems relate to units of measurement, ingredients’ availability and the need to substitute them or explain their characteristics, implicit traditions in the source culture that need to be explained in the target culture, how Italian recipes and references are treated by the British which need a “re-Italianization” process when presented to the Italian culture, and the need to render the critiques moved to Italian cuisine more acceptable for an Italian public especially in those contexts where they cannot be eliminated.

Lo scopo di questa tesi è quello di fornire una proposta di traduzione dall'inglese all'italiano del libro Venice: Four Seasons of Home Cooking, scritto da Russell Norman e pubblicato da Penguin UK nel 2018. Questo libro di cucina presenta molti piatti stagionali veneziani e narra storie legate al tempo che l'autore ha trascorso a Venezia e alle esperienze che egli stesso ha vissuto in questa città.
La scelta del libro non è stata casuale: questo libro di cucina è stato scelto in quanto non mostra semplicemente i piatti tipici della cucina veneziana, ma mette in risalto la cultura e le tradizioni della regione. La tesi è divisa in quattro capitoli: nel primo vengono fatte alcune considerazioni sul rapporto culinario interculturale tra Italia e Regno Unito, e sui rispettivi panorami editoriali, e si osserva come la cultura influenzi il processo di traduzione. Nel secondo capitolo vengono introdotti l'autore e il libro e si analizza il testo di partenza dal punto di vista lessicale, morfosintattico e stilistico. Nel terzo capitolo, viene presentata una proposta di traduzione dell'introduzione di tutti i capitoli e di alcune ricette. L'ultimo capitolo commenta il lavoro di traduzione realizzato, analizzando i problemi lessicali, morfosintattici e stilistici incontrati durante la traduzione, mostrando come sono stati risolti e indicando la strategia di traduzione utilizzata.

Modifications made to the English language and the introduction of various anglicisms into the Italian language, both created as byproducts of the Covid-19 pandemic, are the central topics of this dissertation. Changes made to a language are consequences of political, social/cultural, economical, and technological events. Because pandemics can be considered one of any of these event types, they do have a history of creating changes to languages. Some examples of this modification phenomenon include the Black Death, Spanish flu, and, presently, Covid-19.
Modifications made to the English language, including those that happened during Covid-19, are tracked by authoritative English sources such as the Oxford English Dictionary (British-English Dictionary) and the Merriam Webster Dictionary (American Dictionary) with their different methodologies, as well as unofficial sources such as the Urban Dictionary.
The impact of Covid-19 on the English language has spread to other languages such as Italian, in which the pandemic’s anglicisms are highly prevalent, especially in informative sources. The importance of these English terms being used in the Italian language triggered speculation in linguists and common people alike regarding the role of English during the pandemic. The conservative position toward pandemic-age anglicisms held by the linguistic institution known as the “Accademia della Crusca” will be analysed, as will the results of a dissertation survey conducted among Italians which focused upon the role of anglicisms as permanent modifications to the Italian language coupled with the presence of English words as a factor that influenced Italian knowledge about Covid-19.

The following thesis states the importance of high quality translation, and the ability of the translator to express the author’s intention in the literary field.
The first chapter will focus on the background of translation studies theories, providing a definition of what a translation is and what are the main tasks of the translator based on the studies by Walter Benjamin in ‘The Task of the Translator’. Furthermore, the focus will be on the translation into the second language with its acquisition theory and models.
The second chapter will focus on an interview with an English author and its translator in order to discuss the development of a translation, in this case a novel translated into Italian and German, by a professional translator in the literature field.
The third chapter will analyze the previous, highlighting the theories and strategies the translator uses in order to maintain the original theme and idea of the novel, especially concerning the English-Italian aspects.
To conclude, the thesis will summarize the main features and issues of the translating activity and its originality following the ‘new’ text achieved.

Il plurilinguismo è oggi un termine chiave nel panorama internazionale, inteso sia come approccio pedagogico che punta allo sviluppo di una competenza plurilingue e pluriculturale, sia come strumento che aiuta a coltivare una apertura nei confronti dell’educazione linguistica e una equa valorizzazione delle diversità culturali e linguistiche. Dopo aver illustrato le caratteristiche del plurilinguismo, questa tesi si concentra nell’analizzare i numerosi documenti europei ed italiani in cui si menziona la necessità di diffondere il plurilinguismo e le relative pratiche didattiche, soprattutto a livello scolastico. Attraverso il confronto con la situazione attuale a livello nazionale ed europeo, la tesi mostra l’esistenza di un gap consistente che divide la teoria dalla pratica, un divario che separa i buoni propositi e le indicazioni dei documenti da quello che realmente accade nelle varie realtà scolastiche. Questa netta separazione viene confermata anche da alcune docenti italiane della scuola primaria che hanno preso parte ad una intervista in cui si è discusso della conoscenza del tema, delle loro opinioni e di quello che viene o meno fatto nelle loro classi per promuovere il plurilinguismo. Per concludere, come possibile soluzione pratica viene presentato il translanguaging, un nuovo approccio didattico che può rappresentare un primo passo verso la creazione di uno spazio multilingue all’interno delle classi italiane in rispetto delle linee guida europee e nazionali.

La presente tesi è stata stesa a quattro mani dalla scrivente Marila Zardetto insieme alla collega Elisa Bressan, entrambe interpreti di Lingua dei Segni Italiana (LIS) e insegnanti presso la scuola primaria.
La prima parte dell’elaborato descrive il processo comunicativo, la facoltà del linguaggio e la sordità dal punto di vista clinico, culturale e sociale, per presentare poi la LIS come lingua e nel suo impiego a livello educativo e terapeutico.
Dopo la panoramica teorica iniziale, la tesi si propone di presentare il progetto “SensibiLIS” ideato dalle autrici, in collaborazione con l’illustratrice Elena Antonutti, e sviluppato come percorso di sensibilizzazione alla disabilità sensoriale uditiva e alla LIS. L’obiettivo è quello di offrire uno strumento di apprendimento per bambini, facilmente fruibile da tutti e utilizzabile in famiglia, a scuola o in ambito riabilitativo.
Il progetto “SensibiLIS” si compone di un albo illustrato dal titolo “Alcune onde più in là”, corredato da un quaderno operativo con attività di sensibilizzazione, schede operative e risorse video realizzati per consolidare un vocabolario LIS di base, in un ambiente di apprendimento partecipativo, giocoso e cooperativo.

Fulcro di questa tesi è il progetto “SensibiLIS”, ideato dalle autrici Bressan e Zardetto con l’obiettivo di creare un percorso di sensibilizzazione alla sordità e alla Lingua dei Segni Italiana (LIS) a partire dall’albo illustrato “Alcune onde più in là”.
La tesi è stata redatta a quattro mani dalle autrici del progetto e consta di cinque capitoli, tre dei quali più teorici e due più pratici in quanto delineano l’articolazione del progetto e delle attività.
Inizialmente, viene affrontata la tematica generale della comunicazione e dell’acquisizione del linguaggio per passare poi al secondo capitolo in cui ci si inizia ad avvicinare al cuore del progetto. In questo capitolo il focus è posto infatti sulla sordità e le lingue dei segni. Il terzo capitolo è quello che fa da spartiacque tra la parte teorica e quella più operativa dell’elaborato, esso tratta infatti dei vari ambiti e/o contesti in cui la lingua dei segni può essere utilizzata. Nel capitolo quattro si racconta la concettualizzazione e la metodologia alla base del progetto SensibiLIS: qui si trova anche la storia “Alcune onde più in là” ed una proposta di racconto della stessa. L’ultimo capitolo contiene invece tutte le schede delle varie attività raccolte all’interno di un quaderno operativo facile da usare e stampare.

The rise of pro-anorexia communities is a peculiar new phenomenon which has been observed on most social media platforms since their onset in the early 2000s. Pro-anorexia communities are digital niches which function as safe spaces for individuals suffering from anorexia nervosa, who are otherwise exposed to widespread stigmatisation in their daily lives due to their condition. Since the beginning of the pro-anorexia phenomenon, countless communities of anorexic individuals have formed on different social media platforms, each characterised by its own unique features. The present work provides a detailed account of the main discursive characteristics of the pro-anorexia community on Tumblr. Over the course of a month, all 1,228 textposts in English published on this social network under the pro-anorexia hashtag were compiled into a corpus. The characteristics of the aforementioned collection of naturally occurring language were subsequently analysed by means of an array of Corpus Linguistics tools, thus providing a quantitative overview of the language used by pro-anorexia bloggers on Tumblr. A sample of 34 textposts was further examined by relying on Critical Discourse Analysis techniques. Numerous recurring discursive patterns were identified throughout this research, primarily revolving around the thematic areas of food, physical appearance, outgroup individuals, and ingroup relationships. Both the most frequent and the most salient linguistic items pertaining to these topics were thus identified and further analysed with reference to their collocational profile within the corpus. This work documents the linguistic strategies through which anorexic individuals partake in discourse within the Tumblr pro-anorexia community in order to collectively conceptualise and give sense to their daily experiences with the eating disorder, thus challenging the historically consolidated characterisation of anorexia nervosa as an exclusively individual and isolating psychopathology.
