Si l’œuvre de Caillois est d’une extraordinaire diversité, elle trouve également son unité dans une interrogation répétée des limites : non pas être ou ne pas être mais en être et / ou n’en être pas. Comment situer l’ensemble des réalités du monde - objets, êtres vivants, institutions, etc. - entre le dedans et le dehors des différents ensembles auxquels on est tenté de les rattacher ? L’auteur reprend de livre en livre les deux questions symétriques du dedans et du dehors et il se met en demeure d’établir de nettes distinctions lui permettant de définir sa propre position de sujet et, plus largement, l’avenir de l’individu, de la société et de la civilisation. Cet article s’efforcera de saisir l’entreprise de délimitation à laquelle se livre Caillois au fil de trois étapes sociologique, historique et anthropologique concernant l’être humain et ses cercles d’appartenance les plus couramment envisagés.

I. Les mécanismes de défense sont dans la règle des témoins du fonctionnement mental individuel. S’ils apparaissent chez la majorité des membres d’un groupe à un moment donné, ils permettent le mieux l’interprétation de groupe tant prônée. 2. Dans la phase de perforation des interprétations individuelles des mécanismes de défense sont licites et mêmes indiquées dans certaines conditions. 3. Certains mécanismes archaïques (le clivage et le déni, par exemple) se rapprochent beaucoup des processus groupaux. Si on les considère comme des défenses, il faudra recourir à l’interprétation et si on estime qu’il s’agit d’un processus groupal, il faudra le traiter comme tel. 4. Le processus groupal n’appartient pas à la sphère de la pulsion et du conflit, mais à celle des besoins de sécurité, de plénitude, de destruction et de mort. 5. Il sert avant tout à créer le groupe et à assurer son fonctionnement au service du principe du plaisir. Il peut donc devenir sous ces deux aspects une résistance au processus psychodynamique. 6. En conséquence, il ne devrait se développer que pour maintenir l’existence du groupe et non pas comme une fin en elle-même. 7. Certains éléments du processus groupal peuvent devenir des défenses interprétables. 8. Ce mélange entre défenses et processus groupaux parle davantage pour l'existence d'un continuum que pour celle de deux catégories conceptuelles possédant des limites nettes.

As a new radar system with improved performance, distributed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar provides a new idea for the development of netted radar. Aiming at the limited resource allocation problem of netted radar, this paper extends the idea of distributed MIMO radar to netted radar and proposes a resource scheduling algorithm for multitarget imaging in distributed netted radar based on the maximum scheduling benefits. Under the condition of the cognition of the target characteristics, the algorithm comprehensively considers the angle and dwell time to complete the multiradar and multitarget matching. Then it uses the principle of compressed sensing to calculate the pulse resources required for sparse imaging of each target on the corresponding radar. In this paper, the scheduling benefit of a radar system is expressed by weighting the three factors of the scheduling success rate, the hit value rate and the pulse resource consumption rate. The resource scheduling model is established according to the maximum scheduling benefits and solved using a heuristic algorithm. The simulation results show that compared with the traditional algorithm, this method improves the scheduling benefits of the radar system.

Abstract:Cycads in the Zamiaceae are well known for their host-specific insect pollination mutualisms. Pollination of Cycas in the sister family Cycadaceae is less well-documented, with beetle pollination possibly coexisting with a limited potential for wind pollination, a hypothesis we tested for C. ophiolitica in Central Queensland, Australia. Cones were associated with three species of beetle: an undescribed weevil (Curculionidae), Hapalips sp. (Erotylidae) and Ulomoides sp. (Tenebrionidae). Pollination-vector exclusion experiments compared the pollination success (quantified as % ovules pollinated per cone) of control cones against bagged or netted cones that excluded wind or insects respectively (n = 10 for all treatments). Insects do pollinate C. ophiolitica in the absence of wind, the median (first quartile-third quartile) pollination success of control plants being 83.7% (60.8–87.2%) while bagged cones, from which wind, but not insects, were excluded, pollinated at 52.9% (19.5–74.8%). For netted cones, (excluding insects but not wind), pollination fell to 12.6% (10.9–45.9%). Airborne pollen (as quantified by capture on a series of adhesive pollen traps) decreased rapidly with distance from male cones, potentially becoming ineffective for wind pollination at ~5 m. Airborne pollen load in the vicinity of female cones, and distance of females from neighbouring males, suggests wind pollination may occur sporadically, but only at high spatial densities. Although Cycas appears to be primarily insect pollinated, this limited potential for ambophily may be significant given the history of dispersal and pollinator host shifts among these cycads.

L’Allemagne a une expérience de la compensation relativement ancienne puisque cette dernière est introduite dès 1976 dans la démarche de non-perte nette de biodiversité de la loi fédérale sur la protection de la nature (Gesetz über Naturschutz und Landschaftspflege). Malgré cela, le système allemand de la compensation est encore largement méconnu hors d’Allemagne, car peu étudié dans la littérature internationale. À partir d’entretiens et d’une revue de littérature germanophone et anglophone, les auteures présentent les spécificités du système allemand, à l’échelle fédérale et du Bade-Wurtemberg, à travers les questions suivantes : Quels sont les facteurs expliquant le cadre législatif actuel de la compensation ? Existe-t-il des décalages entre les obligations législatives et la mise en oeuvre sur le terrain ? Quelle est la contribution de la compensation écologique à l’objectif de non-perte nette de biodiversité ? Les auteures mettent ainsi en avant les atouts et les limites du système, notamment du point de vue de la planification.

Cet article étudie comment le recours à l’animalisation dans Les Mohicans de Paris d’Alexandre Dumas est l’espace d’une véritable réflexion sur les rapports entre l’humain et l’animal. Ceci apparaît de façon nette dans la fictionnalisation du chien qui induit un brouillage des limites séparant humain et animal, brouillage qui a pour fonction de permettre l’articulation des personnages canins aux enjeux fondamentaux du roman. De façon plus précise, la mise en scène du « meilleur ami de l’homme » sert à redoubler le projet politique au cœur des Mohicans de Paris. This paper examines how, in Les Mohicans de Paris, Alexandre Dumas assigns animalistic features to some characters to question the relations between humans and animals while portraying the various dogs in the novel in a way which blurs the limits between humans and animals. These seemingly accessory canine characters are actually closely associated with the fundamental elements of the novel. More precisely, the way “man’s best friend” is put in fiction actually repeats the political project at the heart of Les Mohicans de Paris.

Abstract We conducted a gear comparison study to determine the best fish-sampling methodology in shoal habitat to assist with the development of a long-term fish community monitoring program on the Chipola River, Florida. Shoal habitat occurs throughout the southeastern United States, is shallow (< 1 m), and contains rock substrate and outcroppings, which limits boat electrofishing to the habitat margins. We compared the relative effectiveness of an electric seine and backpack electrofishers. Twenty-five randomly selected sites (4 m wide by 5 m long) per gear type were block netted and sampled across four shoals from August 28 to October 3, 2014. Habitat variables were recorded for each site. Using backpack electrofishers, 1,155 fish representing 21 species were collected. Using the electric seine, 1,036 fish representing 22 species were collected. We found no significant differences between gear types in mean total catch per site, mean species richness per site, Shannon's diversity, Simpson's dominance, Pielou's evenness, or the rate of species accumulation. Therefore, we consider the two gear types to be equally effective for block-netted sites in large river shoals. Differences in available equipment, funding, and personnel were compared and may ultimately determine which gear type is used in future studies.

216 Background: Gut neuroendocrine tumors (NETs or “carcinoids”) are difficult to manage since they present with advanced disease and limited treatment options are available. Imaging is relatively insensitive in identifying treatment efficacy and the current biomarker, a neurosecretory peptide, Chromogranin A (CgA), has limited value. There is a lack of specific blood biomarker tests both to detect tumors and measure treatment responsiveness. We report the utility of a 51 marker peripheral blood signature (NETest) in comparison to CgA. Methods: The signature was validated using a 2-step qPCR method for detecting NETs in two sets (n=115; n=120) and for measuring treatment responses in a third set (n=133, including complete remission: n=4, clinically stable disease: n=82 and non-responders/clinically progressive disease: n=47). Comparison with CgA (DAKO-ELISA) was undertaken. The confounding effects of PPIs, age, sex and race were also determined for the PCR test. Results: The PCR NETest detected NETs with high sensitivity (85-98%) and specificity (93-97%). It identified pancreatic and gastrointestinal NETs with similar efficacy (>85%) as well as metastatic and non-metastatic lesions. NETest score was significantly reduced (p<0.004) following surgery or RFA and significantly higher in clinically progressive disease compared to stable disease (5.8±0.3 versus 0.6±0.1, p<0.002). The performance metrics for differentiating stable and progressive disease were sensitivity: 91% and specificity: 91%. The score was robust (reproducibility: Coefficient of Variation<2%).Long-term PPI use (>1yr), did not alter the NETest values, neither did age, sex or ethnicity. The PCR score was significantly (p<0.0005) more accurate than CgA for identifying NETs and was elevated in 91% of NETs when CgA was normal. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that a multi (51)-gene NET panel is both sensitive and specific for detecting NETs and is capable of differentiating clinically stable from progressive disease. The test is robust and significantly more sensitive and specific (accurate) than CgA. The NETest thus facilitates both accurate disease detection, and disease progress thereby permitting assessment of treatment efficacy.

Utilisant la programmation logique par contrainte, l'objectif de cette thèse est de développer plusieurs techniques d'acquisition de contraintes pour les situations où nous disposons de données sans erreur. De telles situations rendent la majorité des techniques de ML inutilisables et de nouvelles approches sont nécessaires. Les techniques d'acquisition de contraintes proposées sont appliquées à deux cas d'utilisation : la recherche de nouvelles conjectures de limites fortes pour huit objets combinatoires et l'acquisition de contraintes à partir d'un calendrier de production à court terme unique et valide. Les contributions de la thèse comprennent (i) un modèle de contrainte pour acquérir des expressions booléennes-arithmétiques à partir de données, (ii) une base de données générée automatiquement de contraintes anti-réécriture qui empêchent la génération d'équations booléennes-arithmétiques simplifiables, (iii) un certain nombre de techniques de synthèse de formules qui peuvent acquérir une formule unique combinant plusieurs biais d'apprentissage, (iv) l'acquisition d'une variété de contraintes d'ordonnancement telles que les contraintes temporelles, de ressources, de calendrier et d'équipes, et dans ce dernier cas (v) la génération d'un modèle d'ordonnancement MiniZinc
Using constraint logic programming, the goal of this thesis is to develop several constraint acquisition techniques for the situations where we have error-free data. Such situations render majority of ML techniques unusable and new approaches are required. The proposed constraint acquisition techniques are applied for two use cases: search for new sharp bounds conjectures for eight combinatorial objects and the constraint acquisition from a single valid short-term production schedule. The contributions of the thesis include (i) a constraint model to acquire Boolean-arithmetic expressions from data, (ii) an automatically generated database of anti-rewriting constraints that prevent the generation of simplifiable Boolean-arithmetic equations, (iii) a number of formulae synthesis techniques which can acquire a single formula combining several learning biases, (iv) the acquisition of a variety of scheduling constraints such as temporal, resource, calendar and shift constraints, and in this later case (v) the generation of a MiniZinc scheduling model

This thesis deals with CT data segmentation using convolutional neural nets and describes the problem of training with limited training sets. User interaction is suggested as means of improving segmentation quality for the models trained on small training sets and the possibility of using transfer learning is also considered. All of the chosen methods help improve the segmentation quality in comparison with the baseline method, which is the use of automatic data specific segmentation model. The segmentation has improved by tens of percents in Dice score when trained with very small datasets. These methods can be used, for example, to simplify the creation of a new segmentation dataset.

Reachability analysis is key to the solutions of a variety of Petri net problems including liveness, fairness, controllability, model checking and more. Among various analytical techniques of Petri nets, we feel that the approach based on formal methods is most suitable for flexible manufacturing systems. Model checking is an automatic technique for verifying that a behavior holds for a model of a system. Using the concept of model checking, it becomes feasible to describe and solve many interesting problems in practice. In the thesis, we first investigate augmented marked graphs. Augmented marked graphs (AMGs) can be thought of as extensions of marked graphs that allow resource sharing. It has been shown that AMGs are useful for modeling and analyzing certain types of flexible manufacturing systems. To our knowledge, the techniques developed for analyzing AMGs are mostly based upon checking certain Petri net structures such as siphons. This thesis exploits the integer linear programming approach for the analysis of a subclass of AMGs called decomposable AMGs. We show that reachability between two configurations of a decomposable AMG can be equated with solving an instance of integer linear programming. We further extend our technique to model checking a type of branching time temporal logics and a type of linear time temporal logics. Examples arisen in flexible manufacturing systems are used to demonstrate the application of our technique. Next, we study that the reachability issue of various Petri nets with limited communication capabilities. It is known that the reachability problem for communication-free Petri nets is NP-complete. Lacking the synchronization mechanism, the expressive power of communication-free Petri nets is somewhat limited. It is therefore important and interesting to see whether the power of communication-free Petri nets can be enhanced without sacrificing their analytical capabilities. As a first step towards this line of research, our main concern is to investigate, from the decidability/complexity viewpoint, the reachability problem for a number of variants of communication-free Petri nets, including communication-free Petri nets augmented with ‘static priorities,’‘dynamic priorities,’ ‘states’ ‘inhibitor arcs,’ and ‘timing constraints’. For most of the augmented communication-free Petri nets, the reachability problem becomes undecidable for stateextended communication-free Petri nets augmented with priority or inhibitor arcs. For the basic model of communication-free Petri nets, the reachability problem is also undecidable if a dynamic priority relation is imposed on transition firing.

The introduction to the volume surveys the emergence, diffusion, limits, merits, and politics of social investment as an ‘emerging’ welfare policy paradigm for the knowledge-based economy. After revisiting its intellectual roots, the chapter surveys the criticisms that are levelled against the social investment perspective in the academic literature. Provoked by critics, and also the growing evidence of social investment headway and theoretical progress, the chapter subsequently develops a multidimensional life-course taxonomy of three complementary social investment functions: (1) easing the ‘flow’ of contemporary labour-market and life-course transitions; (2) raising the quality of the ‘stock’ of human capital and capabilities; and (3) maintaining strong minimum-income universal safety nets as income protection and economic stabilization ‘buffers’, as a heuristic template for analysing the interdependent character of social investment policy reform through the lens of the life-course contingencies of the knowledge economy and modern family demography.

La tematica del consenso dell’avente diritto viene affrontata con particolare riferimento al fondamento, alla collocazione sistematica e ai limiti di efficacia di questo istituto, attraverso un percorso che coinvolge profili di diritto costituzionale, di filosofia morale e di criminologia, oltre, che, naturalmente, più prettamente penalistici. Il riconoscimento di una rilevanza alla volontà della vittima nell’ambito dell’ordinamento penale non è un dato di immediata evidenza, essendo il diritto penale ramo del diritto pubblico caratterizzato da un rapporto di subordinazione del singolo allo Stato; ciononostante il consenso ha sempre avuto un ruolo nella determinazione della responsabilità penale. Negli attuali ordinamenti democratici, soprattutto con l’entrata in vigore delle Costituzioni repubblicane, si riscontra una tendenza ad una sempre maggiore valorizzazione della libertà di autodeterminazione del soggetto in relazione alla gestione dei propri beni e/o diritti. Affrontare la questione del fondamento del consenso dell’avente diritto e della sua efficacia nell’ambito del diritto penale significa interrogarsi sul fondamento e sui limiti del diritto di autodeterminazione, essenza del consenso stesso. Poter individuare un fondamento costituzionale del diritto di autodeterminazione significa, oggi, garantire la massima estensione al consenso dell’avente diritto. È in questa ottica che si snoda il percorso di approfondimento seguito dall’autrice, al fine di ampliare l’alveo dei diritti disponibili, con un rifiuto netto del principio del c.d. paternalismo (forte) quale criterio di legittimazione dell’intervento penale e negazione, dunque, della legittimità di una tutela (penale) dell’individuo "da se stesso". Silvia Tordini Cagli è attualmente ricercatore di Diritto penale presso la Facoltà di Giurisprudenza dell’Università degli Studi di Bologna. AbstractThere is growing concern regarding the extent and impact of marine litter waste. One particularly troublesome ocean waste fraction consists of abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear, including fishing nets. The relentless increase of marine litter is particularly pertinent to countries of Northern Europe and the Arctic region, which currently have limited business opportunities and associated supply chains capable of recycling or reusing this material. In this chapter, we outline the difficulties and opportunities in establishing a circular economy for fishing nets in Northern Europe and the Arctic, with a focus on experience and successful practices established through transnational and collaborative projects.

AbstractTrace properties, which are sets of execution traces, are often used to analyze systems, but their expressiveness is limited. Clarkson and Schneider defined hyperproperties as a generalization of trace properties to sets of sets of traces. Typical applications of hyperproperties are found in information flow security. We introduce an analogous definition of concurrent hyperproperties, by generalizing traces to concurrent traces, which we define as partially ordered multisets. We take Petri nets as the basic semantic model. Concurrent traces are formalized via causal nets. To check concurrent hyperproperties, we define may and must testing of sets of concurrent traces in the style of DeNicola and Hennessy, using the parallel composition of Petri nets. In our approach, we thus distinguish nondeterministic and concurrent behavior. We discuss examples where concurrent hyperproperties are needed.

AbstractA building spatial design (BSD) determines external and internal walls and ceilings of a building. The design space has a hierarchical structure, in which decisions on the existence or non-existence of spatial components determine the existence of variables related to these spaces, such as sizing and angles. In the optimization of BSDs it is envisioned to optimize various performance indicators from multiple disciplines in concert, such as structural, functional, thermal, and daylight performance. Existing representations of design spaces suffer from severe limitations, such as only representing orthogonal designs or representing the structures in parametric superstructure, allowing only for limited design variations. This paper proposes prism nets - a new way of representing the search space of BSDs based on triangulations defining space filling collections of triangular prisms that can be combined via coloring parameters to spaces. Prism nets can accommodate for non-orthogonal designs and are flexible in terms of topological variations. We follow the guidelines for representation and operator design proposed in the framework of metric-based evolutionary algorithms. The main contribution of the paper is a detailed discussion of the search space representation and corresponding mutation operators. Moreover, a proof of concept example demonstrates the integration into multi-objective evolutionary algorithms and provides first results on a simple, but reproducible, benchmark problem.

AbstractBeginning as a war-time food ration in the colonial era and going on to become India’s principal instrument to fight against hunger, PDS has emerged as India’s largest and arguably the most contentious social welfare program in the country. Having undergone multiple reforms in program delivery and design, the ‘new style’ PDS is finally beginning to deliver tangible benefits in terms of reducing latent hunger, food insecurity, and improved diet diversity. Yet, there is an intensified debate around replacing food transfers with cash transfers because PDS value chain relies upon an interlocked producer–consumer incentive structure which inhibits innovation in program design and therefore potentially limits its effectiveness in improving nutritional security. In this chapter, we argue that key to innovation in PDS is to reframe the food transfer debate as an issue of nutritional security. Improved nutrition as the scope of PDS might allow for greater deliberations upon the composition basket of the PDS, whether (and when) replacing it with cash transfers would be a feasible one.

AbstractWe consider the model of history-deterministic one-counter nets (OCNs). History-determinism is a property of transition systems that allows for a limited kind of non-determinism which can be resolved ‘on-the-fly’. Token games, which have been used to characterise history-determinism over various models, also characterise history-determinism over OCNs. By reducing 1-token games to simulation games, we are able to show that checking for history-determinism of OCNs is decidable. Moreover, we prove that this problem is $$\textbf{PSPACE}$$ PSPACE -complete for a unary encoding of transitions, and $$\textbf{EXPSPACE}$$ EXPSPACE -complete for a binary encoding and undecidable for one-counter automata (OCA), which are OCNs that can test for zeroes.We then study the language properties of history-deterministic OCNs. We show that the resolvers of non-determinism for history-deterministic OCNs are eventually periodic. As a consequence, for a given history-deterministic OCN, we construct a language equivalent deterministic OCA. We also show the decidability of comparing languages of history-deterministic OCNs, such as language inclusion and language universality.

AbstractFormal labour and affiliation to Ecuador’s social security system is the main gateway for access to social protection benefits, especially in the case of migrants. However, a large informal labour market and low levels on inclusion in the social security system forces large sectors of society to rely on family and community arrangements for the management of risk and economic uncertainty. The state provides some non-contributory benefits through cash transfer programs but, with the exception of health care, these only cover people living in conditions of extreme poverty. Universal, non-means tested programs are limited to the public health and education systems. Overall, migrants face several obstacles to access social protection benefits. Gaining the right to work legally is mostly reserved for white-collar and highly educated immigrants, excluding impoverished immigrants. Paired to the inability to access labour-related benefits and government programs for the so-called poor, immigrants lack the safety nets provided by extended family and a community setting. Nationals residing abroad have restricted access to social benefits, having access only to the contributory pension system on a voluntary basis. This chapter discusses the social protection system in Ecuador and focuses on eligibility criteria to show the extent of migrants’ access to the social benefits.

AbstractCoverability in Petri nets finds applications in verification of safety properties of reactive systems. We study coverability in the equivalent model: Vector Addition Systems with States (VASS).A k-VASS can be seen as k counters and a finite automaton whose transitions are labelled with k integers. Counter values are updated by adding the respective transition labels. A configuration in this system consists of a state and k counter values. Importantly, the counters are never allowed to take negative values. The coverability problem asks whether one can traverse the k-VASS from the initial configuration to a configuration with at least the counter values of the target.In a well-established line of work on k-VASS, coverability in 2-VASS is already -hard when the integer updates are encoded in binary. This lower bound limits the practicality of applications, so it is natural to focus on restrictions. In this paper we initiate the study of 2-VASS with one unary counter. Here, one counter receives binary encoded updates and the other receives unary encoded updates. Our main result is that coverability in 2-VASS with one unary counter is in . This improves upon the inherited state-of-the-art upper bound. Our main technical contribution is that one only needs to consider runs in a certain compressed linear form.

AbstractAll countries have a rising burden of diet-related disease from the consumption of unhealthy foods. About three billion people around the world cannot afford the diverse foods needed for a healthy diet. This chapter aims to extend previous work on diet cost and affordability to address the hidden costs of meal preparation inside the home. Costs of a basic meal based on market prices for the most affordable items are estimated in 168 countries. Also, the hidden costs of meal preparation are considered, taking account of environmental or social externalities from the production and distribution of food, as well as the health externalities involved in food consumption. The data shown here reveal that even the simple raw ingredients for a basic plate are often unaffordable for the poorest, and the added cost of time and fuel can make such meals prohibitively expensive. Results suggest two main avenues for policy action. First, governments should use the information on the least costly way to meet dietary standards to inform poverty lines and provide targeted assistance so as to ensure that citizens can acquire safe and nutritious items in sufficient quantities for an active and healthy life, using locale-appropriate safety nets. Second, food policies should recognize the hidden costs of meal preparation that often put healthier, more sustainable diets out of reach. Overcoming the hidden barriers to preparation of healthy meals will require support for helpful forms of food processing that preserve or enhance nutritional values, while taking action to limit potentially harmful forms of ultra-processing associated with diet-related disease. Food-based safety nets and improvements in the food environment can make healthy diets affordable for all people at all times, to help every country reach global development goals.

Abstract: In this study, the content of 11 bioelements and 3 heavy metals in the dry nettle leaf and its water extract was investigated. Nettles were sampled from three different locations in Montenegro (northern, central and southern region). The determination of elements was done using the ICP – OES method. The bioelement content varies with geographic and climatic characteristics. Out of the four macroelements, whose presence was examined in nettle, the highest content is Ca, followed by K, then Mg, and the lowest is Na. Meanwhile, when it comes to microelements, the highest content is Fe, followed by Mn, Zn, and Cu. The amount of Fe as well as Ca and Mg was the most prominent in the sample from the mountain location, while the highest quantities of Cu and K were found in the samples from lower altitudes. The aim of this study was to determine the percentage of daily biometal requirements met through the consumption of nettles, either as a vegetable or as tea. By consuming nettle (5g/d), the greatest fulfilment of daily needs is achieved for Ca, Mg, K, Mn and Fe (52-5%), while the percentage of meeting daily needs for Na is negligible (below 0.04). The high content of K and the low content of Na qualify nettle to maintain a good balance of these electrolytes in the human body, which can be disturbed by an improper diet. Contract Driven Development formalizes functional requirements within component contracts. The process aims to produce higher quality software, reduce quality assurance costs and improve reusability. However, the perceived complexity and cost of requirements formalization has limited the adoption of this approach in industry. In this article, we consider the extent to which the overheads of requirements formalization can be netted off against the reduced quality assurance costs arising from being able to autogenerate functional test interceptors from component contracts. Test-interceptors are used during testing to verify that component contracts are satisfied. In particular, we investigate the impact of contract-driven development on both the quality attributes of the software development process and the quality of the software produced by the process. Empirical data obtained from an actual software project using contract-driven development with test interceptor generation is compared to that obtained from similar projects that used a traditional software development process with informal requirements and manually written functional tests.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) established an Extreme Drilling Lab to engineer effective and efficient drilling technologies viable at depths greater than 20,000 feet. This paper details the challenges of ultra-deep drilling, documents reports of decreased drilling rates as a result of increasing fluid pressure and temperature, and describes NETL’s Research and Development activities. NETL is invested in laboratory-scale physical simulation. Their physical simulator will have capability of circulating drilling fluids at 30,000 psi and 480 °F around a single drill cutter. This simulator will not yet be operational by the planned conference dates; therefore, the results will be limited to identification of leading hypotheses of drilling phenomena and NETL’s test plans to validate or refute such theories. Of particular interest to the Extreme Drilling Lab’s studies are the combinatorial effects of drilling fluid pressure, drilling fluid properties, rock properties, pore pressure, and drilling parameters, such as cutter rotational speed, weight on bit, and hydraulics associated with drilling fluid introduction to the rock-cutter interface. A detailed discussion of how each variable is controlled in a laboratory setting will be part of the conference paper and presentation.

Abstract Internally pressurised pipe behaves differently than externally pressurised pipe. DNVGL-ST-F101 [4], a prevailing standard for the design of submarine pipelines, provides limit-state equations for combined loading that are valid only if the diameter-to-wall-thickness ratio (D/t) is between 15 and 45. A recent study has shown that the results are increasingly conservative for lower values of this ratio if the nett pressure is acting on the pipe’s outside [8], especially if it is below 20. In this paper, the applicability of the limit-state equations for thick-walled pipe with D/t less than 15 and loaded by a nett internal pressure has been investigated. The first step was a fundamental review of the formulations. Next, the predicted capacities were compared with those estimated using a finite-element (FE) model. The results greatly coincided, which indicates that the conservatism underlying the formulations does not depend on D/t. Hence they can be used for design against local buckling under internal overpressure, too, when the ratio is below 15.

Abstract In the process of fabricating high density mounting boards, locating faults in boards rejected in a functional test requires special circuit knowledge and skills, so it has been becoming more and more difficult to find the faults in a limited time. To address this problem, we have developed an Auto-Fault-Locating-System for mounting boards using a simple comparison technique and faulty net tracing algorithm. In the system, net-propagated faults are detected by comparing pulse-counts and voltages in good boards and faulty ones under full power supply. Faulty nets, which include the fault origin, are detected by tracing backward via a faulty propagation path using the input-output attribute of terminals. Measurements require 2.5 seconds per net (i.e., about 40 minutes for 1,000 nets), and searching faulty nets requires 10-20 seconds. The system successfully located the fault origin in 22 out of 25 boards rejected in a functional test. The located fault origins were found to be IC problems, pattern errors, open terminals and shorts between nets.

Is the perineuronal net structure within emotional processing brain regions associated with changes in affective state? The objective of this scoping review is to bring together the literature on human and animal studies which have measured perineuronal net structure in brain regions associated with emotional processing (such as but not limited to amygdala, hippocampus and prefrontal cortex). Perineuronal nets are a specialised form of condensed extracellular matrix that enwrap and protect neurons (Suttkus et al., 2016), regulate synaptic plasticity (Celio and Blumcke, 1994) and ion homeostasis (Morawski et al., 2015). Perineuronal nets are dynamic structures that are influenced by external and internal environmental shifts – for example, increasing in intensity and number in response to stressors (Blanco and Conant, 2021) and pharmacological agents (Riga et al., 2017). This review’s objective is to generate a compilation of existing knowledge regarding the structural changes of perineuronal nets in experimental studies that manipulate affective state, including those that alter environmental stressors. The outcomes will inform future research directions by elucidating non-cellular central nervous system mechanisms that underpin positive and negative emotional states. These methods may also be targets for manipulation to manage conditions of depression or promote wellbeing. The Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) market is experiencing rapid development, with different regions adopting distinct approaches. In Europe, the progress is primarily driven top-down through the implementation of regulations aimed at integrating CDR into various climate instrument pillars within the EU. In contrast, the United States is witnessing a bottom-up growth trajectory, characterized by the emergence of start-ups, carbon registries, marketplaces, and insurance companies, all playing a role in the expansion of the CDR sector. This surge in CDR-related businesses has been further catalyzed by substantial subsidies, particularly through the recent adjustments made to the 45Q tax credit system. The amendments were introduced as part of the "Inflation Reduction Act" (IRA) and the "Bipartisan Infrastructure Law" (BIL). Under these modifications, significant tax credits are offered for carbon capture and utilization at point sources, with subsequent storage (CCS). Notably, the tax credits have increased to 60 USD/tCO2 for carbon capture and utilization and storage at point sources, and to 85 USD/tCO2 for direct air capture and storage. The tax credits go even higher, amounting to 130 and 180 USD/tCO2, respectively, for utilization and storage if the carbon is directly removed from the air. In addition to these measures, the IRA and BIL also allocate substantial funding for forestry and sequestration projects, carbon transport infrastructure, and carbon removal hubs to test and develop technologies. Simultaneously, some top-down initiatives have been set in motion in the US, exemplified by the introduction of the Carbon Dioxide Removal Market Development Act as part of California's Cap-and-Trade Program. This act mandates emitting entities to offset a certain percentage of their emissions through CDR in subsequent years, culminating in full compensation of emissions with CDR by 2045. Moreover, the act emphasizes the promotion of domestic development by requiring that at least 50% of the negative emissions credits used by an emitting entity originate from CDR processes that directly mitigate climate impacts within the state. Against this backdrop, it comes as no surprise that the CDR start-up scene is predominantly dominated by US companies, with ocean-based removal companies accounting for approximately 10 percent of the market. However, despite their presence, ocean-based CDR projects are currently limited, with the majority focused on blue carbon projects, particularly mangrove restoration, and only a few exploring other ocean-based CDR methods. The land-based portion of the CDR market appears to be effectively addressing accounting, verification, and registry aspects, primarily due to market demand or existing regulations. Nevertheless, the development of such bottom-up approaches remains less likely for open access schemes like ocean-based CDR initiatives.

De acuerdo con el último informe del Grupo Intergubernamental de Expertos sobre el Cambio Climático publicado en 2021, se están produciendo cambios climáticos sin precedentes. El informe establece que para limitar el calentamiento global a cerca de 1,5C ó 2C será necesaria la reducción inmediata, rápida y a gran escala de las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero. Se requerirá, por lo tanto, mayores compromisos por parte de los países. Varios países se han comprometido a alcanzar emisiones netas cero para el 2050. Particularmente, el sector energético es uno de los que producen más emisiones de efecto invernadero. Por lo tanto, es de principal interés su descarbonización. El hidrógeno verde se presenta como un potencial vector energético que permitirá contribuir a alcanzar dicha meta. Varios países ya han avanzado en el desarrollo de estrategias y hojas de ruta de hidrógeno y han anunciado varios proyectos. El hidrógeno verde se presenta como una oportunidad para Uruguay, tanto para la descarbonización de su economía como en lo referente a las posibilidades de exportación. La matriz eléctrica del país es altamente renovable, cuenta con un alto potencial de generación con energías renovables no convencionales aún sin utilizar, y la disponibilidad del recurso eólico y solar permiten que estas energías sean altamente complementarias. Asimismo, el país tiene atributos de interés para el desarrollo de inversiones, ha tenido grandes avances en digitalización y cuenta con una buena ubicación geográfica con acceso a puertos y rutas que interconectan el país. Uruguay ya se encuentra impulsando el hidrógeno verde mediante dos líneas principales: la promoción de un proyecto piloto para transporte pesado que permitirá la prueba de la tecnología y la generación de capacidades y conocimiento; y el desarrollo de su estrategia nacional de hidrógeno verde. Esta nota técnica realiza una breve revisión del estado del desarrollo de hidrógeno verde a nivel mundial, analiza las ventajas competitivas de Uruguay como productor y exportador de hidrógeno verde; presenta los principales hallazgos del estudio de prefactibilidad de exportación realizado por MIEM y PoR; analiza los potenciales usos locales de hidrógeno verde y sus derivados y los potenciales beneficios en términos de la reactivación económica; y presenta las principales iniciativas que está desarrollando el gobierno en el marco de la promoción del desarrollo del ecosistema de hidrógeno verde a nivel nacional.
