Rallying its units for an impending spin-off from General Motors, the Delphi Automotive Systems division cleared the Delphi Delco Electronics (Delphi-D) unit to begin planning for entry into China in 1994. Delphi saw China as ideal for leveraging its technological and innovation capabilities as well as the enormous General Motor heritage and reputation from years of experience delivering quality products to the automotive industry. Delphi-D found a perfect partner in Shanghai Changjiang YiBiao Factory (SCY) (name disguised to protect the firms) that held nearly 50% of the Chinese automobile instrument cluster market. SCY was keen on acquiring new technology to meet increasingly sophisticated customer demands in order to retain market lead as well as to tap into the international market. After rounds of negotiation the two firms formed a fifty-fifty joint venture, Shanghai Delco Electronics Ltd. (SDE) in August 1996. However, SDE started experiencing problems almost immediately. The Delphi-D team at SDE assumed their SCY counterparts would willingly integrate proposed technology and the requisite processes at the joint venture. However, the SCY team resisted prescriptions from the Delphi-D team that they sometimes perceived as "haughty". Broiled in culturally-loaded misunderstanding in a market that was becoming complex by the day as the government legislated new regulations and other manufacturers jostled for a piece of the market, SDE's management sought focus by developing a five-year plan that captured the partners' goals in 1998. However, as the end of 2002 approached, SDE's five-year plan remained largely unrealized. This case shows how implementation challenges can affect the realization of joint venture objectives and illustrates specific challenges that can mar even a well-formulated technology intensive international joint venture strategy.

The authors present a theory of the general enabling conditions for war which predicts that war is possible, though not inevitable, when the conditions of the theory are satisfied. Whether a war will actually occur depends upon the idiosyncratic situational factors that are outside the scope of the theory. Three conditions make war possible: (i) Aspirations do not match achievements: governments only initiate wars when their achieved share of global capabilities differs from their aspired share of capabilities. (2) Salience: governments only initiate wars against other governments when there is a history of substantial interaction. (3) Power: governments never initiate wars against other governments that have a substantially greater military capacity. These conditions may be viewed as a series of three filters that identify pairs of countries between which war is possible. The theory predicts that wars will not occur in any dyad that does not pass through all the filters. In testing this theory for all nations between 1816 and 1980, the authors allowed for the fact that governments may preemptively initiate wars against other governments that meet these conditions.

The case is written at this crucial juncture of the changing economy wherein a mammoth like H. & R. Johnson, with a rich lineage of product and process innovations and international and domestic (Indian) market leadership needed to make the best out of the changing economy. Should HRJIL ride the retail wave by offering different products from its broad range of products, like ready-made kitchens, living rooms and the like; or should the company, given its dreams and present capabilities, utilize the unmet customer service gaps to provide services required of laying tiles, and in the process, develop servicing capabilities to become an end-to-end solution provider to its customers. The purpose of this case is to enable students to practice making decisions for the company at this important point in time with regard to the market opportunities by considering the capabilities and the core competencies of the company, its business model, and the existing distribution network.

We develop a model of infection spread that takes into account the existence of a vulnerable group as well as the variability of the social relations of individuals. We develop a compartmentalized power-law model, with power-law connections between the vulnerable and the general population, considering these connections as well as the connections among the vulnerable as parameters that we vary in our tests. We use the model to study a number of vaccination strategies under two hypotheses: first, we assume a limited availability of vaccine but an infinite vaccination capacity, so all the available doses can be administered in a short time (negligible with respect to the evolution of the epidemic). Then, we assume a limited vaccination capacity, so the doses are administered in a time non-negligible with respect to the evolution of the epidemic. We develop optimal strategies for the various social parameters, where a strategy consists of (1) the fraction of vaccine that is administered to the vulnerable population and (2) the criterion that is used to administer it to the general population. In the case of a limited vaccination capacity, the fraction (1) is a function of time, and we study how to optimize it to obtain a maximal reduction in the number of fatalities.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of organizational capabilities on sustainable competitive advantage in audit firms using a case study of Deloitte LimitedMethodology: A descriptive research design was used. The study population was drawn from the offices at Deloitte Place on Waiyaki Way. The study conducted a census of all the 106 staff from the target population. Primary data was used and was collected using questionnaires. Quantitative data analysis conducted using SPSS. Quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. Correlation analysis was also conducted. The qualitative analysis was used to make conclusions on the open ended questions.Results: The study findings revealed that generally, the human resource capabilities, infrastructure and technology capabilities as well as the reputation capability of the firm could be described as average. Only the leadership capabilities were found to be above average based on the responses given. The study established that the firm had attained sustained competitive advantage mostly in the areas of brand identity and protection, organizational culture and the quality of services delivered. The study further established that HR capabilities, leadership capabilities, infrastructure and technology capabilities as well as reputation capability positively and significantly affected the level of sustainable competitive advantage at Delloite Kenya.Unique contribution to theory, practice and policy: The study recommended that the firm needed to modify and develop its existing organizational capabilities of the firm beyond the average level. The study also recommended the firm needed to increase the level of utilization of information systems in streamlining/interlinking its processes so that there was quicker and increased information sharing within the firm for efficiency and flexibility in responding to customer needs. It was further recommended that the firm’s organization constructs that is, an innovation-oriented organizational structure and an innovation friendly organizational culture be advanced to support and enhance the firm’s capabilities.

This paper introduces a strategy for the path planning problem for platforms with limited sensor and processing capabilities. The proposed algorithm does not require any prior information but assumes that a mapping algorithm is used. If enough information is available, a global path planner finds sub-optimal collision-free paths within the known map. For the real time obstacle avoidance task, a simple and cost-efficient local planner is used, making the algorithm a hybrid global and local planning solution. The strategy was tested in a real, cluttered environment experiment using the Pioneer P3-DX and the Xbox 360 kinect sensor, to validate and evaluate the algorithm efficiency.

The selection of partners is critical for the success of interorganizational projects. Based on conceptual reasoning in light of prior research, as well as illustrative empirical insights into an ongoing interorganizational project in the construction industry, we argue that partner selection practices not only target the organizational capabilities of potential partners but they themselves require an organizational capability to search for, evaluate, and select. This article delineates the facets of this capability, reveals the role of digital capabilities therein, and shows that the respective capabilities are crucial for inclusion and exclusion in interorganizational projects. The results also point to capabilities that emerge at the interorganizational nexus.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease affecting the respiratory system, which has had an unprecedented effect on healthcare systems globally with severe impact on specialist services. In December 2019, a novel coronavirus strain (CoV) was detected in Wuhan, China. By January 2020, It named as 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) by the World Health Organization (WHO). On February 24, Iraq announced that an Iranian student has infected by coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the south of Iraq in the holy Shiite city (Najaf). This was the first confirmed case in the whole of Iraq. The patient entered the country before the Iraqi government decided to restrict the entry of Iranian citizens on border crossings or airports. This article sheds light on the following concepts: The unqualified health system in Iraq to face the pandemic disease like COVID-19; the religious rituals in Iraq which contributed to the events of large gatherings to visit the holy shrines which increase the virus spread. Finally, discuss the social customs and traditions where the spread of the Coronavirus in Iraq has modified Iraqi customs and traditions that show personal affection through physical touch.

Despite the rising interest in the nature of open innovation and its implications for greater strategic alliance performance, limited attention has been paid to what the dynamic managerial capabilities underpinning those processes are. Moreover, only limited research has examined how open innovation is practiced by firms working within various network forms (ecosystems, platforms, and strategic alliances) and what dynamic managerial capabilities ensure such networks’ collaborations. We need to further develop the concept of the coupled (collaborative) type of open innovation and to show how open innovation mechanisms, such as strategic alliances, are underpinned by dynamic managerial capabilities and to understand what their “micro-foundations” are. Thus, the goal of this article is to understand the role of sub-capabilities (how managers think and decide) of dynamic managerial capabilities as drivers of successful alliance performance.

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to explore the applicability of analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to collective decision-making of local and state disaster managers for their efficient and effective allocation of limited financial resources.Design/methodology/approachFor the implementation of AHP, this study conducted an AHP survey with state and local disaster managers in post-Katrina Louisiana, the USA.FindingsThe AHP analysis disclosed a preference gap between local and state managers. It also identified frequent interaction with partners, leadership and communication, as the most critical capabilities to develop for effective emergency management.Research limitations/implicationsThis study discussed the value of consistent and careful management of the collaborative relationship. This study is context-specific in disaster type (Hurricane) and locality (Louisiana). Other AHP studies or similar multi-criteria decision-making models should be implemented in different contexts.Originality/valueEven with clear advantages of collective decision-making in the emergency management field, a model for collective decision-making has been rare. This study explored the applicability of AHP to the collective decision-making for the efficient and effective allocation of limited financial resources.

Dramatic advances in synchrotron radiation sources produce ever-brighter beams of X-rays, but those advances can only be used if there is a corresponding improvement in X-ray detectors. With the advent of storage ring sources capable of being diffraction-limited (down to a certain wavelength), advances in detector speed, dynamic range and functionality is required. While many of these improvements in detector capabilities are being pursued now, the orders-of-magnitude increases in brightness of diffraction-limited storage ring sources will require challenging non-incremental advances in detectors. This article summarizes the current state of the art, developments underway worldwide, and challenges that diffraction-limited storage ring sources present for detectors.

ABSTRACT Research on dynamic capabilities explores how businesses change enables enterprises to remain competitive. However, theory on dynamic capabilities still struggles to capture novelty, the essence of change. This study argues that a full understanding of strategic change requires us to sharpen our focus on real people and experiences; in turn, we must incorporate other faculties, which almost always operate alongside our logical ones, into our theory. We must pay more attention to the "non-rational" sides of ourselves-including, but not limited to, our imaginations, intuitions, attractions, biographies, preferences, and aesthetic faculties and capabilities. We argue that all such faculties, on the one hand, are central to our abilities to comprehend and cope with complexity and, on the other hand, foster novel understandings, potential responses, and social creativity. This study introduces the possibility of an alternative form of inquiry that highlights the role of poetic faculties in strategic behavior and change.

Aim/Purpose: Digital health is increasingly being utilized in clinical practice given its ease of accessibility, but it lacks emphasis from universities and accreditation bodies. This study attempted to better understand the digital capabilities of optometry students. Background: With technological advancements transforming the Australian workforce and healthcare, there is a growing demand for digitally competent graduates. This study investigated digital perceptions and preferences of optometry students relating to their studies and readiness for work in healthcare. Methodology: Current optometry students participated in an anonymous online survey. Questions were designed to evaluate their understanding and awareness of digital skills and competencies for learning whilst at university, and for use in the health sector workforce. Results were analyzed to underscore key trends and answers to open-ended questions underwent inductive thematic analysis to generate themes for discussion. Contribution: Optometry educators can bridge the gap in digital practices between students and the workplace by obtaining a baseline of their capabilities and incorporating specific activities within the curriculum to increase student awareness and support their understanding and development in this aspect. Findings: Most students were confident in using daily technologies for learning. Reference management software was perceived to be most important and useful skill to attain. While students were less confident in creating applications, they were keen to learn even though it seemed peripheral to their career and professional development. 70% of the students knew how to manage their online privacy and security. Of the students, 92% highlighted that attaining competency in digital skills would enhance their career and professional development, but only 54% believed they possessed the relevant skills for entering the workforce. Only 19% of the students reported having sufficient university support. Recommendations for Practitioners: Digital capabilities of learners do need to be taught explicitly and should not be assumed. To improve student learning outcomes, digital skills and competencies need to be embedded throughout the curriculum and addressed through learning objectives. Recommendation for Researchers: More work needs to be done in implementing digital training and services at a subject, course, and institutional level. Some international benchmarking of optometry curricula and optometry research would clarify the need for digital education, to educators and students alike. Impact on Society: Currently, there is a lack of recognition of digital health by accrediting bodies, thus preventing digital competency from being a priority in the curriculum of schools. There is a further need to establish dialogue between universities, employers, and accrediting bodies to set consistent and realistic expectations of digital skills and competencies. Future Research: Future studies should consider having larger sample sizes to observe similarities and differences in digital capabilities between year levels. Student focus groups and interviews can be performed to better understand the rationale behind the desire and interest to learn digital technologies that seemed irrelevant to optometry.

Tutor's Ability to Utilize Learning Media for Bridal Makeup Training Program at LKP Ulfah Karawang. The ability of tutors to use instructional media at the time of implementation is already in the skilled stage. In conducting the training there are three stages, namely planning, implementation and evaluation. The cosmetology training plan includes initial preparation with activities that include preparing modules as teaching material to be delivered by tutors, reviewing the material to be delivered and preparing examples of Sundanese-style bridal fashion and facial sketch media. In the implementation of tutors utilizing media that has been prepared beforehand, and in the delivery of material the tutor uses examples of Sundanesestyle bridal clothing and facial sketch media. The next stage is evaluation, the evaluation is centered on the tutor because only the tutor evaluates. Evaluation is carried out at each meeting to determine the ability of learning citizens. The overall evaluation was conducted at the last meeting, namely the makeup competency test. The overall evaluation phase tutors judge based on the results because if the results are appropriate then the makeup technique is correct and the media utilization is correct. The inhibiting factor in utilizing the learning media of LKP Ulfah's bridal make up training program comes from internal and external factors. Internal factors that arise obstacles are the nature of what it is in utilizing learning media, while the external factor is the limited space and the limited media used. In preparation, implementation and follow-up in utilizing tutor learning media is less than optimal.Keywords: the ability of tutors, learning media

Abstract Focusing on capital flight of the worst kind for developing countries—stolen public assets—we develop a model which shows that both the threat of losing elective office and its complement, the threat of delayed detection, do not affect the choice of whether to plunder or not. Rather they mitigate the level of plundering. The role of instantaneous detection in the model drives the implication that separating a miscreant from the benefits of his crime can be an effective deterrent. However, such weaponry requires investment in the capabilities for “integrated financial investigation” and international cooperation. The ideas espoused in this paper corroborate the logic of the StAR initiative of the UNODC and the World Bank. We suggest the development of a research agenda on how to (i) grow adequate capabilities for detection, and (ii) create the political demand for the required international cooperation.

The problem of formation of structural-logical model of emergency management of regional level in the conditions of limited operational possibilities of emergency rescue divisions is considered in the work. The analysis of the current state of the issue of forecasting the effectiveness of emergency rescue units allowed to identify the existing problem in the field of civil defense, namely the lack of adequate mathematical apparatus that would form short-term and long-term forecasts of the dynamics of operational capacity and operational capacity of rescue units based on constantly changing information on the number and quality of regional hazards. The authors believe that this issue can be solved by forming a comprehensive expert-statistical methodology, which in turn is based on the modern idea of the emergency management process in a complex natural-technogenic-social transformations. The study examines the sequence of work on management decisions in terms of limited operational capabilities and formed a range of functional limitations that allows to clearly define the information field of the structural-logical model of emergency management and parameterize direct and feedback within the latter. Structural and logical model of emergency management at the regional level in terms of limited operational capabilities of emergency rescue units, consists of two control circuits: general circuit (sufficient) and additional (limited) circuit, which operates in case of limited operational capabilities of emergency rescue units. It consists of eight blocks, namely: establishing the fact of the existence of limitations of operational capabilities of rescue units, clarification and assessment of the situation in the emergency zone, preparation of management decisions, preparation of proposals for additional forces, application of the latest methods of operational capacity funds, organization of return of additional forces and means to the cities of permanent deployment. The practical significance of the results is the ability to develop, based on the existing structural and logical model of emergency management at the regional level in terms of limited operational capabilities of rescue units, a method of calculating operational capacity and operational capacity of the territorial unit, based on existing and forecast potential levels, man-made, social and military nature and take into account their interaction. Coherent X-ray imaging techniques, such as in-line holography, exploit the high brilliance provided by diffraction-limited storage rings to perform imaging sensitive to the electron density through contrast due to the phase shift, rather than conventional attenuation contrast. Thus, coherent X-ray imaging techniques enable high-sensitivity and low-dose imaging, especially for low-atomic-number (Z) chemical elements and materials with similar attenuation contrast. Here, the first implementation of in-line holography at the NanoMAX beamline is presented, which benefits from the exceptional focusing capabilities and the high brilliance provided by MAX IV, the first operational diffraction-limited storage ring up to approximately 300 eV. It is demonstrated that in-line holography at NanoMAX can provide 2D diffraction-limited images, where the achievable resolution is only limited by the 70 nm focal spot at 13 keV X-ray energy. Also, the 3D capabilities of this instrument are demonstrated by performing holotomography on a chalk sample at a mesoscale resolution of around 155 nm. It is foreseen that in-line holography will broaden the spectra of capabilities of MAX IV by providing fast 2D and 3D electron density images from mesoscale down to nanoscale resolution.

AbstractThe dynamic capabilities view posits that a firm’s success is largely driven by its ability to adapt to a changing environment to secure value creating potential and, thus achieve a competitive advantage. The dynamic capabilities perspective has attracted much scholarly attention in the last two decades, as reflected in the proliferation of conceptual and research articles in the strategic management literature. Knowledge about the relationship between dynamic capabilities and other theoretical concepts within the strategic management field remains limited. This paper therefore synthesizes the literature and uses it to develop a more clear relationship between notions of dynamic capabilities, resources, assets, competencies and static capabilities. Potential areas of future research are also outlined.

The Large Earth-based Solar Telescope (LEST) will be a powerful, next-generation telescope with unprecedented angular resolution, capable of highly accurate polarimetry of the Sun, covering the optical spectral range from about 300 nm into the near infrared to about 2.5 μm.The telescope is a 2.4-m aperture, “polarization-free” concept based on a modified Gregorian optical system. A fast polarization modulator will be located close to the secondary focus of the system. An actively controlled NTT-type main mirror, a high precision pointing and tracking system, a helium-filled light path and a thin entrance window, together with an integrated adaptive optics system, will give the telescope near diffraction-limited performance in the visible. LEST will be sited on La Palma, in the Canary Islands, near the caldera rim on the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, which often offers excellent seeing. A frequently occurring seeing parameter of ro = 15–20 cm in the visible will correspond to ro ≥ 1 m in the near IR.The construction of LEST will begin in 1993, and the telescope is to be ready for “first light” in 1997. The telescope facility will accommodate a large number of focal plane instruments on a spacious instrument table. LEST will be made available for near-IR instrumentation from the start of its regular operation.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to characterize how services present responsibilized consumers with well-being capabilities. This is done by drawing on structuration theory and literatures on responsibilization, social well-being and psychological well-being. Design/methodology/approach This paper is based on conceptual development and a qualitative interpretive study of value propositions in texts and images on websites of 11 different self-tracking wearables and applications. Findings This paper introduces the changing–coping–countering characterization to explicate different types of well-being capabilities that are represented in services. These capabilities represent different stances towards structures. This paper proposes and discusses how these capabilities can have different impacts on well-being on individual and collective levels. Research limitations/implications This study is limited to the perspective of services in a self-tracking context. Further empirical research is needed to investigate well-being capabilities from consumer perspectives. Practical implications The proposed characterization can help practitioners in becoming more reflexive concerning their value propositions that relate to consumer well-being. This implies becoming aware of well-being discourses that shape and affect service development. Originality/value This paper provides a novel characterization for understanding the role of services in the context of responsibilization. It contributes to structural perspectives on the role of services in contributing to well-being.

Target. Research of the efficiency of Isida substances in the complex therapy of psoriasis. Маterial and methods. The research comprises 30 patients with psoriasis, treated in hospital (15 — with limited vulgar psoriasis and 15 — with palm and foot psoriasis) with Isida substances (cream gel for dry and sensible face and body skin and cream gel for hands). Results. The good efficiency and tolerance are highlighted: the decrease of PASI index by 53,6% at patients with limited vulgar psoriasis and by 47,4% at patients with palm and foot psoriasis. The dermatologic life quality index at all patients has decreased by 55,9%.

Purpose – This paper aims to focus on how organisational capabilities, enhancing the dynamic capability perspective, evolve during a more than five-year offshoring process in four Danish small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The strategic decision to offshore some manufacturing activities meant that capabilities were ruptured and had to be rebuilt. Design/methodology/approach – The empirical investigation took the form of qualitative case studies with a longitudinal orientation focussing in on a few events in the four cases (strategic change in the sourcing configuration) as a process research design (Pettigrew, 1990; Van de Ven, 2007). Interviews were transcribed and coded in NVivo. Findings – The four cases followed distinct trajectories, but they all changed their routines regarding how to handle knowledge, including both technology and human resources. A need for specific human resources acting as boundary spanners arose, transforming both intra- and inter-organisational practices in all four cases. More complex activities were moved offshore to enhance the dynamic capabilities of the companies regarding both product development as well as specific processes, thereby transforming/reconfiguring the organisational capabilities of the companies. However, in the two small-sized cases, more complex/less routinised activities were backsourced, demonstrating a significant problem over time with the development of sufficient organisational resources to maintain seizing and sensing capabilities within these companies in comparison with the two other medium-sized cases. Research limitations/implications – The fact that most of the data were generated from an inside-out perspective, taking the point of departure in the core firms, can be viewed as a limitation. The authors’ data on the wider network are also limited. Finally, the authors’ interviews are conducted relatively infrequently when considering the length of the process. Practical implications – The four longitudinal cases show that the longer-term offshoring journey does not involve a single path or a single best practice. The cases show captive as well as outsourcing arrangements and even enterprise transformations. The cases demonstrate a common focus on finding and nurturing core suppliers and core business processes, which can be characterised as continual learning and development of organising capabilities. Originality/value – The study contributes to the growing body of research into dynamic (organisational) capabilities in an offshoring and SME context.

Purpose – To cope with the increasing challenges of globalisation, various manufacturing companies have established intra-company manufacturing networks. The purpose of this paper is to link the strategic network targets (i.e. accessibility, thriftiness represented by economies of scale and economies of scope, mobility, and learning) with the capabilities and characteristics of the constituting sites of the manufacturing network and thus facilitate the identification of mismatches and the discussion of possible development paths for the network. Design/methodology/approach – The authors derive a conceptual framework from the literature which is tested with a single case; a manufacturing network consisting of eight manufacturing sites. Case data were collected based on 24 interviews with operations managers at network level and a standardised online survey among the sites’ management teams. Findings – Results indicate that manufacturing network and site levels need to be related when striving for a fit between manufacturing strategy, network strategy, and site capabilities and characteristics. Research limitations/implications – Single case studies have only limited generalisability. Nevertheless, the case demonstrates the usefulness of several dimensions when analysing manufacturing networks on site and network level. Originality/value – This paper represents the first attempt to link strategic targets of intra-company manufacturing networks with site capabilities and characteristics. Thereby, it provides a theoretical basis for future research on the relationship between strategic targets of manufacturing networks and their fulfilment. The developed manufacturing site portfolio, moreover, extends the site role typology discussion by a multi-dimensional perspective and represents a starting point for a multi-faceted discussion of site roles.

BACKGROUND: While Fairbanks, AK, USA, is a remote location with significant constraints on medical resources and specialty care, a small U.S. Air Force clinic was able to provide a pilot with definitive care for neurological decompression sickness.CASE REPORT: A 31-yr-old female patient presented to her flight surgeon in Anchorage, AK, USA, with migrating polyarthropathy and headaches 48 h after a flight which included planned aircraft decompression for high altitude low opening (HALO) jump operations. In order to get definitive treatment in a hyperbaric chamber, the patient typically would have to be flown to Seattle, WA, USA. This transfer of care would cost the Air Force approximately 150,000 and may have led to more complicated disease. Fortunately, Eielson Air Force Base (AFB) in Fairbanks had previously procured a Hyperlite hyperbaric chamber specifically for this situation. After consultation with a hyperbaric specialist, the team decided that the most appropriate course of action was to transfer her by car 6 h north from Anchorage to Fairbanks. On initiation of the Hart treatment table, she experienced immediate reduction in joint pain with a reversal of neurological symptoms.DISCUSSION: This patients care could not have been done without the procurement of a hyperbaric chamber. This case demonstrates the utility and necessity for these capabilities at more facilities that manage significant flying operations. Military bases should ensure that hyperbaric treatment capabilities are available within a close proximity.Petruso MJ, Philbrick SM. AbstractMicroscopy enables fast and effective diagnostics. However, in resource-limited regions microscopy is not accessible to everyone. Smartphone-based low-cost microscopes could be a powerful tool for diagnostic and educational purposes. In this paper, the imaging quality of a smartphone-based microscope with four different optical parameters is presented and a systematic overview of the resulting diagnostic applications is given. With the chosen configuration, aiming for a reasonable trade-off, an average resolution of 1.23 μm and a field of view of 1.12 mm2 was achieved. This enables a wide range of diagnostic applications such as the diagnosis of Malaria and other parasitic diseases.

Diagnostics of genetic diseases in clinical routine often presents a challenge. In particular, most of hereditary diseases are exceptionally rare and therefore unfamiliar to practicing physicians. Furthermore, even if the diagnosis of a particular genetic condition appears convincing on the level of clinical evidence, the causative mutation often remains unknown due to limitations in DNA testing procedures. Recently developed high-throughput sequencing technologies (Next Generation Sequencing, NGS; synonym: massive parallel sequencing) provide a breakthrough in medical genetics. While in the past genetic testing was limited to a single gene or, at best, to a small number of genes, NGS is compatible with a large-scale DNA analysis. One of the most popular applications of NGS is whole exome sequencing (WES), which allows simultaneous reading of coding sequences (exons) of all known genes. Although this technology exists only for a few years, its use has already led to discovery of the causes of more than 150 genetic syndromes. Furthermore, WES may be recommended for the use in clinical routine for selected patients with orphan disease, especially for the families with multiple affected relative. It is likely that WES will become a powerful screening tool in the near future. This review discusses general principles of WES as well as the applications of this technology in medicine.
