This entry paper is an attempt to explain how the discrete nature of light (energy discreteness in the form of photons) constrains the light detection process all along the evolutionary path, in the not-fully-understood photoreceptive systems of unicellular microorganisms (nonimaging systems) and in the complex and well-known visual system of higher organisms (imaging systems). All these systems are perfect examples of the interplay between physics and biology, i.e., they are the perfect topic of research for biophysicists. The paper describes how photoreceptive and visual systems achieve the goal of photon counting, which information is conveyed by a finite number of photons, and which noise factors limit light-detecting processes.

PurposeTo elaborate a methodology enabling organizations to define their strategic processes among other processes.Design/methodology/approachA case study approach has been chosen due to the nature of this research. Case study research method is qualitative method but it can be positivist. The mix of techniques is appropriate and some degree of quantification is necessary. Three high‐level steps are designed and these steps are developed in the managerial holding companies (research case study).FindingsBecause of limitations on budget and time, organizations are able to define the processes which are critical to achieve organizations' goals. This methodology has a holistic view in organizations by using balanced scorecard framework.Research limitations/implicationsThis research is based on a single case. Generalization based on this case should be interpreted cautiously and a limitation of the case study should be kept in mind. Furthermore, the strategy of the research case is a competitive strategy and the strategic processes are chosen according to this strategy. They may be changed based on other strategies. In interpreting the result, these limitations should be kept in mind.Originality/valueDefining the strategic processes helps organizations to use their resources based on their objectives. This paper presents a methodology that improves the ability of organizations in managing and directing their resources efficiently.

Анотація:

Currently, we are witnessing many changes in the social and business environment, that affect the functioning of organizations, including their training policy and training management processes. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the number and frequency of changes, making the environment even more unpredictable, which makes it difficult to plan development processess and implement training activities over longer units of time. Therefore, there is a strong need to redefine the current approach to training management in business organizations. The main objective of this article is to ley down a new approach to trainings management, based on a literature review, which appears to be more flexible and adequate in the context of current social and business situation. This model is based on the choosen assumptions of agile methodologies, thus eliminates the shortcomings and limitations of the classical model. In summary, the main advantages and limitations of this approach are discussed.

Abstract. Terrestrial carbon (C) cycle models applied for climate projections simulate a strong increase in net primary productivity (NPP) due to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration during the 21st century. These models usually neglect the limited availability of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), nutrients that commonly limit plant growth and soil carbon turnover. To investigate how the projected C sequestration is altered when stoichiometric constraints on C cycling are considered, we incorporated a P cycle into the land surface model JSBACH (Jena Scheme for Biosphere–Atmosphere Coupling in Hamburg), which already includes representations of coupled C and N cycles. The model reveals a distinct geographic pattern of P and N limitation. Under the SRES (Special Report on Emissions Scenarios) A1B scenario, the accumulated land C uptake between 1860 and 2100 is 13% (particularly at high latitudes) and 16% (particularly at low latitudes) lower in simulations with N and P cycling, respectively, than in simulations without nutrient cycles. The combined effect of both nutrients reduces land C uptake by 25% compared to simulations without N or P cycling. Nutrient limitation in general may be biased by the model simplicity, but the ranking of limitations is robust against the parameterization and the inflexibility of stoichiometry. After 2100, increased temperature and high CO2 concentration cause a shift from N to P limitation at high latitudes, while nutrient limitation in the tropics declines. The increase in P limitation at high-latitudes is induced by a strong increase in NPP and the low P sorption capacity of soils, while a decline in tropical NPP due to high autotrophic respiration rates alleviates N and P limitations. The quantification of P limitation remains challenging. The poorly constrained processes of soil P sorption and biochemical mineralization are identified as the main uncertainties in the strength of P limitation. Even so, our findings indicate that global land C uptake in the 21st century is likely overestimated in models that neglect P and N limitations. In the long term, insufficient P availability might become an important constraint on C cycling at high latitudes. Accordingly, we argue that the P cycle must be included in global models used for C cycle projections.

Abstract Maximum temperature limitations are usually encountered in exothermic catalytic reaction systems due to catalyst deactivation. Therefore, the peak temperature in a cooled tubular reactor can be constrained to some maximum limit. The peak temperature is a function of many design and operating variables such as reactor volume and heat-transfer area (number of tubes, tube diameter and tube length), coolant temperature, inlet reactant concentration, per-pass conversion and reactant feed distribution. These variables affect the design of both the reactor and the separation section of the plant. This paper explores the impact of this peak temperature limitation on the economic design of the entire process. The numerical example used is the production of cumene from benzene and propylene. Results show that costs increase as the peak temperature limitation decreases. Use of two cooled reactors in series with the limiting reactant split between the reactors is more economical than a single reactor.

Goal-striving and achievement can be undermined when individuals have a competing desire to protect a cherished self-view. When individuals are more concerned with avoiding the negative implications of a likely failure than with self-improvement, they may ignore negative information or may even go so far as to purposefully undermine their own performance. For example, self-handicapping involves creating or claiming obstacles to success in order to protect self-esteem in the event of task failure. One method to reduce such destructive behavior is to address self-protection concerns through other means. Notably, affirming overall self-integrity by drawing attention to other positive aspects of the self has been previously shown to reduce subsequent self-handicapping behavior. The present studies demonstrate, however, that these effects may not be as broad as previously assumed. Specifically, only self-affirmations in domains unrelated to the current threat seem to be effective in reducing self-handicapping. Self-affirmations related to the threatened domain may only serve to create a standard of comparison for the current performance, maintaining or even intensifying the existing threat. Thus, it appears that attempts to protect a specific self-conception can severely hamper goal-striving and subsequent achievement. Implications for understanding the motivations underlying self-handicapping and for reducing this self-defeating behavior are discussed.

Un des objectifs de ce travail est l’autosurveillance des déversements d’un réseau d’assainissement vers le milieu naturel via la configuration spécifique des trop-pleins. La méthode décrite dans le guide n° 3 Coachs est aujourd’hui régulièrement mise en oeuvre pour ce type d’ouvrage. Le présent article présente neuf configurations qui ont été étalonnées par modélisation numérique 3D, car elles sortent de sa gamme d’application. Les lois hauteur-débit obtenues sont comparées à Coachs. Cette démarche montre que la gamme des diamètres peut être étendue aux Ø100 et Ø800, les débords et les obstacles ont peu d’impact. En revanche, une canalisation non perpendiculaire à la paroi de la chambre a un impact significatif sur la loi h/Q du fait de la déformation de la section mouillée et des lignes de courants à l’engouffrement.

Abstract. Absent glacial erosion, mountain range height is limited by the rate of bedrock river incision and is thought to asymptote to a steady-state elevation as erosion and rock uplift rates converge. For glaciated mountains, there is evidence that range height is limited by glacial erosion rates, which vary cyclically with glaciations. The strongest evidence for glacial limitation is at midlatitudes, where range-scale hypsometric maxima (modal elevations) lie within the bounds of Late Pleistocene snow line variation. In the tropics, where mountain glaciation is sparse, range elevation is generally considered to be fluvially limited and glacial limitation is discounted. Here we present topographic evidence to the contrary. By applying both old and new methods of hypsometric analysis to high mountains in the tropics, we show that (a) the majority are subject to glacial erosion linked to a perched base level set by the snow line or equilibrium line altitude (ELA) and (b) many truncate through glacial erosion towards the cold-phase ELA. Evaluation of the hypsometric analyses at two field sites where glacial limitation is seemingly marginal reveals how glaciofluvial processes act in tandem to accelerate erosion near the cold-phase ELA during warm phases and to reduce their preservation potential. We conclude that glacial erosion truncates high tropical mountains on a cyclic basis: zones of glacial erosion expand during cold periods and contract during warm periods as fluvially driven escarpments encroach and destroy evidence of glacial action. The inherent disequilibrium of this glaciofluvial limitation complicates the concept of time-averaged erosional steady state, making it meaningful only on long timescales far exceeding the interval between major glaciations.

Abstract There is a recognised need to address issues of vibration control by making use of recent developments in data-driven modelling. The present study considers the difficulties imposed by the limitations of the actuator in the range of active vibration control. The paper proposes and examines a data-based Gaussian process (GP) model of a proof mass actuator in a flexible structural framework, aiming to improve control performance. This requires incorporating an inverse GP of static nonlinearity within the Wiener-Hammerstein model. The model starts with designing model predictive control (MPC) for a cantilever beam, in which the aim is to identify the optimal control force. Utilising the GP is the second step towards quantifying the uncertainty and limitation of the proof mass actuator by designing an inverse GP for the static nonlinearity. This quantification forwards to an MPC controller using a steady-state target optimisation tracking approach, in which this controller provides the optimal voltage required to eliminate vibration within the controller’s limitations. The numerical outcome shows that the proposed scheme was capable of supplying the necessary voltage, which eliminated the structure’s vibration within an actuator’s limits. The results of this work encourage additional research into the developed strategy, particularly in the context of experimental real-time implementation.

Abstract There are known limitations in methods of detecting positive selection. Common methods do not enable differentiation between positive selection and compensatory covariation, a major limitation. Further, the traditional method of calculating the ratio of nonsynonymous to synonymous substitutions (dN/dS) does not take into account the 3D structure of biomacromolecules nor differences between amino acids. It also does not account for saturation of synonymous mutations (dS) over long evolutionary time that renders codon-based methods ineffective for older divergences. This work aims to address these shortcomings for detecting positive selection through the development of a statistical model that examines clusters of substitutions in clusters of variable radii. Additionally, it uses a parametric bootstrapping approach to differentiate positive selection from compensatory processes. A previously reported case of positive selection in the leptin protein of primates was reexamined using this methodology.

Abstract. Large-scale green tides have been invading the coastal zones of the western Yellow Sea annually since 2008. Meanwhile, oceans are becoming more acidic due to continuous absorption of anthropogenic carbon dioxide, and intensive seaweed cultivation in Chinese coastal areas is leading to severe regional nutrient limitation. However, little is known about the combined effects of global and local stressors on the eco-physiology of bloom-forming algae. We cultured Ulva linza for 9–16 days under two levels of pCO2 (400 and 1000 µatm) and four treatments of nutrients (nutrient repletion, N limitation, P limitation, and N–P limitation) to investigate the physiological responses of this green tide alga to the combination of ocean acidification and nutrient limitation. For both sporelings and adult plants, elevated pCO2 did not affect the growth rate when cultured under nutrient-replete conditions but reduced it under P limitation; N or P limitations by themselves reduced growth rate. P limitation resulted in a larger inhibition in growth for sporelings compared to adult plants. Sporelings under P limitation did not reach the mature stage after 16 days of culture while those under P repletion became mature by day 11. Elevated pCO2 reduced net photosynthetic rate for all nutrient treatments but increased nitrate reductase activity and soluble protein content under P-replete conditions. N or P limitation reduced nitrate reductase activity and soluble protein content. These findings indicate that ocean acidification and nutrient limitation would synergistically reduce the growth of Ulva species and may thus hinder the occurrence of green tides in a future ocean environment.

AbstractTo study the dynamics of ice sheets and glaciers, velocities at the bed of a glacier must be measured directly or calculated using data gathered from boreholes and surface surveys. Boreholes to the bed are expensive and time-consuming to drill, so the determination of basal velocity is almost exclusively by numerical inversion of velocities observed at the surface. For non-linearly viscous glaciers, a perturbation analysis demonstrates that inversions for englacial velocities will magnify measurement errors at an exponential rate with depth. The rate at which calculation errors grow is proportional to a Lyapunov exponent, a measure of “information loss” which is shown to be a simple linear function of spatial frequency with a coefficient depending on Glen’s flow-law exponent, n. The coefficient decreases with increasing non-linearity, demonstrating that inversions with non-linearly viscous ice have smaller calculation errors than inversions with linearly viscous ice. In both the linear and nonlinear cases, the Lyapunov exponent (and rate of error growth) increases with decreasing wavelength, which limits velocity calculations at the bed to wavelengths on the order of one ice thickness or greater. This limitation is theoretical and cannot be countered by more accurate survey data or special numerical techniques.

AbstractThe Swiss rutschblock test provides practical information about the stability of snow slabs. However, its use by avalanche workers and ski guides is limited by the time required to perform the test and recommended minimum slope inclination (30°). The present study shows how time requirements can be reduced by cutting rutschblocks with cords or specialized saws — faster techniques that do not appear to affect the results. Comparing the rutschblock results with a stability index developed in Switzerland shows that the recommended minimum slope inclination can be reduced to 20°, provided a second person is present to observe the small block displacements associated with slope inclinations below 30°. Sets of rutschblocks on slopes that vary in inclination by 8° or more are used to determine the effect of slope inclination on rutschblock scores. Also, the frequency distributions of six large sets of repeated tests are used to estimate the precision of one or two tests on a uniform slope.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the causes, processes of writer’s block experienced by a group of classroom teacher candidates and its impact on them. Design/methodology/approach The phenomenological design, which is a qualitative research design, was preferred in the research since it was aimed to investigate the causes, processes of writer’s block experienced by a group of classroom teacher candidates and its effects on the students. Findings As a result of the data analysis, it is possible to suggest the limitations of subject and time, problems in the process of writing teaching since primary school, anxiety of being controlled and assessed by grades, fear of being criticized, negativity of classroom settings, lack of information about writing, not being able to read and shortcomings in the vocabulary as the causes of writer’s block. Research limitations/implications The research has some limitations. First, the research is only in the phenomenology design. Quantitative research is needed to determine the more common effects of outcomes. The other one is a limitation on the participants. A group of adult teacher candidates constitute the participants of this research. Writer’s block of students at different age levels can be examined longitudinally. Nevertheless, the results of the research have the theoretical implications for teaching writing. It specifically guides to understand and eliminate negative affective factors related to writing. Practical implications The results of this research have practical implications in terms of classroom practices. The results of the study show that there are practical implications for what should be considered in classroom writing teaching and to prevent the writer’s block. Originality/value Writer’s block is an affective state and the examination of it is important in terms of writing instruction. Many students suffer from writer’s block. However, this subject is neglected by writing researchers and educators. The authors expect the results to guide teachers and writing education researchers. Because of these reasons, this study is important and gives good contribution to literature.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to understand how illusion of control (IOC) can affect the implementation of formal processes of environmental scanning in organizations. Design/methodology/approach Based on the proposed research question, an exploratory study was chosen, which could collaborate with future studies. There were conducted three semi-structured interviews with CEOs working in medium/large technology companies. Findings Behavioral traits were identified—such as overconfidence and underestimation of risks—which are directly related to the IOC’s theory. The belief that there is no added value to the company in adopting organizational strategic processes—such as environmental scanning—answers the research question and contributes to the development of new studies. Research limitations/implications This study has as limitation the fact that it proposed the interviews to an inexpressive number of respondents, exclusively with the intention to explore better the relation between the IOC and the formal processes of environmental scanning. Practical implications This research advances the understanding of the difficulty in adopting formal environmental scanning practices in organizations. It can also help understand the motivations of executives for adopting (or not adopting) such practices. Finally, it is possible to know and understand the individual approach to environmental scanning, as well as its limitations. Originality/value This research discusses the themes of IOC and environmental scanning, demonstrating how cognitive factors can affect strategic decision making in an organization. Although the IOC is well-developed in the field of psychology, it can be very helpful in understanding business management and executive behavior.

This study investigates how foreign graduate students interactwith ChatGPT, during the thesis writing process. The objective is to analyze howthese students utilize ChatGPT at various stages of academic paper writing andidentify the challenges they face. Based on these findings, the study proposeseducational strategies to help foreign students use ChatGPT more effectively. Fourforeign graduate students in A University were the subjects. The researchmethodology involved comparing and analyzing the outputs produced at differentstages of the writing process and the interactions with ChatGPT, supplemented byinterviews conducted two times to understand their experiences and perceptions. The results revealed that students primarily used ChatGPT for generating ideas,organizing content, and correcting grammar and vocabulary, confirming its utilityas a coaching tool for academic writing. However, limitations were noted whenstudents lacked a clear understanding of their research topics, hindering theeffective use of ChatGPT. Based on these results, specific strategies were proposedto enhance the utilization of generative AI in the academic paper writing processfor foreign graduate students.

Abstract. The nitrogen (N) cycle has the potential to regulate climate change through its influence on carbon (C) sequestration. Although extensive research has explored whether or not progressive N limitation (PNL) occurs under CO2 enrichment, a comprehensive assessment of the processes that regulate PNL is still lacking. Here, we quantitatively synthesized the responses of all major processes and pools in the terrestrial N cycle with meta-analysis of CO2 experimental data available in the literature. The results showed that CO2 enrichment significantly increased N sequestration in the plant and litter pools but not in the soil pool, partially supporting one of the basic assumptions in the PNL hypothesis that elevated CO2 results in more N sequestered in organic pools. However, CO2 enrichment significantly increased the N influx via biological N fixation and the loss via N2O emission, but decreased the N efflux via leaching. In addition, no general diminished CO2 fertilization effect on plant growth was observed over time up to the longest experiment of 13 years. Overall, our analyses suggest that the extra N supply by the increased biological N fixation and decreased leaching may potentially alleviate PNL under elevated CO2 conditions in spite of the increases in plant N sequestration and N2O emission. Moreover, our syntheses indicate that CO2 enrichment increases soil ammonium (NH4+) to nitrate (NO3−) ratio. The changed NH4+/NO3− ratio and subsequent biological processes may result in changes in soil microenvironments, above-belowground community structures and associated interactions, which could potentially affect the terrestrial biogeochemical cycles. In addition, our data synthesis suggests that more long-term studies, especially in regions other than temperate ones, are needed for comprehensive assessments of the PNL hypothesis.

Abstract. We examined the effect of iron (Fe) and Fe-light (Fe-L) co-limitation on cellular silica (BSi), carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) in two marine diatom species, Thalassiosira oceanica and Ditylum brightwellii. We showed that C and N per cell tend to decrease with increasing Fe and Fe-L co-limitation (i.e. decreasing growth rate). We observed an increase (T. oceanica, Fe-L co-limitation), no change (T. oceanica, Fe limitation) and a decrease (D. brightwellii, Fe and Fe-L limitations) in BSi per cell with increasing degree of limitation. When comparing our results to literature data, we noted that the trend in C and N per cell for other Fe limited diatoms was similar to ours. However there was no global trend in BSi, which suggests interspecific differences. The relative variations in C:N, Si:C and Si:N versus the relative variation in specific growth rate (i.e. μ:μmax) followed the same patterns for both species under Fe and Fe-L co-limitation. The variations of C:N under Fe limitation reported in the literature for other diatoms are contrasted, which may thus be more related to growth conditions than to interspecific differences. Si:C and Si:N ratios increased by more than 2-fold between 100% and 40% of μmax. Under more severe limitation (Fe or Fe-L), these ratios tend to decrease. To asses the field significance of our results, we compared them to those of artificial Fe fertilisation experiments. This comparison showed that Si:N increased between 100% and ~40% of μmax, but decreased between 40% and 20% of μmax, and increased again below 20% of μmax. Between ~15% and 30% of μmax, Si:N was even lower than under non limiting conditions. These results may have important biogeochemical implications on the understanding and the modeling of the oceanic biogeochemical cycles, e.g. carbon export.

Maintaining a strict gluten-free diet (GFD) may affect the quality of life of children with celiac disease (CD) and promote a less healthy diet by substituting gluten-containing foods with ultra-processed foods. We aimed to assess the influences of the GFD and ultra-processed food consumption on parents’ perception of the quality of life of children with CD. Fifty-eight children (mean age 8.6 ± 4.1 years) were included. The participants were divided into groups based on the time following a GFD: <6 months (n = 18) versus ≥12 months (n = 37). Their dietary consumption was assessed through a three-day food record. The 20-item Celiac Disease Quality Of Life survey (CD-QOL), which contains four subscales (limitations, dysphoria, health concerns, and inadequate treatment) was used to assess the quality of life. The children who followed a GFD for ≥12 months presented poorer scores in the limitations subscale than those who followed a GFD for <6 months (p = 0.010). The mean % of the energy intake from ultra-processed foods was 47.3 ± 13.5. Children with CD consuming more than 50% of their total energy from ultra-processed foods showed poorer scores for the limitation and inadequate treatment (both, p = 0.019) subscales than their counterparts. According to parents’ perceptions, those children who consumed more than 50% of their energy through ultra-processed foods had more limitations, and their treatment was perceived as less effective.
