The creation of a highly detailed on-line catalogue of Walter Scott’s Library at Abbotsford has made it possible for the first time, not only to see exactly what items Scott collected, but also in many cases to determine when and how he acquired them. If, as Alberto Manguel has claimed, all libraries are autobiographical, what does this enhanced information about Abbotsford Library tells us about Scott? Five distinct topics have been selected for examination: Americana, Ireland, Science, Politics and Bibliography. They have been chosen because, although they are for the most part not subjects frequently connected with Scott, they are nonetheless areas on which he collected a substantial amount of books or manuscripts, and for which substantive information about his involvement or interest can be deduced from external sources such as his Journal or correspondence. In addition to the investigation of these specific subject areas, the collection as a whole is explored for evidence for Scott’s personal relationships, both with other writers and with members of his family, focussing especially on his collections of Burns and Byron, the commonplace book he kept as a young man, and his own marginalia. Evidence concerning Scott’s final book purchases is surveyed against the conflicting accounts of his mental and physical health in 1831/2 as given by J. G. Lockhart, William Gell, and other contemporary observers, and an account of the afterlife of the Library traces its history from Scott’s death to the present day to examine how closely the present arrangement of the books resembles that intended by Scott, and whether changes which took place after his death could mislead us into drawing incorrect conclusions. Finally a description of the twenty-first century cataloguing process with some statistical analysis of the contents of the Library examines the importance of the holdings to ask if this is a significant collection, even without the provenance of one of the most popular and prolific writers of the Romantic Era, and whether Scott’s influence on nineteenth-century book culture is one of his most important contributions to modern scholarship.

This dissertation is an investigation into the social history of British Library Manuscript Additional 35157 (hereafter Add.35157), which is a late fourteenth-century copy of William Langland's alliterative poem Piers Plowman. Part one contains the text of the dissertation. In chapter 1 a general outline of the dissertation is provided and some bibliographical issues relating to the identification of Add.35157 are discussed. Chapter 2 proposes that the knowledge of a manuscript's provenance is itself a legitimate goal of research. Chapter 2 also provides a sample exercise in manuscript research using a copy of John Lydgate's poem Life of Our Lady from the University of Glasgow's Hunterian Collection. Chapter 3 forwards a classification system for manuscript marginalia and explains how some of the classification arose. Chapter 4 discusses issues related to the codicology of Add.35157, suggests a new date for the manuscript's construction, discusses the work of its scribes and provides several new catalogue descriptions of the manuscript. Chapters 5 through 8 analyse the contributions and detail the biographies of four of Add.35157's owners or commentators. Chapter 9 concludes that there is much to be learned from the continued study of the social history of medieval manuscripts. Part two comprises fourteen appendices, includes an edition of Add.35157's marginal supply, surveys of its dialect, transcriptions of its text and reproductions of selected folios.

This thesis presents an oral history of the Advocates for Indigenous California Language Survival (AICLS) and its Breath of Life Workshop. Held every other year since 1996, the workshop is designed to meet the language revitalization needs of California Indian people whose languages have no living fluent speakers. Breath of Life Workshop organizers arrange visits to four archives on the University of California, Berkeley, campus and connect participants with linguistic mentors to read and interpret archival documents in their language for the purpose of bringing their language back into use.

Through interviews with AICLS founders, Breath of Life Workshop participants, and University of California, Berkeley, linguists and archivists, this study uncovers the role archivists play in the Breath of Life Workshops and in the care of Native language collections more generally. Topics addressed include the selection and use of archival documents in the program and the changes to archival practice and policies that have resulted from archivists’ work with Breath of Life participants. The thesis also examines issues involved in the collection, arrangement, description, preservation, and access to the documentation of California Indian languages. The study concludes with recommendations for future language revitalization programs.

This study explored public library provision to the Tamil Community in Singapore using a focus group methodology. Results of the study were analysed and implications for the library services for the Tamil community in Singapore outlined. Improvement is needed in collections, facilities, programming and services, particularly in the area of provision to young people. Among other suggestions, the participants proposed an Internet portal in Tamil. Many indicated that the library could help in promoting the usage of Tamil language in Singapore through facilitating the reading and use of the Tamil language. Participants perceived this as vital to preserve the Tamil culture in Singapore and ensure its survival as part of the country’s unique cultural heritage in the future. The Tamil language among the other Indian languages has been given official status in Singapore, and this recognition of Tamil as a national language has given the Tamils intrinsic satisfaction. The language provides them with a living link to their ethnic culture. They believe the library can help them regain their cultural identities and also assist them in repositioning themselves well in Singaporean society. The contribution of this study to the professional literature is the idea of cultural identity being central in public library services to special user groups.

This is a study of William Burkitt (1650-1703), Vicar and Lecturer of Dedham; his life, library and legacy. A son of an ejected Puritan minister, Burkitt became a conforming Reformed clergyman of the Church of England. This thesis examines the part that patrimony and education played in Burkitt's formation, ministry and legacy to consider why he became known for his moderation, tolerance and charity. Burkitt bequeathed a large parochial library which remained intact for two centuries before being dispersed. Historians of the book and historical bibliographers have mourned not only its loss but that what was lost became unknown. Re-discovered bibliographical manuscripts have been used to create a catalogue of what once existed. Other manuscripts by Burkitt are here given scholarly consideration for the first time; through this the academic and spiritual hinterland of his times will be better seen. Local and particular in approach, yet a kind of 'qualitative change' will be seen here with greater clarity. Burkitt wrote books that were among the most widely read in Britain and North America during the first century after his death. Now largely forgotten, even by students of early modem history, this thesis examines how Burkitt's books were once valued, considers why they fell from favour, and reflects on whether such amnesia is deserved. Reformed parochial clergy have been considered to have had only a marginal effect upon the Church in the latter part of the seventeenth century; this thesis challenges that assumption, offering a fresh insight into the importance of such ministers during these years. From all the divisions, conflicts and disasters of the period, England emerged a stronger and more confident nation. This thesis, with a magnification of Burkitt's ministry and its changes and continuities on the Essex-Suffolk border, will help to show how such transformation was made possible.

This thesis examines the life and career of Kate Foley, home teacher of the blind with the California State Library from 1914–1940. The purpose of this investigation is to determine how Foley, who was disabled, built a successful career with the state library despite facing significant discrimination and prejudice. Using a wide variety of primary source material, including letters, library publications, conference proceedings, newspaper articles, and census data, this biography evaluates Foley’s pioneering role as well as the challenges she faced. Home teaching provided a new vocational opportunity for blind women, whose professional choices were extremely limited. Despite her unique career, the extensive contributions she made, and the fact that she was lauded upon her death as a pioneer and asset to the State of California, Foley’s life has been largely ignored in the historical literature. This biography remedies the omission, drawing upon the history of library services, the history of disability, women’s history, the history of Progressive Era California, and the history of state and federal welfare systems to provide context for her life and achievements. Chapters include discussions of the cause of Foley’s blindness, her education at the California School for the Blind, her volunteer teaching work, her career with the California State Library, the early organized blind movement, and the development of social services for blind individuals.

The thesis focuses on four main areas of interest. Through ethnographic description and analysis, the research explored those elements of the public library which account for its 'libraryness'; the inherent appeal of the service which makes it an attractive and valued social space for those who frequent it. The second area centres round the ways the library is organised and used, and the techniques by which its success is judged. This enables an exploration of what counts as library provision and the ways in which, as a public policy arena, the library is made accountable and auditable. The third area is the library as a public and community space; the ways a branch library is used for social interaction and how these account, in part, for the library service's appeal as a space for participation and engagement. Finally, the research reflects on contemporary policy debates in the library service, specifically how the service uses and promotes itself and its services, and the tensions between (and meanings of) educational, recreational and cultural uses of the public library.

E-books have seen a significant proliferation over recent years. In the UK, about a third of the population today owns an e-reader with about half either owning an e-reader or tablet. Nevertheless, only about 4% of readers have moved to reading e-books only. These numbers suggest that, while e-books have caught on among a large number of users, they seem to complement rather than replace books. In light of the significance of books to past and contemporary cultures and societies it is little surprising that the emergence of e-reading technologies has sparked a plethora of writing on the topic, particularly in journalism and the humanities. With a common focus on the relative merits of books and e-books, and ultimately, their respective futures (some writers go as far as either mourning or celebrating the death of the book), the debate largely suffers from a technological determinist stance, neglecting the role of social practice as a driving force in technology adoption and use. Regardless, the sheer volume of the discourse suggests that something important is at stake in the move from analogue to digital reading technologies and that books continue to be valued as physical artefacts in the digital age, if not with more fervour than ever. What is surprising then is the lack of empirical research aiming to understand how books and e-books are used and valued in everyday life. Existing work in the area is almost exclusively concerned with practices of reading, with a particular emphasis on reading in academic and professional environments, thereby not only disregarding the social and material nature of reading, but also the rich life of the book beyond its role as a reading technology. The aim of this thesis then is to provide an understanding of the practices and values surrounding books and e-books in everyday life. Based on this understanding, it further aims to explore alternatives to the current e-reading ecosystem through designs that are sensitive to some of the broader values people associate with books and e-books. To do so, it takes a situated approach to studying books and e-books as they are used over the course of their lifecycle inside and outside the home. Through a combination of a series of in-depth interviews, guided ‘home tours’, and participant diaries ‘context-rich’ data on people’s uses of, and orientations towards, books and e-books are gathered. Subsequently, design responses are iteratively developed before being returned to readers for analysis. The contribution of this thesis is fourfold: (1) an account of the socially and materially situated practices associated with books and e-books inside and outside the home, (2) an explication of the distinct, yet complementary, values reflected in and driving book and e-books use, (3) an explication of the ways in which developing a sense of self and connecting with others are actualized through the use of books and e-books, and (3) the development and in situ analysis of a design exemplar in support of these goals.

When the instructor guides the class to find unbiased information from newspapers, many students begin to think critically about sources.

Aim of study: The purpose of this study is to investigate the current knowledge management status within the Academic Information Service at the University of Pretoria. Research method: A literature study was conducted to establish the nature and value of knowledge management for organizations. A questionnaire was used to obtain reliable information with regard to the current value and nature of knowledge management within the Academic Information Service at the University of Pretoria. Core findings: Within an academic library like the Academic Information Service at Pretoria, there exist a certain misconception that libraries are already doing knowledge management for years. The management of knowledge for clients, and providing knowledge and information to the client are seen as knowledge management. It was indicated that within the Academic Information Service there is not much attention given to the management of tacit knowledge within the organization. This shows that libraries aren’t doing knowledge management for years. They are doing explicit management of knowledge but not tacit management of organizational knowledge. Within this study it is stressed why this tacit knowledge is so important for an organization to exist and compete within these turbulent times we live in. The academic information service is not managing their tacit knowledge to the fullest potential and for benefit of the organization. There is no culture or incentives conducive to knowledge sharing within the library. The existing technology namely the intranet and portal aren’t re ally enablers for knowledge management. There exist a lot of barriers to knowledge management within the AIS that should be attended to. A knowledge management strategy is suggested with a lot of shifts in connection to the culture of the organization, incentives and information technology.

In 2008, Sherrod Library purchased Springshare’s LibGuides to create research guides for the library’s homepage. We also created LibGuides for individual classes when we taught library instruction sessions. Several of our professors worked closely with librarians to create the LibGuides for their classes, and those guides are heavily used. Inspired by this success, we looked for other ways to use LibGuides to connect with our faculty, students, and community. Our most creative use of LibGuides happened in 2013 when several librarians approached carefully-chosen faculty with an invitation to participate in a pilot project. We chose among the professors who routinely requested library instruction sessions; seemed to be open to trying new ways to engage their students; and whose classes were small and not writing intensive. These three professors were invited to a meeting where we offered them the opportunity to replace their traditional written paper with a LibGuide assignment. We explained that students will still have to do quality research to produce a good LibGuide and suggested that there are a number of benefits from replacing a written paper with a LibGuide assignment, including: • the replacement of an assignment that students don’t look forward to writing and professors don’t look forward to grading with a more engaging assignment; • the ability to engage students by assigning a robust research project using a flexible tool that is easy to use; • the creation of an electronic resource that students can easily include in an electronic portfolio. This presentation describes the pilot project.

e-Research in the Life Sciences examines the use of online tools in the life sciences and finds that their use has significant impact, namely the formation of a Scientific/Intellectual Movement (SIM) (Frickel & Gross, 2005) complemented by a Computerisation Movement (CM) (Kling & Iacono, 1994) which is mobilising global electronic resources to form visible colleges of life science researchers, who are enrolling others and successfully promoting their open science goals via mainstream scientific literature. Those within this movement are also using these online tools to change their work practices, producing scientific knowledge in a highly networked and distributed group which has less regard for traditional institutional and disciplinary boundaries. This thesis, by combining ideas about SIMs and CMs, fills a gap in research that is typically confined to treating new tools as a part of scientific communication or in specialist areas like distributed collaboration but not in terms of broader changes in science. Case studies have been conducted for three types of online tools: the scientific social networking tool FriendFeed, open laboratory notebooks, and science blogs. Data have been collected from semi-structured interviews, and the online writings of research participants. The case studies of exemplary use by scientists of the web form a baseline for future studies in the area. Boundaries between formal and informal scholarly communication are now blurred. At the formal level, which peer-reviewed print journals continue, many academic publishers now also have online open access, frequently in advance of print publication. At the informal level, what used to be confined to water-cooler chat and the conference circuit is now also discussed on mailing lists, forums and blogs (Borgman, 2007). As these online tools generate new practices they have potential to affect future academic assessment and dissemination practices.

This thesis interprets The Book of Margery Kempe using a medieval medical approach. Through an interdisciplinary methodology based on a medical humanities framework, the thesis explores the significance of Kempe’s painful experiences through a broad survey of the human life cycle, as understood in medieval culture. In exploring the interplay of humoral theory, medical texts, religious instruction and life cycle taxonomies, it illustrates the porousness of medicine and religion in the Middle Ages and the symbiotic relationship between spiritual and corporeal health. In an age when the circulation of medical texts in the English vernacular was increasing, scholastic medicine not only infiltrated religious houses but also translated into lay praxis. Ideas about the moral and physical nature of the human body were thus inextricably linked, based on the popular tradition of Christus medicus. For this reason, the thesis argues that Margery Kempe’s pain, experience and controversial performances amongst her euen-cristen were interpreted in physiological and medical terms by her onlookers, as ‘pain-interpreters’. It also offers a new transcription of the recipe from B.L. Add. MS 61823, f.124v, and argues for its importance as a way of reading the text as an ‘illness narrative’ which depicts Margery Kempe’s spiritual journey from sickness to health. The chapters examine Kempe’s humoral constitution and predisposition to mystical perceptivity, her crying, her childbearing and married years, her menopausal middle age of surrogate reproductivity, and her elderly life stage. Medical texts such as the Trotula, the Sekenesse of Wymmen and the Liber Diversis Medicinis help to shed light on the ways in which medieval women’s bodies were understood. The thesis concludes that, via a ‘pain surrogacy’ hermeneutic, Kempe is brought closer to a knowledge of pain which is transformational, just as she transforms through the stages of the life cycle.

This study examines the role public libraries play in creating social capital within communities. Two sets of public libraries were selected based on their being geographically located in areas of high or low social capital. These libraries were then contacted by phone to determine whether they had wireless Internet or a café on the premises. Libraries which possessed these traits were totaled according to their level of social capital. The data was then compared to population and circulation information for the areas served by each library or library system. The results indicate that having a café and/or wireless Internet can significantly impact a community’s use of the library, though in some cases this relationship is weaker.

Interactivity research lacks consensus regarding the qualities and consequences of interactive experiences. Empirical proof is needed to substantiate the numerous interactivity theories and provide direction for new media technology developers. Specifically, there is a shortage of research on differences between user experiences of interactivity when technology enables communication versus when it does not. In addition, interactivity research is often confounded by the construct of presence. This study’s objectives included: 1) identifying qualities associated with interactive experiences; 2) disambiguating the constructs of interactivity and presence; and 3) developing a measure of perceived interactivity for VW research. The experimental design measured perceived interactivity and presence following completion of a simple task in the online Virtual World (VW) known as Second Life. It was hypothesized that both perceived interactivity and presence would be greater for subjects encountering avatars believed to be controlled by other people than for subjects encountering no other avatars in the VW. A total of 180 subjects from the University of Kentucky participated in a 2 by 4 factorial experiment. Perceived interactivity was measured by modifying McMillan and Hwang’s Measure of Perceived Interactivity for the VW context. Two essential qualities of interactive experiences were identified: Responsiveness and engagement. These qualities are characteristic of unmediated, FTF conversation, which was perceived as the most interactive communication context above technologies routinely described as interactive. Decreased responsiveness of technology at a second study venue caused significant decline in perceived interactivity, demonstrating the importance of a technology’s reaction speed and control provided to the user. Significant main effects for perceived interactivity due to encountering other avatars were confounded by interaction effects due to differences in technology responsiveness. Interactivity and presence appear to be separate psychological constructs which covary in the context of a new media experience. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.

While development in flies is well understood, pattem formation and the evolution thereof in arachnids have yet to be clarified. Flies and other metazoans primarily use two families of genes called Hox genes and Pax genes to regulate embryogenesis. Because of the high evolutionary conservation of Hox and Pax proteins, I hypothesize that arachnids also use this system to organize their body pattern. To enable studies of the Westem black widow spider, Latrodectus hesperus, an embryonic eDNA library and a fixation protocol were developed for L. hesperus embryos. The generation of these tools will allow comprehensive analysis of black widow spider development and give insight into whether, and how, spiders use Hox and Pax genes to organize their bodies. Finally, it will provide a more thorough understanding of how different developmental mechanisms have evolved and ultimately how changes in gene expression can lead to a change in overall body plan.

Peptide libraries are important in peptide based drug discovery and investigations of biological targets. Different chemical and biological methods have been developed to screen and decode peptide libraries. mRNA display technology is a biological method that utilizes in vitro translation systems to build peptide libraries, and the screened peptides are decoded by their covalently attached oligonucleotide templates. Like other biological methods, mRNA display technology can generate peptide libraries with high fidelity and speed but the chemical repertoire is limited mostly to natural amino acids. Our research goal is to expand the chemical repertoire of mRNA display technology by using it in combination with an in vitro reconstituted translation system, and build peptides containing stabilizing chemical features such as N-methyl amino acids that would make peptides more proteolytic resistant and drug-like. Using a streptavidin-dependent gel shift assay, the unnatural amino acids, N-methyl-L-alanine, N-methyl-L-glutamate, N-methyl-L-ornithine, L-abrine, t-butyl-L-glycine, biocytin, and sarcosine were shown to be able to incorporate successively into hexa-peptides in the mRNA display format. The peptides containing unnatural amino acids were shown to be more resistant to proteinase K proteolysis than peptides containing only the natural amino acid L-alanine. Several mRNA libraries were made in accordance with the mRNA display format. Repeated E. coli in vitro reconstituted translations of these mRNA libraries with varying translation conditions fail to yield peptides of significant lengths. However, a library of tetra-peptides was synthesized in the absence of mRNA display format. Thus, the puromycin linker required by mRNA display technology seemed to interfere with proper translations in the E. coli in vitro reconstituted translation system. Experiments showed that E. coli in vitro reconstituted translation system is slow at making full-length peptides in the context of mRNA display technology and a majority of products are prematurely terminated translation products, which could be due to slow peptidyl formation in the E. coli in vitro reconstituted translation system, or the result of undesirable interaction between the E. coli ribosome and puromycin linker that interfere with normal translation. This slow translation kinetic issue needs to be addressed with further experiments in order to successfully pursue the development of this technology.

The theme of this project was synthesis and the thesis encompasses knowledge generation and knowledge translation. Systematic review methodology was employed. The initial two systematic reviews compared antidepressant medication and cognitive-behaviour therapy for the acute treatment of depression. A further comparison of a combination of the two interventions with each treatment on its own was also conducted, with the bulk of the evidence favouring the psychotherapy. Moving to the topic of knowledge translation, the main theme of the thesis, the barriers, facilitators, and interventions impacting on systematic review uptake were identified. The evidence from these three systematic reviews, using diverse methodologies, was then combined to identify the interventions that overcame specific obstacles and built on highlighted facilitators in order to improve the uptake of evidence from systematic reviews. Juxtaposing barriers and facilitators alongside effectiveness studies in this final, mixed-methods systematic review allowed a number of interventions to be recommended. The synthesis also allowed strategies to be highlighted that required further development. Interventions with a statistically significant effect such as educational visits, summaries of systematic reviews, and targeted messaging, addressed a wide range of the identified barriers and facilitators. These interventions were recommended. Promising uptake strategies requiring further development were also identified. Furthermore, large gaps in the evidence base regarding systematic review utilization were highlighted. Fewer of the facilitators identified as part of this project, such as the medico-legal protection provided by systematic reviews, appear to have been built on in order to increase review uptake. Finally, all the preceding evidence was drawn on in order to develop a proposal focused on improving the uptake of evidence from systematic reviews and meta-analyses. This doctoral project offers a menu or range of evidence-based factors that can be considered by organisations and researchers when planning strategies aimed at increasing the uptake of pre-appraised, synthesized evidence.

Scholarship of the anonymous Old English prose Life of St. Mary of Egypt ranges from source studies and linguistic analyses to explorations of Anglo-Saxon female sexuality and comparisons to saints' lives translated by the monk Ælfric, but all of these studies have been based on either the text extant in BL MS Cotton Julius E. vii or on W. W. Skeat's edition of the Julius manuscript, Ælfric's Lives of Saints (1881-1900). There is, however, an as yet unedited fragmentary copy of the Old English Mary of Egypt in BL MS Cotton Otho B. x, a manuscript severely damaged by fire in 1731. Digital imaging of damaged manuscripts in concert with ultraviolet fluorescence and other special lighting techniques has been shown to be effective for restoring the legibility of previously inaccessible texts. By means of such digital facsimiles I have transcribed the text of Mary of Egypt in Otho B. x, have collated this text with Skeat's edition, and have discovered that Otho B. x contains textual evidence not found in Julius E. vii. In this thesis, I present my findings and discuss the significance of this new textual evidence for the Old English Life of St. Mary of Egypt.

We are living within the age of information. The ever increasing flow of data and publications poses a monumental bottleneck to scientific progress as despite the amazing abilities of the human mind, it is woefully inadequate in processing such a vast quantity of multidimensional information. The small bits of flotsam and jetsam that we leverage belies the amount of useful information beneath the surface. It is imperative that automated tools exist to better search, retrieve, and summarize this content. Combinations of document indexing and search engines can quickly find you a document whose content best matches your query - if the information is all contained within a single document. But it doesn’t draw connections, make hypotheses, or find knowledge hidden across multiple documents. Literature-based discovery is an approach that can uncover hidden interrelationships between topics by extracting information from existing published scientific literature. The proposed study utilizes a semantic-based approach that builds a graph of related concepts between two user specified sets of topics using semantic predications. In addition, the study includes properties of bibliographically related documents and statistical properties of concepts to further enhance the quality of the proposed intermediate terms. Our results show an improvement in precision-recall when incorporating citations.

In the meeting between women from office- and library work and the computer technology and organizational changes, different actions were found. The purpose of the thesis is to analyse this meeting to consider the situation of the employed when computer technology and new organization are implemented, to discuss the importance of prior social and working life with regard to the understanding of the meeting and to address the working conditions in the 1980s with special attention to women. The starting point for the analysis of the meeting is an empirical study. The study uses qualitative data from interviews with 30 women. 24 women expresses criticism, 6 expresses consent, with the renewals. The analysis has three levels. At the first level the contents of the interviews are described. At the second level, from a theory of action, criticism and consent are considered for both foundations and forms of action. At the third level these forms of action are discussed in relation to a list of historical conditions for the social and working life of women generally. The thesis shows, firstly, that in the criticism and the consent there are three forms of action. These are the department-based form of action, the solidarity form and the individual form. Secondly, that in light of the socio-historical structures it becomes possible to see the three forms of action as three types of interest for development of work and organization. Thus behind both criticism and consent there is an interest in development and change. In the context of the socio-historical perspectives this interest is emphasized. The thesis shows, thirdly, that both the hopes and the disappointments of womens prior working life are reproduced in the 1980s. Lastly, that the forms of action and the types of interest reflect the limited possibilities for women in the female-occupations to change their position in the working life.

Molecular recognition plays an essential role in the self-assembly and self-organisation of biological and chemical systems alike—allowing individual components to form complex interconnected networks. Within these systems, the nature of the recognition and reactive processes determines their functional and structural properties, and even small changes in their identity or orientation can exert a dramatic effect on the observed properties. The rapidly developing field of systems chemistry aims to move away from the established paradigm in which molecules are studied in isolation, towards the study of networks of molecules that interact and react with each other. Taking inspiration from complex natural systems, where recognition processes never operate in isolation, systems chemistry aims to study chemical networks with the view to examining the system-level properties that arise from the interactions and reactions between the components within these systems. The work presented in this thesis aims to advance the nascent field of systems chemistry by bringing together small organic molecules that can react and interact together to form interconnected networks, exhibiting complex behaviour, such as self-replication, as a result. Three simple building blocks are used to construct a network of two structurally similar replicators and their kinetic behaviour is probed through a comprehensive kinetic analysis. The selectivity for one of the recognition-mediated reactive processes over another is examined within the network in isolation as well as in a scenario where the network is embedded within a pool of exchanging components. The interconnected, two-replicator network is examined under far-from-equilibrium reaction-diffusion conditions, showing that chemical replicating networks can exhibit signs of selective replication—a complex phenomenon normally associated with biological systems. Finally, a design of a well-characterised replicator is exploited for the construction of a network integrating self-replication with a another recognition-directed process, leading to the formation of a mechanically-interlocked architecture—a [2]rotaxane.

The question of how the Internet affects existing geo-cultural or geo-linguistic communities in relation to nation-states has continued to receive attention among academics and policymakers alike. Language-based technologies and services that aggregate, index, and distribute materials online may reshape pre-existing boundaries of the relationship between users and content, for instance with different language versions of user-generated encyclopaedias or different local versions of search engines. By comparing two major Chinese online encyclopaedias, Baidu Baike and Chinese Wikipedia, this thesis investigates whether the Internet overcomes, shifts, or reinforces boundaries among Chinese language users. The Chinese language provides an excellent case for examining the boundary question. While the Internet can potentially connect the largest number of native speakers around the world, the majority (i.e. those from mainland China) face an Internet censorship and filtering regime that may limit this very potential. Modern Chinese history has also complicated the cultural-political boundaries among the regions of mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. This thesis compares the conditions and outcomes of their respective editorial processes, content features, and users’ reception. Multiple findings emerge from a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, including content analysis, webometrics, and search engine result visibility tests. These methods show that boundaries are drawn in the process of creating, linking, and searching content on the Chinese Internet. Their geolinguistic extent differs, a phenomenon that reflects the cultural-political division between mainland China and the rest of Chinese-speaking world. Both the findings and methods of the thesis have important implications for research and policy for understanding the globalizing regionalization and nationalization effects of the Internet.

Introduction. The concept of emotional labour can be described as the strategies used to express emotions required of a job, and the strategies used to suppress those emotions that are inappropriate in the workplace. This paper aims to examine the emotional labour of Swedish high school librarians. Method. For this study, six high school librarians were interviewed about emotional situations in the workplace and how they handle their emotions. The interview transcripts were analysed thematically, using QDA Miner Lite software. Analysis and results. Emotional labour theories and role theory were used to understand the librarians' emotional labour. The findings show that emotional labour occurs in interactions with students, teachers/colleagues and managers. Situations that require emotional labour include students that make a racket in the library, students in need of support in personal matters and challenges of instructional work. However, the most prominent theme concerns teachers/colleagues and managers who do not have accurate knowledge of the librarians' competencies. The librararians use deep and surface acting strategies to handle their emotions, as well as situation modification, situation selection and venting. These strategies are used both during interaction and before/after (outside of) situations. Conclusion. Interactions with students are not the primary cause of the librarians' emotional labour. Rather, the main reason for emotional labour is managers' and colleagues' limited knowledge of school library work and the competencies of school librarians. One effect of this limited knowledge is that the librarians do not always get the opportunity to practice their competence. Another effect is the risk that the students do not get equal access to the librarys' and the librarians' services – in turn, the risk of this inequality affects the librarians' emotional health negatively. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

This qualitative study investigated the nature of people's everyday information experience in using mobile devices for health and wellness. Participants discussed how they use their mobile devices (such as smartphones, tablet computers and wearable technologies) for everyday self-care rather than institutional healthcare. The constructivist grounded theory developed through this study titled Going mobile for health and wellness consists of five interrelated categories of experience: Knowing myself; Feeling connected; Facing uncertainty; Doing my own research; and Motivating myself. The findings present an unconventional yet faithful view of information as experienced by participants beyond the traditional notions of information seeking and retrieval.
