t allow the handling of urban archaeological resources, especially invisible sub-soil resources, into planning and decision-making process. In this thesis, it is aimed to formulate a basic methodological framework for the handling of urban archaeological resources into planning process of historic city centres in Turkey. Therefore, the study is handled in two parts
a conceptual methodological framework part and an exploratory case study. In the conceptual part, a basic equation is studied to research the factors on the conservation and evaluation of real urban archaeological potential. Then, the methodological framework is examined in detail in izmir Historic City Centre that has been inhabited since 324 B.C. Consequently, the terms of equi-property areas, which are used to define ideal potential of archaeological resources, and urban archaeological character zones, which are described as the basic units of planning and conservation policies, are developed to determine exact management strategies for urban archaeological resources.

Повний текст джерелаThe travels of African students in a colonial situation are a recurring subject in Frenchspeaking African literature of the 1950s. At the time of de-colonial, political and ideological struggles, some writers such as Cheikh Hamidou Kane, Camara Laye or Aké Loba have put the experience of cultural colonization at the heart of their literary work. Their writings, aboutthe study trips of the main characters to France, are based on a spatial and existential isotopy: a dead-end migration, based on many betrayed promises, dreams with broken perspectives, experiences of deathly dereliction. The study of the literary device of the progressive disenchantment of these characters – African, colonized students – allows to shed light on thesubjectivation process that shapes their barred horizons. Indeed, the ideological deceit of the colonial endeavor hides a movement of existential capture that grabs the character and makes them subjects of domination. Since the turning point of political independencies, the literary outlook on those failed adventures keeps interrogating our present times. These beings, stretched between spaces and universes of opposed values, question the negotiation of postcolonial identities. As if, by entering the mold of the colonized character, by going to meet its mechanisms and models, we had an appointment with the modern-day shapes of their globalized development
Zaarour, Suzanne. "Le théâtre de Sarraute : polyphonie et énonciation." Thesis, Dijon, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014DIJOL032/document.
Повний текст джерелаThe corpus is formed of six plays of Nathalie Sarraute; it hides a duplication of enunciation types in the characters’ dialogue. This duplication is latent due to personal pronouns and verb tenses’ neutralization. The transition from an enunciation layer to another is not marked at all or not traditionally marked. Therefore, deciphering will be more complicated to any reader, listener or spectator. These works of art are also highly polyphonic in terms of enunciation as in semantics, as several voices are intertwined and as the characters resort to authorities of point of view. Thus, readers, listeners and spectators should identify enunciation sources and “other” authorities of point of view to distinguish them from the original voices and to know what their contribution to the plays is. Even some speeches are reported and, predominately repeated as direct speech. Therefore, enunciation layers and enunciators are multiplied. We can also notice other voices in plays, as the author’s through what is called “stage directions” and other parts of the texts, the practitioners’ and the director’s through the performance
Reynard, Jerome Peter. "The unidentified long bone fragments from the middle stone age Still Bay layers at Blombos Cave, Southern Cape, South Africa." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/11398.
Повний текст джерелаThe aim of this investigation was to explore the relationship between the unidentified and identified fauna from the Still Bay period at Blombos Cave between ca. 77 and 72 ka. The size, breakage patterns and surface modifications of unidentified long bone fragments from the M1 and upper M2 phases were analysed. The results of the analyses were then compared to a sample of faunal remains identified by Klein (Henshilwood et al. 2001b) and Thompson (2008) from the Still Bay layers at Blombos Cave. The length of each fragment was measured to ascertain the degree of fragmentation of the assemblage. Long bone fragments generally become slightly shorter with increasing depth. This may be because smaller fauna are relatively more prevalent in the deeper layers. Cortical thickness of the bone fragments was measured and grouped into small, medium and large categories. These categories were correlated to Brain‟s (1974a) bovid size classes to investigate whether the unidentified faunal remains mimic the identified bone sample in terms of animal size. While small-sized fauna dominate the identified archaeofaunal assemblages at Blombos Cave, the cortical thickness of unidentified long bone fragments suggest that medium-sized fauna was more common. The breakage pattern of each fragment was assessed, indicating that the majority of specimens exhibited spiral fractures. Burning is more common in the unidentified faunal sample than in the identified sample and may have resulted in the relatively low frequencies of cut-marked and percussion-marked fragments. Polished bone fragments may also be a consequence of burning, abrasion or compaction, though its prevalence in the upper M2 with formal bone tools suggests that it was the result of human activities. Higher bone fragment densities in the upper layers at Blombos Cave suggests that changes in human occupation and faunal density patterns during the Still Bay at Blombos Cave may relate to environmental conditions.

Повний текст джерелаThroughout history, people have remembered their past through the dissemination of knowledge from one generation to the next. This transfer of ideas, history, culture and identity allows for the continuation of narrative to transcend the bounds of time and contribute to a rich memory landscape, that cultivates a unified perception of community memory. This is in turn, directly translated into the physical landscape. Architecture becomes the physical attribute of shared identity, and creates spaces where new memories can be made and the past, remembered. This idea of remembering and creating contextual memory is thus relevant to all people and communities, as it is a core principle in creating consensual outlooks. This premise permeates into the exploration that memory, as a passive device of remembering and an active node of creation and education, is a unifying agent within a community and is directly related to the surrounding architectural space. Cultivating the question of whether there is a correlation between memory and the architectural spaces in which it is created, and to what extent they influence each other? The investigation examines the various facets of memory and recall processes that affect the architectural landscape and in turn shape human perceptions surrounding it. This interplay between memory, architectural memory and human memory is a layered discourse that ultimately resulted in the finding that architecture and memory are linked in the way people remember and use space. The historically rich memory landscape of Fordsburg became the apt site choice which allowed these ideas to grow into an architectural response. This culminated into the idea of combining preschool and exhibition typologies, with specific allowances for photographic and community spaces. These programmes were unified through their relation to memory and the spaces in which they occur. The aim was to unify these programmes and create a space which encouraged learning and community integration, whilst commemorating the history and memory of the past in a dynamic and linked manner. The building aims at creating a positive architectural addition to Fordsburg by addressing the need for education within the community, whilst architecturally responding to facets of the past through the adaptation of the Lilian Road Art Studios, creating a palimpsest of built fabric that speaks to the continuation of memory making in architectural environments. This investigation and resulting building have demonstrated that architecture and memory are linked, and although this may not be the only way to link the two in a manner that speaks to the past, present and future is a response that amply describes the parameters in which they can occur.

Byrne, Shane. "History and Current Processes of the Martian Polar Layered Deposits." Thesis, 2003. https://thesis.library.caltech.edu/2232/1/thesis.pdf.
Повний текст джерелаThe Martian polar layered deposits constitute a detailed record of geologically recent environmental conditions. In this thesis I examine processes that have affected this history over timescales ranging from ≈10² to ≈10⁷ Martian years. To complete the work in this thesis I developed a geographic database of the Martian polar regions to enable comparisons of different datasets spread over different missions.
I report on the discovery of a large sand rich unit underlying the northern polar layered deposits. The presence of this unit suggests there once existed a radically different polar environment where there was no polar cap. A major new question now arises of where that water went during this time period and how the old polar cap (if there was one) was removed.
I describe analysis and modeling of evolving landforms on the southern residual CO₂ cap. This modeling suggests that these landforms are underlain by a water ice layer. THEMIS observations were used to confirm this hypothesis. This limits the size of the residual CO₂ cap reservoir to no more than 5% of the current atmosphere, which puts an important constraint on models of atmospheric evolution. Analysis of the size distribution coupled with this modeling indicates a uniform age for a large group of these features, implying some environmental change on the order of Martian centuries ago.
I examined geomorphologic evidence for flow processes at the margin of the south polar layered deposits. Indications of multiple episodes of previous flow are seen. However much evidence of brittle processes such as faulting, slumping and landsliding is also present. This leads to the conclusion that, during some periods, flow of the layered deposits is incapable of relieving the gravitationally generated stresses within the ice sheet. The evidence suggests that periods where flow was possible occurred intermittently and were separated by periods in which sublimation-based retreat of the ice dominated.

Повний текст джерелаThis film research-creation project focuses on the history of a former mining town. In 1971, a landslide triggered by the excavations of the adjacent mine swept part of the town of Asbestos – and its history – to the bottom of the pit. This symbolic incident serves as the basis for an exploration of how best to represent collective memory in film. In eschewing the archival approach of documentary cinema (using images and audio recordings from the past), I have tried to show what has disappeared from the town’s physical landscape yet is still very present in the memory of its inhabitants. My project is underpinned by three main questions: 1) Can Asbestos’s past be evoked through images of its current landscape? 2) Could capturing the spoken words of its inhabitants be the best way to bring a community’s experiences back to life and share them with others? 3) Can a bygone past be revealed through the interplay of present images and vernacular accounts of recent or distant history?
