One of the fundamental debates about our experience of lightness and color involves their representational format. Some theories assert that the visual system decomposes the input into a layered representation of separated causes, whereas other theories do not. This chapter presents a variety of phenomena that directly demonstrate that layered image decompositions can play a causal role in our experience of lightness and color and discusses the theoretical implications and unresolved issues that are raised by these effects. The issue of the relationship between transparency and occlusion is discussed, as is relevance of the transparency phenomena to the problem of lightness and color perception more generally, which is an ongoing research problem and unresolved issue.

The governance of international financial institutions has been a subject of debate for decades. The major issues have been the control of existing institutions by the major developed countries, the associated exclusion of developing countries from decision-making, and the tendency of major decisions to be taken by ad hoc groupings of major developed countries outside the framework of treaty-based organizations. This chapter therefore proposes a reformed architecture of the international monetary system based on three pillars. The first is a representative apex organization, which can be understood as a transformation of the G20 into a representative international institution. The second is the continuous reform of ‘voice and participation’ of developing countries in the Bretton Woods institutions and global regulatory bodies. The third is the design of a dense, multi-layered architecture, with the contribution of regional and sub-regional institutions, mirroring the denser architecture that characterizes the system of multilateral development banks.

This chapter presents a case study of the construction of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The approach to systems integration used to deliver London 2012 addressed the two levels of complexity associated with this megaproject. Prime contractors were appointed to manage each individual system as separate project (such as the Olympic Stadium and Velodrome), and the task of integrating the entire collection of systems and engaging with multiple stakeholders was performed jointly by the client and its delivery partner. The chapter provides a brief review of the systems integration and project management literature, and identifies the layered structure of systems integration used to manage London 2012. It also considers what we can learn about the wider role of systems integration in megaproject management, and concludes by suggesting some promising avenues for future research.

It is clear that the current crisis of the EU is not confined to the Eurozone and the EMU, evidenced in its inability to ensure the compliance of Member States to follow the principles and values underlying the integration project in Europe (including the protection of democracy, the Rule of Law, and human rights). This defiance has affected the Union profoundly, and this book dissects the essence of this crisis, examining its history and offering coping methods for the years to come. Defiance is not a new concept and this volume explores the richness of EU-level and national-level examples of historical defiance—the French Empty Chair policy, the Luxembourg compromise, and the FPÖ crisis in Austria—and draws on the experience of the US legal system and that of the integration projects on other continents. Building on this legal-political context, the book focuses on the assessment of the adequacy of the enforcement mechanisms whilst learning from EU integration history. Structured in four parts, the volume studies theoretical issues on defiance in the context of multi-layered legal orders, EU mechanisms of acquis and values’ enforcement, comparative perspective on law-enforcement in multi-layered legal systems, and case-studies of defiance in the EU.

This chapter provides a crude overview of current knowledge in neuroscience about the human nervous system and its functionality. The distinction between the peripheral and central nervous systems is introduced. Next, brain anatomy is introduced, as well as nerve cells and the information processing principles that unfold in biological neural networks. Moreover, brain modules are covered, including their interconnected communication. With modularizations and wiring systematicities in mind, functional and structural systematicities are surveyed, including neural homunculi, cortical columnar structures, and the six-layered structure of the cerebral cortex. Finally, different available brain imaging techniques are contrasted. In conclusion, evidence is surveyed that suggests that the brain can be viewed as a highly modularized predictive processing system, which maintains internal activity and produces internal structures for the purpose of maintaining bodily needs in approximate homeostasis.

The U.S. system of layered governments encompasses states, cities, and other entities such as counties and special districts. Most scholars have adopted one of three major approaches to studying this complex system: a legal approach that emphasizes a lack of formal powers at lower levels; a fiscal federalism tradition that focuses on considerations of efficiency; or a focus on intergovernmental policy and public administration. Each literature has much to offer, but none provides a comprehensive political perspective on federalism. Such an approach would view the various governments in the intergovernmental system as institutional structures that have claims on each other, occupied by political entrepreneurs motivated by their own career goals that succeed or fail largely because of how they respond to constituent interests. Each component of this approach has been the subject of substantial research that can be brought to bear on the topic of sub-national politics.
