With the development of information technology and network technology, digital archive management systems have been widely used in archive management. Different from the inherent uniqueness and strong tamper-proof modification of traditional paper archives, electronic archives are stored in centralized databases which face more risks of network attacks, data loss, or stealing through malicious software and are more likely to be forged and tampered by internal managers or external attackers. The management of intangible cultural heritage archives is an important part of intangible cultural heritage protection. Because intangible heritage archives are different from traditional official archives, traditional archive management methods cannot be fully applied to intangible heritage archives’ management. This study combines the characteristics of blockchain technology with distributed ledgers, consensus mechanisms, encryption algorithms, etc., and proposes intangible cultural heritage file management based on blockchain technology for the complex, highly dispersed, large quantity, and low quality of intangible cultural heritage files. Optimizing methods, applying blockchain technology to the authenticity protection of electronic archives and designing and developing an archive management system based on blockchain technology, help to solve a series of problems in the process of intangible cultural heritage archives management.

Abstract Digital image processing technologies are used to extract and evaluate the cracks of heritage rock in this paper. Firstly, the image needs to go through a series of image preprocessing operations such as graying, enhancement, filtering and binaryzation to filter out a large part of the noise. Then, in order to achieve the requirements of accurately extracting the crack area, the image is again divided into the crack area and morphological filtering. After evaluation, the obtained fracture area can provide data support for the restoration and protection of heritage rock. In this paper, the cracks of heritage rock are extracted in three different locations. The results show that the three groups of rock fractures have different effects on the rocks, but they all need to be repaired to maintain the appearance of the heritage rock.

The article presents the 3D scanning methodology for large architectural objects, using stationary laser scanners in case of objects of cultural heritage. The developed methodology was tested in the field during 3D scanning of architectural monuments of the city of Samarkand in Uzbekistan. Particular attention is paid to technical and organisational problems of the 3D scanning process of architectural objects which appeared during the Second Scientific Expedition of the Lublin University of Technology to Central Asia. Next, methods for obtaining digital models adequate to the assumed archiving goals and dissemination of cultural heritage of Central Asia are presented. The described case study is, according to the authors, representative for 3D scanning of much-frequented architectural objects being monuments of great importance for cultural heritage.

Nowadays, the digitization of cultural heritage is drawing more and more attention. A large number of studies are trying to combine cultural heritage protection with modern technologies such as video, virtual reality technology and 3D models, so that cultural heritage can be protected and inherited. Based on the background of the digital inheritance of cultural heritage, this study takes stilted buildings of ethnic group Zhuang, a traditional dwelling of ethnic minorities in Wenshan, Yunnan, as an example. Via literature review method, field inspection method, questionnaire survey method, interview recording method and Revit software, a modeling analysis of stilted buildings is carried out, in order to figure out the contribution and limitation of BIM technology in cultural heritage protection. The study found that the visualization, simulation, information sharing and the establishment of “group” play a significant role in the protection and development of Heritage Building Information Modeling. However, the application of BIM technology is still in the preliminary research stage and has not been popularized in the field of cultural heritage protection and inheritance.

Heritage hotels attract a large number of foreign and domestic tourists by offering luxurious experiences while also providing an opportunity to learn about the history, art, culture, tastes, traditions, and sentiments present in various eras in a region’s history. The literature on heritage lodging buildings is still sparse, limited, and lacking in well-established empirical evidence. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between perceived authenticity, visitor involvement, and nostalgia in heritage hotels, with self-congruity serving as a mediator and digital technology as a moderator in the tested relationships. A total of 278 guests of heritage sites participated in this study and the data were analysed by a structural equation modelling and smart PLS program. The empirical results provide evidence that perceived authenticity and visitor involvement positively impact heritage hotel nostalgia experience, this relationship was strengthened by self-congruity as a mediator and was dampened by digital technology as a moderator. Additionally, the theoretical and practical implications regarding the application of these findings to the tourism and hospitality industries are discussed.

Abstract. The concept of preventive protection originates from the European heritage protection field. Nowadays, a complete knowledge system and normative reference framework have been formed in the field of museum collection cultural relics. However, it is just beginning in the field of traditional garden heritage protection. Based on the review of the theories and practices of the preventive protection of international historical building and traditional garden heritage, this paper makes a comprehensive survey, photo and modeling record of the rockery of Mountain Resort with the help of the current comprehensive digital mapping technology. Based on this, the paper combines the historical data files to carry out the comprehensive analysis and evaluation of the authenticity, destruction and safety of the present rockery; moreover, taking Jinshan as an example, the main points of digital surveying and mapping of large-scale rockery are summarized; Finally, summarize the current problems of rockery and put forward preventive protection suggestions. It is hoped that through this study, the case of preventive protection of Royal Garden heritage in Qing Dynasty will be enriched, and a new idea will be provided for the protection of Royal Garden heritage in Qing Dynasty.

In the last decades the world has become rapidly smaller with the destruction of spatial barriers known as “globalization.” It is a term both annoying and exhaustive, signifying a syncretic and global perception of reality. This condition has been further made easy by the enormous amount of data made accessible to us. The accelerated transition from an analogue to a digital world has literally invaded us with information creating not only a huge cultural gap between generations, with all its consequences, but offering at the same time huge opportunities. This paper intends to describe how technology, not without obstacles, has changed the way to communicate culture, and to make it more accessible. Our cultural heritage requires technology to be known and furthermore in order to be preserved. Present archives and museums, whether large or small, must move along with times, giving large space to technology and to new professional skills. The protection of our heritage requires communication, which plays a decisive role in making everybody knowledgeable. It is paradigmatic today and a duty to use technologies in order to store, preserve, save and communicate this heritage.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> The documentation of the architectural heritage requires the storage of large amounts of information that must be stored and processed in very different formats, since it comes from experts from different areas of knowledge. This heterogeneity of information makes communication difficult among professionals who participate in documentation work, such as restorers, architects, engineers, archaeologists or historians, with the transfer of information being one of the biggest problems to be solved, through the creation of a methodology that favors the diffusion and accessibility to the materials coming from the investigation. The aim of the study is to create a protocol or methodology, to create a graphic database that allows the inventory of the architectural heritage in Aragon. The solution implies the development of a geometric model that allows to include and relate information related to it. The format is a HBIM model capable of incorporating information on a stratified support, with visualization, documentation and management capabilities that allow a complete view of the building to be cataloged, incorporating useful information for its conservation, restoration, protection and dissemination, as well as interoperability between tools and other systems throughout the entire life cycle of the object. In this research, we will work with the virtual platform Petrobim, a tool composed of a database and a viewer, whose purpose is the management and query of information linked to a 3D model, throughout the entire cycle building life.</p>

Museums, libraries and archives have long been considered the retainers of some form of collective memory. Within the last twenty years, the term ‘memory institution’ has been coined to describe these entities, which is symptomatic of the fact that such places are increasingly linked through digital media and online networks. The concept of the memory institution is also part of the vocabulary used to promote broader cultural integration across nations, and appears in discussions of European heritage and in policy documents concerning the digitization of cultural heritage collections. To explore the relationship between cultural heritage, memory and digital technology further, this paper will examine the large-scale digitization project Europeana, under which museums, libraries and archives are re-defined as cultural heritage institutions or memory institutions. My purpose is to trace the conceptual trajectory of memory within this context, and to address how the idea of a European cultural memory structured by technology holds implications for institutions traditionally associated with practices of remembering.Key words: Cultural heritage, collective memory, digitization, network, memory institution, Europe, integration

Interpretation and presentation is an essential component of the whole heritage conservation process. In response to the new opportunities and challenges arising from the changing perspectives on heritage conservation, the development of display technologies and the rise of cultural tourism, it becomes a challenging task for cultural heritage institutions to construct a systematic interpretation and presentation system of a cultural heritage site that can effectively communicate heritage significance and value to the public and provide visitors with positive and valuable experience. From four main aspects (site, technology, public, and education and research), this research provides a comprehensive overview of the implementation details of the interpretation and presentation system of Old Zuoying City, which is considered an unprecedented large-scale cultural heritage preservation plan in Taiwan, through participative site investigation and in-depth interviews, thereby providing a reference for the construction, implementation, and management of interpretation and presentation system at cultural heritage sites.

For UNESCO Heritage site Vilnius City, urban heritage preservation (UHP) is an important task aimed at monitoring various risks associated with preservation of heritage valuables in urban heritage areas. Those valuables can be small and large, tangible and intangible: building façade, building doors, windows, roof elements, gates, panorama view on a heritage site, heights of the building, volumes of the building, etc. Risks to heritage valuables may vary from gradual and cumulative processes (such as age-related degradation) to sudden and catastrophic events (such as floods, fires, or armed conflict). There are also risks connected to the intentional or unintentional destruction of cultural heritage. Those usually are the cases of city infrastructure development and purposeful rebuilding of the heritage objects.

The signifier is regarded as a crucial part of interface design since it ensures that the user can manage the device appropriately and understand the interaction that is taking place. Useful signifiers keep users’ attention on learning, but poorly designed signifiers can disrupt learning by slowing progress and making it harder to use the interface. The problem is that prior research identified the qualities of signifiers, but their attributes in terms of being visually apparent in broad interaction areas were not well recognized. Implementing the signifier without sufficient visual features such as a picture, figure or gesture may interfere with the user’s ability to navigate the surface, particularly when dealing with domains that demand “leisure exploration,” such as those in culture and heritage, and notably the museum application. As technology has evolved and expanded, adopting a multi-touch tabletop as a medium of viewing should be advantageous in conserving cultural heritage. As technology advances and improves, employing a multi-touch tabletop as a public viewing medium should be advantageous in maintaining cultural heritage. Some visual elements should be incorporated into the signifier to produce a conspicuous presentation and make it easier for users to identify. In this study, a preliminary study, a card sorting survey, and a high-fidelity experiment were used to investigate users’ experience, perspective, and interpretation of the visual signifier of the museum interface for large displays. This work offered a set of integrated visual signifiers on a big multi-touch display that makes a substantial contribution to supporting navigation and interaction on a large display, therefore aiding comprehension of the exhibited information visualization.

Along with the increase in modern industry, original facilities and cultures have disappeared progressively, leading to the disappearance of traditional values. However, from the perspective of the stewardship of industrial heritage, preservation is vital for Western Europe, where the Industrial Revolution emerged firstly, and it has leading technology in terms of the advanced stewardship of industrial heritage protection. Meanwhile, there is a large market for industrial heritage growth in China, but its stewardship began later. Horizontal and vertical research into the stewardship of the industrial heritage of these two regions offers a review of the developed industrial regions and experiences for developing industrial regions in their future expansion. By analysing the values and dilemmas and the features of the legal, administrative, and fund guarantee systems, this paper summarizes the advanced expertise of the stewardship of industrial heritage in Western Europe and China and proposes strategies based on them.

Shaktipithas represent India’s rich cultural heritage. The continuity of functions at these sites further reinstates their significance as Living Religious Heritage. Their spiritual value is central to hundreds of millions of people who visit them every year. The growing population, boost in commerce, advancements in construction technology has impacted the construction trends in all spheres and typologies of architecture. Temples, the religious heritage of the country, are being widely affected by this new movement in architecture. These temples were built years ago using characteristic elements from Indian traditional temple styles or regional vernacular elements. With growth in population and rising number of pilgrims, these complexes face shortfall of infrastructure facilities. To accommodate large inflow of pilgrims especially on festivals large scale construction activities are in full swing on these sites. This paper tends to present a thorough insight into the ongoing developments at some popular sites in Himachal Pradesh, India which are in contemporary style using modern methods of construction. It is highly insensitive to the existing character of our religious heritage and deteriorates the built environment. So the need arises to conserve our cultural heritage, take timely measures to make these places sustainable pilgrimage destinations and keep alive their distinct sacred visual impact.

The end of the 19th century brings important transformations to the industrial architecture, similar to those in civil architecture, both reflecting times of profound change which the society and economy of the United Principalities were going through. The legislative measures adopted for the encouragement of the industry offer resources both for the development of business and for the extension of production workshops and their equipping. Many of the new buildings will have small dimensions, which is characteristic for a developing industry. They will not benefit from any new technical solutions and will not be gifted with particular aesthetic qualities, since substantial investments in technology and materials limited those in construction. However, projects that are adequate for this type of function will exist, with particular constructive solutions, vast surfaces covered with roofs with large spans, with no intermediate pillars, illuminated from above and adequately ventilated, which share an aesthetic quality that results from the accuracy of their details and proportions. Radical urban interventions as well as financial interests have determined, in time, the deterioration or disappearance of an important percentage of the industrial heritage of Bucharest, but their history proves, even in its absence, the value and remarkable importance that they had in the life of the city.

Tourism, the world’s largest industry, is essential to a community’s economic vitality, sustainability and profitability. The word ‘heritage’ in its broader meaning is frequently associated with the word ‘inheritance’, that is, something transferred from one generation to another. Heritage might look old-after all, the language of heritage focuses on preservation, revitalization, and restoration-but closer inspection usually reveals contemporary concerns. Heritage is the symbolic embodiment of the past, reconstructed and reinterpreted in the collective memories and traditions of contemporary societies rather than being perceived as a mere apotheosis of bygone times. It is concerned with exploring both tangible and intangible remnants of the past. Important criterion for a designation as a World Cultural Heritage site is the ‘‘authenticity’’ and ‘‘sincerity’’ of a candidate site. The heritage sites are the most susceptible and vulnerable sectors. A large number of significant heritage sites around the world are fragile properties, and they are faced with different challenges. Both Japan and Nepal is home to a variety of frequently occurring disasters, which can cause wide-ranging damage to its cultural resources. Japan and Nepal’s remarkable heritage is not only part of what makes both the countries a popular travel destination, but also something that needs to be properly protected, maintained and preserved, so that future generations can enjoy it as much as we do today. It has been interesting lesson to rest of the world that how Japan has been mitigating and surviving with large scale disasters. The Japanese culture, tradition and technology must have been playing significant role for this. The learning from Japan could be instrumental to manage, rebuild and develop heritage sites and tourism in Nepal. This article is the partial outcome of my Postdoctoral research in Japan.

Vernacular architecture is a malleable concept that encompasses structures produced by empirical/ experiential builders. It is sometimes referred to as indigenous, primitive, ethnic or even architecture without architects. Vernacular architectural heritage often found in rural areas and historic urban areas and villages represent a cultural heritage that has been handed down from one generation to the next. This heritage is under threat from modernising forces which cause deterioration in cultural and historical continuity. It is important to conserve this architecture and associated technologies for posterity. Both tangible and intangible heritage of vernacular architecture is threatened through blatant negligence, emergent and more profitable modes of construction, and lack of funds for minimum maintenance. To a large extent, this heritage is quickly deteriorating and disappearing into the hands of vandals and illegal traders due to the lack of appropriate conservation, sensitisation and training for the public and heritage professionals in the conservation of materials and practices. The paper explores the vernacular heritage in Kenya, the state of its conservation and the risks associated with its conservation. It is argued that since NCA is mandated inter alia to undertake research into any matter relating to the construction industry, it should complement the efforts of the National Museums of Kenya in the conservation of cultural heritage in so far as materials and building technologies are concerned. There is no clear legal framework for the conservation of vernacular architecture in place and it is often lumped together with other popular forms of architecture which have well-defined and documented historical trends. Emphasis has been on urban architecture in Kenya. The paper established that vernacular heritage has only been haphazardly conserved, with no clear management, documentation and preservation policies. The paper found that no resources are specifically set aside for the conservation of these heritages. The theoretical analysis concludes that vernacular architecture in Kenya has been neglected and exposed to deterioration. It also points out that the level of public sensitisation on the heritage is low and its conservation and management needs have been ignored. The study, therefore, recommends public sensitisation, preventive and interventive conservation and appropriate policies to save the heritage from imminent loss. It further suggests that detailed documentation of vernacular building materials and technology should be undertaken as a matter of urgency.

Intangible cultural heritage involves a large number of national traditions, or folk unique knowledge, language, and customs, derived from folk dance and music as well as traditional medicine and other forms of art. China’s intangible cultural heritage plays a key role in the whole national traditional culture. Strengthening the protection of intangible cultural heritage and promoting its continuous development is an important way and inevitable choice to strengthen cultural self-confidence and build a cultural power. As the builders and successors of the socialist cause, college students must strengthen their cultural self-confidence and shoulder important responsibilities in the construction of a cultural power. Big data is a new technology in the Internet era. Using big data technology to realize the collection, preservation, retrieval, reproduction, integration, dissemination, and utilization of intangible cultural heritage information can better meet the requirements of the times, so as to provide new opportunities, conditions, and means for the inheritance and development of intangible cultural heritage. This article will discuss the use of big data to analyze the research talent training of the deep integration of intangible cultural heritage inheritance and art design education in colleges and universities. This article introduces the background and significance of intangible cultural heritage inheritance and educational integration, introduces its related methods, and then designs a new mode of intangible cultural heritage learning in colleges and universities based on big data. Finally, this article applies the model to college education and then investigates the students’ experience of the new model curriculum, and comes to the conclusion that the proportion of people who choose to like and very much like the new model is 69.3%; 83.3% of the people who chose to agree and strongly agree with the new model were helpful to themselves. In short, the application and design of the new curriculum model is still relatively successful.

In this paper, we survey several 3D techniques including 3D reconstruction in which quick stereo-photogrammetric system and laser scanner involved, image-based rendering and shape modeling for protection of cultural heritage. The applications are classified into two categories: reconstruction of large-scale heritage sites; reconstruction of culture relics and exhibition. Dozens of successful cases prove the effectiveness of the technologies, and the challenges remain in several fields: the automation of extracting texture from high-resolution photo and mapping it to the 3D model needs to be improved; accelerating the rendering performance; effective integration of virtual reality technology.

Indonesia is an archipelagic country with various types of cultural heritage, including traditional houses, traditional folk dances and musical instruments. However, today with the rapid advancement of technology, the existing cultural heritage is starting to be abandoned because of the large number of foreign cultures entering this country. The author carried out this research aimed at reintroducing cultural heritage to the community through media in the form of games that are adaptive to the players, one of which is by using the forward chaining method in its development. In practice, the forward chaining method is used to determine whether the player has the right to continue to the next level or not. Based on the results of the questionnaire obtained, it shows that 92.5% of respondents strongly agree that this game can help users get to know more about cultural heritage in Indonesia and 82.9% of respondents strongly agree that this game is interesting to play.

Syria is one of the world’s most impressive Cultural Heritages in terms of the number and historical significance of its monuments. Palmyra lies in the heart of Syria, an oasis in the midst of the arid desert.it could be considered as a part of this human heritage. In1980 was registered on the world and national heritage list for its huge historical importance. In addition, it was the focus of many studies and researches in the fields of restoration. Then the disaster happened, many monuments were demolished, temple of Ba’al, temple of Bael-shameen, Arch of triumph and the Castle. Lately the Tetrapylon and the Stag. Every Syrian was hurt, the whole world was hurt. The destruction of the city caused its people to become homeless and Palmyra was no longer the oasis we know. We felt pain, so we wanted to make a move, a step forward, to present a work that expresses our love for Palmyra, we organized Palmyra workshop to provide a vision for the reconstruction and revival of the historic site importance. Visions with using new idea &amp; new technology. Palmyra historical areas are considered a large open museum for heritage through history, which is the reason to treat these area as a historical protection precinct and give a vision, ideas, suggestions to the future of Palmary as a first step to preserve the historical buildings&amp; the archeological park.

Abstract. As there usually exist widespread crack, decay, deformation and other damages in the wooden architectural heritage (WAH). It is of great significance to detect the damages automatically and rapidly in order to grasp the status for daily repairs. Traditional methods use artificial feature-driven point clouds and image processing technology for object detection. With the development of big data and GPU computing performance, data-driven deep learning technology has been widely used for monitoring WAH. Deep learning technology is more accurate, faster, and more robust than traditional methods. In this paper, we conducted a case study to detect timber-crack damages in WAH, and selected the YOLOv3 algorithm with DarkNet-53 as the backbone network in the deep learning technology according to the characteristics of the crack. A large timber-crack dataset was first constructed, based on which the timber-crack detection model was trained and tested. The results were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively, showing that our proposed method was able to reach an accuracy of more than 90% through processing each image for less than 0.1s. The promising results illustrate the validity of our self-constructed dataset as well as the reliability of YOLOv3 algorithm for the crack detection of wooden heritage.

The methodologies of microgeophysics have been derived from the geophysical ones, for the sake of solving specific diagnostic and/or monitoring problems regarding civil engineering and cultural heritage studies. Generally, the investigations are carried out using different 2D and 3D tomographic approaches as well as different energy sources: sonic and ultrasonic waves, electromagnetic (inductive and impulsive) sources, electric potential fields, and infrared emission. Many efforts have been made to modify instruments and procedures in order to improve the resolution of the surveys as well as to significantly reduce the time of the measurements without any loss of information. This last point has been achieved by using multichannel systems. Finally, some applications are presented, and the results seem to be very promising and promote this new branch of geophysics. Therefore, these methodologies can be used even more to diagnose, monitor, and safeguard not only engineering buildings and/or large structures, but also ancient monuments and cultural artifacts, such as pottery, statues, and so forth.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to analyse the role of a place’s name as the carrier of identity and heritage from the residents’ perspective. The authors assess the extent to which names of municipalities carry the place’s heritage, and how this can further be transferred to the place brand. The context is a situation in which a municipality changes its name, or is at the risk of doing so, as a result of municipal consolidation. Design/methodology/approach – The authors conducted a large survey in the south-western Finland in spring 2013. The survey questionnaire was posted to 5,020 randomly selected residents, and the final sample comprised 1,380 recipients. The authors offer a framework for operationalising place heritage, comprising four components: history, place essence, symbols and residential permanence. Findings – Most respondents attached importance to the name of their home town. The majority also felt that a name change would mean losing part of the place’s history. A strong place heritage proved to correlate positively with the importance of the municipality name. Practical implications – The developed framework for place heritage can serve as a tool for place branding studies and practical place branding. A stable name has an essential role in branding places. The authorities should understand the crucial relationship between place name, heritage and identity, and their importance to the residents. Originality/value – To the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to report empirical research on the relation between place names and place branding from the heritage perspective.

The European Cultural Heritage Strategy for the 21st century has led to an increased demand for fast, efficient and faithful 3D digitization technologies for cultural heritage artefacts. Yet, unlike the digital acquisition of cultural goods in 2D which is widely used and automated today, 3D digitization often still requires significant manual intervention, time and money. To overcome this, the authors have developed CultLab3D, the world's first fully automatic 3D mass digitization technology for collections of three-dimensional objects. 3D scanning robots such as the CultArm3D-P are specifically designed to automate the entire 3D digitization process thus allowing to capture and archive objects on a large-scale and produce highly accurate photo-realistic representations.

Over the last decades, the number of artificial reservoirs around the world has considerably increased. This leads to the formation of new shorelines, which are highly dynamic regarding erosion and deposition processes. The present work aims to assess the direct human action along the largest reservoir in Europe—Kuibyshev (Russian Federation) and to analyse threatened cultural heritage sites from the coastal area, with the help of historical maps, UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle), and topographic surveys. This approach is a necessity, due to the oscillating water level, local change of climate, and to the continuous increasing of natural hazards (in this case coastal erosion) all over the world. Many studies are approaching coastal areas of the seas and oceans, yet there are fewer studies regarding the inland coastal areas of large artificial reservoirs. Out of the total number of 1289 cultural heritage sites around the Kuibyshev reservoir, only 90 sites are not affected by the dam building; the rest had completely disappeared under the reservoir’s water. The scenario of increasing and decreasing water level within the reservoir has shown the fact that there must be water oscillations greater than ±1 m in order to affect the cultural heritage sites. The results show that the coastal area is highly dynamic and that the complete destruction of the last remaining Palaeolithic site (Beganchik) from the shoreline of Kuibyshev reservoir is imminent, and immediate mitigation measures must be undertaken.

The advancements in geospatial web technology triggered efforts for disclosure of valuable resources of historical collections. This paper focuses on the role of spatial data infrastructures (SDI) in such efforts. The work describes the interplay between SDI technologies and potential use cases in libraries such as cartographic heritage. The metadata model is introduced to link up the sources from these two distinct fields. To enhance the data search capabilities, the work focuses on the representation of the content-based metadata of raster images, which is the crucial prerequisite to target the search in a more effective way. The architecture of the prototype system for automatic raster data processing, storage, analysis and distribution is introduced. The architecture responds to the characteristics of input datasets, namely to the continuous flow of very large raster data and related metadata. Proposed solutions are illustrated on the case study of cartometric analysis of digitised early maps and related metadata encoding.

This paper aims to incorporate artistic vocabulary from intangible cultural heritage into historical clothing designs, particularly beautiful pattern designs. It is based on a profound understanding of the concept of immaterial cultural heritage and the mastery of its traditional skills to meet the public’s needs in terms of clothing and flowers. Technology, culture, and intangible cultural legacies can all be passed down and incorporated into the design. It is using interactive evolutionary computing to investigate the intangible cultural heritage elements of designing novel decorative flower patterns for clothing. Due to the rapid advancement of digital technology, computers are now used more frequently in the design of patterns and clothing. The goal is to improve the production of artistic trends and decrease the use of manual and traditional methods. This study uses interactive genetic algorithms to examine the current state of intangible cultural heritage elements in building designs for decorative flower patterns for clothing. The application of genetic algorithms to the design of clothing with flowers as decorative patterns is the main focus of this paper. The genetic algorithm is described, followed by an analysis of its fundamental structure. Then, the characteristics of the clothing flower decorative pattern are determined, the genetic algorithm model is applied to the design of the decorative flower patterns for clothing, and the hierarchical structure of heredity, variation, and interaction is provided. Finally, the genetic algorithm is applied to the large-scale generation and mutation optimization of designing decorative flower patterns for clothing after analyzing its application in clothing flower decorative pattern technology. The idea presented in this paper can self-reproduce and optimize, resulting in the nonartificial generation and optimization of designing decorative flower patterns for clothing.

Purpose This paper aims to propose a system to acquire images automatically for digital reconstruction of heritage artifacts using a six-degree of freedom industrial manipulator. Design/methodology/approach A virtual environment is created using Robot Studio® software to integrate the trajectory and differential motion of the robot manipulator and the motion of camera while acquiring images. A new area similarity matrix method is proposed to reduce the number of images required for digital reconstruction using Autodesk Recap® software. Real-time experiments have been performed using objects such as minion, ultimaker robot and cube. Evaluation of the digital reconstruction is conducted using the contour area matching method. Findings The number of images required for reconstruction based on area similarity matrix method is reduced to 63 per cent when compared with the random selection method. Quality parameters such as surface area, volume, number of defect holes, vertices and faces are enhanced for the proposed method. Research limitations/implications Digital reconstruction of large-sized heritage artifacts cannot be performed in this setup. But this can be overcome by fixing the manipulator on a mobile platform or overhead crane. This paper does not discuss the reconstruction of partially damaged heritage artifacts, which could be accomplished based on deep learning techniques. Practical implications Using this approach, off-the-shelf heritage artifacts and large-scale objects can be reconstructed digitally with a minimum number of images and without compromising the quality of original models. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, area similarity-based approach in 3D digital reconstruction by coupling the kinematics of an industrial manipulator and camera is proposed for the first time. A fully automated digital reconstruction technology to preserve valuable heritage artifacts has been developed. It also highlights the space constraints of the industrial manipulator in digital reconstruction.

The spread of digital technology has led to a renewed phase within the debate on property rights in Cultural Heritage reproduction. This topic is addressed in different ways, but it is currently under discussion both in Europe and USA. Italy holds a particular position in this debate, due to its large concentration of ancient remains and the peculiar structure of its laws. The interesting experiments of total open access to Cultural Heritage reproduction on the one hand, and claims of the State Administration for control of Cultural Heritage exploitation and a consequent income (in any sense) on the other, are equally valid arguments. At the same time the blurred distinction between the concepts of ‘reconstruction’ and ‘reproduction’, of ‘personal’ and ‘commercial’ use, and the philosophical and mathematical difficulties in defining what is exactly a ‘copy’ in the digital context, make the matter harder. The paper aims to analyse this debate, and to make a contribution to a new method of considering the economic dimension of Cultural Heritage, taking into account international discussion, while focusing on the situation in Italy, and trying to sum up the needs of the different subjects involved while expressing a proposal to resolve the problem.

Ta Keo temple is one of the very famous temple complex of Angkor Wat in northwestern Cambodia. It has been suffering massive collapse and other serious damages in recent years. Nowadays, Terrestrial Laser Scanning(TLS) technology is considered as a wellestablished resource for heritage documentation and protection (Lerma et al, 2008; Reshetyuk, 2009). This paper used TLS to reconstruct Ta Keo Temple. Firstly, we acquired 71 scanning stations of points cloud data with high density and high accuracy, and over one thousand images with high spatial resolution about the temple. Secondly, the raw points cloud data were denoised, reduced and managed efficiently, and registrated using an adjusted ICP algorithm. Thirdly, a triangulation method was used to model most objects. At last, we mapped the texture data into the digital model and a 3-D model of Ta Keo with high accuracy was achieved. The authors focus on large object reconstruction by TLS technology, and pay much attention to the scanning design, multi-station data and the whole project’s data registration, and texture mapping and so on. The research result will be useful for Ta Keo restoration, reconstruction and protection. Also, it is a good reference source for large complex buildings reconstruction when using terrestrial laser scanning technology.

In the past, the traditional small-scale 3D reconstruction technology developed maturely and mainly relied on manual handheld devices for data acquisition. Due to multiple factors, inaccuracy, and other problems, data will be omitted, and sometimes staff will face risks directly. Nowadays, with the development of computer science and technology, three-dimensional reconstruction technology has been innovated continuously, and it has also made a breakthrough in the application of large-scale reconstruction of dangerous areas. In this paper, the expensive sensors in the past are abandoned, and the cheaper and more efficient lidar is used instead. The laser point cloud and image are combined to describe the mining heritage scene in depth, and the academic achievements are transformed into productivity. The results show that (1) comparing the performance of the algorithm, the overall error of the proposed method is 5.86, and the average time consumption is about 10.23 ms. This filtering algorithm can restore the landscape of mining heritage to a great extent and optimize the problems of noise and outliers. (2) Our designed model has a very low loss value, and the point cloud accuracy is as high as 92.9%. Compared with other model methods, the model has excellent performance. (3) After the completion of the model, the overall satisfaction effect is above 70%, which can well restore the mining heritage style. Finally, the experimental effect of 3D reconstruction is good, which is more conducive to the research of reconstruction protection. There are still some work details and performance problems that need to be optimized and solved.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> With the repaid development of Building Information Modelling (BIM), many scholars began to explore the BIM-adaption in landscape field. Landscape Information Modelling (LIM) is the corresponding concept created and used in landscape architecture discipline. However, cultural landscape heritage, as a special cultural heritage category, have specific objectives, principles and methodologies in conservation and management. It is necessary to explore an integrated information framework to facilitate the digital management of cultural landscape information. The aim of this paper is to explore an integrated information framework, which I call a ‘Heritage Landscape Information Model (HLIM)’, to facilitate cultural landscape heritage practices in China. This research examined the Digital Scenic Area project as instrumental case studies to identify the main components for a HLIM. As the two major components of cultural landscape heritage, both the physical features and the non-physical landscapes experiences were identified in this paper. The large amount of intangible heritage aspects indicated the significant differences between a HLIM and a BIM. Accordingly, a conceptual framework to represent ‘cultural experiences’ was identified with certain categories of landscape features and attributes. In terms of technologies, firstly, this research revealed that virtual reality was the most prioritised tool used in the current landscape conservation practices in China. Secondly, the other required system includes landscape-monitoring tools and the automation office work. Lastly, a HLIM also needs to contain a special information platform for cultural and historical information. The components identified in this paper could potentially contribute to an integrated conceptual framework of HLIM in China. The conclusion identified several implications for technology development.</p>

The level of information security of the cultural heritage of the region has a direct impact on the spatial development of the territory. Most often this is expressed in the quantity and quality of scientific research in this area, measures to protect and popularize the cultural heritage of the region, and, as a result, the level of development of educational tourism in this area. The widespread accessibility of the Internet in our country, as well as the annual enormous increase in the number of mobile Internet users, makes it possible to disseminate a large amount of heterogeneous information as quickly and efficiently as possible. Therefore, web technologies are rationally applied to increase the level of information security of cultural heritage objects. Geospatial information perceived by the user preferably in a graphical form, for example, using interactive maps and web-GIS. To create them, you need to integrate web technologies and geoinformation mapping. The article presents a study of the advantages and disadvantages of using web technologies in cartography. In the process of research, a technology for creating web GIS of cultural heritage objects was developed, based on the integration of web technologies and geoinformation mapping. The article describes in detail the main stages and features of creating such geoinformation products, as well as the requirements for them. A prototype of the web GIS “Cultural heritage of the Novosibirsk region” has been developed.it can be used by any person for educational purposes, as well as by territorial bodies of protection of cultural heritage objects, local governments, construction organizations, road enterprises, land use and subsoil use enterprises, educational and scientific organizations, as well as tour operators and other economic entities.

Is culture considered to be our past, our roots, ancient ruins, or an old piece of art? Culture is all the factors that define who we are, how we act and interact in our world, in our daily activities, in our personal and public relations, in our life. Culture is all the things we are not obliged to do. However, today, we live in a mixed environment, an environment that is a combination of “offline” and the online, digital world. In this mixed environment, it is technology that defines our behaviour, technology that unites people in a large world, that finally, defines a status of “monoculture”. In this article, we examine the role of technology, and especially big data, in relation to the culture. We present the advances that led to paradigm shifts in the research area of cultural informatics, and forecast the future of culture as will be defined in this mixed world.

The present research aims to study the effectiveness of the envelope components of colonial dwellings in maintaining a comfortable indoor thermal environment. In hot and dry areas, extreme outdoor air temperatures compel designers to provide a better indoor thermal condition which remains a rather delicate task to achieve such as in the case of the city of Biskra. The heritage buildings were constructed in the colonial period in the Biskra region; the colonial district buildings are built with local materials such as mud bricks and stones that have a large thermal mass; these materials are the main component of the walls of the outer exterior skin. Onsite measurement campaigns were carried out to record air temperatures inside the inhabited area for 24 hours. Thereafter, the collected data were compared with the outdoor air temperatures to assess the effect of the envelope impact on the temperature variation. The important results remain in the envelope’s crucial effect to achieve thermal comfort using local materials with a high thermal mass.

Laser scanning is a high-end technology with possibilities far ahead the well-known civil engineering and industrial applications. The actual geomatic technologies and methodologies for cultural heritage documentation allow the generation of very realistic 3D results used for many scopes like archaeological documentation, digital conservation, 3D repositories, etc. The fast acquisition times of large number of point clouds in 3D opens up the world of capabilities to document and keep alive cultural heritage, moving forward the generation of virtual animated replicas of great value and smooth multimedia dissemination. This paper presents the use of a terrestrial laser sca nning (TLS) as a valuable tool for 3D documentation of large outdoor cultural heritage sculptures such as two of the existing ones inside the “Campus de Vera” of the UPV: “Defensas I” and “Mentoring”. The processing of the TLS data is discussed in detail in order to create photo-realistic digital models. Data acquisition is conducted with a time-of-flight scanner, characterized by its high accuracy, small beam, and ultra-fine scanning. Data processing is performed using Leica Geosystems Cyclone Software for the data registration and 3DReshaper Software for modelling and texturing. High-resolution images after calibration and orientation of an off-the-shelf digital camera are draped onto the models to achieve right appearance in colour and texture. A discussion on the differences found out when modelling sculptures with different deviation errors will be presented. Processing steps such as normal smoothing and vertices recalculation are found appropriate to achieve continuous meshes around the objects.

AbstractConnemara Marble, a well-known distinctive decorative stone from the west of Ireland, is herein proposed as a Global Heritage Stone Resource. Connemara Marble is a sillimanite-grade ophicarbonate, dominated by dolomite and calcite with varying proportions of serpentine, diopside, forsterite, tremolite clinochlore and phlogopite. The marble displays intricate corrugated layers that range in colour from white through sepias to various shades of green. These features impart unique characteristics that set the marble apart from other ornamental stones. Characteristics reflect amphibolite-grade metamorphism of an impure siliceous dolomitic limestone during the Grampian orogeny (475–463 Ma). Olivine, diopside, tremolite along with calcite and dolomite were formed during the peak of metamorphism which was followed by a later pervasive hydrothermal metamorphism that led to the extensive growth of serpentine after olivine and diopside. It has been used since Neolithic times, but has been quarried and fashioned in Connemara since the eighteenth century, and widely utilized in buildings in Ireland and the UK, for cladding, banisters, columns and church fittings. Later in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries it was exported in large quantities to the USA for use in civic and educational buildings. Its many uses as an ornamental stone in the interiors of buildings and in Irish jewellery commands worldwide acclaim.

In Greece, the appreciation of industrial buildings is relatively recent, with the legal authorities having recognized their historical value by listing them as monuments. Nineteenth century industrial buildings can be identified as cultural monuments of the past, as well as assist in the reconstruction of urban landscapes. Additionally, individual initiatives, organized by volunteers, present the necessity for documentation through relevant research projects. The reuse of industrial buildings for cultural activities has lately become a common practice. In Athens, a large number of buildings dated to the industrial revolution and that present historical and architectural features worthy of being preserved have been recorded. Following the philosophy of smart cities, this paper presents a digital inventory of the industrial buildings located in the historical center of Athens; many of which have recently been adapted to host cultural activities. Τhe use of smart technology, by creating a digital application for smart phones, will provide access to a continuously enriched registry, via interactive maps. This initiative will promote the buildings’ past and present use and, moreover, the creative concept of their multiple functions. The suggested model of cultural management is applicable to every industrial building in Athens.

Abstract. In 1985, the World Heritage Committee inscribed the site “Painted Churches in the Troodos Region” of the Republic of Cyprus on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The latter included nine Byzantine and Post Byzantine Churches to which a tenth church was added in 2001. In the framework of the IH-AT project, all the churches and the premises in their proximities were analysed using a wide array of non-destructive digital methodologies coupled with more traditional art-historical studies. Image- and Range-based techniques were used to document all the morphological features of the buildings with the final goal of understanding their humble architecture. Additionally, a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) was performed to investigate the presence of buried structures that, according to historical sources, were once surrounding the religious sites. For the exploitation and visualization of the extensive database by the scientific community and the public at large, a web portal comprised of reliable and efficient technology-ready tools have been developed. The proposed methodology was implemented to provide new insights on the churches’ architectural features; confirm the presence or absence of buried remains of archaeological interest; and help heritage professionals, with lack or minimal programming skills, to customize online visualizations of 3D interactive models.

The curation design of cultural heritage sites, such as museums, influence the level of visitor satisfaction and the possibility of revisitation; therefore, an efficient exhibit layout is critical. The difficulty of determining the behavior of visitors and the layout of galleries means that exhibition layout is a knowledge-intensive, time-consuming process. The progressive development of machine learning provides a low-cost and highly flexible workflow in the management of museums, compared to traditional curation design. For example, the facility’s optimal layout, floor, and furniture arrangement can be obtained through the repeated adjustment of artificial intelligence algorithms within a relatively short time. In particular, an optimal planning method is indispensable for the immense and heavy trains in the railway museum. In this study, we created an innovative strategy to integrate the domain knowledge of exhibit displaying, spatial planning, and machine learning to establish a customized recommendation scheme. Guided by an interactive experience model and the morphology of point–line–plane–stereo, we obtained three aspects (visitors, objects, and space), 12 dimensions (orientation, visiting time, visual distance, centrality, main path, district, capacity, etc.), 30 physical principles, 24 suggestions, and five main procedures to implement layout patterns and templates to create an exhibit layout guide for the National Railway Museum of Taiwan, which is currently being transferred from the railway workshop for the sake of preserving the rail culture heritage. Our results are suitable and extendible to different museums by adjusting the criteria used to establish a new recommendation scheme.

The “Tianzihao” colony was built by the French Jesuits in the 1890s. As one of the earliest examples of the French Catholic Church’s mission in China, as well as the only case in Nanjing, it shows the historical scenes of Western missionaries in Nanjing 120 years ago. It is a demonstration of cultural exchanges between China and the West after China opened to the Western world in the late 19th century. In architectural style, the “Tianzihao” colony is Western-style townhouses, but a large number of traditional Chinese architectural technologies were used for it, and therefore it is characterized by Western space and Chinese technology. The “Tianzihao” colony was badly damaged during these decades, with a lot of decayed building materials and structures on the verge of collapse. Based on the historical research and technical analysis of the “Tianzihao” colony, this article explores the conservation strategies and methods of reusing the architectural heritage. In addition, this article is to study the characteristics of the times before introduction of Western architectural technology in Nanjing based on an analysis on the building technology used for the “Tianzihao” colony. The authors participated in the conservation and restoration project of the “Tianzihao” colony, and the objective of this study was achieved through some qualitative methods, including collection and analysis of archival data, analysis of old maps and photos, architectural mapping and a large amount of historical information found in the conservation process.
