With the development of information technology and network technology, digital archive management systems have been widely used in archive management. Different from the inherent uniqueness and strong tamper-proof modification of traditional paper archives, electronic archives are stored in centralized databases which face more risks of network attacks, data loss, or stealing through malicious software and are more likely to be forged and tampered by internal managers or external attackers. The management of intangible cultural heritage archives is an important part of intangible cultural heritage protection. Because intangible heritage archives are different from traditional official archives, traditional archive management methods cannot be fully applied to intangible heritage archives’ management. This study combines the characteristics of blockchain technology with distributed ledgers, consensus mechanisms, encryption algorithms, etc., and proposes intangible cultural heritage file management based on blockchain technology for the complex, highly dispersed, large quantity, and low quality of intangible cultural heritage files. Optimizing methods, applying blockchain technology to the authenticity protection of electronic archives and designing and developing an archive management system based on blockchain technology, help to solve a series of problems in the process of intangible cultural heritage archives management.

Abstract Digital image processing technologies are used to extract and evaluate the cracks of heritage rock in this paper. Firstly, the image needs to go through a series of image preprocessing operations such as graying, enhancement, filtering and binaryzation to filter out a large part of the noise. Then, in order to achieve the requirements of accurately extracting the crack area, the image is again divided into the crack area and morphological filtering. After evaluation, the obtained fracture area can provide data support for the restoration and protection of heritage rock. In this paper, the cracks of heritage rock are extracted in three different locations. The results show that the three groups of rock fractures have different effects on the rocks, but they all need to be repaired to maintain the appearance of the heritage rock.

The article presents the 3D scanning methodology for large architectural objects, using stationary laser scanners in case of objects of cultural heritage. The developed methodology was tested in the field during 3D scanning of architectural monuments of the city of Samarkand in Uzbekistan. Particular attention is paid to technical and organisational problems of the 3D scanning process of architectural objects which appeared during the Second Scientific Expedition of the Lublin University of Technology to Central Asia. Next, methods for obtaining digital models adequate to the assumed archiving goals and dissemination of cultural heritage of Central Asia are presented. The described case study is, according to the authors, representative for 3D scanning of much-frequented architectural objects being monuments of great importance for cultural heritage.

Nowadays, the digitization of cultural heritage is drawing more and more attention. A large number of studies are trying to combine cultural heritage protection with modern technologies such as video, virtual reality technology and 3D models, so that cultural heritage can be protected and inherited. Based on the background of the digital inheritance of cultural heritage, this study takes stilted buildings of ethnic group Zhuang, a traditional dwelling of ethnic minorities in Wenshan, Yunnan, as an example. Via literature review method, field inspection method, questionnaire survey method, interview recording method and Revit software, a modeling analysis of stilted buildings is carried out, in order to figure out the contribution and limitation of BIM technology in cultural heritage protection. The study found that the visualization, simulation, information sharing and the establishment of “group” play a significant role in the protection and development of Heritage Building Information Modeling. However, the application of BIM technology is still in the preliminary research stage and has not been popularized in the field of cultural heritage protection and inheritance.

Heritage hotels attract a large number of foreign and domestic tourists by offering luxurious experiences while also providing an opportunity to learn about the history, art, culture, tastes, traditions, and sentiments present in various eras in a region’s history. The literature on heritage lodging buildings is still sparse, limited, and lacking in well-established empirical evidence. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between perceived authenticity, visitor involvement, and nostalgia in heritage hotels, with self-congruity serving as a mediator and digital technology as a moderator in the tested relationships. A total of 278 guests of heritage sites participated in this study and the data were analysed by a structural equation modelling and smart PLS program. The empirical results provide evidence that perceived authenticity and visitor involvement positively impact heritage hotel nostalgia experience, this relationship was strengthened by self-congruity as a mediator and was dampened by digital technology as a moderator. Additionally, the theoretical and practical implications regarding the application of these findings to the tourism and hospitality industries are discussed.

Abstract. The concept of preventive protection originates from the European heritage protection field. Nowadays, a complete knowledge system and normative reference framework have been formed in the field of museum collection cultural relics. However, it is just beginning in the field of traditional garden heritage protection. Based on the review of the theories and practices of the preventive protection of international historical building and traditional garden heritage, this paper makes a comprehensive survey, photo and modeling record of the rockery of Mountain Resort with the help of the current comprehensive digital mapping technology. Based on this, the paper combines the historical data files to carry out the comprehensive analysis and evaluation of the authenticity, destruction and safety of the present rockery; moreover, taking Jinshan as an example, the main points of digital surveying and mapping of large-scale rockery are summarized; Finally, summarize the current problems of rockery and put forward preventive protection suggestions. It is hoped that through this study, the case of preventive protection of Royal Garden heritage in Qing Dynasty will be enriched, and a new idea will be provided for the protection of Royal Garden heritage in Qing Dynasty.

In the last decades the world has become rapidly smaller with the destruction of spatial barriers known as “globalization.” It is a term both annoying and exhaustive, signifying a syncretic and global perception of reality. This condition has been further made easy by the enormous amount of data made accessible to us. The accelerated transition from an analogue to a digital world has literally invaded us with information creating not only a huge cultural gap between generations, with all its consequences, but offering at the same time huge opportunities. This paper intends to describe how technology, not without obstacles, has changed the way to communicate culture, and to make it more accessible. Our cultural heritage requires technology to be known and furthermore in order to be preserved. Present archives and museums, whether large or small, must move along with times, giving large space to technology and to new professional skills. The protection of our heritage requires communication, which plays a decisive role in making everybody knowledgeable. It is paradigmatic today and a duty to use technologies in order to store, preserve, save and communicate this heritage.

Large technology heritage objects are impressive, exciting and fascinating. They can also be difficult, dangerous and expensive. When working with large technology objects every project demands more resources, every triumph is more newsworthy and every mistake is more visible. With large technology objects “getting it right” is vital. This thesis explores what “getting it right” means in both affective and practical terms, and for both producers of, and visitors to, large technology heritage displays. During 2008-9 over 80 producers and 368 visitors were interviewed at seven heritage sites and, for comparison, one non-heritage site within Australia. These interviews were analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively to examine people’s attitudes to large technology heritage, and to understand the major influences that form, maintain and change such attitudes. The thesis also examines methods of interpreting and displaying large technology objects, as well as the impact of heritage industry standards on the preservation, restoration and management of large technology heritage. The results of the study indicate that, while the practical challenges of giving big, old machines a new life as heritage are formidable, it is the values that different people see in such objects that are the source of the greatest difficulties. Producers of large technology heritage come from different backgrounds and communities of practice, and they see different values in the objects and look to different practical ways to enhance those values. Unfortunately they do not always understand, or value, each other’s values, which can lead to bitter disputes over which is the right way to do things. They also do not always understand the values that their visitors see in the objects, or recognise that display methods that are welcoming and engaging for their visitors may be very different from the ways in which they themselves expect to see large technology objects presented. The major finding of this study, therefore, is that an emphasis on developing technical methods of preserving, restoring and interpreting large technology heritage is doomed to failure unless it is combined with an equally strong emphasis on developing methods to draw out and reconcile the different values that people see in that heritage. Different practical methods of preserving, restoring and interpreting large technology objects are not “right” or “wrong” in themselves, but they do have the effect of enhancing some values and reducing or destroying others. Unless everyone involved in the project agrees on the values that practical treatments should enhance, there will be no consensus about the success of those treatments. The findings of this study have important implications for research and practice in large technology heritage. In particular, research is needed into the social impacts of large technology heritage, and into ways of incorporating values effectively into the practice of caring for large technology heritage. Such research, and concomitant changes in practice, will contribute significantly to the success and sustainability of large technology projects, and to the survival of these fabulous objects for the future.

The Centre for Heritage Conservation Studies and Technologies (KDWT) was founded in spring 2016 as a central research institute of the Otto Friedrich University Bamberg. The core tasks of the KDWT are the expansion of knowledge and technology transfer to non-university research in-stitutions, business and crafts, the expansion of technical excellence, the supplementation of the range of courses, the support in research, teaching, transfer and service in terms of content and technical equipment as well in the internationalisation of research. The centre is divided into four departments: Monument Preservation, Digital Heritage Technologies, Building Research and Res-toration Science and thus covers both the foundations in the humanities as well as engineering and scientific approaches. The first volume of the “Reports of the KDWT” series presents the technically diverse work of the first two and a half years since the KDWT was established in a format with colour illustrations. Four main chapters represent the four departments mentioned. First, the fundamental aims and focus of each subject are outlined. This is followed by individual presentations of the respective re-search projects, which also would like to bring the content closer to the non-expert reader, especially through the illustrations provided. For a better overview, basic information and thematically linked publications have been added to the projects. For example, the Monument Preservation department reports on various projects related to the theme, city and heritage conservation, addresses participatory heritage protection, emotions and heritage as well as a municipal monument plan for Bavaria, to name just a few. The digital heritage technologies outline projects in the area of 3D documentation. The building research area analy-ses large medieval buildings, develops concepts for building preservation and improves technical skills in building analysis. Finally, the area of restoration science explains the use of non-destructive methods of investigation and microanalysis based on international and local projects, be they Sin-ghalese temple sites, European cathedrals or medieval textiles from the Bamberg cathedral treasury. The aim of the project presentations is to clarify to what extent each sub-area represents the KDWT with extraordinary, professionally sound experience and expertise in teaching, research and above all in practice. In order to do justice to the extensive transfer, networking and research activities of the individual members, a fifth main chapter lists all individual services in alphabetical order until mid-2018.

AbstractThis article presents the work conducted by the authors to analyze the stability of the St. Andrew’s Church which contains architecture, painting and decorative arts of the XVIII century. The church is located on a landslide-hazardous hill in the historic part of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. The architectural monument was built in 1747–1762 upon the project of Francois Bartolomeo Rastrelli in the Baroque style. It is one of the most important architectural monuments in Ukraine, which has cultural and historical value. Fluctuations in the height of the soil of the upper and lower part of the hill, on which St. Andrew’s Church is located, vary from 181.7 to 118.5 m. There are physical and geological hazards around the historic building, such as landslides, loose soil, soil inhomogeneities, and external erosion of the hill. To preserve this national heritage monument, a set of measures needed (monitoring the monument, identifying dangerous areas, carrying out fortification works, etc.). Monitoring of architectural monument in large areas could be carried out using optoelectronic and radar-location data and remote sensing of the Earth from space. Radar-location observations make it possible to determine reliable information about objects that are exposed to landslides and endure displacements (Casagli et al. in Landslides 7:291–301, 2010). Optoelectronic observations are effective for identifying areas and objects, identifying threats, operational assessment of the state of environmental objects, identifying areas that are affected, etc. After obtaining information on specific landslide-hazardous objects, with the help of geographic information systems (GIS) tools, areas of interest are identified for space survey of ultra-high spatial diversity to further assess the state of the architectural monument and the surrounding area. Subsequently, ground research and mathematical calculations of the object under study are carried out and measures are taken to eliminate landslide hazards and preserve the national heritage. With the results of this research, geotechnical works were already carried out to strengthen, restore and reinforce the damaged building structures.

The development of intelligent guides for a museum is an important theme of research entailing a variety of challenging aspects. Intelligent guides are based on the idea that information presentation should take into account the context of the individual, in the first place the position of the visitor, but also other information that the system can infer about his background, interests and attitude during the visit, and tailor presentation of information accordingly. PEACH was a large project devoted to cultural heritage appreciation that combined aspects of basic research and applied research specific for the development of a complex prototype. The chapter provides a state of the art of intelligent museum guides, a presentation of PEACH and several of the involved technologies, and an assessment of some of the outstanding further challenges.

In this chapter, the authors describe the development and application of language technology for intelligent information access to the content of digitized cultural heritage collections in the form of Swedish classical literary works. This technology offers sophisticated and flexible support functions to literary scholars and researchers. The authors focus on one kind of text processing technology (named entity recognition) and one research field (literary onomastics), but try to argue that the techniques involved are quite general and can be further developed in a number of directions. This way, the authors aim at supporting the users of digitized literature collections with tools that enable semantic search, browsing and indexing of texts. In this sense, the authors offer new ways for exploring the large volumes of literary texts being made available through national cultural heritage digitization projects. Large museums as services to the community, can be considered strategic facilities needing exploitation after the health emergency. Through optimising usability, some methodologies and tools taken from other building uses (hospitals, airports) for analysing users and flows seem effective in testing new spaces’ uses. The case study of Mercati Traianei–Museo dei Fori Imperiali was investigated in two different periods and methods for comparing the impacting factors on usability and orientation of visiting routes. A direct analysis in 2015 detected crucial issues for walking through museum routes and connections, while a more recent indirect analysis went deeper through configurational methodologies included in the Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS). This methodology empowers analysis of the space syntax, and the factors affecting the visitors’ satisfaction. The two methods were found to be effective for a deeper knowledge of the museum and its priorities. Tools of direct on-site observation are essential to promptly identify obstacles for upgrading usability. Instead, the configurational analysis allows a much faster application and supports a more global and dynamic vision of more inclusive visiting routes, avoiding visitors’ stigmatisation.

This chapter describes the hardware and software design of the CAVEkiosk--the first large-scale immersive Virtual Reality environment intended for public use--developed at UC San Diego as part of the Catalyst project. It discusses how the authors collaborated to build new CAVEkiosks at four UC campuses linked by the high-speed Pacific Research Platform to share research data and imagery from at-risk sites around the world, specifically Greece, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, and Turkey. The authors present technical concepts in a way that is understandable to the lay reader and the proposed audience for the volume. This contribution provides a solid literature background for topics presented in other chapters. It introduces readers to Virtual Reality (VR) technology, which is now widely used in archaeology and museums to represent sites and artifacts for scholarly and public-facing purposes.

Akershus Castle is one of Norway’s most important historical monuments and is listed with the highest grade of protection. The earlier medieval castle from around the year 1300 is an arena for the Norwegian state and in use for such as government dinners and receptions. The castle is also an important tourist destination and is used for public events like concerts, etc. Until today, people in wheelchair have had to be carried into the buildings due to stairs and differences in levels inside. In the autumn of 2021 five measures that make large parts of the castle accessible, were completed. Making public buildings accessible has high priority in Norway. Having achieved this at Akershus Castle is of great symbolic value. During the process of defining the projects extent and measures the method values-based conservation was applied. This was done through involving several stakeholders in assessing and quantifying an array of values and criteria. On this basis it was possible to define the project, achieve the permits from the heritage authorities and get acceptance from the organisations representing people with disabilities. The result has been very well received by the public, stakeholders and by the cultural heritage authorities.

Audiovisual archives are embracing the opportunities offered by digitization for managing their work processes and offering new services to a wide array of user groups. Organization strategy, working processes and software development need to be able to support a culture where innovation can flourish. Some institutions are beginning to adopt the concept of ‘two-speed IT’. The core strategy aims to accommodate two informational technology tracks simultaneously: foundational but ‘slow’ and innovative but exible and ‘fast’. This paper outlines the rationale behind the two-speed IT strategy. It highlights a specific implementation at the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision, a large audiovisual archive and museum where two-speed IT is enabling the institute to reach its business objectives.

The techniques applied to restore and conserve the 16 ceramic panels which are an integral part the façade of the Palácio da Justiça’s South Building, in Lisbon (authored by Jorge Barradas, Querubim Lapa and Júlio Resende), was marked by the adoption of disruptive technology as one of the main methods of approaching the pieces in need of intervention. Different materials and techniques, both digital and manual, either from physical or aesthetic perspectives, guaranteed their future preservation. Following principles of restoration ethics, photographic references of the compositions served as a goal to assimilate the original work as much as possible. Recurring missing parts were then to be reconstructed by means of 3D scanning and current object printing technology. Such technique allows a preview and manipulation through specific computer software. Once the file has been completed with all the information necessary to produce the object, it can be sent directly to a 3D printer. The main objective of intervening Jorge Barradas' panels with 3D printed objects, was to replace large key pieces in a non-intrusive way and without damaging the original work. Simultaneously, in addition to the durability of such printed materials, a "life insurance" is created in case of any damage or theft, since it can be replicated quickly from the thorough scan, stored in a digital file format.

In recent years we have witnessed how technology applied to built heritage has exponentially changed the daily practices of the various experts involved in the life cycle of buildings. The techniques of representation of historical architecture have been able to make use of new 3D survey tools as well as research methods capable of managing a large amount of data while improving the level of information (LOI) and accuracy of the surveyed artefacts. On the other hand, professionals still have to make use of a large number of exchange formats in order to share their digital representations (3D, 2D) and analysis. For this reason, this paper describes the research approach followed to obtain “standard” architectural representations of a heritage building in the Cultural Heritage domain. The word “standard” is used in its original meaning: “something established by authority, custom, or general consent as a model or example” (Collins Dictionary). In this context, 3D models have a primary role in the workflow because its position is in-between the 3D survey techniques that come first and the restoration/maintenance activities. The authors’ thought is that the workflow should be as smooth and sustainable as possible to have an effective standardization and collaboration among disciplines, sectors and technicians working in the different study areas.

As described in detail at previous ASME-PVP Conferences and also reminded by separate papers presented this year, large efforts have been devoted by the Italian Agency for New Technology, Energy and the Environment (ENEA), with the cooperation of several further members of the Italian Working Group on Seismic Isolation (GLIS), to the development, validation and application of innovative anti-seismic (IAS) techniques since 1988. To date, considered have been base and floor seismic isolation (SI), energy dissipation through various types of passive devices, hydraulic coupling by means of innovative shock transmitters, systems formed by shape memory alloy devices and more recently, semi-active control of vibrations. New activities at ENEA, which are in progress in the framework of both international and national collaborations, concern the development of new IAS techniques of the aforesaid kinds to be applied to: • civil structures and industrial plants; • cultural heritage structures (CUHESs) to be restored or reconstructed, or masterpieces to be seismically protected. Progress of the work performed for civil and industrial structures has been separately presented at this Conference, while this paper deals with the new development, validation and application activities concerning the IAS techniques applicable to the seismic protection of CUHESs, to which particular attention has been devoted by ENEA for several years. The ongoing activities for CUHESs are being performed in the framework of: • PROSEESM, a national project which foresees pilot applications of the IAS techniques to the restoration of CUHESs damaged by the 1997–98 Marche and Umbria earthquakes; • a feasibilily study for the reconstruction in the original site, with SI and the original masonry materials, of Mevale di Visso, a village in the Marche Region destroyed by the aforesaid event; • a study for the design and application of an innovative three-dimensional SI system for seismic and ambient vibration protection of a roman ship excavated at Ercolano, near Naples.

The “Valdilocchi Battery” in La Spezia, digital survey and documentation of an architecture on the edge of an epochAll the fortifications have their time. They respond to specific way of defending and attacking they change in time accordingly to the terrible habits of the weaponry and technology evolution. For a long time, from the age of the great fortifications, to the use of cannons, to the invention of the aerial war, the military built heritage have seen a long transformation made of sudden architectural changes, until the moment when the possibility of bombing and attacking from the sky signed the sunset of the large over ground buildings in favour of mimetic and underground structures. The “Valdilocchi Battery” belong to the last age of the large fortress, capable to resist to ground attack while showing the aspect of an inexpugnable stronghold. Sited on the top of a hill in the eastern part of the La Spezia gulf, this battery had the function of second line defense to control the neighboring valleys. The particular pentagonal plant and the state of excellent preservation, except for a part of collapse on the front of the gorge due to the German bombing, make it an artifact of great value.

Considered have been base and floor seismic isolation systems, energy dissipation systems consisting of various types of passive devices (elastic-plastic, viscous, visco-elastic and electro-inductive dampers), hydraulic coupling systems using innovative shock transmitters, systems formed by shape memory alloy devices and more recently, semi-active control systems of vibrations. New activities at ENEA, which are in progress in the framework of both international and national collaborations, concern the development of new IAS systems of the aforesaid kinds to be applied to: • civil structures (bridges, viaducts and buildings of various types) and industrial plants, in both cases to be constructed or seismically retrofitted; • cultural heritage to be restored or reconstructed, or masterpieces to be seismically protected. This paper focuses on the progress of the studies concerning the first kind of structures (SPIDER, SPACE, ALGA-DECS and ISI Projects), while that for cultural heritage has been dealt with in a separate paper presented at this Conference. In addition, some new projects involving ENEA, which were recently proposed to the European Commission and Italian Ministry for the Environment, are mentioned. The ENEA activities being performed for the above-mentioned projects take advantage of the collaboration of the Universities of Bologna and Ancona and “Studio Antonucci” consulting office. The most recent results of the numerical and experimental studies confirm the adequacy and benefits of the proposed systems for the construction or retrofit the various types of considered structures. Finally, it is worthwhile stressing that two further separate papers presented at this Conference deal with the main features and results of the 7th International Seminar on Seismic Isolation, Passive Energy Dissipation and Active Control of Vibrations of Structures (Assisi, Italy, October 2–5, 2001), which was organized by GLIS with the support of ENEA, and the series of films on the IAS techniques which have been produced in the framework of the MUSICA Project.

Generating design-enabled innovation implies the identification of social, technological, and cultural changes taking place nowadays and of the opportunities offered by the digital transformation, which enters these processes, playing an important role in all areas of contemporary life, from urban, domestic, health and services in general. In our era, the ambient intelligence pervades objects such as cities; electronic perception systems collect information and data from us, trying to understand our needs and give us answers. Cities are real living laboratories for experimenting new technologies on an urban scale.Big Data management represents one of the critical points of the ongoing revolution. The data can give information about people, understand behaviors, change city policies and so on. Big Data represent a qualitative leap in digital culture; nothing exists in Big Data before questions, explained De Kerckhove [1].“It is also and above all a cognitive revolution, where the answer no longer comes from the question. The large amount of data that comes from the pervasive use of technology already contains all the answers, but it has no value if it is not interrogated with the right questions. As McLuhan says, when all the answers are at hand, it's only the question that matters" [1].The perspective is then reversed: the first step in making society smarter is not to collect as much data as possible or develop an infallible algorithm, but it is necessary to identify the relevant expectations and needs in and for that society and ask the right questions, and to investigate what it represents, in the collective imagination, the quality of life and what technology can generate as a response. The project presented starts from the observation that we are faced with a strong migratory and global tourism flows that are affecting European cities, placing us in front of a growing multiculturalism in urban areas, with consequent issues related to the inclusion of cultural diversity and dialogue. The landscape of cities in many European countries has changed significantly, and the use of public space and services is no longer suited to the needs of multicultural citizens. This phenomenon has developed rapidly, without an adaptation of social policies, services, and spaces to emerging needs, creating evident problems of inclusion and dialogue between different cultures.Digital technologies and ubiquitous computing systems offer many opportunities for designing products and services aimed at increase interaction, collect, and share information, knowledge, emotions, experiences, through platforms that support the increase of social awareness. The research investigates how to use digital technologies and which design strategies and creative, communicative and process paths can be used to promote inclusion through interaction and communication between the different cultures that coexist in the same smart city context.Promoting interaction in public spaces, between citizens with different cultural backgrounds, becomes a crucial element to support social cohesion and to facilitate coexistence between different cultures. Opportunities to mix people in daily life reinforce shared values and goals. One of the best approaches that can be adopted for the design of new urban spaces and services is co-design, which indicates collective creativity as it is applied throughout a design process and involves all stakeholders, encouraging and supporting them to take an active role in this process.Following the indications of Findeli [2], this design research was carried out with the tools of design, and above all with its most original and specific characteristic, the project, developing in this specific case a pilot product-service.The project, funded within the H2020 framework program, made it possible to experiment with design tools to foster the engagement of different cultures present in the urban environment and encourage them to interact with each other, also including other types of stakeholders, from public administration to small/medium enterprises and to third sector associations. All the areas of cultural heritage, tangible, and intangible, where every culture has many stories to tell, have emerged as the most suitable areas for experimenting with new ways of interacting and communicating through which diversity can be encountered and compared. Five design for storytelling strategies guided the project: i) building relevance; ii) design for experience; iii) interactivity; iv) immersion; v) inclusion.[1] De Kerckhove Derrick, Psicologie connettive, Milano, Egea, 2014.[2] Findeli Alain, “Design research-Introduction”, Design Issues n. 15(2), 1999.
