This dissertation investigates (direct) object clitics and object omission in the acquisition of French as a first language. It reports on two original empirical studies which were designed to address aspects of object omission in child French that have remained unexplored in previous research. Study 1 investigates the incidence of object omission in the spontaneous speech of French-speaking children aged three and above, an age group for which no analysis, and only little data, have been available so far. Findings show that object omission continues to occur at non-negligible rates in this group. A comparison with age- and language-matched groups of English- and Chinese-speaking children (from Wang, Lillo-Martin; Best & Levitt 1992) suggests that French-speaking children omit objects at higher rates than their English-speaking peers, yet at lower rates than children acquiring a true null object language, such as Chinese. Study 2 was designed to investigate whether French-speaking children would accept null objects on a receptive task, an issue that has not been previously investigated. A series of truth value judgment experiments is developed, adapting an experimental paradigm that has not been used previously in the context of null objects. Results from English- and French-speaking children show that both groups consistently reject null objects on these tasks, a finding that constitutes counterevidence to proposals which attribute object omission in production to a genuine null object representation sanctioned by the child grammar. Overall, the pattern of results turns out not to be consistent with any developmental proposals made in the literature, suggesting that a novel approach is required. Proposing a minimalist adaptation of Sportiche's (1996) analysis of clitic constructions, and taking into consideration the recent emphasis on 'interface' requirements imposed by language-external systems, I put forward a hypothesis for future research, the Decayed Features Hypothesis (DFH), which locates the source of object (clitic) omission in child French in a specific language-external domain, namely the capacity of working memory.

This bachelor's degree concerns the specification of a new programming language. This language, called Sard, is a backwards-incompatible new version of the existing language Scala. Sard, like Scala, is a high-level object-functional language. Unlike Scala, it is not very closely tied to the JVM or Java, eliminating some constraints on the language's design. Since this necessitates breaking backwards compatibility with Scala, the opportunity to disregard it is used to x some of the author's irritations with the language. This degree mostly focuses on deciding on the exact changes to Scala, and on the overall design, rather than on implementing a compiler for the language. A reason for this is that the bachelor's degree provides insuficient time to properly implement´and debug a compiler. Another is the desirability of pushing changes to the language as early into the design process as possible. Preferably, almost all changes to the language should occur before any compiler code has been written. The design eventually produced gets rid of some known issues stemming from the JVM, like null pointers, non-reified generics and single inheritance. Several features of Scala, like self-type annotations and in x syntax for methods are scrapped. Others, like pattern matching, are generalized. Some changes to the syntax are also made, particularly in the areas of closures, pattern matching and object construction. As of yet, this language has no implementation, and in future work, this must be rectified. Sard also requires calling compatibility with another programming language, but this remains to be specified. Nevertheless, Sard constitutes a promising refinement of an already great programming language, and it is hoped that Sard will x the few remaining issues with Scala's design.

GU.
Within the generative theory of principles and parameters (Chomsky, 1981), empty categories are entities used in syntactic analyses so that certain language structures do not violate universal principles (Mioto, 2007). Brazilian Portuguese (BP) makes use of several of these categories in different structures, and one of the structures allowed by the language is the phenomenon known as object drop, or phonetically null objects. In studies of Second Language Acquisition (SLA), the theory of Full Transfer / Full Access (Schwartz & Sprouse, 1996) posits that the initial stage of the L2 is the final stage of the L1, but in finding structures that are not allowed by the L1 syntax, learners access the UG to reset parameters related to these structures. Considering BP is often learned after another additional language, hence being an L3, the Typological Primacy Model (TPM) proposed by Rothman (2010) claims that transfer will occur from the grammar of the language perceived as the most similar, even if transfer from another language would be more facilitative. The present study contains results of an acceptability judgment task with different structures in BP given to both Native speakers (n = 27) and BP learners (L1 Spanish, L2 English)(n = 15). It was expected that, because BP and Spanish are perceived as typologically closer, BP learners would transfer their knowledge from the L1 while evaluating the sentences in BP. The results show that Native speakers have different evaluations depending on the structure being tested, with null objects being preferred in Simple clauses, but no clear preference in structures with strong syntactic islands. The BP learners did not show any clear preference for null or overt objects in structures with strong syntactic islands, but showed preference for null objects in Simple clauses with [? definite] referents. Assuming FT/FA and the TPM, it seems that BP learners kept using the grammar from their L1 in evaluating some of the structures, while in other structures there seems to be some convergence on the target grammar, hinting at some level of access to UG.

The objective of this thesis has been to explore the value and limitations of Class, an object-oriented programming language, in order to further the development of the language. The pivot for this thesis is WallBrace, a code-checking system. The development of the WallBrace system is the basis of a critique of Class, and leads to a number of language extensions being proposed. An important aim in this work has been the careful integration of these enhancements with the rest of the language, avoiding unnecessary additions. A number of functional and object-oriented extensions to the language are proposed. Discrimination functions, which may be higher-order and polymorphic, add considerable functional power. Generic classes allow for abstract data types, such as sets and lists, to be defined within the language. The forms interface proposed will greatly enhance the quality of user interfaces to Class programs. An external interface will allow Class programs to communicate with files, databases, and specialist user-interface programs, such as for plan entry.

This thesis investigates the relationship between object-oriented programming languages and game models of computation. These are intuitively well matched: an object encapsulates some internal state and presents some behaviour to the world via its publicly visible methods, while a strategy for some game represents the possible interactions of a program with its environment. We work with a simple and well-understood game model. Rather than tailoring our model to match some existing programming language, we view the simplicity of our semantic setting as a virtue, and try to find the appropriate language corresponding to the model. We define a class-based, stateful object-oriented language, and give a heapbased operational semantics and an interpretation in our game model. At the heart of this interpretation lies a novel semantic treatment of the phenomenon of data abstraction. The model closely guides the design of our language, which enjoys an intermediate level of expressivity between that of first-order and general higher-order store. The agreement between the operational and game interpretations is verified by a soundness proof. This involves the development of specialised techniques and a detailed analysis of the relationship between the concrete and abstract views. We also show that definability and full abstraction hold at certain types of arbitrary rank, but are problematic at other types. We conclude by briefly discussing an extended language with a control operator, along with other extensions leading to a possible core for a more realistic programming language.

This thesis presents the Object Schema Model (OSM) for grounded language interaction. Dynamic representations of objects are used as the central point of coordination between actions, sensations, planning, and language use. Objects are modeled as object schemas -- sets of multimodal, object-directed behavior processes -- each of which can make predictions, take actions, and collate sensations, in the modalities of touch, vision, and motor control. This process-centered view allows the system to respond continuously to real-world activity, while still viewing objects as stabilized representations for planning and speech interaction. The model can be described from four perspectives, each organizing and manipulating behavior processes in a different way. The first perspective views behavior processes like thread objects, running concurrently to carry out their respective functions. The second perspective organizes the behavior processes into object schemas. The third perspective organizes the behavior processes into plan hierarchies to coordinate actions. The fourth perspective creates new behavior processes in response to language input.
(cont.) Results from interactions with objects are used to update the object schemas, which then influence subsequent plans and actions. A continuous planning algorithm examines the current object schemas to choose between candidate processes according to a set of primary motivations, such as responding to collisions, exploring objects, and interacting with the human. An instance of the model has been implemented using a physical robotic manipulator. The implemented system is able to interpret basic speech acts that relate to perception of, and actions upon, objects in the robot's physical environment.

A turn away from language and the human mind as the dominant (or only) determinants of reality can be identified within many disciplines, including anthropology, philosophy and literature, reflecting a growing acceptance of human and non-human, living and non-living entities as real, complex and partially withdrawn agents in the world. In Object Oriented Ontology the definition of object is extended to include humans, who have no special ontological status. Timothy Morton proposes rhetoric as a means of drawing closer to other objects, of contacting the ‘strange stranger’; objects cannot be known directly, or fully, but can be explored through imaginative speculation. Drawing on Object Oriented Ontology, my project explores making - an intimate engagement between body and material - as a means of thinking the body as a (strange) object within a mesh of strange objects. Facture is documented as image and language, prompting a series of shifting, speculative questions: • Can writing be brought to making to generate new new approaches to craft production? • How might writing in response to making, or objects, be reintroduced into a making process as a form of feedback? • Can writing_making methods generate new approaches to writing (about) making and materials? • How might a combination of production, documentation and reflection be displayed as artwork/research? • Can making be seen as a means for contacting the ‘strange stranger’?

The current trend in computation is one of concurrency and multiprocessors. Large supercomputers have long been eclipsed in popularity by cheaper clusters of small computers. In recent years, desktop processors with multiple cores have become commonplace. A plethora of languages, tools, and techniques for dealing with concurrency already exist. Where concurrency and multiprocessors meet modern, highly dynamic languages, however, is uncharted territory. Traditional distributed systems, however complex, tend to be simplified by assumptions of type consistency. Even in systems where types and not merely instances and primitive objects can be serialised and distributed, it is usually the case that such types are assumed to be static. The Python programming language, as an example of a modern language with highly dynamic types, presents novel challenges, in that classes may be altered at runtime, both through the addition, removal, or modification of attributes such as member variables and methods, and through modifications to the type's inheritance hierarchy. This thesis presents a system called PyRemote which aims to explore some of the issues surrounding type semantics in this environment.

The art of American Jasper Johns has been extensively studied within the realms of Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, and Neo-Dadaist movements. Yet his 1956 work Gray Alphabets, (1956) has not received scholarly attention. Not only is Gray Alphabets his first gray painting but also his first depicting the alphabet, which uses the established structure of the alphabet in order to subvert it. Johns does not alter the alphabet, rather, he distances its visual representation from an original concept. He creates this distance through the medium of encaustic, grisaille color palette, and a reorganization of individual letters within an established grid. These compositional choices provide the viewer with an ambiguous space with which to engage with the work. Johns challenges greater systems such as linguistics by means of this subversion. Johns supplants that the bond between visual and spoken languages is completely arbitrary by commenting on Saussure's notion that language is in itself arbitrary. While there is no author of the alphabet or language Johns' reorganization of such systems becomes a defiant gesture toward the convention of broad linguistic and pictorial systems. The viewer is enmeshed within a discursive schema that allows for one to challenge the making and meaning of language.

According to frame-based Constructivist accounts of language acquisition children learn to produce subject and object wh-questions in the same way as any other structure, namely by a gradual process of abstractions. These theories suggest children's early construction schemas are based around high frequency items in wh-questions and probabilistic relations between them. These accounts challenge the traditional Generativist theories of language acquisition according to which children possess an innate knowledge of how to produce wh-questions, but need to learn to apply it. This thesis aims to test these broad accounts empirically. Chapter 2 considers wh-questions in the context of these theoretical frameworks. Chapter 3 reports an experiment designed to determine whether verb frequency affects children's ability to produce subject and object wh-questions. Study 1 examines 3;11 and 4;11 year old children's ability to produce what- and who-questions. Results showed a significant effect of age, a significant effect of question type, no effect of the wh-word used (who vs. what), and no effect of verb frequency (familiar vs. novel verbs). Chapter 4 reports two further studies; Study 2 was designed to see if children younger than 3;11 would show an effect of verb frequency. Results showed a significant effect of question type but no main effect of verb frequency in the number of grammatical wh-questions produced, or in the errors. Study 3 was designed to see if the use of pronouns would influence children's ability to produce subject and object wh-questions. We found a significant effect of question type but no effect of verb frequency. Chapter 5 looks at the influence of animacy, pronoun ambiguity, and verb semantic class on children's ability to comprehend subject and object questions and to produce object wh-questions. We found evidence that both animacy and verb semantics can influence question production and comprehension. I conclude that a number of aspects of the results are broadly consistent with Constructivist frame-based accounts of wh-question acquisition, and error analyses undermine Generativist movement-based explanations.

Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a de-facto standard modeling language with an extensive syntax and notations that can be used to model systems of any kind. However, being a general-purpose language, its semantics are intrinsically under-specified and broad to leave a room for different interpretations. This, in general, hinders the ability to perform formal verification of models produced with a specific domain in mind. In these cases, it is usually more suitable to map the UML models to other domains, where modeling concepts have stricter semantics. Notably, Reactive Objects Language (Rebeca) is an actor-based language with a formal foundation and formal verification support. This paper aims to identify a subset of UML modeling concepts compatible with the domain of reactive and distributed systems as modeled in Rebeca. In this respect, this work proposes a conceptual mapping between a sub-portion of UML and Rebeca, with the goal of enabling formal verification early in the design process. In particular, we investigate Rebeca syntax, and for each Rebeca concept, we provide the corresponding concept in the UML, as part of an iterative process. This process ends when all Rebeca concepts are exhausted and comprehensive mapping procedure emerges. Additionally, validation is an important part of this paper as it aims to establish confidence in the developed mapping procedure (in post-conversion validation) and avoid doing the transformation if the design is not compatible with the mapping procedure (in pre-conversion validation). As part of the pre-conversion validation, in order to establish the compatibility with the mapping procedure, we provide an extensive list of correctness attributes. As part of the post-conversion validation, the mapping procedure is validated by transformation on the provided examples. The results of this transformation show the wide range applicability of the mapping procedure and serve as an assertion of its comprehensiveness.

FOOPS is a concurrent object oriented specification language with an executable subset. In this thesis we propose an extension of FOOPS with features for specifying systems of distributed and autonomous objects. This extension supports most features of concurrent object oriented programming, including classes of objects with associated methods and attributes, object identity, dynamic object creation and deletion, overloading, polymorphism, inheritance with overriding, dynamic binding, concurrency, nondeterminism, atomic execution, evaluation of method expressions as background processes, and object protection. The main contribution of this thesis is to develop a framework for supporting formal development of software in the extension of FOOPS mentioned above. In particular, we introduce a structural operational semantics for FOOPS, a notion of refinement for concurrent object oriented programs, congruence properties of refinement of FOOPS programs, and tools for mechanising refinement proofs. The operational semantics is the core of the formal definition of FOOPS. It is used to define notions of refinement for FOOPS states, programs, and specifications. Those notions and associated proof techniques for proving refinement are used to illustrate stepwise formal development of programs in FOOPS. The congruence properties of refinement (with respect to some of FOOPS operators) justify compositional development of software in FOOPS. The tools help to validate the framework introduced in this thesis and motivate its use in practice.

This thesis aims at investigating the presence and the evolution of objects in several novels by Alain Robbe-Grillet: Les Gommes, Le Voyeur, La Jalousie, Dans le Labyrinthe, La Maison de Rendez-vous and Djinn. Although that objects have an evident existence in Robbe-Grillet’s work, they have never been studied specifically, in details, and from a large corpus. The approach of our work is literary but it is also sociological. It is suitable to give objects the statute they occupy in human relations. In the light of the research of Abraham A. Moles, Jean Baudrillard, Bernard Blandin, among others, we have chosen to dwell on the relations that link humans to objects. After this “exploration”, we reach the following conclusion: the objects are sometimes mute and opaque, sometimes talking. These characteristics are obvious in the description techniques which the novelist uses

One central question I have explored in graduate school is “What is language?” I decided to explore language through creative research, seeking a new understanding through research writing and art-making. I set out to investigate language visually, materially and conceptually. Using the medium of printmaking, I distilled basic concepts from Linguistics into abstract form. I started by thinking about structural properties of language such as patterns that form words (morphology) and sentences (syntax), those patterns used fluidly by speakers of a language. Visually, the basic mechanics of morphology seem to reveal themselves as colour, shape and line, establishing patterns or breaking into fragments. Syntax becomes parts combining into a whole, with some combinations legible, some not and some more visually engaging. My experience of these concepts has been affected by formal language learning from textbooks, where rules stress what is “correct” or not. Yet, language in use is experience; fluent speaking happens without conscious attention to form. It is using and feeling, sometimes following and sometimes defying “the rules.” Language is also the unspoken; meaning is communicated by gesture, facial expression, and even by physical proximity in space, also called proxemics. The result of my research is three works of art, Morphology, Syntax and Proxemics, which I exhibited at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art in Kelowna, BC in June of 2013.

Object oriented software development is the main choice when developing business software today. For distributed storage of data they mostly use relational databases. The relational model however is not fully natural from an object oriented development perspective. The natural selection would be to use object oriented databases, however their development has not been as fast as their relational predecessors. The rise in popularity of smaller, fully object oriented languages such as Ruby and Python and open source projects developed with them are adding to the awareness of persistent object storage. This paper describes the current and future solutions for data storage in applications, their pros and cons and additionally shows an implementation of a native object persistence framework written in Ruby that supports indexing for self-optimizing.

The thesis underpinning this study is as follows; it is possible to build machine models that are indistinguishable from the mental models used by humans to generate language to describe their environment. This is to say that the machine model should perform in such a way that a human listener could not discern whether a description of a scene was generated by a human or by the machine model. Many linguistic processes are used to generate even simple scene descriptions and developing machine models of all of them is beyond the scope of this study. The goal of this study is, therefore, to model a sufficient part of the scene description process, operating in a sufficiently realistic environment, so that the likelihood of being able to build machine models of the remaining processes, operating in the real world, can be established. The relatively under-researched process of reference object selection is chosen as the focus of this study. A reference object is, for instance, the `table' in the phrase ``The flowers are on the table''. This study demonstrates that the reference selection process is of similar complexity to others involved in generating scene descriptions which include: assigning prepositions, selecting reference frames and disambiguating objects (usually termed `generating referring expressions'). The secondary thesis of this study is therefore; it is possible to build a machine model that is indistinguishable from the mental models used by humans in selecting reference objects. Most of the practical work in the study is aimed at establishing this. An environment sufficiently near to the real-world for the machine models to operate on is developed as part of this study. It consists of a series of 3-dimensional scenes containing multiple objects that are recognisable to humans and `readable' by the machine models. The rationale for this approach is discussed. The performance of human subjects in describing this environment is evaluated, and measures by which the human performance can be compared to the performance of the machine models are discussed. The machine models used in the study are variants on Bayesian networks. A new approach to learning the structure of a subset of Bayesian networks is presented. Simple existing Bayesian classifiers such as naive or tree augmented naive networks did not perform sufficiently well. A significant result of this study is that useful machine models for reference object choice are of such complexity that a machine learning approach is required. Earlier proposals based on sum-of weighted-factors or similar constructions will not produce satisfactory models. Two differently derived sets of variables are used and compared in this study. Firstly variables derived from the basic geometry of the scene and the properties of objects are used. Models built from these variables match the choice of reference of a group of humans some 73\% of the time, as compared with 90\% for the median human subject. Secondly variables derived from `ray casting' the scene are used. Ray cast variables performed much worse than anticipated, suggesting that humans use object knowledge as well as immediate perception in the reference choice task. Models combining geometric and ray-cast variables match the choice of reference of the group of humans some 76\% of the time. Although niether of these machine models are likely to be indistinguishable from a human, the reference choices are rarely, if ever, entirely ridiculous. A secondary goal of the study is to contribute to the understanding of the process by which humans select reference objects. Several statistically significant results concerning the necessary complexity of the human models and the nature of the variables within them are established. Problems that remain with both the representation of the near-real-world environment and the Bayesian models and variables used within them are detailed. While these problems cast some doubt on the results it is argued that solving these problems is possible and would, on balance, lead to improved performance of the machine models. This further supports the assertion that machine models producing reference choices indistinguishable from those of humans are possible.
