RESUME: Grâce à la rupture qu'il introduit avec le primat de la thèse aristotélicienne de l'être, le néoplatonisme constitue un terrain privilégié pour une enquête sur la problématique de la négation. En effet, personne n'ignore que l'avènement du néoplatonisme inaugure en Occident un mouvement intellectuel qui aboutit à une profonde rupture avec la philosophie première d'Aristote. Or cette rupture s'accompagne d'un bouleversement tout aussi important concernant le fondement de la négation et son rapport avec l'affirmation. Ce moment crucial de la pensée, où a eu lieu une première métamorphose du concept d'apophasis, est essentiel aussi bien pour l'appréhension que pour la saisie de l'originalité du concept de négation dans le néoplatonisme. Le modèle conceptuel développé par l’IFLA (Fédération internationale des associations de bibliothécaires et de bibliothèques) pour l’information bibliographique, FRBR, fait désormais partie de l’outillage intellectuel des bibliothécaires. La communauté muséologique a également développé un modèle conceptuel pour l’information quelle produit, le CIDOC CRM. L’article expose le travail accompli pour aboutir à un modèle conceptuel commun, de formalisme orienté objet compatible avec le langage RDF, dans la perspective du développement du Web sémantique, dans le cadre duquel une ontologie commune permettra d’exploiter simultanément l’information contenue dans les bases de données bibliographiques et muséographiques.

Les cardiopathies congénitales (CC) sont les malformations les plus fréquentes chez le nouveau-né. La littérature des dernières décennies a mis en évidence des retards développementaux fréquents dans cette population, notamment sur le plan de la motricité, du fonctionnement intellectuel global, du langage, de la mémoire, de l’attention et des fonctions exécutives. Le présent article propose une revue de littérature concernant la physiopathologie de ces retards et les facteurs susceptibles d’en augmenter les risques. Les profils neuropsychologiques associés à la présence d’une CC, ainsi que leur impact sur les acquisitions scolaires, l’adaptation comportementale et la qualité de vie seront présentés.

Personnage incontournable des sciences humaines en Russie et en Ukraine, Aleksandr Afanas’evič Potebnja (1835-1891) est mal connu dans le monde francophone. Le CRECLECO de l'université de Lausanne a voulu contribuer à combler une partie de cette lacune en rassemblant des spécialistes de cette question au bord du lac Léman en juin 2013. Le présent recueil rassemble les contributions du colloque. La diversité des approches et des points de vue faisait de cette rencontre une confrontation d’une grande richesse, où l’histoire et l’épistémologie comparée de la linguistique faisait entrer de plein pied la réflexion sur le langage en Europe orientale dans l’univers intellectuel francophone.

La «Nouvelle théorie du langage» était un ensemble intellectuel éclectique, dans lequel plusieurs thèmes dominants de la philologie russe du XIXème siècle était greffés sur des formules marxistes de surface. Cet article fait remonter les principes du marrisme à la Völkerpsychologie allemande de Steinthal et Lazarus, qui considérait la langue et le mythe comme l'expression de «l'âme du peuple». La Völkerpsychologie dominait la philologie russe pré-révolutionnaire, mais fut obligée de battre en retraite dans la période qui suivit immédiatement la Révolution. En son lieu et place, c'est une théorie du langage à la fois sociologique et protopragmatique qui fut progressivement mise en place. Marr essaya de manier les deux courants en remplaçant la catégorie de nation (narod, Volk) par celle de classe, ce faisant, il réhabilitait le courant précédent. Les successeurs de Marr prolongèrent cette tentative. Après le rejet des idées marristes en 1 950, cette façon d'envisager les choses se perpétua, à ceci près que la centralité de la classe fut à nouveau remplacée par celle de nation.

Frank Zappa est un des artistes les plus significatifs de notre époque. Pourtant, bien qu’il jouisse d’une grande estime à travers le monde, son oeuvre demeure encore largement méconnue tant des médias que des milieux artistique et intellectuel. Serait-ce dû à la position particulière du compositeur vis-à-vis de la culture contemporaine? En effet, son langage musical à la jonction de différents styles véhicule des connotations issues des sphères médiatique, visuelle, littéraire, industrielle et environnementale. Zappa a su manier avec la plus grande liberté les référents culturels tout en développant une stylistique très personnelle qui s’est affirmée tout au long de son parcours compositionnel. Cet article retrace les traits essentiels du style musical de Zappa à travers l’analyse d’une de ses dernières oeuvres. Il s’agit de la pièce pour Synclavier intitulée Dio Fa, extraite de son opéra Civilization Phaze III.

Dans La mémoire tatouée, Abdelkébir Khatibi subvertit le réel en le tressant au rêve, au fantasme et au drame, d’où l’enchâssement de plusieurs genres dans le roman (essai, poésie, théâtre). Essai et roman mettent en scène l’aliénation du colonisé et d’une génération entière, déracinée, et donc rivée à un double langage. La tentative du je consiste à représenter l’intellectuel colonisé pour s’insurger contre sa propre aliénation. L’autobiographie se dit par éclatement et par cris. Son analyse nécessite une bonne connaissance de la trajectoire de l’auteur afin de situer la prise de parole de l’écrivain dans le cadre de sa deixis sociale. Le présent article examine donc le parcours intellectuel de Khatibi en matière de dispositions, de positions et de prises de positions en vue de saisir le portrait autobiographique tel que transfiguré par l’auteur et par la tricherie de l’écriture.

Quand l’analyse écoute, il se tient au confluent d’influences contradictoires entre ce que les mots du patient brossent comme images et celles qui lui sont suggérées par sa propre imagination. Parler des images et s’ouvrir à ce langage spécifique est donc délicat, car les mots ne peuvent rendre compte pleinement de cette influence sensorielle. Aussi l’œuvre étonnante et polysémique d’Aby Warburg est une illustration bienvenue pour saisir dans les fragments des points de compréhension de la vie psychique en séance. Cette œuvre est née au début du xxe siècle et elle est contemporaine de la démarche freudienne. L’article se veut un parcours discursif qui suit le fil de ses productions en présentant d’abord un aperçu biographique et intellectuel puis en développant des éléments d’un lexique Warburg autour des concepts clés, pour envisager enfin les rapports possibles entre Freud et Warburg.

Avec l'irruption dans le langage commun du termepolitical correctness, la polémique anti-universitaire a trouvé aux États-Unis un second souffle. Dans son best-seller de 1987, le philosophe Allan Bloom avait déjà dénoncé l'emprise du relativisme intellectuel (et moral) sur les universités. Le pamphlet de Roger Kimball sur les « radicaux de la chaire »2, qui incriminait en 1990 la politisation des universitaires, ne paraît guère y ajouter : tout au plus Jacques Derrida remplace-t-il Nietzsche et Heidegger dans le rôle de corrupteur de la jeunesse ; et la menace ne semble plus cette fois venir du relativisme, mais au contraire du dogmatisme académique. Mais l'essentiel du changement réside ailleurs : il s'agit désormais deshumanités, plus que de l'humanisme ; et l'on est passé d'une apologie abstraite des valeurs occidentales à une défense pragmatique ducanon, corpus d'œuvres consacrées par la tradition.Le tir n'est donc plus concentré sur la philosophie de l'Université, mais sur sapolitique.

<p>Dans l'horizon intellectuel du début du XIXe siècle, on observe de nouvelles approches sur le paysage qui sont le corollaire du goût de l'époque pour l'exotisme et sa tendance au relativisme historique. Nous y assistons à "une poétique des ruines" dans laquelle les ruines, tout en perdant la fonction première pour laquelle ces constructions du passé avaient été conçues, font surgir tout un monde vivant dans un aujourd'hui fait de réminiscences. Edgar Quinet, en évoquant son séjour en Grèce, présente une réflexion sur l'hellénisme qui se caractérise par une longue et progressive appréhension des paramètres du monde grec en tant qu'entité culturelle, en rendant présente toute sa polyphonie historique et esthétique. Υ sa manière, il adopte l'optique herdérienne de l'intériorisation, mais à la différence de Herder, il n'abandonne pas tout à fait la perception extérieure des choses qui correspond à la raison des Lumières. Υ la suite de Georg Friederich Creuzer, son maître à Heidelberg, le jeune Quinet historicise le langage symbolique, et voit dans le symbole et le mythe un langage spontané. Il tend à comprendre la compénétration des arts et de la nature, et il choisit de retenir la configuration spatiale et de décrire les vestiges des monuments pour arriver au temps passé.</p><p> </p>

Dans l’histoire des théories énonciatives du XXe siècle, Charles Bally est l’auteur de la première « théorie générale de l’énonciation », bien que son nom ait été rarement évoqué par les théoriciens de ce champ. Dans le cadre de la réflexion sur l’articulation entre représentations et opérations chez plusieurs linguistes de l’énonciation, dans un rapport plus ou moins étroit avec une image saussurienne, nous envisageons d’éclairer les points les plus révélateurs qui ont conduit Bally de la stylistique à la théorie de l’énonciation, en poursuivant un fil qui va de la distinction entre « impressions » et « idées pures » (Précis 1905) à l’opposition affectif/intellectuel (Traité 1909), puis au traitement de l’expressivité linguistique en tant que mécanisme (Le langage et la vie 1926) pour arriver à la théorie de l’énonciation, où il définit la modalité. Dans ce parcours, nous évoquons son interprétation originale de concepts et de conceptualités saussuriennes, ainsi que la position de Saussure à l’égard du statut de l’affectif dans la linguistique.

Évoquer l’écriture poétique consiste, le plus souvent, à faire resurgir à la mémoire une somme de conventions artistiques établies d’âge en âge à travers les genres, les courants et les conceptions de la poésie. Malgré les révolutions et les bouleversements intervenus, l’art poétique se départit difficilement des cloisons génériques et théoriques pour le moins étanches. Cependant, l’actualité de la littérature française révèle que certains textes de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle semblent accorder une sorte de « vacance » à la poésie afin qu’il lui soit loisible de s’investir davantage dans l’autonomie langagière. Éros énergumène de Denis Roche illustre fondamentalement cette aptitude de l’écriture poétique à « se voir » comme telle et à se dématérialiser dans une perspective, somme toute, spiritualiste. Le poème de Roche s’appréhende, de ce fait, comme une voie d’accès à une forme de jeu intellectuel où le lecteur averti se retrouve englouti finalement dans les tourbillons d’un langage qui n’a d’autre enjeu que la liberté absolument « libérée ».

C’est surtout de Joan C. Tronto que les ambassadrices ducarese réclament en France, davantage que de Carol Gilligan. Je montre ici (partie 1) qu’unecertainetendancedu discours français sur lecarepeut être diagnostiquée comme le symptôme d’une culture désenchantée, dépouillant le monde non de ses dieux, mais de ses dimensions esthétique, artistique et imaginative. Le renversement que ce discours tend à opérer, de la figure morale de l’autonomie à celle de la vulnérabilité, illustrerait ce « symptôme ». C’est plus précisément l’idée ducarecomme « maintien du monde » (maintaining the world) chez Tronto que je critique (partie 2), puisque l’auteure exclut de ces activités les domaines esthétique, artistique et intellectuel. Je discute trois auteures ayant déjà critiqué cette notion decare(Barbara Koziak, Sophie Cloutier et Naïma Hamrouni), qui chacune font progresser mon propos vers ce que je considère être un oubli du monde « existentiellement » habitable chez la philosophe. Enfin je contribue à combler ce qui manque dans la théorie de Tronto (partie 3), soit un horizon esthétique et une réflexion sur le langage qui s’encastre dans une herméneutique du soi. Je me penche alors sur uncarequi consiste à veiller sur la « fragilité du langage politique » chez Paul Ricoeur. Je conclus que s’agissant de faire ducareune valeur publique à la fois féministe et soucieuse non seulement de la vie, mais aussi du monde, les activités artistiques, intellectuelles et éducationnelles sont de loin les plus efficaces, contrairement à ce que Tronto semble penser.

ObjectifComparer rétrospectivement la clinique de l’enfance et de l’adolescence d’une population d’adultes schizophrènes avec celle d’adultes bipolaires, afin de mettre en évidence des manifestations prémorbides et des prodromes plus spécifiques à l’une ou l’autre des pathologies.MéthodeDivers symptômes ont été recueillis dans les anciens dossiers pédopsychiatriques de 50 patients schizophrènes et de 50 patients bipolaires, grâce à une grille de recueil réalisée et évaluée par les auteurs. Ces symptômes ont ensuite été comparés entre les deux populations.RésultatsLa clinique de l’enfance du groupe schizophrène est marquée par un plus grand nombre de symptômes cognitifs tels qu’un Quotient Intellectuel bas, des troubles logicomathématiques, un retard de langage et des troubles de la concentration. L’énurésie et l’encoprésie semblent également plus spécifiques d’une évolution vers une schizophrénie par rapport à un trouble du spectre bipolaire. La clinique de l’adolescence du groupe schizophrène est marquée par un plus grand repli social, un quotient intellectuel bas et des troubles logicomathématiques. Les symptômes négatifs et positifs (éléments évoquant une discordance, bizarreries du comportement et des propos) sont des prodromes assez spécifiques de la schizophrénie par rapport aux troubles bipolaires. Les fluctuations thymiques constitueraient le seul symptôme réellement spécifique d’une évolution vers un trouble du spectre bipolaire par rapport à une schizophrénie.ConclusionLes phases prémorbide et prodromique de la schizophrénie se caractérisent par des symptômes psychocomportementaux qualitativement et quantitativement plus sévères que celle des troubles du spectre bipolaire.En outre, les troubles bipolaires et la schizophrénie semblent précédés, à l’adolescence, d’une phase prodromique constituée de symptômes déjà évocateurs de ceux caractérisant la pathologie à l’âge adulte mais dans une expression atténuée. Ceci marquant une continuité entre l’adolescence et l’âge adulte.

Le grand écrivain chinois Lu Xun (1881-1936) a considéré la traduction, dès le tout début de sa carrière littéraire, comme une partie intégrante de son activité et, à partir de 1909, comme l'outil le plus efficace pour rompre l'isolement culturel de la Chine et modifier le profil mental du citoyen chinois. A son avis, le contact avec la littérature étrangère entraînerait une modification des modes de pensée — et pas seulement des idées au sens de ce qui peut être appris ou inséré dans n'importe quel contexte —, modification qu'il jugeait indispensable au renouveau intellectuel et social de son pays. La capacité particulière de la traduction à atteindre les objectifs sus-indiqués est due au fait qu'il s'agit d'une opération linguistique qui influe, par conséquent, sur l'articulation même de la pensée. La traduction était, à son avis, un instrument de réforme du langage et, partant, guiderait la pensée chinoise vers des chemins nouveaux et plus féconds. L'article traite de la théorie de la "traduction dure" (yìng yì) de Lu Xun — une espèce d'"équivalence formelle" avant la lettre — et affirme qu'elle constitue une stratégie particulièrement intelligible dans le contexte du mouvement du quatre mai, caractérisé par un manque de confiance fondamental à l'égard de la culture chinoise traditionnelle dont le langage est un élément central. Toute démarche pour rendre une traduction "plus chinoise" aurait pour effet d'affaiblir le sens du texte étranger. La "traduction dure" se justifie pour des raisons pragmatiques (l'une des catégories proposées par Mme Dan Shen dans son article de Babel 34,3 (1989 p. 131-140), en raison du besoin urgent de changements culturels et sociaux qu'elle vise à satisfaire. En outre, esthétiquement parlant, la "traduction dure" tend à faire entre le lecteur dans le discours de la littérature occidentale et en particulier dans celui du réalisme occidental, une expérience inconnue en Chine et à laquelle Lu Xun attachait une très grande importance.

L’inspiration humboldtienne de la théorie linguistique d’Aleksandr Potebnja est une donnée évidente. On a également reconnu depuis longtemps la nécessité d’une évaluation détaillée du rôle médiateur de Heymann Steinthal, dont l’interprétation de la pensée de Wilhelm von Humboldt avait servi de fil conducteur à Potebnja. Malgré l’existence de nombreuses affinités entre Steinthal et Potebnja, on peut constater une considérable indépendance de celui-ci vis-à-vis de celui-là. En revanche, le thème de l’influence sur Potebnja de la part de Moritz Lazarus, collaborateur et ami personnel de Steinthal, n’a pas fait l’objet de sérieuses études jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Potebnja a cependant emprunté à Lazarus plusieurs notions de portée capitale dans l’économie de sa propre pensée théorique. Notamment, il y a lieu de croire que sa définition de la forme interne du mot a été influencée plutôt par Lazarus que par Steinthal. Potebnja a emprunté directement à Lazarus la notion de condensation de la pensée, s’en servant pour mettre le langage en relation avec les phénomènes relevant du développement des sentiments éthiques et esthétiques chez l’homme, ce qui permet de lancer un pont vers sa théorie du nationalisme tout comme vers sa théorie de l’art verbal. Certaines idées de Lazarus ont donc toujours fait partie de l’horizon intellectuel de Potebnja, lequel était bien conscient de leur origine.

Dans sa dernière livraison (n° 218, 2016), la revue L’Homme consacre notamment deux articles aux analyses fameuses que Jean-Pierre Vernant a naguère consacrées au mythe hésiodique des races. Le premier, «Jean-Pierre Vernant et l’analyse structurale. Le mythe hésiodique des races » , rédigé par Aurélien Gros, qui a récemment soutenu une thèse le 7 mars 2015 sous la direction de François Hartog et intitulée L’anthropologie historique de Jean‑Pierre Vernant. Enquête épistémologique, tente d’expliquer comment l’helléniste articulait de manière originale la psychologie historique d’Ignace Meyerson et l’anthropologie structurale de Claude Lévi-Strauss. Cette articulation serait à l’origine de l’anthropologie historique. Le second, «Le mythe hésiodique des races, oeuvre de langage. Jean‑Pierre Vernant et après » , écrit par Pierre Judet de La Combe, souligne l’intérêt qu’il y a à intégrer une dimension pragmatique à cette analyse structurale du mythe, c’est-à-dire à considérer l’intervention singulière d’Hésiode sur le matériau mythique. Or, lorsque sont rappelés le contexte intellectuel et académique des années 1950 et 1960 et les principes de l’analyse structurale lévi-straussienne des mythes, le rapport de Jean-Pierre Vernant au structuralisme apparaît comme critique. Derrière son «Essai d’analyse structurale » , l’helléniste proposait en réalité une démarche différente de celle de Claude Lévi-Strauss. À l’aune de ce qui apparaît surtout comme une analyse sociologique, le mythe des races, tout autant rapporté que composé par Hésiode, témoigne d’un temps présent conçu comme indéterminé duquel le poète tente de faire surgir un ordre, celui de la justice (dikê), dans un récit mythique rendant compte de la genèse et de la structure de son monde social.

Le concept de «forme interne» est un bon exemple de transfert et de mutation de concept lorsque, au sein de l’Europe, l’on passe d’une aire culturelle à une autre. Lorsqu’en 1927, Gustav Špet publie son ouvrage intitulé La Forme interne du mot. Etudes et variations sur des thèmes de Humboldt, l’usage qu’il fait de la notion de «forme interne» n’est emprunté à Humboldt que sur la base d’un travail conceptuel qu’il a déjà réalisé à partir de la réception d’autres oeuvres et d’autres courants en provenance d’Europe occidentale, et qui ont marqué le contexte intellectuel du début du XXe siècle. Ce que devient la «forme interne» dans l’oeuvre de Špet, à travers la présentation critique que le philosophe russe fait de Humboldt, n’est pas à envisager seulement sur la base des interprétations qui ont déjà été faites en Russie (en particulier, celle de Potebnia). Il faut aussi comprendre sur quelle base théorique et conceptuelle se fait cette critique, et revenir à la genèse de l’oeuvre et à l’évolution particulière de la pensée de Špet. Une telle approche, qui repose sur une forme spécifique de comparatisme n’a pas seulement le mérite de nous éclairer sur la ligne de fond qui traverse toute l’oeuvre du philosophe russe. Elle nous oriente aussi vers ce qui peut être considéré comme son innovation scientifique, et nous conduit,par voie de conséquences, à nous interroger sur l’actualité de son oeuvre, non plus seulement dans le contexte de la culture russe, mais dans celui de la philosophie du langage en général : dans quelle mesure cette oeuvre, resurgie de l’ensevelissement auquel elle avait été condamnée pendant des décennies, est-elle apte à participer au renouvellement actuel des sciences humaines ?

Un texte n’existe que dans la mesure où il est lu et ses différentes lectures contribuent à en montrer la richesse et l’intérêt. En France on a longtemps lu et on continue encore à lire Fanon, en particulier Les damnés de la terre, à la lumière de la préface que Sartre avait rédigée, à la demande de Fanon lui-même, après une rencontre et d’intenses discussions entre les deux hommes au printemps 1961 à Rome. Le premier chapitre des Damnés de la terre, intitulé “De la violence” avait été publié séparément dans les Temps Modernes, la revue dirigée par Jean-Paul Sartre, comme s’il s’agissait là de l’essentiel de ce livre. Il y a eu depuis beaucoup d’autres lectures de l’œuvre de Fanon, et en particulier de ce livre difficile et complexe. Je voudrais m’attacher, dans les pages qui vont suivre, à la lecture faite par Edward Said des textes de Fanon tout au long de sa carrière, à partir du moment, où, à la suite de la guerre de 1967 entre Israël et les pays arabes, et l’occupation de la Cisjordanie et de Gaza, ainsi que l’annexion de la partie Est de Jérusalem, Said va mêler intimement élaboration théorique et agir politique. Il est d’autant plus intéressant, d’un point de vue français, de porter attention à cette lecture, que Fanon aussi bien que Said, sont largement marginalisés dans le champ intellectuel et universitaire. Ils sont l’un et l’autre le symptôme d’une tache aveugle dans la pensée française dominante, peu encline à analyser le phénomène colonial. Il ne s’agit pas seulement des lacunes de l’histoire coloniale, qui commence tout juste à se développer. Le regard porté par Frantz Fanon sur la colonisation française en Algérie est difficilement supportable dans un pays qui se veut la “patrie des droits de l’Homme” et des valeurs universelles, tout comme la mise en évidence du racisme dans la France des années 1950. Ce qui semble encore davantage difficile à admettre, c’est que la domination coloniale puisse concerner aussi les catégories intellectuelles, les productions de l’imaginaire, et la construction des subjectivités. Lors de la parution, en 1980, de la traduction française d’ Orientalism, la levée de boucliers contre l’ouvrage fut telle qu’il fallut attendre vingt-cinq ans pour une nouvelle édition du livre qui était devenu introuvable. Entre temps Edward Said était mort, et sa notoriété internationale telle qu’il était impossible de continuer à faire comme si cet ouvrage avait cessé d’exister. On peut naïvement s’étonner d’une telle réaction, en face d’un livre dans lequel il est largement question d’écrivains et de savants français, et qui surtout a été écrit en partie dans le sillage intellectuel de Michel Foucault. Said avait cependant déjà pris, à cette époque, des distances avec la théorie foucaldienne, en s’appuyant sur d’autres théoriciens, au premier rang desquels Fanon. L’importance qu’il accordait à Fanon était antérieure. En effet, dans Beginnings, son premier ouvrage important de théorie littéraire, qui précédait Orientalism, Said avait déjà situé Fanon parmi ceux qui, avec Freud, Orwell, Lévi-Strauss et Foucault, avaient contribué à la production d’un “langage mental commun.”

Abstract This paper investigates intellectual discourse in China during the COVID-19 coronavirus crisis through two discourse analyses, aiming to see the role of intellectuals in leading public discussion and perception on government decisions in times of crisis. Digital ethnography and digital discourse analysis are implemented to do a micro and in-depth analysis of texts and the media engagement of the Chinese intellectuals. In the context in which the presence and reception of public intellectuals in China has been transformed from pro-West gongzhi (公知) to intellectuals in the system (体制内), this study reviews the moral values and norms that promoted governmental policies and social coherence embedded in a new intellectual discourse. It contributes to the analysis of the dynamics and flexibility of China’s public communication in times of crisis within the social context in which online activities and offline realities are closely bonded in modern China.

Introduction. The author believes that the relationship between power and intellectuals can range from the active participation of the intelligentsia in politics to the disillusionment of the intellectual community in politics and in the ruling elites. The author analyzes the process in Georgian contexts. It is assumed that politics as a process has ceased to attract public interest, despite a dynamic political life. Purpose. The purpose of the article is to analyze the process of public disillusionment with politics in the modern Georgian intellectual community. Methods. Methodologically, the article is based on the principles of analyzing intellectual communities with the elements of the universal method of historicism and a comparative approach, which make it possible to identify and systematize the main features of the process of depoliticization of Georgian society. Scientific novelty. The author presents a new interpretation of the role of intellectuals in the processes of social disappointment in politics, based on the analysis of original sources in the Georgian language. Results. It is presumed that 1) Georgian intellectual community in the second half of the 2000s began to lose active interest in its own participation in politics; 2) political parties are also forced to acknowledge the crisis of loyalty because the elites and society develop independently, and their interests coincide rarely; 3) culture became an alternative project that attracts civil society more than real politics; 4) the active political participation of the Church assists to the erosion of political culture, forcing intellectuals to become disillusioned with politics, perceived as a clannish and corrupt sphere of activity. Conclusions. It is shown that disillusionment with politics in the second half of the 2000s and the gradual migration of intellectuals to cultural practices replaced the politicization of intellectual communities, which determined the main vectors of Georgian development in the previous period.

This paper attempts to analyze the complexities of the relationship between the radical Arab intellectual and political power in modern times through the examination of three cases—those of Taha Hussain, Al-Jawahiry, and Edward Said. Spanning the course of the whole of the twentieth-century, the careers of these three key, radical Arab intellectuals offer illustrative and illuminating examples of the relationship between political power and intellectuals in the Arab world generally. Although there are important differences between the three key figures—with Taha Hussain being the major example of the pioneering Arab intellectual of the early decades of the twentiethcentury, the period of the Arab intellectual awakening, Al-Jawahiry, the exemplary political poet and intellectual and key leader in a mass political movement, and Edward Said, the exemplary Arab radical intellectual in exile who achieved international prestige and prominence—they share particularly illuminating similarities in the way they dealt or had to deal with political authority. While they largely reflect the changing historical conditions of early, middle, and late twentieth-century Arab socio-political and cultural conditions, the careers of these three figures also express, most deeply and extensively, themes that are common to generations of Arab intellectuals. In addition to the issue of coming to terms with political power, these themes include harmonizing local culture with international culture, the homeland and the attachment to place, and the issue of exile and identity. The paper will attempt, finally, to draw from the examination of these three cases, conclusions that may be of relevance to the study of the relationship between intellectuals and authority in Arab society generally, and perhaps even to the theoretical framework within which such relationships are usually studied. It is hoped that the deeper scrutiny of the specificity of the Arab situation may also help to expand the frontiers of theory..

This study explores the life story and works of Tawfiq Wahbi, an Ottoman-Kurdish military, political, and intellectual figure. Born in Sulaimaniya in 1891, Wahbi received his education in Sulaimaniya, Baghdad, and İstanbul. He became a captain in the Ottoman army. He served as a minister and senator in Iraq. Following the 1958 Revolution, he settled in Great Britain, where he died in 1984. Wahbi is mostly known for his studies onthe Kurdish language. He contributed to Kurdish, Arabic, and English literary, cultural, and academic journals. The first study devoted to Wahbi’s intellectual biography in English, this article suggests that his scholarly interest was mainly shaped through his knowledge of and active engagement with European Orientalist scholarship. This paper suggests that Wahbi’s intellectual journey can be fittingly analyzed with reference toArif Dirlik’s use of the concept of “contact zone,” developed in the context of the relationship between Euro-American Orientalists and Bengali and Chinese intellectuals. In other words, Wahbi’s access to European languages and the scholarship produced in these languages in general, and his collaboration with British Orientalists in particular, seem to have been crucial in his endeavor of reforming Kurdish.

I was introduced to the term public intellectual almost twenty years ago when I was an undergraduate in a literary course on African American music taught by the cultural critic Farah Jasmine Griffin. The class conversations began with readings of jazz and hip-hop artists as “organic intellectuals” in the sense developed by Antonio Gramsci. We quickly moved to the debates sparked by Edward Said's Representations of the Intellectual (1993) and to the rise of the black public intellectual as demonstrated by the formation by Henry Louis Gates, Jr., of an academic “dream team” in African American studies at Harvard, Cornel West's publication of Race Matters (1994), and Robert Boynton's March 1995 article in the Atlantic entitled “The New Intellectuals,” which added Toni Morrison, Stanley Crouch, Patricia Williams, Michael Eric Dyson, Derrick Bell, June Jordan, and many others to that category. By the time I arrived at Harvard in 1999, for graduate study in African American literature, the idea of the black public intellectual served as a backdrop and a blueprint for how my generation of scholars could live inside and beyond the campus walls. As beneficiaries of that era, my peers and I did not necessarily have to prove that our work belonged in the public; instead, we had to wrestle with newer questions of format and forum in the digital age.

This article analyses the post-First World War emergence of intellectual relief. This is defined here as aid given to intellectuals and scholarly institutions. Relief included the provision of food and medicines to individuals as well as the supply of relevant scholarly literature and laboratory equipment to academic institutions. After 1918, significant humanitarian interventions targeted Central and Eastern Europe, which had been ravaged by war and its myriad consequences. The article argues that intellectual relief, while frequently using the language of the “crisis of civilization,” was part of the broader effort to safeguard the postwar liberal democratic order against Bolshevism. The article pays particular attention to the League of Nations' Committee on Intellectual Cooperation (CIC) to show how states like Hungary used intellectual deprivation to agitate for treaty revision. It argues that the CIC's development was shaped by the wider dynamics of intellectual relief.

Focusing on Wang's activities in the southern province of Guangxi in 1528 (particularly his "pacification" of the native domain of Tianzhou as well as his military campaign against the "Yao bandits" in the Rattan Gorge area), this essay explains not only how Wang dealt with the perceived problems of the "non-Chinese" (man, yi, etc.) but also how his approaches should be understood in terms of the inner logic of his thoughts as well as the intellectual and political debates of his time. Is it possible to think about God without anthropomorphizing him? The fact that God has both anthropomorphic and non-anthropomorphic characteristics adds to theological confusion. Individual variances in God's views might be a reflection of how individuals understand God's portrayals. Intellectuals have argued for ages that theistic conceptions of God are excessively anthropomorphic, perplexing, and complex. The paper focused on religious language and God’s anthropomorphic identities. It employed a historico-comparative approach using library resources. The finding provides light on the limitations and potential of philosophico-religious transmission of the complex idea of anthropomorphism and offers a critical, constructive, and interpretive avenue for intellectual dialogue.

In the field of English Language Teaching (ELT), attention has been shifted toward the alternative role of teachers as transformative intellectuals whereby transformation in teaching occurs from control and technical operations to criticism and intellectual reflection. This role enables teachers to focus on marginalized students’ lived experiences and worlds to transform them into active and critical citizens who are emancipated to develop their voices and question the status quo. Through critically examining the learning milieu that maintains injustice and inequality, students struggle to connect it to sociopolitical conditions in wider society, and eventually transform it to meet the desired ideologies and thinking. This paper attempts to scrutinize teachers’ role as transformative intellectuals and their challenges through the transformation process. Thus, the researcher used purposive sampling to select 26 teachers in four private language institutes of Tehran, Shiraz, and Yazd, Iran to adopt the role of transformative intellectuals based on theoretical principles and concepts of critical pedagogy. Semi-structured interview and an online focus group were used to collect data. Data analysis disclosed transformations and benefits as well as the challenges resulting from teachers becoming transformative intellectuals. The fruitful findings of this study are insightful, since this study is an example to show how language teachers can create transformation in the EFL context, change their fossilized role, and empower oppressed students within the institutionalized and oppressive system of schooling.

As recent research has amply demonstrated, we gain a much better understanding of medieval and early modern culture if we recognize the full extent to which people used different languages, interacted with each other nevertheless across language barriers, and exchanged ideas through many different linguistic channels. In some regions in Europe the contacts among various language speakers was higher, in others lower, much depending on the cultural, economic, and political conditions. The English intellectual elite, for instance, was often trilingual; all European intellectuals were at least bilingual (Latin and a vernacular), and many people spoke the courtly language and their local dialect, which is actually the case until today all over the world.

Abstract This article addresses how some influential Indian Muslim intellectuals conceptualized and imagined the Urdu language as the linguistic offspring and heir of the Persian language and Persianate textual cultures from the late nineteenth century through the early 1950s. As the symbolic and material value of Persian gradually declined in India, select Persianate idioms, genres, and histories were drafted for Urdu’s modernity. This article considers the significance of Persian as it was variously construed as either a burden or a model by Urdu scholars and as either a worthy or unworthy predecessor for Urdu from the 1890s to the 1950s. It traces the shifting textual processes by which three prominent Indian Muslim intellectuals constructed a parent-offspring relationship between Persian and Urdu in response to colonial education reforms, competing national projects, and pan-Islamic intellectual currents. In summary, this article excavates the many uses that Persian served as it was simultaneously erased from and encoded into Urdu’s anticipated futures.

This article seeks to understand Muhammad Shahrur as a contemporary Muslim intellectual in the twentieth century. This finding suggests that Muhammad shahrur was a controversial scholar among Intellectual Muslim. Some allegations led him as the most popular intellectual in this century. A series of books written came to support as well as to counter his ideas on al-Qur’an. This paper review the initial exploration of Muhammad Sharur's work on interpreting al-Qur'an. Besides demonstrating the biography of Muhammad Shahrur, especially, his academic background, the author also reviews at least three important books written by Muhammad Shahrur which become the main issue of this article. Those three books generate a revolutionary idea, especially how to interpret al-Qur'an from a different perspective. Through science methodology as well as language proficiency, Muhammad Shahrur presents the new face of interpreting al-Qur'an. He attempted to read al-Qur'an with the current way of thinking without looking back at the legacies (turats) of Muslim intellectuals.

Abstract This article focuses on the Arabic manuscript collection of the Near Eastern School of Theology (NEST). The NEST library contains several manuscripts that were donated, copied, or read by important Christian-born intellectuals of the nahḍa. Given these men’s role in the emergence of modern publishing in the Middle East, I examine the intersections between their scribal and printing activities. I also discuss works of grammar, logic, and rhetoric in the NEST’s collection. Most of these are by late medieval and early modern authors and contain extensive commentaries and glosses. This commentary culture was a key site of learning throughout the early modern Ottoman Empire and endured among Christian as well as Muslim intellectuals of the nahḍa movement. The persistence of these scribal and intellectual traditions reveals a longue durée of Islamicate scholarly traditions that is only beginning to be understood by historians of Arab modernity.

This essay places Louisiana Creole culture and identity into comparative perspective with the evolution of Creole identity and créolité in Haiti and the French Antilles. While Haitian and Antillean intellectuals wrestled at the crossroads of French and African culture over the course of the twentieth century, the leading intellectuals of Louisiana’s Creole society were more likely to embrace French language and culture than to work self-consciously to integrate African influences into their understanding of themselves. A similar kind of cultural reckoning did not occur among Louisiana Creole writers and intellectuals until late in the twentieth century. The essay uses a comparative approach to examine the factors that have led to Louisiana taking such a different approach to Creole identity and cultural expression and considers how the community may evolve in the years to come. Cet essai situe la culture et l’identité créoles louisianaises dans une perspective comparée avec l’évolution de l’identité créole et de la créolité en Haïti et aux Antilles françaises. Lorsque des intellectuels haïtiens et antillais travaillaient au carrefour des cultures française et africaine au parcours du vingtième siècle, les intellectuels du chef de file de la société créole de la Louisiane tendaient plus à engager la langue et la culture françaises que de chercher à intégrer consciemment les influences africaines dans leur conception identitaire. The article examines the methodological problems of the historical-philosophical research of the “Soviet philosophy.” The process of the emancipation of thinking is examined through the analysis of the tradition of the Alushta Schools of Young Philosophers in 1987–1993. These schools played a historically significant role in overcoming the prejudices and stereotypes of the Soviet consciousness by the Ukrainian philosophical community. The mentioned analysis led to a few conclusions regarding the methodology of historical-philosophical research of the intellectual legacy – primarily texts – of the Soviet era. (1) Soviet philosophy was certainly an anti-philosophy, a social machine of anti-thinking. (2) The basis of analyzing both texts and events of this philosophy should consider the phenomenon of doublethink – two simultaneous and parallel spaces of discourses’ (meanings’) existence. Doublethink reflects the situation when ideological officialdom, loyalty to which was necessary, and the opposing desire for true thinking coexisted. (3) This collision led to the development of and was characterized by a number of features: the “Aesopian language,” peculiar regimes of private trust, intellectual reservations, etc. The article corroborates that the change in the dynamics of the intellectual situation (language of philosophy, mode of communication, communities of intellectuals, ethos and ideals of scientific research, etc.) is the main subject of historical-philosophical research.

Abstract As intellectuals in modern education systems, “we are all foreigners,” foreign to our histories, local conditions, and commoners living next to us. The proposal for a global Bandung School (BS) has been on the table, with the mission to transform existing modes of thought and carry on the de-imperializing spirit of Bandung. By establishing Mandarin-World Bandung School (MBS), we propose to rediscover the spirit of anti-imperialism through locally grounded praxis and renewed intellectual trusteeship. De-imperialization is possible. The communication field shall be a critical site for global transformation beyond “coloniality.”

This article aims to present the South Vietnamese intellectual field in the aftermath of decolonization. It is a question of examining the agents and instances in a postcolonial social space from a chronological and relational point of view: philosophers, professors, journals, universities… These sets often consist of a system of sharing and relationships in ‘position raking’ and construction of symbolic capital. We will particularly observe the ways in which South Vietnamese intellectuals treat western philosophical thoughts as a privileged object to structure the intellectual field and to establish their power and vision in this space. This questioning thus aims to reregister the Vietnamese intellectual field in a perspective of western cultural transfers.

This essay uses a case study of Lin Shu (1852-1924) and(1876-1924) to argue for an approach to world literature called “reading distance.” Through a close reading of Lin Shu's andtranslations of Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre'sPaul et Virginie (Paul and Virginia)into Chinese and Arabic and a consideration of their work as translators and intellectuals, the essay reads between peripheries—places like Cairo and Beijing—to understand how intellectuals in those places grappled with difficult questions concerning translation, language reform, and changes in reading publics. By thinking with models of distant reading but also engaging with materials that are usually excluded from those models, the essay examines an important point of overlap in the intellectual and cultural histories of the Arab and Chinese enlightenments of the early twentieth century.

Present perceptions about the poor production of university students in the last decades might be the same other professors had in previous centuries. Nonetheless, more corseting forms of assessment and the irruption of new technologies can establish a difference. These factors serve the controversy when blamed for preventing intellectual development, or when also considering that ICTs are the personal mark of new generations of youths who face their outdated dinosaur teachers.
The purpose of this paper is to provide a tentative case analysis of the situation to validate what seems a generalized perception of the decay of tertiary education. Our data will be obtained from answers that students of the third year of a Humanities English degree could not provide. In our approach we will consider the difficulties students have in reaching the highest levels of taxonomies like Bloom’s (1956) or Dreyfus & Dreyfus (1980) with their further modifications. Collaterally we will tackle key competences and forms of assessment. Results will present the dichotomy of maintaining the present progression or, alternatively, think again and take some action.

Every nation needs an external assistance if it hopes to gain and build its own state. However, such support is not possible without some well-formed image of this country or territory in the intellectual and political circles of the state that demonstrates nation fighting for independence. Therefore, it seems important to trace the evolution of Ukraine’s image in the intellectual discourse of one of the most powerful countries in the world, namely the United Kingdom. The article deals with the evolution of the image of Ukraine in the intellectual discourse of the British Empire during the First World War. The analysis is based upon a wide range of English-language sources, primarily scientific works of English-speaking intellectuals of the British Empire of that time, who tried to analyse the current situation in Cental and Eastern Europe (J. Raffalovich, A. Toynbee, R. Seton-Watson) and also Ukrainian emigrants, who wanted to inform British public with the Ukrainian vision of events (V. Stepankivsky). All this happened against the backdrop of the attempts of the representatives of the Ukrainian national liberation movement to convey their position to the world, as well as the competition of other states and politically ideological concepts for the right to control Ukrainian lands. Changes in the perceptions of the British intellectuals about Ukraine are influenced by various geopolitical factors, and a general assessment of the awareness of the British elites about the Ukrainian issue is made.

AbstractThis dialogue on thought and language is a sequel to my dialogue ‘Thought and Thinking’, but can be read independently of it. The five disputants are the same as in the previous dialogue, namely Socrates; an imaginary neuroscientist from California (whose opinions reflect those of contemporary cognitive neuroscientists); an Oxford don from the 1950s (who employs the linguistic analytic techniques of his times); a Scottish post-doctoral student; and John Locke (who speaks for himself). The discussion takes place in Elysium in the early evening after dinner. They discuss the relationship between what one thinks and what one says, examine the reasons for supposing that there must be a language of thought and show why there cannot be one, investigate the supposition that thought must have a medium – that one must think in something (words, ideas, pre-linguistic concepts) – and demonstrate that it cannot have one. They investigate whether there can be non-linguistic thinking and whether non language-using animals can be said to think, and determine the limits of thought and thinking.

The aim of this paper is to review the history of Chinese language education in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia, and state the tortuous and difficult processes that intellectuals had to go through to pass on the torch of Chinese language education in a changing world. Based on Ch’ien Mu, Lin Yutang, and Shen Muyu's stories for promoting Chinese language education after 1949, this paper states how intellectuals implemented Chinese language and humanistic spirit into the education systems in foreign lands, as well as how they put into practice their care for lives and passed on the torch of Chinese language education. Ch’ien Mu established an academic institution in the British colony. He had to face the fact that mainland China abandoned the tradition at the time and he put all his efforts into saving the critical situation, which should not only be regarded as a legend in a poverty situation, but we shall also carefully study how he valued the importance of literature, humanity and general education. It is not difficult to realize from the frustration of Ch’ien Mu and Lin Yutang that the risk and chaos of Chinese descent had been encountered under the political culture of colonization and foreign countries. The ideological state apparatus always utilizes a variety of mobilization methods to integrate culture and ideas for homogeneity. With its characteristics and resistance force, the torch of the Chinese language is indeed not easy to be passed on, unless the intellectuals were able to be united to fight ceaselessly with sufficient forces from the society. Moreover, Shen Muyu represented a glimmer of light on a dark rainy night. Based on the awareness of protecting fundamental rights, Shen combined the strength from the education industry, business industry, and communities to conduct a long-term fight to empower Malaysia to become the country with the most comprehensive Chinese language education system outside mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. It is obvious that passing on the torch of Chinese Language is not a matter of course, but instead, the spark of literature can only be ignited through the processes of the fierce argument between intellectuals and education environment, political culture and intellectual power, along with their dedicated beliefs, ideas, and persistence.
