Abstract The ever-growing expansion of Kiswahili as a lingua franca has depreciated the status of other languages in Tanzania and the ethnic verbal arts embedded in them. This includes proverbs. The disappearance of ethnic proverbs is unfortunate because proverbs serve several functions in society, including imparting wisdom and representing a culturally inherited worldview. Efforts to mainstream them into Kiswahili proverbial performances, the practical approach to rescue them from disappearing, have been relatively unsuccessful because translated ethnic proverbs lack proverbiality. Consequently, they cannot be mainstreamed into the Kiswahili proverb repertoire. In this paper, I argue that in order to deal with this problem, existing ethnic proverbs should be collected and translated into Kiswahili and finally fleshed out with aesthetic Kiswahili devices. Kiswahili proverbial features would enable them to gain immediate acceptance among Kiswahili speakers. In so doing, the endangered verbal art will be preserved.

Abstract The wave of globalization and the attendant acculturation has uttered the contextual and conceptual rendition and meaning of traditional Igbo proverbs. In view of the fact that proverbs are wisdom from the elderly that reveals the peoples’ values, ethics, morals and worldviews. Therefore, the modernized versions of Proverbs attest to the fact of lack/loss of the ancient fervour. This paper attributes the loss of ancient morale to youth incursion and the consequent travesty of the proverbial space. It therefore, contends that Igbo postproverbial is a reaction to acculturation engendered by human interaction. Twenty-one pairs of Igbo proverbs made up of, the traditional proverb and its postproverbial version were subjected to critical analysis focusing on the culture dynamics in the construction of the postproverbials. The analysis of data is anchored on Herbert Blumer’s theory of symbolic interactionism. The paper establishes that Igbo postproverbial is a reaction to culture diffusion occasioned by human interaction and the accompanying changes in values, morals and worldviews.

Objective. The objective of the article is to investigate how such language genres as "sententia", "catchphrases", "maxim", "aphorism", "epigram", "slogan", "anti-proverb" differ using examples from German and Ukrainian. Methods. The main scientific results are obtained using a complex of general scientific and special research methods, namely: descriptive (to explain the concepts of phraseology and various phraseological units), linguistic-cultural and comparative methods (to identify and classify proverbs, sayings and idioms according to their semantic characteristics), comparative analysis (when working with proverbs, sayings and idioms in German and Ukrainian languages). Results. Proverbs, sayings, as well as religion and mass media have a great influence on the formation of public opinions and, above all, stereotypes. In the process of translating a literary text with these phraseological units, the problem is to choose a proverb or a saying in another language that would most accurately convey not only the meaning, but also the emotional colouring, stylistic and national-ethnic components. Another problem that arises in the process of translating proverbs and sayings, various idioms is that it is not individual words that should be translated, but the whole meaning. In the work, an attempt is made to give definitions and conceptual explanations of various language genres, which are often confused, such as "sententia", "catchphrases", "maxim", "aphorism", "epigram", "slogan", "anti-proverb" using examples from the German and Ukrainian languages. In some cases, it is possible to find full or partial equivalents, but most often the authors apply descriptive translation with explanations. This is explained primarily by the fact that the difference between idioms, sayings and proverbs is especially noticeable in their structure. Proverbs refer to complete statements and constitute fixed mini-texts. And only thanks to this property they can be cited. In contrast, proverbs and idioms have an open structure. <p class="Keyword"><span lang="FR">The translation of proverbs is not a simple activity. Translators still face problems. They must transfer the message so that the right translation will be done without change or eliminate the principles of the proverbs being moral and culture.&nbsp; This translation arises not only at the problems of a lack of direction and forms of the Indonesian proverb, but also those of the type of proverbs. From these problems, we analyzed the problems to discover good ways to translate. The data is collected from a well-known French fable, "<i>Les Fables de La Fontaine</i>" from 1668 to the 1678. Fourteen titles of fables have been chosen and sixteen proverbs were founded. Using Nida and Taber’s theory of translation that is developed by Hoed and Mona Baker’s paraphrase strategy, proverbs were translated and analyzed. This research gives us steps to translate French proverbs in Indonesian. There are three relevant elements that translators must take into account. Firstly, is to find key words, two words maximum, whether a word or a phrase. Secondly, be careful to choose Indonesian proverbs as they are sometimes different than those of source language. And thirdly, we must also keep the consistency of the translated text.</span></p>

Banjar proverb is one of the old literary works that are still familiar in Banjar ethnicity. However, the lack of knowledge about the material lexicon that reflects past culture makes it difficult to understand the purpose or the aim of using material lexicon in Banjar proverbs. The old culture material lexicon is a noun contained in Banjar proverb that can provide an overview of the ethnic culture (customs) of the ancient Banjar or the past. The purposes of this study are (1) to classify the material lexicon that reflects the past culture in Banjar proverb, (2) to describe the material lexicon that reflects the past culture in the Banjar proverb. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data are in the form of a lexicon of past culture material in Banjar proverb. Data are collected from the literature study. The results of this study indicate: (1) material lexicons that reflect a past culture in Banjar proverb include: (a) the objects used at home, (b) the objects used in rivers, and (b) the objects used for farming. (2) cultural reflection of the past in Banjar proverb is realized in the form of metaphorical material. The use of a metaphor of material in Banjar proverb is a form of Banjar cultural depiction. The material lexicon in Banjar proverb is a small part of the wealth of Banjar language which full of past culture, a culture that has already left by Banjar ethnic.

We investigated completion phenomenon for proverbs in cases demonstrating transcortical sensory aphasia due to a variety of diseases. Lack of this completion was exclusively observed in patients with focal atrophy. These patients showed a selective and consistent impairment in word comprehension without phonemic cue effects in naming. The completion phenomenon was present in patients demonstrating transcortical sensory aphasia due to other cerebral diseases. In these patients, comprehension deficits were not selective for words, or words not comprehended were inconsistent and some phonemic cue effects were observed. In a previous study, we reported that completion phenomena for multiplication tables, serial numbers and names of days were frequently noted in patients with focal atrophy. Together with the present findings, these results suggest that lack of proverb completion may be attributed to a selective, systematic and complete loss of the meaning representations for language units such as words and proverbs. In addition, pathological processes of focal atrophy with temporal predominance might selectively affect the semantic memory for language as a unit.

AbstractThe use of nonliteral language in clinical assessment, especially testing the patients’ ability to interpret proverbs, has a long tradition in psychiatry. However, its diagnostic sensitivity and specificity in dementias is not yet clear. The aim of this review article is to examine the current evidence on nonliteral/figurative language (proverb, metaphor, metonymy, idiom, irony, sarcasm) comprehension in Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. A comprehensive literature search identified 25 studies (16 proverb, 3 metaphor, 0 metonymy, 5 idiom, 3 sarcasm) on nonliteral language comprehension in dementia. Studies predominantly indicate a deficit. Most studies investigated Alzheimer's dementia. Applied correctly, nonliteral language is a worthwhile diagnostic tool to evaluate language and abstract thinking in dementias. During assessment, familiarity testing (e.g., by asking “are you familiar with the proverb XY”) is obligatory. Still, future research is needed in several areas: evidence on decline of nonliteral language over the course of the illness is limited. So far, almost no studies delineated proverb comprehension in high risk populations such as patients with mild cognitive impairment. Currently, there is a lack of studies addressing performance in direct comparison to relevant differential diagnosis like older-age depression, delirium, brain lesion, or other psychiatric conditions. Abstract This paper investigates metaphor in Hakka proverbs by examining a corpus of 933 couplets based on a refined analytic framework from Lakoff & Turner (1989). For the source domain, the being of the state of affairs and the rhetorical relations of the two chunks are identified. For the target domain, the projected theme and the connotative tendency are examined. The results show that source domains significantly correlate with the rhetorical relations and target domains, respectively. Four metaphorical mapping mechanisms based on the generic is specific metaphor are proposed for the operation of the global construal. A mirror image mapping is demonstrated: whole-for-part metonymy in the source domain and part-for-whole metonymy in the target domain. Both the evoked knowledge schemas, encompassing real-life Hakka folk experiences, and the projected themes, including family values, individual characters, and evaluations or standards of life, are found to be culturally constrained. A coalescence of linguistic, cultural, and affective forces is claimed to represent the metaphors in Hakka proverbs. The study contributes to a better understanding of metaphors in proverbs by establishing a solid ground from their linguistic and cultural features, and to expanding the conceptual metaphor theory by building the conceptual universality with specific cultural information.

The appreciation to “a virtuous woman” in Proverb 31:10-31 tend to be interpreted by patriarchal perspectives. Such interpretations view a virtuous woman as someone who should benefit man. This article intends to seek a fresh reading of Proverbs 31:10-31 by a feminist perspective. The method used to produce this reading is a feminist hermeneutics approach, which applies three steps of analysis: hermeneutics of suspicion, hermeneutics of remembrance, and hermeneutics of liberation. The result of this research is that the appreciation to women in Proverbs 31:10-31 should not be used as a means to legitimize male domination by shackling women in an ideal image that only benefits men, but rather as a means of remembering the women’s suffering and fighting power, as well as triggering creative efforts for women's liberation so that they can actualize their own potential. AbstrakPujian terhadap “istri yang cakap” di dalam Amsal 31:10-31 cenderung ditafsirkan dari sudut pandang patriakal. Tafsir yang demikian memandang istri yang cakap sebagai perempuan yang seharusnya menguntungkan laki-laki. Tulisan ini bermaksud memberikan pembacaan terhadap Amsal 31:10-31 dari sudut pandang feminis. Metode yang digunakan untuk menghasilkan pembacaan tersebut adalah dengan pendekatan hermeneutik Feminis, yang menerapkan tiga langkah analisis: hermeneutik kecurigaan, hermeneutik ingatan, dan hermeneutik pembebasan. Hasil penelitian ini adalah bahwa pujian terhadap perempuan dalam Amsal 31:10-31 semestinya tidak dijadikan sebagai sarana untuk melegitimasi dominasi laki-laki dengan membelenggu perempuan pada gambaran ideal yang hanya menguntungkan laki-laki, melainkan untuk dijadikan sebagai sarana mengingat derita dan daya juang perempuan serta memicu upaya kreatif untuk pembebasan perempuan agar dapat mengaktualisasikan potensi dirinya sendiri.

Résumé Cet article se propose d’étudier les proverbes italiens et français les plus fréquents dans les discours des séances plénières du Parlement européen (PE) de 2014 à 2022. Après avoir présenté une méthodologie de repérage corpus-driven des proverbes appliquée à deux corpus de référence français et italien (frWaC et itWaC) et aux séances plénières du PE, nous analysons quelques exemples de proverbes énoncés dans les discours des plénières. Nous examinons ainsi leur gestion en interprétation simultanée (IS) de l’italien vers le français et prenons en compte un exemple de multimodalité liée à l’énonciation des proverbes, pour nous interroger sur son traitement en IS.

В статье представлен аксиологический статус пословичной диады «голод - сытость» как одной из доминант восточнославянской лингвокультуры на материале русского, белорусского и украинского языков, выявлены общие константы, а также проанализированы особенности репрезентации и оценки этих понятий в пословицах каждого из языков. Актуальность исследования определяется необходимостью объективного лингвоаксиологического описания и установления истинного соотношения общего и различного в восточнославянском паремиологическом пространстве. Новизна исследования видится в обращении к новому, неразработанному материалу картотеки составляемого в настоящий момент под руководством проф. В.М. Мокиенко «Аксиологического словаря русских, белорусских и украинских пословиц». Для семантизации восточнославянских пословиц был использован описательно-аналитический метод, а для учета специфики межэквивалентности паремий родственных славянских языков - сопоставительный метод. На основании анализа паремийного фонда доказано, что, в отличие от лексического значения словарного определения понятия голод, имеющего выраженный негативный характер, аксиологическая градация пословичной диады «голод - сытость» более обширна и многогранна: от отрицательной голод как следствие лени, пьянства и глупости, который доводит до смерти и толкает на преступление, до положительной оценки Голода в значении силы, побуждающей человека к решительным действиям, учащей жизни. В ходе последовательного раскрытия паремийного аксиологического потенциала диады «голод - сытость» удалось также выявить специфику восточнославянских пословиц: грамматическая вариативность вносит новую образность за счёт продуктивной вокативной формы в украинском языке ( Дай, голоде, хліба ); лексическое варьирование самых доступных продуктов питания ( С голоду и оладьи в честь; Голодному й вівсяник добрий; Галодны і гнілой бульбіне рад ) иллюстрирует лингвокультурологическую особенность восточнославянских паремий. Сытость же, напротив, вопреки нейтральному словарному толкованию, в пословицах приобретает отрицательную оценку и характеризуется отсутствием эмпатии, жесткосердечностью, скупостью. ( Сыт голоду не разумеет; Сытое брюхо к работе туго ). Данное исследование показало, что во всех трех языках прослеживается смысловое единство в неоднозначной оценке диады «голод - сытость». В то же время проведенный сопоставительный анализ доказывает проявление частных особенностей в тематических вариантах компонентов общих по модели и значению пословиц каждого из языков. Именно в этих вариантах прослеживается лингвокультурологическая специфика русских, украинских и белорусских паремий. Материалы проекта “Аксиологического словаря русских, белорусских и украинских пословиц» позволили представить пословичную диаду «Голод - сытость» во всей полноте ее значений и оценить ее аксиологический The article presents the axiological status of the proverbial dyad “Hunger - Satiety” as one of the dominants of the East Slavic linguistic culture based on the material of the Russian, Belorussian and Ukrainian languages, reveals common constants, and analyzes the features of the representation and evaluation of these concepts in the proverbs of each language. The relevance of the study is determined by the need for an objective linguo-axiological description and the establishment of a true correlation of the common and different in the East Slavic paremiological space. The novelty of the study is seen in the appeal to the new, undeveloped material of the compiled at the moment under the guidance of prof. V.M. Mokienko “Axiological Dictionary of Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian Proverbs”. The descriptive-analytical method was used to semantize the East Slavic proverbs, and the comparative method was used to take into account the specifics of the inter-equivalence of the proverbs of cognate Slavic languages. Based on the analysis of the proverb’s fund, it was proved that, in contrast to the lexical meaning of the dictionary definition of hunger, which has a pronounced negative character, the axiological gradation of the proverbial dyad “Hunger - Satiety” is more extensive and multifaceted: from negative Hunger as a result of laziness, drunkenness and stupidity, which leads to death and pushes to crime, to a positive assessment of the Hunger in the meaning of power, prompting a person to decisive actions, teaching life. In the course of the disclosure of the Hunger - Satiety dyad’s proverb’s axiological potential, it is also possible to identify the specifics of East Slavic proverbs: grammatical variation introduces a new imagery due to the productive vocative form in the Ukrainian language ( Дай, голоде, хліба ); the lexical variation of the most affordable food products ( С голоду и оладьи в честь; Голодному й вівсяник добрий; Галодны і гнілой бульбіне рад ) illustrates the linguistic and cultural peculiarity of the East Slavic proverbs. Satiety, on the contrary, inspite of the neutral vocabulary interpretation, in the proverbs gets a negative assessment and is characterized by a lack of empathy, hard-heartedness, unwillingness to help the needy, avarice ( Сыт голоду не разумеет; Сытое брюхо к работе туго ). This study showed that in all three languages there is a sense of unity in the ambiguous assessment of the dyad “Hunger - Satiety”. At the same time, the conducted comparative analysis proves the manifestation of particular features in thematic versions of the components that are common in the model and meaning of the proverbs of each language. It is in these variants that the linguoculturological specificity of the Russian, Ukrainian, and Belarusian proverbs is traced. The materials of the project “Axiological Dictionary of Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian Proverbs” made it possible to present the proverbial dyad “Hunger - Satiety” in its entirety and to evaluate its axiological status.

Abstract This paper evaluates postproverbial (re)constructions of selected Igbo proverbs and the ‘altering alternatives’ regenerated from the original Igbo proverbs. Eighteen randomly selected Igbo proverbs, the proverbial expressions and their postproverbial (re)constructions were subjected to critical analysis. The study revealed that there are noticeable changings in rendering of the selected proverbs. These changings occur largely either due to lack of an in-depth knowledge in the usage of the traditional proverbs, disconnection with the custodians/sources of the Igbo proverbs, urbanisation influence on the Igbo speakers or both. Hence the manufacturing of the ‘altering alternatives’, known as postproverbials. The paper, therefore, urges Igbo language speakers and the would-be users, to draw closer by retracing their step in the choice and usage of Igbo proverbs against the near-overbearing influence of proverbials on the autochthonous, symbolic, semantic, and philosophical essence of Igbo traditional proverbs.

Yorùbá proverbs are a part of the wisdom lore of the Yorùbá race. The Yorùbá people value proverbs highly. They try to look for solutions to their problems in their proverbs. The prevailing criminal in Nigeria create an atmosphere of insecurity in the country. The question this paper intends to answer is whether the use of Yoruba proverbs can bring insecurity in Yorùbá land under control? To answer this question, adopting the sociology of literature, this study examined thirty security related Yorùbá proverbs collected through personal observations and published texts on Yorùbá proverbs. Our findings showed that false assumptions, bad company, and lack of foresight can bring about insecurity, while having foresight and making joint efforts can strengthen the security of Yorùbá land. The paper concludes that Yorùbá proverbs relevant to security matters can reduce the problems of insecurity in Yorùbá land if their teachings are utilised to guide them appropriately. Language plays a vital role for the shaping of the social structure of a society. Similarly, proverbs are the significant part of any language being used in a day to day communication. These proverbs are transformed and transferred from generation to generation in according to the social events and conditions. The current study carried out on representation of women in Balochi language proverbs. The purpose of this study was to critically analyze the gender representation of women in Balochi language Proverbs. In present study purposive sampling technique is used to collect data. The data were collected from four books on Balochi proverbs among them 15 proverbs are critically analyzed. All those proverbs which represented women are taken and analyzed. Moreover, the Hegemonic masculinity, hegemony and social constructionism theories are used to analyze the data. The findings of this study suggests that women are represented in a gendered way depicting her role as dependency, submissiveness, marginalized and lack agency whereas men have been portrayed as powerful, brave, ruler and holds greater autonomy over economic, social, religious and political domain.

Interpretation plays a role of a paramount significance in sending and receiving messages between people all over the world. It is of vital significance in the international conferences, symposiums and workshops where the meaning must be transferred and exchanged among the participants. In fact, proverbs are considered as one of the most important elements which are used in speech and need to be exchanged among nations around the globe. However, interpreters usually encounter some challenges in interpreting proverbs from English to Arabic or vice versa due to the cultural differences between Arabic and English as well as the lack of equivalents for some proverbs. This study investigates the techniques of interpreting the English proverbs from English to Arabic. The data of this study are collected from two basic well-known dictionaries, namely, the Lamps of Experience: a Collection of English Proverbs by Ba’alabaki (1980) and a Dictionary of Proverbs: English – Arabic by Kilani and Ashour (1991). The analysis of data reveals that many useful techniques can be used for the interpretation of proverbs. Such techniques are highlighted and graded based on their own priorities. The present study provides recommendations for interpreters, translators, researchers which might improve the quality of interpretation and translation of proverbs from English to Arabic or vice versa.

<p>This paper aims to critically review current studies with respect to definitions,<br />methods, and results on the comprehension of metaphor, metonymy,<br />idioms, and proverbs under the following clinical conditions: aphasia,<br />Alzheimer’s disease, autism, brain injuries, specific language impairment,<br />and Williams Syndrome. A comprehensive search of experimental<br />psycholinguistic research was conducted using EBSCOhost, PsychInfo,<br />PUBMED, and Web of Science databases. Thirty-eight studies met the<br />review inclusion criteria. Results point to deficits in figurative language<br />comprehension in all conditions considered, lack of clear definitions of<br />the phenomena investigated, and varied methods throughout the sample.<br />Patients’ difficulties are attributed to multiple factors, such as a lack of<br />Theory of Mind, executive dysfunctions, and poor semantic knowledge.<br />The study of nonliteral aspects of language comprehension in clinical<br />populations reveals a range of disparate impairments. There was no specific<br />feature about metaphor-related phenomena identified that could, on its own,<br />account for the difficulty some populations have to understand figurative<br />language. Prepoznajući važnost procesnog aspekta političkog odlučivanja za uspješnost javnih politika, rad nastoji otkriti koje vrste upravljačkih prioriteta postoje u Hrvatskoj. Na temelju tematske analize procesnih ciljeva javnih politika u 11 hrvatskih strateških dokumenata, rad pokazuje kako dokumenti predviđaju niz upravljačkih zadaća počevši od donošenja temeljnih konstitutivnih odluka o osnovnim načelima i strukturama za stvaranje javnih politika, preko aktivnosti kojima se usmjerava oblikovanje politikâ pa sve do praktičnog upravljanja procesom provedbe planiranih aktivnosti. Classifying paremiological units proves to be a challenging task in multiple languages. To date, any large-scale paremiological collection can hardly fully cover a genre distribution of language material into proverbs and sayings or exclude other linguistic units similar in structure and semantics having a paremiological status. Our research is devoted to identifying the main features of the paremiological units of the Khakass language, their similarity, and differences in structural and semantic terms. In terms of structure, Khakass proverbs have been revealed to be small poetic texts made up of complete simple or complex sentences. Numerous proverbs are represented by two components that were found to have antonymic and synonymic interconnections and thematic close relationships. These proverbs convey moralizing or instruction and have a literal and figurative meaning. The sayings have been found to be eloquent non-rhythmic one-part utterances of an evaluative nature, characterized by a lack of didactic character, having the forms of simple, complete sentences. The composition of Khakass proverbs and sayings includes linguistic units related to phraseologisms. One of the essential features of proverbs and sayings is their folk character, that is, long and wide usage in the oral speech of the people. Aphorisms in the Khakass language appear mainly in works of art, carrying an individual character and eventually entering the collective usage. The Khakass paroemias clearly and concisely express the mentality of the Khakass people, their attitude to the surrounding world, and nature, also conveying a range of cultural concepts related to man and society.

The current study discusses the most common negative Yemeni traditions that are against women rights and social position. It sheds light on some popular proverbs related and used to confirm these traditions. The essential aim of this study is to identify these negative traditions and proverbs by showing their painful impact on Yemeni women. The researcher attempted to identify the reasons behind such beliefs and offer some solutions that can rule out or at least decrease following these discreditable traditional codes and proverbs. Furthermore, it tends to investigate the conflict between traditional conceptions and the awareness of women's status in society. Structured questionnaire and interviews were used for data collection. The findings show that most of Yemeni women are treated badly and their social position, rights, and existence as a substantial part of this society have no value. The study reveals that the majority of Yemeni people are affected by traditional beliefs as they regard them as essential parts of their identities and sacred codes. Consequently, the reasons behind such miserable traditions are the lack of education and misunderstanding of religion instructions. Key Words:Women social traditions popular proverbs position rights.

Hunger and inadequate nutrition are ongoing concerns in rural Malawi and are exemplified in traditional proverbs. Traditional proverbs and common expressions offer insight into commonly held truths across societies throughout sub-Saharan Africa. Strong oral traditions allow community beliefs embodied in proverbs to be passed down from generation to generation. In our qualitative study, we conducted 8 individual and 12 focus group interviews with a total of 83 participants across two districts in rural central Malawi with the aim of soliciting context-specific details on men and women’s knowledge, attitudes and practices related to nutrition, gender equality and women’s empowerment. Each interview began by asking participants to share common proverbs related to nutrition. Our qualitative analysis, informed by an indigenous-based theoretical framework that recognises and centres African indigenous knowledge production, yielded six themes: ‘a black dog enters the home’, ‘don’t stay with your hands hanging’, ‘a man is at the stomach’, ‘showers have fallen’, ‘we lack peace in our hearts’ and ‘the hunger season’. Traditional proverbs can provide insight into the underlying causes of hunger and malnutrition. Physicians, nurses and other allied health professionals around the world have a role to play in addressing hunger and malnutrition, which have been exacerbated by climate change. We have an ethical duty to educate ourselves and others, and change our behaviours, to mitigate the root causes of climate change, which are contributing to food insecurity and resultant poor health outcomes in countries like Malawi.

The purpose of the research is to analyze the content of Russian and Chinese proverbs, identify stereotypical ideas about a lazy person and compare the data of the two languages. Based on the analysis, the perceptual and inferior meanings of proverbs were identified. Perceptual meanings involve native speakers’ stereotypical representations obtained through observations: “a lazy person stays in bed a lot, sleeps for a long time”; “a lazy person tends to sit around most of the time and move just a little and slowly”; “a lazy person is fond of eating, but hates working”; “a lazy person does nothing with his hands”. It was concluded that the perceptual meanings of Russian and Chinese proverbs generally coincide. The following is referred to as the inferior meanings: “the conclusion about the causal relationship between laziness and a lack of necessary food and a warm shelter”; “generalization – a lazy person neither benefits from it themselves nor brings any benefit to the society”; “conclusion about the causal relationship between work/laziness and human life expectancy”. It was concluded that the inferior meanings differ: Russian proverbs represent the ideathat hard work leads to illness and shortens a person’s life, while Chinese proverbs reflect the stereotype “work prolongs a person’s life, whereas laziness makes people grow old”. Unlike the Chinese language, in which laziness is always categorically disapproved of directly, the Russian language reflects a condescending attitude towards lazy people.

This study is aimed to reveal parts of Banjarese proverbs which contain wisdom values, to find kinds of wisdom values represented through the Banjarese proverbs, and to reveal social contexts influencing the producing and interpreting process of the proverbs. The data of this study are gathered and selected from several literatures of Banjarese which are then analyzed using critical linguistics. The results of this study show that the parts which contain the wisdom values of the Banjarese people are the clues of interpretation. The wisdom values are also related to the good and the bad behaviours of Banjarese people. It is also found that Islam, as the religion followed by the majority of the Banjarese people, influences the Banjarese culture and Banjarese proverbs. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mencari tahu bagian mana saja dari peribahasa bahasa Banjar yang mengandung nilai kerarifan, menemukan bentuk nilai kearifan didalamnya, dan mengetahui apakah terdapat suatu konteks social yang mempengaruhi proses pembentukan dan penginterpetasian peribahasa itu sendiri. Data dalam studi ini dirangkum dari beberapa literatur yang ditulis oleh orang Banjar sendiri yang dipilih dengan alasan hanya literatur tersebut lah yang tersedia pada waktu studi ini dibuat. Data tersebut kemudian dianalisa dengan metode linguistic kritis. Studi ini menunjukkan bagian dari peribahasa Banjar yang cenderung mengandung nilai kearifan adalah penanda interpretasi. Hasil studi ini juga menunjukkan nilai kearifan dalam peribahasa Banjar terkait dengan sikap yang tidak patut ditiru dan sikap yang pantas untuk diikuti. Dan diasumsikan juga bahwa agama islam, yang terhitung sebagai agama yang dipeluk mayoritas penduduk Banjar, ternyata memiliki pengaruh terhadap kebudayaan dan peribahasa Banjar.

Several platforms, such as Netflix, offer subtitles of different works and movies in several languages, including Arabic and English. In this study, the researchers discuss the strategies used to overcome the challenges subtitlers face when translating Egyptian idiomatic expressions and proverbs into English. A parallel corpus of four movies, namely تيتا رهيبة My horrible grandma, عسل أسود Bittersweet, الباشا تلميذ The Student cop, and عمارة يعقوبيان Yacoubian Building, was compiled from scratch. The idiomatic expressions and proverbs were identified and analyzed according to Baker's taxonomies (Baker, 1992). The translation strategy of "paraphrasing" was the most frequently used in translating proverbs. In rendering idiomatic expressions, the subtitlers mostly resorted to the strategy of "translating by paraphrasing using unrelated words to deal with the non-equivalent expression". "Mistranslation" was detected in some cases, most likely due to the lack of the target culture knowledge and not finding appropriate equivalents. The subtitlers sometimes used literal translation, which distorted the meaning and resulted in unnatural translations. The results also revealed that some expressions that were repeatedly used in the movies were translated differently according to the context. This study can be beneficial to translators and translation students, especially those interested in subtitling movies and translating proverbs and idiomatic expressions.

Translating culture-specific proverbs (CSPs) is a challenging task since they often occur in a peculiar context. Further, CSPs are intended to imply meanings that extend far beyond the literal meaning of such a kind of proverbs. As far as English and Arabic are concerned, translators often encounter problems in translating CSPs due to cultural differences between the source language(SL) and the target language (TL) as well as what seems to be the lack of equivalence for some CSPs. In view of this, the present study aims at investigating the translation of CSPs in three English-Arabic dictionaries of proverbs, namely Dictionary of Common English Proverbs Translated and Explained (2004), One thousand and One English Proverbs Translated into Arabic (2008) and Dictionary of Wise Sayings and Proverbs (2009). Data of CSPs, in the aforementioned dictionaries, are analyzed as a case study. Specifically, the study attempts to examine whether CSPs are well translated and whether the translation strategies utilized have reflected the ST intended meaning (IM) and the embedded cultural implications as well. Out of the total data on CSPs, only ten examples are selected as representative samples for analysis. For the purpose of carrying out a meaningful analysis of the translation of CSPs, an eclectic model is adapted. It consists of Baker's (2011) cultural substitution strategy (CSS) in combination with Venuti's (2008) domestication strategy (DS) and Nida's (1964/1975) Functional (closest natural) equivalent as well. This proposed eclectic model was considered as the main theoretical framework of the study. Findings of the study revealed that the selected data have often shown low levels of adequacy in terms of expressing the meanings and pragmatic functions of the ST in the TT. Specifically, the selected translators provide inadequate translations of the cultural implications of the ST in the TT. In addition, this study concludes that translators can successfully render the intended meanings and the cultural elements of CSPs had they been not only bilingual but also bicultural since Arabic, particularly the Qur'an, Hadith, and the Arabic literature, is rich with CSPs that cover issues corresponding to those found in English proverbs. It is worth noting that even if the TL equivalent exists, it would not necessarily accomplish complete equivalence since the ways of expressing meaning and the usage of proverbs differ among languages.

The problem statement is to study zero exponents' text-forming function in texts of different genres and styles. The object of the study is the usual names of zero suffixation in the Russian language and the features of their functioning in the works of small folklore genres – proverbs and sayings. The purpose of the paper is to identify the main word-formation types of names of zero suffixation presented in proverbs and sayings, to evaluate their role in organizing the literary space of utterances. Leading research methods are theoretical analysis of scientific and educational literature on the topic, method of continuous sampling, language, speech and text analysis, structural and semantic analysis of language material, comparative and statistical methods, and lesson observation. The article reveals the frequency of the use of certain word-formation types of names of zero suffixation (deverbal, denominal, adjective-based) in individual proverbs and sayings, points out the frequency of unprefixed names of zero suffixation, shows the features of compatibility of deverbatives, their place in the meaningful and rhythmic construction of proverbs and sayings. The figural and expressive properties of these formations are considered. The applied significance of the study and the possibility of using the results for linguodidactic purposes of teaching Russian as a native and as a foreign language are emphasized.

History reminds us that Scots have always been notorious for their migration to other countries of the world, frequently a forced one, for the lack of space or constant trouble at home. Many a good Gaelic name left trace in the history of Europe and Americas, as well as Australia; indeed even in Russia every single Scottish clan name happens to be somehow mentioned in her history. The Russians, on the contrary, at least until the early 20th century, were rather reluctant to leave their motherland, for in case of trouble there was plenty of room for them to move to, especially eastwards or northwards as the starovers did, or southwards and westwards. But how do these two peoples so different in their migration behaviour, the Gaels and the Russians, perceive the migration process? How are their attitude and behaviour patterns reflected in their proverbial lore? Do they share any patterns despite all the outward differences? How does it fit into the wider international proverbial context? And, more importantly, into demographic study? From a bulk of almost 6,000 of original Gaelic, 12,000 of Russian and more than 40,000 proverbs collected in different regions of Europe, Asia and Africa, about 500 proverbs were selected, then carefully analyzed and compared by the authors.

U radu se iznose novine koje u području nasljeđivanja donosi provedba Uredbe br. 650/2012 Europskog parlamenta i Vijeća od 4. srpnja 2012. o nadležnosti, mjerodavnom pravu, priznavanju i izvršavanju odluka i prihva- ćanju i izvršavanju javnih isprava u nasljednim stvarima i o uspostavi Europske potvrde o nasljeđivanju. Osobita se pažnja poklanja odredbama kojima je uređena nadležnost, tijela koja postupak provode kao i postupci koji će se provoditi u povodu Uredbe br. 650/2012 o nasljeđivanju. U tom se smislu u prvom dijelu rada detaljno analiziraju odredbe koje vezano uz primjenu Uredbe br. 650/2012 o nasljeđivanju donose Provedbena uredba Komisije br. 1329/2014 оd 9. prosinca 2014. o uspostavi obrazaca iz Uredbe br. 650/2012 Europskog parlamenta i Vijeća o nadležnosti, mjerodavnom pravu, priznavanju i izvršavanju odluka i prihvaćanju i izvršavanju javnih isprava u nasljednim stvarima i o uspostavi Europske potvrde o nasljeđivanju kao i odredbe hrvatskog Zakona o provedbi Uredbe br. 650/2012 o nasljeđivanju. U drugom dijelu rada analizira se predmet C404/14 Matoušková v. Republika Češka te se upućuje na poteškoće u pogledu razgraničenja područja primjene Uredbe (EZ) br. 2201/2003 te Uredbe br. 650/2012 o nasljeđivanju do kojih bi moglo doći u pojedinim predmetima s međunarodnim obilježjem.

Proverbs 20.26 allegorizes the optimal method of scattering the wicked by likening it to the wind-driven separation of chaff from grain. Since the word ʾ ôpan denotes the tool used for this process, it is proposed here that this term evokes a tuyere, a nozzle through which air is forced in a furnace, rather than a cartwheel, used for the threshing of grain. Functional affinities between ʾ ôpan and ʾ ap (= nose), the organ of blowing, together with the lack of a satisfying etymology for ʾ ôpan as a wheel, suggest that tuyere is the primary meaning of this noun in ancient Canaanite languages. Moreover, the similarity of ancient furnace nozzles to spokeless wheels suggests that the use of ʾ ôpan to denote a wheel is derived from the primary denotation of the word, a tuyere.

English proverb is an interested part when learner applied it in real life situation. The participants of this study were chosen from a big university in the middle area of Taiwan. The researchers selected some learners from Department of Foreign Language (DFL) and Department of Non-Foreign Language (DNFL). 40 students were from DFL, and 40 students were from DNFL. According to learner's short-term memory (STM) abilities, the researchers separated participants into four quadrants (Q1-Q4). According to visual style and verbal style of learning style, learning content representation (LCR) types are clarified into Type A, B, C. The research question is that participants with different STM abilities, how different LCR types affect the learning performance of English proverbs? The authors' results described that LCR with pictorial annotation (Type A) help participants with lower verbal ability and higher visual ability (Q2) to have better performance than other three quadrants, because type A participants feel easier to learn content presented in a visual form than in a verbal form. Providing LCR with both written and pictorial annotation (Type C) helps learners best with higher verbal ability and higher visual ability (Q1) in the recognition test. Providing redundancy learning content lead a higher cognitive load and result to irritation and lack of concentration, in accordance with the Cognitive Load theory. It implied that providing simple learning materials (only written annotation, Type B) is useful to participants with lower verbal ability and lower visual ability (Q3). The research results show that instructors should provide suitable learning materials to their learners in accordance with their STM abilities.

The use of interactive theorem provers to establish the correctness of critical parts of a software development or for formalizing mathematics is becoming more common and feasible in practice. However, most mature theorem provers lack a direct treatment of partial and general recursive functions; overcoming this weakness has been the objective of intensive research during the last decades. In this article, we review several techniques that have been proposed in the literature to simplify the formalization of partial and general recursive functions in interactive theorem provers. Moreover, we classify the techniques according to their theoretical basis and their practical use. This uniform presentation of the different techniques facilitates the comparison and highlights their commonalities and differences, as well as their relative advantages and limitations. We focus on theorem provers based on constructive type theory (in particular, Agda and Coq) and higher-order logic (in particular Isabelle/HOL). Other systems and logics are covered to a certain extent, but not exhaustively. In addition to the description of the techniques, we also demonstrate tools which facilitate working with the problematic functions in particular theorem provers.

Women participation in economic activities is often limited by social norms, especially in Indonesians majority societies. Nevertheless, the burden of poverty is forced many women to work in several jobs. This paper aims to investigate and discuss discuss female entrepreneur challenge in poverty reduction This research is using qualitative method to collect and analyze the data through interview, FGD, and direct observation. Respondents were chosen by purposive sampling, while key informants were chosen by snowball technique. The results show that the main challaneg of Mataram’s women to reduce their poverty are not gender but mostly lack of financial control and access funding, lack of market information and a scarcity of talented employees. Furthermore, Women participation in poverty reduction program is considered to be the key of success in many poverty alleviation, one of them is being female entrepreneur or managing MSMEs

Анотація:
The paper deals with the analysis of value markers of French speakers living both in France and abroad. The relevance of this problem is explained by the anthropocentric orientation of modern linguistic science, by the study of linguistic facts in close connection with the facts of culture and their mutual influence, as well as by the lack of special research papers on the comparison of value markers of different speakers of the multinational French language. The purpose of this research is to identify the basic values of representatives of different French-speaking countries on the basis of thematically organized proverbial material presented in lexicographical sources. In the course of this research methods of comparative, statistical analysis were used, the material was obtained through continuous sampling from the specialized dictionary of French proverbs and sayings and amounted to 2041 units. The research has revealed that all French speakers living both in France and abroad are more likely to be oriented towards material rather than spiritual values. The peculiarities of French proverbs in each country reflect ethnically specific historical, geographical and sociolinguistic factors and conditions.

The article examines the peculiarity of the implementation of the procedural code in Kabardian proverbs and sayings. The subject code is the most explored in linguistic study, allowing us to re-flect on numerous ideas that are important in people’s axiology. Due to the lack of research on the procedural codes of culture, the necessity of introducing these symbolic representations into the scientific field is justified. The aim of the study is to identify the semiotic elements of Kabardian paroemias that mark the value representations of native speakers. The scientific novelty consists in presenting the mechanisms of encoding the ethnomental paradigms of epistemology, in reflect-ing the deep structures of consciousness through words associated with the most important verbs of action. As a result of the study, the most frequent words projecting cultural dominants are iden-tified and their semantic classification is presented.

Today, despite the abundant supply and scientific papers concerning particular features of multi-method, communicative culture and comparative linguistic research on the ethnocultural stereotypes of Turkic peoples' communicative behavior, it is vital in modern linguistics. The issue statement is because the ethnocultural examination of the Turkic peoples' communicative behavior permits us to look at the ethnos' communicative culture in the modern context and distinguish typical and distinctive characteristics of the Tatar's communicative culture Turkish peoples. This survey investigates the ethnocultural stereotypes of the communicative behavior of the Tatar and Turkish linguistic cultures expressed in the paroemiological fund. The analysis is based on the Tatar and Turkish languages' phraseological and paroemiological units within this article's framework. The research adopted descriptive, stylistic, and comparative techniques. Moreover, The methodological framework is the linguoculturological, cognitive-linguistic aspects of the investigation of paroemiological units. The most substantial typical categories of the Tatars' communicative culture are the culture of communication, politeness, sociability, verbiage, silence, conflict communication, and effective communication. In paroemias, truth is proclaimed before lie, laconicalness before loquacity, silence before speaking, deed before the word, listening before speaking. The examination of stereotypes of communicative behavior reveals that the Tatars persist faithfully to the observance of folk traditions and particular speech cultures.

This article describes directions towards a biblical pedagogy which aims at a hermeneutic in which students develop a responsible relationship to Scripture in which they recognize its relevance for their world. The essence of wisdom as taught by Proverbs and Job, and research in the teaching of literature form the basis for the guidelines of a pedagogy that addresses student resistance and lack of interest in reading the Bible.

Abstract. Patriarchal domination often causes gender bias. In this case, woman is considered to be in a subordinate position to man. This impression can also be seen in Javanese culture, in which woman are often seen as “konco wingking.” Therefore, this paper intends to examine the portrait of woman (wife) in Javanese culture by comparing them with the description of woman in Proverbs 31:10-31. This study is conducted by Martha Nussbaum's feminist interpretation. Through this study, an understanding was obtained that as described by woman in Proverbs 31:10-31, woman's position in Javanese culture does not always have to be interpreted as a limitation, but instead becomes a means of woman’s developing and controlling over her environment as the key to achieving happiness.Abstrak. Dominasi patriarki seringkali menyebabkan adanya bias gender. Dalam hal ini perempuan dianggap dalam posisi subordinat dari laki-laki. Kesan tersebut juga terlihat dalam budaya Jawa, di mana perempuan tidak jarang dianggap sebagai “konco wingking.” Oleh karena itu, tulisan ini bermaksud untuk mengkaji potret perempuan (istri) dalam budaya Jawa dengan mengkomparasikan dengan gambaran perempuan dalam Amsal 31:10-31. Studi ini memanfaatkan interpretasi feminis Martha Nussbaum. Melalui kajian ini diperoleh pemahaman bahwa sebagaimana gambaran perempuan dalam Amsal 31:10-31, posisi perempuan dalam budaya Jawa tidak selalu harus dimaknai sebagai pembatasan, namun justru menjadi sarana pengembangan dan kontrol perempuan terhadap lingkungannya sebagai kunci mencapai kebahagiaan.

The relevance of this work is due to the importance of age stereotypes for the life of society and the language picture of the world and the need to study the dynamic aspect of these stereotypes. Traditional age stereotypes are represented in proverbs correlated with this phenomenon and reflecting the axiology of age. However, these stereotypes cannot be considered permanent even within a certain linguistic and cultural community, they are subject to changes that can occur both over a long time and relatively quickly. The aim of the work is to identify the dynamics of age stereotypes in the Anglo-Saxon language picture of the world on the basis of comparing their representation in proverbs and English-language corpora. The comparative analysis of English proverbs and utterances in British and American corpora shows that most of the negative as well as positive stereotypes associated with youth and old age remain unchanged or are further detailed in the corpora. However, many new stereotypes are emerging, which is due to such factors as rapid technological progress, the emergence of digital technologies, the focus of society on intensive work and money-making, the tendency to youth obsession. New negative stereotypes concerning old age include increased fear of old age, disability, forgetfulness, loneliness, the need of older people for empathy, egocentrism. An additional positive stereotype is the stereotype about the love of old people for children. New negative stereotypes connected with youth include commitment of young people to bad habits, a tendency to crime, lack of perseverance, unwillingness to study, emotional instability, excessive haste, dependence on technology, leading to social isolation. There are also such new positive stereotypes as good adaptability, health and activity of young people, a large number of opportunities that are open up to them, rapid growth on the career ladder.

The Lithuanian picture of house/home is deeply rooted in folk tradition – the ideal home is the rural home of a person’s childhood. In Lithuanian, there are two expressions that are used to designate the concept, the singular namas – which dictionaries tersely define as a building – and the plural namai, which stands for a broader space and a family staying together. The author discusses synonyms (and quasi-synonyms), antonyms (accenting the opposition between familiarity and strangeness), derivatives and collocations of these words. She reports the results of a questionnarie, which show that namas/namai is often mythicised as a paradise on earth, with the important motif of returning home. Proverbs keep guard over patriarchal relations in the family and portray home as a stronghold. Journalistic texts introduce the concept of a cosmopolitan home, open to the world. The features of the Lithuanian base picture of namas/namai are discussed according to the basic semantic aspects: social, psychosocial (sacralisation of home), mental, physical and functional (home as a shelter protecting individuals from the strange world they fear). Two profiles of the Lithuanian home are identified in the study: a romantic rustic profile grounded in the lasting relationship with the family, and a European, intelligentsia profile located wherever there are (any) people.

Top-down and bottom-up theorem proving approaches each have specific advantages and disadvantages. Bottom-up provers profit from strong redundancy control but suffer from the lack of goal-orientation, whereas top-down provers are goal-oriented but often have weak calculi when their proof lengths are considered. In order to integrate both approaches, we try to achieve cooperation between a top-down and a bottom-up prover in two different ways: The first technique aims at supporting a bottom-up with a top-down prover. A top-down prover generates subgoal clauses, they are then processed by a bottom-up prover. The second technique deals with the use of bottom-up generated lemmas in a top-down prover. We apply our concept to the areas of model elimination and superposition. We discuss the ability of our techniques to shorten proofs as well as to reorder the search space in an appropriate manner. Furthermore, in order to identify subgoal clauses and lemmas which are actually relevant for the proof task, we develop methods for a relevancy-based filtering. Experiments with the provers SETHEO and SPASS performed in the problem library TPTP reveal the high potential of our cooperation approaches.

Abstract. The relevance of the proposed research lies in the fact that at the present stage of the development of linguistics there is a lack of an empirical (analytical) base that would make it possible to subject proverbial modifications and subject them to a full-scale and comprehensive analysis. Moreover, the gender problem in the proverbial picture of any culture is a young and insufficiently studied science, and now in linguistics there is a rapid growth of research devoted to the study of the gender parameter in the language. The basic object of this study is a part of the proverbial fund of the English and Russian languages, which serves as the basis for various kinds of modifications. The purpose of this work is to analyze the ways of constructing the image of a man and a woman in Russian and English proverbs. In accordance with the goals, the following tasks were set study of literature on the topic and related fields of science; to make a thematic and historical-etymological classification of the studied layer of the vocabulary of the Russian and English people; using specific theoretical and factual materials to clarify the existing classifications of phraseological units, proverbs and sayings indicating the gender aspect.

This article uses a qualitative method. This research discusses the implementation of Christian religious education in families in the era of society 5.0 which is dominated by digital technology. Current advances often create significant problems, such as reliance on social media and a lack of face-to-face interaction between people; Because of excessive and uncontrolled use. This has the potential to damage family harmony and intimacy, including in practicing religious values. This research offers an educational and exemplary approach as a relevant and theological method that parents can use to instill Christian values in families in the era of society 5.0. The education approach refers to direct and directed teaching, while the example approach refers to the attitude of parents setting the right example for their children. The two approaches offered are based on two Bible texts, namely; Titus 2:6-7 and Proverbs 29:17. The narrative of Titus 2:6-7 emphasizes the importance of proper example from parents to children, while the narrative of Proverbs 29:17 emphasizes the importance of proper education from parents to children. The final conclusion of this study is that educational methods and examples are very relevant and accurate when used by parents in implementing Christian religious education in families in the era of society 5.0
