The POGIL-PCL (Process-Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning in the Physical Chemistry Laboratory) project has developed a series of workshops to introduce faculty to POGIL-PCL and to facilitate the development of new experiments. More than 60 faculty members from various institutions have attended these workshops. Workshop participants were surveyed in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the workshop and better understand why faculty choose to adopt POGIL-PCL. Of the participants who completed the survey, 77% had used POGIL-PCL experiments. The results of the survey show that personal influence is a major factor in all stages of the adoption process.

AimIncreasing attacks on healthcare personnel in India have highlighted the need for improved communication between staff and patients. Currently, communication skill workshops target doctors and nurses, overlooking a key player relevant to patient satisfaction—allied health professionals (henceforth, AHPs). This study evaluates the impact of communication skills training for diagnostic laboratory and blood bank personnel on patient satisfaction scores.MethodThe impact of communication workshop for AHPs was tested through pre-workshop and post-workshop questionnaires to participants that tested how they handle communication with patients. Additionally, participants were also administered the questionnaire 4 months after the workshop to test knowledge retention. In parallel, the change in patient satisfaction towards AHPs was assessed by a pre-workshop and post-workshop patient survey.ResultsParticipants experienced a statistically significant improvement in communication skills, as measured by the pre-workshop and post-workshop questionnaires. This coincided with a significant increase in patient satisfaction scores after the workshop, as indicated by the patient satisfaction survey. The difference in communication skills scores between experienced and inexperienced personnel showed a marked decrease after the workshop, suggesting that such workshops can help inexperienced workers ‘catch up’ with more experienced workers. However, scores of all participants showed a statistically significant decrease after 4 months, suggesting that the use of such workshops can be enhanced through periodic refresher courses.ConclusionCommunication workshops for AHPs can play a crucial role in improving patient–hospital relations. These workshops can also help standardise services by bridging communication skill differences between experienced and inexperienced staff.

AbstractEarly proponents of the problem-solving workshop cast it as a method of research to study the phenomenon of social conflict, not only as a method of practice. As a research technique, problem-solving workshops can serve as both a forum for applying and testing concepts and models about conflict, and as a laboratory for inductive theorizing based on information provided by participants. Workshops can also be useful for identifying the typical barriers that hamper effective negotiation and for proposing ways to overcome these resistances. As a form of action research, workshops constitute a social intervention and serve as the central element in a program of activities directed toward social change through conflict resolution. Unfortunately, both the potential of workshops as a research method and the need for evaluating them as interventions are inadequately addressed by current practice.

ECVAM initiated its workshop programme in 1994, to enable it to become well informed about the state of the art of non-animal test development and validation, and about the possible incorporation of alternatives into regulatory requirements for safety testing. Fifty-one such workshops had been held on specific topics, up to 2002. In these workshops, the current status of in vitro tests and their potential uses were reviewed and recommendations were made as to the best ways forward to progress and enhance the use of in vitro methods. Reports for 46 of these workshops have been published in ATLA. Most of the workshops focused on in vitro replacement methods, although an increasing number have dealt with reduction and refinement. The recommendations in the ECVAM workshops have been progressed further by: a) the formation of ECVAM task forces; b) the organisation of further workshops; c) the activities of scientific committees; d) the provision of earmarked research funding; and e) the conduct of validation studies. Examples of each of these activities are discussed. Some individual workshops are covered in more detail, and several recommendations that have so far not been acted on are also considered. The workshops and their reports have had a substantial effect on the development and implementation of alternative methods, and have been a major factor in contributing to the success of the first nine years of ECVAM's existence. It is strongly recommended that ECVAM continues to organise workshops and to publish their findings, and suggestions are made for topics for future workshops.

In October 1995, Takeshi Furuhashi and his collegues at the Bio-Electronics Laboratory of Nagoya University, Japan, organized the first of a series of on-line workshops, held entirely on the World Wide Web. The advertised advantages of the on-line format were to allow fruitful exchanges while avoiding physical travel, and to guarantee wide visibility of the discussion. The first two workshops in the series were devoted to evolutionary computation; they can be accessed on the web at http://www.bioele.nuee.nagoya-u.ac.jp. The third workshop, named “First On-Line Workshop on Soft Computing” (WSC1), had a broader scope, including all the techniques that go under the heading of “soft computing”, like fuzzy logic, neuro computing, genetic computing, and so on. WSC1 took place from August 19 to 30 1996, and it is accessible on the web at http://www.bioele.nuee.nagoya-u.ac.jp/wsc1/. Because the declared goal of an on-line workshop is to prompt discussion, the rules for submission were looser than in most traditional workshops: papers were not subject to peer review, and it was possible to submit already published papers. All the submitted papers were made visible on the web one week before the workshop, and people could send comments and questions by email during the two workshop weeks; all the questions, comments, and authors' replies are also visible at the WSC1 web site.

During the first half of 2021, and due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic preventing in-person meetings, the European Bioanalysis Forum organized four workshops as live interactive online meetings. The themes discussed at the workshops were carefully selected to match the cyberspace dynamics of the meeting format. The first workshop was a training day on challenges related to immunogenicity. The second one focused on biomarkers and continued the important discussion on integrating the principles of Context of Use (CoU) in biomarker research. The third workshop was dedicated to technology, that is, cutting-edge development in cell-based and ligand-binding assays and automation strategies. The fourth was on progress and the continued scientific and regulatory challenges related to peptide and protein analysis with MS. In all four workshops, the European Bioanalysis Forum included a mixture of scientific and regulatory themes, while reminding the audience of important strategic aspects and our responsibility toward the patient.

Introduction: Frequent reports of laboratory- and hospital-acquired infection in Egypt suggested a deficiency in handling hazardous samples and microorganisms among different researchers and professionals. The most common cause of laboratory incidents and potential exposure is often identified as a lack of biosafety training. Methods: In this study, we designed and implemented an effective laboratory biorisk management (BRM) training. Two workshops were delivered to 42 faculty members working in laboratories handling biological material in Egypt. The workshop modules were based on the global biorisk management curriculum developed by Sandia National Laboratories, with some modifications. The content was delivered to actively engaging participants in the learning process that included group work, case studies and scenarios, short presentations, demonstrations, hands-on activities, and questions and answers that created analytical thinking situations. These workshops introduced the concept of biorisk management, which combines risk assessment, risk mitigation, and performance systems and dual-use research of concern. Results: Results of pre-tests/post-tests revealed significant ( P < .001) improvement in knowledge acquisition among participants. Course evaluation surveys indicate that most participants felt that these teaching methods met their needs and that their personal laboratory practices would change as a result of the training course. Conclusion: We conclude that using varied hands-on strategies in teaching biorisk management provided the participants with the skills, tools, and confidence to guide their laboratory staff and colleagues on sustainable biorisk management to reduce the risks associated with infectious disease research in a laboratory setting.

The training of modern engineers, in terms of increasing amount of information that must be studied by the student prior to the beginning of his professional activity, requires the intensification of the learning process. The participation of students in lab classes is becoming important. This ensures the learning from different specialized fields and formation of initial skills practice. Operation of commercial instruments became so complex that the skills of management requires more time than is allocated for the laboratory practicum. Therefore, the development of equipment for these classes requires new solutions. It is important that the research objects are interesting to students, and the measurement tools meet a number of specific requirements: equipment for laboratory workshops of junior students must be implemented in “vandal-proof” performance; routine measurement procedures must be performed automatically; the results of experiments must be saved for further use in the educational process – this “careful” approach to the results guarantees increased attention of students in terms of their reliability. The article provides examples of implementation of these requirements in the universal scientific and educational complex “Lab-center”. The implementation of the principles “the same measuring devices and another object of research”, “the study of phenomena should move from simple to complex” in laboratory workshops of special subjects is demonstrated on the example of a complex for studying the features of semiconductor pumping in solid-state lasers. It is noted that it is increasingly required to perform laboratory workshops in “clean rooms”, where the objects of research are protected from external influences. The organization of remote control solves the problem of excluding the presence of students in such premises, but requires the use of special measures to prevent unauthorized access to the management of unique equipment. The article presents possible solutions to this problem. Existing examples show that the effectiveness of the practical classes is largely determined by the level of development of laboratory base of higher education institutions. Keywords: engineering personnel, education, laboratory workshops, equipment, intensification, remote control, Internet.

This article reports on the use of laboratory analysis to examine whether pottery recovered from excavations at Abu Erteila includes wares made at the same workshops as pottery found at other Meroitic sites in the region. It also examines whether wares deemed typical of the Abu Erteila ceramic assemblage were made of the same raw materials as pottery at neighbouring sites or clay used at other workshops. Particular attention was paid to assessing whether samples with fabrics which macroscopically resemble the Musawwarat fabrics were indeed made at workshops in Musawwarat or whether this macroscopic similarity is deceptive.

The ability to understand and implement calculations required for molarity and dilution computations that are routinely undertaken in the laboratory are essential skills that should be possessed by all students entering an undergraduate Life Sciences degree. However, it is increasingly recognized that the majority of these students are ill equipped to reliably carry out such calculations. There are several factors that conspire against students' understanding of this topic, with the alien concept of the mole in relation to the mass of compounds and the engineering notation required when expressing the relatively small quantities typically involved being two key examples. In this report, we highlight teaching methods delivered via revision workshops to undergraduate Life Sciences students at the University of Nottingham. Workshops were designed to 1) expose student deficiencies in basic numeracy skills and remedy these deficiencies, 2) introduce molarity and dilution calculations and illustrate their workings in a step-by-step manner, and 3) allow students to appreciate the magnitude of numbers. Preworkshop to postworkshop comparisons demonstrated a considerable improvement in students' performance, which attenuated with time. The findings of our study suggest that an ability to carry out laboratory calculations cannot be assumed in students entering Life Sciences degrees in the United Kingdom but that explicit instruction in the form of workshops improves proficiency to a level of competence that allows students to prosper in the laboratory environment.

The article considers an important problem of realization of the principle of historicism in the consideration of the formation of the department of theory and methods of technological training, labor protection and life safety (1957-1997). There are two active and one passive periods of its development. On the basis of archival data - orders on enrollment in positions the analysis of personnel of the management, teachers, employees of department is carried out. At the same time, the issue of material base development from almost all academic disciplines is revealed. The first stage of the department's origin covers the years 1957-1967. Mention of the specialty of labor training dates back to 1957, when the Department of Physics introduced an additional specialization "Work in school workshops." The department provided training in technical mechanics, electrical engineering, radio engineering, basics of mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering with a tractor workshop, woodworking and metals processing technology with a workshop in training workshops, training films, photography, methods of work in school workshops, industrial practice and more. The carpentry workshop was equipped with jointing, planing, turning, drilling and other machines, and mechanical industrial lathes, milling, drilling and planing machines. The curriculum provided for mastering the technological operations of manual and mechanical processing of materials in the school workshops of high school for boys. The girls mastered the profession of civil defense nurse. In 1967, the graduation of specialists in labor training ceased. In 1993, the second stage of the revival of recruitment for the specialty of labor training began. The educational and material base was formed, scientific and pedagogical staff, masters, laboratory assistants were selected, educational and methodical support was created, the specialty "Labor and Applied Creativity" was licensed, and recruitment for the first year was announced. In September 1994, 30 students were enrolled in the first year, according to the licensed volumes. At the beginning of the 1996-1997 academic year, the Faculty of Engineering and Pedagogy underwent a reorganization. In January 1997, the Department of General Technical Disciplines and Methods of Labor Training was established at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics. Students studying in the specialty "Labor training and applied creativity" were transferred to the newly created licensed specialty "Labor training and basics of computer science".

Two binder technician workshops were held in January 1998, one at the Connecticut Advanced Pavement Laboratory at the University of Connecticut and one at the Northeast Center of Excellence for Paving Technology at Pennsylvania State University. These workshops were followed by a second set in 1999. The overall objective was to improve the repeatability of the test methods used to grade Superpave® asphalt binders. During the workshops, participants demonstrated and discussed the techniques used in their own laboratories. A document, Manual of Practice for Testing Asphalt Binders in Accordance with the Superpave PG Grading System, was developed for use by asphalt binder technicians and as a training aid for a proposed binder technician certification program. The results of the discussions that were held during the workshops and the items that are presented in the manual of practice are summarized. The results were grouped into four main categories: ( a) handling, sampling, and sample preparation; ( b) temperature measurements; ( c) equipment calibration; and ( d) testing procedures. The items discussed here and in the manual of practice supplement and clarify the current AASHTO test methods. The test methods in themselves are not sufficient to ensure uniformity in testing practice from one laboratory to the other.

Laboratory teaching in sport and exercise sciences universities is of fundamental importance as it provides students with the necessary hands-on skills that are indispensable to future kinesiologists. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students in lockdown missed the opportunity to acquire laboratory skills. Here we report the solutions adopted by a blended exercise science Master’s degree program of an online Italian university to ensure didactic continuity in the practice-oriented activities during the period of the COVID-19 lockdown. In order to mitigate this issue, laboratory sessions were replaced with online workshops and students’ satisfaction levels in this regard were investigated in the present study using an online survey conducted on 101 students during lockdown. The survey consisted of 7-point Likert scale items focusing on computer usage (CU), learning satisfaction (LS), social interaction (SI), and perceived value (PV). The analysis of the results revealed a good level of learning satisfaction of the students. Conversely, students perceived a moderate level of social interaction and had a moderate perception that online workshops can enhance their learning abilities. In conclusion, the results of the present study seem to indicate that online workshops can be considered a good and acceptable compromise during an emergency, although face-to-face activities remain the preferable learning delivery modality when dealing with the acquisition of hands-on skills.

The 15th edition of the Workshop on Recent Issues in Bioanalysis (15th WRIB) was held on 27 September to 1 October 2021. Even with a last-minute move from in-person to virtual, an overwhelmingly high number of nearly 900 professionals representing pharma and biotech companies, contract research organizations (CROs), and multiple regulatory agencies still eagerly convened to actively discuss the most current topics of interest in bioanalysis. The 15th WRIB included 3 Main Workshops and 7 Specialized Workshops that together spanned 1 week in order to allow exhaustive and thorough coverage of all major issues in bioanalysis, biomarkers, immunogenicity, gene therapy, cell therapy and vaccines. Moreover, in-depth workshops on biomarker assay development and validation (BAV) (focused on clarifying the confusion created by the increased use of the term “Context of Use – COU”); mass spectrometry of proteins (therapeutic, biomarker and transgene); state-of-the-art cytometry innovation and validation; and, critical reagent and positive control generation were the special features of the 15th edition. This 2021 White Paper encompasses recommendations emerging from the extensive discussions held during the workshop, and is aimed to provide the bioanalytical community with key information and practical solutions on topics and issues addressed, in an effort to enable advances in scientific excellence, improved quality and better regulatory compliance. Due to its length, the 2021 edition of this comprehensive White Paper has been divided into three parts for editorial reasons. This publication (Part 1A) covers the recommendations on Endogenous Compounds, Small Molecules, Complex Methods, Regulated Mass Spec of Large Molecules, Small Molecule, PoC. Part 1B covers the Regulatory Agencies' Inputs on Bioanalysis, Biomarkers, Immunogenicity, Gene & Cell Therapy and Vaccine. Part 2 (ISR for Biomarkers, Liquid Biopsies, Spectral Cytometry, Inhalation/Oral & Multispecific Biotherapeutics, Accuracy/LLOQ for Flow Cytometry) and Part 3 (TAb/NAb, Viral Vector CDx, Shedding Assays; CRISPR/Cas9 & CAR-T Immunogenicity; PCR & Vaccine Assay Performance; ADA Assay Comparabil ity & Cut Point Appropriateness) are published in volume 14 of Bioanalysis, issues 10 and 11 (2022), respectively.

AbstractThe paper focuses on the alchemical laboratory of ancient Greco-Egyptian alchemists, by taking into account especially the earliest alchemical texts (both in the Greek and in the Syriac tradition), ascribed to Pseudo-Democritus, Maria the Jewish and Zosimus. The first part analyzes the possible relationships between the workshops of Egyptian craftsmen (first of all, dyers, metals workers and glass workers) and the activity of the alchemists. The second part gives a general overview on the alchemical instruments described in the Corpus alchemicum.

Background. Consumption of plants such as Carica papaya grown around automobile workshops is common in big cities in Nigeria. However, little is known about the heavy metals contamination of these consumables due to the influence of automobile emissions during maintenance activities. Objectives. This study aimed to assess heavy metal concentrations in C. papaya and supporting soils around automobile workshops in Port Harcourt Metropolis, Rivers State, Nigeria. Methods. Seven automobile workshops were used for the present study. First, 20 m × 20 m quadrats were laid out for soil and C. papaya tissue sampling. One composite soil sample was collected from the topsoil (0–15 cm depth) around each of the automobile workshops. Three C. papaya stands at least 30 cm apart around each workshop were used for the study and from these stands, tissues (root, stem, leaf, fruit) of C. papaya were collected. Standard laboratory techniques were used to determine the pH, electrical conductivity (EC) and heavy metals (lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn)) in the soil samples and C. papaya tissues. Pairwise t-test was used to determine significant differences (p<0.05) in the heavy metal concentrations in soil and C. papaya tissues between the sample and control sites, while correlation statistics were used to determine the relationship of heavy metal concentrations between soil and C. papaya tissues. Results. C. papaya tissues and supporting soil had significantly higher levels of pH, EC and heavy metals in the sampled plots than the control plot. The heavy metal concentrations in C. papaya and soil occurred in the decreasing order of Pb>Cu>Hg>Zn>Cd. The fruit of C. papaya had the highest mean concentrations of Pb (51.4±14.1 mg/kg) and Zn (26.4±1.9 mg/kg), while the leaf had the highest mean concentration of Hg (32.0±2.3 mg/kg). The pH, Cu and Zn in the supporting soil were significantly correlated with the levels in the C. papaya tissues. Conclusion. Bio-accumulation of heavy metals by C. papaya is evident around automobile workshops, and Pb, Hg, Cd concentrations were found to be above the permissible limits for human consumption according to World Health Organization (WHO) standards. Consumption of food materials grown around automobile workshops could pose health risks. Competing interests. The authors declare no competing financial interests.

In order to avoid the cumbersome wiring, limited transmission distance, high power consumption and high cost etc when using cables to transmit data in production workshops, a data transmission system combining ZigBee with USB is researched in this paper. The system hardware adopts the structure of wireless MCU CC2430 and USB interface chip CH372, the software uses the ZigBee2006 protocol stack and the USB2.0 protocol. The paper presents the hardware architecture and principle of the system and analyzes the program design of the upper and lower machines. The laboratory test results indicate that data can be transmitted from any PC to the specified one stably through ZigBee multi-hop network and the USB bus. The implementation of the experiment system has laid the foundation for the wireless data transmission between workshop equipment.

The link between academia, government, and business to improve the development and appropriation of knowledge in certain topics, such as logistics, is being promoted in Colombia. One of the key issues of teaching logistics is try to bring to actual work contexts, problems that can be handled by people who do not have experience. The incorporation of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) in academic environments supports the training of professionals in different fields. The tele-operated laboratory for logistics operations called Internet2 way [TELEOPLOGIS] is a project focused on the development and implementation of a remote laboratory where an integrated and didactic manufacturing cell, some robot manipulators, and specific pieces of software are used for the teaching of logistics operations. This laboratory includes the development of guidelines and academic workshops with two approaches: teleoperation systems for discrete events, and manufacturing cells that transform the cell nodes into elements of logistics operations. We achieved acceptable results in both remote operations and in practices that currently are in progress.

The article highlights the results of the organization of laboratory work using a modern digital training panel on electricity in a laboratory workshop on physics, which was developed and manufactured in Lutsk by the R & D center Mirroschool. As a result of the research, we proposed a method of organizing laboratory work in physics using a training panel. The article contains a fragment of laboratory work in physics, which allows to intensify the cognitive activity of students in teaching physics. The guidelines will be useful primarily for physics teachers and instructors who conduct laboratory work and demonstrations on electricity, laboratory technicians in physical laboratories who work with physical equipment, and will be useful to students who master the knowledge of experimental science. The training panel on electricity fully provides training rooms for physical classrooms, laboratories and training facilities in the section «Electrodynamics», which are used in the school curriculum approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The panel can be used by both teachers and lecturers in higher education institutions. Of course, laboratory work and demonstrations of general secondary education institutions are quite easy to modernize and adapt, which allows you to use other training panels that are presented in the market of educational equipment. But when it comes to higher education or colleges, the list of laboratory work can be significantly reduced, or simply have to use additional educational equipment and laboratory workshops. The electric training panel is a modern, school, educational equipment, which, among other things, successfully agrees with the educational norms of the new Ukrainian school and STEM education. The panel meets all requirements: language legislation, education standards, compliance with sanitary legislation, fire and electrical safety, health care requirements, etc. Also, all consumables are available for purchase in Ukraine. Key words: laboratory work, demonstration, method, training panel, education.

Distance learning has already become a part of the educational process. In this regard, questions appear concerning its organization and the solution of specific problems. They include laboratory workshops, which is an integral part of the educational process in higher education since laboratory works allow students to gain knowledge and acquire skills, which is a prerequisite for the formation of their specialist competence. The problems of obtaining educational information during distance learning can be quite successfully solved. However, the acquisition of experimental skills remains an educational, scientific, and methodological problem that requires a solution. The article defines the peculiarities of using virtual laboratory workshops in the online education of students studying the discipline “Inorganic Chemistry”. The theoretic analysis of the main statements of the research problem was presented in the article. The results of the experimental study have proved that the use of computer modeling and the tools of a virtual laboratory when studying chemistry disciplines increases the educational achievements of the students, regardless of the initial level of knowledge. A prerequisite for the effective acquisition of skills by students is the systematic use of virtual laboratory tools. With the occasional use of virtual laboratory instruments, the skills obtained during the experiment were not learned or were not learned for a long time. The use of virtual laboratories provides independent training for students, increases motivation to master new material. Students focus on the experimental process, not on equipment and tools, as it happens in a real laboratory, which can become both a positive and a negative aspect of acquiring practical skills of future engineers, doctors, and pharmacists.

How to engage underrepresented students in Science and Engineering careers is an important challenge in most rural areas. A formal school environment is not always the best place to learn for many students. Informal, place-based, culturally relevant and applied Science education can be used to engage many students commonly bypassed by formal lecture approaches. Integration of traditional “western” Science with traditional local culture has been proposed to increase engagement and broaden the participation of rural students in Science courses. Principles of chemistry such as colors and dyes were taught in both standard University classes and community workshops. Participant self-assessments were compared with self-assessments of students in introductory chemistry courses at two Universities. The formal course data correlated prior knowledge of content to increased learning gains for basic chemistry concepts. The community workshop participant responses differed with those of formal University students, indicating both location and context of the presentation as factors in engagement. When held in a University classroom and laboratory, where ideas were not related to local cultures and places, learning outcomes were lower in applied knowledge compared to workshops held at a cultural center. A long-term commitment to informal Science education in a community setting is a promising approach to improving diversity in the Science workforce by using applied Science topics and cultural relevance to teach basic concepts.

Most pre-college teachers in the United States have not been trained in astronomy. In Texas, astronomical concepts enter the pre-college science curriculum at all levels.During the last six years, I have presented two different types of workshops: intensive three-week summer institutes for rather small numbers of teachers, and shorter 6- to 18-hour workshops for larger groups. The University of Texas Astronomy Department and McDonald Observatory have hosted five of the intensive institutes. The institutes were established to offer an opportunity to learn astronomy through hands-on activities (Texas education regulations mandate that 40 per cent of all pre-college science classes should be laboratory oriented), and to introduce the teachers to modern astronomical research and facilities.

The effect of learning depends on many factors, among the most important of which are the suitability of a plan for conducting practical exercises and laboratory works that most accurately reflects the purposes and didactic units of the course being studied, and a sufficient level of provision of practical training with methodological guidelines and software tools. Decisions regarding the choice of all these elements depend on a number of conditions, such as the rules and standards in force of a particular educational environment, the format of training, the students’ stuff, and others. The paper proposes a framework generalized plan for conducting laboratory workshops on modeling and simulation courses, summarizing the author's methodological experience. The main prerequisites and principles underlying the composition of the workshops are presented. The set of tools used to perform practical tasks is characterized. Brief characteristics of the goals of each practical task of the generalized plan, the setting of tasks and the software tools used to solve them are given. The ideas and principles presented in the paper can be useful for teachers planning practical lessons on modeling and simulation as well as for developing their methodological and instrumental support.

This paper highlights algebraic and mathematical properties in symmetry with Petri nets in order to control automated systems such as flexible workshops, which represent one of the most important examples in industry and for discrete event systems in general. This project deals with the problem of forbidden state transition by using a new application of the theory of regions for supervisory control. In the literature, most control synthesis methods suffer greatly from a cumbersome calculation burden of the Petri net supervisor given the complex exploration of the state graph. Our new methodology lightens the computational load of the Petri net supervisor by choosing specific regions on the reachability graph, on which the control is calculated offline using CPLEX. The determined controller is activated online if the process enters the chosen region, and deactivated otherwise. All our experiments were applied in a flexible workshop implemented in our research laboratory, which was used to engrave selected models on glass blocks of different colors.

This paper describes a workshop led by female Engineering Technology students, with support from female faculty, to provide an introduction to Engineering Technology to 4th – 7th grade girls through a series of interactive laboratory experiments. This outreach program was developed to improve attitudes towards science and engineering in middle school-aged girls by making science tangible and fun. The workshop takes place on a college campus and makes use of four different Engineering Technology laboratories. Each lab activity includes a hands-on experiment, beginning with an overview of the engineering technology discipline and a brief description of the theories related to the experiment. The day culminates with a panel session between the participants and the college students. An ancillary outcome of the program is that it serves as a community building event for female Engineering Technology college students. Connections are developed between the students and between students and faculty in the college. The college students gain the satisfaction of influencing the attitudes of participants and develop critical communication skills. An attitude survey given to participants before and after the workshop shows that participation in these workshops results in a more positive attitude towards science and technology. College student volunteers were also surveyed after the workshop to determine the impact of their participation. A full workshop description is given in this paper as well as analysis of the assessment results for the participants and the college students.

The formation of the research competence of students in higher education should be purposeful and systematic, since research competence becomes an integral component of the general and professional training of a future specialistwithin the framework of the competency-based approach. The article is devoted to the problem of developing and introducing into the educational process a structurally meaningful model of formation of research competence in students at laboratory workshops in biology. The meaning of the concept“model” is revealed, which is considered as a standard, representing a guideline in the systematization of informationregarding the process under study and reflects the course of the process of forming research competence among students. The developed model of the methodology for the formation of the research competence of biology students combines a combination of a set of target, content, proceduraland evaluatively- effective components and reflects the system-forming connections between them.

Background: The Polytechnic Institute of Tomar (IPT), located in the center of Portugal, has created the Academy of Science, Art and Heritage for children aged eight to fourteen, during their vacations, since 2013, with the aim to educate, stimulate creativity and learning through observation, experimentation and construction, by making available a scientific, diversified and happy learning environment. Purpose: This paper presents the work and challenges IPT Laboratories of Archaeology, Conservation and Restoration, Chemistry, Engineering, Graphic Arts, Physics, Photography and Tourism were faced with in elaborating and run small practical workshops for two groups of up twelve children. Methods: With a duration of one and a half hour, the workshops run with the help of a teacher or technician, plus IPT student-monitors, and are organized to allow a space to learn how to perform, test, apply and/or be creative with the recently acquired knowledge. For a symbolic enrolment tuition, the children stay within IPT premises for a full day, and provided of lunch and two snacks. Results: The children increasingly interest for a laboratory environment work, the gradual developing of their skills, reasoning and motor dexterity capabilities, the group learning experience itself, the increasing interest and happiness of parents, and the positive IPT contribution for helping student-monitors financially, as well as the spreading of IPT work and knowledge towards the local population. Conclusions: The positive and increasingly high development of the children, and the beneficial interaction between a university environment and its local population. Keywords: Learning; Creativity; Experimentation; Leathership; Entrepreneurship; Interdisciplinarity

In entry-level university courses in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields, students participating in associated laboratory sessions generally do better than those who have no related lab classes. This is a problem when, for various reasons, not enough lab sections can be offered for students and/or when students opt out of optional available lab courses. Faced with such a situation, this study evaluated the efficacy of the peer-led team-learning (PLTL) instructional model as a potential method for narrowing the achievement gap among undergraduate students electing not to enroll in an optional laboratory component of an introductory biology course. In peer-led workshops, small groups of students participated in solving problems and other activities that encouraged active learning. Students led by peer leaders attained significantly higher exam and final course grades in introductory biology than comparable students not participating in PLTL. Among the introductory biology students who opted not to enroll in the optional lab course, those who participated in PLTL averaged more than a letter grade higher than those who did not. This difference was statistically significant, and the PLTL workshops almost entirely closed the achievement gap in lecture exam and final grades for students who did not take the lab.

The study examined the impacts of urbanization-related activities on soil quality in Port Harcourt Metropolis-Rivers state, Nigeria. Experimental and survey research designs were implored in the study utilizing GIS and spatial analysis approaches. Both primary and secondary sources of data were used. The primary data were generated through laboratory analysis of soil samples from 15 randomly selected sites within the metropolis;and 800 valid copies of socio-economic questionnaire administered to 800 respondents. Also, public hospitals were visited to ascertain the commonest soil borne diseases in the area. Four research questions, four specific objectives and two hypotheses guided the study. The hypotheses were tested with one sample t-test and one sample chi square using SPSS. Standard scientific and laboratory procedures were followed in the collection and analysis of soil samples. Findings of the study include: urbanization-related activities (e.g. waste dumpsites, mechanic workshops, abattoirs, etc.) cause significant changes on soil quality in the area; and this result to the emergence of soil borne diseases (e.g. Vascular witts, Ascaris lumbricoids,Trichuris trichiura, Strongloids stereoralis) which affects residents’wellbeing. However, there is significant difference in the perceived socioeconomic effects of the diseases across the area. Specifically, laboratory results for soil analysis show that (mean values): pH 7.22, temperature 25.62 °C, PO4 0.342 mg/kg, Pb 120.62 mg/kg, K 66.81 mg/kg, NO3 mg/kg. The study recommended for enforcement of physical planning and development control laws; regular evaluation of the quality of the soil, and restriction on the location of mechanic workshops and waste dumpsites around the metropolis.

It is hard to imagine learning science without doing laboratory or fieldwork. The research work in this paper assessed the state of physics laboratory teaching and learning resources in some selected universities in the South West geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The survey was carried out in five universities namely The University of Lagos, University of Agriculture, Lagos State University, Olabisi Onabanjo University and Covenant University. An 88-item inventory assessment questionnaire was administered and responses were collated for analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data derived from the study. Findings revealed that there is dearth of modern and specialised physics laboratory equipment/resources; and the obsolete state of most workshops. Inadequacy of the available resources was also observed where some universities combine physics students from the Faculties of Education and Science for most practical sessions. Based on the findings, the study proffers some recommendation that could improve the resource situations in these universities. Keywords: Physics, laboratory, learning.
