The solution treatment after nitriding (STAN) was performed to stabilize the γ- phase in a metastable austenitic stainless steel, type 304, and to improve the strength of type 304 by the solid solution of nitrogen. Plasma nitriding was conducted at 500°C for 8.5h, and then solution treatment was performed at 1200°C for 1h. As a result, the static strength and the hardness were improved by the STAN. Rotary bending fatigue tests were performed on the specimens with STAN (solid solution strengthened) together with the untreated and the nitrided ones in laboratory air and in 3%NaCl solution. In laboratory air, the fatigue strength of the solid solution strengthened specimen increased compared to that of the untreated specimens, where fatigue limits were 340MPa and 290MPa for the solid solution strengthened and the untreated, respectively. However, the fatigue limit of the solid solution strengthened specimen was lower than that of the nitrided specimen, that is, 380MPa. On the other hand, in 3%NaCl solution, the fatigue strengths of the nitrided specimens and the solid solution strengthened specimens decreased significantly compared to those in laboratory air. After the fatigue tests at the stress level of fatigue limit in laboratory air, the strain-induced martensitic transformation was examined by XRD. In the solid solution strengthened specimens, the strain-induced martensitic transformation was not detected during fatigue tests until 3x107 cycles, indicating that the γ- phase was stabilized by the solid solution of nitrogen.

The influence of genetic modification of food on health as a contemporary social issueThe article attempts to demonstrate that the process of genetic modification of food and its consequences in the form of influencing the health of entire societies, agro-ecosystems and the environment, which increasingly depends on the degree to which basic needs are met, is a contemporary social issue. Based on the results of mainly biochemical and biotechnological research, the types of genetic modifications of food and their impact on health have been analysed. Secondary analysis of the studies allowed the identification of multi-organ dysfunction syndrome of laboratory animals in reaction to the consumption of genetically modified plants. The paper also analyses the documents of the European Union and the Polish legislation concerning the admission to cultivation and subsequent trade of food products containing genetically modified ingredients.

Sustained by a supreme self-confidence, Ulam preferred pioneering new fields of mathematics to elaborating the ideas of others. Indeed, impatient with detail he tended to leave technicalities to those with whom he collaborated. Uprooted from his native Poland in his twenties, Ulam was to spend two thirds of his working life associated with or employed by the Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Abstract Background Although SARS-CoV-2 predominantly targets the respiratory system, it has also been associated with vascular complications including stroke. Identifying COVID-19 patients at elevated risk for stroke can help inform target anticoagulation strategies. We sought to understand how symptoms and laboratory markers at presentation with COVID-19 relate to stroke risk. Methods We enrolled a cohort of 1324 subjects who were hospitalized with COVID-19 across six PennMedicine hospitals between April and August 2020 and performed retrospective, manual chart review to measure exposures including presenting symptoms and admission inflammatory markers. Data were organized with a REDCap database, and analyses were performed using R statistical software, with Bayesian binomial regression models fit using Stan Hamiltonian Monte Carlo via the “brms” package. Results Among 1324 subjects, 19 stroke events were observed within 30 days of COVID-19 diagnosis. Admission inflammatory markers, including C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), ferritin, and D-dimer, were poor predictors of stroke risk. Among presenting symptoms, including respiratory, gastrointestinal, dermatologic, and neurologic features of COVID-19 disease, only altered mental status documented on presentation (in 529 subjects) was significantly associated with stroke risk (odds ratio 6.06, 95% credible interval 2.16 - 18.7). Conclusion Inflammatory markers associated with COVID-19 disease severity did not discriminate patients at high versus low risk of stroke in this cohort. Altered mental status documented on presentation was significantly associated with incident stroke during COVID-19 disease. Artykuł przedstawia wyniki badań laboratoryjnych przyczepności zaczynów cementowych do trzech formacji skalnych, tj. rdzeni powstałych z piaskowca, mułowca oraz węgla kamiennego. Przygotowane rdzenie skalne (przed zalaniem zaczynem cementowym) poddawane były procesowi przemywania w różnych cieczach (prowadzono też badania dla tzw. rdzeni suchych). Do badań przyczepności wytypowano recepturę zaczynu cementowego zawierającą 1% nanotlenku glinu (n-Al2O3) oraz recepturę konwencjonalną (porównawczą, tj. bez udziału nanokomponentu). Badane zaczyny cementowe miały dobre parametry technologiczne, umożliwiające ich zastosowanie do uszczelniania kolumn rur okładzinowych w otworach wiertniczych o temperaturze dynamicznej około 35°C oraz ciśnieniu około 15 MPa. Po wykonaniu szeregu badań laboratoryjnych stwierdzono, że zaczyn zawierający dodatek 1% n-Al2O3 w wyraźny sposób podnosił przyczepność kamienia cementowego do formacji skalnej. Uzyskane wartości przyczepności dla zaczynu z n-Al2O3 w porównaniu z wartościami otrzymanymi dla zaczynu konwencjonalnego są około 30–40% wyższe. Analizując przyczepność kamienia cementowego (z dodatkiem i bez dodatku nanokomponentu) do różnego rodzaju formacji skalnych, należy zaznaczyć, że: najwyższą przyczepność zanotowano w przypadku piaskowca, nieco niższą – mułowca (około 80–85% wartości przyczepności uzyskanej dla piaskowca), a najniższą – węgla (około 70–75% wartości przyczepności uzyskanej dla piaskowca). Zależność ta zachodzi w podobny sposób w przypadku rdzeni „suchych”, jak i przemytych płuczką, buforem oraz cieczą przemywającą. Należy podkreślić niezwykle istotną rolę odpowiedniego procesu przemywania otworu wiertniczego przed wykonaniem zabiegu cementowania rur okładzinowych. Zastosowanie samego buforu może okazać się niewystarczające. Dodatkowe użycie odpowiednio dobranej cieczy przemywającej pozwala skutecznie usunąć resztki osadu filtracyjnego pozostającego na powierzchni formacji skalnej po jej przewierceniu, co powinno znacznie poprawić stan zacementowania otworu wiertniczego.

Abstract It is well known that sound absorption and sound transmission properties of open porous materials are highly dependent on their airflow resistance values. Low values of airflow resistance indicate little resistance for air streaming through the porous material and high values are a sign that most of the pores inside the material are closed. The laboratory procedures for measuring airflow resistance have been stan- dardized by several organizations, including ISO and ASTM for both alternate flow and continuous flow. However, practical implementation of these standardized methods could be both complex and expensive. In this work, two indirect alternative measurement procedures were compared against the alternate flow standardized technique. The techniques were tested using three families of eco-friendly sound absorbent materials: recycled polyurethane foams, coconut natural fibres, and recycled polyester fibres. It is found that the values of airflow resistance measured using both alternative methods are very similar. There is also a good correlation between the values obtained through alternative and standardized methods.

AbstractIntroduction:During the 2004 North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit, essential counter-measures, including medical preparedness, were taken to cope with any suspected terrorist case or events including the use of chemical or biological (CB) weapons.The Summit was held in Istanbul, a city that bridges two continents, and involved the participation of many Heads of State, Prime Ministers, and Defense Ministers from 26 NATO countries.Methods:First responders, including medical Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) teams, received special training. Essential equipment, including drugs, antidotes, detectors, etc., was provided and stockpiled. Medical authorities augmented the capacity for identifying and con- trolling the injuries and any emerging CB incident through the set-up of decontamination units and the procurement of medical devices, antidotes, drugs, and personal protective suits. Additionally, a small part of the recently established NATO-CBRN battalion was welcomed to the Summit and was prepared to perform detection and identification of the agent found in suspicious appearing samples.Results:Although no CB incident was reported during the Summit, extensive experience was gained with respect to medical preparedness against CB terrorism. Sampling, detection, and analysis of toxic materials were taken into account in the medical management. Much laboratory-related work was conducted in the following time period. The laboratory work involved the stan-dardization of sampling and transportation procedures, development of both mobile and reference laboratories, and performing research activities aimed to make the CB analysis more efficient.Although the training of the medical staff was advanced, training should be continuous and supported with educational programs, conferences, meetings, and tabletop and hospital medical exercises throughout the country.Conclusion:Multidisciplinary cooperation, training, and preparedness should be provided to basic medical care units and centers as part of the medical planning aimed at perfect detection and surveillance, laboratory analysis, and emergency response.

Abstract Scarcity of research focusing on the evaluation of the coal seam methane pressure as a parameter determining the outburst risk makes it difficult to assess the value for which the level of this risk increases considerably. It is obvious that, apart from the gas factor, the evaluation of the threat should also take into account the strength factor. The research presented in this paper attempted at estimating the level of the outburst risk on the basis of the coal seam methane pressure value and firmness of coal. In this work, the author seeks to present both the relevant laboratory research and the measurements carried out in mines.

Abstract Background: Graves’ disease is an immune-mediated cause of thyrotoxicosis treated with anti-thyroid drugs (ADTs), radioactive iodine (RAI) or thyroidectomy. Thyroidectomy has been documented to have the lowest rate of recurrence amongst treatment options1. Data regarding long-term recurrence rates is limited beyond 54 months. Clinical Case: An asymptomatic 59 year old female was found to have recurrent thyrotoxicosis on routine laboratory testing. The patient underwent thyroidectomy at age 19 years for Graves’ disease. Prior records unavailable to clarify initial surgical intervention. The patient had post-surgical hypothyroidism which was managed with levothyroxine 100mcg once daily for over 20 years. A biochemically euthyroid state was clearly documented on prior laboratory testing. Initial laboratory testing with TSH <0.01mIU/L (0.45-4.50), FT3 2.8ng/dL (0.8-1.7). Levothyroxine was discontinued with persistent thyrotoxicosis after 8 weeks: TSH <0.01, FT3 5.7, FT4 1.74. Radioactive Iodine Uptake and scan was obtained after administration of 6uCi of iodine-131 which demonstrated 50.8% uptake of radioactive iodine at 24 hours (Normal 10-30%). The left thyroid gland was noted to be in normal position and enlarged with diffuse increase intensity of radiotracer uptake. The right thyroid gland was surgically absent. The patient subsequently underwent completion thyroidectomy with endocrine surgery with resolution of hyperthyroid state. Surgical pathology was benign and consistent with Graves’ disease and multinodular goiter. The patient did become hypothyroid post-operatively and required levothyroxine replacement. She is clinically and biochemically euthyroid on levothyroxine 100mcg once daily 14 months post-operatively. Conclusion: This is a case of recurrent hyperthyroidism approximately 40 years after definitive treatment with thyroidectomy. Although it is unclear whether patient underwent total thyroidectomy or subtotal thyroidectomy for initial intervention, the recurrence of thyrotoxicosis after such a long period of time has not previously been reported in the literature to the knowledge of this writer. This has important implications regarding the underlying pathophysiology of Graves’ disease and the ability of remnant thyroid tissue to regenerate over time. The study was aimed to evaluate clinical efficacy, safety, and tolerability of 3 day course of azythromycin (Zitrolid forte) in comparison with a stan dard 7 to 10 day therapy with amoxicillin (Flemoxin solutab) in patients with mild community acquired pneumonia (CAP). Included patients were randomized in 2 groups: 1) 20 patients taking Zitrolid 500 mg daily for 3 days (15 males, 5 females, mean age, 40.7 ± 18.4 yrs); 2) 20 patients taking amoxicillin 500 mg t.i.d. for 7 to 10 days (13 males, 7 females, mean age, 39.8 ± 12.5 yrs). Pneumonia was confirmed by chest X ray in all the patients. Severity of pneumonia was assessed with PSI score. In the 1st group, 12 (60 %) of patients had PSI class I and 8 (40 %) had PSI class II. In the 2nd group, there were 13 (65 %) and 7 (35 %), respectively. In the 1st group patients, improvement in clinical signs and laboratory parame ters was noted at the 3rd day of therapy and complete recovery was detected at the 7th day. The 2nd group patients demonstrated similar dynamics at the 7th and the 14th days, respectively. Microbiological efficacy of the drugs was equal (100 %). The drugs did not differ in rate of adverse events. Therefore, 3 day course of azythromycin in patients with mild CAP were as effective as standard (7 to 10 days) therapy with amoxicillin. Azythromycin (Zitrolid forte) was well tolerated with no serious adverse events requiring interruption the treatment.

By using an immunoisolation procedure (Stan, R.-V., W.G. Roberts, K. Ihida, D. Predescu, L. Saucan, L. Ghitescu, and G.E. Palade. 1997. Mol. Biol. Cell. 8:595–605) developed in our laboratory, we have isolated a caveolar subfraction from rat lung endothelium and we have partially characterized the proteins of this subfraction which include an apparently caveolae-specific glycoprotein we propose to call PV-1 (formerly known as gp68). The isolation and partial sequencing of PV-1, combined with the cloning of the full length PV-1 cDNA led to the following conclusions: (a) PV-1 is a novel single span type II integral membrane protein (438 amino acids long) which forms homodimers in situ; (b) the transmembrane domain of PV-1 is near the NH2 terminus defining a short cytoplasmic endodomain and a large COOH-terminal ectodomain exposed to the blood plasma; (c) PV-1 is N-glycosylated and its glycan antennae bear terminal nonreducing galactosyl residues in α1-3 linkage. PV-1 is expressed mostly in the lung but both the messenger RNA and the protein can be detected at lower levels also in kidney, spleen, liver, heart, muscle, and brain. No signal could be detected in testis and two lower molecular weight forms were detected in brain. Immunocytochemical studies carried out by immunodiffusion on rat lung with an anti–PV-1 polyclonal antibody directed against a COOH-terminal epitope reveal a specific localization of PV-1 to the stomatal diaphragms of rat lung endothelial caveolae and confirm the extracellular orientation of the PV-1 COOH terminus.

Context. It is known that in addition to transient ischemic attacks and insults, hypertension is often the cause of asymptomatic brain damage, including cognitive impairment (CI). Most of these studies show a positive relationship between midlife hypertension and cognitive decline at the advanced age. CI significantly affect the quality of life of patients, reduce the ability to learn, acquire new knowledge and skills, force them to change their usual way of life and often stop or reduce professional activities. Objective. To analyze the condition of cognitive functions in patients with stage 1 and stage 2 hypertension of 2nd-3rd degrees, with moderate and high cardiovascular risk and evaluate their gender peculiarities. Materials and methods. The study included 90 patients with stage 1 and stage 2 hypertension. The average age of patients with hypertension was 49.66 ± 8.74 years old. The average course of the disease was 7.7 ± 3.9 years. The comparison group consisted of 46 healthy individuals with normal blood pressure levels and without hypertension in anamnesis (the average age - 45.88 ± 3.03 years old). Applied methods included general clinical, methods of neuropsychological testing (MMSE, GPCOG, W. Schulte test), standard general clinical and biochemical laboratory methods (blood lipid spectrum, blood glucose, creatinine with GFR, electrolytes), instrumental (12-lead ECG, ambulatory monitoring of blood pressure, echocardiography in B-, D-modes), and statistical methods. Results. Patients with hypertension scored significantly less on the MMSE scale (26.82 ± 1.41 scores vs. 28.89 ± 0.82 scores, p = 0.001) and GPCOG (6.63 ± 1.88 scores vs. 8.35 ± 0.71 scores, p = 0.001) compared with healthy individuals and spent more time on performing Walter Schulte test (46.51 ± 8.59 seconds vs. 36.69 ± 6.77 seconds, p = 0.001). Moderate CI were detected in 36 patients (40.00 %) among the examined hypertensive patients; it means that the total score of MMSE was 24-26 scores (the norm is 27-30 scores). The total score on the MMSE scale was 25.47 ± 0.88 in hypertensive patients with CI and was significantly lower than in hypertensive patients without CI (р = 0.001). Cognitive functions in patients with CI were characterized by poorer indices of memory, counting and executive functions. It should be noted that the revealed changes had more reliable manifestations in male hypertensive patients. In particular, the total score on the MMSE scale was 26.57 ± 1.37, while in female ones it was 27.19 ± 1.41 scores (p = 0.04). CI on the MMSE scale were diagnosed in 43.4 % (n = 23) of male patients and in 35.1 % (n = 13) of female patients. The total score was also higher on the GPCOG scale in female patients - 6.89 ± 1.85 scores vs. 6.45 ± 1.89 scores, p = 0.26. Instead, the time to complete the tasks according to the Walter Schulte tables was longer in male patients - 47.74 ± 8.85 seconds vs. 47.73 ± 7.99 seconds, p = 0.10, respectively. The parameters of counting functions were significantly lower (p = 0.01) in the group of male hypertensive patients compared with female ones. Besides, men had lower indicators of short-term memory and orientation, women reproduced worse verbal material, but the difference was statistically insignificant (p-value more than 0.05). The sum of scores on the MMSE scale conversely correlated with male gender (r = -0.22, p = 0.03). The risk of low values of MMSE indices in male patients with hypertension was 42.00 % higher than in female ones (OR = 1.42 ± 0.32, with 95% CІ [0.18-2.65]). Conclusions. Hypertension is a significant independent risk factor for developing new cases of cognitive impairment. In particular, among the patients with stage 1 and stage 2 hypertension of 2nd-3rd degrees, with moderate and high cardiovascular risk, moderate cognitive impairment was revealed in 36 patients (40,00 %), the revealed changes were more manifested in male hypertensive patients.

Abstract Background Countless diseases and medications have been implicated in the past as causing prolongation of the QT interval. Their unique role through the means of quantifying the definite magnitude of relative risk they contribute during hospitalization still requires further investigation. The aim of this study was to describe the impact of commonly used anti-infectives on the QT interval in hospitalized patients during the COVID-19 era. Methods Demographic information, medical history, laboratory data, medication administration history and ECG recording data was collected from the electronic records of adult patients admitted to two urban hospitals. A mixed effects approach with four sub-models for the QT interval comprised of: heart rate, circadian rhythm, gender, and the drug (regressed as the cumulative mg dose administered over time) and disease effects was used. Fixed and random effects with between occasion variability were estimated for the parameters with a Bayesian approach using the STAN software. Results Data from 2180 patients were used with baseline characteristics shown in Table 1. Observed vs. predicted plots based on the training (Figure 1.A) and validation data set (Figure 1.B) showed excellent fit. The parameters for QTc0, α, gender, and circadian rhythm were identified within the range previously described (Table 2.). Similarly, the model correctly identified the impact of acute or chronic diseases on the QT interval. Model coefficient estimates [mean (95% CI) of 0.010 (0.006, 0.15) and 0.0045 (0.0013, 0.01100) msec/mg cumulative dose, respectively] suggest that patients treated with conventional regimens of fluconazole and levofloxacin are most likely to present with a QT interval increase > 5 msec, the cutoff threshold of regulatory concern. When adjusted for these confounding variables, estimates of QT interval prolongation show that treatment with fluconazole and levofloxacin pose a considerable risk; while treatment with azithromycin or hydroxychloroquine is of moderate risk for QT interval prolongation. Introduction. An automobile vehicle consists of a large number of parts that affect traffic safety in different ways. The elements that critically affect the safety of the vehicle include automobile pneumatic tires. Their technical condition is currently being assessed visually, without the use of special equipment. This diagnostic method does not provide detection of hidden tire damage. This article describes the proposed method of diagnosing pneumatic tires of passenger cars, as well as the scheme of the stand for its implementation.Materials and methods. Based on previous studies, it was proposed to use the static stiffness of automobile tires as a diagnostic parameter when assessing their technical condition. To implement the use of this diagnostic parameter, a new method for assessing the technical condition of tires was proposed. It consists in determining and comparing the values of the static stiffness of the tire at its various points with the average stiffness value at all measurement points. To implement this method in the laboratory, a schematic diagram of the stand was proposed.Results. In accordance with the proposed scheme of the stand, a volumetric model of the stand was developed for the implementation of the proposed method in laboratory conditions, and the frame of the stand was made and its main elements were selected. As a converter of the rotational movements of the potentiometer handle into the electronic signal, it was decided to use the Arduino Uno R3 analog-to-digital converter. Software was also developed to automate the reading and processing of bus diagnostic results.Discussion and conclusions. The proposed method of tire diagnostics and the stand implementing it can increase the efficiency and simplicity of assessing the technical condition of pneumatic tires of passenger cars. Further research is needed to assess the effectiveness of the proposed solutions.

Abstract Background Torsades de pointes is a life-threatening ventricular tachycardia associated with prolongation of the QT interval. Many diseases and medications have been implicated as potentially prolonging the QT interval, but little data exists regarding the means of quantifying this risk. The aim of this study was to describe the impact of commonly used antimicrobials on the QT interval in hospitalized patients. Methods Demographic, diseases, laboratory, medication administration history and ECG recording data were collected from the electronic records of adult patients admitted, from July 2018 to December 2018, to two urban hospitals. A model for the QT interval comprised of four sub-models: gender, heart rate, circadian rhythm, and the drug and disease effects. Fixed and random effects with between occasion variability were estimated for the parameters. A Bayesian approach using the NUTS in STAN was used via the brms package in the R® software. Results Data from 1,353 patients were used with baseline characteristics shown in Table 1. Observed vs. predicted plots based on the training (Figure 1A) and validation data set (Figure 1B) showed a great fit. The parameters for QTc0, α, gender, and circadian rhythm were accurately identified (Table 2). Similarly, the model correctly described the expected impact of acute or chronic diseases on the QT interval. Uncertainty interval estimates (Figure 2) show that patients treated with fluconazole and levofloxacin are likely to present with a QT interval [mean (95% CI) of 6.84 (0.22,21.45) and 5.05 (0.15, 16.70), respectively], that is > 5 ms longer vs. no treatment, the minimum cutoff that should evoke further risk assessment of QT interval prolongation. Conclusion The model developed correctly describes the impact baseline risk factors have on the QT interval. Point estimates of QT interval prolongation show that patients treated with fluconazole and levofloxacin may be at considerable risk; while those treated with azithromycin or ciprofloxacin are more likely to be at an insignificant risk for QT interval prolongation during hospital admission. Further workup to quantify the impact of concomitant treatment with these and other at-risk medications is underway. Disclosures All authors: No reported disclosures.

The article presents a concept of the laboratory stand for wind turbine simulation, built on the basis of cage induction motor, supplied from a frequency converter. The model assumes control of the engine torque, using simple constant Volt/Hertz control with slip regulation, taking into account the moment of inertia of the simulated turbine. Performance of the system for different wind and generator load conditions has been shown. Test results proved, that the turbine torque is well tracked by the wind motor emulator.

The present study was carried on to compare several methods for identification of Cryptosporidium oocysts sp. which conclude modified acid fast stain, Sheather's flotation solutions, Ritchi formal-ether sedimentation solutions, noval stain and iodine technique. The modified acid-fast stain and its combination with formal – ether technique gave the best demonstration 100%. The most reliable technique for identification of oocysts was formal-ether concentration combination with modified acid fast stain (100%), followed by using modified acid fast stain only (97%), sucrose flotation technique (90%) novel staining technique (85%), formal ether concentration (84%), and iodine technique (69%) respectively.

Abstract Adoptive transfer of primary (unmodified) or genetically engineered antigen-specific T cells has demonstrated astonishing clinical results in the treatment of infections and some malignancies. The definition of optimal targets and antigen receptors as well as the differentiation status of transferred T cells are emerging as crucial parameters for generating cell products with predictable efficacy and safety profiles. Our laboratory has demonstrated that defined subsets within the memory CD8+ T cell compartment fulfill all key characteristics of adult tissue stem cells and are essential for robust and long-term maintained responses upon adoptive transfer. We have developed clinical multi-parameter enrichment technologies to purify these memory stem cells for clinical applications. In my presentation I will report on the status of ongoing clinical trials using such purified cell products either as a primary T cell population for the treatment of infections upon allogeneic stem cell transplantation or after genetic modification with a CD19 CAR for the treatment of malignancies (collaboration with Stan Riddell, FHCC/Seattle). Infusing small numbers of T cells within a memory stem cell product can be highly effective therapeutically, but bears some risk of toxicity. Therefore, safeguards that allow selective depletion of transferred cells in the case of un-tolerable side effects may be needed to further improve adoptive immunotherapy. I will present results exploring the capacity of a truncated version of EGFR (EGFRt) co-expressed with T cells expressing a CD19-CAR. In pre-clinical mouse models we demonstrate that application of Cetuximab, which binds to EGFRt, confers selective depletion of adoptively transferred CAR-T cells in vivo. Long-term B cell aplasia, which is a main side effect of CD19-CAR T cell therapy, can be completely reverted with this strategy. Vaccination studies upon B cell recovery demonstrate full functionality of antigen-specific antibody formation. EGFRt co-expressing CD19-CAR T cells have been successfully transferred into first human patients, providing the option to test for the first time in a clinical setting whether treatment of B cell aplasia after long-term leukemia remission can be achieved by selective depletion. Abstract Clinical laboratory automation has developed over the past decade as one means of consolidating testing, reducing costs, and improving the effectiveness of laboratory testing. Most of the developments have been aimed at core clinical laboratory operations, and have primarily addressed preanalytical and analytical processing of traditional specimens arriving in blood collection or similar aliquot tubes. Much less attention has been given to specialized applications such as processing specimens for urine toxicology, and only recently have vendors attacked the problems associated with sorting and maintaining the laboratory’s inventory of specimens. This report highlights selected developments in these areas, describes one approach to cost-effective custom platform development, and discusses the advantages and pitfalls to solving problems with laboratory automation.

A single axis rotary platform is distinguished among the laboratory equipment for testing gyroscopic devices and systems and their sensitive elements. An overview of the design principles of industrially developed stands for the study of static and dynamic characteristics of gyroscopic devices and systems is provided. The scheme of design of the universal laboratory stand is suggested as the compact rotary platform for research of static and dynamic characteristics of micromechanical gyroscopes and accelerometers as sensors of angular speed. The physical components of such a stand and technical and technological problems of its practical implementation are reviewed. The proposed laboratory stand is considered as a cyberphysical system where computing components play a crucial role in determining the parameters of the system and the studied micromechanical sensors. For this purpose, in addition to the physical control loop of the electric drive to ensure the stability of the angular velocity of the platform, an independent measuring loop is considered for analytical determination of system parameters, including the studied micromechanical sensors. The versatility of the stand is ensured by solving the inverse problems, namely determining in the process of testing static and dynamic characteristics of the electric drive and measuring sensors that work on various physical principles. It is assumed that, in addition to solving practical problems of micromechanical sensors in the development of the appropriate information interface of the virtual device, a compact laboratory stand can be effectively used in the educational process during laboratory work in relevant disciplines of instrument making direction.

The increasing availability of laboratory information management modules within enterprise electronic health record solutions has resulted in some institutional administrators deciding which laboratory information system will be used to manage workflow within the laboratory, often with minimal input from the pathologists. This article aims to educate pathologists on many of the issues and implications this change may have on laboratory operations, positioning them to better evaluate and represent the needs of the laboratory during this decision-making process. The experiences of the authors, many of their colleagues, and published observations relevant to this debate are summarized. There are multiple dimensions of the interdependency between the pathology laboratory and its information system that must be factored into the decision. Functionality is important, but management authority and gap-ownership are also significant elements to consider. Thus, the pathologist must maintain an active role in the decision-making process to ensure the success of the laboratory.

This study was performed to detect the effective laboratory method for diagnosis of Cryptosporidium spp. in patients attending the laboratories of Al-Tameem General Hospital and Kirkuk Paediatric Hospital in Kirkuk city, for the period from the beginning of January to end of August 2000.. It was shown that the modified Ziehl-Neelsens stain (hot method) with methylene blue (counter stain) was most efficient in identification of Cryptosporidium oocysts (4.36%), followed by malachite green (counter stain) (1.94%) and modified Ziehl-Neelsen (cold method) with malachite green (counter stain), safranin methylene blue, lugol s iodine preparation (mounting) (0.97%) for each and the modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain (cold method) with methylene blue (counter stain) was the least efficient (0.84%). .

Анотація:
The article presents the stages of creating a virtual laboratory stand for performing the cycle of tests of the system response to dynamic excitation. To create the virtual laboratory stand was used the PLM Siemens NX 8.5 software. It was shown the method of realization the dynamic analysis in the Motion Simulation module, which result was the characteristic (form) of the system excitation. Then, on the virtual laboratory stand, was conducted the analysis of vibration of the investigated system realized in the Advanced Simulation module. For calculations was used the “Response Simulation” solver, which allows analyzing the system responses to dynamic excitations. Next the results were compared with vibrations measurements made on the real laboratory stand. This lets to verify and adjust the created FEM model.

Анотація:
The Eco-Energy Engineering course for students of Mechanical Engineering at Master level at AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow is predominantly theoretical, with the additional computer-aided projects. In order to improve the quality of the course and make the learning process easier for students, some practical elements were introduced. One of them is the presented laboratory stand for the measurement and analysis of photovoltaic modules. The proposed platform consists of a photovoltaic module, rechargeable battery, variable load, charge controller, digital thermometer, solar radiation sensor, and measuring circuit. All the measured variables are stored on the SD card. Also, PC can be connected via the USB port. In order to make the teaching more dynamical, this stand was designed as mobile and it does not need an external power supply. A prototype of the stand was built and tested in real conditions during laboratory classes. A positive feedback from students showed the correctness of the proposed learning schedule and the didactic potential of the laboratory stand.
