Our dissertation discusses the literary representation of female characters involved in the oath scenes of classic literature. In the first section of this work oath is analyzed from a linguistic, historical, juridical and anthropological point of view, providing references to many historical and literary sources. The second section consists of a selection of greek and latin texts of the archaic, classic and hellenistic period: our comment focuses on the oath formula, gestures and on the role of female characters, underlining the complex relation created by the interaction of female representation and oath as a speech act and an authoritative utterance. Each text is both exemplary for a specific phenomenology and it is indicative of peculiar literary themes, which are discussed. This tension between gender performance and performative language sometimes reveals a criticism concerned with social conventions and traditional values. Furthermore, it is also possible to identify some topic elements in different literary genres and to define some fixed and recurrent schemes.

This text is transmitted in Greek, Coptic, Arabic and Ethiopian and the present work consists of a critical edition of the Greek version, still inedited. The story tells about the evangelization of Parthia through the apostles Andrew and Bartholomew and through an anthropophagus with monstrous aspect (Cristomaios/Christian), who was converted and became instrumentum fidei.

The dissertation is divided in two chapters and three appendix. In Chapter I, Music and pain, we investigate the cases of metamusicality in reference to pain in Euripides: he elaborates a reflection on the role of mousike compared to the pain, manifested by a medical and musical vocabulary. It is shown that in E. there is the problem of what purpose has the music, whether it is useful, and in what form it is. In the first production E. theorizes a mousa of lament that is sweet or therapeutic for sufferers. Many characters, however, show no confidence in the healing power of lament. In the last production questions about the performance of the song increase, and are characterized as cases of metamusicality and metatheatrality. In the Helen, Hypsipyle and Bacchae E. seems to offer a 'homeopathic' music therapy through Dionysiac music. In Chapter II, Nature and music, we choose the Iphigenia Taurica as an example of orchestic and musical mimesis, based on a natural imagery and on cases of self-referentiality. It contributes to the expressiveness of the music and choreia on stage. We suppose also a musical accompaniment which is mimetic of natural sounds and movements, and combines linear and circular formations (that recall the 'double nature' of dithyramb). Appendix I, The poetic adjectives ξουθός and ξουθόπτερος: their significance and their allusive force, faces a problematic case of 'lexical mimesis', made up of ξουθός and the euripidean compound ξουθόπτερος. It is shown that the word originally means a vibratory movement, but develops a sense of sound, and it is therefore a term able to evoke the performance. In Appendix II, The musical lexicon in Euripides, the musical and dancing lexicon of Euripides is collected. In Appendix III, The mousike in Euripides’ tragedies, the musical references of each drama are collected.

My thesis offers a systematic study of all the sound changes classifiable as 'Compensatory Lengthening' (CL) in the history of the Ancient Greek language. The importance of such vowel lengthenings in Greek historical phonology and dialectology is of course well known, but several individual developments are still debated or poorly understood. Special attention has been paid to the current debate on CL in theoretical phonology, and to correctly applying the insights of general linguistics to the Greek facts. For each instance of CL in Greek, I have tried to propose an explanation which is consistent both with other known developments of Greek and with universal, cross-linguistic tendencies. Greek is found to confirm the recent view that there is not one single rule or mechanism responsible for CL, but that several kinds exist, some operating directly at the level of abstract phonological structure, some arising form the phonologization of gradual, phonetically-conditioned developments. Both types are found to be well-represented in Greek. However, one typology of CL that has often been postulated for Greek (i.e. CL from degemination) did not, in fact, exist in this language. The last part of this study is devoted to four separate cases of apparent irregularity in the distribution of CL, or in the timbre of the resulting long vowel. After an etymological and philological analysis of all the relevant material, explanations are proposed for the irregularities.

Entrambi i tipi risultano ben rappresentati in greco.

This dissertation proposes a philological and literary analysis of selected statements of poetic novelty, from Homer to go as far as to Hellenism. The first passage I deal with is Telemachus’statement about the song of Phemius in Book I of the Odyssey (Od. I 351s.), and I come to the conclusion that novelty coincides with overlapping planes between the singing of returns and the return of Odysseus in its making. Regarding archaic lyric, I examine two Alcman’s self-celebrating seals (PMGF 39; PMGF 17), one of which is still too tied to the poetics of mimesis, and four verses from the Corpus Theognideum, which describe the mission of the poet through a series of activities (Thgn. 769-772). In most of these cases I come to the conclusion that poetic novelty does not coincide almost never with the concept of ‘originality’. Then I focus on Pindar’s poetic experience – notably N. 8, 19-21 – which is fundamental to all subsequent poetic declarations of novelty: the poet consciously reflects on the danger of exposing novelty to his detractors / rivals and uses a particular poetic language. The following long chapter deals with the sphragis of Timotheus’ Persians (PMG 791, 202-236), in which we can find all the topoi of the defense and legitimation of poetic novelty: the refutation of the critics, the definition of a new category of bad poets, the reinterpretation of tradition through a model of the past and the ultimate celebration of poetic novelty.

This work aims at collecting a group of texts of unknown authorship on papyrus or ostracon which preserves a geographical content. The texts have been selected using the tools normally used in papyrological studies, included online databases. Then, they have been grouped according to their tipology or their content. In the first chapter, prose etno-geographic fragments have been considered, with a detailed comment and proposals regarding authorship, when possible. In the second chapter, three text concerning the flooding of the Nile are studied in a comparative perspective. The third chapter is about texts in which geography, myht and Homer are combined together, with addition of some considerations on ancient Homeric filology on papyrus. Finally, the fourth and last chapter deals with geographical lists, less interesting from a strictly literary point of view, but indeed useful in considering and defining ancient geography.

This dissertation aims to be a further step in the investigation of the sources and the manuscript tradition of the «scholia h» of the Iliad. It consists of an edition af the whole exegetical corpus (scholia marginal, interlinear, intermarginal and recentiora) of the manuscripts Ambrosianus A 181 sup. (XIV cent.) and Parisinus gr. 2766 (XV cent.), two witnesses of the h1 branch of the bipartite manuscript tradition of the scholia h, as reconstructed by H. Erbse. Scholia h are a long time neglected yet primary strand of Homeric philology, as they had indipendent access to the same prestigious sources from which also the Venetus A, the Etymologicum Genuinum and Eustathius drew, namely the lost Commentary of Apion and Herodorus (ApH), the D scholia, and an exegetical commentary, to which h added information excerpted from later works as the Epimerismi Homerici. The h recension, as both its palaeographical and codicological structure and its exegetical corpus seem to prove, appears to be a byzantine ‘commented edition’ of the Iliad made by a school teacher in the XI cent., where fragments of ancient Homeric scholia coexists with more trivial and pedantic dissertations. In this way h is both a non negligible witness of ancient exegesis and an eminent testimony of the study and reception of Homeric poetry in Byzantium.

The sixth and fifth century’s b. C. was a fundamental turning point for the Greek culture as it brought about crucial cultural changes: the various literary genres began to clearly define their boundaries, trying to emerge from a fluid and magmatic context. Bacchylides’ lyric poetry shows evident contact points with other literary genres both in content and structure. It is characterized by a strong tendency to 'eclecticism', a style that makes it atypical compared to pindaric poetry. The emphasis of this work will be on the poet’s reception in the Alexandrian age, with particular attention to the aesthetic and cultural dynamics that favored its entry into the canon of lyric poets, and on its interactions with the contemporary literary genres. The work is divided into four chapters. Chapter I deals with the reception of bacchylidean poetry by the erudites of the hellenistic age. Particular attention is put on the fortune of the Ceo poet in the Greek world in regard to the analysis of the lyrical canon. Chapter II is dedicated to the complexed and versatile relationship between Bacchylides poetry and the epic genre, which at the time had great prestige and resonance with the affirmation of the epic-rhapsodies circles. Chapter III, which analyzes the relationship between the bacchylidean lyric and the emerging literary genres, is divided into two sections, focusing respectively on the contact points with the fable and mythological genre. Finally, chapter IV proposes to treat the relationship between Bacchylides’s poetry and the tragic genre from a different perspective. The purpose of this work is to approach bacchylidean poetry in a selective way, starting from the best preserved poems, to provide an overview of the bacchylidean operas in the panorama of the literary genre of the time.

By the reading and analysis of the remaining fragments of the Ninus Romance it can be seen that the dynamics of the characters, even if broadly related to the structure of the Greek novel of the Imperial Age, do not correspond to a Greek culture matrix, therefore the origin of the text was elsewhere, more precisely in the environment that immediately emerges from the fragments, namely the Mesopotamian one. Many elements of the plot of this 'novel', which contain in them germs and ways that will be taken up again in the Imperial Era, are strongly influenced, in fact, by patterns and plots of the ancient Near East. All these elements appear congruent to a syncretic culture like the Hellenistic one, the age in which the work was probably born. The research then took place in the direction of an analysis of elements, structures and details of the world of Near-Eastern mythological narrative that could have influenced the plot of Nino's novel. In particular, the attention has turned to stories and myths of Sumerian and Assyrian-Babylonian culture and the possibilities of comparison were remarkable. Enlil and Ninlil and Enlil and Sud, datable to the end of the III and the beginning of II millennium BC, are the Sumerian myths in which the almost precise correspondences have been found. The quantity and the quality of the similarities between these myths and our text pushes more to consider the work, object of research, an erudite revisitation of myths of the Ancient Near East. The analysis has turned to look for connections between the environment created around the Hellenistic kings of the dynasty of Seleucids, which at the time were the rulers of that geographical area, and the ancient myths that constituted the local cultural substratum. Even here the connections were strong.

The work is divided into two parts: the first one concerns the formation of the biblical text and proposes a new critical analysis of the passage through the confrontation between MT, LXX, Vg and other sources. This comparison examines the relationships between the MT and the Hebrew model of the LXX as well as the differences between the different recensions of the LXX; furthermore, the study of the lexicon and the themes present therein leads to the formulation of a new hypothesis on the time of composition and the historical and literary contextualization of the episode within the biblical corpus. The second part focuses on the history of the interpretations of the passage in the Latin and Greek world from the 1st century AD to the beginning of the 5th century, and has led to the constitution of a dossier of passages, examined in their context, which comment on or mention the episode. The attention given to the context has made it possible to resolve certain problems that have hitherto prevented the reconstruction of the exegetical path of the passage (attribution of certain catenary fragments, dating of Ambrose’s De virginitate, etc.). This new research approach combines a complete analysis of the biblical episode with a thorough study of its exegesis. It thus reveals, on the one hand, the choices made during the composition of a sacred, though problematic text and, on the other hand, the different mechanisms employed by the exegetes to explain the meaning of a story in which the goodness of God, who tolerated the human sacrifice, is questioned.

In the critical approach to Herodotus’ Histories the Homeric poems represent an important reference point; indeed Homeric influences are recognizable in the narrative techniques as well as in the thematic and lexical choices of the Histories. The work focuses on a specific aspect of the ‘Homeric heritage’ in Herodotean work, and it’s based on a ‘functional’ approach. Some Homeric elements, which depend on the oral cognitive and communicative system, typical of epos, are also in Herodotus and their presence could clarify some aspects of the way in which the Histories were composed and published. In the Histories there are recurring elements that recall the structure of typical scenes. Herodotus, therefore, adapts some elements of the epic tradition to the new context of prose historiography and uses the same mechanism of composition to create new recurring motifs that become typical in the Histories. These mechanisms of composition are related to the oral composition and publication of epic poetry: their presence in the Histories can mean a close relationship between Herodotean historiography and orality, especially about the publication of Herodotus' work. And, if we acknowledge that Herodotean historiography is connected to the oral communication system, we can also better understand the function of Herodotean speeches. The speeches of the Histories, like the Homeric ones, are not a rhetorical and literary exercise, but explain, motivate and generate the events narrated. This functionality of speeches reflects an oral culture, in which the spoken word has the same, and sometimes even greater, importance than the action. In conclusion, the comparison with the Homeric model highlights the ‘traces’ of an orality, which has strongly influenced the techniques of composition of the Histories and which could be ascribable to a context of oral publication, through performance, of the Herodotean work.

This thesis aims at investigating, through two case studies, the reception of ancient myths, characters and themes into the Seventeenth- and Eighteenth-century musical theatre. During these two centuries, looking back to antiquity was a characteristic feature of the operatic genre, whose birth itself was inspired by the models of Greek tragedy and Aristotelian theory. Indeed, late Renaissance Italian scholars who created the first operas tried to resort to both ancient Greek music theory and performative aspects of ancient Greek drama, theorized above all in Aristotle’s Poetics: the result was a wholly new dramatic form. After a preliminary chapter discussing how both ancient and modern scholars have studied the relationship between the classical world and the Opera, the following chapters, which are the main body of this thesis, take into account the reception of two characters, Alcestis and Herakles. My analysis explores their reception, respectively, from antiquity to the operatic stage, thus dwelling on the Renaissance, as it was a pivotal period for the rediscovery of the ancient sources. Although the present dissertation is conceived both as a philological and musicological study, emphasis is placed on librettos and librettists rather than on the music. The aim is investigating which sources the Seventeenth- and Eighteenth-century librettos were based on – since during the Seventeenth century many librettists may have drawn inspiration from both Latin and Mythographic sources, not from a specific Greek drama – and how an ancient source had to been modified, also to comply with the musical theatre conventions. Moreover, it will be highlighted how an ancient drama could have been differently interpreted, depending on the cultural and historical background, especially when it had to be re-elaborated for a different dramatic genre as the operatic one.

The thesis is a partial review of the theory about the genesis of the Alexander Romance which was suggested by R. Merkelbach and which has become as the vulgata in the criticism. Merkelbach affirms that the author of the Romance was a 'naive' editor, who, at the end of the III century AD, would have assembled texts starting from two different sources: an Hellenistic historiographical work and a large collection of letters, as well as a real epistolary novel. This suggestion allows to explain some inconsistencies due to the mixture between the letters and the narrative sections; moreover, it seems to have been confirmed by the evidence provided by PSI 1285. However, the analysis of the letters shows interesting connections with the narrative perspectives of the Romance, so that it could invalidate the main point of the Merkelbach's theory, ie. the heterogeneity of the epistolary aspect in comparison with the narrative one. Then the survey underlines that the letters which are also transmitted by the papyrus can be a later addition to the text of the Romance. Indeed, the tradition of the Romance is very opened and contaminated: it is possible that the inconsistencies in the recensio vetusta are due to the process of transmission, and not to the inexperience of the editor. The suggestion made by A. Ausfeld and R. Stoneman about an Hellenistic origin of the Romance allows to explain the presence of narrative sections which appear to be 'allogenic' in the most ancient phase of the text. Indeed such suggestion provides a possibility to define the uncertain identity of the Romance, since there are evident traces of contiguity with the remain fragments of the historiography of the IV and III century BC. Also the use of the letters is compatible with the conventions of the historiographical genre.

The thesis consists in the description of the historical, literary, archaeological and digital background nec-essary to the creation of a digital atlas of ancient Greece based on the collection and analysis of the data and informations provided by Pausanias’Periegesis. Through the GIS softwares, and in particular ArcGIS online, it was possible to create a georeferred database embedded with all the text’s data and descrip-tions; every single identification of a historical site was confronted with the current state of the archaeo-logical research, in order to create an innovative tool aimed to both the historical and archaeological re-search and to the study and analysis of Pausanias’ text. More precisely, this work consisted in a first example of a digital atlas entirely based on the interpretation of a classical text through the georeferencing of its contents. Every location was associated to the relative description by Pausanias, by directly linking the archaeological informations and the literary source. In or-der to define an effective taxonomy for the analysis of the contents of the text, it was decided to associ-ate to each one of the elements described by Pausanias seven layers inside the map, each one describing general categories (towns, suburban sanctuaries, monuments, sacred groves, locations, hydrography and mountains). Every element was eventually embedded with data organized in a contents table, such as: source, identification, historical period and identification status.

The present research investigation concentrates on Xenophon's historiographical works, focusing in particular on those minor figures in them who display characteristics or behaviour that render them unworthy of the governing role they occupy. Critics have long focused on identifying and analysing those characters who represent the perfect model of leadership described by Xenophon and offered for imitation by his audience. However, very little has been said about the opposite figures, those paradigms and opposites, destined not so much to be imitated, but rather useful in representing the mistakes that a reader must avoid and to bring out even more the models of enlightened and capable leadership that are the real focus of Xenophon's attention in various works. If, in fact, the paideutic intention and characteristics of the Senofonte corpus is evident, intended to teach the qualities, political but even more so moral, necessary to hold a role of government and leadership; it would seem logical to assume that this didactic purpose of Xenophon's works can also be realised in the negative figures, whose role is emphasised and highlighted by the author through ever new literary strategies.
