The present investigation “Morphogenetic Characterization of Kinnow Mutants” was carried out at the Division of Fruits and Horticultural Technology, ICAR-IARI, New Delhi during 2016-2018. From the diverse mutated population of Kinnow mandarin, five-year-old putative mutants generated from various doses of gamma irradiation (15, 20, 25 and 30 Gy) and EMS (0.05%, 0.1%, 0.2% and 0.5%) were selected for the study and compared with the wild type (WT). The Kinnow mutants were characterized based on growth, yield, physiological, biochemical and fruit quality parameters over two successive years (at 5th and 6th year of tree age). They were further characterized using SSR markers. The mutants showed both stimulatory and inhibitory response with respect to various morpho-physiological and biochemical characteristics. Plant height and fruit yield were reduced by 49.65% and 65.91% in the mutant G-20 developed at 30 Gy. Compared to wild type (WT), leaf area was recorded maximum and minimum in the mutants G-6 and G-14 developed from 20 and 25 Gy. Photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll a and b were degraded maximum in mutant G-20 (30 Gy), while total phenol was stimulated in G-18-G-20 (30 Gray). Proline accumulation was higher in G-14 and G-15 and total soluble protein (TSP) in G-15 (25 Gy). Antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT and POX) and glutathione reductase (GR) were up-regulated maximum in the mutants generated from 30 Gy. Fruit weight, fruit size, PAL and PME activity were observed differently in mutants. The desired low seeded mutants G-6 and G-9 were obtained with an average of 7-8 seeds/fruit developed at 20 Gy as compared to 31 seeds/fruit in the wild type. The juice recovery per cent in these mutants had parallel values with the wild type. Furthermore, irradiation treatment enhanced IAA content by 188.78-247.23% in the mutants G-7- G-9, while 79.57-93.46% enhancement in ABA content was assayed in the mutants G-6 and G-7 developed at 20 Gy. Phenological traits in the EMS induced mutants similar to the gammairradiated mutants exhibited both stimulatory and inhibitory responses. Plant height in the mutants E-2 and E-5 (0.05% EMS) was stimulated by almost 10% while it was inhibited by 25% in the mutants E-16 and E-17 created from 0.5% EMS. The plant height although was inhibited in E-16, the fruiting intensity as compared to WT was higher in the said mutant by almost two-fold. Almost 50% reduction in fruit yield was noted in mutants E-6 and E-8 (0.1% EMS). Leaf area was more in the mutants E-1 and E-2 (0.05% EMS) and was reduced in the mutants beyond 0.2%. Chlorophyll pigments a and b were observed maximum in the mutants E-1 and E-14 developed from two contrasting dosed of 0.05 and 0.2% EMS. Chlorophyll a:b ratio was however, lowest in the mutant E-14 (0.2% EMS). Both stimulatory and inhibitory response was observed in the magnitude of transpiration rate, stomatal conductance and leaf intercellular CO2 in the mutants developed from higher doses of EMS. The Photosynthetic rate was minimum in E-13 developed from 0.2% EMS. A correlated dose-dependent increase of almost two-fold was recorded in the total phenol, proline and total protein content in the mutants created from 0.2 and 0.5% EMS. The variation in traits of interest such as reduced plant height, succulent leaves with high RWC, stomatal conductance and upregulated antioxidant enzyme activity was significantly higher in the mutant E-16 created from 0.5% EMS. The number of seeds < 15 seeds/fruit was indexed in the mutants E-16 and E-19. The phytohormones IAA and ABA were assayed maximum in the mutant E-18 (0.5% EMS). In an attempt to characterize the putative mutants developed through different doses of gamma rays and EMS, thirty-four SSR markers were screened for polymorphism among the Kinnow mutants of which only two were found informative. 12 alleles were detected among two SSRs with an average of 6 alleles at per locus and the highest number of alleles (7) was recorded in SSR locus AMB2. The average diversity indices of SSR viz., allele frequency, gene diversity, expected heterozygosity and PIC were 0.415, 0.672, 0.415 and 0.611 respectively. The N-J tree was constructed based on the two SSRs data which clustered into two major groups. Subsequently, clusters were simplified into six clades which distinguished gamma irradiation and EMS based mutants which were reconfirmed through PCoA. First three axes of PCoA contributed 80.88% of the cumulative variation. The molecular variance (AMOVA) explained 42 % variation among the populations, 48 and 10 % variation among within and among the individuals respectively. The findings of the present study revealed that gamma irradiation and EMS have the potential to generate much-needed variation in Kinnow mandarin with noble traits which can be utilized for the selection of desirable mutants or can be used in the future breeding programme.

An experiment was designed to determine the effectiveness of foliar prebloom boron (B) sprays for thinning 'Kinnow' mandarins (Citrus reticulata). Treatments consisted of a control and foliar B applied at 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 and 3000 ppm. Leaf tissue B levels were not significant between treatments. Likewise, fruit quality was similar for all treatments. Fruit weight and number were significantly greater for the control compared to the 1500, 2000, 2500 and 3000 ppm B treatments for the undersize fruit. There was a clear reduction in yield as the rate of B applied increased, however, the reduction was not statistically significant.

Present investigation was carried out to study the root morphology of one year old seedling and the influence of different rootstocks in pre-bearing Kinnow mandarin under field condition on plant morphological, physiological, tissue nutrients and biochemical parameters at the Division of Fruits and Horticultural Technology, I.A.R.I., New Delhi during 2014-15. Results of the findings revealed that the seedling rootstock of rough lemon had a better root morphology with respect to root length (1511.27cm), projected area (158.42cm2 ), surface area (482.00 cm2 ), root volume (12.24 cm3 ) and the number of forks (7026.80) with a comparatively inferior root morphology in Carrizo. Comparative performance of budded Kinnow on different rootstocks showed that trees on Jatti Khatti were superior in terms of stimulated increase in plant height (49.42%) and canopy volume (22.56%) during the period April-September, compared to minimum enhancement in Kinnow trees on Troyer citrange during the same period. Kinnow trees on different rootstocks maintained congenial relationship with the scion closest to 1.0. Leaf sclerophylly in terms of leaf area, fresh mass, dry matter and density of foliar tissue was higher in Jatti Khatti but leaves more succulent on rough lemon. Kinnow leaves on Karna Khatta and rough lemon maintained significantly higher relative water content (88.61%). However, chlorophyll fractions was higher in leaves on rough lemon with reduced chlorophyll fractions on Carrizo rootstock. Higher physiological activity in terms of photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, and internal CO2 was recorded in scion leaf of Kinnow on rough lemon during summer and during autumn and winter on Jatti Khatti and rough lemon. Leaf N and P content was higher in leaf tissue on sour orange while K, Ca and Mg content was higher in leaf tissue on rough lemon. Sodium accumulation in leaves was higher in Rangpur lime as compared to Troyer which accumulated minimum sodium. Leaf tissue of Sour orange excelled in micronutrients and maintained higher Fe, Zn, Mn and Cu in their leaves. Kinnow scions on rough lemon exhibited higher enzyme activities with respect to total soluble protein, 64 superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and glutathione reductase activity, while catalase activity was significantly higher on sour orange rootstock. Proline accumulation was also observed to be higher on sour orange rootstock. Scion leaf on Troyer rootstock accumulated 1.88 fold more phenol. Polyphenol oxidase activity was observed higher in scion leaves on Jatti Khatti with minimum activity on Troyer and Carrizo citrange rootstock. From the findings of this study, it is concluded that rough lemon rootstock imparted higher metabolic activity in Kinnow scion, while sour orange accumulated more nutrients in their tissue. Carrizo proved to be an inferior rootstock with most of the characters studied.

Up to now, analyses of shakuhachi koten honkyoku accentuated mainly the melodious component of musical structure. However, a no less important component of the musical structure of all Japanese traditional music is by all means also timbre (tone quality). In my research of the timbre of shakuhachi, I combined three major methodological approaches: Ethnomusicology, Music Theory and Music Acoustics. The ethnomusicological approach wascharacterised by close orientation on one interpretation tradition within the framework of the Kinko School, the Chikumeisha Goro Yamaguchi´s tradition. The positions of music theory appeared mainly as a result of deep structural analysis, which made it possible for detailed description of the musical structure oriented on the appearance of concrete playing techniques and their application to the individual phrases of each of the honkyoku compositions. Within the scope of musical acoustic approach, we jointly with colleagues from the HAMU sound studio did a series of spectral analyses of two matrices of shakuhachi basic tones and some playing techniques. The matrices were recorded by Vlastislav Matoušek and Christopher Yonhmei Blasdel. The spectral analyses fully confirmed the changes of timbre of the shakuhachi in Kinko honkyoku.

Darbe keliami uždaviniai: apibūdinti klišės koncepciją ir jos ypatumus bei išskirti klišių bendrąsias savybes; atskleisti klišės kilmės ir gyvavimo prielaidas bei jos ryšius su masine kultūra ir jos sritimis; atskirti kino bei filmo sąvokas ir jas apibrėžti; aptarti kino istoriją ir atskleisti kino komunikacijos raidą, nepamirštant televizijos žanro; paaiškinti kino filmų teorijas ir įvertinti komunikacijos teorijų ir modelių taikymo galimybes kinui; aptarti klišes, pasirodančias kino filmuose. Teoriniai tyrimų metodai, palyginimai ir šaltinių analizė leido darbe naujai apibrėžti darbo temos sąvokas, išskirti jų ypatumus, savybes, numatyti kilmės prielaidas. Darbe atskirai teoriškai nagrinėjamos ir tikslinamos darbo temos sąvokos – klišės, kinas ir jo komunikacija – vėliau ties kiekviena dalimi jungiant jas ir mėginant rasti tarpusavio sąsajas. The topic “Cliches in Movie Communication” is chosen because of an interesting, but little analysed theme of elements, that surrounds us everywhere and that we use in our daily actions, communications, we see it as fashion trends, we read it in novels, see in movies, hear in our headphones. These very common elements are called clichés. The objective of this paper is to describe and explore the clichés in general, to exclude main characteristics of these common elements and to look at the examples in the spheres of mass culture. In this paper mass culture is considered as an assumption for clichés ti raise and spread through the means of mass communication. The goal of ventilating this topic is also to overlook the nature of clichés in movie communication, review some examples, and understand the extent of prevalence of clichés in films, also to explore if they are useful or, conversely, not welcome into the movies and other spheres of mass culture by the creators and by audience. In order to describe clichés in such mean as movie, there were movies, films, cinema explored too. The history of film, film theories, and communication models applied to films led to the part where the clichés were described specifically in movie and in movie making processes. I Masteroppgaven ser vi på den subjektive kvaliteten til JPEG2000 og H.264. Vi ser på den subjektive kvaliteten i forbindelse med konverteringen fra en digital kino pakke (DCP) til video klar for kringkasting på HDTV. En subjektiv undersøkelse har blitt gjennomført, som prøver å gi svar på hva riktig kvalitet for HDTV er og hvordan JPEG2000 og H.264 står i forhold til hverandre med bittrate og kvalitet. I Masteroppgaven har vi sett videre på konverteringsprosessen fra en DCP til en H.264 kodet video for kringkasting på HDTV, og kommet frem til en mer automatisert metode med flere utbyggingsmuligheter. Fra den subjektive undersøkelsen kan man trekke ut følgende. * For middels og lave bittrater er H.264 overlegen i forhold til JPEG2000 for videoenkoding, med tanke på kvalitet. * H.264 kodet video for HDTV er av god kvalitet ved bittrater på 2Mbps.

Galima teigti, jog ilgą laiką filosofija kino atžvilgiu buvo nusiteikusi priešiškai. Filosofai bei menininkai abejojo kino priklausomybe meno sričiai, nes kinas, anot jų, neturi savitos ir unikalios kalbos, o režisieriai piktinosi, jog filosofai, interpretuodami tam tikrus filmus, jiems primeta savas teorijas, taip atimdami iš kinematografinio meno jo unikalumą. Šio darbo tikslas – pažvelgti į kinematografinį meną iš filosofinės perspektyvos, o, tiksliau, kokias prielaidas interpretuojant kiną gali pasiūlyti filosofija. Aptariant tokius konceptus kaip – laikas, trukmė, kinematografinis mechanizmas, vaizdas, vaizdinys-judėjimas, vaizdinys-laikas, momentinės nuotraukos, montažas ir kt. – nuo filosofinės disciplinos pereinama prie kinematografinio meno, bei bandoma įrodyti, jog kinas, bent jau kartais, turi nemažai bendro su filosfinėmis teorijomis. Kino kuriami vaizdiniai gali tapti iliustracijomis filosofijos kuriamų konceptų.
We can say, that for a very long time, philosophy was bad-minded in regard to cinema. Philosophers and artists had doubts about cinema‘s subordination to art, because, in their opinion, cinema doesn‘t have his own, unique language, and film directors were in anger, because philosophers, in their interpretations of certain films, tried to enforce their own theories to cinema, by taking away its unique being. The aim of this work - to look into cinematic art from philosophical perspective, more precise, what assumptions of cinema interpretation can offer philosophy. Discussing concepts like – time, duration, cinematic mechanism, image, image-movement, image-time, snapshot, montage – we move from philosophical discipline to cinematic art, by trying to prove, that cinema has something common with philosophical theories. Images composed by cinema, can become illustrations of philosophical concepts.

In the following Master’s degree research “Activity of a cinema to meet young people’ needs” the relevant problem of these days – strategic course of spreading cinematic activities - is being analysed. Only commercial films are demonstrated in the most cinemas of Lithuania. Educational programs for young people as well as projects would broaden the sphere of action of the cinema and would remarkably influence the youth culture. To achieve the aim it is important to conceptualize young people’ interests and needs. That is the ultimate cause to correct the activity of the cinema and to join the developing process of youth culture. That is why the cinema activity which meets youth needs is a pedagogical problem. Young people at the age of 16-30 like going to the cinema and to know their needs is very important, as the most popular forms of the Art let to develop youth needs to watch good films, and to express youth culture. The goal of the research: to evaluate the activity of the cinema, that would meet youth needs. For Sweden to achieve the environmental goal of a nontoxic environment, knowledge is required about harmful elements’ movement and mobility in nature. One of those elements is arsenic that for a long time has been known to cause health ailments. The most common and dangerous path into the human body is through drinking water. It is therefore of great importance to study sources that can impact and contribute to elevated concentrations of arsenic in the groundwater. One such path is the anthropogenic soil called rödfyr, which is what is left after the burning of black shale. This activity was common in areas rich in limestone, which after being heated can be used as cement in concrete. Heaps of rödfyr of varying sizes have been found at a number of localities in the area around Kinnekulle in Västergötland. Earlier studies of leach water indicate arsenic content high enough to be considered hazardous to health. At Kinne-Kleva south of Kinnekulle there is an unusually large heap of rödfyr, situated around land used for agricultural purposes as well as some houses. To have a good understanding about how rödfyr impacts the environment is key to predict and negate negative environmental consequences. The aim of this independent project is with fieldwork and leach tests study in which concentrations arsenic can be found in rödfyr at the Kinne-Kleva heap. Results show that high concentrations of arsenic exists, up to 137 mg/kg rödfyr. They also indicate that arsenic leakage occurs to a large extent, both in high and low pH environment. The amount of arsenic is however expected to be drastically reduced due to dilution, which increases with distance. Exposure is therefore confined to the close vicinity of the pile.
För att Sveriges miljömål om en giftfri miljö ska kunna uppnås krävs kunskap om skadliga ämnens rörelse och transport i naturen. Ett av de ämnena är arsenik, som sedan länge förknippats med nedsatt hälsa. Den vanligaste och farligaste vägen in i människokroppen är genom dricksvattnet. Därför är det av stor vikt att undersöka källor som kan påverka och tänkas bidra med förhöjda halter arsenik i grundvattnet..En sådan källa är den antropogena jordarten rödfyr, vilken är en restprodukt vid förbränningen av alunskiffer. Denna aktivitet var vanligt i områden rik på kalksten, som efter upphettning sedan kan nyttjas som cement i murbruk.I området kring Kinnekulle i Västergötland har rödfyr hittats på flera platser i varierande mängd. Tidigare undersökningar av lakvatten pekar på att halterna arsenik är så höga att långsiktigt intag kan anses hälsovådligt. I Kinne-Kleva söder om Kinnekulle finns en ovanligt stor rödfyrshög, belägen i ett område med åkermark och även några bostadshus. Att ha en god uppfattning om hur rödfyr påverkar sin omgivningen är av ytterst vikt för att förutsäga och hindra negativ miljöpåverkan.Syftet med detta kandidatarbete är att med platsbesök och laktester undersöka i vilka halter arsenik kan förekomma i lakvattnet vid rödfyrslokalen i Kinne-Kleva.Resultatet visar att rödfyren innehåller höga halter arsenik, uppemot 137 mg/kg. De visar också att läckage av arsenik förekommer i stor utsträckning, både under höga och låga pH. Halterna arsenik som lakas ut väntas dock minska kraftigt med avståndet från högen till följd av utspädning. Den främsta exponering föreligger således i högens närområde.

Kino filmų jis nepasirenka kaip savo konceptų iliustracijų, o juos vertina kaip tuos pačius konceptus, išreikštus vaizdine forma. Pagrindinis šio magistrinio darbo tikslas – aptarti bet-kurios-erdvės, kuri priklauso vaizdinio-judėjimo kinui ir išreiškia netiesioginį laiką, ir vaizdo-kristalo, išreikšiantį sudėtingą tiesioginio laiko sistemą, konceptus ir tirti jų apraiškas kino mene.
Gilles Deleuze creates concepts characteristic of cinema which deepen the problematics of cinema providing a philosophical basis to it. In his books of movement-image and time-image – Cinema 1 and Cinema 2 – Deleuze applies concepts to classical and modern cinema. He doesn‘t choose movies as illustrations of his concepts but values them as the same concepts expressed in visual form. The main aim of this master thesis – to discuss the concepts of any-space-whatever, which belongs to the cinema of movement-image and expresses indirect time, as well as of crystal-image, which expresses a complex system of direct time, and to investigate their manifestations in the art of cinema.

Norint išsiaiškinti politikos įgyvendinimo nesėkmę lemiančius faktorius, remiamasi V. Nakrošiaus bei R. Vilpišausko iškirtais sėkmingą politikos įgyvendinimą įtakojančiais veiksniais ir siekiama išanalizuoti kino politikos įgyvendinimo procesą. Master Thesis „The implementation of culture policy in Lithuania: cinema’s case study“. Paper analyzes the implementation of culture policy and the case of cinema in particular. The object of this research is the implementation of cinema policy in the period of years 2002-2009. Despite the fact that cinema policy is constantly reforming, particular factors lead to inadequacy between purposes and results, which don’t show expected effects, this means that implementation of policy is unsuccessful. According to successful factors of implementation which were suggested by V. Nakrošius and R. Vilpišauskas, this work analyzes the process of cinema policy implementation. The main steps are: the analysis of law base; forming of analytical scheme; analysis of cinema case. Mit dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges und mit der Proklamierung der DDR im Jahre 1949 wurde ein neues Kapitel in der Geschichte der deutsch-polnischen Beziehungen eröffnet. Die DDR und die Volksrepublik Polen wurden der Regierung der Sowjetunion unterstellt und als „Brüderländer“ aufgefordert, gegenseitige Kontakte in verschiedenen Bereichen zu pflegen. Eines von diesen Gebieten war auch das kulturelle Leben, von dem ein bedeutender Teil der Filmaustausch war. In den Jahren 1949-1990 wurden im Lichtspielwesen der DDR über 300 Spielfilme aus der Volksrepublik Polen verliehen, was zweifelsohne eine imposante Anzahl war. Die große Mehrheit dieser Filme wurde in der DDR-Presse rezensiert. 40 Jahre lang waren die Kritiken in Bezug auf das Filmangebot aus der Volksrepublik Polen im Lichtspielwesen der DDR ein fester Bestandteil der DDR-Alltags- und Kinopresse. Es sind innerhalb von dieser Zeit tausende von Rezensionen zu polnischen Filmen geschrieben worden, von deren ein großer Teil in dieser Arbeit analysiert wurde. Die Analyse der Pressebeiträge stellt ein Bild der Beurteilungen der polnischen Produktionen durch die DDR-Journalisten dar, lässt aber auch ganz genau Änderungen in den Beziehungen zwischen der Volksrepublik Polen und der DDR in den Jahren 1949-1989 erkennen. Dadurch bildet die politische Situation in den beiden Nachbarländern den Hintergrund dieser Arbeit, wobei fünf wichtige geschichtliche Phasen ausgewählt werden, die die Kapitel der Arbeit bilden. Zwei Unterkapitel dieser Arbeit werden der Rezeption der Filme von zwei bedeutendsten polnischen Regisseuren der Nachkriegszeit gewidmet: Andrzej Wajda und Krzysztof Zanussi.
With the end of the Second World War, and the formation of the DDR in 1949, a new chapter in the history of German-Polish relations began. The DDR and the People''s Republic of Poland were placed under the control of the Soviet Union, and as “brother lands” were encouraged to foster a mutual contact and exchange in various areas. One such area of exchange was in cultural life, of which a significant part was the sharing of films from both countries. In the years 1949-1990 over 300 Polish films were distributed in East German cinemas, an indisputably significant figure. The great majority of these films were reviewed in the DDR press, and in fact reviews of the cinematic offerings from the People''s Republic of Poland formed a regular component of East German newspapers during this period of 40 years. Over this time, thousands of reviews of Polish films were written, a large number of which are analysed in this dissertation. The analysis of press articles forms a picture of how Polish film productions were regarded by DDR journalists, but also reveals the changing relationship between the two countries in the period from 1949 to 1989. Thus the political situation in these neighbouring countries forms the background of this dissertation, with each chapter discussing one of five important historical phases. Two sub-chapters of this dissertation are devoted to a discussion of the East German reception of the films of Andrzej Wajda and Krzysztof Zanussi – two of Poland''s most important post-war directors.

Avhandlingens siktemål er å undersøke fremveksten av kinoen som institusjon i Norge med hovedvekt på årene 1910 og 1925. Undersøkelsen gjøres i tre geografiske områder: Oslo; samt to kommuner i Hedmark: Hamar og Elverum. Det legges spesiell vekt på tre områder knyttet til kinoinstitusjonen i disse tidsrommene: 1) eierskap og drift, 2) visningspraksiser og programpolitikk, samt 3) utviklingen av kinolokalene. Områdene ses i lys av samtidige kulturelle og politiske strømninger. Studien er plassert innenfor en nyere internasjonal filmhistorisk retning der filmen som tekst forskyves til fordel for empiriske studier av kontekstuelle praksiser og geografisk avgrensede lokale sammenhenger. Det tas utgangspunkt i eksiterende norsk filmhistorisk forskning som ses opp mot ny empiri og lokale variasjoner i praksis. Avhandlingen finner at det private kinoeierskapet i 1910 var organisert etter moderne forretningsprinsipper hvor aksjeselskapsformen var en forutsetning for kapitaltilgang, investeringslyst og utvikling av bransjen som raskt etablerte kinokjeder gjennom akkvisisjoner og allianser. Aksjonærene kom fra øvre samfunnslag og besto hovedsakelig av konsuler, redere, godseiere og grosserere. Dette bryter radikalt med tidligere filmhistoriske fremstillinger av det private kinoeierskapet i Norge. Kinolokalenes beskaffenhet var viktige elementer i kinoenes markedsføring, og utgjorde det største investeringsobjektet for eierne. Utviklingen av kinolokalene skjer uten tydelige arkitektoniske forbilder. I de spesialoppførte kinobyggene fra 1910-tallet lånes elementer fra etablerte bygningstyper og det eksperimenteres med ulike løsninger, for eksempel med store rundbuevinduer i kinosalen, samt ulike løsninger på og fasiliteter i vestibylearealet. Kinofasadene var harmoniske og rolige, dekorert med søyler og pilastre. Fasadebelysning var sjelden brukt. Også dette bryter med tidligere framstillinger av de tidlige kinoene som er hevdet å ha hatt et markskrikersk preg. I stedet konkluderer avhandlingen med at kinobyggene kan karakteriseres som dannelsespalasser, med et sobert uttrykk som ikke ønsker tiltrekke seg overdreven oppmerksomhet, men imponere gjennom å betone en slags klassisk opphøyd ro. Undersøkelsen av repertoar og visningspraksis viser store forskjeller mellom de ulike kinoene. I 1910 synes det å være et sammenfall mellom kinoer som ble regnet som ”fine” og kinoer med en høyere andel aktualitetsfilmer. Fiksjonaliserte melodrama med lengre spilletid entret også programmene høsten 1910. Det knyttes forbindelseslinjer mellom moraloffensiven mot filmen og den økende fiksjonaliseringen i mediet. I 1925 finner undersøkelsen ingen sammenfall mellom lokale variasjoner i repertoarpolitikk og kommunalt versus privat eierskap. Avhandlingen viser hvordan kinobransjen i stumfilmperioden utvikles i et stadig spenn mellom en populær folkelig attraksjonskultur og den borgerlige dannelseskulturen. Den borgerlige dannelseskulturen preger de største kinoaktørenes virksomhet i utformingen av kinolokalene og i de forretningsmessige prinsippene og organiseringen av den daglige driften. Samtidig er perioden preget av at arbeiderbevegelsen vinner terreng, og borgerskapets verdier og interesser sto i skarp motsetning til arbeiderkulturens oppbygging av en egen motoffentlighet. Kommunaliseringen av kinoene i perioden fra 1914 til 1925 må i første rekke ses i lys av dette, og ikke gjennom bransjeinterne forhold.
This dissertation examines the emergence of the cinema as an institution in Norway, with particular emphasis on the years 1910 and 1925. The study is located in three geographical areas: Oslo, and two municipalities in Hedmark: Hamar and Elverum. Its main focus is three central perspectives related to the cinema as an institution in this period: 1) ownership, 2) programming and viewing practices, and 3) the development of the cinema theater. These perspectives are considered in the light of contemporary cultural and political trends. The point of departure is existing research on Norwegian film history, and will be re-evaluated in light of new empirical findings. The dissertation finds that the private cinema ownership in 1910 was organized according to modern business corporate principles, which was a prerequisite for access to capital, investments and the development of the industry. Cinema chains were quickly established through acquisitions and alliances. Shareholders came from the upper strata of society and consisted mainly of wealthy consuls, shipping magnates, landowners and businessmen. These findings signify a radical break with previous film historical accounts of the ownership structure in Norway. The cinema theater was essential in the marketing of this new form of entertainment, and the buildings were the largest investment for the owners. The development of the cinema theater occurs without apparent architectural prototypes. Cinema buildings from the 1910s borrowed elements from established building types and experimented with different interior and exterior architectural solutions. The facades were harmonious and calm, decorated with columns and pilasters, and facade lighting was rarely used. This breaks with previous conceptions of the early cinema buildings’ façade, which is claimed to have had a visually noisy marketing practice. The study of repertoire and viewing practices finds major differences between the cinemas. In 1910, cinemas with a high proportion of actuality films were usually considered to be more upscale. In 1925, the study finds no correlation between variations in the repertoire policy, and municipal versus private ownership. This dissertation shows how the cinema industry in the silent period oscillated between a popular culture of attractions and bourgeois culture. The bourgeois culture characterizes the largest cinema operators&apos; activities in the design of cinema theaters, their business strategy and in organization of daily operations. At the same time, the period is marked by the rise of the labor movement, and bourgeois values ​​and interests stood in sharp contrast to the labor movement building its own public sphere. The municipal acquisition of Norwegian cinemas in the period from 1914 to 1925 must primarily be understood within this context, and not through internal conditions within the cinema business.

Santrauka Nuo 1990 metų prasidėjo kino teatro lankomumo atgimimas, užbaigęs ankstesnį tris dešimtmečius trukusį kino teatro lankomumo mažėjimą. Naujieji amerikietiško tipo kino teatrai – multipleksai – turintys 8 ir daugiau kino sales bei rodantys įspūdingus, finansiniu požiūriu itin sėkmingus filmus, sugrąžino auditoriją į kino teatrus. Bet jau 2001 metais pagal kino teatrų skaičių Europos Sąjungos 15 šalių kino rinka, charakterizuojama kaip galutinai įsotinta ir kurios neįmanoma plėsti vien tik plečiant kino teatrų tinklą. Didžiausias kino teatro lankomumo augimo potencialas stebimas Europos Sąjungos naujosiose šalyse, kur į kino rinkas iki šiol investuota santykinai mažai. Čia palyginus mažas kino ekranų skaičius, tenkantis šalies gyventojams bei mažas kasmetinis apsilankymų skaičius, tenkantis vienam gyventojui. Darbe nustatomos priežastys, sukėlusios kino teatro lankomumo svyravimus, iš kurių pagrindine laikoma – multipleksų plėtra. Darbe teigiama, kad šalyse, kuriose mažiausiai išvystyti multipleksai, yra mažiausias kino teatrų lankomumas. Šis darbas, vertinant jo praktinę reikšmę, turėtų būti aktualus vystantiems kino verslą ir visiems besidomintiems kinu, kino istorija, kino teatrų auditorijos pasikeitimu, multipleksų atsiradimu ir jų įtaka formuojant vartojimo įpročius.
FLUCTUATIONS IN CINEMA ATTENDANCE (EU, 1990 – 2007) Summary Since 1990 cinema attendance began to revive after having declined over a 30-year period. The arrival of American-style multiplexes – new cinemas with eight or more screens demonstrating blockbuster films – had successfully attracted audiences back to the cinema. Since 2001 in terms of the number of cinemas, EU 15 countries cinema market was already described as fundamentally saturated and can no longer be expanded by building new cinemas. The greatest potential lies with new EU countries that untill now have seen less intensive investment. Here cinema markets have low screen densities, which are currently accompanied by low admission – per capita ratios. This paper examines the reasons of fluctuations in cinema attendance and considers the impact of the multiplex development. In terms of practical meaning, this paper should be relevant to cinema business developers and all others being intersted in cinema, cinema history, changes in cinema audiences, rise of multiplex and its impact on consumer habbits.

The thesis revolves around the history of the cinema in three towns divided by the Polish-German border, namely Frankfurt/Oder-Słubice, Guben-Gubin, and Görlitz-Zgorzelec between 1945 and 1989. Drawing on this local perspective, it examines the cultural politics and relations between the two socialist republics: the Polish People`s Republic and the German Democratic Republic. The introduction gives the outline of the political, social and cultural characteristics of the towns newly divided by the 1945 border. It also analyses the general role of cinema in leisure activities, how the movies were advertised, as well as ways of movie distribution and cinema management in both countries. The first chapter broadly describes the development of cinema culture after 1945, amid the rubbleof the citiesdestroyed during the last months of the WWII. It touches upon the reconstruction of the city centres and the role of the Soviet authorities in the reorganization of the lands which were to form the Soviet Occupation Zone in Germany and the Western Territories of Poland. The new policy included the expropriation of the former cinema owners and nationalization of the whole of cinematography in the second half of the 1940s. The second chapter explores the diversity of the architectural forms of the cinemas and draws attention to the variety of venues where movie shows were organized, especially at the peak of the popularity of movie theatres (in the 1950s) and during their competition with a new medium at the dawning of the television era. The case studies focus on the imposing architecture of the socialist realism, movie theatres installed in community centres, recurrent renovations and technical improvements of the existing infrastructure. In the final passages the attention is given to special forms of movie theatres, such as open-air-and army cinemas as well as cinema-cafes. The third chapter explores the local dimension of propaganda in the cinema by looking at the ways in which the guidelines from the central agenda were applied to the local context. Movie theatres were decorated, special shows, exhibitions and events organized to celebrate public holidays and birthday anniversaries of Soviet leaders. The cinema managers would invest considerable effort and resourcefulness to ensure strong public attendance at movie theatres. They collaborated with many local institutions, such as schools and state companies. A range of people were engaged in the production of phony data concerning the reception of the Soviet films and measuring the impact of the ‘brotherly nation’s’ ideology on the Polish and East German audiences. The fourth chapter runs through the period of an open border between the two socialist states, i.e. between 1972 and 1980. It analyses both the official collaboration and individual contacts across the border (East Germans’ visits to the Polish cinemas) changing perspective from the very local –towns,to the broader one –voivodeships. The last chapter describes the waning of the cinema in the 1980s. First of all, this period witnessed the desperate attempts aiming at keeping the attendance records high. Secondly, the plans were made to find new ways to fill the movie theatres, all of which were ended by the political events at the turn of the 1980s. In addition, the chapter analyses the cinema buildings as a part of the German, European and socialist heritage which is juxtaposed with the present attitudes of the local population to those edifices. Finally, the chapter ponders the fate and future of the abandoned cinema buildings in the context of the new role of non governmental initiatives, which aim at re-animating the cinema culture on the Oder–Neisse. The thesis is based on archival research exploring mostly local and regional resources; on the analysis of the local press, leaflets and adverts, interviews with experts and contemporaries as well as on the personal examination of the places which have once been a part of cinema history.
