Ensiled king grass (Cenchrus purpureus (Schumach.) Morrone) is commonly used as feed in tropical ruminant production. However, ruminant performance can be limited by low nitrogen (N) content in tropical grass silage. A mixed feed of legume–king grass silage may be an option to improve ruminant production. We investigated the effects of feeding an ensiled mixture of king grass forage and foliage of a browse tree legume, either leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit) or gliricidia (Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Walp), on dry matter (DM) intake, DM digestibility, organic matter (OM) digestibility and N balance of Pelibuey sheep. Twelve male lambs 9–11 months old were blocked by initial bodyweight (33 ± 3 kg, mean ± s.d.) into three groups of four lambs and randomly assigned to one of three feed treatments: king grass silage (KS); mixed king grass and leucaena silage (KLS); and mixed king grass and gliricidia silage (KGS). Results showed that DM and OM were similar among silages. The N content was higher (P < 0.001) in KLS and KGS than in KS. DM intake and DM digestibility were higher (P < 0.001) in KLS and KGS than in KS. OM digestibility was higher (P < 0.001) in KLS than in KS. Nitrogen intake, faecal N, urine volume, urinary N, digested N, N digestibility, N retention and retained N:N intake ratio from KLS and KGS treatments were higher (P < 0.05) than from KS. A lower (P < 0.01) urinary N:N intake ratio was detected from KGS and KLS than from KS. This study demonstrated that, compared with silage made from king grass alone, legume–king grass silage mixtures can improve intake and nutrient digestibility in Pelibuey lambs. Further, N retention can be enhanced when legume–king grass silages are used as feed compared with king grass silage alone.

Estudos sobre aspectos silviculturais de espécies florestais nativas da Amazônia são escassos, principalmente aqueles que visam a identificar técnicas de cultivo para a produção de mudas. O trabalho foi realizado objetivando avaliar efeitos de doses crescentes de N no desenvolvimento de mudas de mogno. O estudo consistiu de sete tratamentos, correspondentes à doses crescentes e equivalentes a 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 e 120 g N ton-1 de substrato, utilizando-se uréia como fonte de N. Os tratamentos foram distribuídos em delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, com oito repetições. Noventa dias após a repicagem foram avaliadas as seguintes características: altura de planta, diâmetro do caule, matéria seca das raízes, do caule, das folhas e total. Também se avaliou o conteúdo de N, P, K, Ca e Mg nas folhas. Os resultados mostraram que a dose de máxima eficiência física correspondeu a 61,5 g N ton-1 de substrato; o nível crítico de N para a parte aérea é de 27 g kg-1 e a dose para atingí-lo de 57,5 g N ton-1 de substrato. Observou-se também que na dose de 120 g N ton-1 houve efeito negativo da adubação nitrogenada sobre as características de crescimento avaliadas. Estes resultados indicam que as características de desenvolvimento e de acumulação de nutrientes pelas mudas de mogno foram influenciadas positivamente por doses crescentes de N, contudo na dose máxima utilizada neste estudo 120 g N ton-1, houve efeito negativo; a adubação nitrogenada resultou em aumento no conteúdo de N, P e Ca nas folhas; a dose de N recomendada para a produção de mudas de mogno, em substratos com características semelhantes ao empregado neste estudo, é de 57,5 g N ton-1 de substrato.

To evaluate blood N(2) uptake and the role of the respiratory volume (air sacs/lungs) as a N(2) and O(2) reservoir in deep-diving penguins, diving respiratory volume (Vdr), heart rate (fh), venous P(N)(sum), blood volume (V(b)) and hemoglobin (Hb) concentration were measured in king penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) during forced submersions and compressions equivalent to depths up to 136 m. Vdr was 69+/−18 ml kg(−)(1) (mean +/− s.d.) in 62 submersions ranging from 4.4 atmospheres absolute (ATA; 1 ATA=101 kPa) (34 m) to 14.6 ATA (136 m). Submersion fh averaged 30+/−7 beats min(−)(1) (N=18), approximately 20 % of pre- and post-submersion values. Venous P(N)(sum) values during and after submersions as deep as 11.2 ATA (102 m) were all less than 2.8 atmospheres N(2) (283 kPa) above ambient pressure, a previously measured threshold for symptomatic bubble formation. Mean V(b) was 83+/−8 ml kg(−)(1) (N=6); [Hb] was 17.6+/−0.7 g dl(−)(1) (N=7). On a mass-specific basis, mean Vdr, and therefore total available N(2), is 41 % of that in shallow-diving penguin species. Total body O(2) stores, calculated from measured Vdr, V(b), [Hb], muscle mass and myoglobin concentration, are 45 ml kg(−)(1), with 23 % in the respiratory system. This small respiratory fraction in comparison with that in shallow-diving penguins suggests a lesser reliance on the respiratory oxygen store for extended breath-holding and also a reduced uptake of nitrogen at depth.

AbstractThis paper presents horizontal and seasonal differences in the concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in the surface waters of Admiralty Bay. The average annual concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorus were found to be 1.054 and 0.129 mg dm-3 respectively. Organic nitrogen constituted 59% of total nitrogen on average, while N-NO3- was substantially higher than N-NH4+ (0.362 and 0.062 mgN dm-3, respectively). Organic phosphorus constituted 34% of total phosphorus on average, and the mean annual concentration of reactive phosphorus was 0.085 mgP dm-3. The observed concentrations of N and P were higher in the nearshore area and lower in the central part of the Admiralty Bay basin. In explaining this account was taken of surface runoff into the bay, the decay of marine macroalgae in the tidal area and the excretion of N and P by marine animals. The concentrations of total nitrogen and total phosphorus in freshwater streams varied from 0.528–5.698 mgN dm-3 and from 0.088–1.709 mgP dm-3. In laboratory experiments, 24-hour loads of total nitrogen and total phosphorus released from the remains of macroalgae into the waters of the bay were estimated at about 6.2 tN and 10.3 tP, while the approximate quantities excreted by macrozoobenthos were 482 kgN and 48 kgP. The availability of N-NH4+ was seen to be greater in the waters of the bay than has been reported for open water in this part of the ocean and water from the Bransfield Strait had a diluting effect on the concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in the bay. The role of the wind in carrying mineral salts from waters of the Bay to the inland environment was also discussed.

ABSTRACTThis study presents changes in the concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in two streams in Western Antarctica (Admiralty Bay, King George Island, South Shetlands) that differ in trophic status. The results suggest a decline in concentrations of the determined forms of N and P between 2001 and 2005. The decrease ranged from 9.3% for reactive phosphorus to 73.2% for ammonium-nitrogen. Such inferred declines in N and P concentrations are considered to reflect reduced deposition on land of organic matter brought in from the seas by the penguins nesting in the area. The ultimate cause of this is in turn the steady decline in abundance that is being noted for these penguins.

AbstractObjective:To compare the sugar content of items at four multinational fast-food chains, across three countries.Design:Total sugar (g)/per serving was extracted from online nutrition information, and sugar/100 g serving was calculated. Foods were categorised as: breakfast sandwiches, burgers, sandwiches, desserts and condiments. Beverages were categorised as fountain, frozen or pre-packaged. Sugar (g) was compared across countries using linear mixed-effects models. Pairwise comparisons were performed with Tukey–Kramer adjustments.Setting:USA, Germany and Australia.Participants:Burger King™ (Hungry Jack’s™), Kentucky Fried Chicken™, McDonald’s™ and Subway™.Results:Differences in total sugar/100 g or ml were observed across countries for burgers (n 104), desserts (n 110), sandwiches (n 178), pre-packaged beverages (n 36) and frozen beverages (n 72). Comparing identical items across countries (e.g. BigMacTM from McDonalds in USA, Germany and Australia), burgers (n 10 available in all three countries) had lower sugar content in Australia (3·4 g/100 g) compared with the USA (4·7 g/100 g, P = 0·02) or Germany (4·6 g/100 g, P = 0·04), yet no differences were observed in other food categories. Comparing the same beverages across countries (e.g. chocolate shake from Burger King), frozen beverages (n 4 available in all three countries) had lower sugar content in Australia (14·2 g/100 ml), compared with the USA (20·3 g/100 ml, P = 0·0005) or Germany (17·8 g/100 ml, P = 0·0148), yet no differences were observed in other beverage categories.Conclusions:Heterogeneity in fast-food sugar content across countries suggests that reductions are possible and should be implemented to reduce health risks associated with excess added sugar intake.

Objetivos: Determinar la extracción de macronutrientes así como el efecto de los niveles de fertilización en el pimiento páprika cv. Papri King en Barranca, Perú. Metodología: Se empleó el diseño experimental de bloques completos al azar, con cuatro tratamientos y cuatro bloques, los tratamientos fueron cuatro niveles de fertilización (kg ha-1 de NPK): 0-0-0, 200-100-200, 250-150-250, 300-200-300. Se evaluó el rendimiento de frutos frescos, la acumulación periódica de la materia seca y la extracción de nutrientes. Se realizaron cuatro muestreos a los 42, 77, 112, 147 días después del trasplante, recolectando muestras de hojas, tallos y frutos. Resultados: La acumulación de materia seca total fue de manera creciente a medida que la planta aumentaba su crecimiento y el desarrollo de órganos, siendo el tallo el que alcanzó la máxima acumulación. La mayor extracción de nutrientes se dio con el T4 (300-200-300) continuando en forma decreciente con los demás tratamientos. Todos los nutrientes considerados se extrajeron en cantidades significativas desde el inicio del ciclo de la planta, siendo a partir de los 112 días después del trasplante los elementos N, K y P, los que mostraron su máxima extracción, mientras que a los 147 días después del trasplante los elementos Ca, S y Mg presentaron mayor extracción. Asimismo, el T4 tuvo mayor rendimiento de frutos con respecto a los demás tratamientos. Conclusiones: La extracción de los macroelementos considerados para producir una tonelada de fruto fresco fueron: 11,31; 1,26; 15,06; 8,71; 2,30; 2,72 kg ha-1 de N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, respectivamente, según la respuesta obtenida con el nivel de fertilización 300-200-300.

Abstract Purpose To examine the effects of premorbid migraine history on baseline Vestibular/Ocular Motor Screening (VOMS) and King-Devick (KD) test performance in youth athletes. Methods This study implemented a cross-sectional design and was conducted at a series of youth sport venues in a designated research area. Youth athletes between the ages of 8 and 14 years with a diagnosed history of migraine headaches (n=28) and match controls (n=28) were administered a baseline VOMS and KD test. Between-group comparisons for provocation scores on the VOMS (smooth pursuit, saccades, convergence, vestibular-ocular reflex [VOR], and visual motion sensitivity [VMS]), Near-point of convergence [NPC] average distance (cm), and KD time (seconds) were conducted. Results Individuals diagnosed with migraine headaches reported greater VOMS scores compared to match controls on smooth pursuit (0.43±1.1 vs. 0.00±0.0; p=.02), convergence (0.46±1.2 vs. 0.04±0.1; p=.04), horizontal VOR (0.89±1.4 vs. 0.07±0.2; p<.001), vertical VOR (0.61±1.1 vs. 0.11±0.3; p=.04), and VMS (0.86±1.5 vs. 0.04±0.1; p=.01). Differences were also observed on the KD test with worse times in the diagnosed migraine group (54.33±11.8s) compared to match controls (47.17±8.9s; p=.02). No differences were reported on NPC distance between the migraine (2.22±3.1cm) and control group (0.83±1.2; p=.06). Conclusion Youth athletes with diagnosed migraine history reported higher baseline VOMS scores and worse KD time compared to match controls, further illustrating the influence of premorbid migraine headaches as a risk factor for elevated baseline concussion assessment. Special consideration may be warranted for post-concussion assessment in athletes with diagnosed migraine headaches.

Congestive heart failure (CHF) has been associated with depleted myocardial coenzyme Q10 (Q10) concentrations in human patients. The aim of this study was to investigate associations between myocardial Q10 concentrations and myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) severity in dogs. Furthermore, citrate synthase (CS) activity was analysed to determine if a reduction in myocardial Q10 was associated with mitochondrial depletion in the myocardium. Thirty Cavalier King Charles spaniels (CKCS) in MMVD stages B1 (n = 11), B2 (n = 5) and C (n = 14) according to the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) guidelines and 10 control (CON) dogs of other breeds were included. Myocardial Q10 concentration was analysed in left ventricular tissue samples using HPLC-ECD. CKCS with congestive heart failure (CHF; group C) had significantly reduced Q10 concentrations (median, 1.54 µg/mg; IQR, 1.36–1.94), compared to B1 (2.76 µg/mg; 2.10–4.81, p < 0.0018), B2 (3.85 µg/mg; 3.13–4.46, p < 0.0054) and CON dogs (2.8 µg/mg; 1.64–4.88, p < 0.0089). CS activity was comparable between disease groups. In conclusion, dogs with CHF due to MMVD had reduced myocardial Q10 concentrations. Studies evaluating antioxidant defense mechanisms as a therapeutic target for treatment of CHF in dogs are warranted.

A necessidade de desenvolver pesquisas referentes aos requerimentos nutricionais das espécies florestais, principalmente as essências florestais nativas da Amazônia, como o mogno, é inadiável, visto que as constantes explorações de espécies de alto valor econômico são cada vez maiores. Com o objetivo de avaliar o crescimento e o requerimento nutricional de mudas de mogno, foi realizado um experimento em casa de vegetação com 14 tratamentos. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos casualisados, com 5 repetições. As características de crescimento avaliadas foram: altura da parte aérea, diâmetro de colo, matéria seca da parte aérea, da raiz e total, relação raiz e parte aérea e conteúdo de nutrientes da matéria seca da parte aérea. Os resultados obtidos permitem concluir que: é necessária a correção conjunta da acidez e da fertilidade do solo para solos ácidos e de baixa fertilidade natural, mesmo que o teor de matéria orgânica seja considerado alto; dos nutrientes, P é o que mais limita o desenvolvimento da planta, bem como a absorção dos outros nutrientes; não há necessidade de adição de K para o desenvolvimento das plantas quando se realiza calagem; na ausência de calagem a adição de K deve ser recomendada e o requerimento nutricional do mogno em macronutrientes obedece à ordem decrescente de: P>S>K>N.

El presente proyecto se desarrolló en la Estación Experimental Tropical Pichilingue del Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Agropecuarias (INIAP) y en el Laboratorio de Análisis Bromatológico de la Universidad UTE. Se evaluó el efecto de la fertilización nitrogenada con urea (0, 25, 50 y 75 kg de N ha-1) sobre la degradabilidad (biodisponibilidad) ruminal in situ (DIS) de los macrominerales (Ca, P y Mg) del pasto King Grass cosechado a los 40 días de rebrote. Para el análisis estadístico se empleó un diseño de bloques completos al azar, donde los criterios de bloqueo fue el animal donde se realizó la incubación ruminal, respectivamente. Los niveles de fertilización nitrogenada provocaron cambios en la biodisponibilidad ruminal (degradación) de Ca, P y Mg del pasto Pennisetum purpureum en las diferentes horas de incubación, acción que en la mayoría de los casos afectó la cinética de degradación del pasto en sus diferentes fracciones (Fracción soluble (A), Fracción insoluble pero potencialmente degradable (B), Fracción indegradable (c). La etiqueta borgoñona, implantada en España desde 1548, era inflexible y opresiva, pero conocida y respetada por toda la corte. Fijaba el ceremonial de todos los actos para cada persona incluido el monarca. Todos los derechos y privilegios estaban regulados y los principales beneficiarios eran los grandes. La etiqueta les aseguraba no solo la proximidad con el monarca, de la que se derivan innumerables beneficios y honores, sino también un papel político muy importante. Se puede decir que eran los dueños de la corte, y a diferencia de la francesa, la corte española se presentaba como una oligarquía de grandes (Bottineau, p.132).Con la llegada de la dinastía borbón a España la etiqueta borgoñona no desapareció, pero se produjeron transformaciones muy importantes mediante pequeñas pero continuas disposiciones de clara influencia francesa en los distintos reglamentos que se dictaron y en los ceremoniales que se establecieron al gusto de la corte de Versalles.Felipe V llegó al trono español bajo la tutela de su abuelo, el Rey Sol. Luis XIV consideraba que la decadencia de la monarquía española y la falta de autoridad del rey eran consecuencia de la etiqueta borgoñona, que propiciaba una excesiva invisibilidad que aislaba al monarca y le sometía a un encierro, vigilado por los grandes que aumentaba su poder sobre él. Consideraba que la única manera de restablecer la autoridad del rey era la reforma de la etiqueta.Pero la grandeza española se resistió a estos cambios. Opuso una tenaz lucha contra las reformas de Felipe V, dispuesta a no ceder sin resistencia ni uno solo de sus privilegios cerca de la persona del rey (Gómez-Centurión, 1996, p.988).________________________The Burgundian label, implanted in Spain since 1548, was inflexible and oppressive, but known and respected by the entire court. It fixed the ceremonial of all the acts for each person including the monarch. All rights and privileges were regulated and the main beneficiaries were the great ones. National-cultural and religious disappearance of the Christian countries of the Caucasus (Albania, Iberia, Armenia) from the V century was threatened by Persia. "Kartlis Tskhovreba" (History of Georgia) tells in detail about these acute and dramatic historical events. Historical writings from a later period show one feature of this region. The references to Rani (Aran) as Persia ("Mirian... called from Persia his relative, a descendant of kings, named Peroz") and the inhabitants of this country as Persians ("in Ran, wherever the Persians fought") should not be taken literally. In Georgian historical works, the terms "Persia" and" Persian " in addition to Persia and Persians also meant countries and peoples of the Near and Middle East-Arabs, Turks, and others: "Sultan Arfasaran came out, king of P e R s I I" (Leonti Mroveli, Life of kings); "P e R s I d s K I e s u l t a n s, far and near" ("Chronicle of the times of lash Giorgi", life of king Giorgi); "the Georgians entered the castle, and there was a strong battle, and p e R s s B a g d a d a were defeated" (Chronicle of the century). This situation is due to the fact that the entire territory to the East of the Caucasus for centuries belonged to and was ruled by the Persian Empire of the Achaemenid, Arshakid and Sasanian eras (much later the Arab Caliphate and then the Turkish Sultanate appeared on the historical scene). In Georgian historical texts, in particular in the chronicle "Life of the kings" by Leonti Mroveli, a logical geographical description is given about this – "Persians from the East of the sun". According to Georgian historical data, these peoples also include Albanians who lived to the East of the Georgians. One of the most notable historical events is an extensive episode of romantic love in the life of an Albanian Princess, the daughter of the ruler of Rani (Aran) Barzaboda and a thorough historical account of the dramatic state activities of the Queen of Kartli (Iberia), mother of the great Georgian king Vakhtang Gorgasal-S a g d u x t.

At long last, after 31 years, the first book by noted British zoologist and cryptozoologist Karl Shuker has been expanded and updated. Mystery Cats of the World first appeared in 1989 and was the only book to review feline cryptids worldwide. In this 2020 edition, Shuker repeats this admirable achievement and, in the process, gives us a solid overview of current knowledge of felid evolution, taxonomy, and genetic variation. In fact, the only feline mystery cat he does not describe is Hello Kitty. Shuker has more than kept up with cryptozoology over the years, keeping the public informed with numerous popular books on dragons, new and rediscovered animals, the Loch Ness monster, and many other lesser-known cryptids. His ShukerNature blog and his regular “Alien Zoo” column in Fortean Times provide an always-fascinating glimpse into ongoing cryptozoological controversies. Scientific names and genetic relationships are updated throughout the text in this new edition. He notes that since 1989, our understanding of genes that cause variations in felid coat color has become more complicated. For example, the chinchilla mutation in tyrosinase was then considered responsible for “partial albino” tigers (white tigers with black stripes). In 2020, a point mutation in a transporter protein that prevents the manufacture of pheomelanin (red and yellow pigments) is seen as a more likely cause. Rather than go into great detail about these ongoing discoveries, Shuker sensibly opts to include the bare minimum of updated felid genetics in his discussions of specific cryptids. However, for clarity and comparison he provides a table from the first edition that describes the six major genes and their mutant alleles that in the 1970s were thought by UK geneticist Roy Robinson to be responsible for major cat color morphs. (Believe me, this chart comes in handy throughout the book.)

Purpose Since the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), the incidence of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) among AIDS patients has declined both nationwide and in King County, Washington. We sought to compare clinical parameters of patients diagnosed with KS in the pre-HAART (1990 to 1996) and HAART (1997 to 2002) eras. Methods We used patient data abstracted from the Adult/Adolescent Spectrum of HIV-Related Diseases study of Public Health—Seattle and King County. Results Patients diagnosed with KS in the HAART era (n = 40) were significantly more likely (P < .05) than pre–HAART-era KS patients (n = 366) to be diagnosed with alcohol problems (43% v 18%), noninjection drug use (45% v 18%), injection drug use (25% v 10%), psychosis (25% v 13%), and hypertension (13% v 2%). Although median CD4+ count and HIV-1 viral load at the time of KS diagnosis were not significantly different between the two groups, significantly fewer (P < .01) HAART-era KS patients developed opportunistic illnesses (OIs) during their follow-up. The risk of dying among KS patients diagnosed in the HAART era is significantly lower (P < .01) than for KS patients diagnosed in the pre-HAART era (hazard ratio, 0.24). Conclusion Although HAART-era KS patients in King County were as likely to have a depleted CD4+ cell count and high HIV-1 viral loads at the time of KS diagnosis as pre-HAART KS patients, they survived longer and fewer of them were diagnosed with other OIs. They also had an increased prevalence of substance abuse and mental illness, contributing to a dynamic and changing KS clinical profile.

This article puts under scrutiny one of the episodes of the activities of the Russian general Petr Nikolaevich Krasnov (1869-1947). His personality still evokes contradictory evaluations even nowadays. Being Monarchist, in 1922 Krasnov puts into words the aim of his life in the future in the following way: to make it happen, that in his historical homeland once again a “Sovereign Crowned Ruler” appears, able to pacify the people and to put the things into order. To reach this goal, Krasnov supposed to use the resources of the White Emigration, among other those on the territory of Yugoslavia. In summer 1930, Krasnov wrote a letter to the King of Yugoslavia Aleksandar, which he saw as the main candidate to “save” the Orthodox Russia. In the Archive of Yugoslavia the original of this document is kept. This publication represents its full text. In his epistle, Krasnov represents himself as a pronounced Russian patriot. The image of King Aleksandar for him is a reincarnation of the Russian Emperor Nicolas II who died from the hand of the Bolsheviks. Krasnov thought it was high time the Yugoslav sovereign, a Slav by origin, had paid the “debt” off, that his country had before the Russians who fought for Serbia in 1876-1878 and 1914-1917. On the basis of the materials available at the Archive of Yugoslavia, the reaction of Aleksandar to this letter by Krasnov remains unknown.

Objectives Eye tracking has been gaining increasing attention as a possible assessment and monitoring tool for concussion. The King-Devick test (K-DT) was expanded to include an infrared video-oculography-based eye tracker (K-D ET). Therefore, the aim was to provide evidence on the reliability of the K-D ET system under an exercise condition. Methods Participants (N = 61; 26 male, 35 female; age range 19-25) were allocated to an exercise or sedentary group. Both groups completed a baseline K-D ET measurement and then either two 10-min exercise or sedentary interventions with repeated K-D ET measurements between interventions. Results The test-retest reliability of the K-D ET ranged from good to excellent for the different variables measured. The mean ± SD of the differences for the total number of saccades was 1.04 ± 4.01 and there was an observable difference (p = 0.005) in the trial number. There were no observable differences for the intervention (p = 0.768), gender (p = 0.121) and trial (p = 0.777) for average saccade’s velocity. The mean ± SD of the difference of the total fixations before and after intervention across both trials was 1.04 ± 3.63 and there was an observable difference in the trial number (p = 0.025). The mean ± SD of the differences for the Inter-Saccadic Interval and the fixation polyarea before and after intervention across both trials were 1.86 ± 22.99 msec and 0.51 ± 59.11 mm2 and no observable differences for the intervention, gender and trial. Conclusion The results provide evidence on the reliability of the K-D ET, and the eye-tracking components and demonstrate the relationship between completion time and other variables of the K-D ET system. This is vital as the use of the K-DT may be increasing and the combination of the K-DT and eye tracking as one single package highlights the need to specifically measure the reliability of this combined unit.

O plantio de espécies florestais nativas é uma atividade que além de repor os recursos florestais também pode atenuar os impactos ambientais decorrentes do extrativismo. Entretanto, seu sucesso depende, entre outros fatores, do conhecimento a cerca das necessidades nutricionais da espécie a ser utilizada. Com o objetivo de obter informações das necessidades de mudas de mogno (Swietenia Macrophilla King) por micronutrientes, foi realizado um experimento em casa de vegetação. Foi utilizado como substrato um Latossolo Amarelo de baixa fertilidade, coletado da camada de 20-40 cm de profundidade, localizado no setor Sul do Campus da Universidade Federal do Amazonas (UFAM). Foram testados sete tratamentos e quatro repetições dispostos em delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, sob a técnica do elemento faltante. Os tratamentos foram: Completo (Calagem + N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn e Mo), Testemunha (Calagem + N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S e Mo) e a omissão de um micronutriente catiônico por vez (-B, -Cu, -Fe, -Mn e - Zn). Após quatro meses foram avaliadas as seguintes características: altura da parte aérea, diâmetro do colo, produção de matéria seca da parte aérea e das raízes e conteúdo de nutrientes na matéria seca da parte aérea. Os resultados obtidos nesta pesquisa permitiram concluir que as mudas de mogno tiveram seu crescimento comprometido pela baixa disponibilidade de cobre no substrato, sendo necessária sua aplicação para que as plantas tenham um desenvolvimento normal, compatível com o crescimento da espécie, quando as condições de substrato são adequadas.

The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate the frequency of breast cancer-related lymphedema at King Abdulaziz University Hospital and factors associated with it. Eighty-four breast cancer-related lymphedema patients were recruited from Plastic and Reconstruction Surgery Unit, King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia after breast cancer treatment during the period from 2008 till 2015. According to the circumference difference between healthy and affected arm, lymphedema degree was categorized into mild (> 5-10%), moderate (> 10-15%) and severe (> 15%). From a total of 598 patients who underwent breast cancer resection, 84 (14.05%) patients developed breast cancer-related lymphedema. In out of the 84 patients who developed arm lymphedema, the treatment was mostly modified radical mastectomy and radiotherapy (n = 59, 70.24%); followed by lumpectomy plus axillary lymph node dissection and radiotherapy (n = 18, 21.43%), simple mastectomy (n = 5, 5.95%) and lumpectomy with sentinel lymph node dissection and radiotherapy (n = 2, 2.38%) with statistical significant difference between them (P = 0.0001). The frequency of lymphedema in our institution is 14.05%. It is mostly moderate, appears during the 1st year after surgery in patients who underwent modified radical mastectomy and radiotherapy, aged more than 60 years and obese.

Background: Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) is characterized by recurrent variants that have implications in diagnosis, prognosis and management. We analyzed all variants that were detected in our patients since the inauguration of our Next-Generation-Sequencing (NGS) facility. Methods: This is a retrospective study that analyzed all variants that were reported at our institution from Jan 2018 to Dec 2019 in patients with de-novo AML. NGS was performed using illumina miseq platform utilizing an amplicon panel that includes 50 genes known to be altered in AML. Variant Call Format (VCF) files were analyzed in a weekly meeting. For the purpose of this study, all VCFs were concatenated into a single MAF file. The Bioconductor package maftools was utilized to analyze this MAF file. Results: 78 patients (24 children, 48 males, median-age=31 yrs) were studied. 193 variants were detected in 63 samples (81% of patients). The median number of variants-per-sample were 2 (range, 1 to 6). Most commonly mutated genes wereTET2(26%),NPM1(21%), FLT3(17%), DNMT3A(15%),NRAS(13%)CBLC, CEBPA, KIT(8%). The most commonly found nucleotide alteration was C&gt;T transition which represented 50% of all mutations. Enrichment analysis showed the following significant associations (p&lt;0.05):FLT3rearrangement associated withNPM1andDNMT3Aalterations, andRUNX1T1/RUNX1rearrangement associated withKITalterations. Utilizing the drug gene interaction database, 72 mutations were categorized as druggable, the most frequently listed categories were clinically actionable variants (N=17), kinase-dependent (N=8) and druggable genome (N=7). Using log-rank test,NRASandDNMT3Avariants were found to be associated with significantly worse EFS (p=0.017 and 0.038, respectively), whileNRASvariants were associated with significantly worse OS (p=0.015). The pediatric age group had some noticeable difference; NPM1andTET2were significantly more altered in adults whileKITwas significantly more altered in children. Finally, we compared our results to The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) de-novo AML data for 192 patients that was published previously. The TCGA raw data is available publicly and were used run through our pipeline for comparison. A striking similarity in the frequency of alterations (81% vs. 82%) and the top mostly altered genes. The following genes were significantly more altered in our cohort:TET2,GATA2, andCSF3R;whileIDH2was more altered in the TCGA cohort. Interestingly,CBLC(n=7) andZRSR2(n=5) variants were identified in KHCC patients but none in the TCGA cohort. Conclusion: We reported variants in 81% of our patients. Prognosis is significantly altered in patients withDNMT3AandNRASvariants. A wealth of actionable mutations were detected. Our results carry many similarities to the TCGA cohort, but significant difference in alterations involving 6 genes were reported. Background: Disabilities are a major issue, affecting 15% of the world’s population. They are mostly caused by NI such as GDD, CP, hydrocephalus, and HIE. Patients of such conditions, especially children, are more likely to require admission and healthcare. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the causes that may lead these children to have multiple admissions Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted by reviewing medical records of patients who were admitted to the pediatric ward of King Khalid National Guard Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from 2013-2017 with any underlying NI. These impairments included any previous diagnosis of GD, CP, HIE, encephalitis, hydrocephalus, or corpus callosum agenesis. A non-probability convenience sampling technique was used to recruit patients who were under 15 years of age with the mentioned diagnoses, and all of the identified 265 patients were included in this study. Results: Analysis of a total of 635 admissions reports that the most common causes of admission in of patients with the mentioned included underlying conditions are other neurological conditions with (n=222, 35%) admissions, mainly due to seizures (n= 64, 10%), hydrocephalus (n=39, 6.1%), and delayed milestones (n=29, 4.6%). The second top category was respiratory conditions and infections (n=164, 25%). Aspiration pneumonia was documented (n=66, 10.4%), making it the top diagnosis in all admission, followed by seizures. The second top documented infection was pneumonia (n=40, 6.3%). The third top category was gastrointestinal infections and conditions. Leading that category is gastroenteritis (n=22, 3.4%) and GER (n=15, 2.4%). There was no There was a statistically significant relationship between NI and the gender of patients (p = 0.170). There was, however, a statistically significant relationship with the age group, feeding rout, home oxygen, documented disability, admission cause, and patient management (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Specific NI are more associated with certain conditions that are more likely to lead to hospitalization. Recognition of these conditions can be of future help in early detection and prevention of serious complications and morbidity.

We analyzed the nutritional composition and isotope ratios (C and N) of big-leaf mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) leaves in plantations established on contrasting soils and climates in Central America (State of Quintana Roo, Yucatán, México) and South America (State of Pará, Brazil). The objective was to determine the adaptability of this species to large differences in nutrient availability and rainfall regimes. Nutrient concentrations of leaves and soils were determined spectrophotometrically, and isotope ratios were measured using mass spectrometric techniques.In Pará soils were sandier, and acidic, receiving above 2000 mm of rain, whereas in Quintana Roo soils were predominantly clayey, with neutral to alkaline pH due to the underlying calcareous substrate, with about 1300 mm of rain. Leaf area/weight ratio was similar for both sites, but leaves from Quintana Roo were significantly smaller. Average N and K concentrations of adult leaves were similar, whereas Ca concentration was only slightly lower in Pará in spite of large differences in Ca availability. Leaves from this site had slightly higher P and lower Al concentrations. Differences in water use efficiency as measured by the natural abundance of 13C were negligible, the main effect of lower rainfall in Quintana Roo seemed to be a reduction in leaf area. The N isotope signature (δ15N) was more positive in Pará than in Quintana Roo, suggesting higher denitrification rates in the former. Results reveal a calciotrophic behavior and a remarkable capacity of mahogany to compensate for large differences in soil texture and nutrient availability.

Context Comprehensive assessments are recommended to evaluate sport-related concussion (SRC). The degree to which the King-Devick (KD) test adds novel information to an SRC evaluation is unknown. Objective To describe relationships at baseline among the KD and other SRC assessments and explore whether the KD provides unique information to a multimodal baseline concussion assessment. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Five National Collegiate Athletic Association institutions participating in the Concussion Assessment, Research and Education (CARE) Consortium. Patients or Other Participants National Collegiate Athletic Association student-athletes (N = 2258, age = 20 ± 1.5 years, 53.0% male, 68.9% white) in 11 men's and 13 women's sports. Main Outcome Measure(s) Participants completed baseline assessments on the KD and (1) the Symptom Inventory of the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool–3rd edition, (2) the Brief Symptom Inventory-18, (3) the Balance Error Scoring System, (4) the Standardized Assessment of Concussion (SAC), (5) the Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) test battery, and (6) the Vestibular/Ocular Motor Screening tool during their first year in CARE. Correlation coefficients between the KD and the 6 other concussion assessments in isolation were determined. Assessments with ρ magnitude &gt;0.1 were included in a multivariate linear regression analysis to evaluate their relative association with the KD. Results Scores for SAC concentration, ImPACT visual motor speed, and ImPACT reaction time were correlated with the KD (ρ = −0.216, −0.276, and 0.164, respectively) and were thus included in the regression model, which explained 16.8% of the variance in baseline KD time (P &lt; .001, Cohen f2 = 0.20). Better SAC concentration score (β = −.174, P &lt; .001), ImPACT visual motor speed (β = −.205, P &lt; .001), and ImPACT reaction time (β = .056, P = .020) were associated with faster baseline KD performance, but the effect sizes were small. Conclusions Better performance on cognitive measures involving concentration, visual motor speed, and reaction time was weakly associated with better baseline KD performance. Symptoms, psychological distress, balance, and vestibular-oculomotor provocation were unrelated to KD performance at baseline. The findings indicate limited overlap at baseline among the CARE SRC assessments and the KD.

A produção de mudas é uma das fases mais importantes do cultivo de espécies arbóreas, sendo essa fase fundamental para o desenvolvimento adequado dessas espécies. O estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o crescimento e a absorção de nutrientes em mudas de mogno sob o efeito de doses crescentes de corretivo. O experimento foi conduzido no período de setembro de 2002 a agosto de 2003. Os tratamentos foram doses crescentes de uma mistura de carbonato de cálcio e carbonato de magnésio p.a., na proporção de 4:1, em doses equivalentes a 0; 0,5; 1,0; 2,0; 2,5; 3,0 e 5,0 t/ha. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos ao acaso, com cinco repetições, num total de 35 parcelas, cada formada por 3 plantas. O substrato foi adubado com doses equivalentes a 200-500-300 kg.ha-1 de N, P2O5 e K2O, respectivamente e 15 kg.ha-1 de micronutrientes FTE-Br12. As características de crescimento avaliadas foram: altura, diâmetro do colo, matéria seca da parte aérea, raiz e total, relação parte aérea/raiz. Determinaram-se os teores de nutrientes da parte aérea, raiz e total, e em função desta última, estimaram-se os conteúdos. As médias foram comparadas pelo teste de Tukey a 5% de probabilidade. A calagem afetou todas as características de crescimento, exceto a altura. O requerimento nutricional obedeceu à ordem decrescente de K>N>Ca>Mg>P>Fe>Mn>Zn>Cu. A dose de 0,5 t/ha mostrou-se mais vantajosa economicamente e pode ser recomendada quando se utiliza subsolo ácido e de baixa fertilidade natural como substrato.

Context The King-Devick (KD) test is a rapid number-reading test that has emerging use in the assessment of sport-related concussion (SRC). Previous research suggested that healthy individuals and patients with acute concussions who had shorter recovery times (&lt;3 weeks) demonstrated a learning effect on the KD test after mild to moderate exertion, whereas patients with longer recovery times did not. Objective To assess if the absence of postexertional improvement on the KD test within 10 days of concussive head injury was associated with a longer duration of recovery. Design Prospective cohort study. Setting University concussion-management clinics. Patients or Other Participants Male and female adolescent athletes (n = 99, aged 13–18 years) presenting within 10 days of SRC. Main Outcome Measure(s) The KD test was administered before and after the Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test (BCTT). Days from injury to recovery, with recovery defined as being asymptomatic, confirmed by the assessment of a physician who was blinded to the treatment group, and the return of normal exercise tolerance on the BCTT were recorded. Results Participants with postexertional slowing (PES group, n = 33) had a longer duration of recovery (17 days versus 13.5 days, P = .033) than participants without PES (no-PES group, n = 66). At any clinic visit, PES was also associated with a relative risk of 2.36 (95% confidence interval = 1.55, 3.61; P &lt; .001) of not recovering within the following week. Conclusions The current study validates our prior work showing that acutely concussed adolescents who did not display the typical learning effect on the KD test after the BCTT took longer to recover from SRC than those who exhibited the typical learning effect.

Wood pieces of a heavy hardwood Neobalanocarpus heimii (King) P. S. Ashton and a light hardwood Shorea macroptera Dyer were used in decomposition experiments with termite-exclusion and control trays on the forest floor of the Pasoh Forest Reserve, West Malaysia to determine effects of wood quality on termite-mediated wood decay. Shorea macroptera had a significant loss of C in the presence of termites while Neobalanocarpus heimii showed no significant termite effect. Neobalanocarpus heimii and S. macroptera both accumulated N in the absence of termites, but S. macroptera lost it when termites were present. The C/N ratio decreased with and without termites as decay proceeded in both species. Neobalanocarpus heimii accumulated P, but S. macroptera lost it with and without termites. The C/P ratio decreased in N. heimii, but did not change in S. macroptera. Decomposition was considerably enhanced by termites in S. macroptera, but not in N. heimii, indicating that termite foraging activity was affected by the different wood qualities of the two trees. The qualities responsible for the differences and how different wood qualities affect nutrient cycling in the tropical rain forest ecosystem are discussed.

The effect of different amounts (0, 75, 150 and 225 kg/ha) and timings of split application of N on yield and nutrient uptake of 3 hybrid cultivars grown for bulbs was investigated. Efficiency of N-uptake was determined by soil and plant analysis with field experiments in 1983, 1984 and 1985. Leaching of fertilizers applied before planting induced low nutrient efficiencies in sandy soils. Dividing the total N-dressings into 4 monthly applications from Mar. to June or Apr. to July led to a higher N-efficiency, though fertilizers were easily leached with high rainfall. A total of 150 kg N/ha appeared to be adequate. Concentrations of plant nutrients (P, K, Ca, Mg and Na) in mature plants of cultivars Aristo, Connecticut King and Enchantment are presented in relation to bulb yield and N-uptake. Elephant grass has high biomass production, with qualities suitable for conversion into bioenergy, but has long been used exclusively for animal feed and only in recent years has it become an energetic alternative. Therefore, it is necessary to select genotypes with potential for energy production. This study evaluated the effect of five harvest times (8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 weeks) on the yield and chemical composition related to biomass quality through combined polynomial regression analyses of the following elephant grass genotypes: Cubano Pinda, Mercker 86-México, Pusa Napier n°1, Mole de Volta Grande, P-241-Piracicaba, and King Grass. A completely randomized design with three replicates, in a split-plot arrangement, was adopted, including two factors (plots = genotypes, subplots = harvest times). The evaluated variables were whole-plant dry matter yield, in t ha-1 (DMY), percentage of neutral detergent fiber (%NDF), and percentage of acid detergent fiber (%ADF). The elephant-grass genotypes Cubano de Pinda, Mercker 86-México, and P-241-Piracicaba showed a linear first-degree effect as a function of the harvest intervals, indicating that they did not reach their maximum production potential. Genotypes Pusa Napier n°1, Mole de Volta Grande, and King Grass, in turn, had a linear second-degree effect. For the NDF variable, all genotypes showed a significant linear second-degree effect as a function of the harvest intervals, except P-241-Piracicaba, for which no regression was observed. For this genotype, there was a significant linear first-degree effect on the %ADF variable.

ABSTRACT Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of dental interns at King Saud University College of Dentistry (KSUCD) regarding denture adhesives (DAs). Materials and Methods: Surveys were distributed to dental interns at KSUCD (n = 100). Cross-tabulations with the Pearson's Chi-square test were used to compare variables using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (P ≤ 0.05). Results: Approximately, 85.5% of the respondents had learned about DAs as part of their undergraduate curriculum, 71% agree that DAs can be a beneficial adjunct in the fabrication of dentures, and 87% agree that dentists should routinely inform all denture patients of the proper use and misuse of DAs. Conclusion: Most of the participants have adequate knowledge and attitude toward DAs.

Throughout this journey of excellence, King Saud University has adapted the quality system implementation in 2007.This study aims at presenting the opinions and suggestions of faculty members regarding quality implementation mechanisms in the departments of Faculty of Arts at King Saud University. To achieve the goals of the current study, the researchers depend on a questionnaire, which was constructed by both of them to collect data. This tool was constructed based on the standards steps of constructing a questionnaire. The tool has included several focus points which are: social and academic characteristics of the study community that consists of faculty members (n=273), strategies (vision, mission, and goals) which include 8 statements, evaluation which includes 14 statements, and finally communication and engagement which include 5 statements. In light of the results of this study the researchers recommend considering the goals of Quality Units in the departments of Faculty of Arts so that they agree and serve the goals of the development process and the quality in the college and the university, in addition to introducing a clear and announced plan of quality to all employees in the department. In addition, they suggest that Quality Units in the departments of Faculty of Arts should hold training workshops and courses to clarify quality requirements and ensures that they are understood by the employees. </p>

ABSTRACT In forest ecosystems, numerous species of insectivorous birds use certain tree species as feeding and nesting substrates. Between 2009 and 2010, the use of different floristic components as feeding substrate by the Pygarrhichas albogularis King, 1831 was evaluated in a southern Chilean secondary native forest. From a total of 13 trees and bush species, six tree species were used by P. albogularis as a feeding substrate. Tree use was limited to intermediate heights (11-20 m) and, mainly, to the trunk (40% of observations) and secondary branches (26%). Pygarrhichas albogularis showed a disproportionated use of N. dombeyi and an important use of trees with a greater age structure (DBH 81-100 cm). Nothofagus dombeyi presented a significantly greater tree bark crevice depth than E. cordifolia. In turn, covariance between crevice depth and invertebrate supply in tree bark was positive and significant. We consider bark depth and invertebrate supply to be the proximate causes explaining P. albogularis disproportionated use of Nothofagus dombeyi.

Background: One of common causes of abdominal pain that needs an urgent medical intervention is Acute Appendicitis (AA), Perforated appendicitis that result of hyperbilirubinemia, and relation with age. Methods: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study that will be performed in King Abdulaziz Specialist Hospital, Taif city in Saudi Arabia on the period from January 2018 to January 2020. Sample size of 197 is determined by World Health Organization (WHO) sample size calculator. Oral consent is taken from those patients. We include patients based on their age and gender. That is, we include ages from 10 years old to 60 years old. We also select both genders, male and female. Those patients may be presented with typical or atypical features of appendicitis. Result: Out of 197 participants 49.7% (n=98) were male and 50.3% (n=99) were female. 21.8% (n=43) aged less than 20 years, 54.3% (n=107) aged from 20 to 40 years and 23.9% (n=47) aged more than 40 years. About 31% (n=61) had perforated appendix. a significant relationship between perforated appendix and age was found (p-value= 0.012), in addition to bilirubin level (p-value= 0.001) respectively. Conclusion: Our local community. The majority of perforated appendix cases we found to be association with increase hyperbilirubinemia

The fish component of the diet of nonbreeding male Antarctic fur seals, Arctocephalus gazella, was analyzed from 70 scats collected at Stranger Point, King George Island, South Shetland Islands, during the austral spring (n = 36) and summer (n = 34) of 1993-1994. Fish occurred in approximately 70% of scats that contained food remains irrespective of season. In spring, the main fish prey were Electrona antarctica, Pleuragramma antarcticum, and Notolepis coatsi, which together gave two-thirds of the 110 otoliths recovered. In summer, 457 otoliths were retrieved; the most frequent and abundant species were Gymnoscopelus nicholsi, E. antarctica, and P. antarcticum, which represented over 80% of the otoliths recovered. A substantial increase in the amount of fish ingested by fur seals occurred from spring to summer concomitant with a change in the relative proportion of fish taxa. Most fish species identified are pelagic and feed on krill. During the study period, commercial fishing in the area was not based upon any of the fish species identified.

Background: King-Devick (KD) testing has been a reliable clinical tool used to identify changes in rapid eye movements between fixation points (saccades) after concussion. Other clinical tools such as oculomotor tracking (OMT) devices have been used to assess the extent of visual dysfunction in concussion patients to aid diagnosis, subtyping, and symptom management. Purpose: To compare trends in OMT saccadic motion analysis data to KD times/performance in concussed patients. Methods: Retrospective study of 66 pediatric patients (ages 12 to 21) with concussion. KD testing was conducted using standard 3 card protocol with a series of numbers which the patient reads aloud in a specific pattern as fast and accurately as possible without head movement. The length of time to complete each card was noted and the three KD times were averaged, resulting in one mean KD value for each patient. Patients were categorized into either a “Fast” (average KD time from 0 - 20 seconds), n=56, or “Slow” group (average KD time above 20 seconds), n=10. Each patient underwent testing with an OMT device during the same visit (250 Hz video-eye tracker), which measured vertical and horizontal saccadic latencies. Statistical analysis using a paired two sample t-test assuming equal variances compared the OMT data between the slow and fast groups. Exclusion criteria included history of visual disorders, learning disorders, seizure disorder, or intracranial hemorrhage. Results: The slow KD group had an average vertical saccadic latency of 248.88 ms and a horizontal saccadic latency of 214.66 ms (Table 1). The fast KD group had an average vertical saccadic latency of 217 ms and a horizontal saccadic latency of 196.64 ms. A t-test of vertical latency showed a statistically significant difference between slow and fast groups (p value = 0.002). A T-test of horizontal latency resulted in a p value = 0.069, which may support a statistically significant difference with a larger sample size. Conclusion: A potential relationship between patients with slower KD test times and slower horizontal/ vertical saccadic latencies on OMT saccadic analysis may be present. However, these trends will need more testing under larger sample sizes in order to make definitive conclusions. [Table: see text]

Since its introduction to the Barents Sea from the North Pacific in the 1960s, the red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus) has become invasive. The crab represents an important source of income, but also a potential threat to the highly productive fisheries in the region through its ecosystem impacts. A literature review was conducted, identifying factors contributing to the success of the crab as well as its interactions with native biota. Characteristics of the Barents Sea and the crab itself that may explain its success include suitable habitat for settlement and growth of the larvae; the wide range of habitats occupied throughout its life history, high mobility, generalist prey choice, low fishing pressure during establishment, and the lack of parasites. Being a large, bottom-feeding omnivore of great mobility, the king crab can significantly impact the ecosystem. Reduced benthic diversity and biomass have been registered in invaded areas. Important prey items include large epibenthic organisms whose structures also represent important habitat. Impacts on commercial and non-commercial fish species, through egg predation or indirect interactions, are difficult to detect and predict.

The clinical profile of patients with peripartum cardiomyopathy (PP-CMO) seen in the patient population in Durban, South Africa, is documented. Parameters such as age, multiparity, time of presentation and the role of hypertension in PP-CMO were evaluated. The study comprised 97 patients seen over a 4 year period. Group 1 ( n = 63), had a good outcome at follow-up and group II ( n = 34), had an adverse outcome, namely: persistently severe symptoms New York Hospital Association, Class III/IV; major thromboembolic complications; or a fatal outcome. These results confirm that PP-CMO is more likely to occur in the older and multiparous female. Increasing age and multiparity did not adversely affect outcome. Eighteen per cent of the study group were primiparous, and a third of these had an adverse outcome. Late presentation of symptoms (after 1 month postpartum) tended to favour an adverse outcome ( P = 0.06). Fifteen of the 19 patients with complete obstetric records had antenatal hypertension: in nine blood pressure levels were ≥ 160/110 mmHg. We were unable to ascertain the prognostic value of hypertension in PP-CMO. In conclusion, this study showed a high incidence of PP-CMO in the local African population (1: 1000 deliveries), and a high complication rate (35%): it suggests that early diagnosis and appropriate therapy may avert an adverse outcome.

Abstract The effect of wood extracts as antitermitic agents has been investigated in two Malaysian timber species, namely Madhuca utilis (bitis) and Neobalanocarpus heimii (chengal). The samples taken from Perak State Forest Reserve felled trees with the age of 38 and 45 years old, respectively. The composition of the extracts were analysed by GC-MS. In the toluene/EtOH extracts of M. utilis 19 (bark) and 17 (heartwood, hW) chemical constituents have been identified in total. The dominant compounds in bark were (2Z,6E)-farnesol (44%) and thymol methyl ether (29%) and in hW terpinen-4-ol (38%) and γ-terpinene (16%). The N. heimii essential oils contained 16 chemical constituents (8 in bark and 8 in hW) with benzyl carbinol (62%) and benzyl isoamyl ether (34%) for bark and eicosane (C20) (50%) and cyclopentanone (19%) for hW. Higher concentration of extracts from bark and hW of N. heimii, and from bark of M. utilis) gave 100% mortality of 3rd instars of Coptotermes gestroi Wasmann and 99% for M. utilis hW extract. The extracts of both wood species showed promising antitermitic properties against subterranean termites.

Age and growth of the king mackerel (Scomberomorus cavalla) were estimated for northeastern Brazil. A total of 405 sagittal otoliths from 140 males (24.4-112 cm), 73 females (28-114.8 cm) and 193 specimens of unknown sex (11.5-121 cm) were examined. Marginal increment analysis indicated an annual pattern for growth band deposition. The age classes ranged from 1 to 15 years. Length ranged from 11.5 to 121 cm. The Schnute model indicated that the von Bertalanffy growth model demonstrated the best adjustment, with p=1/b, and was therefore used for estimating growth. Back-calculated curves had smaller variances, giving the following estimated growth parameters for males: L∞= 116.8 cm, K = 0.190, t0 = 0.377; and females: L∞= 132.7 cm, K = 0.159 and t0 = 0.387. In order to compare the curves for males and females, the overlapping of 95% confidence intervals was performed for the parameters generated from the von Bertalanffy non-linear least square method. Specimens between 3 and 8 years of age represented 82.2% (n=5,783) of the catch composition, characterizing the species as a catchable stock in the region.

Abstract: Objective: To find effectiveness between online and traditional classroom teaching methods among final year class of MBBS. Methods: An observational study conducted at King Edward Medical University Lahore in April 2020 among the final year class of MBBS. Two Likert-scale questionnaires generated on Google Docs after taking approval from the university’s ethical committee. Informed consent was taken and all students of the final year class of MBBS, of both genders, were included. Univariate analysis was done taking preference of teaching method as a primary objective. P-value ≤0.05 considered significant. Data was analyzed using SPSS v20. Results: Three hundred and three (n=303) students responded to the traditional model and three hundred and ten (n=310) responded to online. Overall, the mean value of student preference for the traditional mode of teaching was higher than online (3.62 vs. 3.09). Univariate analysis showed, in the traditional mode of teaching students felt more concentrated during lectures (p<.001) and had more interclass interaction (p<.001). The student felt the online mode of teaching more effective (p=0.02) and found it more feasible to respond to class tests (p=0.01). However, both methods were significant regarding increasing productivity of students (p<.001, p<.001), non-complex (p=0.01, p=0.01) and enjoyable (p<.001, p=0.01)

Commercial nurseries use large amounts of water and nutrients to produce container-grown plants. The large volume of runoff containing nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) that leaves nurseries can contaminate surface and groundwater. Subsurface flow-constructed wetlands have been shown to effectively treat agricultural, industrial, and residential wastewater and to be well-suited for growers with limited production space. We investigated the possibility of using commercially available aquatic garden plants in subsurface-constructed wetlands to remove nutrients in a laboratory scale, gravel-based system. Seven popular aquatic garden plants received N and P from Hoagland's nutrient solution every 2 days for 8 weeks. These rates (0.39 to 36.81 mg·L−1 of N and 0.07 to 6.77 mg·L−1 P, respectively) encompassed low to high rates of nutrients found at various points between the discharge and inflow points of other constructed wetland systems currently in use at commercial nurseries. Plant biomass, nutrient recovery, and tissue nutrient concentration and content were measured. Whole plant dry weight positively correlated with total N and P supplied. Louisiana Iris hybrid ‘Full Eclipse’, Canna × generalis Bailey (pro sp.) ‘Bengal Tiger’, Canna × generalis Bailey (pro sp.) ‘Yellow King Humbert’, Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott ‘Illustris', Peltandra virginica (L.) Schott, and Pontederia cordata L. ‘Singapore Pink’ had the greatest N recovery rates. The P recovery rates were similar for the cannas, Colocasia esculenta ‘Illustris’, Louisiana Iris ‘Full Eclipse’, Pe. virginica, and Po. cordata ‘Singapore Pink’. The potential exists for creating a sustainable nursery and greenhouse production system that incorporates a subsurface-constructed wetland planted with marketable horticultural crops that provide remediation and revenue.

The following three species of parrots: Enicognathus leptorhynchus (King) (Choroy = Slender-billed Parakeet), E. ferrugineus (-Müller) (Cachaña = Austral Parakeet) and Cyanoliseus patagonus (Vieillot) (Tricahue or Barranquero Parrot = Burrowing Parrot) from Southern Chile and Argentina were examined for chewing lice. Four louse species were found: Psittacobrossus patagoni Price and Beer and Heteromenopon macrurum (Eichler) ex the Austral Parakeet, Paragoniocotes meridionalis Guimarães, H. macrurum and P. patagoni ex the Burrowing Parrot, and H. macrurum and a new species of Paragoniocotes Cummings ex the Slender-billed Parakeet and the Austral Parakeet. P. meriodionalis is a new record for Chilean fauna, and E. leptorhynchus is a new host for H. macrurum. Paragoniocotes enicognathidis n. sp. is described and illustrated, discussing the morphological affinities with its close relatives.

In the summer of 1995/96, 25 southern elephant seals, Mirounga leonina, were stomach lavaged at Stranger Point, King George Island, South Shetland Islands. Cephalopod remains were present in 72% of the individuals sampled (n = 18). Seven species of squid and three of octopus were identified. The squid Psychroteuthis glacialis was the most important prey in terms of numbers (77%), biomass (80.8%) and frequency of occurrence (94.4%). Next in importance in terms of mass was the squid Alluroteuthis antarcticus (7.8%) in the diet of females and the octopodid Pareledone ?charcoti in the diet of males (13.2%). Females preyed on a wider variety of squid taxa than males (7 vs 3) but octopodids occurred only in stomach contents from males. The predominance of P. glacialis in the prey of the South Shetland Islands elephant seals can be explained by the southerly location of the foraging areas of this population compared to South Georgia, Heard and Macquarie islands, where the diet of southern elephant seals has previously been analysed. Psychroteuthis glacialis is the predominant squid in waters close to the Antarctic continent.

Objective. The aim was to evaluate differences in the cervical vertebral skeletal maturity of unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) and non-cleft lip/palate (non-CLP) Saudi male orthodontic patients. Method. This cross-sectional multicenter study took place at the dental school, King Saud University and King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, between October 2014 and September 2015. The records of Saudi male orthodontic patients with UCLP n=69 were collected. Cervical vertebral maturation was assessed using their cephalometric radiographs. The records of 138 age-matched non-CLP Saudi male orthodontic patients served as controls. Results. There was a significant difference in skeletal maturity between the UCLP and non-CLP groups, as evident in the delayed skeletal development among the UCLP participants. Moreover, pubertal growth spurt onset was significantly earlier in the non-cleft participants in comparison with the UCLP participants p=0.009. Conclusions. There is delayed skeletal maturity among the UCLP Saudi male population in comparison with their non-CLP age-matched peers.

Context The King-Devick (KD) test has received considerable attention in the literature as an emerging concussion assessment. However, important test psychometric properties remain to be addressed in large-scale independent studies. Objective To assess (1) test-retest reliability between trials, (2) test-retest reliability between years 1 and 2, and (3) reliability of the 2 administration modes. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Collegiate athletic training facilities. Patients or Other Participants A total of 3248 intercollegiate student-athletes participated in year 1 (male = 55.3%, age = 20.2 ± 2.3 years, height = 1.78 ± 0.11 m, weight = 80.7 ± 21.0 kg) and 833 participated in both years. Main Outcome Measure(s) Time, in seconds, to complete the KD error free. The KD test reliability was assessed between trials and between annual tests over 2 years and stratified by test modality (spiral-bound cards [n = 566] and tablet [n = 264]). Results The KD test was reliable between trials (trial 1 = 43.2 ± 8.3 seconds, trial 2 = 40.8 ± 7.8 seconds; intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC] (2,1) = 0.888, P &lt; .001), between years (year 1 = 40.8 ± 7.4 seconds, year 2 = 38.7 ± 7.7 seconds; ICC [2,1] = 0.827, P &lt; .001), and for both spiral-bound cards (ICC [2,1] = 0.834, P &lt; .001) and tablets (ICC [2,1] = 0.827, P &lt; .001). The mean change between trials for a single test was −2.4 ± 3.8 seconds. Although most athletes improved from year 1 to year 2, 27.1% (226 of 883) of participants demonstrated worse (slower) KD times (3.2 ± 3.9 seconds) in year 2. Conclusions The KD test was reliable between trials and years and when stratified by modality. A small improvement of 2 seconds was identified with annual retesting, likely due to a practice effect; however, 27% of athletes displayed slowed performance from year 1 to year 2. These results suggest that the KD assessment was a reliable test with modest learning effects over time and that the assessment modality did not adversely affect baseline reliability.

Efficient eye movements provide a physical foundation for proficient reading skills. We investigated the effect of in-school saccadic training on reading performance. In this cross-over design, study participants (n = 327, 165 males; mean age [SD]: 7 y 6 mo [1y 1 mo]) were randomized into treatment and control groups, who then underwent eighteen 20-minute training sessions over 5 weeks using King-Devick Reading Acceleration Program Software. Pre- and posttreatment reading assessments included fluency, comprehension, and rapid number naming performance. The treatment group had significantly greater improvement than the control group in fluency (6.2% vs 3.6%, P = .0277) and comprehension (7.5% vs 1.5%, P = .0002). The high-needs student group significantly improved in fluency ( P < .001) and comprehension ( P < .001). We hypothesize these improvements to be attributed to the repetitive practice of reading-related eye movements, shifting visuospatial attention, and visual processing. Consideration should be given to teaching the physical act of reading within the early education curriculum.

A redução da disponibilidade hídrica causa efeitos na fisiologia e morfologia das plantas, sendo responsável por alterações no metabolismo, com implicações no desenvolvimento de plantas arbóreas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a influência do estresse hídrico no crescimento foliar e estado nutricional em plantas adultas de gonçalo-alves (Astronium fraxinifolium), guanandi (Calophyllum brasiliense Cambess.), ipê-amarelo (Handroanthus serratifolius (Vahl.), ipê-rosa (Handroanthus impetiginosa (Mart.) Matos.), marupá (Simarouba amara Aubl.) e mogno (Swietenia macrophylla King.), cultivadas em condições de sequeiro e irrigadas, no perímetro irrigado do Baixo Acaraú, Ceará. O delineamento experimental adotado foi o de medidas repetidas no tempo, num esquema de parcelas subsubdivididas (6 x 2 x 2), sendo a parcela principal composta por seis espécies, a subparcela por dois regimes hídricos (irrigado e sequeiro) e a subsubparcela pelas épocas de avaliação. Foram determinadas concentrações foliares de N, P e K, além de área foliar específica (AFE), grau de suculência (GS), índice relativo de clorofila (IRC) e eficiência fotossintética no uso de N (A/N) e P (A/P), nas estações seca e chuvosa. Os resultados mostraram que o ipê-amarelo foi a espécie mais sensível quanto à variação das concentrações de N, P e K nas folhas em resposta à disponibilidade de água no solo. Quanto à AFE, ipê-amarelo, ipê-rosa e mogno foram mais sensíveis às condições de déficit hídrico extremo. A restrição hídrica no solo ocasiona a diminuição da suculência foliar no gonçalo-alves e no mogno. O IRC é diretamente afetado pelo déficit hídrico e está relacionado ao maior GS e à menor AFE. Quanto a A/N e A/P, o gonçalo-alves foi a espécie mais eficiente, não sendo afetado pelas condições de disponibilidade hídrica do solo.
