The action of The Lucky Man Bar is set in both Zambia and Nepal. There are also snippets of action that occur in Congo and Greece. In Zambia, the action vacillates mostly between the city of Lusaka and the small town of Kafue. The descriptive narration of the Kafue area suggests that the author is very familiar with the geography of the area in and around Kafue. A good example is the description of the physical features of the area where the drive takes place in the prologue. This is indicative of the fact that the author actually worked in the area for Sino Hydro, a Chinese construction company. Some of the similarities between the author and the narrator, as a matter of fact, invite questions regarding whether or not the novel is a palimpsest of part-fact and part-fiction.

Fisheries are an important resource in Zambia, but are experiencing overexploitation and are under increasing pressure from external development activities that are compromising river ecosystem services and functioning. One such system is the Kafue Flats floodplain, which is under threat from hydropower development. This paper reviews the effect of potential hydropower development on the Kafue Flats floodplain and explores mechanisms to optimise the expansion of hydropower while maintaining the ecosystem functioning and services that the floodplain delivers. Since completion of the Kafue Gorge and Itezhi-tezhi dams, seasonal fluctuations in the height and extent of flooding have been suppressed. This situation is likely to get worse with the proposed incorporation of a hydropower scheme into Itezhi-tezhi dam, which will operate under a hydropeaking regime. This will have major ramifications for the fish communities and ecosystem functioning and is likely to result in the demise of the fishery, along with destruction of the wetlands and associated wildlife. To redress the problem, it is recommended that an environmental-flow study is conducted, as initiated by World Wildlife Fund, to protect provision of the existing ecosystem services and optimise hydropower development, thus ensuring sustainability of the aquatic resources of the Kafue Flats for future generations.

Members of the genus Borrelia are arthropod-borne spirochetes that are human and animal pathogens. Vertebrate hosts, including wild animals, are pivotal to the circulation and maintenance of Borrelia spirochetes. However, information on Borrelia spirochetes in vertebrate hosts in Zambia is limited. Thus, we aimed to investigate the presence of Borrelia spirochetes in wild animals and cattle in Zambia. A total of 140 wild animals of four species and 488 cattle DNA samples from /near the Kafue National Park were collected for real-time PCR screening, followed by characterization using three different genes with positive samples. Five impalas and 20 cattle tested positive using real-time PCR, and sequence analysis revealed that the detected Borrelia were identified to be Borrelia theileri, a causative agent of bovine borreliosis. This is the first evidence of Borrelia theileri in African wildlife and cattle in Zambia. Our results suggest that clinical differentiation between bovine borreliosis and other bovine diseases endemic in Zambia is required for better treatment and control measures. As this study only included wild and domestic animals in the Kafue ecosystem, further investigations in other areas and with more wildlife and livestock species are needed to clarify a comprehensive epidemiological status of Borrelia theileri in Zambia.

Determining the incidence and causes of craniodental damage in wild carnivores is often constrained by limited access to specimens with associated ecological data, such as prey type and abundance. We assessed dental condition and cranial injuries in lion, leopard, and spotted hyena in relation to prey and predator populations in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley, where large prey are more abundant and lion and leopard more numerous, and the Greater Kafue Ecosystem, where smaller prey species are more prevalent and lion and leopard less common. In Luangwa, lions had significantly higher rates of tooth fracture, and blunt trauma injuries attributable to prey-handling, compared to Kafue lions. In contrast, leopards in both regions had similar rates of tooth wear and breakage. Overall, lions showed a significantly higher tooth fracture rate than leopards on a per tooth basis. Spotted hyenas had the highest rates of tooth wear and fracture among all three carnivores, and greatly exceeded previously recorded rates based on historical samples. Despite larger numbers of lion and leopard in Luangwa, there was no difference in incidence of intraspecific injuries between regions. These results are consistent with a greater abundance of large prey species, especially buffalo, in the diets of Luangwa lions, and previous work showing a reliance on smaller prey species in Kafue throughout the large carnivore guild.

This paper examines changes in formal and informal land access rules for women in the Kafue Flats of southern Zambia and identifies alternatives to land privatization. In rural African communities dependent on subsistence production, access to common pool resources (CPRs) such as fisheries, wildlife or wild fruits made an important contribution to household food and nutritional security. In the pre-colonial period, the use of agricultural land and associated CPRs was governed by local institutions of common property, characterized by more-than-human relationships embedded in the local animistic ontology. To examine how women’s pre-colonial access rights were increasingly disregarded in the wake of new statutory laws, we analyzed qualitative ethnographic data on livelihoods and food security from three time periods between 2002 and 2018. The findings show how customary law land tenure has remained important, despite being complemented by statutory law designed to also protect women’s property rights. We conclude that women’s customary access rights to land and CPRs must be taken into account in the drafting of formal legislation, as suggested by successful examples of bottom-up institution building in other regions.

Ex-situconservancies are expanding alternatives to livestock production in Zambia albeit the lack of information on circulating infectious parasites from wildlife. Therefore, 12 wildlife species were examined on a game ranch were all species were found to be infected byRhipecephalusspp. Haemoparasite infections were estimated at 7.37% (n=95) withBabesiaspp. detected in bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus);Anaplasma marginalein impala (Aepyceros melampus) and puku (Kobus vardonii) for the first time in Zambia. The majority of worm species isolated from bovids were not detected in equids and, vice versa. Our findings intimate ecological and behavioural patterns of some animals as deterministic to exposure. Kafue lechwe (Kobus leche kafuensis) had the widest range of worm species with more infected organs than other animals suggesting their semi aquatic nature contributory to prolonged worm exposure compared to other animals. On the other hand, Kafue lechwe had the least tick infections attributable more to shorter attachment periods as they spend prolonged periods submerged in water. Our findings indicate the vital role that wildlife plays in the epidemiology of parasitic diseases. To reduce the infection burden, control measures should be focused on reducing transmission to highly susceptible animal species as described herein.

AbstractThe Kafue lechwe antelope (Kobus leche kafuensis), a medium-sized, semi-aquatic antelope, grazes extensively on pastures accessed by livestock in and around Lochinvar and Blue Lagoon national parks in the Kafue wetlands of Zambia. This interaction has a potential for bi-modal transmission of a wide range of parasitic helminths between lechwe and domestic ruminants. A survey was conducted to investigate the status of helminths in the Kafue lechwe during the 2008 (July–December) hunting season, involving 65 animals hunted under special research licences. Worm identification was based on morphological features using standard identification keys. Eleven different types of helminths were identified in the animals studied; namely, Oesophagostomum, Bunostomum, Cooperia, Dictyocaulus, Marshallagia, Stilesia, Setaria, Trichuris, Fasciola, amphistomes and Schistosoma. Amphistomes (100%) and Oesophagostomum (60.9%) were the most common while Fasciola (7.8%) and Stilesia (1.6%) were the least of the identified helminths. There was no evidence that helminths, at intensities observed, adversely affected the health of the lechwe. The degree of worm infection was observed to vary between the two study areas, with Blue Lagoon recording higher infection levels compared to Lochinvar. The host range of many of the helminths found in the Kafue lechwe is broad and could serve as a potentially stable source of infection to domestic animals such as goats and cattle. Therefore, issues concerning livestock management and conservation may arise.

When the Kafue National Park was established in 1950 the northern boundary was drawn to include the Busanga Plain, where there was a small population of red lechwe, much reduced by hunting. The effect of the protection was striking: numbers began to increase immediately and by 1973 there were 2000 individuals. In 1985 the authors conducted censuses to establish how the antelopes had fared in the intervening years. Their findings reveal just how successful the conservation measures have been.

Abstract. Tropical floodplains play an important role in organic matter transport, storage, and transformation between headwaters and oceans. However, the fluxes and quality of organic carbon (OC) and organic nitrogen (ON) in tropical river-floodplain systems are not well constrained. We explored the quantity and characteristics of dissolved and particulate organic matter (DOM and POM) in the Kafue River flowing through the Kafue Flats (Zambia). The Kafue Flats are a tropical dam-impacted river-floodplain system in the Zambezi River basin. During the flooding season, >80% of the Kafue River water passed through the floodplain, mobilizing large quantities of OC and ON, which resulted in a net export of 75 kg OC km−2 d−1 and 2.9 kg ON km−2 d−1, 80% of which was in the dissolved form. Mass budget estimates showed that ON export, denitrification, and burial caused an annual deficit of ~21 000 t N yr−1 in the Kafue Flats. A N isotope balance and the δ15N of DON and PON suggest that N-fixation must level out the large N losses. The elemental C:N ratio of ~20, the δ13C values of higher than −24‰, and spectroscopic properties (excitation-emission matrices) showed that DOM in the river was mainly of terrestrial origin. Despite a threefold increase in OC loads due to inputs from the floodplain, the river DOM characteristics remained relatively constant along the sampled 400-km river reach. This suggested that floodplain DOM had similar properties than DOM from the upstream reservoir. In contrast, based on its low δ13C of −29‰ and the C:N ratio of ~8, POM originated from phytoplankton production in the upstream reservoir and in the floodplain. While the reservoir had little impact on DOM properties, terrestrial POM was efficiently trapped and, instead, phytoplankton-derived POM was discharged to the downstream Kafue Flats.

This article discusses the challenges of decentralising climate governance in the Global South in the context of intensifying climate change. Using qualitative methods of data collection and analysis, we interviewed a total of 112 participants who participated in the study, including traditional leaders, ward councillors, subject-matter experts, government officials and members of the public who took part in focus group discussions. Our results show that devolution, delegation, deconcentration and privatisation have been used as strategies for decentralising climate action in the Itezhi-Tezhi District. However, these methods of decentralisation are affected by several factors, including unclear rules for elected and appointed leaders, which influence the devolution of decision-making responsibilities at the local government level. Regarding delegation, decentralising climate governance is affected by inadequate public participation, particularly in the design and execution of climate initiatives in the Kafue wetlands. Furthermore, this article shows that deconcentration is likely to affect climate governance because the national government has not deconcentrated the units for climate governance from the line ministry to the local authority. Privatisation, which has been an effective way of decentralising climate governance in the Kafue wetlands, has also been problematic due to inadequate community participation. These challenges and opportunities serve as lessons for building resilience in effective decentralised climate governance in the Kafue wetlands. This article adds to the ongoing discourse on the efficacy of decentralising climate governance in the Global South and offers valuable insights for future research in this genre of academic inquiry in Sub-Saharan Africa.

SUMMARYThe performance obstacles surrounding community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) in southern Africa have much to do with understanding of environmental governance systems and how these are devolved. CBNRM appears to be failing because of flawed environmental governance systems compounded by their ineffective devolution. A case study in Zambia is used to illustrate why and how one CBNRM scheme for the most part faltered. It draws on practical experiences involving the devolution of decision-making and benefit-distribution processes on a floodplain wetland known as the Kafue Flats. While this CBNRM scheme was designed to facilitate the devolution of key components of an environmental governance system, the resultant efforts were largely unsuccessful because of the poor social relationships between government actors and local rural communities. It is argued that in Zambia, at least from an environmental governance system perspective, CBNRM has mostly failed. While generally bringing some marginal improvements to local communities, the construction and execution of an effective environmental governance system have been largely flawed.

The purpose of this study was to explore the challenges that contribute to low uptake of Constituency Development Fund (CDF) among Small and Medium scale Enterprise (SMEs) in Kafue, Zambia. Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have been identified as the substance for economic growth and national development for both developed and developing countries. The method in this study was sought to comprehend the challenges that led to low uptake of constituency development fund among the SMEs of Kafue District. The study adopted a qualitative approach and employed a purposive sampling. Primary data was collected from 40 study respondents using; semi-structured interviews, literature review and two focus group discussions (FDGs). The data was analysed in a thematic approach and there was document analysis and validating of data. The results of this study identified the challenges affecting the performance of SMEs in utilizing the existing CDF, and some of the findings were; inconsistent disbursement, lack of accountability, lack of new technology, lack of skills labour, government unfavorable fiscal policy and policy in consistences, lack of sensitization, political influence and little money or insufficient fund. The emergent themes reported in this study indicate significant qualitative, disparities on the challenges among SMEs on the low uptake of CDF. This in return, affects the development of communities where these SMEs operate with business dimensions across different contexts. Our findings in this study suggests increase of 40% allocation of funds in the current CDF policy of 2022, monitoring and implementation programs must be strengthened, and skills training should be given enough concentration on both SMEs and CDF technocrats. Lastly, the corporate entrepreneurs should inculcate the team spirit of training and developing their management and workforce in order to build a strong capacity building, that is ready to face business challenges and take advantage of Constituency Development Fund. In conclusion, the study suggests that policy makers may consider the findings in this study, to formulate policies which may create an environment that is feasible for the development of SMEs through Constituency Development Fund in Kafue, Zambia.

In an article in Water Policy (Merrett, Water Policy 7(2), 2005), the author presented a general theory on the likelihood of catchments moving from surplus to deficit in terms of their precipitation's adequacy to meet social, economic and environmental flows. The paper called for networked, international research to test the general theory and its causal hypotheses. The paper presented below applies the theory to the Kafue Basin in Zambia and suggests that understanding river basin surpluses and deficits requires the analysis of various measures of catchment density.

Introduction: Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) has economic and many health benefits, including reduced adult obesity and incidence of childhood and non-communicable diseases. However, negative experiences with breastfeeding the first baby significantly impact the success of EBF, particularly with first-time mothers who report having had challenges failing to practice EBF with subsequent babies. Purpose: This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of first-time mothers with EBF in Kafue, Zambia. Material and methods: A qualitative, interpretive phenomenological study, with a non-probability, purposive sample size of 25 first-time mothers within the first six months postpartum was conducted. Face-to-face interviews with a core question followed with prompts to ascertain respondents’ interpretations to the core question were carried out. Transcript content analysis of the data was then done with text information assigned descriptive codes and categorised according to emerging themes using thematic analysis as described by Maguire & Delahunt.1 Results: Three major themes emerged; “Challenges initiating and continuing breastfeeding”, “Psychological aspects of EBF practice in relation to coping” and “Inadequate support networks/mechanisms”. First-time mothers experienced diverse challenges with EBF and information received from healthcare providers did not prepare or help them adequately. Practical support was received from nurses and midwives, however only in the first six weeks postpartum. In some instances, support was either not given or it was not supportive of EBF. Conclusion: Given their inexperience, first-time mothers experience EBF challenges that are difficult to deal with leading to very negative effects on their perceptions of EBF thus negatively affecting EBF practices. Without adequate and appropriate practical support in the perinatal period, they are most likely not to EBF successfully. Teaching on danger signs of breastfeeding complications and incorporating breastfeeding clinics in the Maternal and Child Health Departments could be utilised as strategies to help them sustain successful EBF practices.

Leadership training symbolizes one of the instructional tools that school leaders can employ in order to deliver quality education in lower primary grades in Zambia. The delivery of quality education has been reiterated by Zambia in the Vision 2030 whose objective is to offer all-encompassing and quality education to all children by the year 2030. The objective of this study was therefore to analyse how school leadership training could improve the management of lower primary grades in selected primary schools of Kafue district. In order to achieve the objective of the research, a qualitative, interpretivist approach was adopted. The research design was descriptive in nature. The sample size comprised twenty-four (24) respondents, who were drawn from three (03) primary schools, in Kafue District, Zambia. Overall, the research found that school leadership was critical in the management of lower primary school grades as such grades are the bedrock and foundation of the entire educational ladder. School leaders should provide academic, professional, moral, financial and social support to teachers in order to motivate them for school improvement and lower primary school results improvement. They should set directions, develop teachers and make the school organisation work through monitoring teacher preparedness and the learning activity. Based on the research findings, the primary recommendation of the research was that school head teachers, senior teachers and school in-service coordinators should ensure that Teacher Group Meetings (TGMs), Continuous Professional Development (CPD), and School Program of In-service for the Term (SPRINT) activities take place in their schools as they are a cost-effective way of raising teacher capacity and professional development. In addition, monitoring of teacher preparedness should be taken as a priority in order to improve results.

The implementation of principles for water governance is widely accepted but challenging for the whole water sector of a developing country like Zambia, because of the legal and administrative changes and organizational requirements involved. In February 2010, a revised water policy for Zambia was approved by the Cabinet. The revised National Water Policy 2010 aims to improve water resources management by establishing institutional coordination and by defining roles as well as responsibilities for various ministries. Taking into account the previous political and administration changes, this paper points out the problems and challenges of the implementation of good water governance mechanisms in Zambia. Focusing on the Kafue River Basin, from which water is abstracted for a variety of conflicting purposes (like municipal supplies, industrial use, mining, irrigation of agricultural land, fishery activities, wetland reserves and hydropower production), the gaps in implementing good water governance and Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in Zambia are identified, as well as the factors causing these gaps in the Zambian water sector. The paper finishes with a overview of the opportunities given by the new water policy through Water User Associations (WUAs) at a local level.

In seasonally inundated landscapes of southern central Africa very large termite mounds of Macrotermes natalensis offer a refuge for flood-intolerant trees during the flood season. In the matrix landscape surrounding these islands the seasonally waterlogged and then anaerobic soil conditions and the browsing by megaherbivores during the dry season allow for grass and herbaceous vegetation only. During the rainy season each termitarium forms an isolated island which due to its relative dryness allows survival of the trees and the associated fauna. During the dry season the termites try to establish new colonies with new mounds. However, the successful formation of new termitaria islands seems to be a rare event. In this case study from Dundumwezi in the Kafue National Park, Zambia, we provide a description of the termitaria islands and their vegetation. Furthermore, we analyse spatial patterns of termite mound islands in the surroundings of Kafue National Park und Bangweulu Plains / Kasanka National Park based on remote sensing imagery. Our results confirm that competition among colonies of large termitaria in homogeneous habitats causes very regular spatial patterns.

The small businesses in Kafue District take place to provide solutions that answer the overall economic and social development difficulties such as increase in the levels of unemployment, poverty, and inequality. The government’s function has always been to create a favourable environment for business for all SMEs to thrive better. Due to such difficulties encountered by the citizenry, despite existing empowerment policies, the government introduced the Constituency Development Fund to support SMEs within their cooperatives in Zambia; this is to reduce the barriers that obstruct SMEs’ profile opportunities to grow and to be sustainable to fulfil government and society expectations. The drive of this study was to analyze thematically different profile opportunities of SMEs in the manner in which they can access CDF. The study focused on opportunities that lie in each SME’s profile and identified the profiles according to their needs. The method which was used in this study was qualitative and employed purposive sampling to comprehend SMEs’ profile opportunities. The results of this study resolved that SMEs’ profile needs to be helped to core exists as they utilize or struggle to access funding from the existing CDF. The emergent themes reported in this study show that there are significant qualitative profiles to consider as officers in charge of CDF disburse the funds to the beneficiaries. In conclusion, the study recommended policymakers support small businesses to grow in an inclusive, innovative and sustainable way in line with the financial opportunities available. The findings in this study will establish equal distribution, utilization, and management of resources by responsible government agencies in Kafue, Zambia.

Abstract. Tropical floodplains play an important role in organic matter transport, storage, and transformation between headwaters and oceans. However, the fluxes and quality of organic carbon (OC) and organic nitrogen (ON) in tropical river-floodplain systems are not well constrained. We explored the quantity and characteristics of dissolved and particulate organic matter (DOM and POM, respectively) in the Kafue River flowing through the Kafue Flats (Zambia), a tropical river-floodplain system in the Zambezi River basin. During the flooding season, > 80% of the Kafue River water passed through the floodplain, mobilizing large quantities of OC and ON, which resulted in a net export of 69–119 kg OC km−2 d−1 and 3.8–4.7 kg ON km−2 d−1, 80% of which was in the dissolved form. The elemental C : N ratio of ~ 20, the comparatively high δ13C values of −25‰ to −21‰, and its spectroscopic properties (excitation-emission matrices) showed that DOM in the river was mainly of terrestrial origin. Despite a threefold increase in OC loads due to inputs from the floodplain, the characteristics of the riverine DOM remained relatively constant along the sampled 410-km river reach. This suggests that floodplain DOM displayed properties similar to those of DOM leaving the upstream reservoir and implied that the DOM produced in the reservoir was relatively short-lived. In contrast, the particulate fraction was 13C-depleted (−29‰) and had a C : N ratio of ~ 8, which indicated that POM originated from phytoplankton production in the reservoir and in the floodplain, rather than from plant debris or resuspended sediments. While the upstream dam had little effect on the DOM pool, terrestrial particles were retained, and POM from algal and microbial sources was released to the river. A nitrogen mass balance over the 2200 km2 flooded area revealed an annual deficit of 15 500–22 100 t N in the Kafue Flats. The N isotope budget suggests that these N losses are balanced by intense N-fixation. Our study shows that the Kafue Flats are a significant local source of OC and ON to downstream ecosystems and illustrates how the composition of riverine OM can be altered by dams and floodplains in tropical catchments.

Worldwide, bovine tuberculosis is most common in agricultural regions of Central and South America, Sub-Saharan Africa and South-Western Asia. Bovine tuberculosis was reported to be endemic in the Zambian traditional cattle sector with a high herd prevalence of 49.8% recorded from areas within, and adjacent to the Kafue Basin as far back as 1995. An analytical cross sectional study design was applied to a sample size of 384 selected cattle owners in the Kafue Basin. A semi-structured questionnaire was administered to the cattle owners who were randomly selected. The data was analyzed using STATA Version 15 Software. The results from the study showed that 54% of the cattle owners experienced bovine tuberculosis among their cattle while 46% did not experience bovine tuberculosis. The prevalence of bovine tuberculosis in cattle was higher among the male cattle owners (76%) compared to female cattle owners (24%). There was a significant relationship of p value < 0.029 between level of knowledge of cattle owners and the prevalence of bovine tuberculosis. Unemployed cattle owners had higher odds of experiencing bovine tuberculosis among their cattle (OR 3.488; 95% CI 1.341-9.067) and the relationship was statistically significant at p value < 0.010. There was equally a significant relationship of p value < 0.042 between vaccination status of animals and the occurrence of bovine tuberculosis. The study showed that the majority of cattle owners lacked awareness and had a lower level of understanding of the disease and its public health significance. Therefore, the implications of the study suggest the creation of disease control programs that will ensure regular herd testing for bovine tuberculosis, routine vaccinations of animals, deliberate quarantine of infected animals as well as community health education about transmission, control and prevention of the disease.

Bovine tuberculosis (BTB) is endemic in African buffaloes (Syncerus caffer) in some National Parks in Southern Africa, whilst no studies have been conducted on BTB on buffalo populations in Zambia. The increased demand for ecotourism and conservation of the African buffalo on private owned game ranches has prompted the Zambian Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) and private sector in Zambia to generate a herd of “BTB-free buffaloes” forex situconservation. In the present study, 86 African buffaloes from four different herds comprising a total of 530 animals were investigated for the presence of BTB for the purpose of generating “BTB free” buffalo forex-situconservation. Using the comparative intradermal tuberculin test (CIDT) the BTB status at both individual animal and herd level was estimated to be 0.0% by the CIDT technique. Compared to Avian reactors only, a prevalence of 5.8% was determined whilst for Bovine-only reactors a prevalence of 0.0% was determined. These results suggest the likelihood of buffalo herds in the Kafue National Park being free of BTB.

AbstractThis study investigated interactions amongFasciola gigantica,Schistosomaspp. andAmphistomumspp. concurrent natural infections in Zambian cattle, based on egg and worm counts. In the abattoir 315 cattle were screened for worms ofF. giganticain the liver,Schistosomaspp. in mesenteric veins and/orAmphistomumspp. in the rumen. One hundred and thirty-three (42.2%) of the abattoir-examined cattle harboured one, two or all three trematodes. Of 133 cattle, 50 were randomly selected for worm and egg counts. The mean numbers ( ± SD) ofAmphistomum, SchistosomaandFasciolawere 622.08 ( ± 97.87), 33.68 ( ± 7.44) and 19.46 ( ± 4.58), respectively. A total of 32% harboured all the three trematodes, 66% hadF. giganticaandAmphistomumspp. infections, 52% hadSchistosomaspp. andAmphistomumspp. infections while 32% hadF. giganticaandSchistosomainfections. A positive correlation (P = 0.014) was found betweenF. giganticaandAmphistomumworm burdens. There were no correlations betweenAmphistomumandSchistosomaworm burdens and betweenF. giganticaandSchistosomaworm burdens. It may be concluded that there is no significant cross-protection among these trematodes in cattle in endemic areas.
