Повний текст джерелаMy doctoral research is a study of the rescue activities, methods, motivations, and moral psychology of Ukrainian rescuers of Jewish victims of the Holocaust, with a particular focus on Nazi-occupied Reichskommissariat Ukraine and neighboring Eastern Galicia (the southeastern district of Nazi-occupied Poland), though stories from the military administration, the Transnistrian Governorate (under Romanian occupation), and Carpathian Ruthenia (under Hungarian occupation) are also evaluated, as - for the sake of comparison - are stories from other landscapes across Europe. In spotlighting acts of heroic altruism, my project is an enquiry into the nitty-gritty of “how” people rescued and the various questions that emerge from that understanding, i.e. a) what methods rescuers enacted, b) what considerations they made (whether consciously or not), c) how they interacted with the naturally-occurring and manmade structures and tools at their disposal, d) how they relied on familial and/or communal resources, and e) how the success and the ethicality of any given rescue could be affected by socioeconomic, political, and religious factors. My research also addresses the question of “why,” under an occupation where rescuing was punishable by death, some bystanders were able to become rescuers, while others, amongst them even ethical, non-prejudiced people, were not. Set against the background of a broader exploration of Ukrainian wartime behavior - from collaboration to complaisance to resistance to Nazi empire-building - this research aims to encapsulate the full complexity of life under occupation, the divergent realities of the Holocaust in Ukraine, and the shades of grey in the historical record

Повний текст джерелаThe focus of this Ph. D. Thesis is on individuals who supported Jews in their flight from deportation, thus helping save them from certain death in ghettos, labor camps, and death camps. Estimates point to several tens of thousands of people facilitating the survival in illegal circumstances of persecuted Jews within the ares of the "Old Reich," which is to say Germany within its 1937 boundaries. Starting in the 1960s, historians have inquired into the sources of this unusual behavior, frequently emphasizing the courage and specific personalities of different helpers while refraining from analyzing the social context of their efforts. The present work inverts this perspective: instead of centering my attention on the personality features displayed by individuals, I closely consider the circumstances at the base of their action. To this end, the thesis is methodologically grounded in the instrument of the collective biography. Using roughly fifty biographies of these helpers, I examine the ways their social relations, preliminary experiences, and everyday habits contributed in an essential way to the aid they offered. In addition, I offer an overview of the extent and forms of assistance offered, evaluate the existent research literature on the topic, and discuss the shift in public memory concerning the theme of "quiet heroes" from the late 1940s until the present

This official award is given by the State of Israel and Yad Vashem to the non-Jews who rescued Jews in Nazi Europe. These recognitions rely on formal "testimonies" by the Jews who benefited such an help. In 2000, a French law has created a national commemoration of the "French righteous". This PhD considers the social dynamics of memory. It assesses the roles played in the process of expression of memory respectively by the institunional framework, the policy of memory and the situation of the individuals within the social space. Through this case study, the author assesses the relevance of the different concepts wich can help to think memory as an object for social sciences. She also puts into perspective Maurice Halbwachs's sociology of memory through an extensive study of an empirical object considered through various scales and standpoints

Повний текст джерелаThis historical survey is based on a close reading of the major papers of the local press in Montpellier and on an investigation conducted in several local branches of the Public Records Office. Its one and only purpose is to achieve a synthesis of the situation of the Jews under the Vichy régime in the Hérault départment (administrative division). A systematic and comprehensive analysis of all articles relating to the Jews in "Le Petit Méridional", "L'Eclair" and "La Croix Méridionale" has made it possible to highlight the image of them conveyed therein within the context of the official antisemite propaganda. In this three-point study, the second point sheds light on the living condition of the many foreign Jews that had found refuge in more than sixty towns and villages before thet were incorporated in so-called "Groupements de travailleurs étrangers" (Grouping of foreign workers), kept as civilian internees in the Agde camp, then sent to other camps and eventually deported. The third and last point of this research work aims at assessing the extent of the spoliations French jews were the victims of and it analyses the part played in the fight for survival by the Jewish organisations and the "Justs among the Nations"
