This dissertation has examined the tanci fiction Jing zhong zhuan, or A Biography of Dedication and Loyalty, authored by a gentry woman writer Zhou Yingfang in the late nineteenth century. I argue that by adapting the well-known patriotic story of General Yue Fei in Chinese history, Zhou Yingfang suggests new directions in grand historical narrative in her own voice and from her own perspective. Negotiating the writing conventions of earlier legends, she turns the stereotyped masculine image of Yue Fei into a hero in both public and domestic settings. In addition, she adds many detailed episodes from Yue Fei's family life and portrays virtuous women in a chaotic historical period, paralleling the conventional narration of wars and politics. Although often (mis)read as a text that inspires nationalism, Jing zhong zhuan actually redefines significant values in late imperial China, including the importance of family and the complex relation between filial piety and political loyalty. The tanci also enriches the notions of female virtues, expanding them from chastity to beauty, learning and management skills. Employing tanci, a unique genre that is closely associated with and quite dominated by women, Zhou Yingfang demonstrates her gendered consciousness in relationship to late nineteenth-century Confucian family dynamics and her self-representation and literary engagement within grand historical narratives. My dissertation sheds light on the dynamics between women's writing and historiography, as well as on the discourses of patriotism and emerging nationalism at the turn of the twentieth-century in China.

The present research is an attempt at a morphological analysis of classical Chinese supernatural fiction known as zhiguai under the theoretical framework designed by Vladimir Propp and later developed by Alan Dundes. As to the study of Chinese zhiguai tales, mountains of work has been done, but research is usually confined either to exploration into the geographical-historical sources of these tales or to the recognition and reconstruction of society in ancient China. It is therefore believed that a systematic study of zhiguai literature from a linguistics-oriented structuralfunctional perspective will shed light on the rules governing the textual organisation of classical Chinese fiction of the supernatural and strange. This thesis will be divided into two parts with the first one aiming at a diachronic survey of zhiguai literature. In this section, the origins of this genre and its development through dynasties in traditional China will be explored with attention focused on an evidential and thematic study of zhiguai works most influential and representative of the time and of the author as well. Part Two, which will start with a review of Propp's morphological method and model, is devoted to a synchronic study of Chinese zhiguai fiction from a Proppian perspective. For each tale text selected for morphological analysis, functions will be identified, and a linear functional scheme presented, and described in terms of the sequence of functions and the distribution of functions among dramatis personae. All the structural and functional traits will be tabulated, discussed and, where possible and necessary, compared. Finally, based on a data analysis, a conclusion will be made on morphological features and structural patterns of classical Chinese fiction of the supernatural and strange. Fifty zhiguai tales will be selected for analysis from ancient zhushu (commentaries), leishu (categorised books), congshu (collectanea), or authoritative modern editions of works of supernatural fiction in classical Chinese. In the course of selection, priority has been given to those about other/supernatural beings or mortals with supernatural power as classified by Aarne as "Tales of magic" in conformity with Propp's corpus of Russian fairy tales in Morphology ofthe Folktale.

The design of autonomous agents capable of performing a given goal in a 3D domain continues to be a challenge for computer animated story generation systems. We present a novel prototype which consists of a 3D engine and a planner for a simple virtual world. We incorporate the 2D planner into the 3D engine to provide 3D animations. Based on the plan, the 3D world is created and the objects are positioned. Then the plan is linearized into simpler actions for object animation and rendered via the 3D engine. We use JINNI3D as the engine and WARPLAN-C as the planner for the above-mentioned prototype. The user can interact with the system using a simple natural language interface. The interface consists of a shallow parser, which is capable of identifying a set of predefined basic commands. The command given by the user is considered as the goal for the planner. The resulting plan is created and rendered in 3D. The overall system is comparable to a character based interactive story generation system except that it is limited to the predefined 3D environment.

Jin Ping Mei 金瓶梅, œuvre controversée dès son apparition à la fin du XVIe siècle, fut très tôt reconnue comme une des œuvres phare du roman chinois en langue vulgaire, notamment par Feng Menglong 馮夢龍 (1574-1646) qui le désigna comme un des Si da qishu 四 大奇書 (Quatre grands livres extraordinaires). De nombreux mystères à son sujet restent encore débattus aujourd’hui, parmi lesquels l’identité de son auteur, l’authenticité de ses éditions, ou les interprétations possibles de ce roman. La réputation exécrable dont il continue de souffrir en Chine continentale ne l’a pas empêché de susciter l’intérêt des premiers sinologues français et anglais et ceci dès 1816. En prenant pour point de départ une analyse des sources et une synthèse des hypothèses en cours concernant Jin Ping Mei et ses interprétations, notre thèse fera le point sur toutes les adaptations et traductions en anglais et en français de l’ouvrage, notamment en mettant en parallèle les deux meilleures traductions intégrales dont nous disposons actuellement, à savoir en français, celle d’André Lévy (1985), et en anglais, celle de David Tod Roy (de 1993 à 2013). Cette confrontation nous permettra de distinguer les différentes interprétations de l’ouvrage retenues par les traducteurs, et d’exposer les stratégies mises en place par eux pour le traduire. Un aspect crucial de notre travail consistera à souligner dans notre critique les positions interprétatives des traducteurs, et le potentiel interprétatif qui résulte de leurs choix. Loin de vouloir appliquer à ces traductions un jugement de valeur, nous espérons au contraire offrir une meilleure compréhension de la profondeur de cette œuvre si complexe et controversée
Jin Ping Mei 金瓶梅, one of the greatest masterpieces of the vernacular Chinese fiction, faced controversy ever since it appeared at the end of the 16th century. Scholars like Feng Menglong馮夢龍 (1574-1646) recognized the novel to be exceptional early on, placing it amongst the Si da qishu 四大奇書 (Four Masterworks of the Ming Novel). However, there still is a halo of unresolved mysteries around Jin Ping Mei, despite the fact that it has been the focal point of numerous studies. Some questions remain unsolved, such as the identity of its author, the authenticity of its editions, or its possible interpretations. Despite the bad reputation that the novel still suffers from in mainland China, its raised the interest from French and English sinologists as soon as 1816. Ever since, the novel has been the subject of partial translations and adaptations highly perfectible. Starting with an analysis of the sources and a synthesis of current hypothesis about the book and its interpretations, our thesis will then focus on all the adaptations and translations of the novel in English and in French, to ultimately confront the two best integral translations available to that day, namely André Lévy’s (1985) and David Tod Roy’s (1993 to 2013). This confrontation will allow us to distinguish the interpretations that translators had of the novel, and to expose the strategies they resorted to. A crucial part of our work will be to underline the interpretative positions of both translators, and the interpretative potential that results from their choices. Our goal is not to judge of the value of said translations, but rather to offer a better understanding of the depth of Jin Ping Mei
自十六世紀末問世以來,《金瓶梅》一直都是一部有爭議的作品。作為一部中國古代通俗長篇小說的著作,以及被馮夢龍稱為“四大奇書”之一,《金瓶梅》至今為止仍存在許多未解之謎。雖然對作品的相關研究日漸增多,但是關於作者的身份、版本以及對作品的闡釋等問題尚未達成共識。直至今日,《金瓶梅》在中國仍臭名昭著,但是這並不妨礙它在國外的流傳。早至1816 年,這部作品便引起了法國第一位漢學家的注意。兩個世紀以來,在法國紛紛出現了各種選段翻譯、改寫以及問題種種的不完整的法譯本。同樣,《金瓶梅》在英美國家的傳播之路也是漫長而艱難。該論文首先對《金瓶梅》的文學特色以及作品闡釋的問題進行相關探討,然後對《金瓶梅》所有翻譯和改寫的法譯本和英譯本進行研究,特別是對該作品的兩個完整的法譯本(André Lévy 雷威安 1985 年譯成)和英譯本(David TodRoy 苪效衛 1993 年至2013 年五卷本) 進行對比研究。通過對這些譯本的研究,我們能深入地了解譯者對作品的闡釋,他們採用的翻譯策略,以及他們譯本的優劣性。該論文的研究重點是譯者對作品闡釋的主體性,以及他們的翻譯策略給譯本讀者對原著理解帶來的影響。我們的研究並不是為了對譯本進行質量的評估,而是通過對譯本的研究來讓我們對《金瓶梅》這一複雜而極具爭議的作品有更深層的了解。

This thesis will explore the images of nüxia or “female knight-errant” in Jin Yong’s novels: The Eagle-Shooting Heroes, the Giant Eagle and Its Companion, and the Heaven Sword and the Dragon Saber. The depiction of nüxia underwent a significant development from the classical to modern literature of knight-errantry-related genre. Jin Yong, the master of wuxia fiction, has created many remarkable nüxia that distinguishes his nüxia images from the literary conventions. To examine Jin Yong’s uniqueness in portraying nüxia, this thesis will look into the history of nüxia-related works of poetry and classical literature, and analyze Jin Yong’s nüxia in the context of the literary history.

Abstract This thesis aims at casting a new light on the classical Chinese fiction in Liao, Jing, and Yuan Dynasties. Through the acts of reading, criticising and reflecting on the thirty-eight fiction works in Liao, Jing, and Yuan Dynasties, this thesis re-examines the types of the fiction, explores its features, investigates the religious thought of the times, and analyzes the evolution of the story plots and writing techniques. With this multiple-perspective approach, the thesis gives not only a comprehensive understanding and subtle insight into the classical Chinese fiction in Liao, Jing, and Yuan Dynasties, but also makes up for a lack of research on the subject all through the ages. The thesis is divided into seven chapters. Chapter 1 outlines the aims and purposes of the research. Chapter 2 reviews the literature relating to the research subject. Chapter 3 discusses the types of fiction in Liao, Jing, and Yuan Dynasties. Chapter 4 investigates the features of the fiction and its characteristics of the times. Chapter 5 explores the concept and belief reflected in the fiction. Chapter 6 analyzes the relation between the fiction and other genres. Chapter 7 presents the conclusions. With its rich content, the classical Chinese fiction in Liao, Jing, and Yuan Dynasties has substantial historical value, which is a valuable source of the study of literature, folk culture and art history. In addition, the story themes and forms of the classical Chinese fiction in Liao, Jing, and Yuan Dynasties inherits the past, ushers in the future and makes a breakthrough in the history of Chinese fiction.

Jin Yong's chivalric fiction novels are able to stand up to the changes of the times, with the love from readers and the research from academic field. The reason is that the content addressed not only on the topics of chivalry, swords, gratitude and revenge; but more focus on the topic of Chinese inherent culture, savoir-faire of life, the way to get along with friends, the look of love and so on. The diet writing in the novels describes the overview of life in ancient world and this description throughout the storyline. By diet writing, the readers may understand that if you want to observe a person, you can view his or her diet except for words or things he/she says or does, which will provide the deeper understanding. In this study, we take Jin-Yong's novels as research object, and the ranges are the following fifteen works: Book and Sword、 Sword Stained with Royal Blood、 The Legend of the Condor Heroes、 The Return of the Condor Heroes、 Flying Fox of Snowy Mountain、 Blade-dance of the Two Lovers、 Swordswoman Riding West on White Horse、 Other Tales of the Flying Fox、 The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber、 A Deadly Secret、Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils、 Ode to Gallantry、 Sword of the Yue Maiden、 The Smiling, Proud Wanderer, and The Deer and the Cauldron, total in thirty-six volume. We select the version that published by Taiwan Yuan-Liou Publishing Corporation in 1986, which gains most reader’s favorite. In this study, we will discuss the writing journey of Jin-Yong and have the brief introduction about his chivalric fiction novels at the beginning. Then we make excerpt from the content of novels about the diet writing paragraph and make the classification. Finally, we aim to discuss the application of a variety of classification of diet writing within this study, and to divide into three sections: the analysis of food ingredients within the content of the novels, the art of writing about diet, and the topics of diet writing respectively. To sum up the above research of this study, we have the conclusion that the diet writing in Jin-Yong's chivalric fiction novels is indeed necessary. The part of diet writing in novels may be removed and the story may still be continued, but the content must be so pale and lackluster. At the end, the content of the story will only be endless subject matters such as: practice the martial arts, revenge, treasure hunting, and hegemony seeking. This kind of story is isolated from normal life and there is the big difference between the real lives, which is difficult to resonate with readers. Since the chivalric fiction novels and the diet writing are two across fields, and the research about this topic is relatively minority, the reference is insufficient; that is the inadequacy of this study.

The thesis is the first and second of " Taiwan Trilogy " , which is by Shi Shuqing’s historical novel into the twenty-first century, for the study of the text. " Walking through Luo Jin " is written in place images of Luo Jin/Lukang ; " The Dust Before the Wind " is written in place images of Whirl Lan/Hualien. Chapter II to IV re-examine disappearance and reappearance of the landscape in Luo Jin and Whirl Lan by the memory of " history ", the imaginary reality of " space ", and the metaphor of " body ", to imagine and memory the place. In Chapter II the place is an address to call memory, respectively by Luo Jin/Lukang during Qing Dynasty and Whirl Lan/Hualien in Japanese occupying period. Luo Jin where the birthplace of Shi Shuqing is , and the second for the short new dwelling place ─ Hualien, recovery and exhibit Shi Shuqing’s Taiwan colonial historical memory. Chapter III reappears the image of Taiwan''s mobile and remaining diverse ethnic groups from the landscape and the anti-landscape in the novel " real space " and " imaginative place " under two different regimes of Qing Dynasty and Japanese rule. Chapte IV uses the body as the space to observe a small description of rewriting a large history by Shiu Ching, the edge figure of society in " Walking through Luo Jin ", and the description of the Japanese woman , Yokoyama Yueji , to" marry " Taiwan''s aborigine in " The Dust Before the Wind ", subverts the discourse of colonial hegemony. The body image of fictional characters in Luo Jin/Whirl Lan transfers the core of the thesis ── Taiwan ancestors'' identity was established. Chapter V is the change and adjustment of local identity, and the reversal from the center to the edge . The " cross-border " escape shapes " cross-border the " sense of place. While looking for their homeland, the sense of place is the attribution of people''s emotion. Finally, Chapter VI summarizes the memory, imagination and identity of Shi Shuqing’s "Taiwan Trilogy" , to create and turn the center and the edge of Taiwan "local image" with her aggressive ambition.

abstract: ABSTRACT As referenced in Navajo ceremonial prayers and songs, "Saad bee hahoozhood jini," it began harmoniously with language. This dissertation examines and celebrates in new ways the meaning of language in Navajo literature. The first chapter is an introduction of this dissertation. I share my personal experiences with language, both English and Navajo, and how it has shaped me to be the person I am today as a Navajo speaker, student, educator, and professional. The second chapter contains an analysis and review of Western ideology of feminism and its place in Navajo society and a comparative study of several works written by Navajo authors, including Laura Tohe, Luci Tapahonso, and Nia Francisco, and how their creative works reflect the foundation of Navajo culture, Asdzaa Nadleehe, Changing Woman. The third chapter presents my own short fiction of Navajo characters living in today's society, a society that entails both positive and negative issues of Navajo life. These stories present realistic twenty-first century environments on the Navajo reservation. The fourth chapter consists of a short fiction written originally in the Navajo language. The story also represents the celebration of Navajo language as it thrives in today's time of tribal and cultural struggles. The sense of it being told in Navajo celebrates and preserves Navajo culture and language. The final chapter is the beginning of an oral narrative presented in written form, that of my grandmother's life story. This introduction of her story also is in itself a commemoration of language, oral Navajo language.

The special status of novels in Ming and Qing dynasties is that the authors extended the caring vision from the family and the country to the tiny individuals under a relatively conservative ideological environment to build a rich social life and imagination world.In the process of character behavior, the movement and static of sense organ' and the rationality of sense organ logic are the key for the author to make the character come to life. Odor, as the experience object of human senses, appeared repeatedly in novels of Ming and Qing dynasties, which showed the unique narrative function and radiates multiple levels of meaning. Studying the information conveyed by odor writing is helpful to broaden the practical significance and annotation dimension of novels. The paper enters the novels of Ming and Qing dynasties from the perspective of sensory experience and material culture, and focuses on aroma and odor to discuss the odor writing in the Jin Ping Mei and The Story of the Stone. From the perspectives of perception, discourse and symbol, the paper investigates the representation and semantic function of odor, and pays special attention to the relationship between odor and many topics in the novels, such as characters, space, identity, class, gender, culture, life and death, as well as the foundation of the novel keynote and the presentation of the theme. In addition, through the organization of perfume satchel, the paper pays attention to the reflection of real fragrance culture and fragrance economy between the performance and circulation of novel materials, and uses the concept of “sympathetic magic” proposed by Frazer to investigate the writing of body meaning in the smells of objects.
