The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization. The Foundation presents the famous New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and utilizes the proceeds from the Festival for year-round community development programs in the areas of education, economic development and culture. The Foundation also owns the broadcast license of radio station WWOZ 90.7. The Foundation is constantly seeking to expand its involvement with the local community. Thus, Mr. Don Marshall, Executive Director of the Foundation, created the Jazz & Heritage Gallery. My internship position was as the first Gallery Director for the newly created Jazz & Heritage Gallery. Throughout the course of my internship I successfully curated three exhibitions: Inspiration Exhibition, Femme Fest 2009, and Outside the Tent. I also managed the various business affairs of the Jazz & Heritage Gallery, including communications with artists and the public, and collaboration with numerous local organizations and seeking grants. This report includes the Foundation and Festival's history, organizational structure, current programming and my contributions to the Foundation. It also includes detailed recommendations based on the SWOT analysis of the Foundation as well as best practices suggestions.

Glasgow International Jazz Festival first took place in 1987 and has run every year since, making it the city's longest-running cultural event. One of the company's stated aims at its inception was to 'establish [Glasgow] as a major European jazz centre' (Williams, 1986b). Through a single, historical case study, the thesis attempts first to ascertain the extent to which this aim has been achieved, and second to determine the enabling and limiting factors acting upon the Festival in its attempts to effect change in its host city. The thesis finds that urban music festivals can, under the right circumstances, contribute to positive and lasting changes to the environment in which they exist. In the case of Glasgow Jazz Festival, this is evident in terms of both the physical infrastructure and educational opportunities which would be unlikely to exist today had the Festival not been their champion. A festival's ability to effect such change, however, can be severely curtailed by fluctuating levels of commitment from local and national authorities.

Umeå is a city that is known for its music scene. Credible bands and artists have consequently sprung out and put the city on the map for as long the authors of this paper can remember. The city has a specific image and this study seeks to shine a light on how this came to be. Has there been a conscious marketing strategy in order to gain the reputation that Umeå has, or is the city’s music scene so prominent that it speaks for itself? Data for the study were collected through conducting qualitative interviews with the producers of the two music festivals Umeå Open and Umeå International Jazz Festival. The results show that cultural visions and marketing are constantly interacting, but to the authors’ knowledge, no conscious decisions have previously been taken to market Umeå as a city of music. Still, with current acts like Deportees, David Sandström and Frida Hyvönen just to mention a few, the image of Umeå is more justified than ever.

The event tourism industry is one of the fastest growing tourism industries worldwide. One type of event that is growing immensely is festivals, especially music festivals such as the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. As a result of the fast growing pace of festivals, it has become crucial for a festival to sustain itself in the market place to stay competitive. The Cape Town International Jazz Festival (the Jazz Festival) is a fast growing music festival and hosts numerous well–known local and international jazz artists, as well as young up–and–coming artists. For this exciting Jazz Festival to keep growing, it needs to be sustainable. To achieve this, the organisers and managers of the Jazz Festival need to know what is important to the visitors of the Jazz Festival, so they can fulfil their needs. This in turn leads to satisfied visitors that will return to the Jazz Festival and keep the festival sustainable. Generally speaking, music festivals have a more professional management approach than other tourism events and thus are more likely to be more successful. Key Success Factors (KSFs) are a precondition for the success of any event and will influence the competitiveness of the event in the market place. It is imperative for organisers to identify the KSFs that are important to the visitors so as to provide them with a satisfactory experience. This will also assist in measuring the achievement of the event’s goals and objectives. The main purpose of this study was to determine the KSFs in managing the visitor experience at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. To reach this goal, the study is divided into two articles. Research for both articles was conducted at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival through distributing 400 questionnaires randomly throughout the two days of the festival, which was held on 3 and 4 April 2010. Article 1 is titled: “Key aspects for efficient and effective management of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival: a visitor’s perspective”. The main purpose of this article was to identify the Key Success Factors in managing the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, to determine what visitors deemed as important when attending the Jazz Festival. A factor analysis was done to achieve this goal. Results indicated that Hospitality Factors, Quality Venues, Information Dissemination, Marketing and Sales, and Value and Quality are the KSFs that are of importance when managing the Jazz Festival. The results of this article provided festival managers with valuable information when organising an event such as the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. Article 2 is titled: “The importance of different Key Success Factors to different target markets of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival based on travel motives”. The main purpose of this article was to determine whether different target markets that are visiting the Jazz Festival, deemed different KSFs as important, depending on their travel motives. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was done to determine if there were statistically significant differences between the three clusters and the KSFs that they deemed important. Results showed that the three clusters, namely, Escapists, Culture Seekers and Jazz Lovers, deemed different KSFs as important when they are visiting the Jazz Festival. The results of this article gave festival organisers and marketing managers insight as to which markets to focus scarce marketing resources on and which markets to keep growing, as they will sustain the festival in the long term. Therefore, this research revealed the KSFs that are of utmost importance when managing the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, and that these aspects differ for certain markets. Organisers therefore need to assess the KSFs to provide products that will satisfy the visitor in order for him/her to return each year and keep the festival competitive and sustainable.

This research seeks to build a socioanthropological reading about the choro in the city of Fortaleza, performing an ethnographic fieldwork with the practitioners of this musical genre, emphasizing the problematization of the ways in which musicians learn, execute and pass on techniques, repertoires, resources, Fundamentally, social relations. That is, the questions that guide the effort of this research revolve around the types, forms and processes of socio-cultural knowledge mobilized by the universe of these practitioners, from the symbolic conceptions on what is the cry, as their interpretative, sometimes divergent, aspects of the Place that occupies the tradition of choro in Brazilian popular music. I intend to carry out this research exploring the consequences of placing myself before this symbolic universe of the practitioners of choro as a native anthropologist, once being a musician of formation. Thus, ethnographic research will focus on observation and interlocution with my peers, with the universe of which I am also a practitioner.

We have chosen several types of festival (rock/pop, classic and jazz) in Scandinavian region (Sweden, Denmark and Finland), selected the biggest music events in each of the regions and marked the main factors affecting the revenue of the festival, why some of festivals occurring every year and some just have lack of visitors, as we suppose. Purpose is to define the main factors which influence revenues of festivals of classic, rock/pop and jazz genre. Methodology is to determine these factors. Quantitative analysis was used in order to collect necessary data. Organizers of festivals in Sweden, Finland and Denmark took part in the survey; they answered and gave information to main research questions, primary data. Secondary data was sourced from music events web-pages and articles. The collected data was analyzed by means of the statistical programs. We conclude that the research showed that the share of international artists, number of sponsors, the number of volunteers, the length of the music event, the music genre of a festival and government grants for the classic festivals affect festival revenues.

The Cultural heritage is now considered as a source of added value and, consequently, has become the subject of numerous digitization projects. These projects originate both from public research institutions and from private companies and they explicitly aim at the development of knowledge products for specific markets. However, despite guidelines found here and there, we still know almost nothing of the concrete ways in which what is presented as a new paradigm will be deployed. Does the enactment of techno-patrimonial valuation generate transformations in the definition of what counts as heritage? In the framework of Science and Technology Studies, my analysis is based on ethnographical work in the Montreux Jazz Digital Project led by the Lausanne Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL). This project is truly a laboratory for the enactment of the paradigm of techno-patrimonial valuation; its first aim is to impulse the development of knowledge products through the reformulation of the collection of audio-visual recordings produced in the framework of the Montreux Jazz Festival into a collection of 46 000 musical pieces which are deployed on screens from which their future is oriented. My analysis shows that this digitization process continues the long history of technologies of writing and accumulation. It renews more than it inaugurates the relationship between technology and heritage. The visibility of heritage and its possible transfer to technological realizations become the horizon of collective action. The modalities by which visibility is transferred, among which demonstration is central, act upon all the stages of the digitization process, even before the operations of numerical conservation. Finally, this study shows that patrimonial value may become wholly referred to its potential for innovation and visibility transfer; this development entails changes in our relationship to the past, which is reinterpreted in the light of a continuous technological present in which notions of conservation, transmission and memory are difficult to accommodate

ENGLISH ABSTRACT In 2002, Taichung Jazz Festival was still subordinated to one of the activities under Taichung Shining Cultural Season. In 2003, it stood alone and became the central activity after being received lots of approvals. Since it was held, the number of tourists taking part in the festival has increased from two million at first to millions of people now. The appearance of several relevant programs promotes surrounding industries as well. So far, Taichung Jazz Festival has become the well-known international program locally and it helps greatly in promoting the culture of Taichung. As the local, the researcher loves music and has high sensitivity of shapes, colors, plus qualities in his daily life. Therefore, huge echo and resonance emerged when he was exposed himself during the colorful and magnificent performance. The entire atmosphere was so artistic in aesthetics that it aroused the researcher’s inspiration for the creation. Based on the local cultural spirits as well as the trigger of personal emotions, it drove the researcher to explore into the festival. Via data arrangement, it assisted us to understand the presented historical clues of both jazz and western American music. The researcher also put chromatology into practice for the creation and as he did it, he used complex media materials, comprehended by analogy, made breakthrough of himself, and erected his own painting style. The current study is divided into six chapters: The first chapter deals with “Introduction”, which describes the materials and the motivation/purpose of choosing media resources. It also elaborates research methods, ranges, and the limitations. The second chapter illustrates “Discussion of Theoretical Frameworks and Literature”. Via the historical contexts of jazz, diverse presenting ways of music in art history, the application of optics through high technology, and the effectiveness of rational and emotional chromatics, the study had been done. Third Chapter concerns “The Idea of Creation”. It centers on the inspiration of music and the impact of Blues on teenagers as well as the rhythmical relationship between picture and music, and the displaying ways of coloring by the researcher. Fourth Chapter explains “Content and Form; Media Materials and Techniques”. The picture content sticks closely to the painting of the festival as the main theme. The form and the process were sorted and arranged in terms of creation, and they further gave detailed information. In the aspect of media materials and techniques, the creation is carried out by means of watercolors plus acrylic design. The fifth chapter depicts “The Analysis of Works”. When speaking of the works, the researcher uses time axis to list the history of jazz, starting from Blues to a series of colorfulness. Besides, he wrote reflections on the basis of each work he saw. The final chapter comes to my “Conclusion”. It stage-summarizes the outcomes of the study during these two years. The researcher shows a tremendous interest in this field, hoping to deepen more of his professional knowledge in the future. Keywords: jazz, blues, colors, lights

In recent years, the governments and private institutions promote a variety of festival activities with local characteristics to attract large numbers of tourists go to participate in. However, when a variety of festivals were organized at the same time, the organizers should focus on how to seize the tourists repeat visits intentions. First, should understand the views and feelings of the visitors that attended to the Jazz Festival. The past research about the Taichung Jazz Festival has few studies to exploring the atmosphere, emotional experience, perceived quality and satisfaction. This study will be investigate the visitors that participate the Taichung Jazz Festival and explore the atmosphere, emotional experience, perceived quality, satisfaction and revisit intention. Reference the past literature, this study organized the questionnaire. Them, use convenience sampling for the visitors that participation the Taichung Jazz Festival. In this survey, total have 520 valid questionnaires were collected. The analysis showed that the atmosphere theoretical dimensions composition by environmental factors, design factors, social factors and facilities attitude. Emotional experience composition by three dimensions, include joy, love and surprise. Revisit intention composition by recommend intention and revisit intention. In addition, the atmosphere positive effect on emotional experience and perceived quality, perceived quality negatively affect the emotional experience, emotional experience positive effects on satisfaction, perceived quality positive effects on satisfaction and satisfaction positive effects on revisit intention. According to description, the relationship about these constructs for the Jazz Festival visitors supports the claims of cognitive psychology, “stimulus – organism – response.” The findings provide the following suggestions for the Taichung government, including some suggests: (1) enhance visitors’ satisfaction about the Jazz Festival; (2) build the special atmosphere in Jazz Festival and enjoy the exotic atmosphere; (3) improve the overall quality of Jazz Festival; (4) create a unique emotional experience; (5) advertising promotions and publicity tactics.

Taichung Jazz Festival is an annual international arts and cultural representative festival in Taichung, about 90,000 participants in the 1st festival in 2003, until the 10th festival in 2012 named “Jazz the way you are”, already over 900,000 participants. In 2012 it is the first time to use rebuilt “Calligraphy Greenway Middle” and “CMP Block Museum of Arts”. This study in connection with participants of 2012 Taichung Jazz Festival, to discuss about the satisfaction of site of activities and related facilities, also to explore the satisfaction and difference of respondents’ personal property and experience, and compare participants’ satisfaction and difference from past years. We work through questionnaire, to measure satisfaction degree by Likert scale in five points scale. We stayed in the site several times during the activity, to survey by questionnaire to participants, sampling by convenience sampling. The result shows interviewees of 2012 are more satisfied with sound effect, site planning and leisure space, also satisfaction of past years are the same. It shows in activity of music, sound effect and site planning which interviewees care are highly recognized. Compared with satisfaction degree of past years, events including sound effect, stage decoration, leisure space, site planning, food vendor and arts market are with higher satisfaction degree. It shows organizer’s intention makes participants with greater recognition to activities in 2012. We also finds out that interviewees’ satisfaction degree of stage decoration and lighting is affected by participating days, gratification degree score is obviously higher for people who participated more days, it means people with more time and chance to understand stage decoration and lighting are more satisfied, therefore, they give positive recognition to the organizer. Staying time for 2012 activities of interviewees also influences satisfaction degree of sound effect and leisure space, interviewees participated for shorter time are with higher satisfaction degree because of not easy to find out defect of sound effect, it needs organizer to improve to make long-term participants give higher gratification degree. The first time Taichung Jazz Festival hold in Calligraphy Greenway Middle and CMP Block Museum of Arts in 2012 did gain high satisfaction from participants, they also expect activities in the future. For many years, this activity in Taichung is already expected every year by people who love Jazz, also food vendor and arts market increase attraction. Besides, guide instruction, mobile toilet and shading facilities need to be improved, we hope it will be better in the future, not only to provide opportunity to enjoy Jazz music, but to improve people’s attainment of Jazz music.

“Los sanfermines”, “Venice Carnival” and “Munich Oktoberfest”, such the words remind people thinking of Span, Italy and Germany. The City event has become the important element. It outstands the charactersitics of the city and expresses its image. These city events are usually taken place in a abstract space of the city, gathering people and businesses. Crang(2003)illustrated that the space is not a culture vessel, but constructed by the path, people and culture. Since Taichung city has held Taichung Jazz Festival for six years in Taiwan, it relats the space whith Jazz music. Consequently, the space was existed with music symbols. In addition, the event also attracts groups to come, conveying personal spirit, and fulfilling self-concept and behavior within space. It is necessary to understand how the event as a subject present in a city space. How do people perform their physical behavior in the event? How do people assocaite Taichung Jazz Festival with the city space through the symbol? Three dimentional space in The Production of Space metioned by Henri Lefebvre is adopted in this study. Taking 2008 Taichung Jazz Festival as an example to discuss its meaning between space and people. Besides, the concept of Body-Subject proposed by Mealau-Ponty is also adopted to explain the physical behavor in event . The last but not the least, the research explors the relationship between two dimentions for each within the space production.

Based on the conception of basic cognizance, this study explored the tourists’ experiences and impressions about the Taichung Jazz Festival from the point of activ-ities attendance, marketing strategy and marketing benefits, to find out the relation-ships among them. Upon this study, we may provide the useful relevant information to the organizers. Through the on-site questionary survey and random sampling, 400 pieces questionaries were distributed and 394 pieces effective questionaries were col-lected. Investigation data was analyzed by descriptive statistics to identify the responednts’ social status and their basic cognizance. Activity experience was distrib-uted to physical experience and environmental experience via reliability analysis and factor analysis. Marketing strategies were distributed to 5 aspects - promotion, activity benefit, price cost, event planning, and performing autivities. Marketing benefit was distributed to tourism image and revisit motivation. After that, ANOVA and regression model were used as the final proving methods to exam the hypotheses. The results show that the respondents’ perception of activity experience, market-ing strategy and marketing benefit were obviously affected by how long they have stayed, and how often they attended the activities during the festival. It is also signifi-cantly to extend the respondents’ activity experience and to emphasize the impression of activity benefit by attending other consumer activities beside the major activities. There are certain correlations among “festival planning” of city marketing strategy, activity experience and marketing benefit.

Many western countries organize arts and cultural festivals in order to enhance local areas’ and cities’ image while repelling the impact of globalization. Over the past decade, Taiwan’s cities and towns have coordinated the cultural policies to highlight local characteristics but political interests, economics and other considerations have influenced the develop of these dazzling festivals over these past ten years. Unfortunately, only a handful of these festivals in Taiwan are robust, that is having a clear focus; most festivals seem to be a mere formality that is having a distorted content. The author selected the Taichung Jazz Festival as a case to study because the researcher is a native of Taichung who loves of her community and has been an enthusiastic participant of the festival for many years. Additionally, the author believes that the Taichung Jazz Festival is a shining example of music festivals in Taiwan. This study will be undertaken through in-depth interviews with stakeholders of the Taichung Jazz Festival, and referenced to other cases: Chiayi International Band Festival and Edinburgh Festivals as well as supplemented by secondary data method to view the main elements of the Taichung Jazz Festival brand construction and marketing strategies in order to analyze and research the following: (A) To understand the Taichung Jazz Festival in the process of development planning and the actual implementation, including the support and obstacles encountered. (B) With a strict budget, how the organizers effectively allocate marketing communication tools, and integrate the resources of the stakeholders in order to achieve synergy. (C) In order to make the Taichung Jazz Festival even stronger, proposed developmental strategies and recommendations are offered based on the above analysis. The results show that: the Taichung Jazz Festival has steadily developed for nearly a decade because of the following reasons: (A) held at the same time and the same place for a nearly decade, equally accumulated cultural energy (B) great support from the government (C) the Taichung Jazz Festival has a strong festival theme, and international performing groups are readily receive recognition. However, the Taichung Jazz Festival still has weaknesses needing to overcome: (A) limited funding (B) lacking of media publicity (C) Jazz is a non-native cultural in Taiwan. In addition, the external environmental factors provide some opportunities and threats to the future development of the Taichung Jazz Festival, for example, more jazz festivals are held, so how to make the Taichung Jazz Festival stand out among the other festivals, as well as public sector should adjust policies in order to effect long-term planning of the Taichung Jazz Festival. The conclusion of the study is divided into two parts. First of all, the development proposals for the Taichung Jazz Festival SWOT analysis: (A) to develop festival tourism (B) to expand activity funds through corporate sponsorship and ticketing (C) to strengthen the festival publicity (D) adjust public sector policies (E) use music as a medium to achieve cross-regional exchanges (F) to strengthen the unique selling point of the Taichung Jazz Festival. The second part is to analyze and clarify the Taichung Jazz Festival in shaping the festival brand strategies to have the following five points: (A) to strengthen the festival theme (B) to improve international visibility (C) to expand the scale of the festival (D) to join the integrated marketing plan (E) to expand the target audience.

Abstract The The purpose of this study is to compare the differences of two music festivals (Taichung Jazz Festival and Chiayi International Band Festival) in their participants’ motivation, satisfaction and loyalty. Field survey and convention sampling were used. Valid samples of the two surveys are 804 and 335. Results indicated that participants were more motivated for “cultural exploration” in Chiayi International Band Festival attendance than Taichung Jazz Festival. However, the two factors of satisfaction in the two festivals were in the opposite direction. The approval score of the “satisfied of the activities’ services” was higher in Chiayi International Band Festival than in Taichung Jazz Festival. But the approval score of the “satisfied of the activities’ contents” was higher in Taichung Jazz Festival than in Chiayi International Band Festival. The loyalty scores were not significantly different in the two music festivals. The relationship of the four motivational factors and the two satisfaction factors of the two festivals were computed by cross-samples structural equation model and analyzed results of cross-validation. Further implications were discussed in this study.

Globalization and post-industrialism were the important factors in changing the production structure of urban economy in 1980s. The development of urban economy was used to rely on the traditional productive industry. But the anchor of development is substituted and now the development is relied on the soft power-culture and creativity. Meanwhile, international capital flows, technology development in transportation and communication and spatial structural reorganization accelerated the competition between cities. Arts and festivals were contemporarily regarded as the strategies to promote and identify a city. Also, these are the shortcut to show the image of city. During the period of leadership under Hu Zhi Qiang, culture was the core of city governance. Hu overturned the old image of erotic place. He claimed, “Culture contributes to the economic growth.” Nowadays, Taichung Jazz Music Festival does not only become one of the ways to promote the new image, but also the most significant arts festival. Since the jazz music festival plays a main role in advocating Taiwanese culture to the world, the Taichung city government harnesses the landscape development as the way to strengthen the cultural development. Furthermore, the government wants to make the jazz music festival as the specialty of Taichung. However, there are doubts: Does the jazz music festival and local development have a real relation? Or does it is just an illusion made by the governor? This study is aimed to find out the relation between Taichung Jazz Music Festival and local development. Since Taichung Jazz Music Festival is regarded as a famous domestic arts festival and an important administrative assessment to promote Taichung culture, I take the jazz music festival as the subject of this qualitative research. In order to examine how it is associated with Taichung’s local development, I am going to analyze the orientation of Taichung’s development and the city marketing strategy-culture. Moreover, landscapes, industries and local identity are other factors to be considered. According to fieldwork and analysis, the finding of this paper is that specializing and localizing Taichung Jazz Music Festival form the relation between local identity and industrial association in a shallow-plate shape. Although the festival improves the cultural environment, it still has a long way to go to be localized. The reason is that the government does not solve the difficulties in running the jazz music festival, so as to bring the citizens and music community in an opposite and unstable relationship. That is why the relation between local identity and industrial association is formed a shallow-plate shape. In addition, referring to the real landscape, it is obvious to find that the culture orientated strategy of urban development successfully transit the image of Taichung from erotic to cultural. Therefore, city allies with real estate again and use arts to enhance the urban development in Taichung.

This thesis, as a case study, aims at investigating the Jazz Festival of the Taichung City. Not only does it explore how this city uses a marketing strategy to promote the development and effectiveness of its tourism industry, but it also tries to internationalize the local Jazz Festival. It is hoped that the findings of this research could offer some suggestions for the organizer (the city government) to host future festival activities and promote city marketing plan. This research focuses on the following five types of interviewees: “the organizer (the city government),” “the performance orchestra,” “the live audience,” “the non-participants,” and “the periphery industry.” An in-depth qualitative analysis of the survey of these interviews is conducted. A sum of forty-nine questionnaires—seven qualitative and forty-two semi-open—are given to the interviewees. The content of the qualitative interview materials is analyzed thoroughly. Seven stages of city marketing are constructed in accordance with Kotler’s four major city marketing strategies and relevant literature reviews. They include: to censor, to ascertain the attraction factors, to distinguish primary competitors, to master the major trend and development, to find out the main problems, to establish vision and objective, and to formulate tactics. Next, the materials from the interviews are analyzed by means of the afore-mentioned five stages. Inductively, the Jazz Festival has a strong and positive effect on the Taichung City’s marketing and development of tourism. Four marketing strategies are found from the result of this research. First, regarding “the image marketing,” the distribution and promotion of the Jazz Festival in the Taichung City are by no means intensive. Whereas people usually would not associate the Jazz Festival with the Taichung City, they would easily associate the “Chun Na” with Kenting. Therefore, if the Taichung City wants to make the Jazz Festival as a theme festival and distinguish it as a major activity, its planning should gear towards the direction of the Jazz music itself. Second, as far as “the attraction marketing” is concerned, this research discovered that foreign tourists visit Taiwan not solely for attending the Jazz Festival since Jazz has been fully popularized in the Western countries for a long period of time. The findings of this research also suggest that to increase foreign visitors’ engagement and participation, the Jazz Festival should be paired up with the tourism itinerary to develop a complete package which is composed of relevant information including tourist spots, transportation linkage and routes, restaurants, and hotels. Third, referring to “the infrastructure marketing,” sufficient automobiles and motorcycles should be provided at times of the Jazz Festival. In addition, the participants being interviewed unanimously complained about insufficient parking spaces. Consequently, the staffs responsible for “the infrastructure marketing” should figure out how to solve the parking space problems. Finally, the marketing staffs should work closely with each other so as to develop the city “culturally, economically, and internationally,” a target proposed by the Taichung City Mayor Wu Chi-chang. The positioning of the Taichung city requires its government administration to plan to cultivate more spacious green areas, and develop arts, culture, as well as leisure districts. In so doing, it also can promote the city culture industry and tourism.

Jazz music is characterized as much by the intersection between erudite and popular culture as by the improvisation and mixture of rhythms. The evolution of this musical style has become important due to global dissemination and fusion with other styles like rock, funk and pop, allowing for a surge in new musical trends. This artistic and musical performance becomes important in the evolution of music, as with the appearance of new musicians and composers. Thus emerges the need to promote and spread the music and the artists involved in this art. It is through the use of mass media and recreational activities that Jazz is able to be present in our everyday lives. The historical process that contextualizes the forms of mass media comes from a sequence of multiple and transitional forms of visual communication, that are reflected themselves in the promotion of Jazz. The study of visual communication will allow an analysis of the several artistic and technical components that are important to the study of the visual language. It is also worth mentioning the importance of Jazz promoters in spreading and promoting this art. The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation has become an important intermediary by tracking and demonstrating the evolution of Jazz over three decades. "Jazz em Agosto" (Jazz In August) reveals its own identity as such, becoming the target for the study of visual communication. The study of visual communication will be the starting point for this investigation, focusing mainly on visual identity and communication made through posters.

Increasingly, many cities are involving festival activities as urban development policy. This is done to reduce uncertainty and identity crisis, which is caused by globalization. Because people believe festival activities through city in new image of culture and economic benefits, all represent potential sources of competitive advantage. However, when the world cities are competing for large-scale events, what kind of value the current government should be lead?To answer this question, this study framework of the destination image as the theoretical background, will focus on: what is the relationship of festival activities and destination image? Cognitive image and affective image on destination images due to effect, and the in Taichung Jazz Festival audience, the characteristics of festivals on the impact of the destination image. Based on the purpose, the organizing and marketing studies by the city, we used Taichung Jazz Festival audience for the study. We received 270 valid questionnaires during activities. SEM to analyze the empirical data on the hypothetical model of the degree of support, using statistical analysis of Amos. The main finding are:First, Festival on cognitive and affective destination image positively. Show festivals of cognitive and affective image element content changes, the destination image will also change. Festival cognitive image to create the best content on the impact of Taichung, festivals affective characteristics of the most appealing music festival attention. Studies that enhance a sense of program content and favorable image of the music festival, can help to improve the tourists satisfaction of Taichung Jazz Festival. Second, Festival cognitive image of a beneficial effect of emotional image. Of previous studies on cognitive overthrow image effects on the affective relationship between one-way hypothesis. Composition of the festival highlights the value of the underlying desire (cognitive, thinking, memory, experience), so in the cognitive level, the growth of the festival must be the focus placed on the quality of personal experience and the quality performance of the combination of music festival. In the emotional level, it is necessary to meet the tourists on the preferences of the festival to relax the requirements.Third, Festival cognitive and affective image as the intermediary role of destination images, showing the whole surface: the spirit of place and individual areas: activities closely between the cognitive and affective individual ternary relations. Festival more cognitive than affective highlight the impact on destination image. The results showed that cognitive effects festival program content to the largest, followed by is the environment, recreational activities, local characteristics. Future, the producer’s vision and creation of art is still the key to a sustainable festival. They check the quality of content, into new elements for the show, show music festival in the city's unique character.

Most previous academic studies undertaken on music festivals in South Africa have been largely done through economic lenses. They have dealt with growing the festival; financial benefits for the festival organisers; management styles and models of festivals. This research interrogates the impact of music festivals on the participating artists’ social, creative, intellectual and sustainable growth. The research studied these aspects through the analysis of the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival, which in 2010 was celebrating its diamond jubilee, and following six musicians who have participated in the festivals at different levels. Being a jazz artist myself, I became interested in what constitutes the development of a musician who participates in a jazz festival. This research seeks to depart from the socio-economic based studies by analysing the role of the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival in the lives of six South African jazz musicians and the perceived benefits. It also draws on a wide range of literature that covers issues ranging from socio-political scenarios to arts and culture policies from around the 1920s to the present day. What the research found is that music festivals had varying impact on developmental bands in comparison to established bands and musicians. It also looked at the effectiveness of arts and culture policies, legislations and their implementation in the South African music industry. Due to the width and breath of this research topic it must be stated that there are other areas that the research did not delve into due to the researcher’s limited tools - such as the psychological analysis capacity.

Jazz, a style of music which was submerged by pop, rock, and classical music for long in Taiwan, has become the emphasis of Taichung Jazz Festival since 2005. This music festival, among the various local ones in Taiwan, is one of the small amounts of the music festivals held by the Government more than five years. What is the reason that the Government prefers jazz? Is the music festival a unidirectional policy, i.e., a one-way policy from the authorities to the citizenry, or a grassroots festival which is developed spontaneously by the folks? How does Taichung City Cultural Affairs Bureau “define” jazz and then “construct” the relationship between jazz and Taichung City from the definition of jazz? There are questions held up inevitably: who are concerned for jazz? Who take parts in the city festival? Who share the culture of the city? Through the preparation of the festival held by Cultural Affairs Bureau and the images of activity appearing in the public, we hereby research into the motive behind the whole process of the preparation and into the social class aroused intentionally by the Bureau. From the arrangements for the event, the distribution of social resources involved, to the eventual presentation, we realize, in Bourdieu’s Cultural Sociology, the manner of the mutual influence between the social class and the construction of city space. Thus we re-analyze the relationship between Jazz Festival and the space construction of Taichung City. Taichung City has implemented the program of Global City Imagineering for long, which leads to that the significances of labor force reproduction and of heterotopias that Jazz Festival works as has been ignored in the festival. Therefore, the festival has become a means that Taichung City builds the symbolic capital. We have discovered from this research that the development of jazz and the mode of the domestic consumption of music are highly relevant to the demand for the consumption of music of the folk. The identification that Taichung Jazz Festival tries to form and the fictitious scene of the city that set up temporarily, however, depart from its civics’ daily living. The citizens encounter a problem that their rights of collective consumption are ignored by the policy, and they have to achieve the need for recreation through the individual informal consumptions. Meanwhile, Taichung City reveals its feature of a speculative city, the false financial expansion.

With the policies that the CCA and Tourism Bureau promote, the local industry of Taiwan and each region hold many kinds of unique festival activities; therefore, the major topic of the current study was festivals. The researcher took Taichung Jazz Festival as a study case because it’s first time to establish a system of volunteers in 2013. In order to collect the system of volunteers’ data on Taichung Jazz Festival in 2013, the research treatments of the study were participant observation and focus groups. There were three research questions. (1) Does the system of volunteers bring some affects to Taichung Jazz Festival in 2013? (2) If it is possible to integrate the concept of internal marketing into the system of volunteers, will the concept make the system of volunteers bring the better marketing effect on the marketing plan of Taichung Jazz Festival? (3) Does the system of volunteers have its value to exist when it becomes an idea for the marketing plan of festivals? The study took the internal marketing as its major research point. The three main findings are included as follows. Firstly, volunteers had a certain degree of recognition from their experience that participated on Taichung Jazz Festival. Before they recruited by sponsors and undertakers, they valuated their own ability to know whether they can enjoy the group or not by taking the given jobs. Secondly, when the internal marketing was used on the system of volunteers, it had the stages of influence to affect volunteers’ degree of recognition on this festival gradually. In additions, it also made volunteers to market the festival actively. Such stages of influence included volunteer-recruiting, volunteer-training, work arrangements, and the interactive relationship between volunteers and the activity undertakers. Thirdly, in the external marketing of the festival perspective, the activity undertakers took the volunteers as the deeply involved audiences and got some feedback and suggestions from the volunteers. Due to this, the study found that volunteers’ degree of recognition on this festival is deep and that made them become a supervisor who were willing to be the assistants of the festival in the future. Three suggestions of the current were as follows. First of all, sponsors and undertakers needed to contact and work together with volunteers closely. Then, sponsors and undertakers needed to know and tried to follow the suggestions from the volunteers. For example, arranging volunteers’ jobs by their specialty and telling them the significance of the festival and their job in the training courses. Finally, sponsors and undertakers needed to take the suggestions from the volunteers which were related marketing festival and tried to use them to promote the festivals.

Festival events are the cultural activities people feel the most about. Council for Cultural Affairs started assisting every city to hold “National Arts Festival” and”International Minor Performances” since 1994. Each city holds international cultural arts festival according to “One Festival Every Month” project promoted by Tourism Bureau on 2001, which enhanced every city to market local industries by giving festival activities, and developed different styles of events focus on local features. Taichung City, which sees “culture, economy and internationalism” as the goal of its city plan, choose “Jazz” to be the theme of the arts agenda, in hope to connect and interact with the whole world through Jazz Festival, which combines arts education with performance to wake up local jazz musicians and the prospective audience. However, jazz is not originated from Taichung, therefore it’s indeed a challenge to stimulate local tourism business by holding Taichung Jazz Festival at the same time infuse with international savor. The object of this research is to understand a festival event based on an unoriginal culture, and to achieve its final goal by holding the cultural events, which combine with local industries and develop local cultural features, in a long run, connect with the entire world. This research help understand the organizing process and current situation of Taichung Jazz Festival through the cross-integration of the in-depth interviews and secondary data analysis of qualitative studies. Also, the suggestions of future activities are further discussed. The research shows that Taichung Jazz Festival expands its scale year by year and gradually develops its own pattern. However, the arena seems to be unable to load current event-goers and massive traffic flow, and the linking with local industries is not strong enough. Besides, there is the deficiency of localization, as well as the expense resource and media promotion. One of the biggest problems of future Taichung Jazz Festival is the lack of sustainable development mechanism. Accordingly, the suggestions for the future development of Taichung Jazz Festival are: 1. to make a perfect arena operation plan, 2. to add more traits of the events to advertise the festival, 3. to expand characters of local cultural agenda, 4. to build sustainable development mechanism.

The Taichung Jazz Festival has been one of the most important annual events held in Taichung City since 2003. The number of tourists and the tourism business opportunities brought by the events and have been increasing year by year. Since 2015, more than one million visitors have participated. In general, assessments of large-scale activities often use questionnaires or on-site surveys to obtain information such as Participant satisfaction or number of people. However, along with the popularization of Internet platforms and smart phones, people often spontaneously provide some coordinates. The message is called Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI). For example, when many people go to attractive spots, they check in and send out text to the place (or food, landscape, etc.) and share positive or negative opinions. Based on this, this study will collect public comments on the social platform (Facebook) during the past five years during the Jazz Festival, targeting open-air concerts, lectures, youth orchestra training, competitions, parades, food stalls, and ideas at the event, Markets, etc., analyze the specific suggestions and satisfaction of Participant, and compare and analyze with the satisfaction of the official traditional questionnaire survey. This research uses the API provided by Facebook and the web crawler to download a total of 46,260 messages from the public during the event, and then uses the Chinese word segmentation and keywords as a reference for visitors to the Jazz Festival. Perform semantic analysis and statistical analysis: I. Activity suggestions: Utilizing the semantic analysis to extract the views and suggestions of Participant for the activities; Second, in the aspect of satisfaction: Utilizing the semantic analysis to count the number of activity comments and the popularity of the activity. This study combines geographic information, action intelligence devices, and big data exploration models to construct unstructured information analysis methods and spatial distribution cluster analysis models, and from the perspective of the masses to understand the public (Participant) intuitive feelings for jazz festivals. As a pilot model for future big data mining and semantic analysis of festival activities, the researchers will provide a practical reference for the management and decision making of festival activities.

The coming of the age of globalization has gone beyond the concepts of territories and nations. “National competitiveness” has gradually been replaced by “urban competitiveness”. Cities are aggressive in building their local features, in hopes of re-creating their value through inspiration of cultures and uniqueness of local features. To govern a city successfully, it is essential to develop a specific cultural image of the city by integrating local resources and getting local residents’ high recognition and actual participation. Among all the cultural items, festivals are the one which people can usually experience directly and can bring significant economic effects. And local residents’ perception of impact of a festival and their attitude toward development are the key factors influencing whether the festival can be held successfully and developed sustainably. This study chose the Taichung Jazz Festival for case study. The Taichung City Government has held this festival every year for the last 13 years. Last year, in 2015, the festival was combined with the Taichung Arts Festival and held in a grander way. However, local residents had different opinions on this policy change which was based on a good intention and some voices were even against this change. In other words, local residents'' perception of impact and attitude toward development regarding the Jazz Festival were probably not consistent with the Taichung City Government''s policy considerations and management plan. Therefore, this study aimed to find out local residents'' perception of impact regarding the Jazz Festival through in-depth interviews, to construct their perception of the overall benefits of the Jazz Festival and explore their attitude toward development of the Jazz Festival based on the social exchange theory, and to examine whether the City Government''s plan and management of the Jazz Festival were accepted by local residents. The major findings of this study include: (1) local residents could indeed perceive the impact caused by the festival; (2) most local residents'' response to the negative impact was to accept it passively, self-adjustment, or tolerating it; (3) local residents perceived more advantages than disadvantages in relation to the overall benefits of the Jazz Festival; (3) local residents of different social statuses or backgrounds had different perception of the overall benefits of the Jazz Festival; (4) most local residents believed that the profit distribution of the Jazz Festival was unfair as residents of more resources and power received relatively more; (5) most local residents supported the idea of continuously developing the Jazz Festival in the same location; (6) the City Government agency in charge of the Jazz Festival didn’t have a good negotiation mechanism with local residents during the planning and implementation phases; and (7) most local residents were satisfied with the City Government agency’s performance in the management of the Jazz Festival or at least found it acceptable, while they all consistently hoped that the agency can do better in the future.

“The City of Jazz,” broadening the global views of her citizens and introducing international performances to the city, is one of the key policies of Taichung City Government, with cultural activities, to market Taichung city. The policy can expand its linkage with the local instruments industry. Also “Taichung Jazz Festival” is expected to be the cultural assets. Whether a public issue like this is able to construct the civic identity is the core topic of the study. The research aims to explore “Taichung Jazz Festival”, by which further examines the correlation among event marketing, civic identity and city image. The research methods include literature review, questionnaire and quantitative analysis. The questionnaire respondents are citizens of Taichung City who are over sixteen years old. Of 476 valid questionnaires are analyzed by the researcher with descriptive statistics, factor analysis, independent sample test, ANOVA, and Pearson’s correlation to acquire the research results. The results of this research are described as follows. For citizens of different backgrounds, the hypothesis that their “ Taichung city image” shows significant differences is partly valid, and so is that of their identification with “Taichung Jazz Festival” showing significant differences. Besides, part of the hypothesis that the understanding of her citizens for the event marketing of “Taichung Jazz Festival” shows significant differences is also valid. The more impressive the city image of “The City of Jazz” of her citizens is; the more identification with “Taichung Jazz Festival” is. Also, the more the citizens know about the event marketing for “Taichung Jazz Festival”; the more they identify with the event. Finally, there is a positive correlation between the event marketing of “Taichung Jazz Festival” and Taichung city image of “the City of Jazz.” In addition to elaborating the research purpose, the research also serves as one of the policy analyses for the prospective promotion of “Taichung Jazz Festival” as well.

The following research will develop around the idea that Jazz, specifically observed in Portugal, consisted in a Cultural Movement impacting the country culturaly, socialy and politicaly on very significant historical moments. Hence it is intended a demonstration on how this movement, asserting itself progressively since the decades preceding the revolution of 1974 until the 1st Jazz Festival International in 1971, came to influence the openness, restructuring and definition of a democratic public sphere, thus becoming an object of study for consideration while reflecting about the preparation of Portuguese Democracy. In order to provide proper comprehension on some of its theorical elements, the study will firstly adress the concept of Public Sphere. Furthermore after implementing an historical approach to the decades that make up the route of Jazz in Portugal, the research will dwell into the observation and development of the phenomena composing the Cascais Jazz Festival in 1971. The investigation will finally meet its purpose through a conclusive reflection about the facts and ideas put into consideration and proof.

Ever since the 9/11 terrorist attack in the United States in 2001, the international community has formally entered the era of war against terrorism. As international situation evolves and technology advances, the harm of terrorism continues to broaden and its weaponry and strategy are increasingly sophisticated, making it exceedingly hard to defend against. The rise and expansion of the Islamic State (ISIS) in 2014 was a major setback in the war against terrorism. Its cruel and bloody killings brought about global condemnation. However, ISIS’s aggression and ambition did not stop there, but instead set its target at organizing global terrorist attacks and declare war against the international community, in which Taiwan is also among its target of attack. Furthermore, since the world economy has been increasingly globalized, cities gradually become the focal point of competitiveness. The economic competition between nations turns into competition among cities. Due to cities’ immense power, the topic of governing and developing cities becomes the new prominent subject. Nations spare no effort to voice for their cities to stand on the international stage and connect with the world. It is expected that both government and civilian will push for organizing major events in the future. However, major events have strong magnetic effect and the density of population goes up and turnover rate accelerates during the length of these events. The gathering of large crowd is a great challenge to the security of cities. If terrorist attack occurs due to carelessness, it will bring great harm to people’s lives and properties, as well as the image of the city. The thesis uses the declaration of terrorist attack by the Islamic State to Taiwan as setting and selects the Taichung Jazz Festival, an iconic local major event in Taichung, as an example. Basing the research on document analysis, collecting large sum of terrorism, counter-terrorism strategy, major event security management theory, and related theses, publications, periodicals of counter-terrorist security management practices by the United States and European nations. Supplemented by interviews with the event organizer, security management agencies, and academic experts’ opinions in order to establish and deploy counter-terrorist securitymanagementstrategy for the Taichung Jazz Festival in response to the challenge of terrorism. The thesis finds that counter-terrorist security management of major city events can be established, strategized, and deployed on four stages: prevention, preparation, reaction, and restoration. Highest standard and impeccable mentality should be applied to the display of specific strategies. The highest security level detail in the nation should be consulted and plan ahead to provide event organizers and decision makers different perspectives. Finally, the thesis offers recommendations and countermeasures for future major city events in the hope of not only having an impeccable counter-terrorist security deployment for the Taichung Jazz Festival, but a soundly developed security managementsystem for major events in response to an increasingly arduous terrorism challenge.

This study uses the Taichung Jazz Festival as a case study to explore the impact of cities on organizing large-scale festivals for city marketing effectiveness and city brand building. It is hoped that the result can provide some suggestions for organizers to held festive activities in the future. By using the reference for planning marketing city and brand building. This study aimed at the “government organizers”, “industry professionals”, “event vendors”, “music culture promoters”, “event performers” and “senior music fans” as the objects of study. By doing depth interviews and qualitative analysis respectively, a total of 8 qualitative questionnaires were interviewed. The idea of constructing with a city brand can be divided into two points. First, the city itself has certain cultural characteristics and can easily be identified. Second, the related industries of urban brands and cities are connected, and it is easy for people to have connections. The Taichung Jazz Festival which has been consecutively held for fifteen years. Whether there has been any connection with related industries and it has become a city brand in Taichung, which has achieved the benefits of marketing in Taichung? Research and analysis results show that jazz music performance and music culture promotion in Taichung City is not popular enough, and the Jazz Festival has created a gap between the process of building a brand and the development of related industries, which has led to an inability to effectively enhance the connection between Taichung City and jazz music. Therefore, if Taichung City wants to adopt jazz music as a city with jazz music as a distinct cultural feature, it must first form a jazz music environment, including performers, performance atmosphere, and audiences. This study suggests that we should begin with the three basic levels of performers, performance atmosphere and audiences. We must incorporate jazz music teaching programs into school education to cultivate local jazz musicians. The government will transform unused space into the performance space and provides space for jazz musicians to perform in the field. With performances, you can cultivate audiences who love jazz music, gradually expand jazz music to street corner space, and perform jazz music at every place. The impromptu performances will make it easier and more convenient for the audience to enjoy the jazz music channels. It will trigger more people interested in jazz music to study and enjoy. The jazz music culture in Taichung will be gradually be shaped and create its own brand. The cultural city brand promotes the development of the related industries in the city and becomes a major selling point for city marketing. It also enhances the tourism benefits of the city.

This master’s thesis is a case study that uses a sociological perspective to seek the reasons of the persistent conflict between the Uzeste Musical festival and a village of 450 inhabitants going by the same name, and last for the past 35 years. Based on a fieldwork, it combines an ethnographical approach and semi-structured interviews within this southwest village of France. The analysis mixes in vivo an ethnographical description of the conflict to different theoretical elements. The field and the practical sense theory of Bourdieu, in addition to the Boltanski & Thévenot’s pragmatic theory will help us understand the true implication of this problematic cohabitation. Through discussions with the different actors of the conflict rise the very reasons why this jazz festival seems foreign to the structures and the culture of the village, thus not being accepted by its inhabitants. Furthermore, it demonstrates the way the actors will try to redefine the conflict itself with familiar terms, even thought the latter seems unsustainable. This position allows them to put the conflict into perspective like it was always a part of the village’s history, thus redefining a way to cope with this problematic cohabitation.
