This dissertation concerns the reproduction and negotiation of Japanese national identity at the intersection between sports, media, and globalization. The research includes the analysis of newspaper coverage of the most significant sporting events in recent Japanese history, including the 2014 Koshien National High School Baseball Championships, the awarding of the People’s Honor Award, the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, wrestler Hakuho’s record breaking victories in the sumo ring, and the bidding process for the 2020 Olympic Games. 2054 Japanese language articles were examined by thematic analysis in order to identify the extent to which established themes of “Japaneseness” were reproduced or renegotiated in the coverage. The research contributes to a broader understanding of national identity negotiation by illustrating the manner in which established symbolic boundaries are reproduced in service of the nation, particularly via mass media. Furthermore, the manner in which change is negotiated through processes of assimilation and rejection was considered through the lens of hybridity theory.

"The Living Artist" describes Haruhisa Handa's diverse activities in the arts as analyzed by himself. He investigates why he ventured out to learn both western and eastern styles of art, and researches what it is that truly motivates him to take on such challenging activities. In this thesis, Handa begins with recollections and an evaluation of his own life. At present he is Involved In art from a wide variety of periods and cultures Including calligraphy, painting, tea ceremony, and Noh drama from Japanese culture, oil painting, composition, classical music and ballet from western culture as well as classical Chinese opera. Throughout he questions what It is that drives him into each of these areas, and returns to his elementary and junior high school days to probe for an answer. As he discusses his own history from his childhood to the present, he also analyses his own trail as a man of religion, which underpins all of his artistic ventures. After reflecting on the past, he moves through to the present, and evaluates the Influence of the Shinto religion on his artistic activities. He seeks to justify the reasons for the diverse path he has followed as both a businessman and as an artist through his understanding of Shintoism, a religion that is deeply rooted In the foundation of Japanese culture. He continues his narrative from various points of view, and reveals the methodology through which he engages in his artistic activities as well as In his primary role as a successful businessman. In particular, he evaluates his activities as a businessman and draws comparisons to his business peers and their involvement In the arts. Throughout the study Haruhisa Handa's arts practice is evidenced in his supplementary package of videos, COs and monographs that are appended to this work. Not all of Handa's activities in the arts are traditional performances or paintings; many of his projects creatively integrate religion and business. Indeed, all aspects of his life are tied together by one common factor. In this study he identifies what It is that motivates his wide-ranging artistic ventures, and in so doing reveals a unique approach to arts participation and patronage.

Анотація:

Juvenile delinquency in Japan has steadily declined since World War Ⅱ. This decline is true for both male and female juveniles, though some noticeable variations exist between the genders. Given this overall steady decline, this paper attempted to examine what factors contributed to the lowering of juvenile delinquency rates. When it comes to gender differences, this paper attempted to determine whether the factors related to male juvenile delinquency are the same factors related to female juvenile delinquency. Theories from the United States and other western countries that predict crime and delinquency were reviewed. Guided by this review, this paper constructed dependent variables (e.g., juvenile delinquency rates of total, males, and females) collected from the White Paper on Crime by the Ministry of Justice. The analysis included independent variables derived from Macro Strain Theory (MST) (e.g., unemployment aged 15-19, divorce rate, enrollment to university), Routine Activity Theory (RAT) (e.g., cellular phone penetration rate, student-teacher ratio, police strength) and Deterrence Theory (e.g., incarceration, revision of Juvenile Act in 2000). Graphical portrayal, descriptive analysis, bivariate correlations, and multiple regression analysis using ARIMA (autoregressive integrated moving average) techniques were performed. At the bivariate level of analysis, the results indicated that unemployment is significantly associated with the total and the male juvenile delinquency, while it is not significantly associated with the female juvenile delinquency. Across genders, divorce rate and cellular phone penetration predict juvenile delinquency significantly. However, at the multivariate level of analysis, the divorce rate was found a significant effect on female juvenile delinquency only when independent variables were limited to MST variables. The implications of the findings for juvenile justice are (1) providing support for unemployed youths, (2) providing support to divorced families and (3) educating youths and their families on the proper use of cellular phones. Limitations of the data were also addressed.

Japan has been seen as a safe country in the world. Previous studies that show societal and cultural characteristics have contributed to the comparative low crime rates. Also, the roles of criminal justice system are critical. Today, Japanese society favors a more punitive approach towards offenders. The present study examined which variables of economic factors, socio-structural factors, and deterrence factors affected Japanese crime rates (i.e., homicide, robbery, and larceny), testing for Institutional anomie theory (IAT) and deterrence theory. I conducted visual examination of co-variation with Z-scores and an ARIMA (autoregressive integrated moving average), with Japanese governmental data from 1955 to 2012. The results indicated homicide rates were explained by neither IAT nor deterrence variables. Robbery rates were significantly related with unemployment rates and divorce rates, supporting IAT. Larceny rates were strongly associated with clearance rates, giving support to deterrence theory. Based on the results, practical implications and limitations were discussed.

The current study examined the social factors that have influenced the rising female incarceration rates in Japan between 1970 and 2011, based on two theoretical explanations: Women's behavioral change thesis (women's liberation thesis and economic marginalization thesis), and policy change thesis (arrest and prosecutorial effect). Based on the secondary data obtained from the Japanese government's statistics, time series analysis was conducted. The results didn't support liberation thesis, whereas economic marginalization thesis and policy change thesis (prosecutorial effect) were supported to explain the rising female incarceration rate for special law crimes in Japan. On the other hand, two general indicators of ecoomic and political conditions in Japan had strong impact on the female incarceration rate for both penal code and special law crimes. Implications were discussed, basing on the cultural backgrounds of gender stratification, criminal justice processing and the broader economic and political conditions in Japan.

This thesis attempts to find ways in which the designs of single family residential units can be changed to increase the happiness and comfort of residents. Houses are humans' fundamental locations to start and end their days. They are places to grow a family's health and safety. By looking at a failed attempt at residential housing (Pruitt-Igoe), this thesis will try to gain insight about what design aspects are not effective. No one want the same result as what was created at Pruitt-Igoe. The main thrust of the research presented in this thesis was captured by use of a survey. The questions was designed using three (3) categories with which Happy Index uses to measure happiness, life satisfaction, life expectancy, and ecological footprint (Abdallah, Michaelson, Marks, & Steuer, 2009). The survey was given to both Japanese and American people. Japan makes us think of a very different culture and efficient use of limited space. Conducting a survey on happiness, greenery, comfort, lighting, stress, community interactions, and satisfaction of homes with total of one hundred twenty one (121) Japanese and American participants shed some light on what the most important design aspects are to be happy. For most of the participants, family makes up a huge part of their happiness. For this reason, single family homes need to be designed for more easy interaction with family members. Even with the difference of cultures, the definition of happiness is the same, but American people comment more positively in regard to comfort, satisfaction and happiness in their current homes.

Анотація:

The main purpose of the current study is to evaluate the deterrent effects of the two juvenile law revisions in Japan. The time series data of delinquency rates in Japan (1965-2014) are investigated through auto-regressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) modeling. Results demonstrates that there are insignificant deterrent effects of the revisions on the whole juvenile delinquencies, repeat offenses, or murder cases, after controlling for serial dependency and other factors. In terms of practical implications, these results suggest that the public and politicians should acknowledge that harsher policies are less likely to deter juvenile delinquency. While the current macro-level analysis is informative in that it provides a big picture of delinquency in a society, further research efforts are needed to explain why the law revisions failed to deter juvenile delinquency.

This research will focus on the issue of power and gender in the language of Japanese comics (manga). Comics in Japan are enormously popular and are read by a wide audience. They are aimed at specific audiences and it is my argument that the language of manga helps to reinforce certain social stereotypes - particularly the inferiority of women and the dominance of males. The language of children's manga will be analyzed using the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), which concerns itself with the relation between ideology and power in discourse. The analysis will be at various levels including lexica-semantic, pragmatic, textual and ideological. The texts to be analyzed will be Japanese manga in the original Japanese language. Manga aimed at specific audiences, i.e. young boys and girls, will be analyzed to determine the presence of male-dominant ideology in the text. I argue that an interpretation of the text under the framework of GOA supports the hypothesis that the ideology of male dominance is present in manga and that it has become normalized in Japan.

In this thesis, I examine the relationship between folk tales and Japanese animation, or anime. In spite of the popular association between animation and adolescence, animated television series and films have a dynamic and compelling relationship with various age groups and nationalities. Additionally, anime and animation draw liberally from a number of folk tale traditions. Consequently, in this essay, anime is understood as a global phenomenon that draws on international cultural elements and is consumed in several international markets. Before entering an analysis of the use of folk tales in anime, a history of animation and the place of anime within a Japanese and global matrix is provided. This history not only looks at the development of anime, its connection to Western cinema and animation studios, but also its connection to other Japanese artistic genres, such as manga. Once this foundation is established, it is possible to connect anime with folk tale scholarship in chapter two. This chapter explores this connection in three ways, namely similar content, structure and function. Chapter three builds on the analysis in the preceding chapter and examines the ways anime, as a visual, televised, episodic series, builds on and alters the folk tale tradition. This is primarily explored through the use of visual storytelling techniques and the proliferation of advanced technology. Additionally, this chapter addresses a major point made against the use of folk tales in mass media, specifically the loss of variation. The final chapter concludes and summarizes the ideas, and analysis throughout the thesis. It is in this final chapter that suggestions for further research can be found. This thesis looks not only at the use of folk tales and folk tale characteristics in new media, such as anime, but how these new media contribute to and help to pass on folk tale traditions. Ultimately, this paper suggests anime is an example of a contemporary form of tale telling, which draws on traditional elements as well as catering to a contemporary audience.

Australia-Japan communication is at a crossroads. The relationship between the two cultures is being strained not necessarily by language barriers or patterns of behavior, but by the disparate ends of stakeholders, who include all Australians, Japanese and citizens of other nations. There exist obvious imbalances among: 1. Australian foreign policy elites and the public. 2. Specialists in government, business and academia who cannot see past their own disciplines. The situation which has emerged in the late 1980s, in which Australia-Japan relations are under serious strain, results from a failure to account for the complexity of the intercultural relationship and its stakeholders. The phenomenon is not new. Relations between Australia and Japan have been overshadowed by a disparity of ends from the time the two nations became conscious of each other in world affairs. Required is a theoretical approach which takes into account the complexity of the international and intercultural relationship. Theory needs to address the relationship in its totality, rather than focus on particular specialist areas, as happens at present. Systems thinking provides the underpinning for a holistic approach required to facilitate communication between cultures and stakeholders toward a mutually beneficial relationship. Using processes and models to arrive at a common ground'', a systems approach would address the ends Australia and Japan need to reach to survive. An important part of achieving these ends is a constant process of interaction and feedback which may be planned for. Ways of keeping stakeholders in touch with developments in the intercultural relationship and encouraging their active participation need to be part of the planner's brief. For the researcher, methodology must take into account not only cultural differences, but the many individual and environmental factors which are apt to affect the Australia-Japan relationship.

Prior to 1994 Japan limited its import of Australian mangoes through quarantine restrictions. However, because of the recent lifting of these restrictions, new opportunities for the export of Australian mangoes to Japan have emerged. Thus it is important for prospective mango exporters to have access to research in this area. To date, little research has been done on the opportunities for the export of mangoes to Japan. Such research would include looking at distribution channels in Japan for imported new fruit because these distribution channels have been regarded as the major obstacles to the success of foreign companies exporting to Japan (Shimaguchi & Lazer 1979; Czinkota 1985; Terstra & Sarathy 1991; Jain 1993; Keegan 1989). This thesis has focused on two areas: examining market opportunities for Australian mangoes in Japan and examining distribution channels for imported new fresh fruit in Japan. Therefore two research problems (RP) present themselves: RP I: What are the market opportunities for Australian mangoes in Japan, based on consumer research? RP 2: What distribution channels in Japan could be considered for Australian mangoes? For RP 1, the literature review in chapter 2 examined the Australian mango industry, the fresh fruit market in Japan, Japanese consumer preferences for fruit, change in the Japanese diet, marketing theory, and consumer research about mangoes in Australia. Gaps in the literature were then identified and three research issues (RI) developed: RI I: How do Japanese consumers view the taste and other characteristics of mangoes? RI 2: What are the factors affecting the popularisation of new and foreign fruit such as mangoes, in Japan? RI 3: What are the possible bases for segmentation of the market for new and foreign fruit such as mangoes, in Japan? Next, the literature related to the nature of a distribution channel system, the distribution system in Japan, and distribution channels available for fresh fruit in Japan was examined. Gaps in the literature were identified and two research issues relevant to RP 2 were developed: RI 4: What are the available distribution channels for imported new and foreign, fresh fruit? RI 5: What affects the choice of the distribution channel for imported new and foreign, fresh fruit? Data was collected using focus group methodology for RP 1 and case study methodology for RP 2. In Japan, four focus groups were conducted and four firms were interviewed. The research methodologies are discussed in chapter 3 while the data is analysed in chapter 4. The results of this research indicate that Japanese consumers view mangoes as foreign and new fruit. Therefore strategies for exporting this fruit could be different from those strategies for exporting fruit already familiar to the Japanese. At present, only a few studies relate to the export of new fruit to Japan. Therefore the major contribution of this research is to add to the existing literature in this area. In particular, this thesis makes several contributions for it contains: • the first consumer research done in Japan on mangoes; • arguably the first comprehensive exploration of consumer preferences in Japan for fresh fruit (table 5.2) and new fresh fruit (table 5.1); • arguably the first comprehensive model of new and foreign, fresh fruit distribution channels in Japan emphasising the first point of entry intermediaries (figure 4.2); • the first model for popularising new and foreign fruit (using mangoes as an example), in Japan (figure 5 .1); and • arguably the first investigation of bases for segmentation of a market for new and foreign fruit such as mangoes in Japan

Changes in the structure and regulation of employment in Japan differentially impact men and women. The labor force participation of Japanese women is increasing, but womens employment is concentrated in relatively deregulated and flexible forms of non-standard and precarious employment. Women and men have relatively equal levels of unemployment at present, but the flexibility which characterizes part-time and temporary work lands women into the ranks of the unemployed throughout their life course, while men are more likely to experience unemployment at the entry and exit points to the labor market. Unemployment measures are directed mainly at alleviating the sources of male unemployment. Employment deregulation in Japan embodies varying degrees of re-regulation depending on the gender composition of work types. Part-time work is undertaken primarily by women, and remains relatively deregulated and unprotected. Temporary work regulations vary according to whether the occupations are typically performed by women (deregulated temporary work) or men (tightly regulated temporary work). Working hours have been deregulated for both men and women, but coupled with the deregulation of temporary work in female-dominated occupations, the change poses a greater disadvantage for women. The recent reform of the Equal Employment Opportunity Law in Japan, while responding in part to social demands for strengthening the regulation of equality, remains unenforceable. The analysis concludes that rather than more equality in employment, recent Japanese developments point to the institutional embedding of a gender segmented labor market, with men continuing in relatively protected and regulated standard employment and women relegated to flexible and deregulated employment.

Comparatively speaking, Germans have made a substantial contribution to the international geographical research on Japan. This is true not only of the period of seclusion and the opening of Japan, but also of the entire 20th century. Much of the literature on EFL education in Japan describes a system that is fraught with problems. Over the last decade the Japanese Education Ministry (Monbusho) has introduced a number of reforms and introduced some new EFL courses into Japanese schools. The stated aim of the new courses has been to focus on the development of students' communicative abilities in English. However, the effectiveness of these reforms has been questioned particularly at the senior high school level. According to a number of commentators, difficulties occur because of a back wash effect of the university entrance examinations. Others criticise the teachers for continuing to use traditional teaching methods that may no longer satisfy the needs of present generation students.

Ce travail entend présenter la vie et l'oeuvre du folkloriste Miyamoto Tsunéichi qui permit à la minzokugaku, fondée par Yanagita Kunio d'entrer dans la modernité en insistant particulièrement sur le travail de terrain. En étudiant son parcours et sa formation, nous montrons comment s'est constitiié académiquement cette science nouvelle. Cette analyse épistémologique est suivie d'une présentation des thèmes majeurs de l'oeuvre miyamotienne qui ont pour point commun de s'interroger sur ce que sont les Japonais, et plus particulièrement les classes populaires, notamment rurales. L'auteur essaie de montrer, notamment par le recours à l'Histoire tout autant que par des observations d'ordre sociologique et des recherches sur le "patrimoine", comment la ruralité a nourri l'identité et la culture des Japonais, et observe le déclin de la vie à la campagne du fait de l'exode rural. Parmi les buts de cette discipline, l'aspect moral n'aura pas su enrayer un processus qui semble aujourd'hui encore irréversible. En revanche, l'aspect descriptif illustré par la richesse de l'oeuvre de Miyamoto nous fournit aujourd'hui une base de données sans précédent sur les cultures populaires du Japon
This work intends to introduce the life and work of folklorist Miyamoto Tsuneichi thanks to whom the new science created by Yanagita Kunio (i. E. Minzokugaku) could enter modernity, especially insisting on fieldwork. Studying his path and his formative years, I will show how that science was academically constituted. This epistemological analysis is followed by an introduction to the major themes in miyamotian work, whose common point is to interrogate about what the Japanese are, especially the lower classes, first of all the rural ones. This author tries to show, particularly by using History as well as making sociological observations and doing researches about "patrimony", how rurality nourrished the identity and cultures of the Japanese, and he observes the decline of life in rural areas due to rural exodus. Among the aims of this discipline, the moral side could not stop a process that seems irreversible even today. However, the desciptive side, illustrated by the huge amount of books written by Miyamoto gives us today an unprecedented database about the folk cultures in Japan
