This article looks at a number of James Baldwin's early essays. These include “Stranger in the Village” (1953), “A Question of Identity” (1954), “Encounter on the Seine: Black Meets Brown” (1950) and “The Discovery of What It Means to Be an American” (1959). In these essays Baldwin resolves the contradiction between his sense of himself as an individual and his racial identity by affirming both his American citizenship and his racial identity as a source of cultural strength and authority. He conceives of race in dialectical terms, with the African American as the dynamic agent in a process envisaged as leading to an overcoming of both whiteness and blackness in favour of a reformulated American nationalism.

In 1910, James Bryan Herrick published the first clinical and laboratory description of sickle cell anemia. Two years later, he published a case report on coronary thrombosis. Together, these case reports solidified his reputation as one of the premier diagnosticians of his generation. Now regarded as a central figure in the history of American medicine, Herrick played an integral role in the clinical adoption of the electrocardiograph and the professionalization of cardiology in the United States. Although a full decade passed before the medical profession recognized his clinical description of coronary thrombosis and myocardial infarction, it has had profound implications for cardiovascular medicine and prevention over the past hundred years. As a consultant physician, Herrick advocated in favor of incorporating chemistry and laboratory evaluation into clinical practice.

For balanced designs, degrees of freedom-adjusted univariate F tests or multivariate test statistics can be used to obtain a robust test of repeated measures main and interaction effect hypotheses even when the assumption of equality of the covariance matrices is not satisfied. For unbalanced designs, however, covariance heterogeneity can seriously distort the rates of Type I error of either of these approaches. This article shows how a multivariate approximate degrees of freedom procedure based on Welch (1947 , 1951 )- James (1951 , 1954) , as simplified by Johansen (1980) , can be applied to the analysis of unbalanced repeated measures designs without assuming covariance homogeneity. Through Monte Carlo methods, we demonstrate that this approach provides a robust test of the repeated measures main effect hypothesis even when the data are obtained from a skewed distribution. The Welch-James approach also provides a robust test of the interaction effect, provided that the smallest of the unequal group sizes is five to six times the number of repeated measurements minus one or provided that a reduced level of significance is employed.

AbstractThis tomb, recorded by Jean-Raimond Pacho in 1825 and partially excavated in 1848 by Vattier de Bourville, contained four decorated marble sarcophagi, three of them placed in large recesses, the fourth on the floor of the central hall. It was next mentioned in 1949 by Morgan, the Antiquities Officer, and recorded by Cassels in 1954. In 1958 Goodchild and Ward-Perkins partially cleared it, but left no known account of their findings. In 2000 James Thorn found that the interior walls were originally clad with marble veneer and the floor was mosaic, evidently a tomb of imperial grandeur.

The Vietnam War is a "hot" course topic now and texts are being produced to meet the demand. Neglected for so long, the Vietnam conflict has now generated a host of combat memoirs as well as works dealing with the diplomatic side of the war, but has produced fewer studies of the early years of U.S. involvement. The natural questions for each new Vietnam text are: Is this book useful, and is it necessary? Anthony Short's Origins of the Vietnam War is part of the Origins of Modern Wars series, that has already weighed in with some distinguished entries, such as James Joll's Origins of the First World War. Short defines his origins broadly, providing chapters on the early career of Ho Chi Minh, the French involvement and exodus, and the subsequent growth of U.S. involvement through 1965. The American involvement is broken down into a chapter on the period from 1952 to 1954 and another on the Geneva conference of 1954. These two chapters are followed by three chapters that cover the Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson years through 1965. Throughout, the author concentrates on the diplomatic maneuvering behind the conflict rather than on the purely military side of the war.

James J. Angleton, who served as chief of counterintelligence for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) from 1954 to 1974, was an important figure in the Cold War and, in a sense, the first line of defense against clandestine Soviet intelligence operations directed against the United States and its allies. In 1975 a U.S. Senate investigative committee—informally known as the Church Committee and led by Senator Frank Church—called Angleton to testify in public on his approach to counterintelligence, especially how he had become involved in illegal domestic operations in the United States. His testimony to committee staff investigators preceding the hearing, along with his public statements to senators during the hearing, displayed an extreme view of the global Communist threat. Amid ongoing revelations in the mid-1970s of illegal CIA actions, Angleton proved unable to mount an effective public defense of his approach.

Alan Marmaduke Wetherell was a physicist of repute. During his career he excelled in the practice of his profession. As a research student he showed great promise at the University of Liverpool, where he conducted his doctoral work in the group of Professor James Macdonald Cassels from 1954 to 1957. He went on to write his thesis on the ratio of radiative to mesic capture of stopped negative pions by hydrogen. He continued in his research group doing experiments on polarized muon beams and on the radiative β-decay of the pion. In 1957 he was awarded a Commonwealth Fund Fellowship, which he used to visit the California Institute of Technology, where he worked on the photoproduction of kaons and pions. In 1959 he moved from California to Switzerland, where he joined the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). He rose to become a senior research physicist in 1963 and was appointed the Division Leader of the Experimental Physics Division in 1981-84. He retired from the CERN staff in December 1997.

Summary The present contribution, the first panel of a diptych, discusses a claim put forward by George G.M. James in his book Stolen Legacy (1954). According to James, the Macedonian king Alexander III in association with the philosopher Aristotle plundered the Royal Library at Alexandria – a crucial episode in what Afrocentric thinkers consider the theft of African philosophy by the Greeks. The article presents and analyses the evidence for the founding of Alexandria, for Aristotle’s whereabouts during Alexander’s conquest of the Persian Empire, and for the establishment of the Alexandrian library. James’ contention turns out to be unsupported by any evidence. In addition, it is at odds with the results of historical research into events of the late fourth and early third century BCE relevant to the matter at hand. The alleged theft must have taken place in a city not yet founded, by a philosopher with an alibi, and in an institution that would not be established until at least a quarter of a century after the death of the Macedonian conqueror. Afrocentric responses to such criticisms will be discussed in a sequel to this contribution, published elsewhere in this issue of Lampas.

Gregory Maxwell (?Max') Kelly (1930?2007) was educated at the University of Sydney (BSc 1951 with First Class Honours, University Medal for Mathematics, Barker Prize, and James King of Irrawang Travelling Scholarship) and the University of Cambridge (BA 1953 with First Class Honours and two Wright's Prizes; Rayleigh Prize, 1955; PhD 1957). He returned to Australia as Lecturer in Pure Mathematics at the University of Sydney in 1957, became Senior Lecturer in 1961 and Reader in 1965. He was appointed Professor of Pure Mathematics first at the University of New South Wales in 1967 then at the University of Sydney in 1973, becoming Professor Emeritus in 1994. He introduced the mathematical discipline of category theory to Australia and continued active and influential research in the subject until the day of his death.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries the spread of railroad and telegraph networks in the United States and Europe, the introduction of steamships on transatlantic routes, and the laying of transatlantic telegraph cables initiated a period of pronounced economic integration within and between countries (Williamson 1996; Thomas 1954; Chandler 1977; Perloffet al. 1965; James 1978). This period was also characterized by a rapid pace of growth and pronounced international convergence in standards of living among the countries of western Europe, North America, and Australia (Maddison 1991). Jeffrey Williamson (1996) has recently argued that the increasing integration of factor markets, especially labor markets, in this era was a crucial factor in the pace of international convergence.

It is with great sadness that I share with you the death of Dr. Boris Carl Kondratieff (30 April 1954 to 14 August 2022) (Fig. 1). Boris was a 35 year employee of Colorado State University (CSU). He served as Director of the C. P. Gillette Museum of Arthropod Diversity, a collection of nearly 3.5 million specimens, most of which were amassed after his hire in 1986. He taught many courses at CSU and they were nearly always filled to capacity. Boris served as advisor for some 50 master’s and PhD students. He was highly sought after for graduate committees. His students conducted many high-quality research projects on the taxonomy, biogeography, and ecology of aquatic insects. In later years he collaborated with such luminaries of aquatic ecology as N. LeRoy Poff and James V. Ward, both of CSU.

Annie (‘Nan’) Anthony died on 1 May 2014 after a short illness. Born Annie Rodger in Dysart in 1933, she gained her MA in Modern Languages in 1955 from the University of Edinburgh, and worked on the Linguistic Survey of Scotland 1956–1958. In 1957 she married James (`Tony') Anthony, who had charge of the Edinburgh phonetics lab. While their children Jo and Chris were young, she worked as a part-time lecturer in the Edinburgh Phonetics Department, and the family spent the academic year 1963–64 in the USA, Tony researching in Peter Ladefoged's new laboratory at UCLA. From 1966 Nan was Research Phonetician in the Department of Child Life and Health at Edinburgh, a period of work which led to The Edinburgh Articulation Test (Anthony et al. 1971), a significant clinical assessment tool. In 1971 she moved to Moray House College of Education, where she remained for the rest of her career, becoming Head of the Department of Speech there in 1982.

A taxonomic review of Ctenodontina Enderlein, 1914, was performed and only two species are included: Ctenodontina mochica Lamas, 1973 and Ctenodontina pectinatipes Enderlein, 1914. Catostola Hull, 1958 stat. rev., a genus that was previously allocated as junior synonym of Ctenodontina has its status revalidated and justifications for this nomenclatural act are presented. Consequently, seven species previously allocated in Ctenodontina were transferred to Catostola stat. rev.: Catostola baleta (Walker, 1849) comb. nov., Catostola carrerai Hull, 1958 comb. rev., Catostola complicata (James, 1953) comb. nov., Catostola martini (Fisher, 1992) comb. nov., Catostola maya (Carrera & d’Andretta, 1953) comb. rev., Catostola nairae (Vieira, 2012) comb. nov., and Catostola sagta (Vieira, Ayala-Landa & Rafael, 2017) comb. nov. All species were redescribed and illustrated, except Catostola carrerai Hull, 1958 comb. rev., and Ctenodontina mochica Lamas, 1973, for which only diagnosis were provided. A new species Catostola indecisa sp. nov., was described and illustrated. In addition, new distribution records were provided for Catostola baleta comb. nov., Catostola martini comb. nov., Catostola maya comb. rev., Catostola nairae comb. nov., and Catostola sagta comb. nov. An identification key to all species is provided including distribution maps with previous and new records.

The article builds on James Morrow’s theoretical formulation on asymmetric alliances, which contends that alliances are formed as a result of a security–autonomy trade-off between great powers and minor powers. It expands Morrow’s theory by showing that in the absence of a common threat or shared interests, the trade-off tends to leave a deficit in a weaker state’s net benefits from the alliance. I argue that side payments fill in the deficit in gains for weaker states. The article highlights the importance of domestic political constraints in shaping leaders’ alliance policies. I use the US–Pakistan alliance as a case study to probe the argument. The analysis presented here shows that the alliance, formed in 1954, was a result of a strategic trade-off between the United States and Pakistan. The case provides support to the argument that side payments played a crucial role in cementing the alliance.

Fleming was not enthusiastic about the architecture of the most expensive hotel in the world (at the time of its opening), nor about its ‘rich and dull’ gardens. He obviously chose it as a representation of the ‘easy, soft, high’ life of 1959 in Miami, and as the perfect setting for a gathering of American millionaires and secret agents, gamblers, gangsters, hitmen and prostitutes.Directly below Bond['s Aloha Suite], the elegant curve of the Cabana Club swept down to the beach – two storeys of changing-rooms below a flat roof dotted with chairs and tables and an occasional red and white striped umbrella. Within the curve was the brilliant green oblong Olympic-length swimming-pool fringed on all sides by row upon row of mattressed steamer chairs on which the customers would soon be getting their fiftydollar-a-day sunburn.The evening before, Bond had ‘the most delicious meal […] in his life’, at the most expensive restaurant of Miami. But the thought of ‘eating like a pig […] the easy life, the rich life revolted him. He felt momentarily ashamed of his disgust […] It was the puritan in him that couldn't take it'. It was also Fleming's nod to his readers, barely out of the grim austerity of postwar Britain, where food was rationed until 1954, bombsites abounded, housing was severely substandard or temporary, smog was thick and yellow, and wartime shortages lingered to the end of the decade. Despite Prime Minister Harold Macmillan's optimistic 1957 assurance to his fellow Conservatives that most of them had ‘never had it so good’, outside lavatories and no central heating were still common. His calls for ‘restraint and common sense’ were hardly answered by Bond's life of oyster-and-champagne dining and air-conditioned vacationing.

John Riley Holt was an experimental physicist who dedicated his working life to research in nuclear and particle physics at the University of Liverpool. He was born in 1918 in Runcorn, Cheshire, and in 1938 was awarded a first-class honours degree in physics at Liverpool University. He obtained his PhD in 1941 and became a member of Sir James Chadwick’s team working on the UK atomic weapon project. After the war he developed several new experimental techniques, which he used to make a systematic study of the deuteron stripping process with the use of the Liverpool cyclotron. After the Liverpool synchro-cyclotron became operational in 1954 he initiated a programme of precision measurements of cross-sections for proton–proton and pion–proton scattering. After the first observation of parity violation in 1957, his group completed an important experiment that observed parity violation in muon decay. When the construction of an electron synchrotron (NIN A, at the Daresbury Laboratory) was proposed, he became leader of the magnet design team. As NIN A became operational in 1966, John established a group to measure the cross-sections for the photoproduction of neutral and charged pions. The group then developed a collaboration with colleagues in other universities to measure the spin dependence of cross-sections for meson photoproduction by using a polarized photon beam and a polarized proton target. Before his retirement he contributed to the design of the experiment to determine the spin structure of the proton, performed by the European Muon Collaboration.
