e19589 Background: Recent advances in telecommunication technology have created sophisticated systems to support and evaluate chronic disease. The telephone-based interactive voice response system (IVRS) is a simple method of delivering specific health information to patients and allowing them to interact with care providers. The IVRS has been used to monitor chronic conditions such as cancer, diabetes, asthma, hypertension, and psychiatric disorders. Our study aimed to evaluate patient adherence to routine IVRS symptom assessment in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Methods: We conducted a longitudinal study in patients with a diagnosis of Philadelphia chromosome-positive CML treated at a tertiary cancer center. We collected IVRS data every 2 weeks for 6 months. Upon recruitment, patients were trained to use the IVRS and selected preferred days and times to receive IVRS calls. The IVRS asked patients to rate symptoms using the M. D. Anderson Symptom Inventory CML module (MDASI-CML), which assesses 20 symptom items and 6 interference items on a 0-10 scale (0 = not present and 10 = symptom as bad as you can imagine or complete intereference). Compliance equaled the number of answered IVRS calls divided by total calls for that patient. Univariate analysis examined associations between IVRS compliance and various demographic, clinical, and treatment variables. Results: Of 160 patients enrolled in the study, 12 withdrew and were excluded from analysis. Mean age of the sample was 51 years (SD 13.7); most were female (54%) and white non-Hispanic (74%). We collected 1,197 MDASI-CML assessments overall and found a 66% compliance rate. Almost one-third (29.7%) of the patients had 100% compliance; 10% answered no IVRS calls. IVRS compliance was statistically significantly associated with marital status (p=.016) and ethnic group (p=.045). Patients who were married or white were more likely to answer IVRS calls. Conclusions: 66% of our sample answered every IVRS call. The IVRS could be extremely useful for population survey research. It should be especially useful for assessing symptoms in chronic disease over time. More studies are needed to evaluate the utility of capturing symptom clinical trials status via the IVRS in the cancer population.

Background: The incidence of intravesical recurrence (IVR) following radical nephroureterectomy (RNU) is reported in up to 50% of patients with upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC). It was suggested that preoperative diagnostic ureteroscopy (URS) could increase the IVR rate after RNU. However, the available data are often conflicting. Thus, in this systematic review and meta-analysis we sought to synthesize available data for the impact of pre-RNU URS for UTUC on IVR and other oncological outcomes. Materials and methods: A systematic literature search of the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases was performed in June 2021. Cumulative analyses of hazard ratios (HRs) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) were conducted. The primary endpoint was intravesical recurrence-free survival (IVRFS), with the secondary endpoints being cancer-specific survival (CSS), overall survival (OS), and metastasis-free survival (MFS). Results: Among a total of 5489 patients included in the sixteen selected papers, 2387 (43.4%) underwent diagnostic URS before RNU and 3102 (56.6%) did not. Pre-RNU diagnostic URS was significantly associated with worse IVRFS after RNU (HR = 1.44, 95% CI: 1.29–1.61, p < 0.001) than RNU alone. However, subgroup analysis including patients without biopsy during URS revealed no significant impact of diagnostic URS on IVRFS (HR = 1.28, 95% CI: 0.90–1.80, p = 0.16). The results of other analyses showed no significant differences in CSS (HR = 0.94, p = 0.63), OS (HR: 0.94, p = 0.56), and MFS (HR: 0.91, p = 0.37) between patients who underwent URS before RNU and those who did not. Conclusions: The results of this meta-analysis confirm that diagnostic URS prior to RNU is significantly associated with worse IVRFS, albeit with no concurrent impact on the other long-term survival outcomes. Our results indicate that URS has a negative impact on IVRFS only when combined with endoscopic biopsy. Future studies are warranted to assess the role of immediate postoperative intravesical chemotherapy in patients undergoing biopsy during URS for suspected UTUC.

AbstractIntravaginal rings (IVRs) are minimally invasive polymeric devices specifically designed to be used for the sustained and prolonged release of various type of drugs such as hormones. One of the benefits of using topical drug delivery systems (e.g., IVRs) is the fact that systemic drug delivery may cause drug resistance due to elevated drug levels. Topical drug delivery also provides higher concentrations of the drug to the target site and has fewer side effects. In addition, when a drug is administered vaginally, the hepatic first-pass effect is avoided, resulting in higher absorption. Contraception and treatments for specific diseases such as endometriosis and hormone deficiencies can be improved by the administration of hormones via an IVR. This article aims to classify and compare various designs of commercially available and non-commercial hormonal IVRs and to analyze their performance. Current challenges affecting the development of IVRs are investigated, and proposed solutions are discussed. A comprehensive search of publications in MEDLINE/PubMed and of commercial product data of IVRs was performed, and the materials, designs, performance, and applications (e.g., contraception, endometriosis, estrogen deficiency and urogenital atrophy) of hormonal IVRs were thoroughly evaluated. Most hormonal IVRs administer female sex hormones, i.e., estrogen and progestogens. In terms of material, IVRs are divided into 3 main groups: silicone, polyurethane, and polyethylene-co-vinyl acetate IVRs. As regards their design, there are 4 major designs for IVRs which strongly affect their performance and the timing and rate of hormone release. Important challenges include reducing the burst release and maintaining the bioavailability of hormones at their site of action over a prolonged period of administration as well as lowering production costs. Hormonal IVRs are a promising method which could be used to facilitate combination therapies by administering multiple drugs in a single IVR while eliminating the side effects of conventional drug administration methods. IVRs could considerably improve womenʼs quality of life all over the world within a short period of time.

The vagina is a promising site for both local and systemic drug delivery and represents an interesting administration route for compounds with poor oral bioavailability. Whereas most of the currently marketed dosage forms were designed as immediate release formulations, intravaginal rings (IVRs) offer the possibility of a controlled vaginal drug delivery over several weeks or months. For a long time, the development of IVRs was limited to steroid-releasing formulations. Recently, IVRs have witnessed a surge of new interest as promising delivery systems for microbicides. Therefore, various novel IVR designs have been introduced. To ensure that only safe and effective IVRs will be administered to patients, it is important to properly distinguish between IVRs with desired and undesired release performance. In vitro methods for evaluating drug release of IVRs that present with sufficient predictive capacity for in vivo drug release, and discriminatory power with regard to IVRs quality, are an essential tool for this purpose. The objective of the present review article is to present the current status of in vitro drug release testing of IVRs and to critically discuss current compendial and non-official in vitro drug release methods with regard to their discriminatory power and in vivo predictivity.

Abstract. The lower continental crust section of the Ivrea–Verbano Zone (Italian Alps) was intruded by a ∼ 8 km thick gabbroic–dioritic body (Ivrea Mafic Complex) in the Upper Carboniferous–Lower Permian, in conjunction with the post-collisional transtensional regime related to the Variscan orogeny. In the deepest levels of the Ivrea Mafic Complex, several peridotite–pyroxenite sequences considered of magmatic origin are exposed. We present here a petrological–geochemical investigation of the peridotites from the largest magmatic ultramafic sequence of the Ivrea Mafic Complex, locally called Rocca d'Argimonia. In spite of the widespread subsolidus re-equilibration under granulite facies conditions, most likely reflecting a slow cooling evolution in the lower continental crust, the Rocca d'Argimonia peridotites (dunites to harzburgites and minor clinopyroxene-poor lherzolites) typically retain structures and microstructures of magmatic origin. In particular, the harzburgites and the lherzolites typically show poikilitic orthopyroxenes enclosing partially dissolved olivine and minor spinel. Olivine has forsterite proportion diminishing from the dunites to the harzburgites and the lherzolites (90 mol % to 85 mol %) and negatively correlating with δ18O (+5.8 ‰ to +6.6 ‰). Gabbronorite dykes locally crosscut the peridotites and show millimetre-scale thick, orthopyroxenite to websterite reaction zones along the contact with host rocks. We propose that the Rocca d'Argimonia peridotites record a process of reactive melt flow through a melt-poor olivine-rich crystal mush or a pre-existing dunite. This process was most likely responsible for the olivine dissolution shown by the poikilitic orthopyroxenes in the harzburgites–lherzolites. We infer that the reactively migrating melts possessed a substantial crustal component and operated at least at the scale of ∼ 100 m.

Abstract. The Ivrea–Verbano Zone is the most complete, time-integrated crust–upper mantle archive in the world. It is a unique target for assembling data on the deep crust and the Moho transition zone and testing several hypotheses of formation, evolution, and modification of the continental crust through space and time across the Earth. The ICDP workshop Drilling the Ivrea–Verbano zonE (DIVE), held in Baveno, Italy, from 1 to 5 May 2017, focused on the scientific objectives and the technical aspects of drilling and sampling in the Ivrea–Verbano Zone at depth. A total of 47 participants from 9 countries with a wide variety of scientific and/or drilling expertise attended the meeting. Discussion on the proposed targets sharpened the main research lines and led to working groups and the necessary technical details to compile the full drilling proposal. The participants of the workshop concluded that four drilling operations in the Val Sesia and Val d'Ossola crustal sections represent the scientifically most promising solution to achieve the major goals within DIVE to unravel the physico-chemical properties and architecture of the lower continental crust towards the crust–mantle (Moho) transition zone.

Le binge drinking est un phénomène de consommation excessive d’alcool, de plus en plus répandu dans le monde entier, principalement chez les jeunes. Le binge drinking, déjà connu officiellement sous le nom de beuverie express en français, a pour objectif d’arriver à l’état d’ivresse et de ressentir les effets de l’alcool en très peu de temps. Sur la base d’un corpus composé de blogs, d’articles de presse en ligne et de forums de discussion, notre article analyse la manière dont les internautes dénomment ce phénomène en français et parlent de différents aspects du champ sémantique en question (consommation excessive d’alcool, types de boissons, ivresse, etc.). Notre étude a démontré que ce champ sémantique, connu pour son caractère argotogène, est particulièrement favorable à l’utilisation du français non standard : les internautes utilisent un grand nombre d’expressions pour parler du phénomène du binge drinking et, en général, de la consommation d’alcool en français.

UNESCO World Heritage Sites are a useful tool to protect and promote the legacy human beings leave over the centuries. Ivrea, a 20th century industrial city, is the second Italian industrial site recorded in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is a city in the North-West of Italy, historically known for the Olivetti factory, which made it world-famous by combining visionary ideals and a careful entrepreneurial policy. Our study focuses on the tourism value of the Ivrea UNESCO site and, in particular, aims at analyzing the level of integration of local stakeholders and their ability to identify guidelines for the promotion of the UNESCO site in terms of tourism. The research process was conducted with an in-depth analysis of the perception and consideration of public and private stakeholders concerning this topic. A questionnaire was prepared by a group of experts and individual interviews were conducted using the Delphi method; then, the results of the interviews were presented and the identification of priorities was carried out using the nominal group technique. Results show that the new UNESCO site in Ivrea has great potential, both in cultural terms, continuing the dissemination of Adriano Olivetti’s ideals, and in terms of tourism, because it may turn into a tourist attraction capable of generating new tourist flows and promoting the Olivetti approach.

Abstract The work provides a minero-petrographic characterization of the main roman finds in white marble of the Garda Civic Museum of Ivrea (Piemonte, Northern Italy). A multi-analytical approach based on optical and scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe and stable isotope analyses has been performed. The chemical composition of the main mineral component (calcite and/or dolomite), and of subordinate or accessory minerals useful for discriminative purposes were attained. A database for archaeometric purposes of the artefacts was achieved and a comparison with the Italian and Mediterranean marbles reported in the literature was implemented. The marbles resulted generally of Alpine provenance. This suggests that Eporedia (the old name of Ivrea) in Roman times was a site of local importance, with the employment of goods coming from trade routes connected with the surrounding alpine areas.

Abstract In this article, we study the nonlinear and nonsmooth interval-valued optimization problems in the face of data uncertainty, which are called interval-valued robust optimization problems (IVROPs). We introduce the concept of nondominated solutions for the IVROP. If the interval-valued objective function f and constraint functions {g}_{i} are nonsmooth on Banach space E, we establish a nonsmooth and robust Karush-Kuhn-Tucker optimality theorem.

Le “bateau ivre,” figure de l’ exil, est pour Beckett une ‘invitation au voyage,’ aux sens propre et figuré, et les résurgences du “Bateau ivre” et de sa traduction dans ses écrits ultérieurs sont une clé pour appréhender sa poétique du bilinguisme.

OBJECTIVES/SPECIFIC AIMS: The long-term goal of this project is to develop a cost effective 3D printed multipurpose intravaginal ring (IVR) to prevent against unintended pregnancies and infectious diseases.Our goal is to develop a female-controlled method for prevention using innovative IVRs. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: In vitro and in vivo characterization. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: Controlled and fine-tuned release kinetics 100% drug release from 3D printed IVRs compared with 10%–15% with traditional injection molded IVRs cost-effective engineering of multipurpose IVR with CLIP 3D printing technology. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: If successful, this project will revolutionize the engineering of IVRs and will have a global impact on human health. Not only we will help save millions of women around the world but also millions of children that are infected by their HIV-positive mothers through gestation or breast feeding.

This study presents a face-to-face simulation of social interaction based on scene roaming, real-time voice capture, and action capture. This paper aimed to compare the difference between social and traditional plane social communication, analyzing its advantages and shortcomings. In particular, we designed an experiment to study the performance of face-to-face simulation based on virtual reality technology, observing the adaptability of the user to the system and the accuracy of body language recognition. We developed an immersive virtual reality social application (IVRSA), which has a basic social function. As an experimental platform, IVRSA uses Unity3D as its engine, and HTC VIVE as an external input/output device, with voice communication, immersive virtual tour, and head and hand movement simulation functions. We recruited 30 volunteers for the test. The test consisted of two parts. The first part was to provide a news topic for volunteers to freely communicate in IVRSA and WeChat. After communication, we used questionnaires to obtain feedback results of the test and compared the two social applications. In the second part, some volunteers were given a list of actions, which they were asked to describe to the rest of volunteers in the form of body expression, letting them guess the action they were performing. After the end of test, the accuracy rate and the time used were analyzed. Results showed that user’s intention expression efficiency was very high in the immersive virtual reality social system. Body tracking devices with more tracking points can provide better body expression effect.

Purpose This study aims to contribute to the literature by offering a different sector and emphasising the importance of females in audit firm (AF) governance on audit firm performance (AFP). Design/methodology/approach Ordinary least squares (OLS) and instrument variables regression (IVREG) with two-stage least squares are used to test the paper’s hypotheses. Findings Both OLS and IVREG estimation results show that both the proportion of females and gender diversity at board and owner levels and the total number of shares of female owners seem to enhance the performance of AFs. Practical implications These results may be important for policymakers and regulators to set a quota for women’s representation on AF governance or decide arrangements for women in AFs as in the regulations for the high hierarchical levels of other corporate firms. Originality/value This paper extends the current literature in the context of AFs in Turkey, positing that females in AF governance might enhance performance to a great extent.

Spike-triggered averaging of dorsal and ventral root potentials was used in anesthetized cats to disclose possible synaptic connections of spinal interneurons in the intermediate nucleus with afferent fibers and/or motoneurons. With this method we have been able to document the existence of a distinct group of interneurons whose activity was associated with the recording of inhibitory potentials in the ventral roots (iVRPs), but not with negative dorsal root potentials (nDRPs). The iVRPs had mean durations of 60.8 +/- 22.1 ms and latencies between 1.7 and 5.1 ms relative to the onset of the interneuronal spikes. Within this group of neurons it was possible to characterize two categories depending on their responses to segmental inputs. Most type A interneurons were mono- or disynaptically activated by group I muscle afferents and polysynaptically by low threshold (1.08-1.69 X T) cutaneous fibers. Type B interneurons were instead polysynaptically activated by group II muscle and by cutaneous fibers with thresholds ranging from 1.02 to 3.1 X T. Whenever tested, both type A and B interneurons could be antidromically activated from Clarke's columns. There was a second group of interneurons whose activity was associated with the generation of both iVRPs and nDRPs. These potentials had mean durations of 107.5 +/- 35.6 and 131.5 +/- 32 ms, respectively, and onset latencies between 1.7 and 6.1 ms. The interneurons belonging to this group, which appear not to send axonal projections to Clarke's column, could be classified in three categories depending on their responses to peripheral inputs. Type C interneurons responded mono- or disynaptically to group I muscle volleys and polysynaptically to intermediate threshold (1.22-2.7 X T) cutaneous afferents. Type D interneurons were polysynaptically activated by group II muscle afferents (2.3-8.5 X T) and by intermediate threshold (1.4-3 X T) cutaneous fibers and type E interneurons only by group I muscle afferents with mono- or disynaptic latencies. A third group of interneurons produced nDRPs without iVRPs. The nDRPs had onset latencies varying from 1.9 to 6.2 ms and mean durations of 130.0 +/- 34.6 ms. These neurons (type F) showed spontaneous and evoked bursts of activity and were not antidromically activated from Clarke's column. They responded to stimulation of low- and intermediate-threshold cutaneous fibers (1.04-2.9 X T) with mono- and polysynaptic latencies, but not by group I muscle fibers. Type F interneurons appear to be located in more superficial layers than all the other interneurons.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Education has always been modified by employing different technologies to enhance the knowledge acquisition and performance of students. Virtual Reality (VR) along with the Game Industry is among those evolving technologies for educational applications. This study aimed to design, implement, and evaluate an immersive VR-based Educational Game (IVREG) for learning topology relations. Topology relations are one of the fundamental topics which exist in Geospatial Information Science (GIS); due to the great capabilities offered by GIS, learning these basic topis is of great importance. A total of thirty-seven male middle-school students participated in this study. A total of four questionnaires were designed to evaluate the suitability of the proposed learning environment and its components at schools, particularly for learning geospatial topics. In conclusion, students found the IVREG useful and effective in classrooms. Additionally, the results showed that the components, namely the integrated pedagogical approach, gamification, and VR technology, were all suitable for being used at schools. On a final note, however, the study indicated that the immersion aspect of such learning environments should be enhanced in future studies.

Résumé A priori, il n’y a aucune raison pour que les Amérindiens du Canada, comme d’autres peuples du monde, ne puissent pas boire de l’alcool simplement pour le plaisir, avec modération. Mais la littérature n’aborde pratiquement jamais la question, dans un contexte où il est notoire que l’abus d’alcool est un fléau social et médical chez les autochtones. Or, des faits et des récits recueillis par les auteures auprès de membres de communautés algonquiennes du Québec démontrent que la réalité est plus nuancée. Tout d’abord, la culture algonquienne de l’alcool est plus complexe qu’il n’y paraît, tant au niveau des connaissances au sujet des diverses boissons que dans les manières de boire. Ensuite, sont particulièrement étudiés les modèles de consommation attachés aux trois grandes catégories d’alcool : la bière (brassée ou artisanale), le « fort » (boisson à haut pourcentage d’alcool) et le vin (vin de table ou vin fortifié). On y relève que les Amérindiens peuvent avoir une hiérarchie de goûts et que leurs choix sont liés à des impératifs économiques et à une accessibilité de produits. Enfin, alors que le discours public de l’élite amérindienne est fortement empreint de l’idéologie dominante des Alcooliques Anonymes, l’analyse des données est replacée dans le cadre d’une culture politique, face à laquelle les individus, buveurs ou non buveurs, peuvent décider de se positionner pour se définir socialement. L’adoption ou le rejet de la culture du vin et de son décorum font ici l’objet d’une attention spécifique. La recherche ouvre alors des pistes pour comprendre l’évolution des codes régissant les rapports sociaux chez les Amérindiens, entre eux et face aux autres.
