In this study intoxication is defined as a temporal emergence that links two realms (one is related to drug and the other to the theme of inspiration) and questions a specific stake, the stake of the tension, a constituent of literature, between knowledge and pleasure. Within this frame, the study of a whole range of literary texts connected to intoxication leads to the reversal of the paradigm generally in use : intoxication considered as it is in the study, is not in opposition to theory but, on the contrary, combines with it. After these two parts more specifically concerned with problems related to theory but also to questions of methodology, three further parts are dedicated to text analyses and organized in such a way as to first bring about the foundation of speech, then of its development and finally of the limits encountered

Dromoscopy", a term proposed by Paul Virilio, designates a visual conception of landscape in motion. Not limited to what is seen through a car’s windshield, dromoscopic vision can be through a train or airplane window or other vehicle-as-vision-machine devices through which the cinematographic or audiovisual image portrays this particular phenomenon of perception. This thesis aims to reconsider cinema through this mysterious mobile vision, to find the shared power behind these unspooling landscapes. This ubiquitous, fragmented and seemingly ordinary vision, which discreetly and unconsciously alters our perception, has been ignored despite its visual and kinesthetic energy.Three of dromoscopic vision’s effects on viewers will be explored: dizziness, hypnosis, and intoxication. Faced with a moving landscape, spectators may lose their bearings in the illusion of movement; enter into a modified state of consciousness; or experience a radical transformation of perception. Frontal vision causes dizziness in hyperspace travel; lateral vision hypnotizes observers with its repetitive rhythms; the intoxication of forms" extends into the imagination of a metamorphosed world. This vision probes its audience in a cutaneous, muscular and visceral way.Hidden behind the dramaturgical space, dromoscopic rhythm discreetly summons spectators’ kinesthetic sensations to join the movement, while their consciousness focuses on the plot. Dromoscopic vision carries us away with its simple and complex unspooling motion, makes us feel the movement and experience film (more) fully

Following two basic concepts of mine, pragmatic philology and Dionysian medicine, I have analysed Rabelais’ work pointing out the presence of the pharmakon. I have tried to understand what theory of man might go together with Dionysian pharmacology. To carry out this research a large number of authors (from Homer to Ficino) had to be analysed and in this way I have been able to draw up a theory of pre-modern individuality. By finding an alternative to the current opinion according to which the Renaissance would already present modern man, Rabelais’ thought appeared clearer to me. The pharmakon is part of a coherent syncretist philosophy that places a higher value on the ontological function of excess. Rabelais’ text can therefore regain its systematic structure. The elements that make up his work are all parts of a coherent thought (in keeping with itself and in relation to the Renaissance) which I called: philosophy of going beyond the Ego

Alcohol is a major theme in the works of Marguerite Duras. The aim of this research is to study Durassian alcohol from the point of view of the story, the imagination and the reading. The first part outlines the place and the role of alcohol in the diegesis. We examine Durassian alcohol in view of its relationship with space, time, and characters. The second part tackles the ambivalent nature of Durassian alcohol from the angle of fantasy. In particular, we seek to highlight the complex relationship that alcohol has with destruction and creation (including literary creation) in the author’s imagination. The third part focuses on the “reading of alcohol”. It mostly aims to analyse the ways in which this theme is received by the reader. Finally, this leads us to make the assumption that the reading of the Durassian text is indeed a “drunk reading”, that is to say, an experience which generates, in the real reader, similar effects to those alcohol causes in the fictional characters

The young people have their own identities. Subjects of numerous studies, beforehand they were often said to have intentions without being questioned. One of the goals of school, a privileged place for their socialization, is to protect the youths it is responsible for. So, it sets up prevention and more particularly the one concerning drunkenness, a real problem of public health. The main part of our corpus is made of the list of admissions for the heavy drunkenness of the 15 to 22 year-old youth in an Emergency department of a Hospital in a French town, questionnaires distributed to those patients and their parents (111 for the patients, 26 for the parents) as well as participant observations and (16 interviews). This study takes into account the 2008 admissions made during four periods of a year from 2009 to 2014. This work aims at understanding the young people, their drunkenness, their expectations and the challenges of a relationship parent/child/school. Such intoxications are worrying but they may eventually be only fantasized and they could be mastered thanks to the joint action of parents and school, together with its partner external agencies

The hypothesis supported in this work is that in Churcampa (Peruvian Andes), consumption of alcohol and drunkenness offer inhabitants a possibility of dialogue which would not otherwise exist, given the extreme hierarchical organisation of social relations. The author first brings to the fore the existence of rules which have to be respected while drinking and getting drunk, before underlining the obligatory character of these two behaviours. The description and the analysis of several contexts during which the inhabitants of Churcampa collectively drink alcohol lead her to envisage drinking as a form of exchange. In order to understand what such an exchange consists of, and with the aim of going beyond a purely materialistic and functionalist analysis, the perspective is widened and drinking is seen as a ritual phenomenon, then as a rite of passage. Finally the author demonstrates that beyond its “liminal” character, drunkenness can even reveal, in some cases, a sacrificial dimension. By taking the case of solitary drinkers victims of the violence of Shining Path’s militants and the army and then evoking the case of “protestants” who have chosen to stop drinking after their conversion and who seem to maintain relations with little hierarchy, the author concludes that her starting hypothesis only applies, in the final count, on the one hand, to collective and festive drinking, and, on the other hand, to unequal and hierarchical predominantly catholic communities of Churcampa

This thesis proposes to study the expression and depiction of movement in ancient Greek painting, specifically vase painting. While illustrating the very rich and unique source of the visual world of ancient Greece, the emphasis is kept on the link which unites the emotions to the body movements, gesture or posture. Theories about ancient pictorial representations are unanimous on the subject of painting the human figure. From the myths concerning the creation of painting and visual arts (sculpture & modeling), the artist must portray and illustrate the living in all aspects, external and internal. Using the human figure and representation of the anatomy, appears to be the most effective way to convey the emotions and feelings that animate the body through the depiction of gesture, posture or facial expression. This portrayal applies to the expression of intense emotion or altered state of being such as: the over consumption of wine, being possessed by a god (divine action) or the imminence of death. For a better understanding of the portrayal of this phenomenon, it is necessary to turn to the origin of the ancient Greek idea of the soul (θυμός or/and ψυχή). From the Homeric age this concept can be understood as the basis of sentiment and emotion and can be seen as natural as a breath which enters and exits the body. This notion is of key importance, to understand the origin of movement that brings to life the characters depicted in the images, whether consumed by drunkenness, under the yoke of divine possession or about to die. In each case, the soul is solicited, in one way or another, whether in its temporary or permanent separation or dissociative state from the body. Whether the aim is set out in art or in the relationship that the soul maintains with the body, Ancient Greek imagery does not ignore such concepts as the expression of these intense emotional and altered states whatsoever. Bodily movements clearly articulate an out of the ordinary state by the orientation of the body, gestures, actions and facial expressions and does not seem to be limited to the representation of only a physiological reaction. A link will be established between ancient images and modern theories developed on the subject of representation of movement in art. The objective: To demonstrate that the artists who adorned ancient vases favored the illustration of a concept or an idea, by imagination and expressivity, above the reporting of a perfect reality

Initialy, the dream is not central to the philosophy of Deleuze. However, it seems interesting to follow the paths that this idea offers, and to listen to the multiple voices arising from the problems related to it, for different reasons. First, our work will debunk a common illusion about Deleuze : the common idea according to which his thought is a delirious and a never-ending praise of folly. Far from this cliché, Deleuze never gave up on defining philosophy with strict rigor, as a « debunking undertaking », this has been explored by Lucretius, Spinoza and Nietzsche before him. Although, the dream plays a major role in his philosophy, but it is not the role we commonly think it plays. We would like to defend the idea of a superior onirism of Deleuze, that helps giving an original consistency and a paradoxical status to the dream itself. Then the dream becomes a relevant starting point for an assessment of the relationship between truth, thought and life. From the fictional illusion of an idealist shape of the dream to the imaginative power of the onirical process, we can find three metamorphosis of the dream in the philosophy of Deleuze, to the service of a superior justice : a fiction of the airs, an exaltation of the depths, a cristal of the earth

John edgar wideman's fiction was first published when the black arts movement was fast developing in his country, the united states of america. Yet it owes little to "black" nationalism. From the start any racial definition of man is forcefully rejected by this heir to richard wright, ralph ellison and robert hayden. In his first three novels, published between 1967 and 1973, he laments at length the prevailing "black" / "white" dichotomy, but fails to find consistent ways out of what he calls "little time", i. E. Racial history. Perceived as yet another rehash of the paradigm of race, black heroics are unambiguously disqualified in hurry home and the lynchers. Only in 1981-1983 with the homewood trilogy does wideman strike a new and more jubilant note, as he lovingly gathers up the numerous stories of ordinary life which were told around him when a child. Authorship is no longer a matter of absolute control over the text; rather it means opening up to the many voices competing for air time and truth within society. The storyteller acts as medium to them all. Only then can he hope to gain access to (african) "great time" or (australian) "dreamtime", "a nonlinear, atemporal medium in which all things that ever have been, are, or will be mingle freely". As all stories go backward and forward, linear time collapses and the always present tense of narrative takes over. To counter the notorious slavers' shuttle and erase racial history, wideman has now come to rely on the semi-autonomous shuttle of narrative. Since 1989 his assiduous and ever more sophisticated weaving of textual "great time" is coupled with an uninhibited revisiting of the so-called enlightenment, when africans were transported to the new world, the modern notions of "race" and "ethnicity" invented and ancient greece remodeled and cleansed of all egyptian influence. Because there is always one more voice to hear, there can be no end to the storytelling. Narrative "great time" is what comes next and next and next. In wideman's fiction "blackness" is the opposite of a boxed-in identity: it means revealing and exploring man's infinite possibilities

An Andean anthropological focus on ritual and collective intoxication within a festive setting – in particular in funeral contexts - leads to a prolific and fascinating field of research since chicha, the thick fermented corn beverage, contains a world of meaning. The drunkenness it engenders promotes diverse ways of creating links with not only the surrounding animated world but also with the dead. In that sense, it is performative because it makes exist these entities who become serious interlocutors for the humans. This ethnography conducted in the Andean region of Cochabamba (Bolivia), in the Quechua peasant communities of Qhoari and in the nearby village of Arani, analyzes inebriation as a collective action that consolidates social ties, strengthens group identity and even brings the sacred closer. Intoxication is therefore sought, desired and valued. In short, it is a means of communication that allows the establishment of reciprocal relations among humans and between them and the Pachamama (all beings that inhabit animated nature). It is through liquor that human requests can be heard by supernatural entities who can dialogue with them only when they are inebriated, appearing through an alter ego. In fact, wetness is the symbol of life; dryness refers to death. Offerings of libations and blood sacrifices promote the rehydration and nurturing of evil entities and the dead. It is through mechanisms very similar to those at work in such offerings that the body of the drinker, wrecked by alcohol, almost agonizing, acquires its sacrificial meaning

In order to achieve the goal, following tasks are solved: perform analysis of system requirements specification templates, user requirements specification tools and their compatibility with each other; develop SRS and user requirements specification tools criteria; and investigate a proposed tool with experimental data. Scientific literature, SRS templates and user requirements specification tools summary are used during analysis. The main result of this work is the proposed iVRS tool that solves the problem under investigation, since it allows choosing the exact and correct SRS template and software. This solution differs from existing solutions because it allows users to select the requirements specification tool in the pre-specification stage, where the error price is lowest. This paper also sets out SRS and user requirements specification tool criteria. Paper consists of 59 pages, 14 tables and 19 pictures.

Binge drinking is a worldwide and multi-faceted phenomenon usually defined as having 4 or more alcoholic beverages per occasion for women or 5 or more drinks per occasion for men. Binge drinking also underlies many other risky behaviors (inter- and intra-personal violence, drunk driving, sexual risks, etc.) as well as negative health consequences (cancers, cardiovascular diseases, etc.). The three-fold nature of binge drinking (biological, psychological and sociological) encompasses a wide variety of areas ranging from endocrinology to social and cognitive psychology. Getting an overview of the problem, however, is made difficult by the very fact that few evolutionary analysis have been suggested. Here, we propose to frame the problem from a costly signaling perspective. What type of signals do the binge drinkers send? To whom is the signal directed? Are those signals courtship displays or threats to competitors in order to assure reproductive success or maintain social status? How can contextual factors influence drinking rates? Exploring causes, correlates and predictors of binge drinking and its interdisciplinary nature should serve as a relevant starting point to then reveal the necessity of an evolutionary framework. To address these questions, I first started by shaping an evolutionary-based approach to binge drinking taking into account current data and theories (Chapter 1). I then ran various laboratory studies (eye-tracking) and online experiments aiming at evaluating the mating and intra-sexual signals that binge drinkers send to others (Chapter 2 and 3). Based on those results, I implemented a field prevention program intended at reducing alcohol’s attitude and expectancies among French high school students as well as an online replication (Chapter 4). In parallel, I conducted an extensive meta-analysis of women’s drinking behaviors and other risks across the menstrual cycle to understand the endocrine influences at play (Chapter 5). Finally, I analyzed the life-history theory of risky drinking at a population level through a hierarchical modeling of binge drinking frequency and intensity from 1997 to 2006 across the United States (Chapter 6). Taken together, those findings can help to build the foundations for an inter-disciplinary approach to binge drinking and create specific micro-targeted prevention programs

Discernment is a concept that marks the boundaries between law, psychology and philosophy. Therefore, the legal analysis of this notion must be understood within a psychological and philosophical framework. Discernment is a particularly complex notion. It is defined as the ability to distinguish between right and wrong. It may be confused with other notions with which it overlaps, such as criminal intent. It is therefore, indispensable to situate discernment in criminal legal theory. Thus, the following issues will be addressed in this thesis: Should discernment be linked to the legal understanding of what constitutes an offence, of to the theory of accountability? What are the consequences of the lack of discernment on the criminal liability of the offence perpetrator? Are these consequences similar in French law and in Syrian law? And lastly, when there is no criminal liability, what are the alternatives responses thesis shall look for alternatives responses provided for in both criminal law systems?

Two igneous suites containing layered ultramafic-mafic cumulates were investigated with the intent to characterize the parental magma and to identify processes significant to the petrogenesis of these rocks. In both study areas, the early Cretaceous Sierra Nevada batholith and the Ivrea Zone, isotopic systematics of the cumulates were found to preserve the characteristics of the mantle-derived parental magma and to record the effects of fractional crystallization and assimilation. Modeling the relative importance of these processes and characterization of the material derived from the mantle are necessary to understanding the growth of the continental crust.
Geologic mapping of 110 mi2 of the 125 to 110 Ma Stokes Mountain region reveals the presence of layered cumulate megaxenoliths and two coeval ring dike complexes. Petrographic analysis and geochemical modeling of 125 dominantly mafic and intermediate samples demonstrate the comagmatic nature of this suite. Combined oxygen, strontium and neodymium analysis of 22 samples indicates, however, that each ring complex was fed by an isotopically distinct parental magma (εNd(115) = +6.1, Sri = 0.70338, δ18O = 6.6‰ ; (εNd(115) = +5.7, Sri = 0.70372, δ18O = 6.7‰) both of which were derived from a variably contaminated, depleted mantle source. Minor assimilation of continentally-derived metasediments and mafic-ultramafic material of the Kings-Kaweah ophiolite further affected the isotopic evolution of the two subsuites. Hydrothermal alteration in the subvolcanic environment is recorded only by rare stoped xenoliths of 120 Ma hypabyssal intrusives.
Late Hercynian (≈300 - 270 Ma) magmatism produced the 10 km thick Mafic Complex lying at the base of the Ivrea-Strona-Ceneri crustal cross section. δ18O analysis of 237 whole rock samples and 26 mineral separates reveals that presumably early intrusions into the cool crust preserve the depleted mantle signature of the modeled parental magma (εNd(115) = +7, Sri = 0.703, δ18O = 6.5‰) while later intrusions assimilated significant amounts of the 10 - 12‰ metapelite. Subsequent intrusion of voluminous basaltic magma fonned a large, convecting magma chamber in which assimilation was concentrated within boundary layers. Such lower crustal production of high-18O (δ18O = 8 - 10‰) mafic magmas is suggested as contributing to the petrogenesis of upper crustal Permian granites.

This thesis examines the operating presence of intoxication as a concept in many of modernism’s founding discourses as well as in some of its practices. Intoxication is considered both as a way to understand artistic creation and as a chemically-induced state allowing artists to access a specific kind of creativity. The first part of the thesis shows how, in the 19th century, speculations about altered states of consciousness (alcohol, opium, hashish, etc.) intersected with poietic and aesthetic considerations. To demonstrate this, we link the development of an imaginary construct of intoxication that is filled with references to painting with writings on artistic creation that celebrate psychophysiological disorders. To support our hypothesis that the relationship linking art and intoxication is constitutive of the spirit of modernism we solicit the points of view of four writers who have adopted a physiological perspective on art: Stendhal, Balzac, Baudelaire and Nietzsche. Our aim is to elaborate notions of intoxication that are specific to each without losing sight of their respective sociohistorical contexts. By doing so, it becomes possible to delineate the emergence of the figure of the intoxicated artist and to analyze its ideological character. In the second part of the thesis, we observe the implications of this construct on artistic practices during the 20th century. We begin by attesting to the challenges and material difficulties which states of intoxication can pose to painters. We thereby identity reasons why artists from the early avant-gardes kept their distance from intoxication. We then turn to painters who, from the inter-war period on, instead sought states of intoxication and developed strategies to exploit them to creative ends: S.I. Witkiewicz, Josef Sima, André Masson, Jackson Pollock and Kazuo Shiraga. First, we observe how these processes tend to detach themselves from a rigorist pictorial formalism, granting instead a determining function to empathy in the creation as well as the reception of the artwork. We go on suggest two distinct types of pictorial expression of intoxication: one which still requires the expedient of figuration, the other which is grounded in a spontaneous involvement of the artist's body. The notions of trace and aura theorized by Walter Benjamin allow us to tie these two modes of practicing intoxication to ways of conceiving artistic creation during a period distinguished by Taylorism as well as by image reproduction technologies.
Lavoie, Vincent. "La foi en l’obscur : le sacré sale et le mysticisme du jeu chez Georges Bataille." Thesis, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/25078.
Повний текст джерелаIt was in the first half of contemporary 20th century when France was well secularized that Georges Bataille (1897 - 1962) constructed a scandalous - deeply Nietzschean - thought. The body is then conceptually not only at the center of Bataille's preoccupations, it now thinks of itself through its scandalous reality: eroticism, exhilarating and dirty. We are witnessing a sacralization of debauchery of all kinds and this is how Bataille's philosophical singularity operates. Indeed, a sacred thing does not exist in the sublime sky, in any deity or, in other words, in the heights, but in its exact opposite wich his the low, the excess, the eroticism and the dirty. This inversion in the order of the world is the desecration itself. This is why, with Mary Douglas, I was able to link two ideas that seemed contradictory to me: the dirty and the sacred. Knowing that Bataille is also a writer (Sade is a major influence), I can include a few stories to perfectly illustrate these two opposites. This is one of the most fundamental characteristics of the work I have mentioned: all of Bataille's works are paradoxical and antinomic. It is precisely from this same observation that I approach the question of mysticism in Bataille works. With the question of the sacred, the conception of mysticism involves an implicit critique of Christianity (opposition of sky and earth, for example). It is the instant and its hazard - the absence of purpose - that opens necessarily the way to experience as writing communicates its essence while making it more intelligible. From there precisely, Bataille developed the idea of chance in agreement with Nietzsche. Nietzsche becomes at the same time very present in the conception of the mysticism of Bataille. We can just think about the figure of the superhuman that we can associate with the sovereign man or even the will of power that we can compare to the will of chance. From then on, Bataille puts forward a mystic game, by placing himself in this radical game, from which the luck evoked by Bataille can emerge and which is nothing else than the possibility of experience itself. Finally, it is clear that the mental and physical fragility that are triggered in Bataille mystical experience also hide a form of self-sacrifice in the name of enjoyment but also in the name of the text.

Charles the Bald began a new liturgical tradition of prayers for rulers in medieval Latin Christianity, by ordering the addition of the commemoration of the title "king" to the Roman Canon of the Mass. After this point, the title ''king" was expected to be included in the prayers of the most sacred celebrations, alongside with the titles of the pope and of the local bishop. In doing so, Charles strived to elevate the position of the anointed ruler in the Church and to provide him with the most holy place of commemoration during the Mass. During the ninth and tenth centuries, the appearance of the prayer for rulers in the Roman Canon of the Mass was still exceptional, whereas by the thirteenth century itsabsence would be unusual.Based on the analysis of over four hundred liturgical manuscripts, my dissertation surveys the history of the aforementioned prayer and its importance for sacralization of kingship in early medieval Europe. It provides statistical research on the dissemination of these prayers throughout the Latin liturgy and it focuses on specific ecclesiastical centers and figures by analyzing causes for accepting or rejecting the innovation in the liturgical books of: Warmund of Ivrea, Bernward of Hildesheim, Sigebert of Minden, and monasteries in Regensburg, Fulda and Corvey.
