This study analyzes the links between Italian inner area municipalities’ expenditure and per capita incomes, considered as a proxy of well-being. Inner areas are territorial contexts characterized by a significant distance from the centers, the main supply poles of essential services. Following a top-down approach, the paper at first demonstrates the existence of a global convergence process in per capita incomes, with a faster rate of convergence in inner areas with respect to centers; then, attention is focused on local administrations’ policies and their impact on incomes in Italian inner areas. The paper gives a twofold contribution to the debate about the implementation of territorial cohesion policies: (a) on one side, public expenditure data are considered for the first time in an econometric model regarding Italian inner areas; (b) on the other side, the reference territorial subdivision is the lowest possible, giving the opportunity to investigate the changes in well-being at the finest scale.

The outstanding cultural heritage of Italy is intimately related to the landscape and its long-lasting history. Besides major cities, famous localities, and park areas, several minor places and areas hide important features that allow the enhancing of inner-mountain and hilly areas as well as local natural reserves. This enhancement is supported by combining different types of cultural tourism, such as the archeological and geological ones. In this paper, an integrated geological–archeological itinerary is presented, which aims to valorize both these aspects in the inner-mountain areas of the central Apennines. The itinerary, called the “Fan of the Terre Peligne”, is focused on the Terre Peligne area located in the Sulmona basin, in the central-eastern part of the Apennines chain (Abruzzo region, central Italy). It is composed of five sectors (one for each of the municipalities included) and incorporates traditional physical tools and digital ones. Here, the evidence of the Apennines formation is preserved from the origin of marine carbonate rocks to their deformation and the landscape shaping. The Terre Peligne intermontane basin became—and still is—one of the main transit areas for crossing the Italian peninsula since before Roman times and here many stages of Italian history are preserved. This allows outlining of the presence of man since prehistoric times, and here the name “Italia” was defined for the first time, in Corfinio, and to testify the connection between human and landscape history. A SWOT (strengths–weaknesses–opportunities–threats) analysis highlighted the main strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Combining geological and archeological elements, which are intimately connected in this area, this itinerary intends to be an instrument for the enhancement and awareness of the natural and cultural heritage of a poorly known area that features outstanding geological, landscape, and human elements of the history of the inner Apennines.

This qualitative research examined the representations of health and illness presented by 30 individuals who work as care workers, from three different locations: Eastern Europe, South America and Italy. We led three focus groups for people who came from the same geographical area (intra-ethnic) and two for those from ‘mixed’ areas (inter-ethnic). From our content analyses, certain similarities and differences between the conceptualizations of health and illness emerged: in the intra-ethnic focus groups, Eastern Europeans focused on ‘inner strengths’, South Americans on ‘love’ and Italians on ‘personal autonomy’. These peculiar traits were levelled in the inter-ethnic focus groups.

The paper provides new evidence on the relationship among per capita incomes, local expenditures and territorial economic structure in Italian inner areas. The study area comprises the municipalities belonging to three Italian regions, namely, Marche, Abruzzo and Molise. The methodology employed involves a panel multilevel regression model, in order to investigate both on territorial and time changes. The period under analysis covers 2008–2016, the years following the outbreak of the global crisis. The results highlight the importance of three public expenditure categories—Environment protection and planning, Tourism, and Cultural heritage—on the growth of per capita incomes. Regional economic structure also plays an important role, especially through the rate of employees in the industrial sector. In order to increase the effectiveness of local public policies, a re-allocation of global expenditures among its various components might be recommended. Another suggestion concerns the implementation of integrated policies oriented both to tourism and to the enhancement of territorial assets.

Abstract The paper elaborates on the relationship between land cover changes and transformation drivers, by analysing the dynamics that took place between 1990 and 2010 in Mt. Matese area (Italy). Mt. Matese is an interesting case study which was included as a pilot area in the Italian Strategy for Inner Areas. Drivers related to land cover changes include population characteristics, the agricultural and production system, tourist offer, location and settlements dynamics. Land cover changes and the dynamics of studied drivers are analysed in-depth, through a descriptive and multivariate analysis. Results highlight the difficult situation of the study area for many drivers. However, the slow changes in land cover and the potentialities offered by the natural environment, as well as by the agriculture and tourism sectors, outline some development prospects. The paper outlines the current scenario in the area and provides useful references for future policies aimed at setting up this area as National Park and at implementing the Strategy for Inner Areas.

Inner areas are rural areas with low population density, distant from the main hotspots offering essential welfare services and endowed with significant environmental assets and cultural heritage. In Italy, their development is at the core of the national strategy for inner areas. Specific documents and program agreements were issued for each inner area and summarized the intervention themes and projects to implement. However, when the inner areas are considered within a regional territorial ‘matrix’, further collective policy actions have to be identified, through comparison and in-depth analysis of their features and influence on development. Therefore, this research aims to identify and analyse the development needs and potentialities of the inner areas, for strengthening the national strategy and improving their recovery and resilience through collective policy actions. The Multiple Criteria Decision Aiding (MCDA) method PROMETHEE II was applied as research methodology to four inner areas in Puglia region (southern Italy), using 43 indicators organized into seven thematic dimensions and setting specific parameters. The results enabled to delineate the overall development score of the four inner areas, and the profile of each inner area based on every indicator and dimension. By analysing this profile, key thematic dimensions where to direct collective policy actions were identified, related mainly to contrast with the depopulation by improving specific essential services (e.g., digitalization, health, education) and to foster the development of agriculture, tourism, and cultural heritage. This research can be considered a first step for future broader studies, to guide the process of policy making for the recovery and resilience of European and Italian inner areas with a multi-perspective approach.

The article investigates the possibilities of re-activating the built heritage of the Marche Apennine through shared, creative, and transcalar approaches. This is a particularly challenging task for marginal inner areas, which during the pandemic have been even more isolated due to previous structural issues such as lack of services, poor accessibility, economic stagnation, and depopulation. Italian inner areas are also facing an increase in environmental risks linked to ongoing climate change. This work focuses on the Appennino Basso Pesarese Anconetano in the Marche Region as part of the national project “Branding4Resilience”. The research methodological approach entails an exploration of the territory through quantitative and qualitative tools to investigate the possibility of a new reading of the Marche inner area and suggest operation at a local level, without losing the wider perspective on global challenges. This interpretation is synthesized in a territorial portrait that supports visions for the sustainable transformation of the area, and shows the need for shared collaborative approaches for more inclusive forms of living together. Finally, the work proposes built heritage as a trigger for development processes in marginalized territories, thus highlighting the crucial role of design and creativity, through transcalar approaches, to unveil relevant and often hidden resources and to envisage resilient futures for inner areas.

The Italian debate on the so-called ‘inner areas’ has received a much-needed boost, following the COVID-19 pandemic, which has further highlighted the differences between metropolitan and inner areas. While the progressive depopulation of inner areas is a worrying phenomenon, the limits of incessant urbanisation and the concentration of settlement and infrastructure policies in large conurbations have become evident. Departing from the framework of the B4R-Branding4Resilience research project of national interest and, by continuing in the furrow initiated by the SNAI, but also surpassing it, the aim of the University of Palermo’s research is to define the requirement for a more inclusive settlement model in the Sicani area in Sicily (Italy) to re-balance existing asymmetries by recharging peripheral areas with new centrality. The aims of the research are to demonstrate that inner areas could be an engine for innovation, thereby outlining a roadmap through which to encourage the resilience of new sustainable lifestyles. These aims would be achieved by working on new perspectives and projects, which are capable of radically modifying production, consumption, and tourism dynamics and work/life models, and which are gleaned from a study regarding the Sicani area in Sicily. The paper discusses case study quantitative and qualitative analyses and first results.

This article analyzes inner and marginal territories in four Italian peripheral contexts by first discussing some of the results and future steps of the “B4R Branding4Resilience” research project, funded by the Italian Ministry of Research from 2020 to 2023. The overall research is based on three phases: (1) the exploration phase to analyze socio-economic data and territorial dynamics; (2) the co-design phase involving local actors to develop ideas for a selected pilot case; (3) the co-visioning phase where a future transformative perspective for the whole area was shared with the institutions. The article focuses on phase 1 and presents some first results achieved by the application of a methodological approach based on the integration of different qualitative and quantitative tools and methods. The results outline the exploration of the four selected territories through data analyses and mapping, perceptive-narrative explorations, field research, and explorative designs. The concept of peripherality is addressed in a critical way, trying to go beyond standardized definitions, including interdisciplinarity as an essential tool for territorial enhancement and branding. The main interpretation findings not only outline possible strategies and actions for the four analyzed inner territories, but also foster the application of the proposed methodological approach in other complex socio-economic contexts.

Through the use of various published and original sources this study outlines the reception and settlement of Italian immigrants in a modern Canadian urban environment. Substantial Italian migration and immigration to Toronto began in the late nineteenth century. The first migrants and immigrants were dispersed across at least four relatively distinct, inner-city neighbourhoods. Over time, and in particular after World War Two, one of these neighbourhoods grew to become one of the largest settlements of its type outside of Italy. Now in the process of gentrification, the area known as College Street Little Italy served a pivotal role in the accommodation of Italian immigrants in Toronto.

Over the last decades, the world has experienced rapid socioeconomic transformations affecting peripheral areas, which are increasingly feeling a sense of being left behind. Therefore, the term ‘peripheral’ has started to gain much attention in the academic and policy debate. This PhD thesis investigates a particular case of peripheries in the Italian context – known as ‘Inner Areas’ –, through different lenses, distinctively analysed in three chapters. Each chapter represents a paper as a stand-alone piece of research in the field of Regional Science, investigating separate research questions. Inner areas are analysed with respect to: i) tourism development strategies – since tourism is recognised by governments as a leading sector for revitalising regional and local economies; ii) digital divide impact on tourism supply and iii) digital divide influencing house prices, given that ultra-broadband is increasingly becoming a crucial factor for the development of the Information Society and essential for the economic growth.

The Italian government has devised a strategy for those municipalities further away from poles of services (trains, hospitals, and schools), defined as inner areas, for the European programming period 2014-2020. The main trend of characterising these areas has been depopulation being higher than the national average due to migration (to poles), lower birth rate, and aging population. This phenomenon brought a serious lack of public services and losses in the labor market. The abandonment of the young workforce was accompanied by the abandonment of the land with degradation of the landscape and greater hydrogeological risks. This thesis concentrates on those areas, in the insular regions of Italy, which are defined by the strategy as peripheral and ultra-peripheral, namely those which were more heavily affected. The approach used to study the involved municipalities will be building the economic, socio-demographic, and environmental indicators to assess their sustainability. The analysis, to highlight the underlying relationship between indicators, will be conducted through the application of Rough Set theory. The advantage of choosing this data mining method is that it does not require any statistical assumption on data distribution or any structure collecting data, which ensures the description of pattern present in the data. After assessing how condition attributes (the indicators above mention) connect to the decision attribute (sustainability), a set of rules will be generated, which will help the decision-makers to determine the right policy to apply to act against the given trend.

Italy is characterized by a congenital duplicity, visible in the gaps and substantial territorial differences. On the one hand, Italy’s metropolitan areas and coasts follow the rhythms of development and growth of the most advanced countries, on the other, the Inner Areas suffer from an insoluble demographic contraction and a progressive socio-economic decline. The latter, tangent areas, exist as a slow overlapping of traces of those who have made the earth and the mountains an economy: castles, villages, agricultural landscape, sheep tracks, hydraulic works, terraces are manifestations of a timely and capillary work, a small plot for the protection of the territory. In an anthropological context that no longer belongs to us, irremediably detached from any feeling of affinity, a link of co-evolution, with nature, we look at these territories as a world of the vanquished, fragile landscape, broken and not functional, lands of old, marginalized, excluded, hermits, farmers and dreamers. On the contrary, they can be fertile territories for social, political, cultural and design innovation. However, the relaunch of the Inner Areas through the revitalization of the smaller villages and historic centers faces considerable difficulties in the elaboration of policies able to put in system the expectations of development of the territory and the landscape-heritage protection. Socio-economic reactivation is closely dependent on attracting investment and retaining and attracting residents, providing adequate levels of quality of life. New forms of regeneration can trigger development processes, starting from the data values of the territory and reconnecting the precious link with the rural dimension. The research reassembles a reading of this Italian duplicity, the foundation of a varied and diversified cultural character, returning a cognitive picture of a territory that for the most part is Disadvantaged, Inner and Mountain. On the basis of analysis and reflections, we look at a potential Laboratory Italy Inhabited: the internal territories as an object of planning and design of new economies, new models of life, management and protection of territory, environment and landscape. The depopulation of the territory and the abandonment of the heritage are one of the most important phenomena at national level, to which this work wants to respond through the proposal of a territorial strategy for the Inner Area of Fortore in Molise and an agenda of interventions for the historic center of Toro.

The present essay includes the main results of the research project on community-based cooperatives, promoted in 2018 by Fondosviluppo and FEDAM, and implemented by researchers of University of Molise. The volume highlights the potential and the modes of operating of community-based cooperatives, which carry out a mix of productive and socially useful activities for local community well-being. The research, through a new methodological and operational path, reaches the following results: a) devise a strategy to detect the degree of social, economic and environmental vulnerability levels of Italian inner areas; b) outline the needs of local communities; c) define the role of community-based cooperatives in bridging regional gaps, also identifying their possible policy support.

Kiev has always revealed a surprising capacity for assimilation, giving rise over time to multi-ethnic, multi-faith and multi-cultural contexts of various types. Thinking of the "Kiev text" leads inevitably to consideration of the other emblematic text of the Ukrainian identity, the no less composite reality of Lviv. This publication contains the contributions presented at a Conference (Milan, February 2007) addressed to the "cultural text" of Kiev and Lviv. The authors are specialists with different cultural profiles, and the book is of a deliberately inter-disciplinary character. In view of the richness and variety of the information it is offered, within the Italian and international context, as a useful source even for the non-specialist public, and is one of a very small number of books dedicated to Ukraine available in Italian. Clearly, the arguments addressed represent only a tiny part of the vast spectrum of issues and questions inherent to the specificity and plurality of Kiev and Lviv. The hope is that the seed sewn here will grow into further fruitful interest.

The present contribution is divided into three sections. The first deals with the features of Italian inner areas and their criticalities; it infers that Community-based cooperatives may well represent a regeneration tool for marginal areas. The second highlights Community-based cooperatives historic development dynamic, starting from the end of 19th century to modern times. The last section discusses the legal aspects of these cooperatives, both in internal relationships among members, and in the relations with external institutions.

The tools of digitisation and enabling technologies for an inclusive use of cultural and environmental resources, programmed and incentivized within the PST – “Piano Strategico di Sviluppo del Turismo 2017-2022” (PST) of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism - represent an extraordinary opportunity to promote and extend responsible, cultured tourism attentive to the development of the main centres, also of the smaller towns and the Inner Areas, acting as drivers both from an economic point of view - as future development resources for the repopulation of areas subject to abandonment and marginalization - and as opportunities to promote the rediscovery and the start of a new cultural trend able to promote knowledge and enhancement of the multiple resources of the territory, going beyond the current range of users and incidence (see PST 2017-2022). The paper analyses these aspects, combining them with the themes of integrated enhancement of the cultural heritage of the Inner Areas and with the sustainable tourism policies of the 2030 Agenda. In particular, it analyses the ways in which the use of new technologies and digital tools applied to cultural heritage can significantly contribute to the enhancement and cultural promotion of Inner Areas and territorial contexts penalised by the absence of effective infrastructures and net-works.Through the principles of sustainability, innovation, accessibility and the physical and cultural permeability of places, which are the basis of the 2017-2022 TSP, new ways are outlined for the valorisation and tourist enjoyment of the cultural heritage of sites and territorial itineraries that are usually little explored and practised but which are crucial and strategic in terms of increasing social, cultural and economic value; of overcoming differences and promoting new competitive scenarios centred on the complexity and variety of the heritage visited (cultural permeability) and on the themes of the unique-ness and richness of stratified territorial and environmental heritages.

Over the last three decades, various initiatives promoted by the European Union concerning the involvement and empowerment of communities in recognising and creating cultural values have flourished. They include, for instance, the Faro Convention, programs for ecomuseums and community mapping, and have contributed to giving voice to bottom-up initiatives for enhancing not only so-called monumental architecture but also "ordinary" architecture and built and vernacular cultural heritage. In general, this approach has also contributed to focusing attention on the importance of local communities in local development processes. In Italy, the so-called inner areas are often characterised by ordinary and vernacular heritage related to rural or manufacturing activities. In these small villages, some local communities, also thanks to the Italian National Strategy for Inner Areas, recognised reuse of part of the vernacular local built heritage as a strength for the community itself and the broader context. Some cases have demonstrated that valorisation of architectural heritage is possible without creating tourism-related facilities only (hotels, museums, etc.) but also creating services needed by "local" users that facilitate the everyday life of the place. In this perspective, attention should also be focused on heritage education and the intergenerational transmission of knowledge, which should involve the entire community at different levels, starting from experiences already in place in similar contexts. In this sense, a community can be intended as a broad concept, a constantly evolving process that includes the resident citizens and a broader network related to a specific territory. Through analyses of case studies, this contribution aims to propose reflections on the role of heritage community experiences in empowering vernacular architectural heritage and its wider context.

The good mechanical performance of bamboo, coupled with its sustainability, has boosted the idea to use it as a structural material. In some areas of the world it is regularly used in constructions but there are still countries in which there is a lack of knowledge of the mechanical properties of the locally-grown bamboo, which limits the spread of this material. Bamboo is optimized to resist to flexural actions with its peculiar micro structure along the thickness in which the amount of fibers intensifies towards the outer layer and the inner part is composed mostly of parenchyma. The flexural strength depends on the amount of fibers, whereas the flexural ductility is correlated to the parenchyma content. This study focuses on the flexural strength and ductility of six different species of untreated bamboo grown in Italy. A four-point bending test was carried out on bamboo strips in two different loading configurations relating to its microstructure. Deformation data are acquired from two strain gauges in the upper and lower part of the bamboo beam. Difference in shape and size of Italian bamboo species compared to the ones traditionally used results in added complexity when performing the tests. Such difficulties and the found solutions are also described in this work. The main goal is to reveal the flexural behavior of Italian bamboo as a functionally graded material and to expand the knowledge of European bamboo species toward its use as a structural material not only as culm but also as laminated material.

After the publication of the research of Howland and Howland1 several authors used eccentric photorefraction to measure refractive errors and accommodation (e.g. Kaakinen2, Norcia et al.3, Bobier and Braddick4, Schaeffel et al.5, Angi and Cocchiglia6) or the development of myopia (Schaeffel and Howland7). But a set-up which can be used by untrained persons and allows automatic examinations of large numbers of subjects is not available in the market. In Europe several scientific working groups and the Italian company Fortune Optical found together to develop an automatic refractometer based on eccentric photorefraction which can be used for screening. In such a set-up it is not sufficient to reduce the image processing on measurements of the crescents’ width, because their inner borders are only unsharply defined, but rather is it necessary to take the total light distribution in the pupil into account.

The Val di Chiana is characterised by a dense rural building heritage, which differs according to its mountain, hill and plain areas. Among the houses on the plains, there is an elegant model called 'Leopoldina’, which can be considered an exemplary case of vernacular architecture: indeed, such a farmhouse, built on the occasion of the land reclamation initiated during the Grand Duchy of Pietro Leopoldo of Lorraine (1765-1790), presents local materials and building techniques and, moreover, it was designed to meet the precise economic, agricultural and lifestyle needs of the peasant families of sharecroppers. Although the Leopoldine refer to a repetitive typological model, there are many singularities that can be found in the Val di Chiana area, both from the formal and constructive point of view. For this reason, it is indispensable to have a thorough knowledge of them, based on cataloguing. The Landscape Project entitled "Leopoldine in Val di Chiana" (Tuscany Region, 2021) proposes cataloguing the Leopoldine, while in the past, certain municipalities in the Val di Chiana had already carried out a survey of these abodes. However, from a critical analysis of the various files, certain critical points have since emerged. Thus, the present contribution introduces a new tab model of Leopoldine, taken from a PhD Research Project, based on both the richness of information and on an inter-dimensional reading between architecture and landscape: the purpose is to allow an exhaustive knowledge of the factories within the Lorraine area aimed at restoration and re-use projects compatible with the value of the houses, as well as with the development needs of the territory involved. For this reason, the tab has become a valid tool, even to be adopted in agricultural territories, through which it is possible to address, the challenge proposed by the Convention on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society (Faro, 2005) of heritage conservation in a sustainable way, as an opportunity for the recognition and strengthening of social cohesion.

Knowledge and material analysis for conservation actions related to the Maida castle in Calabria (Italy)The Maida castle is located in a hill site in historical center of the Maida City, facing two sea gulfs: Squillace gulf on the east side and Sant’Eufemia gulf on the west side. The position is strategic moreover because the castle is located in the center of Calabria between the Tyrrhenian and the Ionian Seas. Hidden in an inner area, the castle was erected on a rock which has a wide perspective view, giving the ability to control a stretch of territory between the two coasts and allowing to make an easier defense. Although today the fortress appears mainly as a ruin, it is still possible to distinguish one of the quadrangular towers as used as district prison, some inaccessible underground spaces and part of the walls. The state of degradation is evident, caused by the time action and, unfortunately, by inadequate maintenance activity. Most of the external surfaces have evident signs of deterioration, caused by bad weather conditions, but above all by weed vegetation. To better understand the role of the factors as biological aggression, a study has been carried out focusing on most common and widespread biological degradation present on the external surfaces of the castle. Samples of biological materials were taken and examined in the laboratory in order to acquire useful information about the state of the monument. This knowledge is necessary because it provides a first picture of the main causes of degradation of the castle and useful information for developing more aware and respectful restorations of its identity.

Abstract A key approach to large renewable energy sources (RES) power management is based on implementing storage technologies, including batteries, power-to-hydrogen (P2H), pumped-hydro, and compressed air energy storage. Power-to-hydrogen presents specific advantages in terms of suitability for large-scale and long-term energy storage as well as capability to decarbonize a wide range of end-use sectors, e.g., including both power generation and mobility. This work applies a multi-nodal model for the hourly simulation of the energy system at a nation scale, integrating the power, transport, and natural gas sectors. Three main infrastructures are considered: (i) the power grid, characterized by instantaneous supply-demand balance and featuring a variety of storage options; (ii) the natural gas network, which can host a variable hydrogen content, supplying NG-H2 blends to the final consumers; (iii) the hydrogen production, storage, and re-electrification facilities. The aim of the work is to assess the role that can be played by gas turbine-based combined cycles in the future high-RES electric grid. Combined cycles (GTCCs) would exploit hydrogen generated by P2H implementation at large scale, transported through the natural gas infrastructure at increasingly admixed fractions, thus closing the power-to-power (P2P) conversion of excess renewables and becoming a strategic asset for future grid balancing applications. A long-term scenario of the Italian energy system is analyzed, involving a massive increase of intermittent RES power generation capacity and a significant introduction of low-emission vehicles based on electric drivetrains (pure-battery or fuel-cell). The analysis highlights the role of hydrogen as clean energy vector, not only for specific use in new applications like fuel cell vehicles and stationary fuel cells, but also for substitution of fossil fuels in conventional combustion devices. The study also explores the option of repowering the combined cycles at current sites and evaluates the effect of inter-zonal limits on power and hydrogen exchange. Moreover, results include the evaluation of the required hydrogen storage size, distributed at regional scale or in correspondence of the power plant sites. Results show that when extra hydrogen generated by P2H is fed to GTCCs, up to 17–24% H2 use is achieved, reaching up to 70–100% in southern regions, with a parallel reduction in fossil NG input and CO2 emissions of the GTCC plants.
