An important group of spindle whorls found at Tha Kae in Thailand carries traces suggesting the use of iron spindles, and includes an unusual type of whorl shaped like a door knob. The author explores the implied contacts reaching into south China, but is also able to add a probable link with India in the early first millennium AD, well in advance of the better known Dvaravati period (sixth–thirteenth centuries AD).

The excavation of a 1st century BC cremation cemetery having ring-ditch surrounded interments is reported. One of its two richly accompanied burials included an unparalleled drapery-cast stud/knob – an extraordinary object found within a cemetery with uniquely delineated graves. Given its location on the northern fringe of the distribution of Aylesford-Swarling cremation burials, the site prompts questions of core/periphery interrelationships, regionally and group definition.

Zirconium is an element of considerable petrogenetic significance but is rarely found in hematite at concentrations higher than a few parts-per-million (ppm). Coarse-grained hematite ore from the metamorphosed Peculiar Knob iron deposit, South Australia, contains anomalous concentrations of Zr and has been investigated using microanalytical techniques that can bridge the micron- to nanoscales to understand the distribution of Zr in the ore. Hematite displays textures attributable to annealing under conditions of high-grade metamorphism, deformation twins (r~85˚ to hematite elongation), relict magnetite and fields of sub-micron-wide inclusions of baddeleyite as conjugate needles with orientation at ~110˚/70˚. Skeletal and granoblastic zircon, containing only a few ppm U, are both present interstitial to hematite. Using laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) spot analysis and mapping, the concentration of Zr in hematite is determined to be ~260 ppm on average (up to 680 ppm). The Zr content is, however, directly attributable to nm-scale inclusions of baddeleyite pervasively distributed throughout the hematite rather than Zr in solid solution. Distinction between nm-scale inclusions and lattice-bound trace element substitutions cannot be made from LA-ICP-MS data alone and requires nanoscale characterization. Scandium-rich (up to 0.18 wt. % Sc2O3) cores in zircon are documented by microprobe analysis and mapping. Using high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging (HAADF-STEM) and energy-dispersive spectrometry STEM mapping of foils prepared in-situ by focused ion beam methods, we identify [011]baddeleyite epitaxially intergrown with [22.1]hematite. Lattice vectors at 84–86˚ underpinning the epitaxial intergrowth orientation correspond to directions of r-twins but not to the orientation of the needles, which display a ~15˚ misfit. This is attributable to directions of trellis exsolutions in a precursor titanomagnetite. U–Pb dating of zircon gives a 206Pb/238U weighted mean age of 1741 ± 49 Ma (sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe U–Pb method). Based on the findings presented here, detrital titanomagnetite from erosion of mafic rocks is considered the most likely source for Zr, Ti, Cr and Sc. Whether such detrital horizons accumulated in a basin with chemical precipitation of Fe-minerals (banded iron formation) is debatable, but such Fe-rich sediments clearly included detrital horizons. Martitization during the diagenesis-supergene enrichment cycle was followed by high-grade metamorphism during the ~1.73–1.69 Ga Kimban Orogeny during which martite recrystallized as granoblastic hematite. Later interaction with hydrothermal fluids associated with ~1.6 Ga Hiltaba-granitoids led to W, Sn and Sb enrichment in the hematite. By reconstructing the evolution of the massive orebody at Peculiar Knob, we show how application of complimentary advanced microanalytical techniques, in-situ and on the same material but at different scales, provides critical constraints on ore-forming processes.

This article focuses on handled stamp seals, their typological classification, archaeological contexts and geographic distribution. By analyzing a total of 679 seals (302 from good archaeological contexts) over a time period from the Early Bronze Age to the Iron Age, it was possible to point out that specific shapes can be considered typical for the Anatolian region, while others were adopted from Anatolia in the Levant or belong to specific site productions. The data have shown that of the three predominant types (Stalk, Domed and Modelled Domed Knob Seals), probably only one passed from Anatolia to the Northern Levant with a consequent proliferation of variants. All other types of handled stamp seals didn’t provide sufficient data in archaeological contexts to better define the dynamics of production or geographical displacement: therefore, it was only possible to present the general data and propose some hypotheses.

Additional crystallographic data are given for the recently reported mineral middlebackite, which has been described for discoveries at Iron Knob in South Australia and Passo di San Lugano near Trento, Italy. The material examined in the present study was from a third finding of the mineral, viz. from a quartz outcrop at Mooloo Downs Station in Western Australia within which it was co-located with the chemically- and structurally-related mineral moolooite, CuIIC2O4·nH2O, reported by Clarke and Williams (1986). In this study, the crystal structure was elucidated independently of the other studies using a combination of the a priori charge flipping and simulated annealing methods with synchrotron radiation diffraction (SRD) powder data. The principal crystal data for the Mooloo Downs material are: space group P21/c with lattice parameters a = 7.2659(18) Å, b = 5.7460(11) Å, c = 5.6806(11) Å, β = 104.588(3)°; Vc = 229.46(18) Å3; empirical formula CuII2C2O4(OH)2 with 2 formula units per unit cell; and calculated density = 3.605 g cm−3. The lattice parameters agree approximately with values given for the other studies, but not within the reported error estimates. The atom coordinates, interatomic distances, and angles for the Mooloo Downs material are compared with those from the other studies using single crystal data, with the values from all three studies agreeing approximately, but again not within the reported uncertainties. The crystal chemistry found for middlebackite received strong confirmation through the synthesis for the first time of di-copper oxalate di-hydroxide. Laboratory X-ray diffraction powder data for the synthetic form of the mineral from this study agree closely with the SRD data for the natural mineral.

Five skarn -rock samples were heated with KNO3 and with a solution of 5% KOH in KNO3 for 2 h at 450°C. The decomposed samples were cooled, dissolved in water and filtered. Iron was extracted from each residue as well as from the original samples by hot conc. HCl , and determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. These results were compared with the known (X-ray fluorescence) total iron content of the original samples. The amount of iron extracted with HCl from the skarn samples was 3-11% lower, while that extracted after heating with KNO3 alone was 2-4% lower, than the amount present according to the X-ray fluorescence results. However, the amount of iron extracted from the samples treated with a solution of KOH in KNO3 was comparable to that determined by X-ray fluorescence.

Our understanding of the pathophysiology of the anaemia of chronic kidney disease (CKD) has improved considerably in the last decade with the discovery of the iron regulatory peptide hepcidin. Reduced clearance of hepcidin and the presence of a chronic inflammatory state contribute to elevated hepcidin levels in kidney disease. The recent discovery of the various factors and signalling pathways regulating hepcidin has opened up an exciting avenue for research into the development of newer agents that could treat anaemia of CKD. This review highlights our current understanding of iron metabolism in health, the regulators of hepcidin, issues associated with the current available therapies for the treatment of anaemia in CKD and potential novel therapies that could be available in the near future targeting the various factors that regulate hepcidin.

Abstract- A research on the utilization of ulin wood waste (Eusideroxylon Zwageri T) has been conducted as an active charcoal to adsorb Iron (Fe) and Manganese (Mn). The purpose of this research is to know and study the potential of activated charcoal from Ulin wood waste as adsorbent of Iron (Fe) and Manganese (Mn) in well water, knowing optimum time to adsorb Iron (Fe) and Manganese (Mn) and to know the concentration of Iron (Fe) and Manganese (Mn) after adsorbed by activated charcoal from Ulin wood waste. Charcoal is obtained from Ulin wood with burning for 9 hours, then activated chemically and physics. The parameters studied were pH, optimum time determination, Iron (Fe) and Manganese (Mn) concentration after adsorption. The results showed that the optimum time (toptimum) to adsorb Iron (Fe) and Manganese (Mn) was at minute 30 and obtained the optimum concentration of Iron (Fe) of 0,22 mg / L and Manganese (Mn) concentration of 0,174 mg / L . The aim of this study was to examine inexpensive techniques to control iron chlorosis. It was found that soil applications with Fe-EDDHA, FeSO4, K2SO4, KNO3, citric acid, Agrobiosol and FeSO4 + cow manure significantly increased the leaf iron concentration 90 days after application. Increased iron concentrations were found only in the leaves of trees supplied with K2SO4 and FeSO4 + 11–15–15, 150 days after application. Foliar applications with Micro-A-Fe, FeSO4, Micro-A-Fe + FeSO4, Mix Fyt + FeSO4, Biomin, Lysodin, FeSO4 + citric acid, FeSO4 + NH2CONH2 + citric acid, FeSO4 + KNO3 + citric acid increased significantly the leaf iron concentration 150 days after application. This study also investigated the effect of pH (in nutrient solution), rootstocks and Verticillium dahliae on iron chlorosis. The response of peach rootstocks was dependent on the pH — the highest iron concentration was found at pH 4 and the lowest at pH 7. Data were also obtained on the susceptibility of the important for the peach industry rootsocks to iron chlorosis. The rootstock St. Julien 655/2 had the highest iron concentration, while no significant differences were found between the rootstocks GF677, MRS 2/5, Seedling and Antafuel the lowest. Verticillium dahliae had no affect on the chlorophyll concentration of peach trees.

The purpose of this research is to know the mineral content of iron sand and its spreading both vertically and horizontally with the purpose of providing information and data for local government of Agam district for the development and arrangement of environment along the coast. In order to obtain information about the depth of iron sand can be used geoelectric method because one of the physical properties of metal elements including iron is to have low resistivity. In this study used resistivity mapping method that aims to determine the variation of the arrangement of soil layers vertically and horizontally. The configuration used in this method is Schlumberger configuration. To know the chemical content of iron sand is done by taking samples of iron sand systematically and represented at some point. The sample was analyzed chemical composition by XRF method (X-Ray Fluorescence), then correlated with some surface data, so that the depiction of the quality of iron sand of Tiku Regency. From the interpretation of soil resistivity value on 2 paths it can be concluded that iron sand in Tiku Beach area is in depth 0 - 20 m. Chemical content of iron sand from XRF method analysis shows Fe2O3 percentage of 10 - 35%, with TiO2 content of 1 - 3%. The quality of iron sand can be used as raw material for cement maker.

Analyzed the melting process of iron base which contacted tightly with boron slag, established the boriding melting dynamical model of iron base and calculated the melting rate of pure iron. The melting rate of pure iron is not only decided by heat transfer rate, but also related to the mass transfer rate of boron. With the resolving of the model, we can know that the melting rate of pure iron is 3.41mm/min, and melting time is 15 min. When the speed of heating is high, the melting rate is mainly decided by diffusion.

The effects of dual-fuel on improving the ballistic efficiency of a low energy sugar-based solid rocket propellant were investigated in this paper. This was achieved by establishing a threshold proportion of sucrose to sorbitol that provided the highest ballistic efficiency, using a beam load cell (model single-point 2,000 kg linearly defined by 0-20 kN force, with ±.005 percent precision). Seven different propellant formulations were prepared, loaded into the rocket motor and tested for performance. The major performance parameters of interest were the thrust, total impulse, burn time, delivered specific impulse, delivered characteristic velocity, and the chamber pressure. The formulations tested were potassium nitrate–sucrose propellant (65% KNO3 and 35% sucrose (C12H22O11)) (KNSU); potassium nitrate-sorbitol propellant (65% KNO3 and 35% sorbitol (C6H14O6)) (KNSB); modified potassium nitrate-sucrose propellant (65% KNO3, 32% sucrose (C12H22O11)), and 3% carbon (C) (MODKNSU); potassium nitrate-sucrose-sorbitol propellant (65% KNO3, 25% sucrose (C12H22O11)), and 10% sorbitol (C6H14O6) (KNERK); potassium nitrate-sucrose-sorbitol-carbon propellant (65% KNO3, 24% sucrose (C12H22O11), 10% sorbitol (C6H14O6), and 1% carbon (C)) (MODKNERK); and finally a propellant made from KNO3, sucrose (C12H22O11), sorbitol (C6H14O6), carbon (C) and iron II oxide(Fe2O3) combinations in 65, 30, 3, 1, 1% proportion respectively. The novel result obtained from these experiments was applied to boost the performance of a KNSB rocket propellant motor during a rocket launch experiment. Both static and dynamic rocket motor internal ballistic parameters were then compared. The measured delivered motor average thrust and the effective propellant burn times were recorded as: (164.15N, 3.97s); (102.95N, 6.53s); (65.66N, 9.38s); (79.09N, 3.77s); (243.98N, 3.77s) and (92.6N, 5.89s) respectively. The MODKNERK, was established to produce a most efficient motor and with the full delivery of its ballistic energy. It was also established, that the ballistic and rocket motor efficiency of a lower energy rocket motor can be improved by starting the ignition of such motor with fast burning dual-fuel rocket propellant (MODKNERK).

The formulations tested were potassium nitrate–sucrose propellant (65% KNO3 and 35% sucrose (C12H22O11)) (KNSU); potassium nitrate-sorbitol propellant (65% KNO3 and 35% sorbitol (C6H14O6)) (KNSB); modified potassium nitrate-sucrose propellant (65% KNO3, 32% sucrose (C12H22O11)), and 3% carbon (C) (MODKNSU); potassium nitrate-sucrose-sorbitol propellant (65% KNO3, 25% sucrose (C12H22O11)), and 10% sorbitol (C6H14O6) (KNERK); potassium nitrate-sucrose-sorbitol-carbon propellant (65% KNO3, 24% sucrose (C12H22O11), 10% sorbitol (C6H14O6), and 1% carbon (C)) (MODKNERK); and finally a propellant made from KNO3, sucrose (C12H22O11), sorbitol (C6H14O6), carbon (C) and iron II oxide(Fe2O3) combinations in 65, 30, 3, 1, 1% proportion respectively. The novel result obtained from these experiments was applied to boost the performance of a KNSB rocket propellant motor during a rocket launch experiment. Both static and dynamic rocket motor internal ballistic parameters were then compared. The measured delivered motor average thrust and the effective propellant burn times were recorded as: (164.15N, 3.97s); (102.95N, 6.53s); (65.66N, 9.38s); (79.09N, 3.77s); (243.98N, 3.77s) and (92.6N, 5.89s) respectively. The MODKNERK, was established to produce a most efficient motor and with the full delivery of its ballistic energy. It was also established, that the ballistic and rocket motor efficiency of a lower energy rocket motor can be improved by starting the ignition of such motor with fast burning dual-fuel rocket propellant (MODKNERK).

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different sources of iron, hormones and Agrobacterium tumefaciens in the chlorophyll and iron concentration of the peach cultivars Katerina and Fire Blight. The results showed that the concentration of Fe in the leaves was significantly increased after spraying with FeSO<sub>4</sub>.7H<sub>2</sub>O (alone or in combination with KNO<sub>3</sub>, urea, citric acid or ascorbic acid) or with GA<sub>3</sub> + Kinetin. Soil applications with Fe-EDDHA also significantly increased the iron concentration in leaves. Chlorophyll (a/b) increased only in trees sprayed with citric acid or H<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub> 60 days after application. SPAD chlorophyll measurements showed that Fe-EDDHA and FeSO<sub>4</sub>.7H<sub>2</sub>O + organic matter, applied as soil drench, significantly increased the chlorophyll concentration in leaves of Katerina even up to 120 days after application. Foliar treatments had no significant effect on the SPAD index. SPAD measurements also showed that the concentrations of chlorophyll in leaves of the rootstocks St. Julien 655/2 and wild seedling rootstocks were significantly lower than in GF677 and Antafuel. The rootstocks inoculated with the A. tumefaciens strain Ag-28 alone showed a significantly lower chlorophyll concentration than the uninoculated ones.

The objective was to know the level of iron deficiency anemia and its relationship that it exerts on the low academic performance of the students at the Professional School of Medical Technology of the Andean University Néstor Cáceres Velásquez de Puno-Peru (2019). The research was quantitative and descriptive, correlational, cross-sectional. The sample consisted of 53 students (women), who were from the I, II, III and IV semesters. To obtain data, the hemoglobin value of the students was determined, and a validated survey was applied to them to know their academic performance. The results showed that there are low percentages of students with iron deficiency anemia. The relationship, according to Spearman Rho, indicates that there is a moderate association between iron deficiency anemia and academic performance.

Background: Province of Yogyakarta Special Territory is a province of “elderly” structure population, as viewed from the number of elderly which is 15% of total population. Anemia is one of nutrition problems of elderly which reaches as high as 50%. This is caused by low intake of iron and other substances related to iron metabolism process in forming hemoglobin. Low hemoglobin concentration can be one of causes of elderly declining physical fitness. Efforts to overcome anemic problems can be done through the supply of iron and zinc for the elderly twice a week.Objective: To know effect of iron and zinc supply to hemoglobin concentration and physical fitness for anemic elderly at Bantul District, Province of Yogyakarta Special Territory.Methods: The study was a randomized double blind controlled trial design. Subject of the study were anemic elderly that fulfilled inclusion criteria. The supply of iron, combination of iron and zinc to trial group was given twice a week on different days, supply of iron was given on Monday and Thursday, while supply of zinc was given on Tuesday and Saturday. Laboratory and physical fitness examination to both group were done prior and after treatment. Nutrition intake data were achieved through food record. Next, to know effect of iron, iron and zinc supply to elderly hemoglobin concentration and physical fitness, covariant analysis was done.Results: The result of the study showed that after 3 months’ treatment, there was significant difference of hemoglobin concentration caused by different treatment of group with iron supply, iron and zinc combination supply and control group (p=0.012) although iron and combined iron and zinc supply had equal effectiveness in increasing hemoglobin concentration (p=0.404). There was no significant relationship between elderly hemoglobin concentration and physical fitness (p=0.448). This showed that treatment given affected increase of hemoglobin concentration but the supply and increase of hemoglobin concentration did not affect increase of elderly physical fitness.Conclusion: The supply of iron and combined iron and zinc increase hemoglobin concentration, but the supply and in- crease of hemoglobin concentration did not increase the elderly physical fitness.

Blood donation is a process of taking blood from someone, either voluntarily or as a replacement donor blood banked for later usein blood transfusions. Regular donors are donors who regularly donate blood between 3-4 times a year. Nonregular donors are those who do not routinely donate blood in a year. Each donor donating one bag of blood, suffered a loss of approximately 200 mg of iron. The purpose of this study was to know the differences in the levels of iron profiles in regular and nonregular donors. The study was conducted cross sectional on 65 samples of blood from the UPTD Transfusi Darah South Sulawesi Provincial Health Office, consisting of 34 regular donors and 31 nonregular donors. Serum iron and TIBC levels were examined using ABX Pentra 400 with colorimetric and immunoturbidimetry method. Ferritin level was examined using Elecsys with ECLIA principle. The data were then analyzed by unpaired T test. In this study, the regular donors showed an average serum iron level of 87.09 μg/dL, TIBC level 255.41 μg/dL and ferritin level 121.27 μg/dL. The nonregular donors, showed an average serum iron level of 83.26 μg/dL, TIBC level was 261.80 μg/dL and ferritin level was 158.62 μg/dL. The results showed no significant differences between the levels of iron profiles in regular and nonregular donors. Based on this study, it can be concluded that regular and nonregular blood donation did not affect the levels of iron profiles. It is recommended to conduct a further cohort research to know the levels of iron profiles in blood donors by comparing before and after donating blood.

Iron overdose remains a significant public health threat to young children. Unit dose packaging of potent iron supplements is expected to reduce the frequency of severe pediatric iron overdose incidents. Interna - tional regulations require child-resistant iron packages. We aim to know if iron is dispensed in child-resistant containers (CRCs) and to emphasize the importance of using them. A prospective cross-sectional observational study assessing the proper dispensing of ferrous sulfate tablets in CRCs from major city pharmacies. Forty government and private pharmacies were visited. Ferrous sulfates with a total of 600 to 6500 mg elemental iron per package were found. The package of 6000 mg was the most commonly found. Most of the packages with high concentrations are dispensed from the government hospitals and primary healthcare centers pharmacies. None of the pharmacies dispensed iron in CRCs. To conclude, pharmacies dispensed iron in non-CRCs. Public health efforts on increasing awareness and improving packaging are highly needed. Authority regulations to use child-resistant iron packaging are required.

Modeling of Iron metal diffusion in liquid lead using molecular dynamics simulation has been done. Molecular dynamics simulations are used to predict the value of physical quantities that we want to know based on the designed material model and on the input simulation data. In this research, effect of different geometry of material models was observed to know the diffusion coefficient. The material system was iron (Fe) in liquid lead (Pb). The material models is designed using Packmol software to get the initial configuration of atom's arrangement by inputting the material's characteristics such as mass, density, volume, number of atoms. This work examines the diffusion coefficient of iron in molten lead metal with the geometric shape of the simulation system in the form of iron in molten metal for various simulation models of boxes in a box, balls in a box and balls in balls. To design simulated geometric shapes we use the Packmol program. To calculate the diffusion coefficient we use the molecular dynamics simulation method. To find out which geometry is suitable, we compare the diffusion coefficient of the simulation results with existing references. The diffusion coefficient value of the spherical iron (Fe) system in the spherical liquid lead (Pb) has the best value compared to the other two forms with an accuracy rate of 99.94% because it is influenced by the even distribution of atoms in each part.

To analyze the interconnection between erythropoiesis and iron metabolism, one of the issues raised in this study was to know iron bioavailability under physiopathological conditions. Our aim was to understand the functional axis response composed of erythropoietin (Epo)—hepcidin—ferroportin (FPN), when 2 dysfunctional states coexist, using an animal model of iron overload followed by hypoxia. FPN and prohepcidin were assessed by immunohistochemistry using rabbit anti-mouse FPN polyclonal and prohepcidin monoclonal antibodies. Goat-labeled polymer − horseradish peroxidase anti-rabbit EnVision + System (DAB) was used as the secondary antibody. Epo levels were measured by ELISA. Tissue iron was studied by Prussian blue iron staining. Erythropoietic response was assessed using conventional hematological tests. Iron overload increased prohepcidin that remained high in hypoxia, coexisting with high levels of Epo in hypoxia, with or without iron overload. In hypoxia, FPN was clearly evident in reticuloendothelial macrophages, more than in hypoxia with iron overload. Interestingly, duodenal FPN was clearly identified on the basolateral membrane in hypoxia, with or without iron overload. Our data indicate that 2 signals could induce the cell-specific response as follows: (i) iron signal, induced prohepcidin, which reduced reticuloendothelial FPN and reduced iron availability; and (ii) hypoxia signal, stimulated Epo, which affected iron absorption by stabilizing duodenal FPN and allowed iron supply to erythropoiesis independently of store size.

Abstract Brown rot (BR) fungi are highly destructive wood decaying organisms that utilise free radicals in the initial stages of decay. Although many wood extractives have been shown to have antioxidant (AO) activity, their ability to protect wood from radical-based degradation has received little attention. The present paper reports on the ability of Scots pine heartwood (hW) and knotwood (knW) extractives to inhibit radical-based degradation, with a focus on the Fenton reaction. AO assays showed that extract solutions and pure pinosylvins had good radical scavenging activity and weak to moderate ferrous iron binding and ferric iron reducing activities. AO assays were repeated with wood powders and showed that extractives were also active in wood: hW and knW had significantly higher activities than their extracted counterparts or sapwood. However, when wood powders were subjected to degradation by Fenton reagent, only knW showed reduced mass loss. Based on the activity profiles of knW and hW, it appears that the radical scavenging activity of pine extractives is more important than their interaction with iron. The results suggest that the AO activity of extractives may play a role in inhibiting BR, but its importance relative to the other biological activities of extractives is unknown.

To know about the nature of gangue associated with the ores, characterization has become an integral part in mineral processing and beneficiation, therefore, the as-mined iron ore collected from Karak region of KP has been characterized for its phase, microstructure and chemical composition via XRD, SEM and EDS respectively. Beneficiation of the iron ore has been carried out by shaking table and magnetic separator. XRD analysis confirmed the presence of iron oxide (Fe203) as the major phase along with quartz (Si02) as the minor phase. Finely grinded iron ore powder of 100 (149 µm) and 200 (74 µm) mesh sizes were passed via shaking table and magnetic separator subsequently. The iron ore was successfully upgraded from 28.27 wt.% to 36.51 wt.% at 100 mesh and 38.70 wt.% at 200 mesh via shaking table, thus achieving a maximum of 10% upgraded iron ore. The magnetic separator did not become so effective due to non- magnetic nature of hematite.

In optimizing design of the iron core, it is essential to know the magnetic field of the coil outside the core to get the leakage inductance, because the leakage inductance in this area usually provides high contribution to the flux density in the iron core. In this paper, an analytical solution as an alternative to three-dimensional FEM (finite element method) to calculate the field outside the iron core by solving analytical equation using MathCAD is presented. The analytical method provides results that are close to result given by three-dimensional FEM, but with the great advantage of dramatically reduced computing time.

Iron-deficiency anemia is a common reason for referral to a gastroenterologist. In adult men and postmenopausal women, gastrointestinal tract pathology is often the cause of iron-deficiency anemia, so patients are frequently referred for endoscopic evaluation. Endoscopy may be costly and at times difficult for the patient. Therefore, physicians need to know what lesions can be identified reliably and, more importantly, the importance of ruling out life-threatening conditions such as occult malignancy. Over the past decade, a number of prospective studies have been completed that examined the yield of endoscopy in the investigation of iron-deficiency anemia. The present article provides a broad overview of iron-deficiency anemia, with particular emphasis on hematological diagnosis, etiology, the use of endoscopy in identifying lesions and iron-repletion therapy. Other clinical scenarios, including assessment of patients on anti-inflammatory or anticoagulation therapy and patients with bleeding of obscure origin, are also addressed. The present article provides a diagnostic algorithm to iron-deficiency anemia, which describes a more systematic manner in which to approach iron-deficiency anemia.

Iron homeostasis is one of the most critical functions in living systems. Too little iron can lead to anemia and tissue-specific disorders, such as splenomegaly. Excessive systemic iron is characteristic of hemochromatosis and is implicated in the brain in Parkinson's disease. With the exception of some single gene diseases like hemochromatosis, we know little about genetic-based, individual differences in iron-related parameters and their impact on biology. To model genetic control of iron homeostasis, we measured liver, spleen, and plasma iron concentrations, hematocrit and hemoglobin, transferrin saturation, and total iron-binding capacity in several BXD/Ty recombinant inbred mouse strains derived from C57BL/6 and DBA/2 progenitors. At 120 days of age, the animals were killed for iron analysis. All measures showed genetic-based variability consistent with polygenic influence. Analysis of principal components of the seven measures revealed three factors that we named availability, transport, and storage. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis revealed one suggestive QTL on chromosome 5 for availability, two suggestive QTL (one on chromosome 1 and the other on chromosome 7) for transport, and one weak QTL on chromosome 2 for storage. The results show that iron homeostasis is a complex trait and is influenced by multiple genes.

Objective: To know the more practical parameter that can determine iron deficiency in chronic disease anemia Discussion: Ferritin serum indicates iron store in the body, whereas transferin receptor indicates functional of iron uptake in the erythrocyte. Changes of ferritin level due to inflammation process are varies. Recent evidence shows different changes of transferin receptor between iron deficiency anemia and those in chronic disease anemia. In chronic disease anemia, receptor transferin level increase but not as high as in those who suffer from pure iron deficiency anemia. Studies on groups of iron deficiency anemia, iron deficiency with acute inflammation, chronic disease anemia and healthy control population showed significance differences of receptor transferin among them. sTrF-R index is an index derived from the calculation of transferin receptor level divided by logarithmic of the ferritin level. The usage of sTfR-F index indicates more significance difference as compared to transferin receptor. Its sensitivity and specificity increase when it is applied to diagnose iron deficiency in elderly group. Conclusions: sTfR-F index is more sensitive and specific for the determination of iron deficiency in chronic disease anemia

The bioavailability (relative bioavailability value; RBV) of iron compounds relative to ferrous sulfate has proven useful in ranking the potential of iron compounds for food fortification. The efficacy of iron-fortified foods however depends on the absolute iron absorption from the fortified food and not on the RBV of the iron compound. Compounds of lower RBV can be used to design efficacious fortified foods by adding them at an appropriately higher level. Efficacy thus depends on the amount of iron added to the food vehicle as well as the daily consumption of the fortified food by the target population, the amount of iron lacking in the diet of the target population in relation to their needs, and the prevalence of widespread infections and other micronutrient deficiencies. The World Health Organization has recently published guidelines for food fortification, which include recommendations for iron fortification compounds and a method of how to define the iron fortification level. The same organization has also published guidelines on the iron status methods to be used to monitor interventions. Recent efficacy studies, which have to a large extent followed these guidelines, have shown good efficacy of iron-fortified salt, fish sauce, wheat flour, and rice in improving the iron status of target populations. However, although we now know how to design an efficacious iron-fortified food, efficacy cannot be ensured in populations with widespread infections and other micronutrient deficiencies. In such situations, other public health measures may be necessary before we can ensure an improvement in iron status.

Abstract The prevalence of reactive thrombocytosis in iron deficiency anemia (IDA) as well as it’s duration and need of further work up is not always known by primary care physicians (PCP). The data we know came mainly from papers published back in the 1960’s involving small sample sizes, most of which consisted of pediatric patients. The most widely cited publication is based on Schloesser’s 1965 review of 46 iron deficient anemic adult patients (Hb <11, Serum iron <70ug per 100ml), of which 60.8% exhibited thrombocytosis. Thrombocytopenia (28.3%) among IDA patients was described by Gross in his 1964 publication. Most of the studies failed to address the mechanism linking thrombocytosis and IDA, Endogenous erythropoietin (EPO) levels are high in IDA and were not available in 1960 therefore we decided to examine any statistically significant relationship between platelets counts and EPO levels. The relationship between platelets, hemoglobin (Hb) and ferritin were also evaluated. A comprehensive chart review of 450 patients with a diagnosis of anemia between 2002 and 2006 was performed. These patients were screened for iron deficiency anemia using the following criteria: Hb ≤ 12 for women and Hb ≤ 14 for men, ferritin ≤ 20. Anemias other than IDA were excluded by identifying patients with concomitant infectious disease, malignancy, pregnancy or with high CRP levels indicative of inflammatory process. Sample size 140 patients. Pre and Post treatment lab data consisting of Hb, Plt, endogenous EPO, Ferritin and Reticulocyte were collected. Results see (table 1). 31% of our patients (43 / 140) experienced thrombocytosis. We found a statistically significant correlation between Hb levels and plt counts. R = −0,299 .p < 0.05. however a cause effect relationship was not established. We were not able to find a significant relationship between platelets counts and EPO levels or Ferritin levels. In 65.6 % of our patients thrombocytosis resolved in 28 days or less. (See table 2) The prevalence of thrombocytosis in our series 31% differs from the previous published data. Extreme thrombocytosis was not frequent in our series, none of our patients presented with thrombocytopenia. To our knowledge this is the largest sample size surveyed for such study. A mechanism to explain thrombocytosis in IDA remains unclear but according to our data is not related to either the iron cellular concentration (ferritin) or endogenous erythropoietin level. We recommend that patients with IDA related thrombocytosis should be followed with a CBC 4 weeks after treatment was started. No other work up for thrombocytosis seems to be necessary in the presence of diagnosed IDA. Persistent or increasing thrombocytosis should be followed closely and underlying bone marrow disorder such as myelodysplastic disorders considered as a differential after 4 weeks of complied treatment. Children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at high risk of anemia, an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease and poor quality of life. The present study used baseline data from the Korean cohort study for Outcome in patients With Pediatric Chronic Kidney Disease (KNOW-PedCKD). A Total of 437 patients was included in the analyses excluding missing data. The characteristics of patients with and without anemia and those of patients with and without iron deficiency were compared. Logistic regression analysis and Pearson correlation were conducted to evaluate associated risk factors and correlations in children with CKD. Anemia in children with CKD was associated with older age, low body weight and body mass index (BMI) z-score, birth age, preceding glomerulonephritis, decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), low levels of serum albumin and calcium, high levels of serum intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH), and serum phosphorus. Anemia was correlated positively with changes in the BMI z-score, body weight, and serum albumin and cholesterol levels, but correlated negatively with serum calcium, iPTH, ferritin levels, and transferrin saturation. Iron deficiency in children with CKD was associated with young age, low hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels, high BMI z-scores, and low levels of serum iPTH. This is the first nationwide cohort study of anemia in Korean children with CKD and the first prospective pediatric CKD cohort study in Asia. The study results demonstrated that anemia and iron deficiency are affected by various factors, including age, BMI, and levels of serum iPTH. To improve the retrospective outcome of affected children, it is important to understand the effect of each of these factors and to attempt an early intervention to prevent anemia and iron deficiency by regular measurement of these parameters in children at risk.

The research aims to know the content of iron metal (Fe) in samples of canned packaging beef. The destruction of the samples prior to breaking the metallic bond with organic compounds in the sample, making them easier to identify the metal content to be analyzed. The analysis of metal content of iron has been done by using Atomic Absorption Specthrophotometer. The level of iron metal contained in beef samples of A brand packaging is 40.0570 mg/kg, in B brand packaging is 25.5175 mg / Kg and in the C brand packaging 22.9600 mg/Kg. When compared to the iron metal threshold in food as contained in SNI 01-7387-2009, then the sample of beef packaging for B and C brand is still safe because the iron content is still below 30 mg/kg. Meanwhile, the beef corned for A brand is not safe because it is higher than 30 mg/kg.

Anemia in pregnancy can increase the risk of low birth weight babies, miscarriage, birth prematurely, the risk of bleeding before and/or during delivery which can cause death to mother and baby. This study aims to know the correlation between consumption of food sources of iron and intake of iron tablets on anemia cases in pregnant women at Bulili Public Health Center. This type of research is analytic with a cross-sectional approach. The sample in this study was 39 pregnant women. The data were obtained from interviews and checking hemoglobin levels. Data analysis used univariate and bivariate analysis with the Chi-Square test. The results showed that consumption food sources of iron at Bulili Public Health Center in the rare category (51,3%), intake of iron tablets in the low category (51,3%), and the incidence of anemia in pregnant women (48,7%). While the correlation between consumption food sources of iron (ρ-value= 0,037) and intake of iron tablets (ρ-value= 0,001) on anemia cases in pregnant women at Bulili Public Health Center. The conclusion of this study is that there is a relationship between the consumption of food sources of iron and the intake of iron tablets on anemia cases in pregnant women at Bulili Public Health Center.

In planning the treatment of splenomegaly in primary or secondary osteomyelofibrosis it is necessary to know whether there is any significant hematopoiesis outside the spleen. In contrast to the measurement of iron kinetics with 59Fe, which is not suitable for imaging, immunoscintigraphy with the monoclonal antibody Bw 250/183 allows specific imaging of the hematopoietic bone marrow. The diagnostic use of this method in addition to iron kinetics is illustrated and discussed in a patient with primary osteomyelofibrosis.
